Don’t bark about rankings, just win Dawgie

While Georgia sort of blew out a Division I-AA team (Georgia Southern) in the first weekend of college football, USC really blew out a Division I team (Virginia). So, yeah, the Trojans deserved to leap over the Bulldogs in the Associated Press and coaches polls. So, yeah, USC is the best team in the country right now.

End of controversy.

That said, it doesn’t matter if the Bulldogs are ranked No. 1, No. 2 or whatever by the polls involved with the Bowl Championship Series. If they keep winning, they’ll have nothing to worry about.

That’s a big if, of course.

(Note: There are a lot of “ifs” coming in this blog, because Georgia can’t capture the national championship without a lot of “ifs.”).

You know the deal by now, with those monster away games at South Carolina, Arizona State, LSU and Auburn. The Bulldogs also have those back-to-back home games against SEC tough guys Alabama and Tennessee. Plus, they have that little game in Jacksonville.

If the Bulldogs go undefeated during the regular season with that schedule, and then if they whip an LSU or an Auburn or an Alabama in the SEC championship game, and then if they conquer a Southern Cal or an Oklahoma in the BCS championship game, they’ll be No. 1.

If the Bulldogs lose once during the regular season with that schedule, they still might make the SEC championship game, and with a victory that night, they still might make the BCS championship game with a chance to win it all.

Two losses or more during the regular season? Forget it.

So, if you’re a Georgia fan, it’s just win, Dawgie.

I would hardly call Tennessee a “tough guy” after losing to an average team with a third-string quarterback. It looked like Eric Berry was the only one that came to play (Can you imagine UGA’s secondary if he decided differently??)

It’s the “ifs” that make college football as great as it is.

You managed to write a column while adding absolutely no insight other than your typical baiting of Georgia fans with “Dawgie”. If I was as bad at my job as you apparently are, I’d have been fired years ago.

Georgia has a brutal schedule, if we win, we’re in, blah, blah, blah… What about that hasn’t already been discussed to death by every legitimate sports writer and talk show host?

You blew it ajc. Those layoffs would’ve been perfect for dropping this piece of flotsam.

UGA fans aren’t smart enough to see that Terence’s job is to get you wound up so you will spend MOORE time on the ajc.com site or reading the paper. Smart marketing.

Then again, he may genuinely hate UGA.

GATORZONE, your one to be talking. The turds final score was not reflective of how many holes you have on defense. The Hawaii qb is probably the worst one in the NCAA still moved the ball constantly on you in the first half. Hawaii dominated you the entire first quarter up-front and Urbar Crier looked worried. Please note…your db’s and safety’s are NOT SEC caliber and I think will cost you 3-4 games. Your offense is strong, no doubt, but don’t be too confindent about that score on Saturday.

This is a truly groundbreaking column. I hadn’t thought of any of the points made here AND no one else has bothered to state any of this before—I am really impressed.

I can’t believe ESPN or SI haven’t offered you a permanent position on their staff!! You are so underrated Terence! UNDERRATED—clap, clap, clap, clap-clap clap!

*I know, responding to his blogs only egg him on and keep him gainfully employed—-I just couldn’t help myself.

Terence, as a 1980 UGA journalism grad, I salute you!

You are absolutely correct in your assessment except:

I believe UGA can lose one non-conference game AND an SEC game and still go to the BCS as long as UGA beats UF and UT, wins the east and wins the SEC Championship game.

Don’t worry about the McCain supporters on here who don’t like uppity black folk!! Forgive them for they know not what they do!

Terrence is right. I said the same thing in response to a column yesterday. The Dawgs need to have a goal of winning every game, one game at a time. That’s what it takes to be national champion. One loss is a probably good enough to make the title game and 2 losses is highly unlikely to end in a national championship chance. Nothing else really matters. Just win and there will be no debate.

It’s all perception Terrence. Personally I could care less about preseason rankings and I’m all in favor of not having them until the middle of the season. But seeing that it’s all about money, that isn’t going to happen. USC is a good team and played well Saturday and I don’t mind them being ranked 1#. What I do mind is this sudden double standard that folks in the media have. If the roles were reversed, with UGA blowing out team like Virgina 52-7 and USC beating some nobody team: the folks at ESPN would go nuts if UGA jumped USC. It’s SOOO biased, they’re worse than Fox News. Another fact that they fail to mention is that UGA plays 6-7 quality opponents throughout the season while USC plays 3. That’s why the National Championship means nothing in college football because it’s decided by committees and computer rankings and not on the field. Voters will continue to choose USC b/c they are a name brand, regardless of how well they play on the field.

Tony Barnhart is the idiot: “I have a rule that if you start the season #1, you stay there uless you lose”. It’s that mentality that totally degrades the greatest sport in the world. And proves the season is worthless as only preseason rankings matters. Get a frikin playoff. This sport and these kids deserve it. Don’t let AARP writers decide who’s “the best”

Once again, its the media that is making this out to be such a big deal.

Terrence I agree with you on this one & have been saying just the same to all my friends who are Dawg fans or Alums. Bottom line is if UGA wins every game then they’ll play for the BCS Title. I saw were Cullen Harper of Clemson said that all there goals are still attainable. My thought is that might be wishful thinking because if they win out from here on & if USC or OSU are undefeated while UGA, Mizzou or OU has one 1 loss after winning there conference championship. Do you think Clemson would go to the BCS championship game over on them? NO WAY! If the ACC fairs better going forward that might change but right now it looks like Clemson blew its shot at the NC on Saturday night. Anyway…GO Dawgs! One game at a time!

@SC - @ASU - vs Bama - @LSU - vs UF - @AU.

There is no way UGA gets out of these games with only one loss. Come December, you’re probably looking at a three loss season at best. Too bad Bama and LSU are on rotation for this season instead of the Mississippi’s or Hogs.

Here we go again. Last year they stole a chance from Georgia to compete for a national Title in which I believe they would have won. Now this year they are doing the same thing.

They continue to disrespect The Georgia Bulldogs time after time and again and again. We can see by now that the Big Ten and the Pac Ten has always been an favorite for the media, and now to include them being over rated.

Look what the SEC did to Oho State Last year when they Put them in BCS national Title game against SEC Power House LSU. They were Demoralized. Look What Georgia Power House Did to Hawaii From the Pac 10. They were Demoralized. Hawaii is in the Pac 10 and Ohio State is in the Big 10.

They are both over rated Conferences and the SEC has to continue to prove that we are by far the toughest Conference in NCAA Football. You talk about Georgia playing a a Divison 1 AA School last week and beat them which was not considered a quality win. But look at USC. They play Virginia has in not a contender either and beat them. So what the Heck?

Georgia should have remained number 1 regardless of the win and how they win. USC conference is a weak conference as apparent in the polls. In the top 10, there are at three SEC Schools there. How many are there in the Pac 10 and Big 10? Enough said!!

Dont worry Dawgs. Just from this point on, run the numbers up on the remaining opponents, and prove to these Nay - Sayers that The Dawgs are Number 1.

Terrence,

I totally agree with you on this issue! The DAWGS needs to win! I’m glad that they are not rank #1 because that will give them a goal is to reach number ONE at the end of the season. Also, this will not make them a big target on the radar screen. I would love to see Southern Cal (USC) vs UGA in the BCS championship game. The DAWGS will show the world why they should be #1 at the end of the season.

GO MOREHOUSE/GA TECH & GA DAWGS!

MDawg,

You’ve got it right. In fact, any coach who ever uttered that old cliche (see below) got it right, at least when it comes to situations such as the one involving Georgia.

One game at a time.

Hopefully, for Georgia’s sake, it also will be one victory at a time.

I definitely feel like UGA gets little respect from ESPN and the other national sports media outlets, despite the high ranking and obvious talent. On the halftime shows for Saturday’s other games, the only “highlight” they showed for the UGA games was when Moreno limped into the endzone with cramps. The announcer said something about it not being good when your star RB goes out with a hamstring and you only have an average O-line. All that probably played into UGA being ranked lower (though they still got a lot of 1st place votes). At any rate the lower ranking and the lack of respect from ESPN et al will hopefully motivate UGA to prove what they can do each week on the field and also give the team something to work toward. I hope they stay angry and have a chip on their shoulder for every game of the season, just like they did against Hawaii.

WOW Terence…Win your games and win the national championship. Is that the best that you can come up with?

Did you give Mark May or Lou Holtz proper credit for those comments. I mean they only say that about 10 times a year. For the last 10 years.

Next you will tell us, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Or something creative like neither a borrower nor a lender be.

Please…my five year old could write more creative articles then you.

And let me give you a message about your just win and your in logic….

Can you Say Auburn. I recall they went 13-0 not long ago and watch someone else get a national championship trophy.

Eric Hawaii is in WAC, way below PAC 10.

UGA needs to win SEC to go to NC game. I also thought they would have won it all given the chance but they need to win SEC first.

By Ed

September 3, 2008 4:15 PM | Link to this

I agree, stop this B.S. Just win the SEC, then you can worry about where you fall in the polls or BCS standings. The hype surrounding this team is out of control. If Georgia wins the NC, it will be a miracle, especially with the injuries.

If the Dawgs get through the season with one loss, if they beat LSU and UF back-to-back, if they win the SEC Championship game, then they will become one of the great Georgia teams of all time, I will be eternally proud of them, and couldn’t care less what the BCS does after that. That org lost all credibility with me when it put a two-loss team in the title game last year, only three years after shutting out a perfect Auburn team. The BCS can keep their fake crystal trophy - it means no more than the mythical AP poll or the old UPI poll.

By Kendawg

September 3, 2008 4:17 PM | Link to this

Fortunately, this poll is not very important in the long run. All that matters is that we continue winning. With the depth that CMR is developing each week, that should be easier as time goes on. Running up the score by leaving your starters in is not going to win those tough games at the end of the season. CMR knows this and is proceeding accordingly.

You people cry like a 3 year old. RESPECT earn it. You did not even win the east last year and you think you got screwed by the BCS. They gave you a creampuff bowl win. Be thankful. You dislike Mr. Moore so much then why read and respond. I am sorry but class acts don’t continually have players missing the first game because of “PROBLEMS”. Truth is you are a top 10 team but not 1, 2, or 3 yet. You have done nothing to deserve that rank since beating TECH last year.

By Georgia Fan

September 3, 2008 5:20 PM | Link to this

“If you hate TM it’s simple, don’t read it.”

I didn’t read a word of it. Let me take a wild guess: Georgia fans need to stop whining about dropping in the rankings. Georgia needs to do its talking on the field if its so tough. The schedule is brutal. Everybody is out to get Georgia. Every team on Georgia’s schedule only cares about beating Georgia. Southern Cal is so obviously better than Georgia because I’m Terrance Moore and I said so. Oh, and I almost forgot the obligatory shout out to Florida and more whining about last year’s excessive celebration penalty.

I’ll bet someone $100 I’m right on the money. Terrance Moore is the most boring and predictable sports writer in America. Controversial? Sure, if you consider the color of the sky a controversial topic then I guess Terrance Moore is controversial.

Andy, that was ABC’s “expert” Craig James. His comment was that UGA didn’t need to get its star running back injured with an average offensive line. He made this comment HOURS after it had been established that Moreno was not injured and only suffered from cramps. I’m sure this clown gets a vote in the AP poll. It makes too much sense for him not to.

USC can beat anyone in the SEC….period. Jawja can match up with the first 11, but not the second and third teams. The Trojans are awesome. Jawja had better hope that USC beats Ohio State because the Bucks will run the table and go unbeaten. That leaves only one spot for either Jawja or USC. Jawja will never beat Arizona State,LSU,Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Auburn and South Carolina. Vandy, Kentucky and Tech will not be pushovers either. Wow!!! That schedule is unbelivable. Good luck Dawgs.
