Give the Jackets a break
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I know. I know. Every team in sports can use excuses for why it is bad instead of good or good instead of great.
So forget excuses.
Well, usually.
Take Georgia Tech’s football team, for example. Give them a break. We’re not talking about a gigantic one, but a significant one.
No question, the Yellow Jackets continued their dance with inconsistency on Saturday with a meltdown at North Carolina. It stripped Tech of a legitimate shot at reaching the ACC championship game, but you know what? The Jackets still are 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
That’s not bad when you consider the Jackets were picked as also-rans in preseason polls. Not only that, they are an overwhelming exception to that perfectly wonderful no-excuse rule for at least 16 reasons. That’s how many freshmen or sophomores were among Tech’s 22 starters against North Carolina.
No ACC team starts as many underclassmen as the Jackets, and it is likely that few teams in the nation at the Division I-A level have such a distinction.
Tech also has Paul Johnson as its first-year head coach. He implemented a new offense (triple option), a new defense (less Jon Tenuta-style blitzing) and a new philosophy (fiery on the sidelines instead of the calm of Chan Gailey, his predecessor).
Even so, with games left against conference-foe Miami and those folks between the hedges, the Jackets already have as many victories now as they did after five of the last six seasons.
Yeah, they deserve a break.

Terence;
Thanks for a great article.
Sometimes people seem to forget that GA Tech has also gone through a total transformation from a pro-style offense to the triple option, and have had to use players in the new system that may not be the “perfect fit”. It’s remarkable that the offense is working as well as it is considering Paul Johnson has put these “round pegs” into the “square holes”.
People also seem to forget that GA Tech is working with a limited number of scholarship players due to a “misunderstanding” in the GT Athletic Association during the O’Leary days and Tech getting hit with its first-ever NCAA sanctions. This also means several walk-on players are on the field on Saturdays…
While Chan Gailey and Paul Johnson are both fine men, one thing the GA Tech fans have come to see this year is that Coach Johnson plays to win where it appeared that Coach Gailey played not to lose.
That energy, and faith in his players, is contagious, and should bode well for this program for years to come.

Any Tech fan who isn’t thrilled with the results thus far is either 1) crazy or 2) not a Tech fan.
I could not be more thrilled with what Paul Johnson has done with the Jackets.

Good point, but it sure would be nice to win the next three (regardless of which bowl they end up in).

Couldn’t agree with you more. These guys are young, and they are playing their hearts out every weekend. I look for big things to come, hopefully on 11-20-08 against the “U”, I’ll be there, in white, to support this program. To all those coming to the Miami game, or thinking about it…For once Terrance is right, lets get out there and support the guys. They are playing good football right now, and who would have thought they would be in the position they are in. I bought into CPJ’s system while he was at Georgia Southern, Navy, and now on the Flats. The man is a winner, and he WILL win at Tech!!

If I had to choose between an ACC title or beat UGA……Beating UGA would be sweeter……..

If we could recruit a punter and kicker we should be very good next year. This year has gone better than anticipated so why all the negative comments.

Good article. I agree Tech has made major strides under Coach Johnson. Looks like they will be a force in the ACC!

We’re all disappointed that Tech didn’t play better and win against UNC. But to suggest that the UNC loss is comparable to any of the past few years inexplicable losses (Wake, Duke, etc.) just wouldn’t be accurate.
In addition to the well-documented point that Tech is the youngest team in the ACC, it is easy to forget why this team is so young. Tech has significantly lower numbers of players on scholarship (I think the number is 10) due to transfers and scholarship reductions from academic mis-reporting a few years back.
As injuries have taken their toll during the season, Coach Johnson simply doesn’t have many players to put into the mix, and is especially lacking in upperclassmen.
The Carolina game is over and can’t be helped. I fully expect the Jackets to play much better next Thursday night against Miami.

Great article Terrance. Since we’ve been winning, a lot of people have forgot everything this team had to overcome to get to THIS point. If you want to kno whow good Tech is, look at similar situations around the country. Every other school who has put in a totally different offense are terrible righ now. Michigan wont be going bowling for the first time in 33 years. While Aurburn totally abondoned their offense in the middle of the season. We are ahead of schedule by atleast 2 years. Add that with the fact that most of the team are underclassmen and inuries, then you’ll understand we are doing great!

Look at other schools that have implemented totally new offenses:
MICHIGAN- (not going bowling for the first time in 33 years)
AURBURN- (abandoned their offense in the middle of th season)
We are having a great season! Theres no need for excuses. We have already exceeded expectations. And if the o-line get better in the next three weeks, we WILL end up shocking “somebody”

I am a UGA grad and have been a dawg fan for about 40 years. However, I am glad to see Tech heading in the right direction. I was one of the few that thought Johnson was a good hire from the beginning and I believe he will bring back the pride to that program. Here’s hoping you guys go 10 or 11 and one every year.

You can expect Paul Johnson’s offense and Dave Wommack’s defense to get better and better, or as Frank Broyles would say “bettah and bettah”. How do I know? I am Dave Wommack’s Father-in-law.

Sure Tech deserves a break but, I don’t think CPJ or anybody there is looking for one. O-Line injuries have been killer but we need to improve our depth all round in the future.

Nicely said Terence. Before the season, I would have never thought Tech would even be close to 7 wins. I am proud of this team and look for great things to come!

I think another thing we’ve all learned besides the fact that Coach Paul Johnson is a far superior college coach than Chan Gailey is that John Tenuta’s defense wasn’t as great as we thought. Johnson + Wommack= Bright Future on the Flats. THWG!

Last year at this time GT was 6-4; now they are 7-3 - not much difference, except now the fans LIKE the coach!

Heck, yes, 9-3 is still a step big step in the right direction. Actually, I think it will be 8-4, but for a year of regime change with tons of young players, I’m happy to have it. Or, 7-5, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.

givemeabreak-if you think the record is the only thing that differentiates this team from last year’s team, you haven’t been watching.
