My worst painting mistake ever…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Maybe it’s because I had lived in thrilling New York for four years, but when I moved to Baltimore, Md. post-college, I was bored. I knew no one, I didn’t really care for the city, and my job was less than exciting. As a result (and because I’m a homebody), I dove into decorating my apartment like a soccer mom in a whites sale.
I needed to get my wild colors phase out of my system, so this apartment became my romper room. Cherry red was slapped on the living room walls, a mauvey, moody brown in the bedroom, and a happy yellow was applied in the guest bedroom.
Except it wasn’t so happy. In fact, it was downright shell-shocking, scary and garish. All I needed were some purple velvet drapes and Elvis memorabilia and it would scream: Viva Las Vegas!
(It looked not unlike this photo I found on some poor soul’s flickr account.
Perhaps all colors can be beautiful, but it’s about location, location, location. What was your worst paint mistake? Did you stick with it or fix the fiasco?
(For the record, my new home is painted in simple white tones: a creamy Benjamin Moore “Navajo White” and BM’s slightly silver “Wind’s Breath.”

I was looking to buy an intown loft several years ago. One came on the market in the building. The owner had painted the concrete ceiling solid black. It killed the sale of the unit right on the spot.

I was painting this swing set and dropped paint in my eye. Next I rubbed it and got it deep in my eye and I finally had to go to the hospital once it dried and have them flush it properly.

When I was three, a neighbor kid asked me to help him paint. We painted his fathers motorcycle a lovely mint green, the same color as their house. I got a good old fashioned spanking for that one.

We painted our bedroom a glossy, burgundy color. Too bad we didn’t know about tinted primers or do enough coats. It’s streaky and ruins the mood - don’t get me started on my GT husband trying to be a carpenter and putting up a chair rail. UGH.

I wish you could see the bathroom in our old house called “The Nervous Breakdown Bathroom”. I had one while trying to paint it. There was paint everywhere -it was a nightmare. I hate to paint anyway, and 4 plain walls are one thing, but the freaking bathroom was another all together! Good thing my husband can paint really well -that’s now his chore and his alone! One word of advice -never skimp on the paint tape. The blue stuff is worth it! Part of my nervous breakdown stemmed from cheap paper tape that fell down while I was painting and got into the paint and created a mess.

I love doing interior painting and gawdy colors are my favorite. I did a room in my old house in two-tone blue. I believe every room should be a different color. Gawdy’s just a state of mind.
