Though tempting, Falcons shouldn’t bite on Pacman
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
While contemplating the present and the future of their suddenly reborn NFL franchise, Falcons fans should slap high-fives with Arthur Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith and…
Michael Vick?
Yep. And …
Bobby Petrino?
Definitely.
Courtesy of Vick and Petrino, the Falcons may never threaten to become the prototype for a soap opera again.
Good. The prospect of acquiring overwhelming talent often has punted away common sense for folks in the NFL. As a result, if Falcons’ decision-makers didn’t have those disasters involving Vick and Petrino surrounding the 2007 season, they might be tempted to add the disaster of the past four years that has been Adam “Pacman” Jones.
He’s an Atlanta native. He’s available after getting dumped by the Dallas Cowboys. He’s also a nice cornerback — at least when he’s not sitting out a suspension or getting interrogated by the cops. Not only that, the Falcons’ secondary was shaky last season, with Chris Houston struggling at one cornerback and an uneven combination of Domonique Foxworth, Brent Grimes and Glenn Sharpe at the other.
If you plug in Pacman, who also can return kicks, you’ve got the poor man’s version of Neon Deion.
You’ve also got the antithesis of the environment that Blank, Dimitroff and Smith are trying to build for the Falcons these days as owner, general manager and head coach. They want a productive team without the hint of a drama.
Such was the case last season when the Falcons went from 4-12 the year before to the playoffs at 11-5.
With the gifted Pacman, the Cowboys didn’t make the playoffs, by the way.

On an unrelated note, TM thought the Falcons should have taken Dorsey over Ryan.

Great straw-man fallacy writing, Moore. Of course the Falcons shouldn’t pursue Pacman. Why didn’t you just write a column explaining why the Falcons shouldn’t sign known serial killers to the roster because they’d be a threat to the team?

The Falcons would NOT do this. Why even try to get something stirred up Terrance? It would be different if they contacted his agent, but there is NOTHING to this story. You are just trying to ruffle feathers. Find something newsworthy than this crap. And you get PAID for this??

Simply no reason for this article. Pacman still lives in Dallas and is attempting to get back with them. There is no talk of him in Atlanta other than your wasted words.
Please do us all a favor and write about something useful.

T.M. Exactly right. Rule #1 in player personnel should be: NO head cases on the roster. Fans prefer players who display character over those who act like characters.
PDAs (personal display of asininity)on the field are not the sign of a TEAM. And as for OFF the field, well, after Vick they should all be choirboys.

Who would ever be tempted by Adam Jones??? Not trying to be rude but come on man…this is a ridculous article. Might as well discuss the the idea of bringing in Ryan Seacrest as TE. No one is considering Adam Jones in the ATL organization… NO ONE.

Yes, let Pacman spend more time in atlanta. Cause we all know he can control himself here…
Bringing Pacman to Atlanta, is like sitting an obese person in front of a platter of cheeseburgers and telling them not to touch them. Not a good idea.
I’m sure Club Blaze would love the extra publicity. If they dont have enough already, being known as the “home of the 5 dollar lap dance” and all, hahaha

This is serious editorial journalism? I think not. Does anyone in their right mind, with even a slight understanding of the Falcons and the kind of players they have committed to building a team with, think that ANYONE in the Falcon’s organization would think for a second about signing Pacman Jones? This is more than a reach. As ‘journalism’, it’s a farce. But maybe that’s not the point. Perhaps TM’s objective here is to write enough of a column to justify a ridiculous headline, and then reap the reward in the form of a lot of blog comments, so that he can point to them and say “see, my writing is relevant—look how many hits/comments it garnered.” If that was the point, then count me as one, because you got me. But if the point of the AJC is to provide relevant, topical content that advances the conversation and its readers’ understanding of the Falcons’ world or sports world in general, then it falls woefully short. Am I whining? Maybe. But the thing is, I actually like the AJC. And, whether it deserves it or not, it’s got a regular place in my day, because as a fan who lives out west, I know I can go to it to find something new about my hometown teams everyday. But when that something is wildly speculative and completely unrealistic garbage like this, I think I’d rather it have been nothing. [sigh] If you want a lot of blog hits, and honest journalism counts for nothing, why not write up daily columns of similar quality (or lack thereof)? It wouldn’t be hard. Why not write this article tomorrow “If let go by the Cowboys, would T.O. be the spark the Falcons need?” or “Falcons could be tempted to bring back DeAngelo Hall” or “Falcons should think thrice before bringing Vick back as a ‘wildcat formation’ QB.” See, it’s easy. Think of a controversial, attention-grabbing name, throw it in an unrealistic scenario, and let ‘er rip. Though TM does acknowledge reality in saying that the current management team wouldn’t go near Pacman, what collective interest is served by even addressing the issue? Are there groups of Falcons fans all over the city clamoring for Pacman? If so, who are these people? Editorial staff: Where is the respect for the intelligence of the AJC readership? We’re not that dumb. But, then again, if the worth of an editorial is measured by the number of reader responses it elicits, then maybe we are. Or at least I am.
(ps- I look forward to reading your column about “Terrel Owens in a Falcons uni?” in a couple of days.)

Bigger than the fact that Jones is an idiot and stays in trouble. Teams should pass on him because he is not that talented and to be honest can not play. The guy is a more famous version of De’angelo Hall (who I actually found entertaining for at least a little while). But when it comes down to it, he does not have the skills to match the hype. The guy stinks like six day old cheese on grandama feet.

On behalf of the Atlanta Falcons organization, I want to say thanks to Terrance Moore.
I was tempted. In fact, I was all set to bail out a half dozen violent criminals so that I would have some street cred when I approached Pacman.
The plan was to hit Magic City, make it rain, and then retire to a VIP room with some of the talent and work on the finer points of a blitz penetration package in the red zone.
I was even going to kick his bodyguard’s @ss, just so that he’d know if he was down with the Falcons, we were down with him.
And then I read Terrance Moore’s article and a light bulb went off. Thanks Terrance; I don’t know how we would have gone 11-5 without you.
Thanks again,
Thomas
PS Bill says thanks again for the scoop on Brady. Never in a million years would he had considered him without your valuable input.

You all don’t get it. Terrance is willing to take the hit for this lame story, because it covers up the real story; a story that would be too emotionally devastating, given all the Falcons and the city have gone through.
The real story, is that Arthur Blank tried to use his connections with the Bush administration to get a pardon for Rae Carruth to put him in the slot receiver position.
Terrance knew that breaking that story would do irreparable to the Falcons, the city, and the Bush administration. So for the greater good, he sacrificed his credibility, all of it, to write this story instead.
I hope one day Obama will recognize him with a Presidential Medal of Freedom for all he’s done for the NFL, this city, and this country.

I normally support TM’s columns, but this one was a waste of space. This is a non issue. The Falcons wouldn’t even seriously consider Jones as a player. The corner-back position isn’t even a high priority if they resign Foxworth. Upgrading the Linebackers, safeties, and finding another pass rusher are what will improve the defense the most.

I’ve never seen a more useless editorial in my life. What makes Terence think that the Falcons, based on everything they’ve done recently and their new philosophy, would even remotely consider bringing in Pacman Jones. It was the furthest thing from my my mind as I’m sure the same goes for Dimitroff and Co. Why is this even being discussed?
Terence Moore needs to get a clue about the Falcons.

Terence; the Falcons are finally a “we” team and Pacman is a “me” player. He would ruin the chemestry that we finally achieved on this team. After Vick and Petrino, I hope the Falcons have learned to stay away from hot dogs and go with the meat and potatoes players that teams like Pittsburgh have won with for years. Character matters in team sports.

The Vikings claimed Cris Carter off waivers for $100 back in 1990 — a no-risk decision.
Jones is a distraction, a divider, a risk. Mr. Moore, if you really believed the Falcons could be tempted to look into signing Jones, why wouldn’t you phone Mr. Dimitroff or Mr. Blank and get their thoughts on the idea and include it with your column?

As beautiful as it was yesterday seeing a black man become president of this coutry,it is a travesty to continue giving this disgrace to the NFL,African-Americans, and football enthusiest around the USA, a chance without serious reprocutions. This young man[thats being polite]has become an embarrassment to all black men in pro sports. Please Terrance don’t even give this a moment of thought, because it borbers on “trash journalism”, and even though I don’t always agree with you, you do bring insight, and controversy to the paper. Please lets forget the PACMANS of sports, and lets not throw MIKE VICK under the bus. He’s made one bad decision, and may be remorseful, but PACMAN, well in the words of DENNIS GREEN,he is who we thought he is, and that is a THUG! Let him join Washington, because everybody knows two pieces of toast is better than one, and D.HALL can have a mutual thug to be with.

Terence Moore of the AJC reports that the Atlanta Falcons have passed on signing free agent Sammy Baugh as a backup to Matt Ryan. Moore quotes Falcon sources as saying “While we love his character, we had some concerns about his mobility in the pocket.”

The number one reason NFL teams should stay away from Pacman Jones is very simple:
He’s just not that good.
In no way is he the game changer that Vick was. In no way can he win games by himself. He is, quite simply, an average player at best.
And comparing his off field issues to Vick falls short in one key way:
Vick never hurt another person. Pacman did.
Case closed.
I agree with the above posters. This column was pretty pointless.

I think Terrence Mooore is a f__king idiot. Pacman did absolutely nothing for the Dallas Cowboys during the games he was playing. Perhaps its the defensive schemes or he was still rusty, but he did nothing for Dallas. Maybe it will take him 2 years to look as great as he did in Tenn., but Atlanta should not waste their time on this guy.

I am a die hard Falcons fan and I absolutely hated all the drama that we got from Vick-Petrino and that sorry good for nothing loud mouthed Me-Angelo Hall. But truth be told when I saw that Dallas released Pacman in the back of my mind my thought was, How would Pacman do under the tough hard nosed style of Coach Smith. My conclusion was that its too much risk but hey,I still thought it and I think a lot of people who follow this team thought the same thing. So you people that are telling Terrance to get a clue,go get a clue yourself!!!! I think he is very clued in! Good article, keep up the good work TM. GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the purpose of this article was, apparently, to discuss why the Falcons should not add a player that no one has said the Falcons would be remotely interested in signing?
On a related note, the Falcons also should not go after Jeff George, because he’s old and washed up. No one ever said they were contemplating it, but they just shouldn’t go there.

What a stupid idea. Might as well try and re-sign Vick and use him in the Wildcat position in the offense. Imagine Jones and Vick on the same team. Might not be much offense, but definately would be offensive.
