A gentlemen’s game?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
As the trade deadline looms closer in Major League Baseball and as NFL teams sign free agents before camp opens, I am intrigued with the NBA’s “sign and trade” method. To my knowledge, no other pro sports league moves players to other teams quite like that.
Instead of simply becoming a free agent and choosing where the money is, Al Harrington will simply wait for the Hawks to sign him and then trade him to another team for players.
Amazing.
Amazing that a team would re-sign a player and trade him instead of letting him go. In this day and age, I guess I’ve gotten used to the “free-for-all” that the other sports leagues use. A better term might be, “You snooze, you lose.”
Kudos to the NBA for putting this method in place. It makes sure that some teams aren’t left holding the bag when their best player(s) leave. But, the downside is that players like Harrington are waiting, so I guess it turns the players into “cattle” more so than other leagues.
Thoughts?

You are a freakin idiot. How in the hell did you get a job writing for this blog? You know absolutely nothing about the NBA. < “Amazing that a team would resign a player and trade him instead of letting him go”.> Why is that amazing? It benefits the team moron because they get something in return. It also allows the teams who want the player the ability to get him if they are over the salary cap. Read up on how a sign and trade works and why teams do them before you get on a blog and say something stupid.

I do see your point, and it has always been strange to me, for baseball to know a guy is a free agent and not get anything for the guy. He just walks away to any team he wants. Just think of the offers you could get for a sign and trade for Jeter, A Rod or Perdo………

I’d say you are earning your by line with this column. The only reason Al is waiting for the Hawks to resign and trade him is because the hawks have the most available cap space to do so. Al would receive far less money if he signed outright with another team.
This isnt about Al doing right by the Hawks. This about him getting the most money possible in his new deal. This, of course, isnt even an option in MLB, as they have no salary cap. But you probably already knew that, didnt you??? No??? Not suprised…
Clearly, us readers are the ones left holding the bag when the AJC continues to not release you from your duties here, and us from the tortoure that is reading your hawks coverage. I’m willing to bet the ajc would sign and trade you, but they would probably only get the family circus in return. But, that just might be a step up.

Effin lunacy…idiotic. I’m all for an intelligent fan blog but you are simply a moron. Stupid. Lost. Undeserving. Hopefully this is your last blog and they will give this to someone who understands something about the NBA.
As an aside, I would bet that you never went to a Braves game pre-1991 and then showed up with a tomahawk painted on your cheek when they made their first run and got a good seat and didn’t know when to cheer.
This bit is an abomination. You suck.

Family Circus for this chit would be the steal of a life time for the AJC! They’d thank their lucky stars to get the TV Guide crossword puzzle. Joke. Completely unworthy.

You make Bradley and Moore look like Shakespeare and Aristotle and Woodward and Bernstein all rolled together. I know this paper wants to put itself on a world-class stage but it’s crap like this that will assure that it never gets there (it reflects more on the editors than it does on you, Hack). This is offensive in its ignorance and almost assures that I will never come back to this site as it can not be taken seriously.

Hawk Hack is the smartest person here. Respect him/her knowledge of Basketball. He/She clearly knows more than all. He/She as said it from the start. That the Hawks are slow even though they are the youngest, most athletic, versatile, one of the best condition teams in the league.

Who cares? What we want to know is what does Atlanta plan on doing with Al? Are they going for Magloire in a 3 way deal? This team has to take advantage of this and get another bruiser inside. Atlanta can’t possibly expect The Landlord to be their only inside presence this year, and I’m holding out hope that this organization will make a sensible deal.
Here’s a better question: Even though it’s summer league, what are the fans’ thoughts on the aggresive play of Marvin Williams so far? Is this a sign of things to come?

Hawks Hack—-the fans of the hawks are hurt/angry. Keep that in mind before your(if ever) next post. Yeah I would like to hear as well how things are in Orlando—an insiders view so to speak.

Man are there some angry posters around here. The disrespect in conveying your point of view and disagreement is a reflection of yourselves, not the author of the blog

I think that the anger is coming from the fan blog is from someone that apparently doesn’t know much about basketball at all. And at all I mean no aspect of it. I have read the last 5-6 blogs and this person doesn’t seem to know too much about the on the court game, how trades work, the actual makeup of the Hawks team or the players that the hawks are targeting.
Sign and trades aren’t that hard to understand. A team needs to trade someone to the team the player is coming from to stay under the cap(or stop the other team from matching in Joe Johnsons case). Anyone that takes on the responsibility to write for a major paper’s blog should at least have enough knowledge of the sport to write a compelling entry.

The Player gets another year on his contract by doing a sign and trade. Only the current team has the ability to sign a player for the max years (6) instead of 5 years that he would get signing a regular free agent contract.

I hope no one at the newspaper that covers the Hawks is surprised by how terrible Shelden Williams looks. First of all, the media hype when it comes to Duke players never ends. And on top of that, NBA teams continue to draft them lottery, which does not help. His only contribution to a NBA team was going to be rebounding and shot blocking. However, he will not even be good enough at that to warrant a top 5 pick. Year after year after year Dick Vitale pumps up some kid from Duke like that invented the game of basketball, and year after year the come to the NBA and our JUST AVERAGE. When you consider their draft position, they are below average.

Agreed on the idiocy of this post. The team doesn’t choose which team to trade the player. The player chooses a team, then the new team attempts to trade for him from his previous team so that he is eligible for the extra compensation that is afforded to players resigning with a team and to avoid salary cap issues with a larger salary. Joe Johnson made the choice to come to the Hawks, not Phoenix. Then to get the max salary that he wanted and the Hawks were willing to give, the two teams negotiatied that theft of the Hawks.
It ain’t rocket science, and if you don’t get it you probably shouldn’t be writing a blog for a basketball team. Basketweaving might be a better topic for you Hack.

You guys are reading way too much into this.
I know what “sign and trade” is, I was simply remarking that the NBA is the only pro league that does their business that way.
Sheesh!

The Hawks are delaying the sign and trade of Al Harrington apparently for more money from the Pacers. I say, “Billy do the deal now and let Al move on.” I disagree with you on the trade because I think that Al is a consistent 18 point 7-9 rebound guy. Marvin is not ready but he’s improving.
