Fashion designer furniture

As a follower of fashion, I’m always curious to see designers move from the world of fashion to fashioning furniture and home accessories.

It seems several of them have done so lately.

There is Oscar de la Renta Home and Gianni Versace furniture or even Marc Jacob’s collection of glassware and china for Waterford.

Here’s a look at an Oscar de la Renta red lacquer credenza (which feels a little flashy, but I kind of like it), listed at $10,785 and previously available in stores through Century Furniture.

But I always wonder if a fashion designer who ventures into home design is doing so primarily to boost his or her bottom-line and coast on his or her well-known name.

Can a fashion designer really be considered a high caliber designer of furniture or home accessories? Any examples?

Not exactly what you asked for but an example of a cross-over that is worth pondering…Vera Wang did very well designing china and crystal for Wedgwood as well as flatwear and even has a perfume line…but her casual clothing line and home linens, Simply Vera for Kohl’s, hasn’t done very well - in fact, all of the line is on sale right now (some accessories and jewelry are buy one get one free). I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that she’s more well-known for her spectacular wedding dresses and formal wear.

I like the lines of the chest from Oscar de la Renta; however, the hardware reminds me a little too much of a belt.

Large fashion houses like Oscar and Armani branch into the world of home decor and furnishings to increase the breadth of their brand. A recent A-list favorite, Monique Lhuillier has also gone down this path teaming up with Royal Doulton to produce a line of fine China. These empires of fashion are smart in their moves as it is yet another away their loyal fashionista set can be a part of that lifestyle as well as gives way for the everyday Joe and Jill’s that can’t afford a $15,000 evening gown to get a taste of that same style in the form a a $50 dollar dinner plate or a $500 lamp.

Vera Wang, as mentioned before, did a wonderful job in crossing over to perfume, and home decor. I think her home decor is every elegant and simple. A lot of women could find her deigns wonderful for their homes. Also she did a awesome job with marketing her perfume. I recently met her in New York city at a fashion seminar where she discussed her career and future plans. She expressed her passion in wanting to have a line for that everyday women could where, and that is where she came up with Simply Vera. Simply Vera can be found in kohl’s department stores. I don’t think it is doing as well as if could be , and the problem is it’s still a little too high. Her pants range from about $60 to $90, and her dresses are sometimes well over a hundred. I know that most people who shop at kohl’s usually spend less money on such items. However, I think it is great that designers try to widen their rang of products. I just think most of them should go to great efforts to maintain their high quality in anything they do.

Julia, that’s the first I heard about Monique Lhuillier. I guess it makes sense for wedding dress designers to branch into china and flatware (of course, that doesn’t explain Marc Jacobs and Waterford). So maybe the designer crossover works for small home items, but not a major piece of furniture?

I think it depends on what type of lifestyle you lead. If I am a woman (or man…dont want to discriminate :)) that loves Oscar de la Renta and can afford to buy his clothes than for that person it may make complete sense to buy a gorgeous $10,000 credenza that mirrors that person’s sense of style. Now if only I was that person who could afford that (a girl can dream, right)!!
