Trade deadline is near

The NBA trade deadline is tomorrow (Thursday) at 3 p.m. ET

To be honest with you, the way this team is playing, there are only three players that I wouldn’t deal if I were GM Billy: Joe Johnson, Josh Smith and Tyronn Lue.

Johnson is our leading scorer, Josh Smith is turning into a great go-to guy if Johnson has an off-night and Lue is the best point guard on the team. The players just seem to win when Lue’s on the floor.

Right now, the Hawks need a center. Zaza is the not the player he was last year and Wright is a back-up at best. Memphis center Pau Gasol might be a possibility. Memphis is trying to move him. Remember it was GM Billy who obtained Gasol after the Hawks drafted him along with Lorezen Wright for Shareff Abdur-Rahim.

Then again, GM Billy may be waiting for “the perfect deal.” If that’s the case, he may be waiting for a long time.

If you could play GM,Hawks fans, what would you do?

There are a few moves that Hawks could make. Let’s skip some of the moves that they are not in position to make (Gasol for one, as they want short term contracts and an expiring contract, none of which we have to offer) as well. The Hawks need three things (not two like I keep reading about): 1) a distributing, penetrating PG who plays good D and is at least 6’2”; 2) a big (4 or 5) who plays great D, rebounds fiercely and takes up space in the middle, while not being a liability from a speed perspective)=; and 3) a second option on offense to Joe (Josh is a solid #3 option, but not a #2 on an everyday basis).

Here are the moves I think would help the Hawks short/long term:

1) Brendan Haywood and Jarvis Hayes for Salim, LoWright and Batista (all going to Portland, while Washington gets Magloire). This rumored deal from 2 weeks ago makes great sense from the Hawks perspective. Haywood provides the big body at the 5 who is an excellent rebounder, plays good D and doesn’t demand the ball on offense, while doing all the little things (setting picks, gets back on D) that are important to a winning team. Hayes could just need a change of scenery and some luck regarding his health to possibly be a steal. He also has a team option on his contract, so if he doesn’t work out, not much of a gamble. This would add a couple of million to the payroll, but there would still be plenty of room under the cap.

2) Trade Marvin, Speedy, Medvedenko and our second round pick in 07 for Darko Milicic, Carlos Arroyo and Pat Garrity. There is a good chance Darko leaves next summer without any comp, so Orlando is looking to move him now if they get comparable value. Marvin Williams for Darko seems like a fair deal straight up, but due to salaries, we need to include Speedy and Arroyo. Arroyo is the PG that fills the needs of the Hawks. Penetrator, distributor, good D. Milicic would allow Smith to move to the 3, which is where he needs to play. Hill may retire or just leave after this year, and Williams would be able to take over for years to come. Garrity and Medvedenko are needed to make the deal work under the trade rules, and their contracts expire after this season. The 2nd round pick is just the deal sweetener.

3) Trade Lue to Miami for Michael Doleac and their #1 pick in 2008. Miami needs a PG with playoff experience, and Lue fits their needs perfectly. The injury should be healed within the week. Doleac is just salary filler, as it’s the #1 pick the Hawks want. 08 could be a great draft with a bunch of PGs available, and this would be a great asset to have on the books.

Still no trade for a good #2 option, but this would set them up to get that in the offseason.

This would leave the team as:

Starters - Haywood, Milicic, Smith, JJ and Arroyo

Bench - Zaza, Doleac, Sheldon, Solomon Jones, Garrity, Childress, Hayes, Ivey, Medvedenko, Richardson

Now, I know the Hawks would be lucky to pull off one trade , much less three, but each one adds a different dimension that the Hawks need.

I agree somewhat… I would be open to trading Lue as well. Johnson and Smith are the only real keepers on this team. I like Marvin and I think he will be a solid player, but I don’t think he will fit well with Joe and J-Smoove in the future. The Hawks should make everyone else available and go after the best post player possible, preferably Pau Gasol. I doubt Memphis will do a Gasol deal with Atlanta, especially when they are demanding Deng or Gordon from Chicago for him, but it’s still worth a shot.

You don’t get Gasol without Josh Smith and Josh Childress/or Marvin Williams. It just won’t happen! He is the face of that franchise and you are dealing with Jerry West. Don’t expect BK to even have the ability to pull off one trade that helps this team without taking a core piece or 2 to get one. That is the way it will have to happen. These Hawks don’t have a lot of value other than their potential. And you can forget about getting Speedy out of here. He is here for the bulk of his contract and this was just a horrible signing when you could have had multiple young PGs to learn from Lue and you continue to ignore the needs of your team. I really don’t have one fix that will take care of all of BK’s decisions. It will take 2-3 trades to get this team contending and you might have to move the entire roster save for JJ.

i think they need to give up a forward and a point gaurd at the time i thought speedy was going to be great but face the facts he sucks this season. i would trade chilldress, salim, and claxton. for atkins and gasol, and the starters would be wright, gasol, smith, johnson, and atkins and the hawks would be a winning team. but thats not going to happen because billy knight does not make things happen he’s not aggresive enough to get good players

How can you give up on a guy that is in his second year and only played one year of college? Marvin is going to be good. He already is pretty good. I would not trade Joe, Smith, Childress, or Marvin. That is the core of the team and they need to be kept. Why do people not realize what Childress brings to this team. Without him, we have nobody who can consistently play off the bench. you need more than five good players. Do not trade for Gasol. He is soft down low and will not help us too much. He would provide some low post scoring but that is about it. I hav never been a fan of his.

Question: For how many more years will we be saying “the Hawks need a pg and a big in the middle?” I think it’s been 3-ish years straight…with no end in sight. Do you think 3 years of needing the SAME THING is enough? When will the Hawks finally get the pg and c? Three more years? Today? Next year?

If you had told me after the 2003 season that the Hawks were going to need 2 position players, a point guard and a physical center, I would have said “of course they do.” If you would have then told me they wouldn’t get EITHER of them for over 3 or 4 years, I would have started to cheer for another team.

joshgiggity, let’s bring some realism into this. Childress (our 6th man), Salim (10 minutes a game off the bench) and Speedy (always hurt and hasn’t lived up to expectations, who still has 3 years left on his contract) for Gasol AND Atkins? C’mon. Why not ask for their #1 draft pick while you’re at it. If you take ANY team in the NBA, and they were to offer the Hawks their 6th man, a bench player who can shoot, but only sees 10 minutes a game currently, and a guy who has been hurt as much as he’s been healthy, with a chronic knee condition, would you give up Joe Johnson for that if Joe asked to be traded? Memphis has asked Chicago for Deng & Gordon, or one of them and the Knicks first round pick, as well as Tyrus Thomas. Bash Billy if you want (and I do often), but don’t hang that trade on him. Come up with something realistic.

A more realistic deal for Gasol would be Marvin, Childress (or Sheldon, thier choice), Zaza and Indy’s #1 pick. Unfortunately, I don’t think Memphis would take this deal. Would anybody out there do this deal if they were Memphis? Right.

How about if we traded Speedy, Stoudamire, and threw in BILLY KNIGHT! Memphis would definitely take that trade because theyd be getting two good players PLUS the best GM in the NBA!!!!

We f*** had Gasol! BK is a moron.

Unless you can get a point or center, it is a waste of time to make any moves. Time for Knight and Woodson to go, they have had long enough, Knight did a good job cleaning house but his drafts have been questionable at best. Childress is a nice player but not where he was picked, Marvin, has great potential but he will never be a star who scores 25 or 30 a night, Sheldon will go down as one of the worst picks ever. Sheldon is a bottom of the first round guy at best. The thing I look at is if everyone was healthy every game of the year how much better would we be? We desperatly need a point that can get in the lane, get some cheap points on layups and free throws and also distribute. If the guy from Carolina comes out or jarvis from Tech I think you have to jump on either of them.

I know second round picks usually don’t stick long term but Anthony Johnson? Another awful move in a long line of awful moves.

I don’t think this is an awful move at all. HE is a tough veteran that can run a team. He was Indiana’s point point guard for a couple of years, as Tinsley was hurt. He can score some, dish some, and will not turn the ball over. I think it is a pretty good trade.
