It’s What’s Not There that Counts
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
According to the Mintel Global New Products Database over 100,000 new food and drink products were launched in 2006. What’s ahead for this year? Turns out products falling into the “food minus” category are on their way up. Those are products that promise less fat, calories, sugar and cholesterol. So it’s what’s NOT in a food that counts with those products sharply on the rise. The biggest winners in products that have lost offending ingredients are trans fat free products and gluten free products. What don’t you want in the foods you buy? And do these product pitches work for you??

By watching what I eat

I buy fresh sausage to avoid nitrites. I try to look for lower sodium in foods, and I try to watch the high fructose corn syrup. A friend swears his beloved Oreos are not as good minus the trans fats - he says if a person doesn’t like trans fat products they shouldn’t buy them but don’t put pressure on the company to change the product just for the few. There are plenty of alternative brands at the health food store. I try to look for lower sugar and fat but not necesarily sugar- and fat-free. I’m enjoying some of the newer foods that have healthy additives - like breakfast cereals with added fiber and protein.
