Flora for the Home
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
My thumb is so NOT green, it’s purple.
Having grown up in a house full of plants (my mother was the “talk to them and they will grow” type), I’ve concluded that it was my weekly chore of watering all those plants that drove me to the other side.
I now have four plants in my home and all except one were donated.
I’ve pretty much killed the orchid (that’s the poor thing on the right). The violets seem to be on the brink of death. And the lucky bamboo, fortunately, is a pretty sturdy plant.
But anyway, it all got me thinking…
Are plants really an important part of home decor?
Maybe I can just get rid of them all together. My particular mix of greenery certainly doesn’t seem to fit together well.
Where do you stand on plants as decor?
What kinds of plants do you have in your home?

I tried to have a plant when I lived in Florida. It died :( I have several arrangements of silk flowers in the house, and some silk greenery. I think it’s important to have some flora around the house - it sort of softens the decor. I have three plants in my office at work (two peace lillies and an ivy). They’re doing so well that I thought I’d try again with live plants at home. I got a jade plant, and about half of it died. I cut it back and the half that is still living is doing great. So maybe I’ll branch out and get one more plant for the house.

I used to have so many houseplants, it would take me an hour to water them all. Then along came my daughter, and that was the end of that. I do not have any plants in the house at this time.
However, I have plenty of flowers and plants on my two decks, and the patio downstairs……

I don’t think that plants are something that you have to have in a home, but as emjay said, they are nice to have…I don’t have any, I don’t have a green thumb..I’ve killed an aloe vera plant, a cactus & a jade plant…So, I just gave up…

I don’t have a green thumb either, but I do have a nice collection of “survivors”. I think they are essential only partly for decor, but mostly to clean the air. The air inside our homes has so many chemicals, and since few of us actually open our windows anymore, we need plants to help get rid of toxins in the air.

I do not have any plants in my home but would love to plant some outdoor flowers or maybe put some hanging baskets on my patio. (Maybe next year). I had a bamboo plant, they grow very easily & it added great decor to my kitchen window. I have silk sunflowers as the center piece on my dining room table.

Yes! Plants are a necessary part of interior decor. I have a lots of large palms that look great with my transitional furnishings. Plants and their homes (pots) are not cheap so don’t skimp!
If you want a plant that likes torture (low light, little water) and grows fast, try the ZZ plant (can’t recall the scientific name). Have recommended it to several friends and they have raved about it.

I love having plants in my home! Violets, jade, a peace lily, philodendron, a Christmas cactus, and ivy…to name a few! They are (tastefully) in every room in my house except two….a windowless bathroom and my parrot’s room.

I could do without them but my husband loves house plants and buys them all the time. They all promptly croak although we do seem to be having luck with the current crop, a snake plant (indestructible), several peace lilies and other low-light plants. I would love any recommendations for low-light plants that do well indoors.

Indoor plants are like pets and children—they need regular watering and occasional feeding, or they tend to turn brown and shrivel up. In other words—they can tie you down. I have a poinsettia I’ve been trying to kill since last Christmas, but it lingers to spite me.
Having said all that—I won’t say how many hundreds I’ve spent on outdoor shrubs, bulbs, annuals, perennials, and accessories, not to mention the man—wait this is ATL—is it “people” hours now? …I’ve put into it all. And most of which are flourishing thank you very much. Must be Sonny’s rain praying or fishing.

While I don’t have a green thumb either, I do have four plants, fig, peace lily, bamboo, and an “elephant ears” (not sure of the exact name). All of them were gifts, but are doing really well given the light and many windows I have in the great room.
Like emjay, I do think it softens the decor and like Ali I think it helps with cleaning the air, given off oxygen or something.
Wil, my indoor plants are my pets..seeing as though I can’t seem to commit to getting a dog..lol.

I really enjoy having plants in our home; however, with 3 dogs and 2 cats we have to be extremely aware of any plants that are toxic to them. We have succulents outside on either side of our front door and they are multiplying like crazy! I keep a plant in the master bathroom - just a small one (4 in. pot) and don’t really do anything to nurture it except for the occasional douse of water - thank goodness it’s hardy enough to hang in there!
Nedra, that orchid will come back. I had one a few years ago that I cut back after all the blooms fell off. It was dormant for a year, but the second year with a little help from African violet food, it came back and had no less than 15 blooms! It was absolutely gorgeous!!!
I’m no green thumb, so I pick plants that are very forgiving!!!!

Becky, you killed a cactus? I love that! That’s the first plant everyone says you can’t kill…
several of you mentioned peace lily’s…I have to investigate these.
Any thoughts on matching a plant with your decor? Should a traditional decor have certain plants vs. a more contemporary style decor?
