Holiday Diet Secrets
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
How does SHE do it? Or HE? Some say they avoid over-grazing at Holiday parties by eating a salad before they go. Others say “It’s easy! Just make sure to exercise a bit more during the holiday party season.” Still others have little secrets which may be hard to spot. One woman told me she makes sure to take a clutch purse to parties, so that she only has one hand left to hold a drink OR have a bite to eat. Not both at once! Dietitians warn against grazing on small bites of this and that over the length of a party because it can add up to way more than a meal. So, make a plate with the appetizers presented and sit down to eat sensible portions. Then get back to the party and socialize! What are your secrets for off setting increased temptations of fabulous foods during the Holiday?

eat at home. don’t drink while the food is out or you WILL eat. wait until everything gets cold and gross and then have a drink. and if you’re going to family’s house for a meal, they should understand if you don’t want a heaping portion of everything. you have to exhibit some self control or you shouldn’t even bother trying. my name makes me hungry.

Brush and floss before you go. Or take along a tothbrush and brush in the bathroom after you’ve met your predetermined limit of party food. It gets the taste of party food out of your mouth and is a sensory reminder not to start over at the snack table.

I will tell you what not to do…dine w/my parents or children….if I even looked at something over the holidays I heard “I thought you were dieting” or “You can’t eat that your dieting” or “Did you blow your diet?”
First, I am not dieting….I am using Weight Watchers to retrain myself on how I view food. Second, on the points system no food is a ‘can’t’. Third as long as I stay in my points (and I have been very good about not using ‘weekly’ points except on Thanksgiving Day and sticking to just the ‘daily’ points)then no I am not blowing my ‘diet’…
Couldn’t they just educate themselves instead?
