How to Lose a Sofa in 10 days
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In keeping with yesterday’s theme, here’s Keep, Spruce or Pitch, Part II
I’ve lived in every region of the country and at some point in move, I’ve had to shed furniture.
In Chicago and LA, getting rid of unwanted furniture was all about the yard sale…and when that failed, you called Goodwill, Salvi or some such, to come cart the stuff away.
In New York, my first moving sale involved hanging five signs on a college campus. About 2 hours later, the apartment was empty. For my second NY “sale,” I left a lamp and table on the curb and watched as two dudes stopped, examined and strolled off down the street with my discarded items.
Here in Atlanta, I need to lose a sofa, and I’m not sure of the best way to do it.
I don’t have a yard, so that kills the yard sale. Craigslist seems a popular choice or ajc.com classifieds. And yesterday, after visiting Finders Keepers, a furniture consignment store, I thought maybe I should give that a try.
How do you get rid of furniture that you no longer want, but that you consider too valuable for a curbside donation?

Join one of the local freecycle groups and post the ad there. Someone is bound to take it off your hands. At the same time you can find treasures in other folks discards.

To donate furniture (and to get a tax right off), log onto http://www.furniturebankatlanta.org/ and reps will pick it up for you or call United Way’s 211 (or www.unitedwayatlanta.org) and they will locate an nonprofit agency in your area that may need furniture. There’s absolutely no hassle either way, and your sofa will be used by someone who actually needs it.

Post a picture here - maybe one of the bloggers would like to take it off your hands???
We’ll be in the same position next Friday when our new furniture is delivered and have no plans for a garage sale. The couch we have would make a great kid pit couch!

There’s also the Atlanta Furniture Bank - http://www.furniturebankatlanta.org/. This non-profit helps families transitioning from homelessness to furnish their new dwellings with the basics. They will arrange for pickup, and will screen your items over the phone for appropriateness to their programs. Both times that we’ve called them to donate furniture, they’ve arrived within the planned window with a very efficient two-person crew.
