Fountain of Youth Foods?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Foods such as blueberries, salmon, flax seed and yogurt have made it into the category called “superfoods” because they boost health and fight disease with their high concentration of a certain nutrient or are great one stop shopping for a number of nutrients.
Now there’s new emphasis on foods that might promote healthy aging and even defy the ravages of time on our skin, bones, eyes, minds and energy levels. Do you think that what you choose to eat can either speed up or slow down the aging process??

One that few people know about is Kefir. This is a wonder food which has more probiotics than yogurt and just adding this alone to my diet has helped me with stomach and digestive problems as well as lose weight.

I know that this might be a little off subject. Healthy eating is great! But what do you do when you get all serious about eating healthy, and you are soooo excited to start doing it, and you go to the store, and stock up on all kinds of good for you things, and maybe 2 days afterwards, you find that all that healthy, good stuff is starting to go BAD? As a mom of three growing children I found that when I would buy produce before we could consume it the produce would go bad. That doesn’t surprise me seeing as how everything goes bad before you can eat it nowadays. Even if I would juice the produce it did not taste as fresh as the day I brought it home. I researched the reason and found that there is device that works in your refrigerator that will help prolong the shelf life of organic produce plus it kills bacteria. It is the best thing I have ever owned and I think everyone should own one. I found it at www.orderminimate.com. It’s called the Mini Mate. I have had mine for over 60 days and it has already saved me $20.00 which is a fraction of what I paid for it. Has anyone else ever used this before?

If you didn’t buy “fresh” produce that came from 1000’s of miles away, then it wouldn’t go bad so quick. Try buying some local produce that comes from GA instead of CA. I found that fruit stays better when it is left out of the fridge also.

Thanks, Carly, for the suggestion. I know what you mean as far as having to buy fresh produce often or it goes bad, and of course as it sits it loses nutrition as well. I sometimes buy plain frozen berries for this reason. It’s hard to really know what’s healthier, buying fresh or buying frozen. I have researched it all. I do try to eat what they say as far as antioxidants. I’m currently loving summer fruit because it’s an antioxidant feast: melon, berries, etc. I will occasionally buy a bottle of pomegranite or acai juice. And I try to get lots of broccoli, etc. I also like kefir altho it’s hard to understand why some organic brands put in high fructose corn syrup. It truly is delicious and a great deal nutritionally, with probiotics as well as much more protein than regular yogurt or milk, and plenty of natural calcium. Instead of eating fish I take fish oil daily and have started getting the kind that’s processed in a way to get rid of most of the mercury - can’t remember the name of the process, but it’s healthier (something molecular). I’m realistic enough to realize eating this way will not insulate me against all disease or aging, but at least I do my part as much as possible. I’m reasonably healthy and I look great. I keep my minor issues of blood pressure and cholesterol controlled with diet and exercise and to keep from going on meds.

California fruits and veggies taste better. Period. Strawberries and carrots especially!

You’re joking, right, CalGal? You cannot seriously believe that fruit from California tastes better. Strawberries from Cali are bland and tasteless, whereas locally grown berries are sweet, juicy and flavorful.
Tomatoes are another locally grown item that tastes better.
Jess is absolutely correct in pointing out that locally grown items are better tasting and better for you. They’re also better for your state and local economies.

I think it depends … altho right now CA peaches look beautiful, I think eastern peaches are sweeter and juicier, but I must admit the recent CA strawberries are to die for whereas Driscoll strawberries from FL are tasteless. Has anyone seen local GA strawberries? If so, tell me where to get them.

Kifer cheese is delicious on middle eastern foods, rice, baked potatoes and the like. Plan to make fresh veggies the focus of the meal. If I buy eggplant, my rule is to use it in two days. My family and I are very healthy and love good food. No chips, cookies or candy are ever bought because we enjoy fresh fruit. The one exception is chocolate, for medicinal reason only, and squash isn’t a substuited for really good chocolate.
