Stylish TV display? And how big is too big?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’ve finally accepted that I need the TV sitting in my living room. Sure, I love the serenity that comes with a room devoid of the giant black abyss of my LCD screen, but in reality, my Dad needs something to watch when he visits. And in reality, I like my reality television.
I made a mistake when I purchased my TV. I went to the store planning to buy a 26”, but when I saw that the 32” was “on sale” for the same price, I went for it. I recognize that a 32” TV doesn’t seem that large to most people, but in my view, it’s consuming my room, making itself the focal point when it should merely be an accessory.
How can I store this monster in a stylish, functional way? In a pinch last fall, I purchased a piece from West Elm, but $400 and three and a half hours of assembly later, the sideboard-turned-media stand was big, crooked and disappointing. (I’d show a picture, but it’s no longer available online. Go figure.)
How do you showcase (or store) your television? Do you have something like Pottery Barn’s “Dawes TV Armoire Suite” ($1,999)?
Or maybe this more understated Garraux Media Console from Ballard Designs ($900)?
Those seeking a sleeker, more contemporary look may opt for the Giulia Media Credenza from Design Within Reach ($4,000).
How do you find form And function when it comes to TV storage?

We’re also looking for the perfect TV cabinet for the TV and all of the components and game systems - I’d really like it to be behind closed doors rather than a feature in our family room! I did see something very interesting on Divine Design recently. The flat screen TV was mounted on a wall with a picture frame surround and a remote controlled retractable shade with a beautiful painting on it mounted inside the frame to cover the screen when not in use. What a perfect idea especially for a small space!

32” is not a monster by any stretch; it’s a bedroom TV. Reality check: many people are buying TVs 60” and up for their living rooms. It SHOULD be the focus of your living room. We got a very nice looking stand for our 55” TV from IKEA.

WAL-MART, baby. I simply cannot imagine spending $2000 for a TV cabinet at Pottery Barn. That’s about as smart as setting fire to my paychecks.
Seriously, when I do get a large TV, the stand will come from some place like Wal Mart or Ikea, and will be less than $200.

do what I did to save money.. you’re already spending a large sum for the tv anyway, go ahead and mount it to the wall… looks great.. i also built a nice entertainment table/stand that cost less than 30 bucks and it was rewarding since I built it by hand

Adam, A bedroom TV at 32”? Impressive, especially to a woman who doesn’t keep one in that space!
So this IKEA stand of yours - have you tried to move it? Are you worried about it’s ability to hold your 60” TV’s weight over time?

Katie,
Without even knowing what kind of 60” TV Adam has, I can tell you it weighs less than your 32” tube based TV. It really is amazing how much lighter the plasma and LCD TVs are now. I have a 42” on a wll stand in the bedroom and had no problem putting up there by myself. :-)

Pete - I have little pride when it comes to television, but I do have a flat screen that is “tube-free.” No big booty TV here!

Tv’s don’t go into the bedroom at all in the first place. (male blogger here…, yes male) The bedroom is designed for a selct few things and tv watching isn’t one. Get rid of the tv in the bedroom and watch your relationship get better. ….back to the subject…as a rule never pay more for the stand than you pay for the tv. Most electronic stores have several options that serve the purpose without draining your wallet. Katie, large tvs are becoming mainstream so don’t fret over the intrusion.

Store it in whatever you can afford that has doors so you can put it out of sight! There’s hardly any worse decorating mistake than hanging that TV over the fireplace! Oh, that is so dreadful!

I beg your pardon - tv’s don’t belong in the bedroom? My bedroom is 19x48 and we have 2 sofas, 2 coffee tables and a huge tv (unsure of size - i’m a female :) I took the tv out of our living room so we have no extra mess from the kids. They both watch tv in their room and hubby & I watch in ours (when we watch tv that is) You pay my 3k a month mortgage and you can tell me where to put my tv deal?

Your bedroom sounds more like a hallway at 48 feet long! I have to agree with others here about not having TV in the BR.

We replaced a “big booty” TV in our family room with a 55 inch plasma. The old TV took up a ton of room on a bookshelf/cabinet, but the new one is up on the wall above the fireplace and it looks great! I also love having a TV in the bedroom! My husband likes to stay up later than me watching TV and reading. He just turns the volume down and I am usually so exhausted, I have no trouble falling asleep. My snoring may drown out the TV ‘tho! I also enjoy watching the news and the Today show as I am getting ready for work in the mornings.

“uhh” sounds like a joy to live with.
Another blogger suggests that omitting TVs from the bedroom results in improved relationships. Sounded like good advice to me.
“Uhh’s” response was to take it personally and tout her “3k a month mortgage” as license to tell other people to stick it.
Further, she revealed that they don’t watch TV together as a family—making the kids watch TV in their room.
A vision is coming to me: you drive a big SUV while talking on your cell phone and changing lanes without signaling—all at the same time. And you wonder what all the honking is about.
I won’t help you get out of debt by paying your mortgage, but I can tell you where to put your TV. Deal?
Oh, and I bet you’re not a Southern Belle either. Good luck, hon.

Hang it on the wall, that’s what LCD TVs are for. Some double as picture frames, just put your memory stick full of pictures in the TV and viola.
Besides the stand, you need to protect the screen too. It cracks really really easy. Kids & dogs love to head butt TVs, and excitable friends like to toss video game controllers at it too. There are some “plastic films” that stick ontop for minor scratches, but I can’t find an affordable “hard shell” solution that doesn’t have glare issues. Thoughts ??

There’s nothing wrong with a tv in the bedroom. For some people like me, it’s almost a necessity. I need it to fall asleep! My husband just puts it on something boring and I pass right out. :)
PS. 32” LCD in the bedroom in a very nice armiore & 52” in the living room that’s about to be wall-mounted.

Dare I mention that my television screen is in the 20 something inch range and is about 6 inches too deep to be consider a flat screen. It’s so small, mainly because I rarely watch it, so I totally understand KL’s desire to not have the TV be the focal point of the room.
I recently saw a mag spread with the TV concealed behind curtains - blended right in with the rest of the windows. Creative, but could be hard to pull off depending on the room.
Has anyone seen other non-traditional solutions for hiding the intruding tube?

Katie, I found the frame with the screen that I mentioned above. It’s from Art Screen Masking Systems. What I like about this one is that you can get a customized screen. The price is way too high for what you get, but it is the concept that appeals to me. On the show, the TV was mounted above the fireplace with a beautiful water color print of horses.
If you want a furniture piece, you could always try the unfinished wood shops and get a piece at a significant savings and then finish it yourself.

put the flat screen on the wall. that is where it is suppose to go. flat screens were intended to hand on the wall like a picture frame. if you are going to put a flat screen on a stand, stick to old junk in the trunk tv and save yourself some money.

I have a 65” in the living room and a 60” in the bedroom. I rarely watch TV (except for the Braves), but when I do I want it to be as big and bright as possible. They both are new style rear projection, very thin but not plasma thin.
You can get get custom stands made to your specific dimensions a whole lot cheaper than buying one in the store.
Bedrooms are designed for TV’s. Large TV’s have been mainstream for a long time, at least im my family anyway.

Pier One has a beautiful TV cabinet that is perfect for a 32” LCD. It’s about 36” wide and 27” high or something and is dark “distressed” wood on cast iron legs so it’s at the right height. I have the same problem - bought a 32” LCD and I love watching it and I have buyers remorse at the same time because it seems so huge compared to my old 19” crt,
