Floor coverings: Spend high for ground-level luxury?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
My floors are naked and crying for cover.
While I’m not a huge fan of blanketing hard woods, I adore beautiful rugs. In my view, they serve three purposes: 1) to cover scuffs and scrapes, 2) prevent further damage, and 3) tie a room together.
Despite my wallet versus taste challenges, I’m a regular on abchome.com, where I soak in views of trés-expensive rugs like this 9’8” x 10’6” taupey Samarkand, now on sale for $24,999, down from $38,000.
Yes, a true Persian or Oriental may sell for more than some college tuitions, but I know a number of people who have passed these heirlooms from generation to generation. (Alas, I am not among them.)
Through this site, I came across Madeline Weinrib, the great-granddaughter of ABC carpet founder Max Weinrib. Her colorful woven works range in price from the hundreds to thousands. As a fan of all things pink, I noticed this cotton weave Emma brown and pink rug at $775 for a 6 x 9.
Feeling indulgent? What do you think of this moody Tibetan Light Honeymilk rug? This piece sells for $4,000 at 6 x 9; both Madeline Weinrib price quotes are from Bungalow Classic on Howell Mill.
How important are floor coverings in your home? What’s the most you would spend on a rug, and how long do you expect to keep it?

Katie, Are you really going to spend that kind of bread on a rug? First the $9000 table, now a $38,000 rug. You can take a trip to the middle east buy rugs for the whole for a fraction of the price. How are going to fell when the dog does his business are your investment? We had some fine floor coverings at one time, I am talking thousands, they got messed up and we had to throw them away. Go down to TJ Maxx and pick out some of the Belgian rugs, they look great and cost two hundred bucks. Save your money!

I wish I had that kind of money to burn. Even if I was rich though, I wouldn’t spend that kind of money on a rug.

Crawdaddy, As a reporter, I live for discount stores like TJ Maxx and HomeGoods, as well as clearance sales. The rugs (and tables) I’ve owned came with a few less zeros than the ABC variety. I’m merely spending a few minutes in fantasy land when I view the luxe versions.
Where else do you go for discount design? And if not a dream table or rugs, on what do you splurge?
Do share your tips!

Go to Scott’s antique market and estate sales. I got a rolex at an estate sale a few years back for five bucks. Yes it is real! I splurge on musical equipment , stereo equipment, and records. I can sell that stuff for what I paid or more. Katie, I think your doing a great job!

Katie Leslie - why don’t you write about REAL topics. Stop discussing $10,000 tables and $38,000 rugs. You know you’re not going to buy them and you also know we’re not.
So write about REAL items that you as well as us can actually think about buying.

2 words - Craig’s list
I know, I know it’s really one word, but for emphasis sake, grant me this one please!?!?!?!
I’m with Crawdaddy, there are so many better things out there in the world to spend money doing, or to spend money on.
How amazing would it be to give the $38,000 for the rug to a person who otherwise couldn’t got to college, or to help a battered wife get back on her feet, or to research a clean water project somewhere in the world and help build a well there.
I just can’t imagine spending that kind of money on THINGS!

Rod - I like your passion!
You are right - of course most of us won’t buy a $38,000 rug, but I’m continually amazed at what is out there in the universe of luxury design. As for me, I’m more inclined to “splurge” on things like the pink and brown piece for $775.
Historically, I pounce on clearance sales like a tiger in the wild; places like the aforementinoed discount stores and Ballard Designs can have good deals if you wait for them. (In fact, just toured its Defoor Avenue studio yesterday.)
But as you’re on a blog about home dcor, perhaps you have tips to share? Where do you find your deals? Have you had luck like crawdaddy at Scott Antique Market or like Beck with craigslist?

Rod - stop acting like one. This blog’s fun. Plenty of “real” news - politics, crime, education (sometimes all in one story, i.e. Clayton County school board) to be found elsewhere.
