What happened in the second half?

As the Hawks battle for a playoff spot, one of the teams they needed to beat to keep out of the race was the New Jersey Nets.

They couldn’t do it.

The Nets now lead the Hawks by a half game for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East.

In case you missed it, the Hawks had 70 points at halftime. Things were looking good when the Hawks went into the locker room. The problems started when they came out.

The Nets were waiting for them. The Hawks looked flat in the third period. It ended up with the Nets outscoring the Hawks 65-47 in the second half to notch the victory.

I guess the old saying is true. You know…the one about “wanting it more.”

I guess the Nets wanted it more.

The Hawks couldn’t guard Carter, Jefferson, and Harris. That’s what happened in the second half. That trio combined for 98 of the Nets’ 125 points. The perimeter defense was FUBAR as usual tonight.

What happend on the 2nd half? Woody happend. I mean are we really surprised that this team came out flat in the 3rd?? Geez when will this guy wake up and make adjustments like MOST other coaches in the NBA.

As looked at the minutes of the Hawks starters I could understand what happened in the second half. The inability of coach Woodson to trust his bench again reared it’s head. The starters legs were gone and that’s why their shots were not falling and there was so little defense. There are guys on the Hawks bench that can really shoot the ball but coach is not smart enough to figure out how to use them throughout the game so that your starters will be fresh in crunch time.Even when they play well in a game ,I notice that in the next two games there is a DNP by their names. Why not put Mario on Vince to see if he can at least stay slow him down instead of wearing out Joe and getting him in foul trouble. If I were a Hawk player, I would have a hard time believing in a coach that continues to try to put a square peg into a round hole. The talent on this team continues to be under utilized to their own demise. This is the number one reason they will not make the playoffs this year.

I agree with you 100% ken. Woody does not know how to utilize his bench. It’s the same story everytime the Hawks play. They get your hopes up high in the first half, even though you are excited about the first half, you know what’s going to happen the second half.

I agree with both of you guys, but a part of being a coach is also knowing what you guys CAN and CANNOT do!

  1. As a coach you need to pull Josh Smith aside and tell him that he is NOT a PG. How many turnovers does this guy have????

  2. Tell guys to stop coming down the court and jacking 18 foot BRICKS!

  3. USE THAT ENERGY OFF THE BENCH!!! Its no secret and any NBA team that has won will tell you that you have to have a bench.

Even Charles Barkley said earlier this season, that he would be dissappointed if this team didnt make it to the playoffs. And after watching them play, this team is too talented now with the addition of Mike Bibby to be 11 games under 500!

I think Dennis Felton would do a better job with the Hawks than Mike Woodson. So if UGA wants to get rid of him, I would gladly trade Mike Woodson for Dennis Felton.

I agree with most of you guys,We got some guys on the bench that can ball but are not getting a chance.Richardson is a big time scorer but he gets 1 or 2 min a game. Why does he hates Pachula? Hardford is playing well but is not a true center Pachula could use more time in the paint.Jones is a good player he could give the guys some rest at Forward,Guard, and Center.Watch thies guys will go to another team and become super stars just like always in Hawks history. Remember Jason Terry,Stacy Augmon, Ect.

14 games to go and the Billy Knight and Coach Woodson era will come to an end. I am so frustrated with this team, they can run away with the 8th playoff spot but I don’t think they want it bad enough. Joe is doing his thing but they need a total team effort on defense to win and make the playoffs but it’s just not happening.

My reasons for not wanting these Hawks to make the playoffs are these; 1. They will be totally embarassed by Boston or Detroit in the first round. 2. The owners might make the mistake of seeing it as progress and be tempted to give the coaching staff more time. 3.Making the playoffs in a weak Eastern Conference with a record 10 or more games under 500 is by default only.

I want to be a hawks fan sooooo bad but when you have the kind of embarrassment that is the hawks front office and coaching you feel more like a hawks fool. I mean simple stuff like over playing your starters because you think this is going to allow you to win. Teams just lay in wait and then pound the hawks in the fourth quarter (oops maybe I just gave our secret away).

I am going to try and make a case for Woody, but trust I believe he doesn’t belong.

I watched the Nets game and saw us take two quarters of out playing and wanting it more to two quarters of players who just rolled over and died. Eventually if this going to be a team that any of us is going to root for they are going to have play like they have some pride.

Eventually there comes time when coaching has nothing to do with how you play on the court. You have to buckle down and leave it on the court with you and the other team. And it doesn’t seem like the hawks are willing to do that it actually seems like they are tanking.

Now if they want to get Woody fired then man up play your hearts out and show you have some pride and then come up at the end of the season and say we can’t play for him, but playing listlessly in the mist of the playoff the hunt especially in a game that meant so much shows me that this team has no heart.

And heart has all to do with the players

I have just read each of your nitty comments. Apparently none of you know too much about the Hawks History. Probebly still drinking Moma’s milk. Neither have you been following the ground work that Coach has had to lay inorder to get this team to where they are. Yea thats right from the start young babies is all He had to work with, and from what I can clearly see (you all must have mud over your eyes) they are developing into “some kinda good” Players. Oh and they will make the playoffs. Now run and tell that. My Hats off to you Coach Woodson for the fine job that you have done so far.

Who is it that said the Hawks couldn’t win 4 in a row? Ooops! Hey Ken wasn’t it you who was trying to do the Coaches job of making sure the bench was utilized. Well…darn near gave the game away the other night. (Sunday), had to end up putting Johnson & Harford back in the game to seal that win. Oh and what about last night against the Grizzlies, 38 point lead went to 12 point lead all because Coach decided to rest his first string (at your request) of course He doesn’t have since enough as a coach to know that now does He? Ooops !!. In all seriousness the name of the game is play to win not play to please. This is PLAYOFF time not Preschool. Maybe when you realize that then you will be able to get out there and be a coach of something? Until then GO HAWKS GO !!! HUGE HAWKS FAN….

Most Teams will get beat in the first round by Boston or Detroit so whats new my man. While the Hawks do have a good bench. They passed up some of the best to have a better bench. So don’t blame the Coach, He’s merely showing you what he’s working with. Blame the recruiters for the team who had a chance to get some of the best but didn’t get them. Haaay….Batman what about that 4 in a rowwwwwww……….
