Home color - change with the seasons, trends or mood?

We see it in all the fashion mags — color trends. Purples, blues and greens (and most jewel tones) are in, and washed out subdued tones are long gone.

It’s easy to change with the fashion tides because for most of us, clothing is far cheaper than furniture and home accessories. Buying that new fuschia bag seems less of an investment (depending on the bag, of course) than switching out a comforter.

Still, I get the color switch itch when temperatures change. That’s why I try to buy large furniture in basic colors (white, cream or chocolate) and get my color fix with pillows and throws. I know some people who change their drapery seasonally, from linen in the spring to velvet in the fall. (Still, who wants to buy new velvet drapery each October when we learn our old cream velvets are out and navy is in?)

How do you keep up with color fashion in your home decor? Do you gravitate toward change when you see the latest “House Beautiful,” or keep your colors for years at a time?

And out of curiosity, how many of you fell prey to the French-inspired robin’s egg blue craze of the past few years? (OK, me too.)

Purple and Blue have been my primary colors in clothing and my home for years…in the bedrooms, bathroom and living room. I don’t change these…I do vary my colors in other rooms with accessories. Robin Egg Blue, Pumpkin, Cobalt, Forest Green are colors of some of my crock bowl collection used seasonally in the kitchen and family room.

Flowers and plants are used to accessorize other rooms and emphasize other colors when different accents are desired or needed.

I have always been a fan of warm, earthy colors. We just finished painting our interior common areas - the main area is Benjamin Moore’s Wilmington Tan; we painted an accent wall in our dining room in Spicy Nutmeg from Olympic, and our kitchen is Royal Red also from Olympic. We’ll probably re-do our master bedroom next and will likely paint it Wilmington Tan also. Our guest room is Revere Pewter from Benjamin Moore. And, our 3rd bedroom will likely get painted in the green family, most likely a historic color because we love them. They are timeless.

I refuse to have my home look like everyone elses’s on the block. I don’t do “trendy”. I do what I like, not what the neighbors want me to like.

I am an individual and will not do what everyone else is doing. I will express my own opinon, not some stupid designer’s.

I’m a huge fan of jewel tones, and have been for many years. I love dark cherry “Queen Ann” style furniture and the jewel tones just look so rich with it. I don’t care if it’s in style or not, it’s what I like. I prefer to keep the walls neutral (beige, taupe) and bring in color elsewhere. I moved into my husband’s house a few years ago and have been every so slowly replacing his boring white walls with nice neutral tones. Unfortunately, he and his mother decorated the house with wallpapers and borders everywhere, so it’ll take a good bit of time to redecorate.
