Jessica Alba’s eco-friendly home

Jessica Alba’s new home was recently featured in InStyle magazine.

The two-story home in L.A. is a totally eco-friendly production.

Most of the furniture (except the custom made sofas) was bought used and refinished. Alba searched Craigslist and hunted vintage stores and hotel-liquidation warehouses with decorator Kari Whitman for items with an old Hollywood theme.

Other eco-friendly touches include a chlorine free saltwater pool, non-toxic paints and organic linens.

It’s a great design strategy, one I’d love to employ in my own home, but here’s where Mrs. Alba-Warren and I part ways:

1) I’m broke

2) I can’t afford an interior decorator to help me out (see # 1)

What are your tips for a time and cost efficient path to DIY eco-friendly home design?

Don’t be afraid of using a clothesline.

I LOVE when celebrities or other wealthy people have “suggestions” on how to be more environmentally friendly. First of all I ask how many square feet is she heating and cooling for a family of three? What about the water used in their larger tubs, swimming pools, and dual headed showers? What about the environmental impact their 8,000+ sqft homes have on greenspace? Big deal you can afford a Pruis but I guarantee you they consume far more energy than a working class household of four.

But I agree with lovelyliz, clotheslines are great, as well as programmable thermostats, open the windows on a nice day, and use your blinds to let in or keep out sunlight to help heat/cool your house.

This isn’t about design or decor, and I doubt Jessica Alba cleans her own house, but I recommend baking soda and white vinegar as a substitute for oven cleaner. It works! And you won’t lose a lung!
