The Theme Room
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Glamour Magazine featured this image of singer Mariah Carey in her Hello Kitty room.

Wha-huh?
Miss Mariah, who is pushing 40, describes herself as the ultimate little kid as if that’s justification for devoting an entire room in her home to Hello Kitty.
I’m no Hello Kitty hater (I might even have a few items of my own), but an entire room? I figured Mariah just had so many rooms to spare, that it didn’t matter. Then I began to notice a trend among the non-celebrity population:
A guy (also about 40) who devoted an entire room to fraternity paraphernalia
A guy (30ish) with a room devoted to his fave college football team
A woman (40ish) with a room full of Barbie dolls, Barbie cars, Barbie houses, Barbie friends & family, etc.
Apparently Mariah isn’t the only one indulging her collection with a room of its own.
Are themed rooms acceptable in grown-up homes or best left to those less than a quarter century old?
What’s the craziest themed room you’ve ever seen?

Mariah needs to have a daughter. Then she can buy Hello Kitty stuff for her daughter, not herself. Wrinkles and Hello Kitty? That’s just wrong.

Come on, people! Where is your sense of humor? Who says that only children can enjoy the fun stuff out of life? You are only as old as you feel. Would you rather Mariah start collecting old rocking chairs or sweaters or something in anticipation of her golden years? Gimme a break!

I agree with Kittie. People can collect what they want. At least she is collecting objects and not actual children. There are grown men that still collect comic books, coins, toy cars, etc. By the way my new home office will be housing my extensive Betty Boo collection and do you think I care what anyone else thinks?

I agree with Kittie too. People can collect whatever they want. Ignore the “haters”. :-)

my neighbor loves spider man. one of the guest rooms is painted in blue, the curtains look like a red cap along with other decorations. i think it is fine! we seem to grow up and loose ourselves along the way.

Good for her. One of the cooler things about being an adult is that we end up earning enough money to indulge ourselves, especially if we don’t have kids to worry about. Better Kitty than drugs or booze or other dumb things singers get into.
A lot of people go through life never figuring out what makes them happy. They just slog on, day by day, assuming it will someday suddenly make sense and they’ll suddenly be happy, only they end up laying on their death bed when they realize it never happened because they never tried to figure it out. So Mariah has figured out Kitty makes her happy. Good for her. They make Kitty version of nearly any product you can imagine. She’ll be busy for years.
When you are sitting around the house feeling unhappy and depressed and down, think about what YOU could do to make yourself happy. Hint: mocking what other people do for fun is easy to do but it ain’t gonna make you solidly happy.

Why is it that people think grown-ups are weird for wanting to indulge their inner child? Nobody thinks its weird for sports fanatics to have a whole rool full of sports equipment and paraphanalia, yet if an adult likes something considered “childish”, its wrong? Why? My husband is a die-hard Falcons fan…he plans to have a full Falcons room, complete with pool table (which can be found on MFL.com ro JCPenney) when we finish our basement. As long as he leaves my Harry Potter collectibles along, I don’t care. If it makes me, him, or Mariah happy, who cares? At least she’s not spending all of that money on drugs or something else illegal.

My husband builds, collects and flys RC airplanes. Not the little itty bitty ones, the big ones with wing spans of 6 ft and more. He has one entire room in the basement dedicated to his hobby. It looks like freaking Hartsfield down there. But guess what, he aint at work he is home building or out flying his planes. you gotta love that!!!!

I would much rather look at her Hello Kitty room than have to listen to her horrible music.

I have a room in my house devoted to Tweety Bird and I’ve had a collection of Tweety stuffed animals way before my 5 year old Grand Daughter was born. I’m 45 now and don’t see a problem with it. I have a 39 year old Cousin who loves Sponge Bob —- what’s the big deal?

Oh I am glad you cleared that up ATL. I would hate to insult your sensetivities. My comment is that all of this is a load of crap.
