Richt must eliminate Georgia’s ‘knuckleheads’

If you’re a decision-maker with Georgia’s football program, and if you wish to give your talented Bulldogs their best shot at winning a national championship this season, you just can’t spend the offseason having two, three, or four of your players arrested.

You just can’t.

The Bulldogs have had seven and counting, by the way.

It makes you wonder if coach Mark Richt jumps whenever his Blackberry beeps. “Well,” he said, after a long pause over the phone, “the main thing is, I’m sad when anything like (the arrest of a Georgia player) happens. Just like you would if it was your own son. You’re sad when somebody in your own family makes a mistake or gets hurt or whatever it might be. When things like this come up, you hate to hear it. But these guys are human. They do make poor decisions at times.”

That’s true, especially since we’re talking about those between the often wild ages of 18 to 22. Richt also likes to suggest that the bulk of the 130 or so players in his program are closer to Wally Cleaver than Eddie Haskell. Several Bulldogs took a mission trip to Honduras and worked on summer projects spanning from Habitat for Humanity to Camp Sunshine.

Plus, the publicly laid-back image of Richt is somewhat of a fraud. Just ask the Florida Gators. They were stunned along with everybody else last season in Jacksonville after Richt ordered his Bulldogs to charge into the end zone after their first touchdown to celebrate enough to get a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The point is, Richt swings a big stick behind the scenes before and after one of his players becomes a knucklehead.

“I just wish everybody could see how often we do have those conversations. How often we do sit down with these guys as a group, as individuals, as positions coaches in meetings, and it’s a constant message,” said Richt, who frequently ignores the university’s guidelines for punishment by doubling the penalties for his players.

Added Richt, “The bottom line is, they’re going to pay a price for what they did, and then we move forward. In the meantime, shoot, I can’t tell you how many good things are going on this summer. The great majority of them are working their tails off. They’re running. They’re lifting. From what I hear from our seniors and our leaders, they’re showing up, and they’re doing well in school.”

Little of that matters when some of your Bulldogs are spending more time taking mug shots than publicity shots. One guy was arrested and charged with allegedly fracturing the eye socket of another student in a fight. Two other guys were arrested after they were accused of rubbing the belly of a pregnant woman against her wishes. Three guys had alcohol-related arrests, including a DUI. Another guy was charged with speeding and carrying a concealed weapon, but the latter charge was dropped.

If you didn’t know better, you’d think a bunch of Bulldogs are getting full of themselves since they will likely be ranked first or second in most preseason polls. “Uh, I don’t think it’s that at all,” Richt said. “I wish I could tell you what I know about every situation, because I don’t think you would relate those two things at all.”

Well, whatever is causing these Georgia knuckleheads, Richt and his folks need to find more ways to stop it, like now.

TM: This is not the first time a college athlete is in trouble. It happens to all schools across the country. Yes, their is a lot on the line, but boys will be boys. With the exception of the OL incidents..everyone else was 2nd or 3rd string. The prego story is a he said/she said…so let it go. Were not running THUG U like Dade County Prison..MIAMI. Once again, Richt did not ORDER the TEAM to charge the end zone. He wanted the 11 offensive players on the field to kick up a little attitude. To keep writing this, you are calling coach Richt a liar. Between you two, I’ll put my money on Richt !

Wow, another negative column about the Bulldogs from Terrance. I’m shocked! It’s a bunch of college kids who screw up and get caught. They deserve their punishments if they do something wrong. I don’t think it should reflect on the team as a whole.

Rightly or wrongly, Colin Cowherd said it best when he said the quality of a football program can be related to the number of arrests the teams has in the offseason. Now, in no way am I condoning actions of the guys and the allegations leveled against them, but it does appear that the better the team is, the more that team has to deal with arrests of players. On the bright side, at least the guys whose names are in the paper for getting in trouble are not named Stafford, Moreno, Green, King, etc.

Hey Terance, can you make a deal with us? When charges against players are dropped, will you please make a headline of that and not bury it in the back page of the paper? Are you man enough to do that?

Terrance,

You are a moron, but I agree with you. Although we are talking about teenagers and young twentysomethings, they should be dismissed from the program for ANY arrest. By getting a free ride to college because you are quick or can throw a nice pass, you should be held to a higher standard. I should forward my student loan bills to some of these kids. Perhaps then they will realize how lucky and blessed they are. Or they could work fulltime and school at night?

If richt does kick these players off the team the next Terrence Moore article will be about punishing black players and robbing them of their opportunity for an education from a major college; etc. etc. One part of the article says Richt carries a “big stick” and often doubles the university sanctioned penalties for the players who violate the rules; yet another part of the article says Richt needs to do more. Just another stupid article from Terrence Moore. I wish the AJC would switch him to the comics section; atleast there Terrence would have some credibility.

Do some research Terence. 7 players of 130 is roughly 5.4%. During a student’s 4-year college career, there is a 4.8% chance that they will get in trouble for breaking some type of law - usually alcohol-related. So the UGA football team is 0.6% above the national average. Wow! Citizens of Athens and Atlanta, lock up your wives and daughters, them wild Bulldogs are on the loose. Please! Its funny how you mention race in nearly every article you write, yet its somehow missing from this article. I wonder what the racial breakdown of those 7 players is? Nevermind, I know.

Although I agree with the overall message you are attempting to convey it simply does not change the fact that you truly seem to be BITTER about something and I just don’t understand why a man with such a long career in journalism wants to be looked up with the same disdain as some do with Pete Rose and Bobby Knight for their late career meltdowns.

By Desert Dawg

Agreed, a few bad apples always cause problems and Georgia football is definitely in the spotlight this year.

But, the record speaks for itself. Just look at the actions taken by Dennis Felton this year. Mark Richt will just as tough. Young kids will make mistakes…it is part of the maturity process. The idea that Georgia is recruiting the wrong people or ignoring a situation is completely false.

There will always be some off the field problems as some people “just don’t get it”. I can’t think a better person for young people to learn to “get it” than Mark Richt. He and his collegues at Georgia are some of the best (if not the best) in the nation when it comes to mentoring, counseling and disciplining young student athletes.

I’ll get concerned when we don’t hear about any dicipline problems. Many programs simply ignore them and hope they will go away. Kudos to the Dawgs for dealing with them in a fair and open manner.

You’ve made a career off of basing your writing on assumtions, not facts. You even state that one of the charges was dropped. So basically one arrest is for going 10 mph over the speed limit - that’s out of control!?!?

Your article is a day late and only around to stir up more publicity for a non-issue. College students being college students - end of story. As always, when you are dealing with 18 to 22 year olds, you are going to have some rotten apples in the sack. Some simply make bad decisions. Others simply are not good people, no matter what the coaches or their teammates do. Every school has their bad apples, not just Georgia. The bad apples tend to reveal themselves in bunches. Another school will soon experience the same thing. This is no real reflection on Georgia’s program, players, or it’s head coach. It is a reflection on the parents that raised them, or the environment they grew up in. Good article, however. Go Gators!

Terrance, why do continue to lie and say Richt ordered them into the end zone. That is not the way it went down and you know it. He said he would be mad if they did not get a celebration penalty after the 1st touchdown. He did not know the whole team was going to celebrate in the end which which was great. The only way to totally stop 18-22 year old football players from getting into trouble is to drop the sport. That way when they mess up the headlines won’t read FOOTBALL PLAYER IN TROUBLE. They will then just blend into the background with those in trouble whom don’t play sports. This is a tired subject with the AJC. I hate to see any kid in legal trouble but when it becomes isolated to just college football players then it will be real news. Athletes are held more accountable than are the nonathletes.

The players that are getting suspended are not getting full of themselves. They are just acting the way the have been throughout their lives. They are just not getting the free pass anymore because they are football players. They have gotten that pass their whole life because they are good at football and that includes in life and in school. Richt needs to set an example with some of the players getting arrested just as Dennis Felton, UGA basketball coach, did with a couple of players during and after the season.

Terrence, it sounds to me like CMR has the answer to your question, you’re just such a horrible hack writer that you don’t even realize it.

You end this article with the statement: “Well, whatever is causing these Georgia knuckleheads, Richt and his folks need to find more ways to stop it, like now.”

In the paragraph above it, Mark Richt says: ” wish I could tell you what I know about every situation, because I donďż˝t think you would relate those two things at all.ďż˝

What this means Terrence is that each case is specific, and it’s not as easy as saying “the program is out of control with a bunch of big headed, over confident, meat-heads”, which is appearantly the angle you were going for here.

Sidenote - Richt didn’t order the players onto the field to celebrate. He ordered the offensive team on the field to get a celebration penalty after the first TD. Richt has stated numerous times that the entire team running onto the field was unintentional and spontaneous. Do a little research. There are people that post on these sites that do more research than you do. You are a hack. Plain and simple a hack, hack, hack, hack.

It is also worth noting that Florida State had lots of these same criminal player antics while Richt was down there - but they still won 2 National Championships. Like Terence points out, do not be fooled with Richt’s “laid-back image” as that is just smart PR for his recruiting. UGA is not BYU.

Every athelete should get thorough counseling upon registering at UGA, or any college, about illegal behavior. This counselling should require that upon enlisting in any sport, the student abide by, and consent to the following requirements: 1. Upon any arrest, the student should immediately be suspended from play, or practice. Reinstatements would only come upon a finding of not guilty. 2. Pending the outcome of the arrest, or for any subsequent arrest, the student should by moved to a serious conduct suspension, which penalties may include suspension from school. 3. Suspension from school would require repayment for all compensations that the student had received, and any scholarships must be forfeited. These requirements must be agreed to and signed by all atheletes.

You try to control 130 18-22 year old athletes you dumbass. Its like herding cats. I think if you looked at arrest statistics for college students in general, 7 in 130 is probably below average. Everybody knows that kids party and drink while underage at college and then acts all shocked when one of them gets arrested. Have your kids every ignored something that you have repeated to them numerous times with negative consequences? I’m going to guess yes.

I am a big admirer or Coach Richt. He is a great coach and a better person. However, I think he is bringing some guys into the program that do not belong because he wants to give them an opportunity. I think Bobby Bowden has done the same at FSU over the years. I would rather see Georgia bypass some of those guys from the beginning.

No one can expect perfection from these young men, but something more needs to be done up front to screen some these guys with character issues out before they enroll.

Mr Moore I would hope you would insist that all schools would require their student atheletes to be held acountable for their actions. I think the Georgia program has traditionally went above and beyond in the way it reprimands their players, most times more severely than their counterparts do. Instead of constantly condeming the tolerances of the UGA staff, maybe you should get all the facts before rushing to judgement. Young men and women will make mistakes, should we just give up on them because of it. Or should we give them consequences and allow them to make the choice whether they learn from that mistake or not.

Two of these arrests were for “rubbing a pregnant woman’s belly without her permission”. Last year we had a guy arrested for driving a scooter the wrong way down a one-way street on a suspended license (thus, the scooter).

Tell me either of these violations would have resulted in an arrest in Tuscaloosa, Knoxville, or Auburn. Or, for that matter, anywhere (college town or not)other than Athens?

True criminals should be punished. The above offenses, no so much.

Unfortunately, knucklehead college students are knuckleheads whether they play sports or not and that goes for any school in the country. Apparently it make for better print given that the good things student athletes do off the field seldom if ever makes headline news by comparison. For the billionth time, any one with the most pedestrian knowledge of the situation is aware that Richt didn’t order his players on the field against UF last year and had no desire for the situation to get out of hand. Richt has admitted his own error in judgment even though his light hearted instructions were taken out of context by an inspired team that went on to win a crucial game. To keep that dead story alive is simply lazy journalism from a writer who can’t be bothered with researching a real story.

Richt is no different than Bowden. The ones that play that get in trouble will sit out against the patsies on the schedule, and non performers will get burried further, or kicked off team to show he has handled the situation. Yeah, starters get 2nd & sometimes 3rd chances so the rules are different depending on playing status. Richt may win some games, but he still is 2 faced!

Wow, How many of you would be this offended if this many Braves players had been arrested and he had written the same article about Bobby Cox? My guess, not near as many. Most of you would side with TM and say it is b/c Bobby “coddles” his players. It makes me laugh how many people criticize the Braves for only winning one WS and then load up each Saturday to go watch a team that hasn’t won it all since when, 80?

I like UGA and Richt, didn’t sign Uga’s guestbook or anything when he died, but all the same like them. Just think that people are real quick to jump on the Braves and the Falcons, but don’t want to deal with reality when it comes to beloved UGA.

Keeping it in perspective though, they are college age students. Wouldn’t want everything I did in college to have ended up in the papers, I also didn’t have all the special attention and priveleges that the players get either, so you’d think they’d make better choices. Yeah, something should be done, they should make better choices.

I asked what if this many players had gotten in trouble on the Braves, but that won’t ever happen. The Braves organization holds a very high standard for their players, they either live up to or are shipped out.

For once and for all, CMR did not order the entire team on the field after Georgia scored first in the Florida game. He told only the 11 offensive players to do so. When are you going to get your story straight? How many times do you have to be told this? When are you going to go find a job somewhere else? As far as the seven players who have gone astray, how many other schools are having similar problems? We know about Georgia’s problems because of the AJC. I am quite sure that Georgia does not have the lock on unruly players. Check out Ole Miss players who stole items from the hotel they stayed at last year. It happens everywhere. Check out the local papers at Auburn, Oxford, Fayetteville, Tallahassee, Knoxville, Columbia. It happens everywhere even schools not in the SEC. Check it out!! I have already done so.

There are really only two possibilities regarding Richt and the disgraceful behavior against UF. Either Richt planned the event in detail, or he has no control over his team, and they simply do as they please. It is impossible to imagine a Paterno or Bryant coached team behaving in a similar manner. Richt condoned and encouraged the sideline dancing during the Auburn game, which was another instance of bad sportsmanship. Beating students senseless,(Chandler,Lemon) assaulting professors,(Kearney) stealing and wrecking an automobile, drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, (Ellerbe) hardly qualify as childhood pranks. Suspension from the first game of the season has done nothing to curb this kind of behavior. Similar behavior at UF, AL, or UT is no justification for what goes on in Athens.

“Saint” Mark Richt is the biggest phony in college athletics. He inherited the title from his mentor, Booby Bowdon, who has become too senile to know any better.

It’s no surprise that UGA fans bow and scrape at the feet of “Saint” Mark. After all, the members of the Bulldawg Nation are like the vast majority of today’s sports fans: they don’t care how many of “their” players get arrested, as long as the team wins every Saturday.

The fact that so many UGA fans consider “Saint” Mark a disciplinarian just goes to show how deluded the Bulldawg Nation has become.

But what I don’t understand is why the media has given “Saint” Mark the same pass it previously awarded to Booby.

I realize that the media, like the UGA fans, feel “honored” to be in the presence of such a great and good man. I’m sure the reporters are charmed when “Saint” Mark smiles and calls them by their names.

But, come on, folks. How many players have to be arrested before you start to ask yourselves, “Why do ‘Saint’ Mark’s recruits get into so much trouble”?

I understand that big-time college football is a win-at-all-costs business, but why aren’t more reporters bothered by “Saint” Mark’s highly successful efforts to bring so many talented outlaws into Athens?

By SickandTired

July 7, 2008 7:26 PM | Link to this

Georgia fans can’t seem to come to grips with the fact that Saint Mark is no different from Bobby Petrino. He says one thing and then goes and recruits punks that he only hopes he can keep eligible and out of jail so he has to recruit more of them to reach back and grab when those get in trouble. FSU North is right there in Athens. The fans will justify anything Dawg players do wrong and at the same time condemn other schools for the same freaking thing. Dawg punks are better than Gamecock punks if I’m reading right. Well I guess the real problem is Dawg Punks can’t stand up to Gator Punks and Tiger Punks and it’s killing the Dawg Fans. I think that is about sums it up. Dawg Fans, the most delusional fans on the planet. How old is Herschel now?

It is amazing how being a winning coach can let you get away with things and for people to look the other way. If this was Jim Donnan or Ray Goff (who oh just happen to only beat Florida or Tenn once every blue moon and even struggle against mighty Ga Tech), everyone would be ready to stone them and say they are “losing control of the team.” Once you are a winner, the response is more like “oh, boys will be boys” and they are “wild like all 18-22 year olds.” It is always nice to open every year against an oponent the quality of your average high school team so all those off field problems the season before can be suspended for the likes of NW Lousiana and Troy and whatever cup cakes always start the season off with.

I do agree with a poster above who stated that most of the charges are a routine part of college life. Kids being kids. The brutal beating is another story.

As for Richt and his “innocence” with the UGA/UF game, he DID order his players to get a 15 yd. penalty. Did he think college kids were going to miss out on that opportunity to “act the fool” ? Give me a break. His smug look during and after the celebration told it all. Folks, CMR was trained by Sweet Ole’ Bobby and the apple fell directly under the tree.

Terrence….I applaud your article which I totally agree. Mark Richt has done a poor job in assessing character in the young men he recruits, not to mention of not making them aware of the big microscope they venture under as well. The fans that are ripping you for pointing out these serious issues at hand, are only making excuses and looking through rose colored glasses. Both Damon Evans and CMR are not getting the job done and now its time for Michael Adams to step in and take charge in handling the situation which is becoming an apparent problem.

As ussual the dawgs care about nothing but winning the games. They want to do nothing but find ways to cheat the system and get upset when they are caught…. right brought alot of things to UGA from FSU including the crimal part. The problem with taking any action is they only have 2 weak games at the start of the season and thats all they will EVER get suspended for. Right should try to follow auburn or other programs and really suspend them. If you suspended every player that needed to be…. 2/3 of the team would be gone. And Dawg nation…. get ready…. you wont get a national championship this year either.

ATHENS — University of Georgia basketball player Jeremy Jacob has decided to leave the Bulldog program and will transfer to another school, head coach Dennis Felton announced Monday.

Jacob, a 6-7 forward from Baton Rouge, La., played in the first six games of the 2008 season as a true freshman, averaging 5.2 points and 3.3 rebounds. However, he suffered a stress fracture in his left foot in that sixth game and missed the remainder of the season.

“Jeremy has expressed an interest in playing for a program where he can play a more prominent role than he believes he will play at Georgia,” Felton said. “We have thoroughly enjoyed our time together. We wish Jeremy the very best for his future.”

Because Jacob appeared in less than 20 percent of Georgia’s total of 34 games last season, he was granted a medical hardship by the NCAA and therefore, he will have four years of eligibility remaining.

Terrence….I applaud your article and I couldn’t agree with you more. CMR and his staff hasn’t done a good job in assessing character in the young men they recruit. Apparently CMR isn’t doing a great job in informing players about the big microscope that they venture under as well. Terrence…. I wouldn’t be too concerned about all these fans ripping you on pointing out reoccurring problems that needs to be addressed. Sounds to me like Terrance had his article written and called CMR. If you look at CMR’s comments, I think they’re great. I respect the man for not publicly discussing these situations. I also don’t see the connection between ranking and these problems. If you compare these problems to any other major football program, they’re pretty normal.

Richt certainly has a role to play in leading the young athletes that play for his football team. but he is not able to watch over each and every one of them all the time. How about some criticism for the families of these athletes. Football coaches can only do so much. These young men need family members to keep them grounded and make it clear they are not above the rules.

Here Terence “Mooron”

How many times will you bring up that Florida thing. I want to see you look CMR in the face and call him a liar when he said many times that it was a mis-communication between what he intended (the 11 players on offense celebrating) and what happened (the entire team celebrating). If you ever use the word “fraud” and Coach Richt’s name in the same sentence, the entire Dawg Nation will run you out of town and send you back to Indiana.

Read Richt’s quote: “…Just like you would if it was your own son…” That’s right out of the Bobby Bowden “Look the Other Way, Aw Shucks, They’re Just Boys” playbook. Never forget that your angelic coach is just a Hurricane-playing, Nole-coach dressed up in red-and-black Dawg clothing. Once a low-life, always a low-life. No matter how much Richt “angels up” for the gullible Bulldog faithful absolutely desperate for national recognition for the first time in generations, he’s still just a Cane and a Nole underneath. Terrance, Was going to wait for story to appear, but it seems like now might be the time. Are you aware of one of the largest newspapers in America that is working on a story about Georgia and Clemson’s ability to parlay “the religious environment” associated with their 2 coaches into a huge advantage when working the mommas and grandmas of the Southeast. Bobby Bowden is too old for it to work anymore, but his son and his thought to be successor have even outdone the master into casting themselves as ‘holier than thou”. Should be very interesting when story comes out.

Name another school, in any conference in America——-SEC, Big 10, Big 12, PAC 10, ACC, MountainWest—Okay, I’ll give you Brigham Young, Heck, even Notre Dame doesn’t use religious affiliation to this extent——-that has a coach who utilizes religious beliefs to extent Tommy and Mark do?? I’m a proud Auburn alum and teach at Appalachian. Three national championships in a row and the ability to be on the same field with any team in the country with probably a fifth of their resources. Coach Moore recruits character as opposed to these FBS coaches who are so grossly overpaid and under so much pressure. No wonder this pressure moves down to their players and turns so many of them into thugs. Of course that makes the assumption these players weren’t talented, spoiled thugs to begin with. This whole mini-NFL thing is so boring when compared to FCS. Want to see some REAL college football? Go to a game in Statesboro and cheer for (the real) GSU.

Being a true blue Auburn man, i defend CMR, yes he is ‘loose” on discipline, but he maintains ethics and character through athletes who care more about their self-gratification than the program. The news media is looking for a story and many times stresses the worst for the innocent. UGA has some BAD APPLES as other SEC schools, but bottom line is WINNING and Coach Richt has produced school, fans and alumni since his arrival from FSU. The real difference is: COACH SABAN SUSPENDS WR BROWN (3RD TIME)FOR ONE GAME,,WHILE LOSING TO LA MONROE HE PUTS HIM INTO THE GAME. HE WAS SUSPENDED FOR THIRTY MINUTES…THIS IS DIFFERENCE IN CHARACTER AND FAULT. Be proud of your system, its working pretty good..

I know one of the men personally, and you knew him you would not call him a knucklehead. He is a smart man. He has made a mistake by being involved in this incident. And should be given another chance. You have to remember that this men a college age men, and a going to make mistakes. I am sure you did somethings when you were that age that were illegal, and you were not punished in the way that you are asking Coach Richt to punish these men. You are no better than Don Imus.I know that you wrote this column to get the “homer” comments from the UGA fans, I am a GT fan and still find your comments to be out of line. Maybe if you took the time to learn about these men, you would not be quick to judge them. But the key is to take the time to find out the character of these men, before you judge them.

Lemon’s assault aside— and it needs to be dealt with strongly— I don’t believe that UGA’s players are worse than anyone else’s. What i do believe, as rumor indicates, is that the Athens Police Dept. has a chip on its shoulder against the football team. Most of the stuff the last few years were pretty minor kids with beers kind of stuff. I’ll guarantee you in Gainesville and Knoxville if they see a couple of football players walking down the road with a beer they send them home, not to jail, but Athen’s finest always seem to have to prove themselves. I’m not condoning underage drinking but you’d have to round up half the college students in America if you wanted to be consistent.

You bring up a good point. If Georgia football players continue to get into trouble — for whatever reason — then it would be time for Damon Evans as AD to get more involved.

Not that he isn’t quite involved now with these situations.

If Evans’ methods don’t work in conjunction with those of Richt, then President Adams has to come into play.

Richt is correct in suggesting that a lot of this can’t be controlled, but just the thought of seven arrests in a matter of months is ridiculous.

Eight, nine, etc. That would be beyond outrageous.

By Travis

Dear Mr. Moore, After reading these detached ideas that you have put together and called an editorial, the only thing that you have made clear is that there are some college football players that attend UGA that are “knuckleheads”. Well, I hope that it didn’t take you a great deal of time to figure that out.

As an intelligent writer, I hope that you would have noticed that most football teams (and universities) tend to be a reflection of the society in which we live. There are intelligent people and not so intelligent people. There are rich people and there are poor people. There are those who make wise decisions and those who don’t make wise decisions. There are needy people and there are those that go on mission trips to help those in need. There are those who deal with these kids every day and there are those who sit behind a desk and pass judgement (good or bad) on what’s being done.

Unfortunately as a coach, you can’t make decisions for your players 24x7, just as a parent can’t make decisions for their kids 24x7, or a preacher make decisions for their congregation 24x7. You know as well as I do that you teach these kids the best that you can and you have to let them go. And when they mess up, and at some point most will (some worse than others) you have to discipline them.

It doesn’t take a Tech graduate to figure out that a football team competing for a national championship doesn’t need anyone arrested in the off-season.

Terence, CMR is far from being a fraud; he’s a class individual & one the best coaches in the game! However, I will admit he needs to crack down on this type of foolishness. I think it starts with recruiting…he needs to aim for more rounded players (with integrity) ala Southerland, David Greene, David Pollack, etc. Many of these 5-star recruits are too full of themselves & think they can just ride on raw talent. CMR & Coach Garner do an awesome job of landing top-notch talent, but need to be more selective of character when recruiting. I’d suggest a 1-2 strike arrest policy. Perhaps a default 3-5 game suspension for first offense & then removal from the team (upon second offense). To re-cap, CMR is a great coach/person, but needs to crack down a bit more on behavior & tighten up recruiting (based on character).

By Georgia Fan

July 8, 2008 9:37 AM | Link to this

I think that was a pretty good piece other than the seemingly random Florida excessive celebration reference. Terrance actually put things in perspective, something the AJC rarely does. Its only 7 players out of 130. 5% of the team should not be a reflection on the entire program. The individuals responsible for these incidents will be punished accoringly and the rest of the team will go about its business. This will all be forgotten once everyone straps on the gear for summer practice. Sorry haters.

Now, about that Florida game Terrance. For the love of god man just GET OVER IT. You just sound bitter at this point. It happened. Its over. Nobody got hurt. The only things that got hurt were some fragile Gator emotions and Georgia’s defense. You might remember the next series when Florida took advantage of 30 yards of penalties to score a touchdown. No harm no foul. Its all even steven. This incident has absolutely nothing to do with Georgia’s off field incidents this off season.

And I have no idea what you have against Mark Richt. It is befuddling. The guy just coaches football as best he can and keeps his mouth shut. A fraud? So you think he is a phony Terrance? Well then smart guy, why don’t you fill us in on the real Mark Richt since you know so much about him. Have at it. We’re all ears.

I think Richt is handling things just fine. Munzenmaier and Boling got 2 game suspensions and Baldwin got 1. Richt is holding off on Sturdivant, Anderson and Lemon until those cases are decided, and the concealed weapon charge against Lomax was dropped so no punishment from him. I think that Richt will be firm in his punishment with Lemon if the allegations prove to be true (possible removal from the team) and the Sturdivant/Anderson situation sounds like overblown by the alleged “victim” Only 53 more days! Hey Rich, I guess you are right. When Richt is not building a house for habitat for humanity, taking church trips to central America to help those less fortunate, and adopting children from war-torn areas of the world, I’m sure he’s a real hell raiser. Everything that has gone on with UGA football players is par for any college football program. When the players are beating their girlfriends and firing Uzis from the dorm balconies, then we have a problem. TM is just the poster boy for Affirmative Action, but please AJC Editors I know their is a black sports columnist somewhere that has a point to be made.

Is the Sports World that hard up for news this week? Who are you kidding Terrance? Obviously you don’t have kids in college and are clueless. You forget that these guys are still kids. They are going to do the things that a lot of college boys and girls do.. Screw up. Yet, I am sure the college coaches realize this when they bring them on board and this is not the Marines we are talking about. This has been going on from the days when there was no football around. Get a grip and let the players be punished and screw your opinion aobut kicking them off the team. I am sure you are not perfect and never have been. WHile it is impossible to control the players you recruit, it appears many of the Bulldawg faithful are missing the point.

Richt should remove players that get arrested (in some instances, not all) but instead he follows the Bowden model of giving them more chances.

Yes, we all know all schools have problem players. The Gators had a player use a deceased lady’s credit card. However, Meyer IMMEDIATELY kicked the guy off of the team.

Therein lies the difference between how Richt talks and handles his program. All religious acting, while rehabilitating (sweeping problems under the rug) players.

Same as Bowden!

Everyone seems to gloss over the fact that these guys are getting a free ride and if they do not appreciate it enough to keep their nose clean for 4 years, they deserve to be kicked off of the team. 20 years ago, this would not even be a point of debate. We have gotten so accustomed to this kind of incident that everyone treats it like it is no big deal.

If you get a free ride through college, the least you can do is abide by the law. If not, you should lose that free ride. That includes everyone, not just UGA. The difference is, most schools kick the arrested players off of the team.

Typical THUGA. How many arrests under CMR’s watch? Yet he is still potrayed by the Jawja faithful & the SEC for that matter as Saint Richt. Richt is a fabulous coach but appears to have the moral ineptitude of his mentor Bobby Bowden down @ Free Shoes University. Check the record on which coaches set an example for their players in the SEC and which don’t. Richt is in the latter category. Richt rates only slightly above CPF & CRZ as a discliplinarian. Running the steps all summer & getting chewed out doesn’t appear to be an effective form of discipline for getting arrested beacuse off season after off season the arrests keep piling up. Even if he suspends the players for their game against GSU and/or Central Michigan is that really going to send a message to his players that they don’t have free reign over Athens? I seriously doubt it.

I just gradutated from UGA and those football players think they are God and have a sense of entitlement. They know that the athletic association will get them out of it. Everyone reading Terrence’s articles…stop.

Terrence, you love this. You are more than likely sitting at home in your lair pondering to yourself, “How can I get my name spoken a little bit more at office water cooler’s around Georgia today.”

I am a Bulldog fan and respect any 18-22 year old at any academic institution who can participate in athletics while balancing school work. You are too quick to judge and the percentages are more than likely astounding in terms of kids who particpate in college athletics that actually do GREAT things in the offseason. Even the kids who do get in trouble are more than likely inherently good. Drinking beer does not make you evil, and making mistakes and paying for the consequences makes you human.

So, are you not human?

Sorry I digressed a bit.

You on the other hand like to judge immediatly without facts so you can get your name out there. I’m sure you have never made an error in judgement ie drank some ice cold American products when you were not of age. Fights happen, they are big deals and punsihments are handed out. It is not like NOTHING is being done.

Instead, why not try doing a WEE BIT of journalism, and find a story about the numerous players on UGA/TECH/INSERT TEAM HERE that have truly done some great things this offseason.

Its obvious that 95 percent of the people do not like you that respond to your so called articles. You might get the occasional Tech fan or Florida fan who agrees with you and will say some malarkey about Richt benig soft or what not…but as soon as you bash thier school to get a rise out of that population, they hate you to. Like I said you love this.

The difference between you and guys like Rick Reilly, Tony Kornheiser, Wilbon, Woody Paige…and even Jeff Schultz in Atlanta, will occasionally look for stories that make you really WANT to open the paper. “Shock sports journalism” can only take you so far Terrence.

But a note to the numerous people who have responded…DO NOT AND THIS MAN WILL GO AWAY

Football is a violent sport, and to a certain extent, you get what you pay for. However, my son was an NCAA athlete at a Div I school for five years. Never once did anybody on his team get arrested in all the time he was there. In fact, they conducted themselves with dignity and honor, and were a tremendous credit to their school.Granted he was a runner, and they usually just don’t have the energy to go out and get into trouble.

UGA needs to tell all their athletes, that they have been given a tremendous opportunity. There are kids standing in the wings who will gladly take their places if they fail to conduct themselves properly. Richt needs to tell everybody with that program, “Tighten up! You guys are embarrassing the bulldog nation!”

Just behave and keep your nose clean. A point spent on too many athletes. (Mike Vick is a good example) These guys are coddled from the time they are 12 years old. It is all too typical, and to be expected to see them act above the law. There is no consequences other than additional laps at practice or game suspensions.
True consequences would require removal from the program.

Seven arrests are difficult to comprehend, especially when coaches and administrators repeatedly remind the players about staying out of trouble.

At the same time, columnists often look at various issues related to sports and explore them. But it has become increasingly obvious through the years that Terence Moore and other AJC sports columnists have been assigned roles and/or positions to take on certain issues. While that is certainly within the right of an editor, it also decreases the objectivity of the writers and their work becomes detrimental to the quality of the paper and writers’ careers.

If that were not the case, why would anyone attack the legacy of a mascot, when everyone in the South and throughout the country know the fervor Georgia fans have for UGA? The same goes for this piece.

True, there are knuckleheads at Georgia and other colleges and universities, but why not balance the piece with a review of work by players with Habitat for Humanity? I know it doesn’t sound like hard news, but it’s always amazing the impact this type of work has on the players and the community they are helping.

Throughout my career as a journalist, I have written numerous stories about crimes and misdemeanors — and I never flinched from my journalistic duty! At the same time, I never backed down from writing a good feature-styled column on the good works by coaches/athletes or other folks in the community.

Stories like that can only be accurately articulatedd in print, and they become great historical reference points to future journalists and other researches. It’s time for the AJC do to more than assign roles for its sports columnists and let them write about the true, and underreported, facets of the lives and activities of student and professional athletes and coaches.

Dear AJC,

Terrance Moore is horrible. It’s one thing to be a bad writer, it’s another to continually be a bad writer and to not get the facts right. Again in this piece of “journalism” he has inaccuracies. He states “Plus, the publicly laid-back image of Richt is somewhat of a fraud…last season in Jacksonville after Richt ordered his Bulldogs to charge into the end zone after their first touchdown to celebrate enough to get a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.” This is completely untrue. Richt has stated in numerous interviews that he only asked to players to make an emotional statement with their celebration of the team’s first score, he never “ordered the team to charge the field”. This crap is probably why your newspaper is considered a joke around the country and why you have to pay telemarketers to bother Atlantans every day trying to get your circulation up.

Terence, It clearly does not really matter to you what kind of legal troubles the players are in. All you really care about is having a new negative UGA article to write to rile people up. It could be about the Uga mascots, endzone celebrations, the SEC and a playoff system, or something else, as long as you feel it gives you enough ammo for another attack on UGA, you are clearly content. What exactly did UGA do to you to deserve your constant onslaught?

TM,

Did you go to college? Do you have a memory? Not saying that these incidents are okay but lets get real. If you read studies of the brain and development you would understand, as learned people now do, that the brain is still developing during this timeframe and decision making is one of the last skills learned. There are other college students making the same stupid mistakes as these athletes but it rarely makes the news. And, many times these other college students’ parents have enough money to make sure they get out or it never makes the news. With athletes, many of their families don’t have the means to keep thier name out of the paper and couldn’t if they did because everyone wants to make athletes mistakes such a big deal - like you. Get a grip.

If you’re sick of listening to GT fans talking about their tough academics then go to UGA’s website and Tech’s website. At UGA you can earn “degrees” in a variety of subjects. At Tech you can earn “degrees” in a variety of engineering disciplines. However, if you are in GT’s “Management” program, as most of their athletes are, you’ll notice they can only earn “Certificates”. Academics my rear end! This is what the fourth year in a row there have been numerous athletes from UGA arrested? The quality of the character of the student athletes has plummeted as they pull strings to get these guys into collge that obviously have no business in college at all. Terrance Moore certainly does not aspire to be a professional journalist. His articles are never imaginative nor clever. Why does the AJC keep this writer of inane repitition?

Moore says “Richt and his folks needs to find”. It’s funny to listen to someone like Moore tell someone like Richt what to do. Richt has more class, integrity, and fortitude in his pinky than Moore could ever imagine having. Richt has lifted football (college & h/s) in the state of Georgia to a level that it’s never been before. Programs across the state have improved because coaches want to be like him and pattern their own programs after his. Sure, a few “knuckle heads” as Moore calls them get in trouble every year. But many of these “knuckle heads” will learn right from wrong and become “real men”. AKA Richtlike
