High fat or wrong fat?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
More people seem to care about the kind of fats their eating, not just how much.
A Food and Health survey conducted by The International Food Information Council (IFIC) found that 72% of Americans say that they are concerned with both the amount and the type of fat they are consume, compared to 66 % last year. So, do you reach for olive oil and avocado instead of butter and cheese?
Do you feel like there’s more attention in the news and talk in medical circles about identifying “good fats” and “bad fats” instead of just crying out for less fat?

I’m much more concerned about the fat in the Clayton county budget than I am the fat in my food. I can reduce the fat in my diet, but how do you reduce the fat in a governments budget. Now two of the commissioners want to put an unattentive, lost political “hack” in to run the show. And I don’t think we’ve seen nothing yet!!

Too much fat from any source is bad. However, fat is essential to any diet. If you have to choose a fat, skip the fried chicked and go with something like peanuts, shrimp, olive oil, or leaner meats. When it comes to butter spreads, while real butter contains more fat and cholesterol, leave the artificial stuff like margarine alone. Avoid anything with “partially Hydrogenated” on it because over time, these can do more harm to arteries than the real stuff. Choose your fats carefully, but don’t be under this illusion that all fat is bad-it isn’t and in order for your body to function properly you need it!

I know all fats have approx the same cals which is LOTS, which explains my recent behavior as a dinner guest. I was keeping my host company in the kitchen during cooking and was looking forward to eating the lovely chicken and pasta dish made with a roasted red pepper pesto, delicious pan-grilled chicken and veggies. Just b4 serving this beautiful dish, my host picked up a huge bottle of olive oil, turned it upside down and poured what looked like about half the bottle on my dinner! Yes I know olive oil’s good for you - but everything in moderation please! I was not about to consume hundreds of extra fat cals so I ate very sparingly, thereby ruining the enjoyment for me and perhaps making my host wonder if I disliked her cooking.
On another note, I have recently discovered my spread of choice, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, has some trans fat so will probably switch brands. But then again, I use it in moderation so maybe not. I have brought down my total cholesterol levels by consuming more good fats including nuts, Smart Balance (or whatever the name is of that Omega-3 peanut butter)and foods that have added plant sterols like Take Control Lite spread. Plus there’s a supplement called Cholest-Off which has plant sterols and is clinically tested.

m,
Thanks for your psychological analysis. Statements like those are made for people JUST like you.
Seek esteem, then you won’t be affected.

I bought my father a biscuit at Hardee’s. I love him very much. He loved his biscuit and asked if it was homemade. I told him, “no,” that I had bought it at Hardee’s. He said, “Oooooh! They make good biscuits!”
I know he likes biscuits from Hardee’s, so I figured I would get him one on his special day. We sat at the table in silence, enjoying the moment as he used his good hand to feed himself. Hardee’s biscuits are kind of oily, so I also got him a napkin from Hardee’s.
I wish Father’s Day could happen more than just one day a year. I know I would make Hardee’s alot of money if it were that way. So long as my Dad likes their biscuits, I suppose.

I am always amazed at how honest everyone is on this blog. Some heartfelt, some angry, some funny, some serious, some silly, some all of the above. Food is an emotional issue and it’s something we all have control over- at least more than other things in our lives. Thank you for joining the Healthy Eating blog. I’m learning a lot from all of you. Ok maybe not the one about the Clayton County budget. (:
