Urban Meyer draws a crowd in Braves’ clubhouse

You had Urban Meyer right there in a hallway on Wednesday afternoon at Turner Field. So, even though the setting was outside of the home clubhouse, and the Braves were struggling to go north instead of south in the NL East standings, you had to talk football. You had to ask the Big Gator about what nearly was the Big Brawl last October between his Florida team and the victorious one from Athens.

Meyer said, “It wasn’t a brawl.” Then he paused, before adding after he flashed a smile, “It was … I don’t know what you would call it.”

You would call it a classless move by normally classy Mark Richt, the Georgia coach. With his Bulldogs having dropped 15 of their previous 17 games against Florida, he decided they needed additional motivation. That’s why, after Georgia scored first in the game, he ordered his players to rush into the end zone and act crazy enough to get an unsportsmanlike penalty.

One, two, and then a slew of Gators threatened to leave their sideline to charge the massive Dog Pile, but Meyer kept pulling them back.

That was then. Will Meyer be as kind this year when the two teams meet in Jacksonville, with Georgia supposedly chasing a national championship and with Florida likely seeking revenge for the near-brawl, or whatever you call it? “Well, it’s not like we’re in a conference where you just have one game to play,” Meyer said. “We’ve got Tennessee. We’ve got Miami. We’ve got LSU. We’ve got Arkansas. We’ve got South Carolina. We’ll be ready to go for that [Georgia] game, though, but I’m not worried about that now. I’m not having my team worry about that game now.”

Instead, there is the meantime for Meyer in his fourth year at Florida. On Wednesday, “the meantime” had Meyer taking his daughter, Nicole, on a visit to Georgia Tech, where she is interested in playing for the Yellow Jackets’ perennially successful volleyball team. Then Meyer and his 9-year-old son Nate took a taxi from The Flats to Turner Field to watch some of the Braves’ 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers with roving passes for the ballpark.

Meyer also huddled with Mark Lemke, the former Braves second baseman and a current radio guy for the team. They roomed together when they were minor-leaguers for the Braves in the early 1980s. They both were infielders, but Meyer obviously had other plans. That was good for Florida, which won a national championship in his second year. Before the Gators, he was working miracles at Bowling Green and Utah.

So there was Meyer, sitting with his son near a picnic bench in the home clubhouse with a constantly beeping Blackberry in one hand and a sparkling new baseball in the other. He had a captive audience that kept growing. There was third baseman Chipper Jones, the Florida native, with blue and orange in his blood. There was right fielder Jeff Francoeur, who almost was a Clemson Tiger in football. Mostly, there were a bunch of curious Bulldogs lovers and others with allegiances to SEC teams away from Gainesville.

Braves pitcher Tim Hudson shook his head while walking and ignoring the crowd around Meyer. “If I’m going to sit in on that powwow, I need to put on my Auburn gear,” said the former War Eagle star, still walking and ignoring.

I have the UGA/UF game on dvr. I have watched that game many times and NOT once have I seen Urban Meyer pulling players back onto the sideline after the UGA celebration. That is MYTH! Coach Meyer wasn’t pulling players back - in fact he was just standing there with his hands on his head looking dumbfounded. UGA had just called out his teams manhood and he looked as if someone just stole his lunch money. Go watch the tape for yourself - not one player was being restrained by Meyer. I cannot wait for Jax this year!

Mark Richt did not order is “players to rush into the end zone and act crazy enough to get an unsportsmanlike penalty.” He told his players to celebrate until they were penalized. He didn’t intend for the bench to run onto the field, but that happened and what can you do once they’re already on the field. CMR even explained that in a letter printed in the AJC. Typical ingnorance.

Terrence, I didn’t really understand all the haters that always come your way until I read this article. Get your story straight man. Haha look at all the wittle dawgs getting all defensive! Awww its sooo cute.

It’s article-worthy because how many times do AJC sports writers run into the head coach of an in-state school’s biggest rival football team, during a particularly dry part of the year for college football. Gave you something to read didn’t it? Got you fired up for the game didn’t it?

Oh and I also love it how you guys think you have his nuts to the wall by nitpicking that Richt didn’t tell them to rush the field. What difference does it make? He told them to get penalized and they got penalized, Richt shouldn’t be such a wuss and should stand by however his players decided to go about doing that.

For you guys to pretend like you’re so b.a. for correcting (its not even really that) T. Moore for that point are just showing everyone else the insecure fan you are.

It would seem that someone who claims to be a journalist would occasionally work to get the facts…Oh, right, this is TM. CMR did not “order his troops to rush into the end zone.” He did suggest that they show some emotion with the first score. The rest of the “brawl” was simply 18-22 year old kids taking the suggestion a little too far. TM, you continue to amaze with your arrogance. Do you just try to get under folks skin, or is that a natural skill? Doofus!!!

Look at all of the Georgia fans and Richt lovers freaking out when anyone says anything about their beloved coach. He may not have ordered them directly to run out of the field, but let me ask you this. What can you do that’s classy and not unsportsmanlike to get a penalty after a touchdown? Let’s see what only tricks Richt comes with after Georgia loses to LSU and Arizona State. Maybe Silver jerseys? Stomping on the T? Can’e wait to see.

UGA posters playing scribes and pharisees nitpicking and interpreting to defend Richt from classlessness. What a shift in paradigm for a fan base that generally is literacy challenged? Urban showed class by keeping his guys off the field so as to avoid a reply of the U. Miami fiasco on TV a year ago. Richt is scared because he has a losing record against every UF coach he has faced.

No, Terrence, it’s never a bad time to talk Georgia football. But you were not talking about the upcoming season. You were rehashing something that happened eight months ago. Calling it a classless Mark Richt move is simply disrespectful to a classy man and totally uncalled for. Maybe the rushing the field didn’t turn out the way Richt expected, but his team was celebrating with each other. Not the first one of them made a move toward a UF player and there was nowhere near any kind of “brawl.”

Now let’s try to get back to some real journalism without attacking someone who doesn’t deserve it. After all, football season is only two months away.

After that touchdown celebration fiasco, the Dawgs psyche was never the same. They developed a swagger about themselves, and although they beat Vanderbilt the week before they played Florida, they went on to win every game afterwards, including that lopsided, no contest win against Hawaii.

And Knowshon Moreno showing his royal rear-end didn’t help matters for the SEC either.

The sun rises and sets on your crown of gold”…Terence, you are pathetic. Mark Richt has more class than you will ever have. And the thing that p** me off the most, is that you make a title for your article that will entice us UGA fans to read it, but then just take your article in a completely different direction, criticizing our head coach again. So next time you decide to write an article….. DONT….. Keep on rockin Tony Barnhart your the man.

Terrence is either deliberately reporting false information or substituting his opinion for facts. Why not just call CMR a liar? I have heard no other version of what happened that contradicts CMR’s version. Still, an extremely dull read. Well, considering the subject..

“he ordered his players to rush into the end zone and act crazy enough to get an unsportsmanlike penalty.” I’m surprised that a sports journalist in Atlanta is that out of touch with the truth. No wonder people come down on T.M. so hard and often.

Only you- Terance, would call Mark Richt classless. Take a long hard look in the mirror if you want to see classless!

You are a terrible journalist. They keep you around only because of your stupidity and the fact that you p** off everyone in the state of Georgia. If guess you are okay with being an enormous joke.

Anyone who thinks that Richt did not plan this display of poor sportsmanship probably believes that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. I disagree with Terrence’s statement that Richt is “normally classy.” He has as much class as Barry Switzer and Jackie Sherrell.

Urban is a legend in his own mind. After UGA spanks the Gators again and wins the SEC East, Urban will head to the NFL.

So my friend just married into the Cox Communication family (they own the AJC for you transplants), next time I see her I am seriously going to have a chat about getting rid of you TM. Maybe just cutting out all of the free passes you get to sporting events and such will actually make you work for a living.

By the way, Great Job Diamond Dawgs, you actually made watching something ESPN covered fun to watch. Good luck to all you seniors next year and as for the rest of the team great job on giving it your best. Go Dawgs

Ok then lets be fair Terrance.

Urban was basically confused after this happened and tryed to get his own players excited on the sideline at the same time…while crying none the less. Never seen a coach cry more than that jackass.

Weren’t there babies somewhere in the world that needed circumcision and indoctrination into fundamentalim???

Screw Florida.

Correct me if I am wrong..Did not Coach SOS run the score up every year on the dawgs…throwing reverse passes up 30 trying to get to 50 in Athens…do not quiz me on CMR lack of class when UF has proven year after year they have none! Bottom line you can be classless and run the score up or man up like the dawgs did in Jville!!!

I can just see Terence writing this article as he gazes at his framed Urban Meyer head shot signed “With Love, Yours Forever, Urban.” Come on man, you are supposed to be a journalist, taking personal shots at a Coach Richt is unobjective, biased, and a complete lack of ethics and integrity - oh wait, you write for the AJC - way to go man!

Terence how in the world did you come up with the idea of a brawl. It’s numnutz like you who write BS without fact that give respectible journalists a bad rap. Am not sure why AJC keeps you around — it’s certainly not for your insightful reporting!

Hey Chuck when has UGA beat UF and gone on to win the SEC EAST?

Short answer: NEVER

Moore, you wouldn’t know class, or intelligence, if you tripped over it in your living room (presuming you have a living room).

You all certainly have selective memory - Richt said in an interview that he told his team he would be very disappointed if they did not get a celebration penalty when they scored. If you were not on the sideline, you have no earthly idea if he sent them out there or not. I would love to see your reaction if one of your rivals (say Tech, did the same thing when beating you) - you all would be howling about how classless it was for 100 years. REality check - it was a classless, low rent move by Richt that worked. the end justifies the means, right? For once, it was good to see something in the AJC that did not grovel at the feet of UGA and actually spoke the truth.
