Bar stools built for comfort
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When I decided to become a journalist, I swore I wouldn’t become the cliched tortured writer, hanging out at neighborhood bars, drinking beer (read: apple martinis), and recounting my journalistic conquests.

So maybe that explains my aversion to having bar stools in my home (a stretch, but work with me).
When my parents came to visit my new home, it was the absence of bar stools that caught my mother’s attention.
“You need stools,” she said.
OK. Fine. I need stools. But while streamlined styles, such as saddle stools, appeal to my minimalist sensibilities, they do not look very comfortable. Stools that anyone would want to sit in for any period of time need to have backs.
So I spotted these, by Marco Maran for Knoll, www.allbarstools.com, but they feel too big and bulky. And anyway, with the $651 price tag, I could afford, ohhh…one.
Any thoughts on where to find streamlined bar stools built for comfort?

Hi Nedra, I posted yesterday but for some reason it never got through. I agree with you that a bar stool should have a back to it! West Elm has some nice bar stools that are not bulky at all AND they are stackable should you have the need to put them away. You should also look at Overstock.com.

I have never found any good deals on Overstock.com.
Is your dining area seperate from your kitchen? If not do the bar stools need to somewhat match your dining room table? My kitchen bar and dining room table are in the same room, if I decide to have bar stools will they need to match my table?

A blog about bar stools? With the Presidential election coming up in 5 months? Geez.

Hi KT, I guess I’ve gotten lucky on Overstock.
I think in the good ol’ days, everything had to match. These days I think people buy what they like. If it were me, I’d get something that compliments the dining room table without being overly matchy. Maybe the same color family, wood grain, or something like that. I really want to get the saffron colored bar stools at West Elm. What a great pop of color!

Hey Melissa! I agree; the saffron counter stools from West Elm are eye-catching, so much so that they appear out of stock, but I’ve had bad luck with that coating material. I bought the scoop back bar stools in white, and they were marred instantly by my friends blue jeans. (Those little buttons leave scars!)
If I want scratched-chic, I’d go for this Emeco counter stool, ($305) made of brushed aluminum. These puppies are virtually indestructible and look cooler with age.

Katie, thanks for the tip on the scoop back bar stools! Think I’ll definitely go with something else - the Emeco stools are cool - I’ve seen some of the aluminum chairs with backs on them too and those are very cool!!
