Obama-Nation (and other stuff)
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
CHICAGO - In my best effort to show extreme patriotism on this historic day, I decided to mimic the actions of our 44th President, in my own way.
When I arrived here in Barack Obama’s home city this morning I hopped the train (well, the CTA) for the ride to my downtown hotel.
It wasn’t the same as tracing Lincoln’s steps to Washington, but I used my imagination.
Folks in Washington are seeing the big man up close and personal, but the people here in Chicago have a relationship with the nation’s new boss that you have to see to believe.
Everywhere you go in this city there is an Obama presence (thus my new nickname for the Windy City: Obama-Nation).
It’s a sight to see, even on a wickedly cold but sunny day like this one.
It makes tonight’s Hawks-Bulls game at the United Center seem a bit well, forget that. Obama loves basketball. So even on a day like today, when we all know he has a million different things going on, someone will be feeding him the scores from around the league.
ON THE BIG SCREEN: A bus mishap forced the Hawks to scrap their plans to watch the inauguration from a conference room at their downtown hotel. But someone at the United Center must have known how important the occasion was for Hawks coach Mike Woodson and his team.
The Hawks ended up watching the entire affair on the Jumbotron at the arena.
“It was unreal,” Hawks VP of PR Arthur Triche said. “It was like the next best thing to actually being in Washington.”
Woodson gave a short but moving speech before Monday’s game about the significance of honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his day but also about the importance of what was to come earlier today.
“I feel it is important for not only our guys but everyone to reflect on the things that happen in life and be grateful for the things we have,” Woodson said.
REHAB FOR CHILDRESS: As you might have already seen on ajc.com, former Hawks swingman Josh Childress had sports hernia surgery Tuesday in Philadelphia and will be out for six to eight weeks, per his agent Jim Tanner.
I spoke with Childress at length last week for an interesting Q&A that will be online this week. He mentioned that he was coming back to the states to be examined. I had no idea then that it was something that required surgery. If he’s out that long, his situation with Olympiacos going forward gets very interesting if you’re the Hawks.
Very, very interesting.
It’s impossible to speculate about what might happen. But Childress can opt out of his deal with Olympiacos and the Hawks still own his NBA rights.
Like I said, this latest news could make things very, very interesting.

Abomination is apt.
If he were a black conservative, there’d be so much less fanfare.
The most corrupt city politics in the country has a relationship with the new president. Great.
We can agree to disagree on the enthusiasm. 46% of voters didn’t pick him.
As constituted, this Hawks team is a 2nd round playoff team. Three east teams are clearly better than they are and there is little chance of overcoming the talent difference. At least Woodson will have something new to say, “we won a playoff series, we’re getting better. Stick with me.” If we’re setting up for a longer run next year, do you trade Bibby? Do we keep Woodson again? The season is half over and we can see what the team looks like (even before the injuries), and they are no better than 4th, maybe 5th in the East. Now what?

Sekou,
Does that mean that childress will be available if the hawks make a playoff run?
are the hawks goin’ to do anything before feb. 19th trade deadline?

If Josh Childress somehow were to return to the Hawks, it goes without saying that it would make the team much, much better. Sekou, I have a slightly different question though… would the Hawks be able to trade the rights to Childress before the trading deadline for a big man, and if so how would the salary cap come in to play?

Didn’t mean to start a political conversation here. It’s just interesting that the Hawks are here tonight in the Land of Obama. That’s all. It’s game time, though, so I’ll move on from the Fox News vs MSNBC stuff.

Ant,
Childress is still currently under contract with Olympiacos bro. As for the trade deadline, I’m not sure what makes sense to me. I suspect the Hawks will keep their phones on but won’t go crazy trying to shake things up if they’re still eight games over .500 by Feb. 19.

Come on truthhurst you are not bitter are you. He is your President too. What a great day in politcs. The Hawks need to cap it off with a win but this will be tough. As I have said many times before This team needs to stay together and continue to grow together. I would rather see a second round match up against the Celtics than Cavs. But we can’t jump the gun because a 4 vs 5 eitherway puts us against the Pistons. Oh… Who’s minutes would Childress get ? We don’t need him. We need somebody who can score in the post. J.S AND A.H. Should work like hell this offseason on that.

Sorry Sekou, I could’nt resist.
The Truth Hurts Speaking of politics, here is a little fact check just to keep us all honest on this blog:
The 2008 election
Democrat Barack Obama swept the popular and Electoral College vote with the largest popular vote as well as the largest majority in recent times. His majority of some 9.5 million votes was the largest on record. Obama also captured nine states from the Republicans, with a total electoral vote count of 112. This was a decisive factor. The states that he captured were:
In the West: Nevada (5)
In the Midwest: Colorado (9) and New Mexico (5)
In the South, Florida (27)
In the North and East: Indiana (11), Iowa (7), North Carolina (15), Ohio (20), and Virginia (13).

Sekou,
On the Childress front, since the Hawks already own his rights — and we have to keep his salary on the books for cap purposes (correct?) — can’t we activate him at anytime if he were to be released from his European contract?
If that’s not the case, what am I missing?
And it seems the Hawks’ injury bug is global, I’d wear one of those oversized SARS masks like the do in Japan if you’re covering the game close to the bench!
Anyway, I just hope we can sneak out of Chi-town with a win and without any more losses. I knew Woody’s penchant for shortening the bench could bite us in the tail — but not this badly …
Oh, and I hear Speedy strained his neck watching the Jumbotron and is out at least another three months … j/k.
Later,
Don!

We can talk politics on this blog all we want, and this is a great day to witness in history. Obama is the president now for the next 4 years at least, so everybody chill, give him a chance, and don’t hate. No conservative president has ever had the talents, charisma and intelligence to move people all over the world, That is why the fanfare. Nobody forced a million people to come out and watch history been made, they are there by choice. So this is a great, wonderful historic date for Anerica, be proud of it, and celebrate it. The Whole world is watching us.
Obama Rocks!!! Go Mr. President!!!!!!!!
Hawks. It’s really simple. They play together, hustle hard, play great defence for 48 minutes and they win. Anything short, they lose. They must play the bench. Woody has no choice anyhow.
Childress. Sekou threw a good one out there. Cant wait for that Q & A. I’m sure he can get that surgery done abroad, coming home is quite interesting. Also being out of action for weeks. How will his club take that? I’m not speculating yet, though. Maybe he just needed some home cooking, familia love, and a chance to see his old team in the playoff mix.
Seedings. This is way too early, fellas, talking about seedings and playoff matchups. It’s game to game, remember? Save for the Celtics, Magic and Cavs, there is not that much separation between the remaining East. Hawks and Detroit has a little separation, but a losing streak will put an end to that. I feel their will be a wild finish in the East to end the season. I feel their will be some suprising seedings, and I have a good feeling also that the East will crown a new Champion. I know for sure that there will be more compelling playoff basketball being played in the East than the West. The fact that those West Coast games come on late also does not help. Then you wanna stay up for the post game show too? ‘Inside The NBA”? After a steady game diet of brown liquor? Come on, man! Dude gotta work tomorrow!

just speculation i found in Chad Fords chat wrap from espn… however thought it would be good material to share… though personally i would much rather send Horford in both packages than Josh…
Christopher (Phoenix, AZ): Amare to the Atl for Josh Smith and Marvin Williams. Any chance that can happen? Many of us in Phx are so tired of Amare’s cry baby approach to a professional game AND he plays zero D and won’t rebound. Thoughts?
SportsNation Chad Ford: The Hawks turned down a deal for Amare in the summer of 2007. Would they pull the trigger now? Would be a good deal I think for both teams. Stoudemire is still a superstar who has struggled with the Suns changing identity. Smith and Williams aren’t slouches either and help the Suns rebuild with some youth. However, Smith is a base year compensation player which means his contract is difficult to trade until this summer.
Ben (Toronto): If you’re Colangelo would you trade Bosh prior to next summer, or quickly try to build a contender? I’m sure Bosh could bring in a lot.
SportsNation Chad Ford: I’d consider trading Bosh if I was convinced he was bolting, no matter what, in the summer of 2010. I think the chances are very good that Bosh leaves, so yes … I’d see what I could get. As good as Bosh is, his looming free agency makes him a little tougher to move. Teams won’t want to give up everything for a guy who could bolt soon and they need to keep enough good players in tact to convince Bosh to stay. Obviously just about every team in the league would love a shot at him. But I think the Raptors would have to settle for … cap space, lottery picks, a few young players and maybe one good vet. Though a Josh Smith and Marvin Williams for Bosh move could be something interesting for Toronto and Atlanta.

BigDave,
Interesting tidbit, although as with all rumors, it doesn’t mean that the two teams are, have been, or even will be talking….although I think they should. Although it’s only opinion, I don’t agree with a Bosh for Horford deal of any kind. Why? Because that only puts Bosh in the same situation he’s in right now. Namely, without a strong frontcourt mate. Why would he even want to change addresses for the same problem? He’ll be a FA in 2010, so we’d only be renting his services for a year and a half. Sound familiar…..
Much as I don’t like moving Smith, giving him and Marvin up for Bosh and something added on the side is a better swap in my opinion. And much as I feel like Horford should be playing PF instead of center, I’d rather see him in the frontcourt alongside Bosh than Smith. We’d have no post bangers outside of Zaza and RandMo. Does that sound appetizing to you? Just sayin’…

Ray, whats up…
yea i posted it knowing it was just what it was, simple speculation. maybe not even rumor, just expert opinion from Chad Ford. sure enough about Bosh though, however, i look at it from a different perspective. one that would automatically improve the play of our perimeter players, specifically Joe; who with such a trade would make it impossible for him to see as many double teams with an legitimate offensive threat. as far as the argument of Josh over Al.. personally i feel that Josh has a greater upside, offensively and defensively. though i love his effort and intangibles,im just not a fan of Al’s overall game and never have been since watching him at Fla. i think Josh’s game will improve with a player like Bosh here…

ray, sorry cut my thoughts short cause i was so impressed with the way we came out…
to my point though; you know Bosh doesnt have the caliber of player’s we have on the perimeter… so though down low it would be a similar situation, he will come to a much better overall starting 5…
but yea, with our mgt. issues it would surely be a rental, though who knows of our financial status in 2010…

Shouldn’t it be a great day in America anytime a new president takes office and not just a partially black president? All the “great day” comments just show who the true racists are. I truly hope our next president is black too…as long as he’s not Obama and he is a conservative. The government is not the answer, people. Education, hard work, and self-reliance will get you a long way in this great country. Time to stop blaming everyone else for your shortcomings and take responsibility for your own actions!
Best of luck to Obama, he is going to need it. He can’t vote present anymore. But he can always fall back on the two crutches of the Democratic party…blame racism and the Republicans. When Obama fails, he can always blame Bush for his screw ups, right?

No knock on Mario, Hunter and Gardner but I would love to see a JChildress, Diop, Jamal Maglorie and James Jones in a Hawks uni right now… Hopefully this will motivate them to bring in some help (Joe Smith, Mike Miller, Channing Frye, Chris Wilcox) before the trade deadline.

Responding to that Chad Ford article… I would be very opposed to a deal for Stoudemire. I’ve always thought too much of his offensive success was a result of playing with Steve Nash, and he is pathetic defensively. A Bosh deal though is not a bad idea — he isn’t a lock down defender either but he does play on both ends of the floor and has a more refined half court offensive game (in my opinion) than Stoudemire. Problem is, we’d then be faced with the same problem the Raptors have now, which is whether or not he can be re-signed in 2010.
Honestly though if the Hawks were going to trade Smith and Williams for a big man somewhere, I’d rather see them go after Al Jefferson. He’s not the greatest man to man defender either, but he does provide more of a shot blocking presence than either Stoudemire or Bosh along with a pretty refined post game, and best of all he’s already signed long term to a pretty reasonable deal for a man with his skills. Don’t underestimate the importance of having a contract in place when the Hawks try to acquire players, with their financial situation.

If it wasn’t for Bibby this wouldn’t even be a game. They might be down 20 without Bibby. They are getting owned on the glass… Evans is giving us nothing once again.. Flip is useless if his shot is not falling… I like Mario but I would rather have a guy like Dermarr Johnson coming off the bench than him.. Pachulia plays no defense what so ever.. We do not box out and cant hit free throws. The only way we win this is if Bibby stays hot and Joe gets it going. Good to see Gardner come in and hit a shot. This is why we miss a guy like Law and his ability to penetrate. We shoot way too many jumpers.

I love the idea of Jefferson. I’ve always liked his all around game. The guy will flat out “go after it” every single night!! He’s young, strong, HEALTY, and mean down low. Match him with Horford…heck yes I’d trade Marvin and Smith for him…but I’d also ask for another player or draft pick.

At halftime, the Hawks are being out-rebounded 28-13 overall and 12-5 offensively. In other words the Bulls have almost as many offensive rebounds as the Hawks do total rebounds.
You simply cannot win games getting killed on the glass like that. The Bulls are not playing all that great despite their lead. They are a poorly coached team with no offensive system to speak of who rely on jumpshots for scoring even more than the Hawks do. Other than Derrick Rose nobody else on their team can score in any way other than via hustle points or jumpshooting. The only real reason they are ahead is the ridiculous advantage in rebounding.
I posted on the Hawks Hack blog that which front court is more active, more energetic and contributes more hustle plays is going to determine the winner of this game. So far, Thomas, Noah, Deng, Nocioni, and Gray are outplaying J-Smoove, Zaza, Solo and Mo Evans on the boards. That’s not a good sign for the Hawks heading into the 2nd half.

Ideally I’d rather keep Smith and trade Marvin and Horford for him… I love Josh Smith’s versatility and defensive impact too much to want to give him up over Horford. But at the same time the T-Wolves would have to be out of their damn minds to not require that J-Smoove is included in any package for Jefferson.

What a game for Bibby!
cp, I’m with you on being concerned about Josh’s decrease in blocked shots… like Melvin said though, his all around defense is still good, but I’d like to see Sekou maybe ask Josh about it. Clearly it’s a huge change in his game, as he’s been a shot blocker his entire career until this month.

Great win by the Hawks tonite… These guys play hard tonight. Short handed and the big three Bibby, JJ and Josh brought enough energy on back to back nights to get this win. Not sure if these Hawks would have won this game last year…

Good Win tonight…. Two starters out and we squeeze one out… I think 25-16 is good but not great for this type team. I hope that we have at least one of them back by Friday…
Go Hawks

We won but man we have to step it up on the rebounding aspect . Bibby was huge for us.. I have no idea whats going on with Evans and Flip is a turnover chucking machine… Joe was off tonight. Josh was good on the offensive end but he has to learn to block out. Pachulia also had a solid game. But what the hell was with the iso to Joe near the end of the game when it was clear he was struggling and Bibby was on fire. We need to add something to our bench. I hope Sund has a move in the works or something. Good point Melvin but his blocking out is still a major concern. On that one free throw attempt he was caught sleeping and Kirk came in and tipped the ball.

Hawks did what they had to do.They played together, shared the ball, played defence, scraped, and they came up with the win, just like I said, short handed as they are. Beautiful win, Atlanta. Now can we beat Milwaukee and avenge our loss to Phoenix?
I said on the last blog. Do the Hawks have a big three in Joe, Josh, and Bibby?
Bibby was awesome tonight. I believe this was his best road game as a Hawk. Playing for a contract year or not, Mike Bibby is A Big Time Stud, man!!!!!
Josh was tight. Gardner went one of three, shot another long air ball, but I still like his potential. He has a nice stroke.
Great win.
Go Hawks!

Hmmmm my first chance to watch the Hawks from my den in the basement.(Damn it feels good to be back home)
I’m going to keep it short and sweet. Great win tonight, and I’d like to see Gardner get more burn…
Peace Hawks Fam….
It time for everyone to roll up their sleeves and get to work…

Bibby bails us out this time. JJ had a nice bunch of assists, but shot badly again. Let me guess…he’s tired…of course he is, but he played the same number of minutes Bibby did, eh? Anyway…
Josh provides another double double, but his lack of blocked shots is a bit perplexing. That, and he seems to be loafing it at times. Weird, and disappointing. I don’t know what the deal is, but hard to argue with yet another night of 50% shooting, 17 points, and 14 boards. Not to mention 3 assists and only 1 turnover. I wonder how dumb he looks to guys still…
BigDave,
I hear ya. It could work. But Bosh is no more a center than Al Horford is. Still, him and Smith is not a bad frontcourt by any means. I’d just be looking to add another big body down there…
Najeh,
I love Smith’s game. I just don’t know about giving up Horford. I love his game as well, and think that he provides us with some much needed beef (but not enough). Lose him, and you better find some more, as it would not come with a guy like Bosh. Now Al Jefferson? Oh I can see that deal. He’s got the beef, and he’s a 20 and 10 guy. Deal done, but as you say, we gotta get more than just big Al for two of our starting forwards.
And yeah, that Tyrus Thomas “block” WAS a goal tend. No doubt in my mind.
Melvin,
You had it down. You know you had it down. Good call.

Hawks swept the Bulls this season. Get’em out of here…Hopefully we can add some other teams to that list like Bobcats, Bucks, Heat, Knicks, Kings, Wiz and Clippers…

Kudos to Mike Bibby, what a great game he had. The best I’ve seen him looked all season. Also, a rare Kudos to Woody for managing a game with short-handed players. He really had these players focused early. I know JJ layed some eggs near the end but considering he played so many minutes, (I never saw him on the bench) the fatigue fact was due to catch-up with him.
What ever juiced Bibby up for this game, I would love to order some for myself. He looked like Bibby back in the day; I’m talking offense and (yes) defense. He refused to let the Hawks lose. WoW!

Early on seem like a lot of bloggers panic big time because the Hawks was losing. All kind of trade talks about who the Hawks need to trade for. IF the players panic like some of us on this blog, then they really will be in trouble. We won and that’s the only thing that really matter. Good win Hawks

Missing two starters. On the road where we have a losing record. Playing the last game of the season against a team we have never swept in a season series. How many times in the past four years would we have won this game under these circumstances?
Great job Bibby. Great job team. Great job Woody. The season is half over and the team is on track for a fifty win season. One more step to another season with a progression over the past four for the current regime.
Why does anyone want to talk about trades that could totally disrupt what this team currently has going? Say what you will about the ASG they have shown the patience to allow a young team to develop slowly but steadily into a team that should be competitive for years to come.
