Doormat debate: classy or trashy?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A neighbor once commented that upon arriving home one day and exiting the elevator she immediately realized she was on the wrong floor thanks to “all those tacky doormats.”
I’d never given doormats a second thought, but when I had my own elevator mishap and exited on that floor, I admit, the first thing I noticed were the mats.
Some were quite nice. Others were those rubber things you might find at the entrance of the local gas station, which seemed a poor way to welcome someone into your home.
A cursory look around yielded some nice options such as these pictured. But I’d love to hear your thoughts.
What is your stance on doormats? Where have you found nice ones?

Wow, what an important, earth-changing topic. I’m so glad I accidentally happened upon this page because now I feel like a better person.

The ones pictured are hideous! I don’t have any doormats actually. No one seems to have a problem with it.

I guess I’m an awful person, because I found this topic very interesting. I guess it’s the HGTV fanatic in me (smile). I think a doormat is a must, but I do take time to select one. I’ve found great ones at Costco and Target.

Nedra, ignore the negativity. Not everything has to be “newsworthy” to be discussed. Some of us actually enjoy the blog you and Katie have put together. Habitude isn’t supposed to be about the news anyway!
We have doormats at all three entrances to our home. The one at the front door is multi-colored horizontal stripes with red being the main color. The one at the back has dogs all over it since we have 3 and they are in and out the back door all day. The one in the garage is an old, rubber welcome mat. Not the greatest thing to look at but it is utilitarian for our cat as her litter box is in the garage. We’ve found some nice ones at Home Depot and at Target. Two of our three are made of the same material as the ones you have pictured here. They are great for muddy paws and dirty shoes. The less debris that gets tracked into the house, the better!

Melissa Habitude isn’t supposed to be about the news anyway! That’s right, my friend. We have plenty of blogs about all kinds of topics. This one happens to be about home decor and design, which includes some news elements and simple design discussion. Other folks should click here to find something that suits them. =)

Gee…there must be some function automatically directing readers to Habitude against their will.
As most of our readers know, “important, earth-changing” topics are not a requisite for this or any blog…

Katie, I am glad you are enjoying the Persian rug. I do hope that the person that you bought it from informed you that the rug was made circa 1945-1955 and that the colors have been altered by a chemical washing process. The original colors were reds and blues. While virtually all handmade rugs have a light and dark end, many of the chemical color strips include reintroducing lanolin back into the wool so that the stripping does not completely destroy the yarn. This extra lanolin creates more sheen thus increasing the abruptness of the color change. However the integrity of the rug has been compromised and is not an investment. If fact, with regular vacuuming, it probably won’t last more than 10 years.

I hate when the doormat is old and the owner just leaves it there. Go buy a new one or toss out the old one. When the thing is curling up that is nasty. I have a door mat. Just black and tan. The ones that are in the shape of a flip flop are ugly. Stuff like that is just a novelty.

If you don’t have a doormat, then what do you wipe your feet on? I got one from Target that says, “wipe your paws” because I have 3 dirty dogs, not like they can read. They never wipe their paws!

Elevator?? Trying to dress up a condo with a fancy doormat is like putting a dress on a pig. Save your money and but a real “house”. When you get rich like me, your elevator won’t lead to a “floor” where you gander at other peoples’ doormats. Please…give me a break!

Just bought me a new doormat at walmart for 10 bucks. It’s black rubber with some sort of feaux ‘bronze’ looking ‘welcome’. It seems kind of cheap and I should have gotten a sturdier mat, but my prior straw type mat had gotten disgusting after 4 years.
At this point, I’m inclined to go with the heavy ‘rubber’ type mats that don’t absorb dirt or water.
Has anyone ever written a good book or thesis on doormats?

Uh, WHY is there a blog on DOORMATS? We have, as Americans reached a new low. C’mon, seriously.

funny thing about door mats whether I or you like them or not I prefer to see a dirty door mat as opposed to tracking the dirt into my home. Either way I have a formal one at the front door, “Got Beer?” at the garage door and not sure what the basement door mat is called, it’s made of wood with a straw scraper for the bottom of your shoe (like a golf shoe scrapper) so I don’t get grass clippings in the basement. So all my door mats are thought out - what a clever husband I have.
Personally, I welcome the Door mat blog it beats all the other negative stuff out there, I enjoyed it.
Thanks! Smile :-)

I found very nice mats for our new home at Frontgate.com. They are made of the same material as the ones above, but they have our family’s initial on them. I think a nice mat welcomes visitors and gives them a first impression of your home. The point of the article was not to create sarcasm, but to provide interested readers with options.

I think door mats are great! Especially if you can find one that reflects who you really are. Mine says “Oh s*%t, not you again.” I love it. :)

Mine says “What could you possibly want”? I love it. If you see me looking at you through the glass and I don’t answer the door that means go away do not keep ringing the bell.
