Leather Sofas: for bachelors only?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Once upon time I wanted a leather sofa. Then it hit me that every unmarried man I knew between the ages of 25 to 40 had one.
Sprawling espresso colored leather sectionals, most often wedged in a tiny space (along with surround sound speakers and a giant flat-screen), seemed a requisite of bachelorhood.
Now that I need to replace my own hulking ultrasuede sectional, I’ve been flirting with leather again and I’ve spotted some better options for the ladies.

One style that I love is from Elite Leather, the California based company that turns out made to order couches. Sadly, I can’t rip the image from their website so click here to see the “Louis” sofa which goes for $5,000.
I also like these refinished and re-upholstered 1960s tufted case chairs from Noho Modern (also Cali based). But the $8,300 price tag puts them well out of range.
Should I leave the leather to the fellas or has anyone spotted other styles a lady might love?

If I may add - I’m convinced the standard living room for a 20 or 30-something bachelor is a brown or black leather sectional, a red “Oriental” rug, and a giant television. Is it just me?

I don’t think that is the case if the guy is a metro-sexual. Otherwise, I think you are dead-on. It’s a shame too because once they meet their mate they are going to be so disappointed when that stuff has to GO!

Thanks Melissa…I like.
Saw these chairs on Drexel Heritage which I imagine (hope) are somewhat more affordable than the Noho ones…

I don’t think it’s just for men. I have 2 young kids and the next sofa will be leather because they clean easy. This site has some nice ones http://www.ekornes.com/us/ekornescollection/ I don’t know the price range.

I like leather too! Deep red…mmmm. Definitely not just for men. Do something mod and recover an antique upholstered piece in a cool leather color like butternut. It’s not only easy to clean , but long lasting. Might not be good if you have cats or chewing dogs!

I am a 53 yrs old widow and I’ve had leather in my living room for 5 years now. I love the smell of it and no, its a people thing, not a man thang.

I like the chair, Nedra! I really like the idea of the tufted back - such a beautiful, classic look. Many of the more modern lines have very low backs that are extremely uncomfortable for my 6’3” husband! Not to mention the fact that we need a couch long enough for him to lie down comfortably. Makes finding the perfect piece a bit of a challenge!! Not to mention our 2 Weimaraners, 1 Vizsla, and 2 cats! HAHA!
