Skinny male models?

Just thought I’d keep the discussion on body image and body size going with a new question. Do we ever see male models who are too skinny? No, the ideal body for males is muscular and “just right”. If they were skinny they’d appear “sickly” and “weak.” Of course, there’s a lot of pressures on male models to avoid gaining unwanted extra weight and infact, there is more attention being paid to male eating disorders now, too. What is your ideal for how much a males should weigh or appear to weigh?

if you look like you try too hard, it looks feminine. That is why people think that men who have that look appear to be “gay”. As long as you dont have a spare tire, you dont necessarily need a six pack

Carolyn - I have to disagree with you. There are plenty of “skinny” male models. It depends on the demographic of the advertiser. Remember that guy from the Gap commercials…very thin. Flip through an issue of GQ or any of the other male “fashion” magazines and you’ll see lots of thin male models.

Granted many publications today focus on well muscled (pubescent at best) males: Abercrombie and Fitch and any number of fitness magazines…but the thin male model is very much in vogue right now.

It’s the 21st century. Muscles are no longer indicative of a man’s prowess. Think about the guys at the top of the food chain: i-bankers, traders, CEO’s, corporate lawyers. Brain power and money rule the industrialized world (and the women in it). There’s nothing wrong with exercising, but if you have four or five hours a day to devote to weighlifting, you’re probably not making any rain.

Men shoudl look healthy. So, within 20 pounds of an ideal wieght would be optimal.

All male models have extremely low body fat, and that’s the issue. Low body fat is a natural condition for most males but not so for women. The difference in bulk is do to muscle mass and women don’t carry anywhere near the same amount of muscle mass as some of the more husky models. Having said that I have to agree with JT in that there are plenty of skinny male models, just look at Ashton Kutcher. Many men feel that the female models who carry such low levels of body fat that they rival males are not very sexually attractive. It is my feeling that because the fashion industry is heavily influenced by women and homosexual men, they prefer androgynous women but have no problem with husky powerfully built men. I don’t think the hederosexual appeal of female models plays any role in the modern world of fashion.

I have never liked the skinny look on either male or female. It looks sickly. I think people that are active and care about their body are most attractive.

Go to any gym these days and the guys getting all the attention from the females are the ones packing on muscles with the weights, not the skinny guys in aerobics or spin class. Women (for the most part)like the muscle and they like a good bit of it on their guy.

I don’t know…it depends on the guy. Some guys are attractive when they’re cuddly-looking, some when they’re lean, some when they’re stocky, some when they’re skinny like rock stars.

I tend towards shorter, stocky, muscular men because I am built the same way. I don’t feel girly around men who are smaller than me.

But I know plenty of girls who don’t have this self-esteem issue.

I know that, comfort and cuddle-wise, that I DO NOT prefer tall men. 5’9” is the perfect height for me. I’m 5’4”. A man who is 5’9” +/- an inch is the perfect height for me to snuggle my face into his neck. I had a boyfriend who was 6’4” once and found many romantic situations awkward. Though I imagine anyone would get used to whoever they loved.

Eventually, I married a 5’9” 200lb guy. He’s stocky, but no love handles though not ripped, either. Just big shoulders, arms, chest, and legs. The legs are my favorite. I’m a leg girl!

That being said, I used to work with a guy who was very tall and gave the appearance of being very thin because he had bony shoulder and arms and a thin chest. It didn’t help that he slouched over to form a big C. However, he had very large and muscular legs. And he was cute, anyway, especially after you got to know him better.

Any body type that take an inordinate amount of time, energy, focus and money to maintain is ridiculous. I like men who are more into ME than their bodies, buff, pudgy or slim.

I see real life men as well as male models who look overly muscled. It’s not attractive. I also see men who are painfully thin—natural or not. Either way, the body type must fit the frame, height and look normal in order to be attractive to me.

By muscular arms...mmm..

Never really thought about it. Not sure I have a preference. But I definitely like chest hair and head hair. As long as a guy doesn’t have a huge pot belly, skinny arms and is slouched over. I’m partial to defined arms even for myself and I work out to achieve it. I guess my favorite is my sweet hubby who is a bit stocky but all muscle. He works out very hard.

You don’t have to necessarily jacked-up, but it’s good for us men to have some muscle-mass. I think Scott is referring to either the pencil-neck “model” look or perhaps the fruity “metrosexual” look…which is nothing more than a straight dude trying to appear like a homo. Men indeed need to carry themselves as such!

What male models are you talking about? Models for consumer products? Models for TV ads? The ‘skinny model issue’ for women is in high-fashion. Compare that with male high-fashion models and you will find that the look is comparable. On any of the men’s fashion runways, thin is in. http://men.style.com/fashion/collections/F2007MEN/runwayshows. They’re all underage and thin. But notice that there’s less of a public outcry. Why? Because young men don’t evaluate their worth by comparing themselves to these models. Neither should young women compare themselves to the models. The problem isn’t with thin high-fashion models. The issue is the role models and characteristics that young women are chosing as the basis of their self-evaluatations and self-worth.

Brian - It’s your money honey!!!! No matter what you look like, if you’ve got money and alot of it, the women will flock. Just don’t let my ex-sister-in-law find you. You will be filing bankruptcy in less than 6 months. That woman can spend money like nobody’s business. $30K or more in credit card debt in less than 3 months (hard to believe I know, but she did it, not once, but THREE times for a grand total of over 100K in less than two years. Gee, I wonder why my brother divorced her??????

Sorry, I went off topic.

The fact is that there is presure on male models to be skinny just like the females. After all they are walking down the same catwalk on the same night. A recent report showed that male models were being asked to lower thier BMI to 16 the average healthy male is around 18. The Heroine chic look of the early ninties focused more on anorexic lithe males than it ever did on females save the one exception Kate Moss. The difference is that in the male model category are fitness models whose job is to be very muscular and buff in order to sell workout equiptment or suppliments. But this is a special category. High fashion models are all selected to have the look of a young boy of 16 or 17 whose body often is not yet muscularly developed. If we are talking health young men are encouraged to maintain 10% body fat (different from BMI)in point of fact an athelete at peak training before an event can sustain 8% but not for long without doing damage. 12% is lean and defined and very buff. the average body fat of a healthy male is around 15%.If male body image were not a problem the suppliment industry would not be so profitable and would not be a billion dollar business. go into any GMC store and you will see that virtually all thier clientele are yong men. The fastest growing segment of plastic surgery is for men. REsearch also indicates that male body image plays a major role in hiring and salery structures for professional men.

I totally agree Thrash, I love men with muscles. Skinny men just aren’t attractive to me. I never knew that there was pressure on male models to be skinny, I thought the more muscle the better. That’s what I like to see when I look at a man in a magazine. A nice looking man with well defined muscles.
