TD’s take, and more …
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
No one has had a better vantage point for the Hawks’ unofficial summer school sessions than retired NBA veteran and one-time Hawks sharpshooter Tony Delk.
As one of the mainstays at the team’s practice facility this summer (Delk insists he’s not mounting a comeback but merely trying to “stay in shape”), Delk saw things the past few months that lead him to believe the Hawks will continue the rise that started in their playoff series against Boston in May.
Granted, Delk is the firs to admit that what a player looks like in an empty gym in the summer isn’t always a tell tale sign of how they’ll fair once the real games start. But having watched the Hawks closely the past few seasons, and especially last season, he’s convinced that the seeds for future success have been planted sufficiently.
“You can see who has come back improved physically and with a new twist to their game that you didn’t see the year before,” Delk said. “And the one guy that stands out to me off the top of my head is Al [Horford]. He’s making that mid-range shot. He’s come back a lot better. And he’s going to play hard so you know what he’s going to do. And really, if they stay healthy, both Acie [Law IV] and Speedy [Claxton] have really showed me something. I think they can help this team in ways that neither one of them did last year for reasons that were largely out of their control. When you look at how little Acie played last year and the fact that Speedy was out all year, it’s like having two new players this season without having to go out and sign them. Acie is physical and has that size to work with, all he needs is time on the floor. And Speedy’s got his bounce, his quickness and his outside shot has been as good as I can remember. That’s invaluable when you’re in the place the Hawks are right now.”
Just where they are right now depends on your perspective. Many of the pundits have already pegged the Hawks for a fall back to the pack in the Eastern Conference standings.
Delk, however, isn’t so sure that will be the case.
“The way they finished they have to know they’re going to be a marked team,” Delk said. “With that in mind, they have to come to play every single night. They won’t be able to sneak up on anybody. The key to me is finding the right chemistry in training camp. But I think they have a good shot at doing well and finishing in the mix of that top eight in the East. I don’t see how anyone could be convinced that they’re going to fall back to the pack.”
Delk said seeing so many of the Hawks on the floor during the past few months, on their own time, is what convinced him that they realize what’s at stake and what it will take to realize whatever goals they have or will set for themselves this season.
“I don’t think NBA players of my generation and beyond have ever gotten enough credit for all the work they do this time of year,” he said. “This is the time when you get in the gym and really get in shape and trying to polish your game. You can only do so many drills. At some point you have to put it into motion out there on the floor. And I think these guys, based on the way they finished and the way they had this city rocking, they all want to start off right. You don’t want to be behind the curve, you want to get ahead and know that you are a team to be reckoned with. Because the ultimate truth is that the seventh or eighth spot is not guaranteed to anybody. But if you get to third or fourth and stay right there you won’t be on pins and needles in those last five or six games like last year. If you get those wins early on and get off to a good start, that’s the key, and it keeps the fans involved.”
GOLD MEDAL DAYDREAMS: Hawks captain Joe Johnson can’t help but daydream about what it might have been like to have that gold medal draped around his neck in Beijing.
Technically, Johnson is still a member of the U.S. men’s senior national team. But he and the other players on the master roster that didn’t make the travel squad for the Beijing games will have to admire the flashy jewelry of their teammates that did make the trip.
With so few opportunities to snag Olympic gold, Johnson knows that the opportunity of a lifetime might not present itself again.
“It’s not always just about you,” he said. “Sometimes it’s about something a lot bigger than that. I’m just happy that we regained our position as the best team in the world. Do I wish I’d have been there on the floor with those guys? Absolutely. But I wasn’t and unfortunately there is nothing that I can do about it now. That said, I’ve got nothing but love for all those guys that were there. They did a fantastic job and represented us to the fullest. And who knows where we’ll be in 2012. I’ll be a little bit older but you never know. Maybe I’ll get another shot.”
COACH BIBBY?: A large chunk of Mike Bibby’s summer was spent coaching basketball as opposed to playing. As the shot-called on his son’s AAU team, Bibby has a new perspective on the game, sort of.
“It was a good time,” he said of his summer spent running the show in a different way. “I was coaching my son, which is about as good as it gets.”
Now that he’s back to playing to the whistle instead of blowing one, Bibby’s eager to get his timing back. And perhaps more importantly, he’s eager to see where he fits going into the final year of his contract.
“It goes by fast, It does go by fast. But I still got some left,” Bibby said and smiled. “Last year I came in and just tried to fit in. You don’t want to come in and try and do too much. It was the same way when I got to Sacramento [from Vancouver]. You want to come in and fit in and just see how things play out.”
Things played out particularly well, with the Hawks earning the franchise’s first postseason berth in nearly a decade with Bibby piloting the ship.
But he struggled in the series against Boston, something that he shook off immediately after that Game 7 loss but has not forgotten.
“I think we definitely could have beaten them,” Bibby said. “We just didn’t play well on the road at all, and I mean at all. But things happen for a reason. Maybe that was the start for us to excel this season.”

More good stuff, Sekou
A question Ive been wondering about for awhile: In a previous blog you mentioned that many players on the Redeem Team thought Horford was the most impressive player of the young squad that challenged them… can you divulge more about that??? Any indication on how those practice games went? Or are you saving that for an article on Horf´s offseason? Dish out the dirt!
I think Horford can make the All-star game as soon as this season. 16 and 12 is not out of his sights, knowing how hard he works.

Nice Piece Sekou. Bibby said he wants to retire at 35, I think he can play a little longer than that though.
I was wondering how Joe felt about getting snubbed……especially after his playoff performances. Glad to see that he’s just happy for the guys who won and is ready for another season of great basketball.
Also, I hope TD is right lol.

Mavid, I don’t think they let you play in Rookie-Soph game and the All-Star game in the same year.
Also his sessions with TEAM USA went like this: He and the other select members got their butts handed to them a bunch of times on the first day (They won like three games out of who knows how many…..I think it was 12). Then over the next couple of days the settled in and made the competition really tough for team USA…….winning more games ofd course. It was really physical stuff, as evidenced by LeBron spraining his ankle.

Can you link me to an article that gives an account of those games (including how the select team members performed).
Also, if a rookie or sophmore is good enough to play in the All Star game… they play in that game, not the rookie/sophmore one.
I think the favorites for the big men in the East are obviously KG, Dwight, Bosh and Brand. But who knows, the way Horf works, I wouldnt put it past him (especially if he can consistently hit that mid-range shot)

Al Horford is the future of this team. We will only go as far as he takes us. I’m glad to see he’s developing a mid-range jumper, but I’d be really glad to see if he ever develops a go-to move in the post. Once he does, he’ll be a 20-10 guy every night. And if he becomes a 20-10 guy, that opens things up for our perimeter players. He won’t make the all-star team this year, but probably will by 2009-2010 season.

My fear is that this is Woodson we’re talking about, so he won’t be patient enough to let those other resources operate.
Sekou thanks for the update on Bibby’s offseason coaching stint. I believe that in order for the Hawks to reach the next level he will have to become the player-coach on the floor.
The rest of the pundits can sleep on the Hawks if they want to, but you absolutely cannot underestimate the chemistry this unit has developed since MB came aboard. This is why I’m in favor of the Hawks finding some way to keep him after next season.

TD sounds like a future coach. We have turned into a guard heavy team. I ain’t hatin’, but we have to have Zaza to stand up to buttress the frontline. Good gosh Bibby, Flip and a healthy Speedy with a hungry maturing Acie. Woody has to be chomping at the bit. Sekou, how is Sol looking?

Tommy, it really depends on how we play with him this season, coupled with the price tag of his next contract and the emergence (or lack there of) of Acie.
Ryder, I agree… we need Bibby and Joe to be our “offensive coordinators”. I think they both know more about an effective offense than Woody.

Tony Delk has some interesting things to say. Some of the things that stuck out the most included the following:
1)Horford’s developing midrange shot. Knew it was coming. Anybody watching the games knew it, too.
2)Acie’s playing time and abilities. Delk says Acie is physical and just needs time on the floor. He also mentions how Acie didn’t have any control over how much he got to play. How long have we been screeching about that?
3)Speedy Claxton. It remains to be seen just what his involvement will be. And I mean this could go in a few different directions, including some we’ve already re-visited a few times. Delk says his shot is as good as he can remember it being. I don’t remember Claxton having much of an outside shot. But what do I know….Delk’s the one who’s been there.
4)Sometimes it’s not as much about what is said as it is about what’s NOT said. Delk feels like the team can be pretty good. That’s encouraging. I’m sure his perspective is at least as qualified as any here…..right??
Also, (and I could be reading too much into this) I notice who he doesn’t say has seemed to come back differently. I realize he’s saying “off the top of my head”, but it is singular that Horford is the first to come to mind, and that Acie and Speedy follow. No mention of Marvin. Nor any others. Huh. Interesting.
I’m looking forward to more info from Sekou as things wear on…

Tell Ando I got $50.00 on the hawks making it to the playoffs.
I wouldn’t read into what Delk didn’t say. Sekou previously reported Marvin and Smoove where looking rather good. I think Delk gives a different insight. You have to know Horford will always standout, that’s the type of player he is. This guy will put up Tim Duncan numbers soon; it’s just a matter of time. The core is intact, and there shouldn’t be chemistry issues. Therefore, we should jump out the gate pouncing on other teams.
I think Bibby will have to fight Acie off for the starting position. Keep in mind Acie is the future pg for this team, and if Woody has any sense he will give Acie a fare shot at the starting position. Hands down Acie plays better defense then Bibby, and he’s a lot quicker (hella quicker). He gets to the hole, but he had problems finishing. (a lot of that has to do with limited playing time) With time and experience Acie will prove to be the better pg.
Manny

I know tempers flair on this blog, and that’s due to the fact, people are passionate about their beliefs. However, we are all Hawks fans (I think), so hopefully once the season starts, the personal attacks will end. There has to be a more articulate way to prove ones points without going into a personal assassination of one’s race, creed, profession, and character. Sometimes the bigger person has to let it go, and move forward in a new direction.

Thatz just great…… 4 point guards!!!
Our head coach could’nt get it right when we only had TLue/AJ,how the hell is he gonna find minutes for all of these guyz. Bibby and Flip will probably eat the majority of the minutes with acie playing about 8 minutes per contest……
Ariose…..dont start ur witch hunt lol…
Met Al horford and his family today….He’s a cool guy kind of reserved/ chill though -couldnt get anything out of him (basketball info)………
I dont know what TD saw …but Al looks smaller than he did last year IMO, As long as his game is improved who really cares. I could see the 15 lbs of muscle on Josh but Al looks the same.
Enuff already lets get camp started …one more week
Who is doing the heigth/weight for the NBA…….Al looks like he is 6’8 at best, i was standing next to the guy and he wasnt alot bigger than myself and im 6’3 .75 inches in bare feet……….

Glad to see Salim find a home (maybe). He’s playing behind guys like Michael Finley and Roger Mason… and both of those guys are on the bench. I always thought that Salim could be a Nick Van Exel type player (the Nick at Night version that played for the Spurs). But frankly, I see him more like a Jeremy Richardson type 13th man on the Spurs team. But I’m not hatin’, he is still in the NBA and I’m still flippin’ burgers. “Onions with that?”

Tony Delk’s observations all seem really nice right now, but how much will they really matter considering that Woody is still the coach? Will these supposed improvements even get a chance to show themselves? There was a blog a couple of weeks ago about which player would be the key to this season — I’m more convinced with each day that Woody’s performance is gonna make or break this season more than any individual player.
Ando, I am ready to take you up on your offer, but I am poor. Is a $5 bet good enough for you?

At the end of the day it is up to Woodson to make this work. If he feels like he is losing too many games he might shorten the bench and ride 7 to 8 guys trying to make the playoffs again. He has to find a way to get guys like Law and our young bigs some minutes. He also has to come up with more than 2 offensive plays this season. If Woodson finally gets it this year I have no doubt we make the playoffs. If he goes woodpecker we might be on the outside looking in.

After weeks (months?) away from the blog all I have to bring is that Hanno Mottola retired. Makes me wonder what ever happened to Cal Bowdler.
I digress.
I don’t mind the excess of guards on the roster. Given the health concerns of several of those involved, over the course of the season, the teams will need that depth.
I know everyone is holding their breath that Solo and Hunter can add some depth, but I’d feel a lot better with one more experienced big on the roster.

I cant wait for the season to start.
There are 5 50+-win teams in the east that are legit contenders (Magic, Pistons, Cavs, Celtics, Sixers) and about 10 that have realistic playoff goals with very good teams (Hawks, Heat, Raptors, Wizards and Bulls)
There are gonna be some great GREAT battles in the East and in the West with the Rockets, Lakers, Hornets, Clippers, Blazers, Mavs, Spurs, Suns, Jazz and Nuggets.
10 real-deals on both sides. GREAT/SUPER-EXCITING and competitive year this coming season!!!!!!
HORFORD IS THE KEY TO THIS YEAR AND THE FUTURE!
GET HIM THE BALL IN THE LOWPOST EARLY AND OFTEN. WATCH HIM BE THE 20/10 MONSTER ALLSTAR POWER FORWARD THAT LEADS THIS TEAM FOR THE NEXT 10+ YEARS……. (dont forget that he’ll make all-defense every year too)
GET HIM TO THE POWER FORWARD SPOT! BREAK-OUT SOLO AND FILL UP OUR CENTER SPOT!
MARVIN TO 6th MAN! SMOOVE TO THE SF SPOT! GO HAWKS GO!!!!
Regardless though I LOVE IT. We got size off the bench, good athleticism, scorers, shooters, a superstar, young stars on the rise, a dominant bigman as soon as maybe this year in Horford (20/10 allstar PF for most the necxt decade).
I lovin the team right now. And the league in general. Its gonna be a dogfight of a year in the NBA this year.

And Ken, I still say we should go with Bibby, JJ, Evans, Smoove, and Horford. And a bench of Acie, Flip, Marvin, Othello, and Zaza. With Speedy, Gardner, Solo, Morris, and Mario filling out the roster. Evans gives us anothe r vet alongside JJ and Bibby, who plays better Defense and also has better range than Marvin. Marvin can replace Chills as the 6th man.
That actually makes alot of sense Terrell. Evans shooting spaces the floor and more importantly his defense can give Joe a rest on the 2nd-best wing from the opponent while Evans takes on the primary scorer of the opponent.
Most importantly: Marvin. He gets a chance to thrive and gets the added responsibility of chillz’s role thrown his way at 6th man. He’ll be the focal point of hte 2nd unit, the MAN. He’ll have a chance to break o ut and play VERY aggressively on offense……… and his versatility makes him able to be a great 6th man in that he could sub in for JJ, Evans or Smoove and the lineup is good to go. He could evan sub in for Al if we want to go real small-ball and even sub in for Bibby if JJ is gonna run point for spot-minutes.
No matter what he’s getting 30 minutes a night and it will give him a green-light. Make our bench fearsome from weakness to strenght, and make our starting lineup much stronger and more well-rounded….
Great plan. Im good either way though, whether Marvin starts or not. Both instances have plus’s and minuses.

Ant Banks, for anti-patriotic stuff, go see Josh Howard. He ain’t with this “USA” stuff. I say ship him and half of Hollywood right the hell out of here….you wanna be somewhere else (like in the middle of a war zone, not making oodles of American dollars playing a game), then get the F#ck going….People don’t know how good they have it. This is the only country that not only tolerates you saying all kinds of bull$hit, but will go out of its way to fight to make sure you retain that right. Elsewhere, they cut off a body part or put you in a place where the beatings don’t stop. Or they put you in the dirt if you make enough noise.
Steve, you’re crazy. The Mavs don’t even know for sure they want to keep that guy. Have we not learned by now that taking other people’s problem children is a bad policy? Leave the knotheads to New York….and the Oakland Raiders….Howard’s too busy trying to steal the “knucklehead of the decade, but still hasn’t won anybody a championship (therefore not yet worth the trouble)” award from Ron Artest. In case you guy’s haven’t seen it yet, here’s Sekou’s recent interview with Joe Johnson.
I.MUS, Ray was right when he said you have the coolest job lol. BTW no witch hunt for me….yet heh……As far as salim is concerned sure the hawks should win……but if it’s a buzzer beater by salim then i’m not mad lol……wait he plays for the spurs right…..I think the odds may be in his favor hehehehe.
Half of those NBA playes are shorter than listed lol. Horford had a busy summer. Really the only serious weight lifting he did was with the Athletic trainers at Flordia when he was at School during this summer. Also you have to remember that it’s really tough to lift and play ball like that. You’ll be so sore you can barely lift a ball. that’s probably why Sekou said Smoove looked more streamlined than last time it was b/c he had to chill with the heavy lifting in order to work on his skills. Serious Lifting throws your shot off.
This was about Horford though right???….anyway his skills will be better hopefully since he wasn’t lifting like that.

as far as people don’t know how good they got it here, REALLY, well go tell that to the family of Emmitt Till, a 14yr old who was murdered by 2 grown white men, in mississippi, go tell that to the family of Medgar Evers, NAACP field officer who was killed by Byron Delabeckwith and was not brought to justice until 2000, some 40 yrs later.
or what about those 4 african american girls who were bombed in alabama by white kkk members, or what about the Tuskegee Experiment, where black males were given syphillis and were tracked for 40 yrs by the CDC. I can go own, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I know my history!!!
Jigga, do you want to talk about how good we got it here in America? Don’t get me started!! hopefully, you aren’t some brainwashed house jigga
