If you blow a big lead, chances are you’re going to lose

The Portland Trailblazers have lost one game at home this season, and that came this past Friday against Houston. Even though they’re doing better than last season, the Hawks play made them look like the defending NBA champion.

The Hawks had several double digit leads and not only lost those, but lost the game as well. In fact, the Blazers went on a 15-4 run over the last four minutes or so in the fourth quarter, and the Hawks couldn’t do anything about it.

Here’s a question for you, Hawks fans: Why did Joe Johnson let the shot clock run down with about 33 seconds left? Was he expecting the Blazers to foul him? They wouldn’t have done that. They had plenty of time to get a shot off and win the game.

So again, why?

no b-ball I.Q.?

Blame the coach. If we were in Philly, NY or Boston people would be voicing their opinion that Woodson needs to go. We’re too polite down south. For 3 qtrs. they run the ball, get easy shots and build a lead. In the 4th they hold the ball for 22 seconds and throw up bricks. It’s like the prevent defense in the NFL. It never stops any body and the team playing it ends up losing. We’re playing the Prevent Offense. Woodson needs to go. It’s time for the fans to start voicing their opinions… all of those who are left. If we were in NY, Boston or Philly, he’d be gone a long time ago. We should settle for this display of talent.

JJ is not the go to guy at the end of the game. I’d love for someone to count how many game winning shots he’s hit vs. missed. I can think of one shot he made to win a game. They need another option, see T. Lue, Salim, Marvin or Smoove. JJ avoids contact and settles for side ways fade away jumpers that are impossible. How can I be the only one seeing this? Woodson has to go. Please Spirit Team, do something about this. You have a good core of players, don’t let it go to waste….

Oh, and how funny is it that the guy we didn’t pick Roy, is better than our so called “Super Star” in JJ? Portland wouldn’t trade him straight up for JJ, so what does that say about that years draft?

How is it that an isolation play for Joe is always the last play. Everyone in the whole place knows it so they double team him. It never works! Mike Woodson blows it every game by calling that play. Not very many people can beat a double. Not Joe either. How ‘bout a fake to Joe and kick to Marvin??? After the past two games vs the Blazers, I can see we were completely out coached. OUT WITH WOODSON!!

Hawks, Hawks, Hawks….I am personally devasted by this loss to Portland…..No excuses…. The Hawks looked GREAT..PLAYED GREAT….BUT WERE OUT COACHED IN THE END…..I understand the need to give players rest but, starting the fourth quarter off with subs versus your starters when it was evident that the momentum was shifting….THAT IS A COACH DECISION…Woodson’s demeanor during the time-outs was EXTREMELY NEGATIVE which I think led to the team simply giving a b****** performance in the last 2-3 minutes.. Woody, you are cool with me, but I hate your rotations and the attitude! As for JJ, you are not, will not ever be in the league with other superstars….three shot attempts in the last few minutes…no drives to the basket, turning the ball over…Man get a grip. JJ is an awesome player but no “go to” guy for the last shot..Hey Woody, draw up a play for Marvin!

I really hate to say this FIRE MIKE WOODSON NOW!!! You must get rid of him before its to late and the season is gone. Get larry brown or someone else that knows what they are doing. This guy along with Billy Knight will destroy this core of players if they stay. Word to Woodson play Salim!!!

Coaching change is probably needed now I’d say but please don’t call for Larry Brown. Woodson was his protege and who needs his baggage and drama?

I suggest the Hawks call up Mike Fratello. He did a good job here, and I believe he could get the most out of the players. As for Woodson, I’m sure he is a very nice person, but his coaching is horrendous and I will not set foot inside Phillips until he is gone. Nothing vindictive. I am not spending hard earned dollars on bad products, including the Hawks!

Joe Johnson tried to prove he is an all star and match ROY! Well guest what Joe cost us the GAME. Don’t forget that turn over the play before that too! Did you see the look on Anthony Johnson face during that last time out? He was totally discussed that Joe Johnson did not pass out of that double team for a better shot. I’m p** so I can imagine how the HAWKS feel! FOLKS we don’t have a big time ALL Star maybe we should stop kidding ourselves.

WTF was that! That game did hurt. I know if I felt this bad, the players had to be tearing up the locker room. They looked real good all the way til the end, but when I think about it….it was the Blazers that looked bad all the way til the end. Either way, if you have a team down like that you have to be able to take care of business, and have some plays drawn up for scoring baskets. In one time-out huddle, close to the end of the game the camera was in the Hawks huddle & I would have thought it was on freeze frame if it weren’t for the people moving in the background. Mike Woodson had his board & pin in his hand, but he was just staring at it not saying anything, & the players were looking at the board like is he going to draw something up or what! I’ve been a big supporter of Woody, but the December slide on top of the Blazer lost, makes me start to run out of patience. If only I could hit the Mega Millions I’d buy this team & gut out the front office, unless Billy & prove to me otherwise. It could be that all this falls back to the ownership, & not making it easy for our GM to make any moves…who freaking knows!!

WOW! Another 4th quarter meltdown. I have been very patient in calling for Woody’s head, but at this point I think a change is needed. Did anyone notice how at the end of the half and the end of the game Roy was allowed to go one on one without any help coming at all. Surely Woody can’t expect someone of Roy’s calibur not to beat his man off the dribble. Oh I forgot, the Hawks in general don’t think highly of Roy, thats why they drafted Shelden instead. LMAO!!!

But on the other end of the court Joe was doubled at the end of the game and look at what happened. I disagree with some of you in that Joe IS an all-star in my opinion but you cant expect miracles when a person is double and triple teamed night in and night out. But back to Woody. In the 4th quarter the Blazers ran the same pick and roll play 3 straight times and produced 3 straight 3 pointers of which Outlaw hit 2 of them. I’m like come on we know the Blazers are a good 3 point team why are we giving up open 3 pointers. Down 14 with the time left that was the only way they could come back. Thats coaching to me.

Lastly, we definitely need to get rid of BK as well. I look at Chris Paul, Deron Williams, and Brandon Roy all leading their teams with winning records and can only ask my self what was BK thinking when he drafted. The Marvin pick alot of people thought he had the most upside but you didn’t need him we needed a PG. The Sheldon pick was AWFUL. No one had Sheldon in the top 10 on their draft board but we reach up and grab him at 5. That’s ridiculous. Joe and Paul in the backcourt. Or Joe and Brandon on the wings. Man those combos could overcome the deficiencies with Woody. I’m so frustrated with the hawks.

JJ did not run the clock out, he had nowhere to go and was lucky he kept his dribbel after Roy forced him into help D in Lamarcus Aldridge. The biggest difference between Portland and ATL at the very end, the last few possessions, was the fact that LaMarcus helped Roy steer JJ out of the paint, when no one helped JJ keep B Roy from getting to the rim.

Plain and simple, B Roy played better on both ends of the court over the most critical possessions. Heck, maybe JJ was a bit fatigued, he is on the road and played all but 3 minutes of the game.

Overall, it seemed as though ATL could not miss for 3.5 Quarters and Portland could not buy a basket, and the inverse occured with enough time for Portland to catch up. I mean, Outlaw is not even a 3pt shooter, what happens if he misses those?

I understand why ATL fans and players are so upset, it had to be a heart wrenching loss; Portland lost a 25 point lead to Philly earlier this year, so I know how it feels. However, there were a lot of positives in this game and I think ATL will respond against the Suns.

Good luck. I really like this ATL team, definitely my favorite East Coast team.

Hey Hawks Hack,

Please do your research before you post … the Trail Blazers have lost 4 games at home this season, not 1 - They are 18-4 @ home.

I AGREE WITH EVERYONE ON THIS BLOG..WAY PAST TIME TO FIRE COACH WOODSON..HE’S TRIED, BUT FAILED..I DON’T THINK THESE PLAYERS PLAY FOR HIM AS THEY WOULD ANOTHER COACH..ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE TO LOSE THAT GAME TO THE TRAILBLAZERS WHEN THEY HAD A 18 POINT LEAD, AND LED BY 10 WITH 3 MINUTES TO PLAY!! GIVE ME A BREAK..I AGREE WITH JESSE AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE..IN NYC, PHILLY, BOSTON AND OTHER CITIES, THIS COACH WOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED A LONG TIME AGO..FIRE MIKE WOODSON ALREADY!!! STOP THE LOSING..TIME TO GET BACK TO THE PLAYOFFS AFTER A 9 YEAR DROUGHT!!!

Josh Jones,

That stat of Outlaw shooting 49% is very mis leading due to the fact he has shot so few 3 pointers. Do not get me wrong, I am impressed with his touch from 3 point range, but I find it entirely unlikely that if he were to put up as many as James Jones that he would still be around 50 percent.

Hey lancemick,

Travis Outlaw is 22-49 .449 from 3-point range. Pretty impressive.

I love how Woody scribbles frantically on his dry-erase board for 5 minutes during the final timeout, and the play is “JJ hold it for 15 seconds and shoot a triple-teamed airball.” My 2 yr old could draw up a better play on his Etch-a-Sketch.

Wow, you guys are sort of harsh on Woodson and overlook a lot of things. For example, Woodson had a phenomenal game plan that stuffed the pick and roll for 3 quarters and change until McMillan stopped doing the pick and roll to prevent the VERY effective double teams the Hawks were doing on Roy that killed the Blazers offense. Offensively it has been a long time since I have seen a team generate so many dunks…uncontested dunks…as Woodson’s guys got in this game. The one downside to his coaching job was on a night where the Hawks shot almost 53% from the field when crunch time came there was NOTHING inside. 3s and turnovers for the Hawks down the stretch.

As for the Johnson shots…Roy played as good of defense as I have ever seen one guy play on another for back to back shot clocks. Normally I am not impressed with Roy’s defense but he had Johnson’s number on those possessions. It was a standout moment. But don’t give up on the Hawks yet. You have a young team that needs time to gel. Getting rid of Woodson sets you back a couple years and will cost you in the long run.

darthweasel-

J-Chill and ZhaZha are the only Hawks who might need some gel, the others don’t have that much hair.

DAMMIT IT ERASED MY COMMENTS……

ok i’ll sum it up…… JJ is an allstar, great young player (Not on Kobe-Lebron level but who is?), its not his fault, Woody needs to draw plays… Roy succeeded but he had his coach drawing plays that allowed him to succeed, Mcmillan is a very good coach and if he was the one drawing plays for JJ and the rest of our hawks we would succeed in those situations, and if Woody was the one drawing plays for Roy and the rest of the Blazers they would fail.

Then I said: I live in Boston so I see alot of Celtic games and I see it all the time with Doc Rivers drawing up GREAT plays for Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, KG, and OTHERS and putting all them in position to succeed with great plays called for gamewinners/buzzerbeaters and just big shots in general……..

Then I made a sarcastic comment that the Celtics do have a plus in having a good young PointGuard in Rondo to initiate the plays while running the offense…… OH WAIT, WE COULD HAVE HAD HIM TOO! :(

By steve

January 28, 2008 11:24 PM | Link to this

Well, I kind of skewed that and made it not understandable……..

I said alot better the first time, but it erased my comments because i forgot to put my name in…… that the Celtics had a plus(Besides the biggest plus of having 3 of the greatest players of this generation in their big 3) in their young PG……. and unfortunately, yes the hawks could have had that good young PG too (Rondo).
