Ready for a Renovation?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In a completely informal and unscientific survey that amounts to speaking to friends, it seems that everyone is renovating their kitchen.
Even on AJC.com’s Fine Redesign, kitchen re-dos have topped the list of projects.
I actually like my kitchen. It’s the bathroom that drives me nuts.
The most annoying thing is that I saw homes with the kind of bathroom I wanted, so that was probably my biggest sacrifice in buying my current home.
The master bath is narrow, windowless and has little space to work with in terms of adding character.
My dream bath would have a European shower, freestanding soaking tub and a window, all of which could happen if I had the money for a renovation (except for the window part unless someone could rig up one of those tubular skylights).
Since we (I), am experiencing an economic crunch, all of this will have to wait. I admire those who’ve gone the DIY route to cut costs, but for me, that would be a complete disaster.
If money were no object, which room in your home would you love to renovate? How would you redesign it?

My kitchen! Granite countertops, tile backsplash, new cabinets, maybe replace the hardwood floors with Travertine. I have a stainless steel fridge, but I still need (want) the ss dishwasher and ss stove. Sigh. Maybe I’ll start playing the Lotto.

It’s not technically a room, but I’d redo the master closet. I think it’s about as efficient as it can get - the wire shelving, double racks, elfa drawers and shelves - but it could look so much smoother. I’d love to have that done - I just haven’t been able to justify it since I’m not sure I’d get any more usable space, it’s primarily cosmetic.

If money were no object, I’d gut the entire place and hire Candice Olsen. Love her show on HGTV. Her ideas are comfortable, practical but also elegant. If money were no object… dreamin now.

I would remove the awful wallpaper from all 4 bathrooms. (I know that’s not one room but it’s just one thing in each room.) Partner doesn’t see the need to remove “perfectly good wallpaper” even if it looks like something from the 80s.

I don’t think its called renovation, but I’d tear down the old out house and build a new one. Maybe even add a padded seat.

Without a doubt it would be my kitchen. I have no idea what I was thinking about when I bought that house because I have hated it from day one (I think I was just tired of house hunting). Size is the only thing I’m satisfied with. The layout is strange, not enough cabinet/counter space (is there ever?), outdated appliances, etc.
Sagegirl…Last week HGTV had a special of Candace Olsen’s top ten kitchens. I spent the whole episode saying OOOHH I want that one! No, that one! My husband said I sounded like a little kid who says Santa is going to bring him every toy in the Sear Wishbook! LOL I also love Spice My Kitchen though I think I could do my whole kitchen for what they spend on backsplash tiles!

I hate, hate, hate my bathroom.
When I bought my house, I made the mistake (or does it count as wisdom) of buy something I could afford on my budget. Unforunately, that meant a home with a small, singular bathroom that hadn’t been update in 20-30 years: avocado green, stainless steel tub and gray/avocado green tile on the floor and walls. There’s only so much you can do on your own with one bathroom and almost no budget: replace the sink, toilet, paint, new wallpaper.
With the cats and the dog, getting a motel for a week while a contractor has at it just isn’t practical. Still, one can dream………………..

My (old) master bath has a half bath on the other side of a wall. I would eliminate the wall and make 1 big bath with an added shower, My bathroom doesn’t have a shower, and, due to age, I am having a hard time getting in and out of the bathtub.

If money were no object, we would renovate the bathroom that Rosemary’s Mother uses to accomodate her limited mobility. We would love to have one of those walk in tubs with the seat and one of those toliets that raises a person up and down. Rosemary’s Mother is 85 years old and even with the some of our attempts to make a traditional bathroom accessible it does not always work. Thanks for letting us dream. RobertRosemary Strong

Without a doubt, the kitchen. Just renovated the bathroom (what a job; yeah, it’s small but it still was expensive). New cabs everywhere, re-use my old heart pine counter tops (I pulled the lumber from my own home in previous renovations), tile floor, rehab my 1950’s double oven to go with pilotless, get a 1950’s era (rehabbed) fridge, bar area for between the kitch and living room, and a permanent tap for a keg.
You know, your normal everyday sort of renovation.

If I had my choice (and maybe won the Powerball!) I would renovate my den. It still has the 1960’s wall paneling, although we had it painted orange (okay my idea - yeech!) The wall was damaged due to a blockage from the washing machine on the other side and it really needs to be refreshed.

If I had the money I would do a lot of different things in the house. First, I would remove the carpet throughout the house and put down wood floors. Then I would remove the sliding door between my family room and the very nice sunroom we have. I would tile the master bedroom (it’s on the small side with no tub, but it’s workable). I would also repaint all the rooms and remove any wall paper. I would also like to repaint the garage and repaint the garage floor. Some of the painting stuff can be done by me. But tiling and all that fancy stuff is way out of my alley.

Definitely my kitchen, I already have stainless steel appliances, but I would redo the floors with ceramic tile, backsplash, and granite countertops. I also would do something with my master closet, it’s kinda small but could be more functional with shelving. Oh and hardwood floors on main level.
