Are you drinking your calories?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
That fruity drink with rum sounds great after a long day at work but do you know how many calories it has? What about that bowl of snack mix? It’s easy to get carried away while winding down. Would worrying about calories kill your relaxation buzz?

NOT A COMMENT, BUT A QUESTION!!
What happened to the HAPPY HOUR article?! What is the best alcohol drink to have if you’re watching your weight?

As I stated on another blog, I just lost a lot of weight. The ONE thing I REFUSE to give up is wine. I’m a wino! Not a wine-snob, just a wino! I have a few glasses a night and love the pleasant little buzz it gives me. When I’m sipping my wine and cooking dinner, that’s when I’m relaxing. Something about the two together just make me unwind, I’m weird, I know. Red wine is not only good for your heart, blood cholesterol, and mind; it’s not too high in calories. I’m living proof that a glass or two of wine at night will NOT bust up your diet. I’d stay away from most all cocktails though. They’re very high in calories and you have to drink two or three to get the “proper” effect.

I do not go out often but when I do I like those fruity, non-alcohol tasting drinks which are always laced with calories and fat. My newest find is one called the Nutty Irishman. It contains Frangelica (sic) and Baileys. They cost around $7-$7.75 each, though, so that is a large drawback. But when you only drink a couple of times a year it’s not that bad.
Wine, I have also come to like wine more than I used to but I prefer the white wines to the reds. The reds leave my tongue stuck on the roof of my mouth lol

Jennifer - you just ain’t drinking the reds right! HA! I know what you mean about the stuck tongue thing…happens to me alot! I preferred the whites too until I tried a red rose. It’s like wine-lite. I was drinking cabernet and shiraz and had lots of stuck tongue problems. The rose doesn’t cause that quite as much. I like the reds b/c of the health values too. Whites don’t have as much of the healthy stuff. Plus I can get a drier rose than a zin. I like the wine so dry it’ll crack! Stay away from sweet wines! Hangover city on just one glass!!

Thank you for raising that question. We will run the happy hour article in Monday’s Healthy Eating blog. Don’t forget to come back.

I love wine and beer. But when I’m trying to cut calories but still enjoy a drink with co-workers, I go with vodka with club soda and a squeeze of lime. You don’t have all the calories and sodium that tonic has and the squeeze of lime adds some fruitiness to the drink.
