HAWKSVILLE - When the Hawks finally make it back to Atlanta this weekend from their three-game Western Conference road swing, Zaza Pachulia will have a few more frequent flier miles in tow.

While his teammates hustled back to their Los Angeles hotel after Wednesday’s win over the Clippers, Pachulia headed for the airport and a red eye flight back to Atlanta.

Pachulia said he had to get back to begin the interviewing process for getting his Green Card (a process that should be completed in a few weeks).

That meant a five-hour flight back to Atlanta, hustling to make his appointment and then another flight Thursday evening back to California to meet the Hawks in San Francisco for tonight’s game against Golden State.

“It’s like flying back to Europe, it was so long,” Pachulia said by phone Friday morning from the Hawks’ team bus as they headed to shootaround practice. “I got back to Atlanta about 9:30 [Thursday morning], handled my business and then I was back on a plane at 7 [p.m.]. I got in here about 9:30 [Thursday night]. It’s like going from Atlanta to London. Man, it was a long day.”

Pachulia didn’t have to miss any work to get his business done. Hawks coach Mike Woodson gave the Hawks Thursday off. He took them out for a team lunch in Los Angeles before they boarded an afternoon flight for the quick hop to the Bay Area.

“Coach understands, obviously,” Pachulia said. “I told everyone months before, so they knew my situation and that this was something that I had to do. And as long as I didn’t have to miss a game or any practice I was fine.”

Sure, but with all that flying in such a short period of time, when did Pachulia have time to rest?

“On the plane,” he said and then laughed. “At least I tried to. But we’re used to it in this business. We fly so much that resting on the plane is just a part of our lives.”

Sekou, after the game get to Yoshi’s in the Fillmore. If you can’t get reservations go to Oaktown to Washington St by the bay (Jack London Square), to the orginal Yoshi.

I suppose Joe will remain at the 3 for a while, huh?

Weird Zaza had to do this when the team is about as far away as you can get from ATL.

I know Flip has been playing well. I still hope to see more of Acie tonight. I think Woody should let Joe rest a little before the end of the 1st qtr and at the beginning of the 4th so his legs are fresh for the final push. I also want to see how the team responds with Joe on the bench and the other team makes a run. Woody calls Joe back in every time like a panic button. Come on Marvin, get some more attempts up.

Go Hawks!

I always love games against the Warriors. They make the Hawks run. Even when a team isn’t interested in running, they have to against the Warriors.

The Hawks need to handle the Warriors and try and get home to recover just a bit more. They still look like a weary team to me. I’m not sure what kind of energy boost they need. But they need something to jumpstart them, something to get them back to that zone they were in earlier this season.

I’m no Green Card expert, so I don’t know why Zaza had to do this now. But I would assume that it’s not a negotiable thing, so he had to get back to Atlanta to care of that business.

sekou maybe they should try those 5 HOUR ENERGY drinks. they work for Breyland Edwards and Osi Umenori. i have tried them and they give me a boost.

After all that traveling (and Shaq elbows) they should just give ZaZa the green card. He definetly earn it….

Left Knee, seems like every coached in the league rest his star players at the end of the 1st qtr and start of the 2nd in the 1st half. Then rest them again at the end of the 3rd qtr and the start of the 4th. Doing it this way would allow their star players a few mins of extra rest b/c of the changing of quarters. But Woody is too clever to follow the trend. He’s a trend setter. He’s going to play Joe the entire 2nd half without rest b/c Joe is his man of steel (sort of like that staple button).

Doc, it’s mindblogging that we beat a Denver team with Melo and Phx lose to Denver w/o Melo. I know, I know, it’s not coaching…

bigdave, from the last blog… assuming that the court ruling is final (and there are no appeals), then likely, which ever partial owner wins will likely need to find another partner(s) to keep the team viable. We can only hope that they have lined some folk up and have even socialized with Stern who they may add to the mix depending on the results. I have no idea how long it takes for the other owners to approve a new partner, but hopefully, everything will be resolved prior to the June draft. I say that because if this thing doesn’t get done by the February trading deadline, the next time that we would need to have a long-term management team in place is draft night (which comes before free agency begins).

Mark Cuban, Dr B in L.A and most other owners would have had a private jet for ZaZa. Our ownership was classless on this one. I just hope they don’t blow it with Bibby.

Monta Ellis and Stephen Jackson may both be back for tonight’s game. The Warriors are loaded with perimeter players who can score one on one and who like jacking up shots. The more the Hawks can keep the Warriors out of the lane and away from the hoop, the better chance they will have of winning tonight’s game. If they can force the Warriors into jumpshots all game, they just have to make sure they can box out Andris Biedrins (one of the best rebounders in the game) and they will win.

Astro Joe, I was going more for the Ollie Williams effect, but Al Roker works too I guess.

Good article on the owners situation. I don’t understand how the guy (belkin) can contest his own apprasial. Seems to me the other 7 members should have chose the 2nd apprasier. Also, I wonder since the ATL/DC groups had to pour more than 75 mil into the teams as capital calls would that have an impact on how much they would pay to buyout Belkin or vice versa. Feb 17 can’t get here quick enough..

Terrell, this is a Hawks blog….At least someone is excited round here about a team no one else cares about….

I wonder if we are going to see Acie Law get a chance to play in the game since the Warriors do not play any defense whatsoever. He didnt get a chance to play while they were here in Atlanta. If he plays, it will get Joe a chance to rest since they wont have to play until Monday….

Does it seem as if the Hawks as a team need a chance to rest. If they get off to a slow start tonight, the Warriors are going to run them out of the arena….

Don’t they have an INS office on the West Coast instead of ZaZa having to come to Atlanta for a green card renewal. Just maybe we cn see Othello Harrington come in play some minutes for some hustle points…..

Well, I’ll have access to a computer for the next couple of days, so I can try and catch up. I want to comment about the loss in Phoenix. I don’t understand why Woodson would play JJ and Bibby during crunch time considering how poorly they were shooting and playing. Murray and Acie were very effective and produced on both ends of the court, expecially during our comeback, yet weren’t allowed to una$$ the bench during crunch time.

I’m aggressive by nature, and I prefer a HC that coaches to win, rather than one that tries not to lose. A HC that uses his bench to rest his key players, to have them fresh and rested for a 4th qtr run, is looking ahead and coaching to win. A HC that runs his key players into the ground for 3qtrs, and is afraid to use his bench when it’s obvious his key players are fatigued, is insecure and coaching not to lose. Whether the team is 20 pts ahead or behind, he sticks with the same players, rotation, distribution of mins, and can’t bring himself to adjust his approach, in spite of the uaual outcome.

Melvin that is the same thing I was thinking. Law was blowing past Warrior defenders with ease.. The way Woodson rewards him with good play I just don’t know if Law will see any significant minutes in the second half. It took him forever to get him in during the first half although Bibby and Flip had done absolutely nothing up to that point.. Joe is on fire but the Warriors look good tnnight.

doc:

Critter report. 12:30 ugly minutes tonight, ugly. 1-4 from the floor including a missed finish at the rim. The WIZ had J-CRIT bring the ball up court, then ran the offense through NICK YOUNG. He’s got some real learning to do. I don’t see him as developed as YOUNG at this point. Of course, he’s playing PG not SG, but he just isn’t as smooth as Young was last year this time. But he’s got raw potential, like McGEE. I expect both he and McGEE to marry the gym after this season is over.

See out heros won last time out. They’re banged up for the first time. But HAWKS look a lot better than the WIZ with parts missing. They’re learning. Like I said before this season, moves upward are measured in inches in the NBA. Spirals are precipitate and quick. The talent’s pretty even. It’s what the management puts together and the coaching staff gets out of those parts that makes the difference.

Melvin yea now Joe has gone cold. Flip continues to struggle but still gets minutes. lol@ mr g. Yea maybe Law will be punished for not passing the ball quick enough to an open teammate. The way Law is being developed is a joke. It seems like regardless of what positive plays he makes he still cant get on the court for more than 5 minutes. It must be nice to be a vet on the Hawks team. You can take bad shots, be flat out cold, commit turnovers but still you get consistent minutes.

Woody’s rotation is a f@#$king joke. He brings in Law with 2:09 and within 20 secs he already has 4 points on penetration (something the Hawks were not getting very much of. I have never ever seen a coach who will NOT ride the hot hand. This guy has just got to go.
Rick Sund, are you content to ride out this year with the stupidest, dumbest, most foolish coach in the history of the NBA? This is what got you run out of Dallas (and probably Seattle, too). Maybe you can’t see what everybody else sees. This is the reason the Hawks play to a half-empty arena most nights—and we know the Hawks are losing money. Are we paying Woody so little money that he’s the only thing we can afford on the bench?? Heck, check any of the high schools. I’m sure they have a coach available for under a hundred grand—and he sure can’t screw up the team anymore that the Woodster. Wow, I’m really kinda glad we lost cause maybe we can get this dumb@$$ sent outta here. Oops, gotta go. Acie finally hits the floor with :30 secs to go. Yuck. Come home guys and move on.

Hawks weren’t all that great in a “running” game. Running sure didn’t do anything to enhance Josh Smith’s game tonight. Marvin either for that matter. Maybe there’s a reason why Coach Woodson doesn’t play a style more like the Warriors?

23-16 and still in the thick of things. Hope Horford returns soon, he’s the glue.

Chalk this lost up to coaching. Those guys was fatigue. Hats off to the players, they left it all on the court. Ken, you hit the nail on the head. Woodson coaches not to lose. Why does he think he can have a 6 man rotation and be able to win on a nightly basis. It clearly defy logic of winning basketball…

I told you guys, Woodson couldn’t pour p** out of a boot with the directions on the bottom. He’s too stupid to try something new. This guy r-e-a-l-l-y irritates me with his “I’m too scared to try my bench even though my starters ain’t playin worth a damn” attitude. Does he really think cold players can somehow just manufacture a win just because they are vets who have played 3 or 4 years in his 1950’s style offense. Goodness!! Rick Sund, give us Hawks fans something to look forward to—namely a real coach. Hey, Woody did let Acie in the game with 2:00 mins left in the 1st half and he quickly (within 20 secs) got 4 points on penetrations. Oh yea, he did let him play the last 30 secs hoping for a miracle. What a dumb@$$.

As usual, Woodson stopped even trying to coach in the last several mins of the gm. As usual, he turned the gm over to Bibby and JJ, who were ineffective in the 2nd half due to fatigue. Acie could have made a big difference in this gm, with his ability to penetrate against a poor DEF team, and his DEF might have kept JCrawford in check.

It’s called COACHING SCARED AND TRYING NOT TO LOSE.

kirkinga,

It’s hard to win in a running game when you refuse to expand your bench with TWO STARTERS UNAVAILABLE. Where the hell did Solo go? Where the hell was Acie? S**, where the hell was Zaza? You can’t play seven guys (or six and a half considering the abuse Joe Johnson gets on a regular basis) in the second half against a running team.

Answer me this:

Who is the one big man besides Al who can run up and down the court?

I’ll answer. It’s Solo. Where was he? Was he hurt?

Maybe there’s a reason why the Hawks aren’t any better than 23-16. My best guess is that the reason’s name is Mike Woodson. He can’t fight through adversity. Tonight’s game was a prime example. He failed his team. Mo and Flip gave him everything they had. Too bad he wouldn’t let Solo and Acie do the same. Too bad he wouldn’t let Joe get some rest.

It’s just too bad.

The so called coy is a joke. This guy cant make adjustments to save his life.. Bibby and Flip were getting destroyed on the defensive end out there. We continue to jack up jumpers even when they are not falling instead of taking it to the rim. Law once again comes in blows by his defenders and scores a quick 4 points only to not see the court again till the game was pretty much over. Pachulia was having a good game but was left on the bench for what reason I have no idea. How much longer do we have to deal with our coach not being able to make adjustments, ride the hot hand, and come up with more than the iso to Joe.

By jt in dallas

January 17, 2009 1:22 AM | Link to this

Kirkinga, the reason we are not so great in a running game is because Woody refuses to let the team run. I really think the players were lulled into the Warriors type game since they really don’t play defense either, but these young athletic Hawks have not been allowed to play a running game. Let’s see, bring it up, give it to Joe. Stand around and see what happens. If Joe can’t get off a shot, then be ready when he passes it with 3 or 4 secs left on the shot clock. You see, running has never been an option. So there. I STILL say FIRE WOODY, PLEASE!!”

If we had a coach that knew how to inspire this team night after night I think we could go deep in the playoffs. BUT he looks confused and can’t get the team going until the third quarter where we have to play catch up.

Why oh why did we not make that coaching change over the summer? I don’t want to end up the new version of the Sacramento Kings with all that talent back in the day and nothing to show for it.

kirk, i think the only reason we didnt thrive in a running game was because of the lack of identity we have game in and out.. we dont know what we want to be. i dont think we got out in the open floor much tonight, hell, its a bit difficult to run with success with a rotation of 6 guys at most, and a point who lacks ability to penetrate.

Terrible coaching. Horrible officiation (both ways).

Such a catch 22 with the Hawks, the more games we win, the more seasons we’re stuck with a very bad coach. Win or lose it’s clear that he is not brightest card in Zaza’s wallet. Way too quick to calling isolation for Joe and sometimes other players.

Frustrating game.

all is not lost in hawkland, just like the song, “wake me up when the season ends” (hoping we go to the playoffs) in the big picture i can care less about these games but i know we cant keep getting rewarded by the pistons losing, we need to win these games or it will catch up to us, the whole 50 win projection is up for grabs now, I don’t know if we will reach that level, right now it looks like we’ll finish second in the southeast division since magic won again tonight, and now we’ve only won 2 games in ‘09, maybe we need to forget about allstar weekend and focus more on our team during the break, go hawks!

Everyone played hard on both teams. Would’ve been a great win without Mike “Stand Next to the bench with my mouth open instead of looking ahead” Woodson.

we didnt even try to slow the gm down and attack the weak paint with Beidrins in foul trouble, thats what amazes me.. didnt use Z, LoSo, or Acie’s penetration…

ive never rode Woody but geesh, its evident now, he will say, he needs to try to get his bench mins. but tonight he had an excuse to but its like the guy refuses to do so…

GET HIM OUTTA HERE!!! HE’S AN ASSISTANT AT BEST!!!

Not the best game tonight. I hope Marvin will be ok. If he and Al are out, that magnifies the short rotation issues.

Does JJ get to use half amazing, half worn out as his tag line for a tale of two halves? 21 at half, 25 for the game.

Melvin The ASG got outsmarted by Belkin on that 2nd appraisal. Apparently, the agreement said you could protest. It did not say only the side that did not do the 1st appraisal could protest. In effect, Belkin got to put both parameters out there for the range of his potential payday.

I do wonder how they will factor in the time lapse since the appraisals when they finally put some more work in on this ownership deal.

I only saw the 2nd half, but that was quite a pathetic performance. Horford or no Horford, Marvin or no Marvin, the defense was poor and there were way too many wasted possessions. Joe Johnson was awful in the 4th quarter. Bibby made some big shots down the stretch but even he did an inconsistent job leading the break. Neither one made a consistent effort to find Josh Smith down low even though he was often matched up against a smaller player. Worst of all, Zaza gave away at least three or four possessions in the 3rd quarter with his blown layups, fumbling away the ball, and inability to jump even a couple of inches off the ground to block shots. Seriously, if you let Corey Maggette snatch a rebound right out of your hands and lay it up, you should just retire. I highly doubt his INS interview had anything to do with that play.

Oh well, on the positive side, “Notorious” was surprisingly good. For someone who was completely unknown six months ago, Jamal Woolard did a great job portraying Biggie.

Also on the positive side, Detroit got waxed by Oklahoma City (seriously what the hell is up with the Pistons?), so the Hawks are still in 4th place. This little war of attrition for the #4 seed is starting to look a little like the end of last season though, when nobody seemed to want the #8 seed in the Eastern Conference.

PRETTY SOON THE 76ERS ARE GOING TO PASS US AND DETROIT INTHE STANDINGS.

LIKE I SAID BEFORE, THE 76ERS HAVE WON 6 IN A ROW, AND THEY JUST BEAT THE SPURS TONIGHT.

A desperate coach, choking the life out of the team trying to stay one step ahead of the reaper. If Woody was coaching Derrick Rose he’d be faring no better than Acie. 1 turnover & your’e banned for the rest of the game, regardless of the impact you may have on the overall outcome. We can’t run or penetrate because no one will allow Bibby handicap privileges, while one of the most explosive guards in the league resides in Woody’s doghouse.

I WANT JOE GONE

Fell asleep on the game during the second quarter, but saw the game flow, shot charts, etc., and as expected, the Warriors had too much scoring for the short-handed Hawks. You live by the three, you die by it. Maggette with 14 free-throw attempts and 16 boards? Joe Johnson, study the film of this guy and Stephen Jackson for that matter, all day, all night, because as I always stress, you are by far the weakest and most scared player in the league at your size in the paint, and it is pushing me away from watching my team. I am convinced that Joe has lead in one shoe, cement in the other, because he is permanently glued to the floor. There are so many players at his size who I’d rather have, Stephen Jackson being one of them. Joe has peaked in this league, while missing an integral part of a complete game, and I am simplt tired of it. I want the guy gone.

Sure, I believe if Al and Marvin were there, we would’ve won, as the game flow was pretty tight the whole game. Who wants Zaza logging big minutes? Nobody. Ease up off of Woody, folks.

Good job, Josh, but 5 boards and 3 free-throw attempts will never get it done, although you are dreadful from the line. I always applaud the guy when he takes it to the hoop, though, because everyone knows he’s are one of the worst perimeter shooters and dribblers in the NBA. I totally agreee with the comment that Bibby should always demand that he bring the ball up, or at least command the ball away from Josh in transition. Josh dribbling up the middle of the floor is simply moronic. We’ll get Toronto at home. Let’s go, Flip. I expect you to take the ball to the rack, because Lord knows our starting backcourt can’t and won’t. Please be back, Al. Please.

Joe gone…? we would have been out to another sub par 1st quarter performance if it wasnt for his efforts to keep us in it early. i think he gave all he had in the tank from the start, he drove to the basket, looked to finish with contact. i wasnt surprised that he was fatigued come 2nd half..

Could anyone on this board explain to me how the Hawk’s style of play capitalizes on the talent the team has on the roster? On offense? On defense? On extra points?

Somebody needs to seriously rattle Turiaf’s bones next game. That was a real cheap shot he put on Marvin. This team needs an enforcer. That would go a long way towards team unity.

about this: “Somebody needs to seriously rattle Turiaf’s bones next game. That was a real cheap shot he put on Marvin. This team needs an enforcer. That would go a long way towards team unity.”

By next game do you mean NEXT YEAR, when we next play the Warriors again?

Or do you mean that we’ll meet them in the Finals? ;-)

I don’t disagree that we need an enforcer, and that stepping up and defending a teammate IS good for team unity. Let’s just not wait ‘til NEXT year to do it.

After we made that strong charge and took the lead in the latter part of the 4th qtr, some fresh legs and stronger DEF should have been brought into the gm. It’s no coincidence that our key players have started having trouble making free throws, excecuting the OFF, getting to loose balls, rebounds and playing solid DEF in the 4th qtr of gms. These are all signs of fatigue.

At this point in the season, I’m inclined to start looking at our Sund and the SAASG. Woodson has shown what we can expect from him without question. He’s demonstrated he’s a creature of habit and will bend ever so slightly to pressure, but simply cannot go against his nature and the imprint of his mentor, Bobby Knight.

I also see one of the main reasons we end up taking so many 3pt shots and/or rush so many shots before the 24sec clock expires. The PG brings the ball across the half court line and passes it to either the Center or one of our Forwards at the top of the key. Then, The PG goes towards the baseline and curls around a pick just to receive the ball back at or near the wing. This is also why we get so many illegal screen calls. All of this activity, execution and use of the 24sec clock just to get the ball and the PG from the top of the key to the wing. Why do all of this just to get the ball back into the hands of the PG while he’s moving away from the basket? Teams know this and overplay the PG to force him to receive the return pass further out on the wing. At his point, the ball and the PG are too far out to effectively continue running the play. That’s why JJ, Bibby or Flip end up going one on one or calling for a pick and roll to make something happen. Acie has been very effective at penetrating to the basket because he doesn’t waste time giving the ball up and circling around just to receive the return pass. Maybe that’s why Woodson has been so hard on him and ignored the positive contributions he’s made in his limited mins.

Can anyone remember the last time we used a lob or backdoor cut in our, so called, half court OFF? Like our friend CLYDE so pointedly stated, Woodson is who he is and isn’t going to change. That means it’s up to management to make the decisions and/or changes needed to get the most out of all of our players and this team, because Woodson has shown, without question, he’s neither ready, willing or able.
