Room envy

As the home and garden writer here at the AJC I see a lot of beautiful rooms, and I do mean a Lot. I love touring people’s homes and seeing how they live, and feel constantly filled with inspiration that I bring home to my own abode.

For example, I was mesmerized by how designer Randall Cobb created drama in his master bedroom with wall-to-wall drapery and smart lighting.

I liked the sense of cozy coolness seen here in design maven Beth Webb’s showhouse in Lake Keowee, S.C.

Finally, how can someone see a wine cellar like photographer Denis Reggie’s and not wish they had their own glamorous vino room (and the cash to fill it with more than Boone’s Farm)?

Luckily, I love my house. It’s not huge by any means (about 1,900 square feet), but with its two bedrooms, dining and living areas, has all I need.

That said…I still imagine what room I would add if I could. I’ve already told you my plans to eventually convert the second bedroom into a guest/home office, but what would this other magical room be? Selfishly, a dressing room. And a family room would be a close second. (I want that TV out of my living area.)

If you could snap your fingers and add a niche room, what would it be? A wine cellar? Indoor pool? Outdoor kitchen?

If you’re ready for a redesign, check out these other amazing rooms:

Just one room? I’d love a home gym, a true home office, a media room, a play room with chalkboard painted walls…my ultimate would be a closet that looks more like a showroom. It would have space for all of my shoes, many shelves, a big chest of drawers in the middle, a comfy chaise lounge, a phone. I’d be like a retreat. Since, I’m dreaming…add that outdoor kitchen/cabana and indoor pool (with door slides that open it up during the summer).

Ok, first of all, you’ve got to get over your hatred of the tv in the living room. That’s where it’s supposed to go in middle class homes. Unless you live in a mansion and have the “ladies who lunch” over for tea, the main space in a house for a tv is the living room, often the largest room. If you hate the tv, just don’t turn it on. Put it in a cabinet or hide it behind curtains and ignore it. We, for one, love our tv and often have gatherings of friends over to watch movies and play video games. It’s this way at all of our friends’ homes too.

I would love to have a dressing room and a larger/better laid out master bathroom. I also wouldn’t mind a home gym. We already have a theater room (long room, rows of couches, 100+” screen, and a projector) downstairs, but I’d like to really make it nice with curtains and better furniture than the rejects that call it home. We’d also like to expand, cover, and screen-in our deck. My husband purchased the house several years before I was in the picture, so there are lots of little things I’d like to change.

I would love a library with wall to wall books. It would have dark cherry/burgandy leather sofa and high back chairs. A very large picture window to daydream about whatever book I was reading at the time. I see a large oriental rug under the furniture. Most importantly, there are books on custom made bookshelves with books from the top of the bookshelve to the bottom. I know this sounds simple, but I love to read….my dream room would be a library in my home.

A nice master bedroom with a good size (not huge) bathroom. We currently have a 1 1/2 Jack and Jill bathroom. They built them very small in the early ’60s.
