A suggestion for the Hawks
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here is a suggestion for whoever winds up running the Atlanta Hawks: Fire Woodson, hire Memphis coach John Calipari.
Do you think his dribble drive offense, as written about on ajc.com, would work in the pro game?
I know that playing East Carolina and Marshall is a lot different than playing Boston and Detroit, but heck , we gotta do something.
Thoughts?

I have read some bag blogs in my day, but this takes the cake. Please leave it to Sekou and the few pros at the paper to cover the Hawks.

In terms of leadership, something defintely needs changing. I believe we have the physical tools to actually do something, but I’m not sure Calipari is the answer. I’m a Falcons season ticket holder and have seen ENOUGH of the college approach to changing our “pro” team’s fortunes. We need a pro-level “teacher” for these guys. A “Larry Brown” type, not necessarily THE Larry Brown because he is about as loyal as a doberman in heat, but a coach that’s willing to teach and be here too for a awhile. It doesn’t stop there. I believe some changes in “upper” management all the way up to the Atlanta Spirit needs to change before this franchise can truly take off. How are we as fans are suppose to believe the focus for this franchise is on winnning a championship when we hear the owners are suing each other and the media leaks out stories of infighting where the GM has tried to fire the coach on three occasions but the owners would not allow it? That whole atmosphere is ridiculous and I believe the fans here in Atlanta are being served in injustice. And people want to call us fairweather? Look at what we deal with. Blowing TWO 20 pt leads in the same game to the 28 and whatever Bulls? Inconsistent 2nd half play, no adjustments at halftime, bickering amongst the players with the coach? Something upstairs needs to change and its NOT just the coach. Greg Popovich couldn’t win with the way this team is ran from upstairs. He could make them better than Woodson has them playing now, but somehow I see the GM and ownership holding this team back more. They ALL need to go in my opinion or drastically change their image and the way they approach their biz before we as fans really believe. We can “hope”, but “believing” takes more than what they are doing right now.
GO HAWKS!!

John Calipari did not use the “dribble drive” in New Jersey. In fact, I believe the article in SI indicated this is the first or second year he has used the offense.

Help me out here….what is so great about the dribble drive offense? Seems like forms of this offense have been around for years. Why is it getting so much attention now?
I think this offense could work in the NBA, but it could not be the only offense run. It would have to be mixed in with other sets.

It’s sad, really. Everyone calling for the AJC to fire me.
Thanks to JohnD for pointing out that the Memphis coach DID NOT USE this offense when coached the NJ Nets. I guess the rest of you failed to read that.
Also thanks to Ronald and Dan for posting intelligent remarks.

We would post intelligent marks, if you actually wrote an intelligent blog.
What a waste of AJC’s payroll.

Hire Calipari? What is this guy talking about? We need a proven NBA coach with an uptempo offensive game plan to come in and give this team some direction.

HAWKSHACK:
I see your sensativity by your response to the few postings here. Might I suggest that you adapt your style more toward David O’Brien’s and show up with comments regularly, not just when it suits you. When the denizens realize their fearless leader is plugged in than a discourse can be established with those making good comments and these will gradually drown out the nay-sayers.

The success of Memphis State’s offense has a lot more to do with the athletes who are on the floor than anything else. They are a very difficult team to match up with on the college level.
As far as Calipari coming here, can anyone say “Lon Krueger”. Maybe we also need to move a player who is a class act for a player with attitude……….
As Yogi says: “Deja vous, all over again.”
