Don’t be satisfied
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
ORLANDO - Those were the words on the dry erase board in the Hawks’ locker room after Wednesday’s huge win over Orlando.
I have no idea who wrote them. But they couldn’t have done a better job in summing up the directive for these Hawks going forward.
Being undefeated after the first 48 minutes of the season has to feel good. But if the Hawks want to keep the good vibrations rolling, they’ll have to find a new motivation every night.
Staying humble about whatever they accomplish this season (and one impressive road win doesn’t mean much of anything other than one impressive road win) is what will keep this team flowing.
That said, playing the socks off a division rival on its home floor isn’t anything to dismiss. Orlando is the runaway favorite to win the division agains this season and most everyone expects them to challenge for another 50-win season behind Dwight Howard.
Hawks captain Joe Johnson had a sobering perspective on the entire affair after the game, making clear that the Hawks need to remain hungry for more while also internalizing the fact that they are a legitimate team and no longer just some hit or miss outfit.
“My expectations for this season is just to compete night in and night out,” said Johnson, who doused any chance the Magic had of coming back with nine fourth quarter points in the win. “I think that will take care of us making the playoffs or how far we will go. As long as we play with confidence every night and with a winning attitude, we’ll be fine.”
CRANK THAT: Josh Smith is a man of his word.
When he was criticized for his lackluster performance during the Hawks’ preseason schedule, he warned anyone willing to listen that come Oct. 29 he would crank his game up to a high level.
He was game-changer Wednesday night, and not for the obvious reasons (17 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, four steals and no turnovers). Smith’s biggest contributions Wednesday don’t have a column in the box score.
Whenever there was a loose ball to be had, Smith was one of the first players on the floor after it. He set the tone for the Hawks early with two jolting blocks of Howard, sizing up his pal since pre-school both times in highlight fashion.
It was the type of menacing, all-court effort I wrote about in the Hawks preview, the kind of effort that made him such a tough matchup during the playoffs last season.
“That’s when he is at his best,” Johnson said of Smith. “When he is active, blocking shots, rebounding, getting up and down the floor and dunking. We need him flying around like that. When he does that, he is one of the best in the league.”
Smith is also one of the best in the league at settling scores with blocks. His anticipation of Howard’s moves in several instances during the game might have startled some, including Howard. But it was all friendly payback for Howard dunking on Smith (and reminding him of it all summer) during a game in Atlanta last season.
“He dunked on me and got an and one,” Smith said. “He got on me about it all summer and I didn’t like it, so I wanted to prove a point when we got down here.”
PHILLY GOOD: The shouting and cheering coming from the Hawks’ locker room after Wednesday’s game had nothing to do with the big win over the Magic.
That noise was courtesy of Flip Murray, who doubled up on the night with a fantastic showing off the bench for the Hawks and his beloved Philadelphia Phillies finally breaking through and winning the World Series title.
“It don’t get too much better than this,” Murray said smiling. “My Phillies man, my Phillies. They did their job and we did our job.”
Murray said the Hawks came in with the express purpose of trying to smack the Magic first and take the air out of the building. That mission was accomplished almost immediately.
“That was the focus, especially for a first game of the year against a big rival,” he said. “And they wanted it too. The fans came out, they had the building rocking and they had their little introductions and everything, they had it all going. It was our job to come out and take the life out of the building, jump on them early and that’s what we did.”
No one had a tougher night than Magic reserve guard JJ Redick, who got exposed for being the pitiful defender he is when matched up against Murray during one second-quarter stretch.
Murray scored on Redick at will, driving past him, backing him down and shooting over him and treating him like the overrated draft night bust that he appears to be (or at least he appears on the road to becoming - and for the life of me, can the fine folks of this city please stop acting like the guy is some All-Star player? He gets more crowd love than any of the Magic’s legitimate players. It’s ridiculous).
“It’s all about the rhythm of the game,” Murray said. “Wherever the mismatch is we’re going to try and exploit until they do something about it.”

Hells yeah!! That’s the Smith I want to see. IF Josh plays his game NO ONE can stop us! NO ONE!! That kid controls the game on both ends. That’s what makes him so special. He gets his team into the game and takes their team out of it.

I’m glad the locker room recognizes that it was only 1 of 82 real games. The blog is euphoric, but it’s a long way to mid April (and hopefully May).
The hustle was great to see. I never quite understood in past years why a bunch of guys in their early 20s were often beat to loose balls by guys in their late 20s. Maybe this is something they learned in the playoffs.
Woody and Stan van Gundy were almost role reversed last night. The clean shaven head must give Woody some reverse Sampson-like coaching powers. If he keeps this up, I’m in for sending him a can of Edge, Foamy, Barbasol, etc. every week.
Keep it shaved, keep running players through the lineup. Ten played and all contributed. Mario even got in for well more than 3.5 seconds. Joe played well less than 40 minutes in a game that was relatively close with 6 minutes to go in the 4th quarter.
Now he has to add Marvin into the mix. If Woody has this card in his coaching deck, there is a ton of opportunity for the taking. I am hopeful. but it is too early to get carried away.
This could could be really good.

Congratulations to the Hawks. They looked really good last night, very impressive. The best thing about it is that no one really played out of their minds; it looked more like a solid, workmanlike team effort that could be repeated on a lot of nights. For a team that only won 12 games on the road last year, a road win on opening night against the best team in their division has to feel good.

late post on the last blog, edited and re-posted:
as good as they looked last night, orlando helped them out a lot. the magic came out flat and was never able to overcome that first quarter.
watching the game, i still have concerns about the point guard play. bibby had a few horrible turn-overs early. acie played well, but not starter well.
what the team got out of flip last night was the best case for him. he’s always been hot and cold; i just hope he can play that well consistently. ditto for mo evans, solid game at 8/8.
i loved zaza’s play, but i still wish the team had another big enforcer off the bench. while solo looks better with some extra weight, seeing him get pushed around by howard showed the need, in my mind, for another bruising big (and that isn’t morris). regardless, if zaza can bring that level of energy every night, that will be a big step in the right direction for this team.
josh smith played bigger as the game went on (he went into the break with 5 and 5). as sekou pointed out, he was hustling after every loose ball in that second half. he was also in zaza’s face when the big fella was making good on the court plays. i made a mental note of that, because that bodes well for this team.
i think everyone agrees that joe johnson is the team’s leader; but josh smith is this team’s passion. if he can bring it, and leave it on the court each night, we’ll all be talking about all-star josh smith.
if the hawks can play with the same energy level, they can overcome some of the youthful mistakes of which they are growing out. energy, effort and hustle every night is the next step for this club.
will the team win 50? my guess is they won’t, but if they can play consistently - and that means playing through the january doldrums - i can see the team winning at least 47.
championship teams play hard and play, smart day in and day out. while a championship isn’t exactly a may not be a realistic expectation for the hawks team; playing like a champion should still be the expectation.
play like a champion and have no regrets - whether you win or loose.
the hawks, as a team, saw that from last year’s playoffs. hopefully, they don’t forget.

MannyT, Joe had 2 early fouls and sat out a good chunk of the 1st half… that’s why he had fewer than 40 minutes. I expect JJ to go from 40 minutes to 39 this season. Ha.
Our PG play looks to be solid. Not spectacular but solid. And with assists coming from JJ and Josh, that may be sufficient for this team.
Orlando is a jump-shooting team and that works to our advantage. Philly will be a good test because they slash and run. You have to chase those guys all over the floor, you can’t just defend 4 players at the 3-point line and one in the post (Orlando’s offensive set). But you MUST be impressed with an end-to-end victory on the road against a 50-win ball club in their home opener. Doing that isn’t about talent and roster balance. That takes maturity, professionalism, confidence and a bunch of other intangibles that are invisible in a box score.
MannyT, thanks for the link last night. I guess I’ll have to smuggle in the kernels next time I come down for a game. The ASG is trying to cover their legal expenses.

Watched most of the game on TV through NBA LP and I was impressed with the defensive intensity all throughout the game. I liked the ball movement from the staring lineup at the beginning of the game but later in the game the team went back to their old stale offense. Encouraged by the fact that this team has a lot of room for improvement eventhought they played great last night. Great win!

Ball movement was big last night, love the way our guy’s shared the ball……hopefully the JJ isolation days are far behind us.
Josh had a monster game and looks to be in midseason form. The biggest suprise in his stat line was NO TURNOVERS. 17/10/5/4…. I feel like we got a Ferrari for Mustang pricing….
Who starts on Saturday Mo or Marvin…. If these two guys mirror each other offensively and Mo gives you great D,why should’nt he start? The guy harrassed Turkoglu all night keeping him well below his scoring average. With Mo chasing guys all over this allows JJ to be fresh later in the game.Ie his 9 fourth qtr points. I dont think marvin is gonna play that kind of D……..
Props to the Bench Mob AC,ZAZA,FLip -If you throw Marvin in that group they become really potent…. Last night was the best I’ve seen ZAZA play -really agressive and attacking the glass
See Flip score at will-See Mo be an all around nightmare…..Josh Who???
This is only game 1 but i believe we have atleast 44 more wins judging from last night and barring injuries ….GO HAWKS!!!

Hey Y’all:
Let’s Play Some BASKETBALL.
Did you see our Hawks last night. They played with such intensity, offensively and defensively, that it literally stunned Orlando. They took the heart out of the home team with their aggressive style of play. I loved seeing them run and gun. That’s when they are the most dangerous is when they are running and playing and up tempo game on offense and defense. I believe the upgrading of their bench is going to contribute towards the Hawks maintaining such intensity throughout games. The sky is the limit for this group. I say this even more because it looks like those guys are having fun out there playing their skilled positions and performing their roles on this Hawks team. The Hawks are still in “SHOCK MODE”. They are going too make a strong statement this year throughout the league. ANd we as local HAWKS fans are going to love going to some great HAWKS games seeing some high intensity, nasty , sweet playing basketball. Remember, we are still in ‘SHOCK MODE” ; Therefore, “SHOCK THE WORLD” IS NOT OVER. IT IS JUST GETTING STARTED.
SEE YOU AT PHILLIPS ARENA.

What an outstanding start to the season.
Yes it is only one game, but it was a game where the surprise was a win. Few boldly predicted a win last night, none predicted a blowout.
To dominate the Division champs on their floor on a night they hoisted a banner says to me the Hawks have the capacity to challenge for the division this season.
An All-Star worthy performance from Josh Smith leaves you wanting to see more. Let’s hope he can deliver that type of performance consistently.
Looks like a “fail” for the No Childress=No Bench idea.
Can hardly wait for Saturday and the Sixers!

I say we trade Speedy and get cash back and Eddy Curry from the Knicks. He doesnt have to play a full game maybe 5 minutes of each quarter so 20 minutes because of the depth but would be nice to have a real big in the middle and move Horford over to power forward and Smith to small forward. I figure it would be much just to ask Curry to play hard for 5 minutes each quarter?

Yesterday presented the receipe we need to win. First, the Hawks out rebounded Orlando. We got stops. Everybody wants to run. Well, we can’t run if the opposition keeps getting offensive rebounds and scores at a high clip. Our offense is predicated off us playing good defense. I can’t believe I’m saying this…but I agree with Woody. If we play smothering defense, we will win our share of games. Good win, but just one win. Lets keep it going. Woody, if you’re listening, Philly STILL doesn’t have any shooting. Good inside (Brand/Dalembert). Good slashers (Iggy). Good ball distribution (Miller). No shooting. They haven’t had good shooting since them let Kyle Korver go to Utah. We MUST play zone on them! I remember last year, we had back to back games with them. The first game we lost, playing man to man. The second, we won, playing zone. Even with Elton Brand, they still don’t have good perimeter scoring. We must exploit that. Also we must keep a handle on their guards (Williams/Miller). Again, nice win. Lets build on it.

“It’s only one game.”
True. But that’s a slightly incomplete description. It’s only one win. I’d rather be saying that than “it’s only one loss”. Win or lose, it is only one game. But this was a win. It has been said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. If you keep repeating to yourself with each step that “it’s only one step”, you cannot recognize progress. Rather, one should say to one’s self “that is one step accomplished”, and proceed on to the next step. Recognize accomplishment and understand it, or you will not retain the comprehension of what it takes to continue to accomplish things.
The Lakers have a mantra: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence is not an act, but a habit.”
While we are not excellent yet (we have quite a ways to go) the mindset is what carves the path. Humility is great. Pride is necessary in a tempered, controlled fashion. Recognition is the bridge between both.

I thought Flip, Josh, Joe, and Zaza all had tremendous games. Flip was especially exciting to watch just because he provided the offensive firepower we have been missing. It’s nice to see that we have guys coming off the bench (Flip & Mo) who can put the ball in the basket when our starters are struggling offensively.
While Bibby is a clear leg up from Anthony Johnson of last year, I think it’s clear he has lost a step. He doesn’t penetrate like he used to. A clear indicator was the stat Sports South flashed that Al Horford was our leader in assists with 4. I love Big Al, but I don’t want him leading our team in assists.
Another note I made while watching the game was Acie’s confidence in taking the jumpshot. Last year he hesitated, but yesterday he knocked down two huge shots off screens.

A word on how we won.
Orlando didn’t throw us that game. They didn’t “help us out.” We didn’t “escape” with a win. We dominated them for two quarters. It is said that the NBA game is a game of runs. How very true. Here are some of my own non-professional observations of the game that I watched last night:
1)Winning against Orlando has little to do with whether or not you can defeat Dwight Howard. You really just can’t. Horford played him rather well, considering the foul trouble and all. Dwight wasn’t doing anything special until we let him have his way in the fourth quarter.
2)We nearly doubled up the score on them in the first and third quarters, outscoring them 24-13 and 27-15, respectively. Those were the runs we went on. In the second and fourth quarters we gave up very little, being outscored by only 6 and 5 points, respectively. We had a fourth quarter run as well (courtesy of JJ, mostly) to stifle a fourth quarter comeback attempt, as well as a quick couple of good plays by Bibby.
3) One person mentioned that Orlando looked out of sync. Well, timely defense will do that. So will recognizing what a team’s offensive strengths and weakness are. And to break that down:
a)Jameer Nelson is neither a great scorer, nor a great playmaker. In fact, he’s not all that good most of the time. Smith, Zaza, and Horford denied easy alley-oops to Dwight Howard for the majority of the game. Basically, that means neither guy could get going with easy buckets/passes. Our perimeter guys are too big for Nelson, too. He couldn’t get loose for easy shots or easy passes. Nelson only looks good when he is allowed to penetrate, unfettered, to the basket. Or if he’s dropping easy alley-oops to Howard, Lewis, etc. Or if somebody is letting him shoot open jumpers. He’s not a creator, really. A lot of teams recognize this, so Orlando has to counter with using Turkoglu as a “point forward.”
b)Howard still does not know how to draw the double team and pass the ball back out effectively. This is going to take a while for him to learn. Tim Duncan had the same problem when he came into the NBA, but he’s more cerebral than Howard. Howard either scores on the block, or he doesn’t. Playing against a tough (and tough-minded) guy like Horford means he’s not guaranteed a score every time like he is against some teams. When Howard passes the ball back out, the timing is wrong, and the person getting the ball is no longer an offensive threat. That person is then faced with either trying to pass Howard the ball again, passing the ball to someone else, or creating their own shot. Orlando’s guys are jump-shooters. None of them is great at creating their own shot, especially against a lengthy, athletic defense. Although they can be good at it quite often enough.
c)And here is the biggest thing on defense, in my opinion: Controlling Orlando’s two 6’10” jump-shooting forwards. Which is exactly what we did. Howard is going to get his eventually. Just about guaranteed. But it’s those two tall forwards that can put up 18-19 points a night along with a handful of assists, and 6-8 rebounds each a game that will kill you. And they know it. Keep them from getting off and Orlando is left with an ineffective Nelson, and a budding but still a work in progress Pietrus, who is not an offensive creator or stalwart by any stretch of the imagination. And a bench that is not impressive.
More than one way to beat them. Howard gets his, but he can’t beat you all by himself, particularly because he stinks at the free throw line. So he’s not making you pay as much as he could. Limit him at the right times in the game, control those two tall guys who happen to be the two best shooter/scorers on the team, and keep the backcourt from getting into a rhythm of easy buckets or assists. And that’s what we did.

If I remember correctly, Hawks won their first game last year, also. Means nothing, just 1 game. This is same core group, and same lousy coach who won only 37 games last year. Unless the rest of the league has gone down in quality, I see no reason to expect any more wins than last year.

Was it just me, or did anyone else notice that the game had a ‘men at work’ instead of ‘boys playing a game’ feel?? I posted on here a couple of blogs ago that the bench was really going to be an important factor to the Hawks’ season, and I said that based on the last pre-season game against the Pistons. Even though it was a pre-season game, and it really didn’t matter, when the Pistons made their run at the second team, they didn’t panic but responded by working through that adversity.
They did the same thing last night. Although it’s only one game, the bench proved it’s worth last night. When Orlando went on its Flip Murray and Mo Evans were all over the place, scoring, playing defense, basically harassing the offensive player they were charged with guarding. Acie Law looked more comfortable out there last night than he did at any time last season, and it appears that Zaza has regained his form to return to the player he was a couple of seasons ago.
Their body language on the floor was completely different than from seasons past. They may have caught Orlando flat footed, but who’s fault is that? It’s not the Hawks’ fault for coming in and playing the game. That’s what they’re supposed to do. What a great way to kick off this season.
But they can’t be satisfied with just this win; they’ve got to bring that passion and intensity each and every night. There will be nights when the other team will simply outwork the Hawks, but I’m hoping that there won’t be too many of those nights.
GREAT WIN TEAM!!!! GO HAWKS!!!

Yeah Eric, I was hoping to see the old Mike Bibby last night, but saw the same guy who everyone said was hurt last year. He still looks old and slow. I know it’s just 1 game, but I expected more from him. I think we’ll be just as good with Acie at the 1. Flip can back up the 1 and the 2. Evans the 2 and the 3, IF HE’S NOT THE STARTER, which he should be. Judging by 1 game, I say Bibby is a goner at the break, unless we’re top 3 in the East or something crazy like that. No way we’ll pay him what he’ll want. I’d offer 5 mill at the most. Maybe we could get a mid to late 1st for him? But who wants a 30 yr old pg, that misses more shots than he hits, and plays little to no defense? Sorry Bibby, I cant go another day without saying something negative. lol!! I guess I’m a fool for expecting to see the Bibby I saw in Sacramento killing the Lakers. Now if comes out and go’s off for 20-10 a* against Philly, I might change my mind. lol! Great team win guys. And btw, Bibby and Flip are about the same age. Why does Flip look so much younger out there? He’s moving like a 25 yr old. Bibby moves like he 35 or 40. Just sayin.

Ray, great call on Mike “Denzel” Bibby’s acting job in drawing that flagrant foul. Hedo clearly had the ball first and the momentum of the block attempt made his hand hit Bibby’s face. But there was nothing dirty about the play, just a hard foul. But Bibby did a great impression of the flop master, Vlade Divac, and milked the refs into calling the flagrant. And extra free throw and ball possession. Heady play.
skeptic, I’m not sure that the Hawks won their first road game last season. Certainly not their first road game against a division-winning opponent. An opponent that got better in the off-season. I don’t think they did so while missing one of their starters (Marvin). It is just one game but it can’t be compared to last year’s opening win against Dallas (who lost Devin Harris to an injury early in that game that was played in Atlanta).

LIKED WHAT I SAW, LIKED WHAT I SAW! I’ve said it since we acquired them that M Evans and especially Flip Murray were going to make everyone forget about the loss of J-Chill. Don’t get me wrong, Chill did his thing when he was here BUT his play was the glue that kept a team that relied on its starters to much from falling apart. With Evans and Flip’s ability to put up major points off the bench, that “falling apart” should not happen as often now. I was just giddy watching Flip eat JJ Reddick’s lunch and put a “For Sale by Owner” sign on the back of his azz all night. What I like most about Flip is his swagger and I think that has given this young team a boost of confidence they lacked the last few seasons. Now Joe Johnson and Josh Smith won’t have to feel they are required to do everything and will free them to be even more dangerous weapons. With Josh, Joe, Horford, Bibby and hopefully an improved Marvin Williams- this team with Solomon Jones, a renewed Zsa-Zsa, M Evans, Flip Murray, AND an improved Acie Law are going to be hell to deal with in the East. Somebody better warn Boston- we’re coming for round 2 this year!!

Props to Josh Smith who played well last night. Zero turnovers is huge. Last year, the Hawks would start a run and more times than not Josh would kill the momentum with a dumb play. Last night he was leading the charge and in control, and the Hawks were able to sustain runs throughout the game. At one point in the first half, Orlando cut a 15-point lead down to four in about two minutes. But the Hawks took it right back at them and ran it back up to an 11-point lead. That was gigantic, and really said a lot to me about this team.
“skeptic”, I hear you. We did beat Dallas on the road in the first game last year, and I was certainly guilty, as were a lot of other folks, of getting a little overexcited about what that win foretold for the rest of the season. But anyone who looks at this Hawks team compared to last year’s team and doesn’t see a tremendous difference is either blind or doesn’t know basketball. The major difference this year is depth. For once, we appear to have lots of it. Last year injuries killed us. This year, it would appear that we have a fully competent and competitive SECOND TEAM! Barring some kind of craziness, I think we will be in much better shape to handle injuries this year. If we can just play some defense this could be a team that really surprises a lot of people. I disagree with those who keep saying we still have “a long way to go”. On the contrary, I think we’re almost there.
And to “terrell barron”, if things are going well at the break I don’t think there’s any way we’re going to trade our point guard. You just don’t do that. No way. It would be the biggest mistake in history for a winning team to trade away its floor leader at midseason. So, unless this team completely melts down, I believe Bibby is here for the full season. And if it does melt down, then a Bibby trade won’t be the only change you’ll see.

Woody could of at least put Randolph in, when the game was clearly over. Give the kid a few minutes of action Woodrow. Make it so bad, our bigs had 4 fouls a piece. Give him a chance. If he looks lost, pull him. Glad you used everybody else though. Even Mario got to lace up his sneakers last night. Dont tell me we just signed Morris to take Solo’s place on the bench?

aaron b, lacsho, ‘poop go ahead and hand me the trophy in the fantasy league!!
guys, one thing i have been stressin’ all preseason was:
1.hawks have to shoot atleast 45-48% from the field.
2.must shoot 80% from ft. 3.must shoot 40%+ from 3pt 4.must get 42 or more rebounds/night, especially if you are jacking 3’s. lastnight they had 53!
5.have 22+ assists and 14 or fewer turnovers.
win 17 road games and 28 home games. last yr they won 12 away and 25 home games.
the stat line don’t lie.
i am in dc for the week. gonna try to catch a wizards game while here.

And Jo Bling, what FLOOR LEADER? I still see JJ as the floor leader on this team. Bibby takes a few dribbles and gives the ball to Joe. How is that a floor leader? Acie can do that, along with playing better Defense.

1) Flip Murray is a straight up GOON….period……he made Redick look like he was some JV highshcool scrub.
2)Woodson is really impressing me man. Whenever Dwight Howard was out of the game……he wen’t in with the small lineup of Bibby(Or Acie),Flip,JJ,Mo, and Horford in the Middle…..those lineups really sustained and even pushed our lead in a lot of cases.
3) Bibby took advantage of what the defense gave him last night……nothing was really forced……at least we HAVE a PG that commands attention. He’s always willing to fire away……last season with AJ or Lue we had a couple shot clock violations a game b/c JJ was being shut down and no one else could score……not the case with Bibby.

Nice win. I didn’t see the game, but Bibby’s stat line wasn’t too great. Did he look better in the game than his stats suggest?

I agree Randy. Nique’s cliches and platitudes are gonna get old fast.
At LEAST they should switch Nique back to pregame and let Stinger do the games. He gives actual analysis.
I’m not sayin’ that Nique can’t give some good analysis at times, but he uses only cliches even then. He can be right, and still be hard to listen to over a whole season.

We should be shooting nothing but free throws in practice the rest of the week. We wont beat too many teams when we are missing that many free throws. It can come back to haunt you. Luckily last night it didn’t. Bibby looks like the same guy that struggled against the Celtics in the playoffs. He has to get it going or we are better off letting Law start. At least when Bibby is on you can kind of overlook his bad defense but when he is off and not playing defense and committing turnovers then it’s ugly out there. We can beat Philly but we have to play with the same type of energy and determination.

“Itz only one game”………. Meaning we have 81 more to go, so dont get complacent thinking that we have accomplished anything. We have to develope a killer instinct at home as well as on the road. Last night was a great beginning but there is still a long way to go. Opening night last year we beat Dallas …..whoop d dam doo- our final win total was 37 games……
Our yungnz just need to stay focused and play with energy every night….The Boston series was the best thing to happen to this team, going at the big 3 and showing well kinda gave us a swagg/edge,and its carrying over to this season….. I think Woody’s stripes are starting to fade a little lol

I would be okay with a flip/Ac rotation at the 1.

For cryin’ out loud….each game is “only one game”….But each game has to be approached like it is the game.
The path to victory in war is paved by the individual victories of each battle and fight along the way.
Of course the guys have to stay focused and all that. With two more active and useful veterans aboard, along with the growth of our own young guys…I’d say focus shouldn’t be an issue. Besides, Woody will harp on that till the cows come home (and then he’ll drive the cows crazy, too).
Sure, it’s only one win. But we’ve played only one game.
The other 81 games are 81 more opportunities to win, not a measuring stick against our one win….or 81 non-wins, or 81 opportunities to lose. The losing mentality has to go. Why bother trying if you don’t go in believing you can/will win? Play to win, don’t play to lose. The latter does not engender confidence.

Ariose, was that really you that wrote that 1:48 post? Tell me it wasn’t. Bibby played great “D”, huh? Then why oh why did Woodson have JJ guarding him, eh? I mean, that was the plan from the start, or didn’t you read the AJC articles on this game and why Mo started in place of Marvin?
And let me get this straight: with playmakers like Flip, JJ, and Acie out there, we shouldn’t be looking for much from Bibby in the way of assists? Okay, so what do we need him for then? The first thought that comes to mind is hired gunner to help stretch the defense and spread the floor. 4-15 FG, 0-6 3PT. 4 assists (Horford managed that from the pivot). 3 turnovers (not bad, but ol’ J-Smoove and Acie each had 0). I’m not convinced.
Yeah, yeah. I know. It’s only one game. I say give Acie minimum 20 minutes a game and see what he does with it. And let him guard the opposing pg like he’s supposed to, instead of using JJ all night to cover for the starting pg’s deficiencies.

Third, we looked great without Marvin Williams, so when he returns Saturday night for the home opener that will give us another boost

I think we could very well start the season 2-0. We normally play Orlando well. Outside of Howard, I like how we matchup against them. They really don’t have a true (or dominate) PF on their roster to play along side Howard. Philly will be rolling into the ATL after playing the Knicks the night before. So they may have tired legs along with trying to develop chemistry with the new addition of Brand. Those would be two quality wins against teams that are projected to finish ahead of the Hawks.*

I have a feeling Acie Law will be better than Bibby by the end of the season given Woodson allows him enough playing time. Bibby just jacks up trash all night, its sad how far he has fallen since his sacramento days. Acie looks good running the offense, he is fast and is developing an outside shot.

Ray, well they said it was to cut off Jameers passing lanes and stop the lobs between he and Howard but that’s probably part of it too……but they were in a 2-3 zone for most of the night so it was really defense by commitee last night…….everyone stepped up and contested shots……What I meant was Bibbys defense didn’t look horrible or obviously bad(although I try to spin most of my critques in a positive way(you know, “nice”-sounding criticisim) you’re forcing me back to the dark side ray lol)
Fine, I’ll come out and say it then. There is clearly a change in this team and last years team. The bench gives more options for Woody to show if he can or cannot coach. The ability to sit JJ goes along way.We didn’t get to see Marvin in this offense.Nor the real diamond Othello Hunter.Who really shined during Colorado summer league. This bench is the reason why 45-50 games will be in reach.Barring injury, bad shooting stretches etc.Maybe Woody can get the team to show consistent team defense.Which is why he got this job from Detroit. Every road victory should count as 1.50 hopeandexcitement points. Beating a top 5 conference team should be another 1.0 hopeandexcitement points. Beating a team with a dominate big man (given our supposed weakness in the middle) should be worth .50 hopeandexcitement points. Winning a game without a starter must be worth around .5 hopeandexcitement points.
So I’m rating last night’s win at 3.5 hopeandexcitement points.

Their mission was not accomplish:
I thought I’ll take a peek at the Orlando Magic website, just to get their insight into the game last night. This is thier comment about our superstar JJ:
Joe Johnson vs. Magic shooting guards: Ask any coach in the league, and when they name a list of the top five to 10 scorers in the league, Joe Johnson will be listed. He is an offensive machine and brought the Hawks to a place last season where they hadn’t been in a long, long time — the playoffs. He is the center of the Hawks’ offense, so he is the player the Magic must stop. New addition Mickael Pietrus will be defending Johnson to begin the game. He was brought in for his athleticism and defense, and tonight we will get have a great opportunity to see that. He and his fellow shooting guards have a large task in defending Johnson tonight. They must realize that Johnson is a player who is not going to be stopped, but his offensive efficiency must be limited.
It seems that they brought in Mickael Pietrus specifically to guard players like JJ. They thought they had upgraded. I guess they forgot about players like Flip.

Tremendous start. Tremendous statement. Most of the finer details have already been beaten to death (I talked with Ray last night, while these were all fresh ideas, but had my Mom in last night, to hang out with her grand daughter).
This will probably surprise, or disappoint, some folks, but there’s nothing to say that would diminish how well the Hawks played last night. No excuses for the Magic.
I do think that Bibby looked like the weak link. And every game like that will be a reminder, to the ASG, that they’re not getting any kind of reasonable return on his salary (can anyone really suggest that he’s worth 25% of the Hawks’ payroll?).
The other glaring observation leads to a question, rather than a point: are the Hawks actually a better team, with Evans on the floor for 41 minutes, than with Marvin getting those minutes?
I’d say that Marvin now has more motivation than just playing for a sizable extension. I’d say that he’s now playing to prove that the Hawks are better with him on the floor than Evans.
I suggested that Woody might be more reactive, than proactive, in the war of rotations. But, as Ray quoted me, last night, the Hawks, and Woody, imposed their will, and the match ups, on the Magic.
If the Hawks can maintain that kind of intensity, and aggression, on a nightly basis, I’m going to be proven wrong in my prediction.
But it’s one game. And if they’d lost, folks would be very sensitive to drawing too many conclusions.
But they didn’t lose. And it was against the Magic. At their house.
And that’s just huge.
Congrats to the players, coaches and the organization, for a monster opening night.
I want to drink the Kool-Aid. But this isn’t a sprint. So, as a fan, I think following the teams’ approach, and taking this one game at a time, is good thinking…..

The only way Bibby justifies the salary is if there is a major run on those red calf sleeves in the Team Gear stores.
More likely, the size of the salary slot provides several options at the end of the season. That is more than enough of a cap slot to get a serious center. According to Hoopshype, Bibby makes more than Pau Gasol this season. Which magic beans trade from last season do most folks prefer?
Astro Joe I can’t assign HNE points like that. Face it, the more exciting the game, the more points we would want to distribute. After awhile someone would accuse me of being the Russian judge of HNE point distribution.
It’s easy enough to say the HNE leads DND after one game.
Let’s see if anti-Sampson has a few more coaching tricks up his sleeve on Saturday to get the home fans excited.

Well it seems like the Hawks starting five have step it up to another level from the preseason. The second five has playing consistently for a month now, so that leads me to believe Acie and Flip are more than capable of holding down the 1. Bibby helped us get into the playoffs, but keep in mind the Hawks we already playing decent ball (key word decent, not great, but decent) Woody’s rotations was killing us. Since Bibby has one of the highest salaries for a pg, he will get criticize. (That goes with the territory, ask JJ). Bottom line if Bibby was making a third of his salary, I think the criticism wouldn’t be as extreme. Furthermore, his defense sucks, and his shot selection is suspect. This is not a new revelation. Why do you think Sac was so happy to get rid of him? It was a good move for the Hawks, because after this year, and that’s if he makes it through the entire season; his contract comes off the books.

I.MUS,
I have only one guess as to why you’re coming at me with your crotch/jock comments again. (I’ll assume you’re not obsessed with man love). I must have said something you didn’t like. When I posted what I did, it was because normally when the season starts and we win a game, I’m one of the people that says “ehh, it’s only one game.” This year I feel better about the team, more so that I have in years. So, I decided to change my game and go with a “cup is half full” theme. I’m not arguing with you, and we are basically saying the same things, just going about it differently. I’m not after you. Why should I be? If you notice, when I disagree with someone, I address them. I did so with Ariose. I hate to have to keep saying this, but: you’ll know I’m talking directly to YOU when I call your name. Ok? The professor comments are funny. The insult must mean you recognize the literary skills, or you wouldn’t have said so. No, I’m no professor. I could have been one, like my mother is, but I chose a different path after college.
As for your comments about my profession and what not, I’ve been in this ten years. I’ve heard much worse. To my face. It’s all good because I don’t do what I do to please people. And you know nada about my finances (they ain’t what you think, brotha). I’m not here to war with ya. You no likey what I say, you can ignore me, right? You say we’re all on the same team (as fans I suppose). This is a funny way of showing it. But hey, I’m thick-skinned enough not to get all wrapped around the axle about something somebody says that isn’t even directed at me….
Ariose,
I figured that was what the deal was. I’m not hatin’, and you shouldn’t feel guilty. Bibby is getting $15 mil. We need to see some production. But like I said on the last blog, Bibby made some good plays there at the end. I just want to see more, and I’ll gladly give credit where credit is due. Even to Woody (choke, gulp).
What really interests me now is how Marvin plays when he gets back, and how Woody reacts to that in the way of minutes distribution. Could be interesting.

Lacsho,
I think you have it pegged where Bibby is concerned. The more money you make, the hotter the seat you’re on. I’ll say this much, though: can you imagine being a Wizards fan right now (sorry RichBrave)? All that money for a dude that can’t play right now. And then there’s a question of how good he’ll make his team when he is healthy. I wonder if the Magic are still thrilled with the huge contract they gave Rashard Lewis…
On another point, what a sad story with Oden. I sure hope this isn’t how his career goes. He’s got such incredible ability and potential and he seems like such a cool dude. Man, that’s no way to go. #1 but never hit the court long enough to prove it.
Ariose,
you ain’t right, posting as Waffle House. Man you are crazy. By the way, I like ‘em scattered, smothered, and covered. Heh. Been there just enough times to not embarass myself by asking what the hell that means. Ah yes, good place to go when you’re 19…er…21 and drunk as hell (still). Heh heh.

You are right on the money about Bibby’s salary being the target on his back. At a $5M salary, we’d be thrilled.
But how many remember the poster from Sac-town, who warned us just after the trade last year that Bibby usually played 1 great game out of five and that the other 4 would be mediocre to poor?
Well, he was correct last year, and I had hoped that inconsistency was from injuries.
I guess we’ll see over the next four games.
Personally, I think Acie would have a growth spurt if he were put in a position to do so. That said, it’s WAY too early to give up on Bibby. But I will be curious to see if the “1 outta 5” thing is close to the truth.

What to with Bibby? Give him a contract thats what. When healthy he is one the best shooting PG’s in the NBA. Billups and Fisher are better defenders but cant touch him shooting. Paul and Parker are better playmakers but their shot is MIA. Age has Kidd on lockdown. Acie and Bibby can be the PG tandem for the next 3 years IMO. Bibby is well worth 7 to 8 mil for the next 3 years. I was speechless at Josh Smiths play. Was that really him? Also Za Za has to be kept. He has mean streak that comes out that turns him into Helluva pivot man. I would have to say that Mr. Sund did a fine job putting this team together. The Key to this whole ride was clearly visible when JJ was forced to SIT early. He came back fresh in the 4th quarter and could not be stopped. The Magic had the nerve to not double team him also. It would not have matterd though. 30 to 35 mins a night for him and we will get 24 25 points a EVERY night. I really like the makeup of this team.

Look guys, Bibby’s value to the team is not likey to show up in a 14 point win against Orlando. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t extremely valuable to the team. For those who actually watched the 4th quarter, remember the following sequence.
Orlando is making their run and has cut the lead down to something like 7 or 8 points. The arena is rocking as the Magic start the comeback (despite JJ’s strong 4th quarter). Bibby gets the ball (I think after a turnover), drives the lane and makes a perfect pass to an open Horford. Big Al nails the 12 footer and the Magic’s rally is halted. Between the Horford basket and Smith’s 3, the game was over. When it looked like the Hawks may have to hang on by their teeth, Bibby made the right play at the right time. He may not have played like a $15M star during the first 45 minutes of the game but when we needed a heady decision by our PG, he performed. I’m not yet ready to ask Acie to assume that role in that circumstance.
Trust me, when we are in a 4th quarter nail-biter, most of you will be thrilled that Bibby is on our squad. He may not always deliver, but he will have Hawks fans (and more importantly his teammates) significantly more confident that we will pull out a victory than if we were relying on Acie (or Flip) as the end-of-game facilitator. And that’s why, as long as we are competing for a playoff berth, I believe he stays.

Some of you are saying IT’S ONLY ONE GAME OR ONE WIN. I’ll bet the Orlando Magic don’t see it that way. They got their butts soundly whipped in their season opener, at home, against a division rival and on a very special night for their franchise. That goes far beyond just one game or one win. I’ll bet Doc Rivers doesn’t see it as just one gm or win. A gm or win like this, especially the way we played, could have made a difference in at least one of those 3 losses we suffered in Boston during last yrs playoffs.
The Atlanta Hawks players didn’t take the court Wed night hoping for a win. They took the court determined to win and send a message in the process, and they did just that. Other teams now have to figure out if they can/will sustain that level of play or even improve upon it. I believe the Hawks know they can do both, as long as they p;ay DEF and are allowed to continue playing their uptempo style and players aren’t singled out and/or punished like adolescents.
With proper coaching and motivation, this team can be scary good.

I saw the video. I am glad that Kenny respects the Hawks enough to make a prediction like that. No one even cares what Charles Barkley says, he is so ignorant and a complete joke. Last year prior to game 3 of the playoffs, Charles Barkley said something like the Hawks couldn’t even beat the Celtics if Paul Pierce had a broke back and sprained ankle and we all know what happened. All of these basketball “experts” are going to have to eat their words at the end of the season when Hawks finish with a great record.

I.MUS,
No probs bro’. But Dunkin Doughnuts is for officers. Supervisors go with….Doughnut Connection, maaaaaan! Maybe when I get promoted again I can start going to Starbucks. I’m just playin’….
Naw, I’ve heard some really good ones: Concrete Nazis (now you know you’re crazy when you’re calling a black cop a freakin’ Nazi), Fuzz Factor, PBPB (powder blue people beaters), and more that will make you laugh your a$$ off. One time one of my friends dared me to put a “BAD COP, NO DOUGHNUT” sticker on my car…right next to the “thin blue line” sticker. I drove around like that for a week. Got pulled over twice. Who says we don’t profile…LOL! Trust me, it’s all good bro’. And I can poke fun at myself, which is what I like to do with the Blog Crimes Unit.
Your lady knows you pretty good. Mine pulled that sports thing on me on our 3rd anniversary. I was some kind of pi$$ed with her too, and then she up and gets me tickets to the Falcons game. Too bad that was the game back in 2005 when we lost to Green Bay (and their rookie running back…what was his name, Samko Gado?). Still, I had a hell of a time. Yeah, your lady knows how to bring you low and boost you high. Sometimes I think they just like watching us have the same kind of “swings” they have (emotionally) sometimes, just to see if we can handle it. Hope I’m not offending any ladies out there….
Wish I could be at the game Saturday but I gotta riiiiiide and keep my ‘peeps in line (no senseless profilin’ on my shift). But I will be up for some games later on. Y’all enjoy, and I’ll be hollering right along with ya from my couch in my bonus room upstairs (wifey knows I get boisterous, so I gotta go to my spot).

I agree with FemHawk. Glad we get some love from an “expert”. I ain’t worried about Barkley. He’s comic relief and he knows it. I still like him, and he’s just telling jokes. We all know he’s the wild/funny polar opposite of straight laced Ernie. Ernie’s cool too, though.

The Truth’s NBA link
Yes, the only real reason Bibby gets grief is the big salary. How hard were we on Royal Ivey when he used to make those cameos at the start of the 1st and 3rd quarters?
Moment of honesty, how much better would you be at your job if your salary tripled tomorrow? Would you work 3 times harder (unlikely)? The reality is 30x as many people would be looking at how long you took for lunch, how early you came in, how late you left, etc. In meetings, people are more likely to defer to you because you make the big bucks. Not that you are any smarter on Monday, but your check is much larger.
Do you think Josh Smith is is 6x better this season than last? Hopefully not. He’s worth the money, but the timing of the pay does not match the work.
It’s a societal flaw that should not be taken personally, but it is. Bibby is a decent PG. He makes 15 mil because of his past efforts, not his current ones.
We all had to chip in on the financial services government bail out, not because of mistakes they made last month, but many months ago. That’s the way we do it for almost everyone except the rookies. and Woody’s last 2 weeks of coaching on his old contract. Not a shot, just a fact. He’s doing well one game into the new deal.

Nice way to balance things, Manny. And I can’t argue much with it. Makes a lot of sense.
I would say that Bibby and Smith are different circumstances, though. We’re paying for what Bibby used to be. With Josh, we’re paying for what he was, what he is, and what we hope he’ll be. And I know better than to get into a numbers argument with you, you’ll kick my can. But…no Josh isn’t 6 times better than he was last season. And he never will be. But the money to performance ratio doesn’t work like that and we both know it. Just the same as the timing not matching the work.
That, and we’re also paying for something else: mistakes. Errors in judgment. Sure we’re paying a guy for things he no longer will do, not for our team. But it’s the better half oddly enough. The better alternative than what we traded to get him:
Two past-their-prime, half-broken down backup pgs, a seriously busted #5 pick, and a man who could’ve replaced Ahmad Rashad on all those old PopSecret commercials….

Guys you know I love my Hawks but I LOVE me some Al Jefferson. Charles may not be that far off. He said Minnesota will have a better record. The Kevin Love and Miller deal will be huge for the Wolves.
They have a serious bench too. Love, McCants, Telfair, Carney, Smith. I really like this team.
Kenny knows basketball yall. The Hawks will make the playoffs and they probably will move up a couple of spots. No matter how you slice it. We are better than the Magic and they are pretty good.
Back to Bibby, Cuz said it as well as others. He will be here the entire season barring a total meltdown and I can’t see that. We’re too deep. If you trade him you have to take back salary so why would you trade him? If he’s as bad as yall say he is, then who’s gonna want him. He’ll be here the entire season and Law will get plenty of opportunities to show if he’s truely ready for the future.
We will finish 6th in the East and beat the Magic in the first round in 7 games. JJ will make the Allstar Team and Josh will make 1st team All-Defense and finish runner up to KG for defensive player of the year.

Samuel,
The Wolves have potential, that is for certain. But I don’t know…a better record in the West, than the Hawks will have in the East? I don’t know…
I figure big Al Jefferson will be the new 20 and 10 guy. Hopefully Foye remains healthy (keeping Telfair coming from the bench, where he needs to be). Miller is always a help. Craig Smith is tough and savvy. McCants is the mercurial shooter/scorer. He’s kinda like the new Ricky Davis, but I like him more. Still…some tough comp’ out there.
I like your predictions. Realistic or not, they are definitely optimistic. I would like to see Smith make the all-star team, but you know how those politics go. And that’s just what it is, politics.

The Wolves are at the same stage in their development now that the Hawks were in 2005. Yeah, they have some talented players and Al Jefferson will be a star if he’s not one already. Chances are in a couple of years we will see them in playoff contention. They are still going to be pretty terrible this year, and they are gonna have another high lottery pick this offseason.

Lacsho, the Rockets weren’t the only ones slipping. Seems we drafted super shellhead Sheldon Williams ahead of him. Gay is downright scary. And next to him is OJ Mayo? Oh these guys are going to be on the rise…probably sooner than most people think. Not this year, though.
Speaking of guys we didn’t draft, Brandon Roy hit a buzzer-beating jumper to help beat San Antonio. That’s two young teams that will be future West Coast killas in a few years. Portland sooner than Memphis.
Memphis is my West team though. I’m a fan. Have been since the days of Pau, Battier, and D Stoudamire. Big Country was okay, but I always wanted a better center. Looking like Marc Gasol is it.
Anyway, let’s get on these Sixers tonight!

I’m telling you, Orlando’s backcourt is weak. Pietrus will be good someday. Jameer Nelson isn’t getting any better though. And all they have for backup is the rookie Courtney Lee, JJ Redick, and Keith Bogans. Bogans is a passable veteran, but that’s it. They are going to be missing the tougher veteran defense and presence of Keyon Dooling and Mo Evans.
Letting Evans go for Pietrus was a move for the future. He’s not a playmaker and is still very much in the development stages as far as creating his own shot. He never learned that in Golden State because Baron Davis was there and he didn’t have to. Not to mention he didn’t get enough minutes, nor were they consistent minutes.
And as we can see, it’s not all that hard to take Jameer out of his game. That forces Turkoglu into the point forward assignment. Notice how he, Dwight, and Rashard all got theirs….but nobody else was even close to effective. Orlando doesn’t have much of a bench right now. They’re good alright…but they’re not going to do what they did last year, I don’t think.

Sam, which guy are you saying is the Knicks best player…Marbury or Curry?
Perhaps the coach knows something we don’t. I figure the Knicks two best guys were on the court last night: Randolph and Crawford. But the entire team couldn’t shoot for shyt and Philly is actually pretty good. We’ll find out how we match up against them tonight. We’re going to need to jump on them fast and stay on them.
We really need Bibby to outplay Miller, but I don’t see that happening. Miller is so strong. Something tells me Bibby won’t be guarding him too much. Miller could back him down nearly every play.
By Samuel
November 1, 2008 8:14 AM | Link to this
Sautee,
We’ve proven that we are(better than Orlando). They may end up with the better record but we match up with them better.
Ray, I was speaking of Maubury. Curry was injured and is out of shape. Maubury is in the best shape of his career and was their best player in preseason. They all of a sudden inactivate him, just to prove a point. D’Antoni and Walsh will have some problems with the fans in NYC.
They’d better stock up on the sleeeping pills
Ando, I see yo boy, Bargnani picked up some weight. He actually showed a couple of post moves last night. Boy does GS miss my boy Montee. Get well soon.
The game tonight will be tough. EB is a total beast on the block. I say we let Josh guard him mostly then give him a break by rotating Al on him with our big line up(ZaZa/Solo,Al,Josh/JJ,Flip,Mo). Bibbs will need some help tonight on Miller but we should be ok. The back2back should help. Also, watch Sweet Lou Williams tonight. He’ll be geeked up for the home folks.

Talking about bad contracts, Marbury is makikng 21.9 mill this year. Now that is outrageous. There trying to get him to take a buyout. The screwed up part is, they let him play all preseason with the assumption he was going to play for them this year. The knicks will suck for a long time. Karma is a mother.
Ray The Majic’s bench is suspect. You’re right about the guard play. They’re going to miss the veteran guards.
I know this maybe a bias statement, but I believe the Hawks cause match up problems for 85% of the league. The Lakers are the present and the future if they can keep that team intact.
Tonight the Brand and Smoove matchup will be pivitol. You might see a changing of the guards. If Smoove is serious about making the allstar team, it’s nights like tonight, where he must show and prove. Smoove causes problems for every power forward in the league, if he plays consistently.
Somebody has to stop Andre Miller. Like others have mention, Philly’s outside shooting isn’t the greatest. Look for Reggie Evans to play real agressive while he’s on the floor. I agree the Hawks have to jump on them from the start. Hopefully, Phillips will be packed tonight.

Ray, Yeah Bibby does need to step it up….More than anything, i’m concerned about his ball handling……very shaky…compared to a lot of other starting guards. But i’m defenetly glad he’s on out team, that’s for sure.
The Marvin question is driving me nuts. Will Marvin ADD to our success?, Will there be a drop off in Defensive intensity with Mo going back to the bench?
And how Will woody distribute the minutes? Will Solo be the odd man out now? Or will he continue with his new aproach and actually play our guys?

Guys just here me out.
I really think we can start the season 7-0. Think about it…..
1)If we can knock off philly tonight(We Can’t loose the Home opener…..have you geys been reading those Orlando articles? Embarrasing…).
2) (Road Game)The Hornets have both Tyson Chandler and Peja out with ankle injuries……and they already weren’t the same team without Jannero Pargo….That’s a W for sure.
3)Then we come Back HOME to face the Raptors. Calderon is OK but T.J Ford used to give is hell(Talk about a pain in the arse). Not to mention that Jermanine O’Neal and Chris Bosh are both around the Same size as Smoove and Horford, So thats a wash….and collectively we have better guards/Wings than they do(let’s not forget about the home crowd Boost either.) Another W.
4) Now things get fun, we go on the road to face Oaklahoma City. If we play like we did against Orlando that’s a W. I think the Hawks have learnd to stop playing down to your level of competition…..Russel Westbrook could cause problems though. He’s like a 6’5 version of T.J ford.
5) Then we have a back to back……first is Chicago…..With the way we’re playing, that’s an Easy W (Even IF Drew Gooden goes all Schizo on us and starts dropping rediculous buckets that he’ll never hit again in his life lol.)
6) The Second of that Back to Back is Boston…..our 8th game of the season(Logically thats where the streak should end)….but you never know.
RISE UP!!!

keys to victory: must shoot 45% from field, shoot 80% ft., 43+ rebounds, shoot 40% from 3pt, have 25asst, and fewer than 14t/o. they also need to get 100 pts.
if they get atleast 4 out of these 7 stats it will increase our odds of winning

Samuel,
It’s obvious the Knicks are trying to cut bait. I feel like they’re going about it all wrong. Another friend remarked to me that Steph has done everything they asked of him, but they’re still not going to let him play for them. I don’t know what the inner workings consist of or what’s going on behind the scenes, but it looks to me like the plan was to put Steph out of the picture from the get-go. And Steph is playing it right: $22 mil to sit on your butt after you’ve done everything right by your new coach and team….I sure hope Steph keeps in shape and is given the opportunity to help out another team. Whatever happened before…there is three sides to every coin. Their side, your side, and the cold hard truth. Steph might seem like a hardhead, and he might be a hardhead, but he wasn’t the only hardhead in NY. There’s still one big on there, and he’s the richest one….
Like Lacsho said, karma is a mutha…
Ariose,
Who you talkin’ to? I still got a lead foot, but a sneaky lead foot (and a nice shiny gold badge, but that…ahem…has nothing to do with this). I own a corvette. One of my buddies with another P.D. drives one of those Hemi-equipped suped up Dodge Chargers as his patrol vehicle. He is all the time buggin’ me, wanting me to take the ‘Vette out on I-95 with him in the Charger, and see which one outruns the other. I keep telling him hell no, we gon’ get in trouble with his Chief and then with mine. Damn hardhead. He keeps coming up with the “perfect time” to do it. He knows I’m tempted to do it, too…Although we’re both good behind the wheel, it could turn into the ugliest of situations. I can see it now: looks like a car chase but isn’t. Then one or both of us smashes into a citizen minding his/her own business. Yeah. Ugly. That’s my boy and all, but sometimes I wonder why the devil they gave his a$$ a badge….

Ariose, I hear ya. But look who couldn’t take the Hornets out with Chandler on the bench. Just look back a game and see. These guys are tough. We just have to play them, not think we can beat them ‘cause this guy or that guy is out. They are tough. And size isn’t the problem against Toronto. It’s skill and foul trouble. Both O’Neal and Bosh can get you into foul trouble fast. We have to try and avoid that.
And we’re going to get a firsthand look at Bargnani, who looks better than he has before. It will be interesting.
Still, as you pointed out: we should look to beat them our way, and not focus on what they’re good at.
Ant Banks, good point. I hadn’t thought about that. I hope Josh goes “Smoove off” on ‘em! Man, I hope I get off work on time so I can rush…er…drive safely home to watch this. Gotta tell the wife to hit the button on the DVR upstairs juuuuuust in case.

We have to come out tonight with the same intensity that we did againt the Magic. The Sixers are not a great shoooting team but they rebound well and play some nice defense. Bibby is going to have trouble guarding Miller so we are going to have do something about that matchup.
The Hornets will still be a hard team to beat even with those injuries. It is as if Chris Paul plays us harder because we did not draft him. I think the guy looks foward to playing us every year.
The Raptors will be tough because they shoot the 3 very well and for some reason we are horrible at defending the 3 pointers. The last two years I think we have given up more open look 3’s than any team in the league. Orlando had a bunch of open looks. The Raptors lead the league in 3 point percentage last year if im correct. We are going to have to play better defense on the perimeter. We cant give teams that many uncontested shots.

Yo, Sam
About this:
*Sautee,
We’ve proven that we are(better than Orlando). They may end up with the better record but we match up with them better.*
How, if we are the better team, do they end up with a better record? The last time I checked, the league goes by wins and loses to seed the playoffs. I’ll admit that we give them matchup problems, but the true measure of who is the better team has got to be the won-loss record. As Herm Edwards said “That’s why we play the game!”
We were better than the Magic on opening night, and that’s promising, but let’s not gild this lily quite yet. Stay REAL.

Ariose, I am feeling you on trying to shoot for 7-0 but lets be realistic here. Thats a weeeee bit of a stretch, maybe 5-2 but not 7-0. On paper we may match up well against our opponent, but the problem the other teams know how to execute better even when they are down a man (or two).

My concern with big gms like tonight isn’t with the attitude or concentration of the players. I’m more concerned with how Woodson will respond. If we struggle at some point, will he revert to his old habits, or comfort zone, our allow the team to play through their difficulties or take charge and slow everything down. I he stays the course, we will be a serious player in the Eastern Conference.

Bibby finally has his shooting stroke but Josh and Marvin are giving us nothing. We are getting destroyed on the boards. Might be time to give Randolph some burn. We have to go bigger and keep them off the boards. Our defense is terrible. We are settling for way too many jumpers. Woodson has to come out and make some adjustments.

WOW,
Philly is good but they can’t shoot like that the whole game, HOPEFULLY. We need to cut down on our 3’s,except for Bibby, he’s the only one hot from the outside. Marvin aint giving us nothing. Sit his a$$ and leave ZaZa in. Also, try Solo on Dalembert. He’s killing us on the boards.
We’re still in the game though. I thought we were gonna get blown out there for a minute. Good job hanging in there guys. Let’s go Bibbs. Keep us in the game.

Finally some signs of life from our guys.
Josh Smith is pressing too hard. He’s trying his damnedest to be our second best player, but I can see at this last timeout that he knows it, and knows he needs to calm down. Get the ball to the guards while going up the court, and stop turning that damn ball over. You start the break with the rebound. Then you finish it when you get the ball back, not by trying to outrace your entire team to the other end. It’s not them you have to beat, it’s the opposition.
Bibby is helping big time by getting open and hitting the shots. Our guys (especially the bigs) are helping him by getting him the ball when he is open.
Philly is running more than we are. That’s ridiculous. We’re better runners, hands down.
We need to contest more shots. Stop making Iggy and Elton look even better than they already are!

Remember last game I said SONGAILA wasn’t given enough PT.? Inserted with 6:54 to play in the second. 16-0 run follows. All the points were generated from the defensive end. SONGAILA was brillant clogging the middle and playing the baseline. Extremely active. He won’t get the credit because BUTLER and others will get the headlines, but his interior play made the difference. Ya’ gotta’ move your feet on D. Before that DETROIT was breaking down the defense from the top of the key and no one (THOMAS, BLATCHE) was clogging the middle or stepping out from under the basket. DETROIT is a team he plays well against. WIZ up by 1 at the half. Later.

We are catching hell with Dalembert’s tall a$$. He and Brand work well together.
We need Josh back in the game, though I hate to say that (he needs his rest, too). I wish Marvin would quit with the invisible man act. Then again, this being his first game of the regular season perhaps I shouldn’t be too hard on him. But a pro is a pro, and we need PRO-duction from him.
Joe Johnson has all-star written all over him.

4th quarter…gut check time. Contest all shots, clog passing lanes, drive to the basket and draw fouls, dive for loose balls, hold on to the ball, and make it too hot for them to hold. Go after every stinkin’ rebound that comes off the rim or backboard. We can win this, we’re good enough. We just have to do it. NOW. We’ve got to send a message to the conference and later to the league. And we have to do it NOW.

Matt = niremetal,
What’s with the name, dude? I think you’re back to being the one and only Matt. But anyway, the +/- thing is too confusing. In fact, it often makes NO sense.
How does he do it? How does he do it? One minute he literally clangs the 3-ball, the next minute Josh is swishing it like it’s old hat. How does he do it? I keep cringing, but it seems like when it’s a do-or-die momentum situation…he makes it. Well, not always. But enough to kinda tease you.
Bibby just gave them a bucket. You numbskull, that’s a momentum killer! Bad pass!
I’m loving Zaza’s battling. We so needed this from him. He’s a huge help down low. And he’s getting us big buckets, too.

Can’t blame Josh for taking the last 3 he made. JJ passed it right to him after drawing the defender away from him. Still, I’d like to see him drive in and hit a mid-range shot at least. All the same, I’ll take 2-4 from beyond the arc….but it’s like riding a roller coaster. You know there’s a dip coming, but you may not know when.
Come on guys, we can do this. Take ‘em out.

Great, great win for the Hawks tonight. Disappointed that Marvin did the invisible man routine. I’d like to hope that it’s just because it’s his first real game back after the preseason injury and 1-game suspension, but I have my doubts. Prove me wrong, Marvin.
But JJ, once again, was JJ. Smoove played like Marvin for the first 3 quarters, but came alive when it counted. Bibby proved why he was the difference for this team last year. Hopefully this a good sign of things to come.

What a game. Noticed served to the Magic, and now the Sixers. We’re going to be in the thick of things if we keep doing whatever it takes to win. No more lucky games, no more BS reasons for winning. Just straight up gritty and dirty.
I missed part of the game (got home late, wouldn’t you know it…rough day) but I’ll recap what I did see from about halfway through the second quarter till the end.
The Backcourt:
Joe is one big, bright shining star. He put a superstar sized hurt on Philly. He was a straight up predator. Bibby didn’t shoot great, but dangit if he didn’t shoot good enough. He also was mostly very solid with the ball, and made some good plays. I’ll never look sideways at 19 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals. That helped a lot. His defense was better, and he was more active than I’ve seen from him since I don’t know when.
Flip had agood play at a crucial time, but he wasn’t out and about much. But it wasn’t needed with JJ being on fire. On the other hand, Acie was playing the invisible man for 18 minutes.
The Frontcourt
As stated before, Horford is slow to get going in the post, allowing the defense to get set. I have no doubts he will improve here, though. In the meantime, he continues to make good decisions with the ball, again collecting 4 assists, defending well, and grabbing boards with gusto. He did sruggle some on the boards against the Dalembert/Brand combo, with Youg and Evans in the mix as well. Meanwhile Zaza was once again a nice boost off the bench, grabbing 8 boards, defending quite solidly, and just banging in general, while adding some buckets. What a differece he’s making!
Josh Smith still presses too much sometimes, and he proved it with a team-high 5 turnovers. But, he did not hang his head, fighting alongside Horford for a team high 11 rebounds, and finally getting it going some on offense to finish with another double double, 3 steals, 3 assists, and 2 blocks. Still worried about the outside shot, but can’t argue too very much with 2-4 from beyond the arc. He needs to develop a midrange shot so that he can use that to fake defenders and use his big, deceptively fast first step to drive past them. That will also help him when he wants to dribble drive. His dribble is still a weak spot, even though he’s trying a little shake and bake stuff here and there. Unfortunately, he is only shaking himself loose from the ball…only too often. Gotta work on that. Meanwhile Marvin was the second invisible man, though he grabbed 5 boards, all of which I think were in the first half. He did block 2 shots, but only scored 2 points. Less than 20 minutes played, and his bench counterpart, Mo Evans, was no better. We need more production out of that tandem than 7 points, 6 boards, 2 blocked shots, 1 steal, and 1 assist.
However, we won, and that statistic counts the most. We got outrebounded pretty handily for most of the game before tightening up here and there in the 4th quarter. We can do better, but there is something to be said for size issues. And yet, effort can overcome that in many cases, if effort is given.
We did hold them to a slighly lower shooting percentage, and forced them into 18 turnovers, which is something we need to continue to do to teams. And we only had 9 turnovers ourselves, with one frustrated player accounting for more than half of those. To note: our entire second unit had 0 turnovers. That is excellent in anybody’s book.
Great job by our guys closing that game out. And you know what? Woody called some good timeouts and had them coming out with solid plays. And for what seems like the first time, I saw signs of actual encouragement from him on the sidelines, less scowling and pulling the WAF. There’s hope yet.
Well, time for the chorus of “it’s only two games and we started the season 4-1 once” comments. Hey, I ain’t mad at anybody. Old habits are hard to shake. But I feel different about this team. They are learning to be winners. And now they’re not just learning the hard way. They’re learning the winning way.
Go Hawks!

These are the types of gms we would have certainly lost last yr. Good teams can win gms when they’re not playing their best. Good teams don’t get down on themselves when they fall behind big. Good teams are capable of doing what it takes to overcome deficits and win close gms. So far, we’ve proven we are a good team.
After witnessing the teams 2 season opening gms, how many of you still feel Hawks players are foolish for believing they can win 50 gms? Do you now think we’re good enough to add 13gms to last yrs total? Our starting team is strong enough, and our bench is versatile enough that we can defeat Philly with Josh, Horford and marvin having subpar gms.
Phiily definitely upgraded their starting lineup, but we upgraded our entire team, which allowed us to take their best shot and come out victorious. I know it’s still early, but how many of you preseason skeptics still feel we’ll struggle to break 500 and/or won’t meke the playoffs?

Yea ray Horford takes to long to go into his post moves. We need a legit big man coach here to help him and Smooth with their low post game. I wish Horford would use his quickness more often to beat bigger guys off the dribble. He handles the ball pretty well and has the quickness to do so. We have to try and snag Clifford Ray away from the Celtics. I think the guy would do wonders with Josh and Horford. Hopefully Marvin wakes up for the next game. A lot of our guys struggled tonight but we battled the whole game and came away with the victory.

Well, after two games (only one for Marvin), it would be premature to name Bibby an untradeable asset, Acie a non-contributor, and Marvin a bench bound buffoon.
Marvin needs to attack the basket and get to the free throw line. Those off-balance, fade away side-stepping jumpers? Leave that to JJ. He knows how to make them in bunches.
Acie has to attack the basket as well, or his outside shot won’t fall for him as much as it could. I’m not sure, but his problem seems to be timing. He’s not getting warmed up, because when he comes in the game, somebody else is already hot. Probably just coincidence. But…he looks solid on defense. He’ll get there, I believe. He needs to get into a rhythm quickly. Attacking the basket helps establish that.
There’s no doubt Bibby’s shooting helped. He’s still not impressing with his shooting percentage, and his assist/turnover ratio still isn’t anywhere near elite level. But the guy rarely hurts you when he’s got the ball. He has to play the level of defense that he played tonight (or better) on a consistent basis. Be more aggressive on traps and shot contesting. Don’t just defend the passing lanes. Go to the hole more, draw fouls and defenders, which will spring other guys free. We should be running more pick-and-roll with him and guys like Horford, Smith, and Williams.
In other news….
Ariose, the Hornets are no joke. They just stepped on Cleveland, who had a full and healthy squad…without Chandler or Peja. Not a pushover by any stretch…we better play “A” game with these guys.
Rose looks like he’s gonna drop damn near 30 on Memphis. This kid can really ball.
Indy is no joke either. They just put it on Boston…without Mike Dunleavy. Hmmmm.

To quote Newman and Redford, “who are these guys?”
What’s not to like about these first two games?
Bibby’s shooting, A/T ratio, and the A/T ratio of the opposing PG’s, in the first two games, still reinforces that dude isn’t long for this franchise. Seems like folks who want to defend him are confusing the contextual implications of his expiring salary with criticism.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve never said Bibby isn’t decent. I’ve just said that his salary, given the history of limited ASG payroll commitment, is prohibitive for him to stay in Atlanta.
And it goes without saying that his production isn’t anywhere near the expectation his salary would generate. Again, it’s not like this opinion is isolated: he’s been, on average, the 17th point guard taken, in ESPN live fantasy drafts. That statistic has its limitations. But a guy who has one of the 20 highest salaries in the NBA should be a star.
And it’s not Bibby’s fault that the ridiculously rich Maloof brothers signed him to such a monster contract.
But his numbers, after the first two games go like this:
FG-35% 3-pt FG-21% A/T ratio:1.6/1
As a fair point of reference, the assist to turnover ratio of opposing PG’s, in the first two games, is 4.4:1, or 22 assists to 5 turnovers.
Somebody mentioned Marbury’s expiring contract, of over $21 million, as some type of justification for the Hawks spending $15.5 million on Bibby. But the Dolan’s are a nonsensical point of comparison, as they’ve been running a payroll that is twice that of the ASG’s commitment. Sure Marbury is overpaid, but what’s that got to do with Bibby? And how does the Dolan’s financial outlay have anything to do with the far less capitalized ASG?
Look, I’m not, nor have I ever, called for the Hawks to trade Mike Bibby. What I have done is consistently predicted that the ASG WOULD trade Mike Bibby, based on their finances and the fact that Bibby’s contract is the difference between them covering a payroll that is within shouting distance of their historic outlay, and them spending somewhere between $7 and $10 million more than they have ever spent, since owning the Hawks.
So posts that grab a solid Bibby outing, and mock the idea of trading him, continue to miss the essential perspective that, short of Bibby emerging as one of the top-five PG’s in the NBA, there is no realistic logic that the ASG will pay him his full salary for the completion of this season.
Now, if they do, then they’ve defied historic logic. And that’s completely within their control and right. But the math says Bibby can’t justify his cost.
Not much from Marvin tonight. That’s an issue that will percolate beneath the surface, unless he rapidly emerges. Because he has to quickly justify his draft slot, after the first 3 years, if he wants the kind of extension his peers received. And he has to perform at both ends, because there’s an argument that the Hawks are a better team with Mo Evan on the floor, after the way they played, defensively, against the Magic.
It will be interesting, after 15 or 20 games, to see if that argument has any statistical merit.
All that aside, how about them HAWKS?!!!!!
2 and OH, against two teams projected to easily outpace them in the East this season.
What’s not to like?????

Yea I wouldnt mind if Marvin attacked the rim more often but his ballhandling is so bad that most times he fumbles the ball away or runs somebody over trying to get to the rim. We need to get him in a ballhandling camp or something. I stil agree with the scout who said Marvin needed to work on driving to the basket. The guy is just way too big, long, and athletic to settle for jumpers. If he was a better ballhandler I think he would be a better player. He would look so much better getting to the hoop if his handles were a lot better. Is there a way he could work on his balance too? He looks so unbalanced most of the time. He has all the tools and the potential but I just dont know if he will ever fully blossom into the player some thought he could be. It’s up to him now because he is being given every opportunity to become better.

Quite an impressive win by the Hawks today. Y’all may not have realized it, but the X-factor in today’s victory was…
Me.
Yeah, when I got to my seat after haggling with one of Atlanta’s less brilliant scalpers (who the hell tries to sell upper level seats for $50 a piece halfway through the first quarter?) the Hawks were down by 23. Clearly my presence in section 303 was what turned the game around from that low point in the game.
Seriously though, when I got there it was looking pretty bleak. Josh Smith was playing like he had been hanging out with Josh Howard before the game, the Hawks as a team were looking really lazy and the Sixers were beating the Hawks to every loose ball.
But we clearly had the best player on the floor today. If Joe Johnson keeps this up he could be starting in the All Star Game, and I couldn’t be happier especially since Joe is on my fantasy team. Josh’s high apparently wore off during halftime because he came out in the 2nd half making a lot fewer dumb plays and a lot more of the great plays that make him so valuable. Even though the FlipMo Squad didn’t make a huge statistical impact it seemed like the defensive pressure from Flip had an effect on the Sixers’ guards. Zaza was outstanding for almost the entire time he was in the game. The only players I was totally unimpressed by were Acie and Marvin — we’re gonna need a lot more aggressiveness from Acie as we go on in the season, and although Marvin seems more active on defense he’s as indecisive as ever with the ball in his hands. Dalembert’s length was clearly bothering the Hawks on many occasions as well.
Still though, judging from this game and the previous one it really seems like the Hawks did a lot of growing up during that playoff series. They are so much more confident and effective in crunch time now.

CP, we could use a guy like that, though I don’t know if we would pay what it took to pry Clifford Ray away.
I think both guys (especially Horford) will naturally get better in that area, though. But without a good teacher, it tends to take a good bit longer.
Ken, well….reasonably speaking, how do you expect people to feel about the playoffs and a season win total….after just two games. There, see! You went and made me say it! I just got away from that and you made me go back, blast you!
Just kidding, although you did derail my “cup is half full” binge. Dammit….but seriously. We haven’t been smacked in the mouth good yet. We’re better, no doubt about it in my mind. There are new speed bumps in the road to come though and we have to see what happens when we lose one. Or two. Or more. Or if we can have bigger winning streaks than we do losing streaks. If we do, we will definitely play better than .500, I think. And it will be the first time in many years. Definitely the first time for this team and coach.

Just got back from the game. This games ranks right behind the game six playoff game. I’m going to do a full recap tomorrow.
Thaddeus Young hit 17 first quater points. The boy was lights out. He was on fire from the 3pt line.
JJ is a beast what more can I say!!!!!!
Bibby had a nice game; I guess he’s trying to earn that money. He had actually played some good defense in the final minutes. As much as I bash Bibby, I must say he owns the 4th quater.
Acie had a decent game. His defense was on point. He still a little passive on offense at times.
Mo and Marvin were off. However, Marvin had some key rebounds in the 4th quater.
Woody did a excellent job tonite. I don’t know what he told them at half-time, but they were a different team in the second half.
Flip will help us win some tough games. I’m convinced he can get pass anybody.
ZaZa played one helluva game. He’s back I have nothing but respect for this guy.
Horford still needs to work on his offensive game. He doesn’t look comfortable posting up. In time he’ll be nice though.
If we had a legit 7 footer banging down low, I’d say this team is ready for the championship. That’s the only thing we’re missing.
Elton Brand is a beast. His post game is flawless. Hopefully, big Al will get there.
JSmoove scares the hell out of me when he shoots that three. Smoove is the catalyst on defense.
Philly is nice, but I knew they couldn’t keep the hot streak going the whole game. If they had another 3pt threat besides Thaddeus, they would really be causing havoc.
I’ll end here.

You are the best; I got nothin but love for you. Your son is mad cool..

One more thing: I don’t mean to hate, certainly not after a game like the one he had today, but Bibby still has not proven he should be kept around long term. I agree with Ando about the salary implications of keeping Bibby being way too high for the amount of production he provides. For all the big shots he hit today, he’s still a wealthy man’s T-Lue — a guy who’s not incredibly quick anymore, not that great on defense, not all that big for his position, not that great anymore at setting up other players with easy shots, not all that great at penetrating the defense, but who will knock down big shots when you need them and provide a steady hand at the point. I obviously realize he’s a hell of a lot better than Lue — what I’m saying is that they both have pretty much the same skill set, except Bibby’s skills are better. I don’t think an over-30 player with his skills is the long-term solution for this team.
Then again, Acie Law has done nothing to prove that he is either. Hopefully he does because if not it is going to be really hard to get reliable production from that all-important PG spot going forward. I’m thinking maybe it might be better for the Hawks to simply keep Bibby around for the season and let his contract expire to free up cap space to pursue a PG and further depth in free agency next summer, rather than trading him when Acie clearly is not ready to handle the load.

Ando,
I have to think that the idea of trading Bibby may also be leaning heavily on whether or not the ASG expects a favorable outcome in the legal battle come February. I mean, don’t people at this level of financial battle usually know or have a solid idea of what’s going to happen before it actually does? If the team is doing well, Bibby is doing well, and these guys get the “inside” tip that things are going to go their way, in more than one way, then they may be willing to allow Bibby to stick around for the remainder of the season, cashing in on the expiring contract so to speak, at the end of the year.
However, if they were to think that the court’s decision wouldn’t be so favorable, and/or they might be in for a much more losing situation where they have to buy Belkin off for ridiculous cash, while losing even more money…well, I can certainly see Bibby going, but only in the right, cash-saving deal. And that means, we don’t improve in such a deal most likely. What will improve is the ASG’s financial situation. Hmmmm. Don’t know about this one.
A more successful team is a more sellable team, too. Whether it’s the ASG selling the team off, or the ASG selling the team to the fans (more revenues, packed home games). We’ll see.
Like you say, historic logic. But one wonders just how reliable logic is around these here parts….

Ken, “how many of you still feel Hawks players are foolish for believing they can win 50 gms?”
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’ve never thought the Hawks players are foolish for their expectations. In fact, I think every professional athlete, in every professional sport, should enter their regular season believing they can win their sports’ championship (look at the Tampa Bay Rays).
But what does that have to do with the opinions of outsiders?
2 and 0 is a good start, just like 4 and 1 was last year.
And the nature of these first 2 wins is that much more impressive. But talking trash, like these guys are now a cinch to win 50 games, or exceed all expectations, is kind of pointless.
If the players want to start talking some trash, then they can deal with the implications. But it’s a little early to be crowning these guys, or acting like skeptics never had a reason for their position. As someone pointed out, Vegas pegged the Hawks W/L over-under at, variably, the high 30’s. These folks aren’t in the business of being ridiculously wrong.
So enjoy a great start, and hope for these guys to shock the world. But don’t start chirping like the season is over, after 2 games.
Woody is still the coach, and the ASG still own the team.
Take that for what it’s worth……

Sam, draft picks have cap implications. So, for discussions’ sake, we could take a late first, and a couple of seconds, and cover something like $4-5 million, without having to ever spend it. Or we could take picks, and the rights to a previously drafted player, who projects to stay in Europe for the next few years.
The fact is that we could realistically package up Bibby, to a team that wants him for the playoff run, for a serious reduction in this years’ outlay (again, I’m going on the subjective belief that the ASG has no intention of spending much more than their previous high of $55 million; if I’m wrong, then my point is, well, pointless…).
If you want to make a position out of the “record of those opposing point guards”, is it not within reason that the Hawks would have won more easily if the A/T ratio, of both teams’ point guards, was even?
I mean you ARE the manager of a league that utilizes A/T ratio as a category.
So, unless I’m missing something, you find the statistic compelling enough to customize it into your annual fantasy league, but selectively choose to be dismissive of that stat, as it relates to one of the most overpaid players in the NBA?
Sounds like Sam……………..

I’m talking about the real thing Ando. Fantasy league is just that, Fantasy. In real life, you win on the court. Not with a keyboard and a mouse.
Again, if Bibby is that bad, who’s gonna give up a first and a couple of 2nd round picks? And that would still leave 8 mil. So that’s a dang good starter, a 1st round pick and (2) second rounders for a guy who is old and slow?
Face it Ando, you’re wrong again. Bibby will be here and the Hawks will make the playoffs.

I am glad Sam is using assist/turnover ratio though, it is a lot more logical than turnovers (which is standard for fantasy leagues) — this way you don’t have to consider benching good players in order to win categories at the end of the week.
Also, a suggestion to the DASG for the future — when you get those middle school marching bands to bang their drums in the upper deck, please try to locate them away from paying customers, so as not to destroy their hearing for years to come.

Ray,
To answer your question to Ando - with trial judges in commercial litigation, it can really, really vary on whether the parties know the outcome of a proceeding before the opinion is handed down. Some judges just let the clerks write the opinion, and in those cases, there’s no way to tell what the opinion will be from what happens in the courtroom. It’s also REALLY hard to tell what will happen in a case like this, where the trial judge’s initial opinion is overturned on appeal, and the same trial judge is being asked to hear the case. The trial judge probably still thinks that he was right the first time - but s/he also won’t want to risk getting overturned on appeal again.
(I interned for a federal district judge after my first year of law school, and my first post-law school job will be clerking for that same judge next year, which is how I picked up on all this stuff)
Here’s the funny thing - I actually am living in Silver Spring MD right now. The trial is going down in the Montgomery County courthouse, which is less than 10 miles from me. I plan to be there for all of it come February 17. So if you want an inside scoop, lemme know.

it’s pretty obvious that acie is not yet ready to lead this team. he choked when woodson let him play in the late quarter. he barely did anything but hold the ball and he can’t handle the pressure especially in a close game. i think he only played well in the preseason only because there’s less pressure and he knows that its ok to make mistakes because the game is not yet official.

ANDO-it’s not a matter of them winning 50 gms, because they might not. Boston might not win 50 gms, but they know they can. The Hawks know they can now, but that doesn’t mean they will. Boston has the talent, history and the coaching to win 50gms or more. They know injuries are the only thing that will prevent them from that accomplishment. The Hawks know they have the talent, but lack the history and the coaching hasn’t been proven yet.
I just saw so many predictions that stated they could’t/wouldn’t win more than a certain number of gms. And so many, including you, used the projected improvement of other teams in the East to limit the Hawks, but didn’t see that as a henderence to other Eastern teams. While the Hawks improved their depth, versatility, DEF, OFF, size and individual talents, especially our starting frontcourt, so many of you were far too willing to discount the potential impact of that improvement over mere roster improvements. Philly was a good team last yr, but we swept them 3 out of 4. They added EBrand and we might sweep them again this yr(I hope we do anyway).
Brand’s addition “CHANGED” the dynamics of their starting lineup. The individual development and maturity of our returning starters greatly “ENHANCED” the dynamics of our starting lineup. The EBrand move can be compared to receiving a lateral promotion on your job. It might pay more money and give you a more prestigious title, but it’s not necessarily a move that will advance your career.
RAY-I think we will be just fine when we hit those inevitable bumps during the season. We now have enough talent, experience and veteran leadership to overcome those issues. The question in my mind is how will Woodson handle those bumps. Who knows, he might end up shocking the he!! out of me, and I hope he does. GO, YOU HIGH FLYING HAWKS!!!!!!!!

Mykhalc, What’s up, bro’?! Good to see you back around.
Najeh, I think that’s a pretty good assessment of Bibby.
Matt, thanks for the heads up on that, and the expertise. I’d be very appreciative if you can provide further info/insight on the court case.
Samuel, congrats on your daughter’s achievements.
As to Bibby, I wouldn’t say he’s awful. He’s not all that we need, but he’s a damn sight better than what we’ve had. I don’t know how much “future” we have with him, so I could see a trade coming if it benefits us (or rather the owners’ pockets). The only thing is, Acie would have to prove himself before that happens…or we’d have to be acquiring another pg with talent. Most likely either a solid young guy with at least some promise and potential. We’d be hard-pressed to get another veteran at Bibby’s level of talent (or near it) at this point, but many things are possible.
I really don’t know what will happen here, and it’s too soon to say that Law can’t take the reins. He’s played in two games.
Bibby isn’t as worthless by a long stretch, and a veteran team looking to compete for a championship would love to have him. I know what you’re saying as far as how some of us seem to de-value him, but remember: The Cavs wanted him something fierce, but we got there first and they had to get Mo Williams. Believe me, he’s got value around the league, but it’s a matter of fit. Like I said, he’s better than anything we’ve had at that position in years. But he’s not the best fit, and he’s not the future. We’ll enjoy what he can and does give us for now though. Here’s to hoping for more performances like last night’s and less like the ones in the preseason or against Orlando.

Ando, Bibby is the starting PG of a team that has surrendered less than 90 points to the Magic and 76ers. And he and JJ just torched the 76ers for 53 points on 50% shooting. There is no need to contemplate breaking up that backcourt, yet.
Sorry, when a team jumps out to the best start in 10 years, I find it silly to discuss trading anyone. Heck, whatever Speedy is saying at the end of the bench, keep him.
Seriously, Bibby will absolutely NOT match the value of his contract in terms of his statistics, but unless we can find an experience PG capable of instilling confidence in the team (and let’s not forget that Bibby played very well in the 1st half last night), then why trade him? It’s not like the ASG will save a ton of money by dumping him in February. And after 2 games, we haven’t seen Law prove he is ready to assume the driver’s seat. I guess folk just need to tweek, modify and suggest change… to have something to say. I guess saying that is easier than saying… DAMN, these guys look good so far.

I watched Bibby’s defense last night. He’s actually not a bad defensive player. He’s a smart and good team defensive player. He doubles down real good and is sneeky and came up with some timely steals. He’s not the fastest player but very smart.
Joe, you’re absolutely right. Guys just can’t seem to admitt that we’re a pretty good team right now. Matter of fact, one of the best in the league. That’s just too hard to believe after what this franchise has gone through the last few years.
Last night, Philly would have blown out anybody in the league the way they were hitting shots. We hung in there and got the W. Last night was another statement game. Almost as important as last year’s playoff run.

When you say bring on CP is that being over confident. CP also plays the Hawks harder then most teams because we didn’t select him in the draft. I am not saying that we can’t beat them but I’m saying maybe SC will have to get better soon, or AL will have to bring more confidence (a better game). I’m a Hawks fan for life but NO is a hungry team just like us. I think that we can be the Hornets, but let’s look on how they did the Cavaliers last night.
I also agree with Astro Joe, we have some of the worse columnist every on this blog. I don’t agree that this is the time to even think about trading any of these players. Gentlemen; Yeah, it’s only two games, but what’s happening now is teams are more aware of the fact that you just can’t run up the score against these Hawks, and hope to win. The psychological advantage of that is what all good team have. You hear commentators say it all the time, only something like,” So and so team is now going to work “. That’s because, the expectation is they will come back to win a game. The DOWNTOWN FLYERS”, are developing just that. Wins, are wins, and it’s never “only”.** just two wins, or even ten.It just is, what it is. If you’ve ever bought a home, or a car on a tight budget, yout know what I mean then, when the seller says to you,It’s only 250 thousand, or it’s only $37,000.00”. Hawks: 2-0, against two nice teams. Now that’s the ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. PEACE from THE NATIVE.

Guys, I know we have been spending a lot of energy on this blog pondering the prospects of trading Biddy and crowning Acie as our future PG. But if (this is a Big if) the Hawks start salivating about a championship run (not just a playoff run) with rumors of JJ as MVP, then the future maybe now. Woody will not rock the boat and keep things just as they are. Acie will continue to be a role player will no promotion in the foreseeable future.

I’m a Bibby fan by default. He’s a Hawk now, and I accept that. My 2 cents is that, in all fairness to him, he seems to still be adjusting . After all, they added a few new pieces to the squad. In saying that, I’ll put it on the line and state that after he orients himself to the newest guys, trading him will be a moot point by the deadline. Plus, I think it, and he said it,” HE WANTS TO BE HERE”. So I’ll defer to him, and hope his word is bond, and right now I don’t believe we can get it done with AL4, or Murray. Native Son

Sam,
Bibby did play some good team defense last night. Truthfully, that’s all I’m looking for from him. No team is slap full of defensive dynamos. Team defense is what’s most important, though you want the defensive stoppers, harass-types, and specialists like Mario West, Mo Evans, and especially Josh Smith. Horford and JJ are two of the most solid and rugged defenders who never really show it in the stat column. If Bibby plays defense like he did last night, I’m damn sure good with that. Now if we can just get some of the other guys on that page and stay that way each game.
I say bring on New Orleans too, because it presents a new and different kind of challenge for us. One we need to face early and learn from early.
Astro Joe,
Come on now, this trade talk stuff is nothing new by any stretch of the imagination. Sure, we suggest change, tweaking and modification to have something to say. Of course, you could say that about dang near any subject we get on, now can’t you? Be honest. Don’t we suggest plays, when to substitute, what lineups to go with? Have you never done this yourself? Heh, heh, heh! Yeah, uh-huh, LOL! But here’s the funny thing: don’t you want the GM to be doing that very same thing? I do. Hell, if he and his staff are not constantly thinking about tweaks, changes, modifications, and general possibilities, then he’s not doing his job. Nobody is suggesting a course of direct action right this very minute. But considering? A must. Unless of course we are thinking we have the perfect product already. Kind of hard to think that of a team that has yet to win a playoff series.
On the subject of trading Bibby, you KNOW it’s not all about the performance vs. money or we’d have never traded for him in the first place. Wouldn’t have made sense. And I do believe the real point has been stated numerous times, but here you are up to your old (and I mean old) tricks again. Expecting the ASG to do something they have historically done (regardless of how you seek to oversimplify or change the flavor of the concept) has nothing to do with this team winning.
Last I looked, even the former great doomandgloom blog nemesis naysayer Ando has said “Damn, this team looks good so far.”
So what’s your gripe, Mr. Firestarter?
Hee hee….come on, you know you saw this coming. I wouldn’t be true to blog form if I didn’t do it.

Native Son, Bibby is a heck of a lot better than what we’ve been stuck with. I might not be saying that so vehemently if Speedy didn’t stay injured. Of course, Bibby is still a far superior shooter.
I like the guy, but I also recognize his shortcomings. Let’s face it: when a guy is making a load of cash, despite when, who, or how he got paid it, and some of your fellow fans are yelling that he’s an elite player at his position, one of the top 3 or so in an entire conference….well, that lends to a bit more criticism, does it not? No harm done though. We’re winning, and he’s helping.
We’ll cross the bridge of trade possibilities when we come to it. But make no mistake. That bridge is coming. The key word is POSIBILITIES. Notice I didn’t say “certainties”…..

about this:
I know it’s still early, but how many of you preseason skeptics still feel we’ll struggle to break 500 and/or won’t meke the playoffs?
My skepticism is totally based on the notion that we can’t be lucky enough to have 2 relatively injury free years in a row.
If this team IS lucky enough to have another year as injury free as last year, then yes they have the talent to go high 40’s in wins. And if their confidence continues to grow, maybe they can win 50.
But I’ll stick to my prediction of 40, and hope to be wrong. It goes without saying that I don’t want ANYBODY to be injured. I’m just acknowledging the reality of that possibility.

For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t crown Acie anything right about now after his first two games. Nor would I declare him a lost cause where the future pg position is concerned. 2 games out of 82 in this context? No. Having opinions on a player’s individual performance in two games is a good bit different than having an opinion on an entire team’s performance after two games.

It was probably his agent RMS. If Marvin had of stayed at UNC for another year or two, he woulda lost Millions. The reason I say this is because his draft status was based on potential only. He woulda been a fool not to come out when he knew he was a lock to go top 3.

as much as i was ACIE’s #1 fan at the start of last season i feel he needs this season to really get his feet under him with the infamous WOODSON at the helm!!! with WOODSON directing him ACIE could end up as confused this year as he was ‘after’ he came back from injury!!! so BIBBY is THE man whether you believe it/like it or not!!!
the ONLY cat READY to step in for BIBBY right now is FLIP…PERIOD!!!

Ray,
Chauncey Billips is the only “elite” PG in the East right now. All the others do certain things well but are lacking in other areas. Name me two PGs ,other than Billips, who are better than Bibby.

Sam, You’re nnot the first person to say that about the PG’s in the east……and I agree.
……..But TJ Ford and Calderon aren’t STARS but they’re pretty good.

First things first: Man, I’m excited for you regarding your daughter’s success. That’s great and here’s hoping she’ll keep it up and keep making you proud.
Now here’s a questions for you: Do any other point guards in the East make over $15M/YR including Mr. Big Shot?
I didn’t think so. I’m STILL a Mike Bibby fan, and have been since Arizona’s amazing run in ‘97, but you can NOT argue that we are getting $15M in production from him, and that’s the crux of any criticism regarding him.
And, right now, if salary was not a factor, would you trade Bibby straight up for Calderon or Mo Williams?
I’d do either in a heartbeat. To me, a big Bibby fan, he’s realistically about the 4th or 5th best PG in the East.
And I still agree with Ando that he’s likely to be gone by the trading deadline unless there is something in the divorce that makes it to BASG”s advantage to keep him.

SAUTEE-injuries are a part of the gm. We made the playoffs last yr with an injured Bibby, who was unfamiliar with his teammates, coaching staff and team OFF/DEF. We are now talented enough and deep enough to withstand most injuries. Injuries become major issues depending on who’s injured, when they’re injuried and if it causes them to miss gms. You also have to factor in who you have as a replacement for that injured player(s).
Right now, JJ would be the biggest hit we could least afford to take. I believe we are deep enough, versatile enough and strong enough both OFF & DEF to withstand the loss of anyone else and still be a contending playoff calibur team. Once we settle down, gain consistency, and everyones roll and mins are established, we’ll become a better team as the season progresses.
I want to go back to a point I was making in my last post. Additions to starting lineups like EBrand and JOneal look good on paper, and are more often beneficial than not. But, for these players to do their thing, certain adjustments and/or concessions have to be made by the other starters for that to happen. So, what you might gain from the addition to the starting lineup will often be offset by the reduced output of those making the concessions and/or adjustments.

While I’m very excited by this 2-0 start, I’m certainly not ready to crown Woody COY.
We still need more motion on offense. And why, with the athleticism of our C / PF we don’t employ a high-low set on offense, is just a total mystery.
Did we not watch film of Florida’s NC teams before we drafted Horford? He should be lobbing to Smoove for jams at least a couple of times per game.
By Thanksgiving we’ll know a lot about the changing of Woody’s stripes. We have a schedule that throws 4 sets of back-to-back games in succession. That will let us know about how he’s using his bench.
So far Joe is averaging 38 min./gm. Yes, that’s less than the 40+/per from last yr, but he was in early foul trouble against the Magic, or I’m sure he’d have played more.
I’m still not convinced that he’ll actually use this “deep bench” he’s been given. But we’ll know by Thanksgiving.

Hey I’m impressed. Last time this team showed me it had the ability to contend in the East. Of course Joe, Bibby and Smooth did their thing but Flip and Zaza helped this team come back. Great win!!
And where are the people that last year said Jsmoove should quit shooting three pointers? I’m the only one that encouraged him to shoot more. Believe it or not his three point shooting has helped us to get to a 2-0 start. It also helped us get off to a fast start last year.
But enough of the Hawks the Crimson Tide is #1!!!! I told yall it was just a matter of time before we took our right position. Next week is the test when we play LSU. The Hawks need to watch the game Saturday to see what a championship teams look like.

Joe, I know what you’re doing. You’re becoming Anakin again, and you are trying to draw out Andro for a classic battle! Yes, I have uncovered the conspiracy, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!
Samuel,
That is not the point I was trying to make. The point is that when you’re supposed to be that good (second best in the East?) the criticism is harsher. I mean, 15.5 ppg, 2.5rpg, 4apg, 2.5 turnovers per game, and 2.5spg is nothing to sniff loudly at, but 35% field goal shooting and 23% 3-point shooting added to it makes me think of something I’d expect from a guy who’s top 10, not top 2. I definitely want to see more of those 19 point, 4 assist, 3 steal games where he shoots a little less than 50% from the field than those 12 point, 4 assist, 3 turnover games where he shoots around 30%. But to be fair, we’re only talking about 2 games. That’s not enough to define a guy.
But I’m not going to avoid your original question. My picks of guys as good or better than Bibby (in my opinion, not supported by fact necessarily) would be Mo Williams (though that’s somewhat borderline), Devin Harris, and Jose Calderon. In fact, if given a choice, I’d take Calderon or Harris, signed to a 4 year or more contract today over Bibby signed for just this year. Or even Bibby signed for a few years. Harris and Calderon are younger, faster, get to the basket better, and can still shoot from the outside, all while piling up the assists.
Nothing against Bibby, that’s just my opinion. In the meantime, I’m happy we have a guy like him, because it could easily be worse, and we know what “worse” looks like, don’t we? But I’m not convinced that the powers that be don’t have bigger concerns than whether or not Bibby is the second best pg in the East. What’s important to us, the team, and even the coach just may not be the biggest thing in their minds. And we’ll know by the trade deadline if it is or not. Or after the season. Who knows, but we’ll know something by at least then.
Until then, hey…I hold Bibby to the standard. He’s good, and I expect him to be good. I don’t think he’s the absolute best fit for this team still, but I am not complaining when the other alternatives have either passed us by (Calderon) or are unattainable (Harris). As you say, how many guys are better than him?

Ray, you know they say that you can never tell anyone the correct way to react to a traumatic situation. Well, in the traumatic situation of seeing my team win 2 games against teams that will certainly compete for a home court playoff berth…. one by an end-to-end domination and the other in a comeback style, then I have NO IDEA how to act. So I guess I’m paralyzed with sheer delight and expect others to follow suit. Why contemplate any change when everything seems to be working? If Woody even thinks about growing hair on his head, he should not only be fired but made to wear a pink boa and chained to a light post outside of the Fox Theater holding a large jar of KY jelly. In other words, don’t change a dag on thang. Ya’ll could talk about trades, plays, rotations, salary cap, draft picks or assistant coaches, but I won’t join. If you start talking about the A Town Dancers, well, that’s another story. But as far as the team, players and coaches… I’ll remain paralyzed in the trauma of utter, sheer and unexpected delight. All are welcomed to join.

“I’m not going to go out there and try and be the biggest scorer,” explained Bibby. “It’s a contract year for me. A lot of people feel, you know, (in a) contract year, they’re going to go out there and put up a lot of numbers. I’m going to do what it takes for this team to win. If it’s defense, passing, I’m going to do what it takes for this team to win.”
That’s what Bibby has to say about all of this…..Via HoopsWorld
Who are we to say what an elite plyer is SUPPOSED to do anyway? Look Ray allen’s numbers dropped of signifiantly when he entered Doc’s system…..and people in Boston were calling for Ray’s head early in the playoffs………..but you don’t here that anymore do you, you also don’t here people talking about their age anymore huh……or the fact that Rondo can’t shoot.
So what changed? They Won
Of course the Media doesn’t expect the Hawks to win a title but Second round berth?(Kenny “The Jet” Smith), possibly ECF? Why not?
Barkley expects the Timberwolves to finish with a better record than us? That’s halarious.
The point is when we WIN you won’t hear anything from the doubters anymore.
Ray, Harris? Yes Calderon? Maybe, I’d rather have Bibby. He’s just an overrated outside shooter. I bet if he had played in that olympic final Spain wouldn’t have even been in the game(Navarro had his JJ floater going). I respect his game but i’m not nearly as enamored as some of you on this blog seem to be with him lol.
Devan Harris and T.J ford are better, simply because the can cause He!! whenever they want to on the court by penetrating. To me those type of PG’s are the best of the best. Deron, Paul, Davis, Ford, Harris, Billups, Arenas(Really not a PG, more of a Ball-stopper)….these guys are Bullies period. They’re going to get what they want when they want it, and no one is going to tell them otherwise.
I beleive Acie has this ability, he just needs more seasoning. Bibby Is an exellent passer but he’s much more of spot up shooter(SG)..In Sactown Christie handled the ball as much as Bibby did, and their offense ran through the bigs…I think that’s why Bibby and JJ have such an exellent Two man game. You neve saw any of that being ran when other guards were here did you? And it’s so hard to stop…..b/c you can’t double or you get burned.
…..so would it be safe to say that Woody(Did I just defend him??) is at least TRYING to cater the offense based on the personell…..Actually Bibby helps so much b/c he doesn’t dribble out the shot-clock like (The others lol). JJ get’s to have the Ball in his hands(which he LOVES) and bibby gets to spot up(his favorite thing to do)….seems like a happy unuion to me….
Even if you go back to his Arizona days…..He never really ran the offense, he just Shot and Made plays for others…….Lute Olsen(Arizona) loved Recruiting scoring guards b/c they fit so well in his system (Terry, The Stoudamires’, Agent Zero….he shoots too lol)……
Anyway, back to my point. I can’t wait until the (Healthy)Bibby-Calderon matchup on friday….Last time the (Injured) Bibby got the best of him and T.J Ford(No more Buzzer-Beaters please…..TOTAL DOMINATION!!!).
Maan, this is going to be a fun season…

Thanks Sautee,
I’ll tell my baby yall gave her props. I hope I don’t seem like i’m braggin too much but i’m very excited about her upside. She is a very unique little girl if I may say so myself. She’s a father and a coaches dream. Totally focused and unfased by anything. Hopefully,I can win the lottery and continue to pay for all the training it will take to get her to the level we believe she is capable of going. We’re shooting for Bela Karolyi’s camp this year and it aint cheap.
Dam, I can’t sleep. This time changing has got me all screwed up. Who’s great idea was this?
Ray, I will give you Calderon simply because of his size and all around ability. I’m not sure he would be as good a fit for the Hawks as Bibby though. We will need Bibby’s scoring ability for games like the last one where he can carry us until JJ gets cranked up. Calderon can’t take over a game like that.
I really like TJ Ford but he has just as many liabilities as Bibby. He can’t shoot that well and he’s the smallest guard in the league. Bibby is strong enough to prevent most guards from posting him up at will. Ford will always be a target for the post up game, especially in the playoffs when the game slows down.
I definately would not take Devin Harris over Bibby at this point. Sure, he’s fast and young but he hasn’t proven he can lead a team.
You guys keep harping on Bibby’s salary. That’s exactly the reason why he won’t be traded this year.
Tell you what. You guys put me a package together where salaries match and both teams would benefit and present it to me. If it makes sense, I’ll say so but right now the Hawks are riding a wave and I can’t see anybody with the Balls to mess with it.
What I can see happening is Marvin being moved for a pick or defensive-minded 7’center and Speedy’s contract being bought out. Wouldn’t that save us some cash?

I don’t know if the Hawks would be a better team with Mo Evans in the starting five as opposed to Williams.
But if if Pachulia stays on a tear, they might be better served to start him. Richbrave, he’s no butterfly, but he seems to have found a toughness that I’ve never seen him play with before. Obviously the whole punking Garnett thing in the playoffs has helped Pachulia develop the kind of persona that you’d like to see from a big off the bench- not afraid to bang around, and with a measured confidence.
There will not be a Bibby trade. I’m sure the Hawks brass are taking into account that the local bloggers have expressed concern over the value of his salary. I don’t think they care.
If you watch these games, you’ve probably noticed that, whether you all think he’s a “top five” point guard in this league or not, the Hawks play better with him on the floor. It’s undeniable. Furthermore, this team has developed a strong chemistry. Not even the BASG is dumb enough to tamper with that. While it might have been a popular off-season debate, it just doesn’t make sense on ANY level to further discuss the non-existent possibility of a Bibby trade.

Here is a vote for the Hawks “big” line-up: after seeing Joosh get tossed around by Reggie Evens with no calls, I cannot see how he can last a whole season playing against guys 30-50lbs heavier and 2-5 ” taller and not suffer an injury. In fact, there is a physical mismatch at almost every posistion except the 2 with the current starting line up.
How long do you think it will be before Al’s agent registers his thoughts on his client’s having to risk his career growth playing out of position for no good reason?

Random Thoughts:
Ariose- Mo Williams/J calderon are both better pg’s than Bibby.
Marvin Williams should be coming off the bench, Mo Evans is a better fit in the starting 5(DEFENSE)
No way we trade Bibby…. Acie Law is definitely not ready to lead this team,i hope he breaks through at sum point ,but right now he is still hesitant and timid out there. I will give him props for his defense though.
ZAZA is playing better than he’s ever played,Right now he is our best big man excluding Smoove…..never thought I would say than.
When u really need a bucket Flip will get it for u period-luv that man’s scoring ability
JJ-is the truth, no doubt about it -at this rate he will be an all star again.
I see the improvements in Smooves game….Marvin not so much
I enjoyed this win as much as the playoff wins… Down by 23 and clawing our way back is big
We have a good chance at winning on Wednesday, Peja/Chandler are both out with injuries

The lineup that seemed the most effective on Saturday night against the 76ers was with Flip at the 2 and JJ at the 3. (with the other starters)
Depending on who we’re playing, I can see that lineup being more potent than JJ at the 2 and Marvin or Mo at the 3.

I.MUS-I’ll give you Mo, but like I said, i’m not sold on Calderon just yet.
Sautee, that linup was a pentration lineup, only the best ball-handlers apply lol(less Acie of cousre).
Well, at least Mark Bradley and Rick Sund agree with me that Horford is not necessarily better at the 5-spot…..think about it. Big Centers are afraid to leave the paint, so he’s always open for the Mid-Range shot, and His Post(or offensive) game isn’t serious enough yet for him to be the PF yet(i’m pretty sure their supposed to score a lot).
Smoove also causes so many problems for opposing PF…..and he stuffs his stats from the paint not the peremeter…….Like I said as long as we have a legit Big who can come off of the bench(Zaza) we’ll be fine…..Besides once we cranked up the defense last game on philly, all of that scoring in the paint stopped completly(Actually they couldn’t score away from the paint either…..hmmm)
And Marvin coming off the bench? He’ll be even LESS effective if we do that, besides it was only one game….
I.Mus- If Mo is better then we should loose just like the cavs did right? Or even worse right? We shall see(although that has absolutely nothing to do with the individual matchup……but winning cures all.)
