In the meantime …
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
SMYRNA - While we’ve all been locked in on the free agent situation regarding both Josh Smith and Josh Childress the Hawks other players have been busy with the business that is every offseason.
That’s not to say the other players aren’t interested in the futures of their teammates, because they are. In fact, the one question I get most from Hawks players is “what’s up with Josh and Josh?” - as if I know any better than they do.
(There is nothing new to mention regarding the Joshes. The salary cap number will be released to teams Tuesday afternoon/evening, convenient huh, just in time for Wednesday’s official start of the free agent signing period. Once everyone around the league has that official cap number in hand they can go about consummating deals that have been on the table since last week.)
The better question is what’s up with you?
So I poked my head in at Philips Arena this morning in an effort to find an answer to that question. The first two faces I see, shortly before 10 a.m. the morning after the extended 4th of July weekend, belong to Acie Law IV and Hawks coach Mike Woodson.
They were on the practice floor bright and early (Law was working out with Hawks assistant video coordinator John “Beans” Beckett and Woodson stumbled upon them on his way to his office and an impromptu brainstorming session began about the nuances of playing point guard for the Hawks) playing out a scene we all might see on the regular over the next few years.
Save for a two week break, Law’s been working out relentlessly since the Hawks’ playoff run ended. He said he’s hungry as ever and will not let up come mini-camp and summer league (next week in Atlanta for mini-camp and the following week and a half in Salt Lake City for mini-camp).
Woodson was all smiles seeing Law on the floor so early and already having worked up a ferocious sweat while working on his shot and an assortment of other things during his early morning workout.
Law retired to the weight room (allowing me a few minutes to trade questions and answers with Woodson for an upcoming piece on Law) and when he finished with that part of his routine he headed out the door for a therapy session for his injured wrist that caused him problems during his rookie season (he said the wrist feels fine and that the therapy three days a week has done wonders).
He admitted to being wired up for the upcoming season and even more fired about his chance to compete in mini-camp and summer league.
“I can’t wait,” he said, uttering a phrase rarely heard from the lips of a scone-year guy in the middle of his first NBA summer.
While I was in the midst of wrapping up with Law and Woodson Zaza Pachulia breezes into the room with his bag over his shoulder, having already completed his weight room work while I was snooping around downstairs.
ZP seems just as eager as Acie to get back out there and get after someone - he’ll have to do his work with the rest of the Georgian national team when they convene for training camp in a few weeks for some competitions on the other side of the globe.
With all the attention on the NBA Finals and then free agency, it’s easy to overlook just how much work goes on outside of the limelight in this league (the Hawks, like every other team in the league, have guys stretched all over the place doing individual work of their own).
And speaking of work, I put my snooping skills to good use this morning. I pilfered the Hawks’ mini-camp roster/summer league roster (not everyone on the mini-camp roster is going to make the cut for Salt Lake City and some guys will join the Hawks’ summer league crew in Salt Lake City without going through mini-camp) and was surprised by a few of the names on the list. You might be surprised as well (I can’t imagine it’ll take long for the surprise to kick in):
G - Acie Law IV
G - Speedy Claxton
G - Dominique Kirk
G - Brian Chase
G - Jeremy Richardson
G - Demetric Bennett
G - Thomas Gardner
G/F - Mario West
G/F - Luke Jackson
F - Brian Randle
F - Kevin Pinckney
F - Marcus Hubbard
F - Othella Hunter
F - Brian Butch
C - Solomon Jones
C - Jamal Sampson
C - Olumide Oyedeji
I’m still doing homework on some of these cats (since I’d never heard of them), so I’ll reserve comment on most. But I have to say I was stunned to see Speedy Claxton’s name on the list.
Someone mentioned to me a while back that they thought he was going to be on the summer league roster. I thought it was a joke. But with all the injury problems he’s had the past two years it makes sense to see how he’s holding up in July before getting to training camp in a couple months and finding out.
Naturally, you want to see how he fares in what should be some heated competition (if Law has his way). But you also want to see how Solomon Jones, Jeremy Richardson and Mario West look against a group of hungry free agents.
Some of the other names are intriguing - Luke Jackson was a lottery pick, Gardner was a standout college player at Missouri, Randle was the same at Illinois and Butch the same at Wisconsin. Sampson and Oyedeji have the kind of size and experience (both have been on NBA rosters at one time or another).
And as receptive as the Hawks have been to free agent invitees in the past (West, Richardson, Ced Bozeman, Dijon Thompson, Obinna Ekezie and a host of others) these guys need to be watched.
These guys won’t get going until this time next week, just a couple days before departing for Salt Lake City. The free agent drama should play out before then. But in the meantime, we can chew on this list and see if there isn’t a player or two in this group (not already under contract) that could impact the Hawks in the near future

Love that Acie is getting his work done and getting after it this offseason. He has too much heart and desire to not be a factor for this team in some capacity.
Now let’s get this deal for the Joshes done and move on!

Sekou, thanks for the breath of fresh air.
Also, it’s wonderful to know that Law is up and about, and working like a demon. Funny that Woodson had to “stumble” into his own player, who was working with an assistant video coordinator, rather than a member of the coaching staff. All the same, at least Woodson didn’t ignore him, and hopefully is every bit as committed to Acie and the significant improvement of the team overall as Acie is. Unlike in years past, I’m still reserving my optimism and hope. Woodson has some proving to do, and it begins with bonding with his players better, and developing a trust. Especially the younger guys, because they need it more and will respond accordingly.
Law’s jumpshot means a lot. It is what will keep defenses honest and allow him to continue penetrating to the basket as well as he does. Looking forward to seeing him in action.
Speedy Claxton, eh? Well, well. This will be interesting, but I hope it doesn’t hinder Law’s development and minutes. I really think this kid can do some good things for us. Of course, if Claxton can remain both healthy and effective, he can also be used a couple of ways: allow us to move Bibby without sacrificing a veteran pg (although sacrificing an accomplished shooter), or be used in trade. I don’t see the second one happening so easily, but who knows what magic Sund can work….assuming he’s allowed to do such things, that is.
Luke Jackson is a shooter that hasn’t had much luck in this league, despite his lottery pick status. I realize that “trying to make it into the league” guys is what summer league is there for, for the most part. It ain’t for seasoned vets. We look elsewhere for those, although I’m not seeing a whole lot of looking going on….

Sekou, THANK YOU. There is other Hawks news other than the daily drama regarding the Joshes. Thanks for “changing the subject”.
So is Horford “too big time” to play in the Summer League? I have mixed feelings about that. Clearly, I don’t want him injured by someone trying to get noticed. But at the same time, I’d like to see how he’s progressing with his offensive game, specifically, any development of his back-to-the-basket skills. But then again, maybe that is not the right forum to display any half-court talents. I don’t know, still seems strange not to see a 2nd year player’s name on the list, even if that 2nd year player is mature (and productive) beyond his NBA experience. Like I said, mixed emotions.

Glad to read about how hard Law is working. I think the guy has all the talent he just has to play his game and stop being so hesitant. I know the injuries slowed him down some but it was times where I wanted him to show the aggressiveness he displayed in college. I think he will be fine. If Speedy is healthy he can really help our perimeter defense but I just dont know if his knee will allow him to play. I hope Solo and J Rich get a lot of minutes in the summer league games. Other than Luke Jackson I cant really say I have heard of the other players. Knowing how tight the B.A.S.G. pockets are I wouldnt be shocked if one or two of those guys on the summer league roster make the team.
Well I googled the guys on that team seeing how I aint know much about them and none really stood out other than Hubbard. Ill copy and paste what I found out about him on one site.
Marcus Hubbard Angelo State - 6’9 230 - DIV II PF/SF 45FG% 38 3PT% 79FT% 1.0SPG 1.1BPG 8.9RPG 1.3APG 21.7PPG
Intriguing may the word that best describes Marcus Hubbard. Despite his 6-9 stature he really cant be classified as a power forward. His body type doesnt suggest hell be able to add serious weight necessary for post play, but what does makes Hubbard a standout is his perimeter shooting. He owns solid range 17 feet from the basket and has developed into a more reliable shooter from three point range. Hubbards downside revolves around inconsistencies in play and aggressiveness when attacking the basket. Hes a year older than most college seniors, and although its not damaging, it may cause observers to question his potential. Ball handling and improved defensive play from the premier is a must for Hubbard to play the small forward position on the pro level, whether in the NBA or NBDL.

Do you think theres a chance for a sign & trade regarding Josh Childress, which team could give offers for what the hawks are looking for. Also how about the hawks signing a player like James Jones, Michael Finley or Brent Barry.

ray good point about Law working out with the video coordinator rather than one of the assistant coaches. I dont want to look to much into it but if thats the morn then it kind of explains why some of our guys are not developing as they should. Maybe we need to make the video guy an assistant coach. Is this the same guy who put together the video before the playoffs to fire up the guys?. SS I know you’re a busy guy but it would be greatly appreciated if you could find out about the other guys this summer as far as them working out trying to improve.

Sounds like Acie is determine to get playing time next season. Man, I like his attitude. If (big if) Speedy has recover from his previous injuries, maybe we can use him or Bibby as trade bait to acquire a big and/or shooter. Then again, we are asking the BASG to make a B-ball acquisition that would improve the team. What was I thinking…
Can you think of another fan base that hated their sports teams owners as much as the ATL fans hate the ASG…
Then again I can. Charlotte Hornets and Seattle Supersonics comes to mind. Uh, the rest is history like a Salim Hawk Jersey….

Skimming the summer league roster, Luke Jackson is about the only free agent that could help the Hawks. He can shoot but can’t play a lick of defense. Other than him, I don’t think any of these players are an upgrade over the guys that make up the Hawks’ current bench. All of them are fringe NBA players. That’s why the Hawks need to get active in free agency in the next week or so.

JOE, definitely think it was the right move for HORFORD. i’m mean, with what he showed in the regular season, and the things he needs to improve on, can easily be addressed in trainin’ camp and pre-season. last thing the HAWKS need is someone like the cat fron UTAH last year’s summer team that was tryin’ to make a name for himself by bein’ an enforcer of some sorts and try to do it with AH on the other end.
to me this is the smartest thing WOODSON has done in 4yrs. and even that is a NO BRAINER!!!!

Sekou, thanks so much for the update on Law… to say the LEAST, it’s VERY REFRESHING… honestly!! Thanks. I’d love to have more information on any of the other players and how their games are progressing.. (Like maybe Marvin Williams working on a 3pt shot!)
Everyone, I thought that coaches couldn’t work with players individually in the summer? I thought that I heard that somewhere… if that’s the case, then that might be the reason why Woodson (or any coaches) are around with the players helping them develop…maybe I’m incorrect…someone tell me if I am!
I REALLY hope that Law can develop a decent shot from the outside..I want to see this guy work hard and get better.. I really think he is the point guard of this team’s future…
Speedy sighting! Wow, you gotta be kidding me! Speedy in the summer league? Sit him on the bench and give the minutes to somebody else… I really tried to give him a chance the past couple of years, but this guy has GOT TO GO. Billy Knight’s era IS PAST US, and this organization needs to cut ties with any left over dead weight!
Good to have some new news besides the Joshes!

some interesting SPECIFIC stats for those who worry about josh smith’s turnovers effect on the game and such.
Career averages of two well known unquestioned all star small forwards who can actually dribble and all that. alongside josh smith career numbers.
lebron james: 27.3ppg, 6.9rpg, 6.6apg, 1.8spg, .8bpg, 3.32 turnovers, 47%fg, 32% 3-pointers
carmelo anthony: 24.4ppg, 6.0rpg, 3.0apg, 1.1spg, .4bpg, 3.1 turnovers, 46%fg, 29% 3-pointers
josh smith: 13.6ppg, 7.4rpg, 2.7apg, 1.1spg, 2.5bpg, 2.5 turnovers, 45%fg, 26% 3-pointers
lebron is the best player. both guys score more as the featured scorers on their teams. josh is not even the featured scorer. the things to notice are the career turnovers, the field goal percentages, and the 3 point shooting. josh isn’t that bad, even though he is not an all star.

Many thanks for the update Sekou. The Speedy info was most intriguing. If there’s even a remote chance that he might go on the injured-retired list, it seems to make sense that the Hawks would use the summer league to determine his real health status. Gotta disagree with you Volman; we should sit Acie and give ALL the summer minutes to Speedy to fully test that knee. We findout it’s not up to speed (no pun intended), we move him to the injured-retired list and be done with his $5+ million cap hit.

Volman come to think of it I think you are correct. I think it was last summer SS mentioned this. Well if that is the case then its still good to see that Law is working hard trying to improve. If he improves as much as I think he can then it will be easier to trade Bibby knowing that Law can take over.

Astro Joe, how clumsy of me. You’re absolutely right, Danny Granger deserves to be on that list. I don’t think we’ll see Larry Legend letting him get away, either. Well, Indy fans can only hope so, anyway.
As for Horford being in the summer league, I have mixed emotions too, but would have to lean towards keeping him out of it. Just for safety’s sake.
CP, good point about Law. I have to think that his aggression throttle-down has more to do with his trying to do what his coach wants him to do and get his teammates involved more than it does anything else. We saw several flashes of the Acie we saw in college, especially in that one game against Charlotte. I have to think there’s no way a guy that aggressive in college suddenly becomes meek in the pros without some sort of particular influences. But that’s just my take, bro’. I could be wrong.
Thanks for the info on Hubbard, by the way. I was just about to try and dig up some.
Volman, I don’t know about that coaching thing either. I don’t recall hearing that, but then I don’t hear everything. I kinda hope that’s not how it goes, but you could be right.

Big Ray, or anybody else… Do you think the Hawks keep someone like Richardson or Mario West, or will they pickup somebody new? I see one of them being gone due to Speedy coming back…I don’t think Richardson had a chance AT ALL, and I think everyone knows that I hated seeing Mario get in the game for 2 seconds here or there! Woodson, give them a chance in the regular season!
It is so nice to look at other Hawks news than the Joshes! Let’s tackle that when more news happens!

Volman, I have to disagree. We’re PAYING Craig, why not play him? If he shows in the Summer League that he is incapable of playing in the NBA again, he’ll more than likely retire. I think? And how can you say the BK era is over, when he either drafted, or brought in, all 5 starters? And the 6th, 7th, and 8th man. lol!! He’s gone, but these are HIS players. Sorta like Wade Phillips(Parcells) and John Gruden(Dungy).

TB, yeah, I know what you’re saying with the Speedy situation… I would not mind playing him in a defensive role with this team, but I do not think he deserves many minutes.. I want to see what this team can do with either 1. Bibby and Law or 2. a MUCH IMPROVED Law with a defensive-minded Speedy as the second PG (only if the Hawks can get a MAJOR piece, and I don’t know who they could get, for Bibby in a trade). I really want to see a healthy Bibby for the entire season, but there’s the business aspect of this whole thing where he might be shipped out before the season is over. Acie will be #1 eventually anyway….he needs to get some time this season though…and we all know that Woody is not the best with handling minutes.
Sorry, but sometimes I rush and hit the “submit” button before reading over my posts… I still think the BK “era” is over in a sense because he’s obviously gone… but I see your point that these are his players, too….
I do think this is the beginning of a “new era” because Sund will be making HUGE decisions within the next couple of years as to the direction that this franchise will go..Either continue to rise or go back to the bottom of the ranks….Will he bring back Billy’s cornerstone players of Smoove and Childress, the two guys who were here from “the beginning”? Will he trade one of them away and try to get some pieces? It’s going to be REALLY fun to find out, won’t it?

I’ve got some catching up to do.
Sekou thanks for the news. The summer roster is a great tidbit to chew on until the free agent thing picks up speed.
On the Speedy Claxton note, I am glad that he is going to test out the knee. I hope he is doing better. As much as we praise Portland, it looks like the Darius Miles medical exception is about to come back and bite their cap space like UGA on a yellow jacket. Pobody’s nerfect.
If Speedy is able to contribute, hopefully he can be that on ball PG defender that we have been missing.
For those taking digs against the assistant video coordinator summer is a great time for everyone to step up. If he wants a shot at a bigger job, now is the time to show he has talent. If I am not mistaken, Miami’s new head coach started as an assistant video guy. Heck, NJ coach was the college hoops manager. A little peek into David Fitzdale’s bio shows that he started as…
If I am not mistaken in a closed industry—job 1 is get in the door. Job 2 is move up.

ESPN.com is reporting that the GS Warriors are going after J. Smith if they do not get Brand to sign with them. They have BIG money available since they lost B. Davis to the Clippers. It looks like Brand is going to resign with the Clippers.

dont anyone kid themselves, there is a need for another point guard and if that can be speedy then fine, let it be him. it would mean the loss of bibby to a big contract would not be as difficult since we hope acie is ready and if healthy speedy is backup. now does anyone think bibby and acie can be healthy the whole year based on last year? maybe three broke points can make it through the year. if speedy isnt ready then he can be sold off to insurance or the same route we took on a point from the wolves a few years back as a but out and salary dump.

Hey Volman, I think Cleveland would give up Verajo for Bibby. Delonte West is Lebrons starting point guard. Enough said! Varejo wants out, and they wanted Bibby before we got him. It’s a perfect match. Varejo is due 5.7 mill. and Bibby 15.2 mill. Maybe they could throw in Gibson or a couple of picks to make the salary thing work.

Speedy should feel fortunate to play in a summer league, heck he should feel grateful to play anywhere at all! He has a lot to prove and hasn’t done much around here except cash those pay-checks! He has no right of passage with - as far as I am concerned he should ask for a buy-out on his contract and apologize for signing here to begin with! He knew deep down inside his heart that his knees were No-Good How could he not?
Big Al Horford on the other hand has nothing to PROVE and should be found no where within 1,000 miles of any summer league play!
Having said that, the whole bench should be playing summer league ball, just to stay sharp! Seeing as how they got NO Playing Time during the regular season.
Not much to blog about really, nothing going on until July 9th - That’s when things become very interesting concerning these Sund - Found - HAWKS! LOL!

We need Bibby, period. Law may be good in time but Bibby makes this squad a serious contender right now. If we get rid of Bibby, we better look to sign a nother combo guard of his caliber (Ellis type) or we’ll go backwards.
There is absolutely no reason for Horford to play Summer League. He’s got nothing to prove and it does no good to work on anything against a bunch of scrubbs. Solo needs as many minutes as he can get.
I think Za Za will have a good season. That Boston series was good for him although I would watch my back if I were him against Boston this year. KG won’t forget that Head butt fiasco. He may not mind getting tossed and suspended during regular season. Rocko beware. Get the cut man ready!!!
I see yall still hatin on Woody. Get over it, the man is here to stay. He’s over the hump now, he’s ready to take us to the next level.

Can we get a moment of silence for the Seattle Supersonics?
Is Marvin Williams pretty torn up about this?
In any event, I’m taking a year off of spending a cent on the NBA. I usually make it to a game or two a year, maybe buy some junk or something, but not this year. 1 year off for me (I’ll watch TV, I know that’s where the NBA makes their real $$, but whatever). I was just disgusted by that whole situation, and hope that OKC owner group loses their shirt in OKC, or runs into some ATL Spirit kinda-trouble. What a debacle.

HHoops* If you have the money to sign Josh, why do a sign & trade? Particularly if he is not your #1 priority. If the ASG’s REAL budget is busted by matching the offer, sure you buddy up to a sign & trade. Remember, the most they can offer him is a 5 yr contract starting at roughly 14.5 MM, i.e. 25% of the cap (that will be announced tomorrow) with raises. They have updated the CBA since JJ got 20MM in year 1.
Volman How’s it going?
See rules in my prior post about the video guy trying to coach during the summer. If I’m Jeremy: Job 1—stay in the NBA. Go for the best deal I can get—i.e. guaranteed contract from anyone. Job 2—move up. It matters that I think I get a chance to play.
All that to say I’d showcase my skills in Utah and take the best offer my agent can get me by mid-August.
Personal good CRAP means Jeremy could be on the move.

Maybe Speedy is ready to come back. That would be great to see him recover and be able to help the Hawks this season. Good luck Speedy in the summer league! All Hawks fans would love to see you recover and do well!
Let’s dream for a minute. Look at my 8:08 post on this blog. If the Warriors would go for the trade that I proposed - J. Smith for Biedrins and Pietrus - and Speedy is healthy, look at this roster:
1-Bibby, Acie, & Speedy(healthy) 2-JJ & Childress 3-Marvin & Pietrus 4-Horford, Solomon & B. Butch 5-Biedrins & Zaza
Wow! Now we have a team that can HUNT!!!
The Warriors are going to have to sign a point guard since they lost B. Davis. If Speedy is healthy, the Warriors might require him to complete the trade.
Resign the Joshes this week, call the Warriors and start working on this deal, invite the Warriors GM to all of the Hawks summer league games(pay his way), and PRAY HARD that Speedy plays great, is pain free, and is healthy!!
O’kay, you can come back to the real world now! The dream is over.

Maybe there’s some “jumpin’ to conclusions” here. Something I do on a regular basis.
Has anyone said definitively that Horford will NOT be on the Summer league roster?
here’s what Sekou said:
I pilfered the Hawks mini-camp roster/summer league roster (not everyone on the mini-camp roster is going to make the cut for Salt Lake City and some guys will join the Hawks summer league crew in Salt Lake City without going through mini-camp)
Could Horford be one of the guys who who will join the crew without going through mini-camp?
If somebody has the facts on this lemme know. Yes, he wasn’t on the list, but obviously not everyone who will play in SLC was listed.
Also, do we know how long his schoolwork this summer was going to take?
And Sekou, could you determine who’s call it would be if he didn’t play?

Astro Joe,
I accidentally went back to the prior blog and saw your comments at the very bottom. Excellent points about the assistant coaches. I posted something about that a blog or so ago, noting that Chicago had surrounded Del Negro with some good quality assistants, guys who were mostly former head coaches, but who could probably do excellent work with less responsibility, in addition to making wonderful interim coaches (unlike Boylan) if things ever fell apart with Del Negro. Like you, I hope for better here…and Woody needs the help. As for the question about who our big man coach is….again, another excellent question, and one that I think most of us have forgotten all about. I recall you bringing this up over a year ago (and probably further back): we need guys within the organization who can work with our players, particularly the younger ones. Then they don’t end up going and seeking out the Olajuwons and Murphys.
Volman, I’m taking your word on the summertime coach-player thing. I really don’t know anything about it. I wonder what the purpose in that policy is?
As for who I think we keep: between just West and Richardson it’s a bit of a tough call. Kind of depends on what both guys do in the league and in camp. I love West’s intensity. He’s an in-your-face-and-your-jock-strap defender. There’s no substitute for that, and we both know Woody likes defense. He’s also fairly athletic, but needs some work on his offensive game. He can make it as a Desmond Mason type (mason is primarily a dunker and slasher), but it would also behoove him to work on his offensive game (shooting, and getting his shot off in general). It helps though, that he hustles like a scalded dog on both ends, grabbing offensive/defensive rebounds, chasing loose balls, and not being afraid to attack the basket aggressively if given the chance. That and he has no problems playing his role.
Richardson is not afraid to shoot. He’s also got some size. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see him enough to see how well he shoots. As for his defense…well, we haven’t gotten to see much of that either. One thing is for sure: if you don’t have straight up sniper capability, then you better be able to lock somebody down. Richardson has done well in the D-league, but has yet to show us very much of that capability outside of the D-league. Personally, I didn’t watch any of his games there.
So right now: my pick is West. He’s a known quantity and a valuable bench player if utilized properly. Richardson has to prove that he’s a gun worth hiring. Both should show us something worthwhile in the next few weeks.
MannyT, no hate here for the video coordinator. Glad somebody was taking an interest in our young pg. And you tagged it right: Spolestra literally came out of the woodwork. Right from behind the camera. The infamous almost-Hawks GM Chris Grant did the same thing. Perhaps not a ringing endorsement, but a success story nonetheless when it comes to getting one’s foot in the door.

HHoops, I’m a huge fan of Smoove having played him in high school when he was at McEachern… Anyway, I think he is the face of this team (along with Horford) and a rising star. I am, however, intrigued about the idea of bringing over Biedrins and Pietrus for Smoove… then of course Horford could move over to the 4, Biedrins at the 5, and Pietrus off of the bench (and a possibility to resign Chill?)
My big thing with that is that the Hawks are giving away a FREAK athletically who might not have realized his potential quite yet. It’s a damned if you do, damned if you don’t situation. I’m glad I’m not Sund!
I have a question for all of you guys, is Biedrins a good enough scorer for the 5 spot? I know he’s a decent rebounder and defender, but I don’t know what his skills are offensively.
Doc, good point about the point guards…All I can say though is that I’d MUCH rather have Bibby, Speedy, and Acie instead of AJ, Lue, and Ivey!
TB, I would be into getting Verajao and something more that the Hawks needs for Bibby. This is only if Speedy has been shown as healthy, and Acie emerges as the point guard of this team’s future! We need to campaign “Booby for Bibby!” Getting Gibson to come off of the bench for some offense would be REALLY nice.. and having Verajao in there for a defensive/rebounding presence would be great.
BOOBY FOR BIBBY! haha. Just thought that was funny.
Manny T, my man, how are things?!?! I’m actually at the beach right now blogging as I watch the waves crash! Good times! It don’t get no betta!!!!!! Did you move up for season tix? I couldn’t get my friend to pay up the extra money (he still owes me from last year!)
Good to be a AJC Blogger with you guys!

Big Ray, great insight on West and Richardson…great read.
People talk about the “it” factor about certain players… I’m not saying Mario West is a star in this league…but he’s got that “extra” level that he can take his intensity to…Like Horford has…where he’s going 150% and out-hustling his counterpart. I just think that West would definitely be a better fit for the team..
When I had high school tryouts I always played this one kid who was a decent scorer and shooter, but never had that intensity to play at a high level… He never made it.
I hope Richardson finds that fire soon… He’s playing for a contract… He’s playing for minutes on an NBA team… he should be playing with the fire to WIN in PRACTICE and any GAMES that he gets in..It’s that simple!

Thanks, Volman. A pretty good assessment on your own part.
Much as I like Josh and what he can do, I’d take Biedrins and Pietrus for him. And we could throw in somebody further down the bench to make it worthwhile, if necessary. The thing about that combo is that Horford then gets a bigger, taller froncourt mate who has no problems rebounding and blocking shots.
Offensively, Biedrins is kinda raw, but what bad can you say about a guy who shot nearly 63% from the field last year? He’s a double-double guy. Besides, we have Horford, who can score down low and has a good-looking 15-footer that I think will be quite reliable in time. In fact, it looked pretty good towards the end of the season and the playoffs. Not only that, but Horford is a very good passing big man. That’s all that’s needed between two post workers. Biedrins can get some easy baskets from Horford passes. I’d say we would be looking at no less than 20 rebounds and 3-5 blocked shots per game between the two. Offensively? Who knows. If we move the ball through the post more, then I’d say both guys could probably combine to produce a solid 25 points per game. It’s not unrealistic to think they couldn’t do even more than that. Combined right now, they are good for 20ppg.
Pietrus has reliable 3-point range and is aggressive enough to score in more than one way. And his defensive capabilities are good. And he would provide the outside shooting that offsets the two low post guys, who are not outside shooters (thereby keeping our frontcourt from being too one-dimensional on the offensive end) What’s not to like?
Of course, there are two things (at least) to consider:
1) Are the Warriors willing to let Biedrins go? I mean, I know they like Brandon Wright, but he’s skinny. So is his clone (Anthony Randolph). And all that’s left after that is Austin Croshere, Richard Hendrix, Kosta Perovic, and whoever they are able to sign (unless they pull of a major coup and get Elton Brand). Croshere hasn’t played 82 regular season games since ‘98-‘99, and the other guys are all rookies. Who’s Kosta Perovic?
2)What’s their asking price? Will it be too high? Considering that they lost Bad Daddy Davis to the Clips…I’m figuring it might be a bit on the high side. Still, I like the deal, if it can be/has to be done.

I’m a huge Demetric Bennett fan. Of course I’m biased because he went to my Alma Mater(USA). But he’s a pure shooter and scorer. He played big against the bigger schools in his career. He had his biggest game this past season against Mississippi State with 39 points. He plays bigger as well. He gets on the boards really nicely.
I don’t know if I honestly want to see Speedy stealing minutes from these guys like he steals money from the organization(ala Hampton).

About Horford: He may not be in SLC for reasons other than schoolwork.
According to the Boston Globe I came across this: Not in select company Celtics guard Rajon Rondo and center Kendrick Perkins will not play for a select team that will scrimmage the US Olympic team July 21-24 in Las Vegas, but several talented young players will challenge the NBA stars. The projected roster includes Timberwolves forward Al Jefferson, Atlanta’s Al Horford, Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge, Philadelphia’s Andre Iguodala, Seattle’s Kevin Durant and Jeff Green, Sacramento’s Kevin Martin, Detroit’s Rodney Stuckey, and Chicago’s Derrick Rose. Boston Globe
If training with the USA Men’s Basketball Team is from July 21-24 how could he be expected to do that and be in SLC for Summer League from July 18-25.

Josh Smith is the future of the successful atlanta hawks, Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, and Al Horford are the ‘big three’ of the future
as far as mike bibby, i say let him play out the whole season and let his contract expire and go off the books, we would rather have his bloated contract off the books than TRADE bibby for another bloated contract, we need that cap space for Horford, Law, and Johnson extentions in the future

I would probably take Richardson over West just for the fact he has nice size and has the ability to help spread the floor. Either way both guys probably make the roster anyway.
I might be wrong but is Peitrus a unrestricted free agent? I like his game and would love to have on the squad but I think he is unrestricted. I read today over on some other b ball site that Golden State said that Josh SMith is not on on their radar but that could be a smoke screen you never know. Golden State will not let Biedrens go though. I was reading about them keeping him and Monta. They are however trying to get rid of Al Harrington. I think its somwhere you can watch the summer league game between Chicago and Miami. If i find it ill try to link it.

To all those pondering crazy sign-and-trade scenarios, remember that if the Hawks try to do a sign-and-trade with J-Smith, he’ll be a Base Year compensation player, meaning his outgoing salary will only count as 50% of his actual salary. For ex:
Say someone wants to offer JS $12M/year in a sign and trade with the Hawks. Smith will become a BYC player and the Hawks can only take back $7.6M in salary. However, any team they trade with that is over the salary cap will have to send back at least $9.5M in salary. So the trade partner has to send $9.5M but the Hawks can only take back $7.6M. Not going to work.
It gets doubly messy when you’re trying to sign-and-trade FA’s for each other, as all parties are likely to be BYC players. FA’s also can have substantial cap holds which would limit a team’s actual salary cap room.

Sign a trade J-Smoove!!!!!
Is not a 3 (poor shooter) nor a 4 (no back-to-the-basket game whatsoever) and deffinitively, he is a knucklehead.
He should be improving his game and working out NOW with AC instead of entertaining Philly’s offer.
Childress is far more valuable than J-Smoove. Just look back at the games against the Celtics and you’ll see who were consistently the most focused and ready for battle Hawks: Horford and Childress and only then J. Johnson.
J-Smoove can sigle handedly win us a few games but his poor decision makes looses us far more.
Just look at the amount of turnovers or his love for launching treys as if he was a 40% shooter from the outside (when he is only a 30% shooter).
Remember: knuckleheads remain knuckleheads for life.
Take a look at Bonzi Wells, Ron Artest… vastly talented, virtually useless!

PREDICTION: Philly will sign Josh Smith to a 5 year 65 million dollar front loaded contract. Why teams don’t try to sign promising restricted free agents is a mystery to me. We already knew before last season Josh was a good player and would continue to improve. He probably could have been had for 5 years at 55 million. Instead we offer 45 million and say take it or leave it. Now the Hawks will pay out the freakin nose if they want to keep him. I just pray that Philly doesn’t do anything crazy and throw 70 million or more at Josh. Tonight teams will find out how much the salary cap will be for next season and Josh will have an offer sheet on wednesday.

Just look at the amount of turnovers or his love for launching treys as if he was a 40% shooter from the outside (when he is only a 30% shooter).
In 07-08 (his 4th season) Josh made 3 turnovers/gm. In KG’s 4th season he made 2.87/gm.
Also Josh only shot 99 3’s in 81 games last year.
1.2/gm is NOT “love” of shooting 3’s particularly since MANY were bailing out a double or triple teamed JJ at the end of the shot clock. Blame those on Woody. At that point Josh is just doing his job.

I wouldn’t take Biedrins and Petris for Josh Smith. Petris is a career sixth man and Biedrins is excelling mostly due to the Nelly system. He may end up being a pretty good center for a Euro but definately not in Josh Smith’s class.

I’m a big fan of Acie Law. I am happy to hear that he’s already working out, taking the appropriate steps for a better second season. I believe he can improve more than Rondo did this year.
I’m tired of the waiting game with the ASG & Josh Smith’s agents… they just need to sit down and show him the money… not too many young dudes can do what he does on the floor… heck not too many older vets can bring what he brings to the table. Sign the kid and move forward. As far as him being a knucklehead… he’s 22… what young dude you know doesn’t have an episode every now and then… he will grow up. He’s had a taste of the Playoffs…
Heck with that being said all the Hawks should come back hungry knowing that they pushed the eventual Champs to 7 games… something that even the Lakers & Kobe couldn’t do. I know I know I’m rambling but this is what blogs are for! LOL

Good catch on Horford playing on the USA Select team against the USA Olympic team. That should provide more than ample opportunity for him to practice his skills. In that setting, he should be safe from careless fouls that could result in a damaging injury.
I saw that Herb Brown has joined his brother’s staff. Sekou, any insight into our coaching staff? Or will the contracts of the Joshes determine if we can afford someone like Bob Hill or someone like Bob Field (the old guy at the YMCA near my house)?
Ray, yeah, I’d love to see some former Hawks join the coaching staff, specifically Antoine Carr as our big man coach (if he’s interested). Also, Kenny Anderson wants to coach, I think he’d be a good add to work with Acie. But at this point, any qualified guy with or without an Atlanta connection would be fine. I just hate the idea of Solomon not having a big man coach to work with in the past few weeks. What’s Antonio Davis or Dale Davis doing these days?

Guys, one of the things that has killed the Hawks in the past is not holding on to our key players. We let them go and they go somewhere else and shine. Lets just keep both Joshes , and get them some good help in here. We are Blessed with some parts (The Joshes) that most NBA teams would love to have. We messed up and didn’t sign them to extensions when we could have, don’t compound the mistake by letting them slip away now.

Man forget all this hub bub bub bluh
If J smooth wants a max contract let him get it from somebody else.
Seriously at the moment if we were to give him that much money we would be over paying and paying for potential and I can think of far to many players who got similar contracts and never reached that potential Shawn Marion Lamar Odom Eddy Curry Chris Kaman Darius Miles
And there are so many others, but there is a difference most of the people on that list can dribble
So basically we are about place our future in the hands of Josh Smith
I know everyone is looking at that as the best possible situation
**Josh Smith is no Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Dwight Howard, Carmelo Anthony, Amare Stoudemire, Chris Paul or anybody else who got that type of money coming off a restricted free agent contract
he is Josh Smith he is exciting, but I dont want excitement I want the Ws I want playoffs and consistency.
Now on the other hand Josh Smith learns how to dribble, develops a consistent Jump shot, and becomes a quick and mobile post player developing into one of the best players in the league and we miss out on a great player
,but lets say we let Josh Smith go and sign Chills
next year we resign bibby cheaper if he performs.
And extend Marvin if develops and is asking for what he is worth
Then we would have enough money to be a player in the year 2010
* And in the year 2010* with enough money to retain Joe Johnson and woo Amare Stoudemire or lebron james or wade, we would have a mature talented team ready for a championship
This is a business baby!!!!!
and i think Mike bibby, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Al horford and signing the best center available on a 2 to 4 year deal isn’t a bad option if signing Josh Smith puts us in financial lockdown
I do want Josh Smith on the team though I just want him for what he is worth

OK, so I guess I have to admit that I’m not a big Pat Riley fan. I used to be, right up to the way he handled SVG and then last season when he quit on his team (to scout college players supposedly). But Beasley & Wade will make a VERY formidable combo (Marion won’t last more than 1 season in Miami if that). Both guys are aggressive, competitive and seem to really enjoy playing the game. Once Beasley learns how to be physical in the NBA (without fouling out), that combo will be straight nasty. Sure, the team needs a TON of other things before they return to elite status, but Wade & Beasley make a nice starting point. Too bad, because I really don’t like Riley. One thing for sure, once they begin to approach elite status, Riley will kick his coach to the curb and return to the court. Dirt bag!

HHops, I could live with that lineup, if you throw in Roger Mason Jr, or Jarvis Hayes. We’d still need a shooter to take some pressure off JJ. And Chills does’nt need to be on the perimeter at the 2. Dont get me wrong, he can play the 1 or the 2, but I like him around the basket. Did’nt you notice how ineffective he was when Woodrow played him on the perimeter, especially at the 1. They dont call him the backdoor bandit for nothing. Or something like that? lol!! Guys dont respect his shot either, so they can play off the ball. Other than that, that lineup is fine. Even though I’m torn over the Josh Smith thing. I like him alot, but he’s our only REAL asset. I just wish some other GM would call Sund and tell him how much he wants Marvin, and would be willing to give up a shooter and a decent big for him. So we end up keeping the Joshes and adding a big and a shooter. Thats’s my dream scenario! Probably wont happen, but I can dream if I want to.

With Philly looking to have locked up the $2.8M trade exemption from the T’Wolves, that could kick the total dollar amount they could give J. Smith up $14M.
Granted, buzz is they are going to go after E. Brand, but if they are unsuccessful in that attempt, that would really put the Hawks in a tough spot to have to match the offer for Smith. $14M would wreck their cap, without unloading Bibby.
How smart could this be for Philly? Imagine if they were able to sign Brand outright and the get Childress with the mid-level? On top of resigning Iggy?
And here we are debating whether or not Kwame Brown would be a good signing …

Just read on Inside Hoops that Philly is supposed to trade Carney and Booth’s contract, without taking any contracts in return. That would give them the ability to offer someone a 5 yr deal, with around 15 mill in the 1st year. I hear they’re after Brand, but if he stays in LA, they’ll probably make Josh Smith an offer. If they offer him 13+ in the 1st year of the deal, I doubt we’d match. This is getting very interesting.

I predict today that Smoove gets an offer of $70M from either Philly or GS. Imagine him running the lanes in Oaktown in front of that crowd? They would love him there. What could we get for him? Let’s try Beidrins/Azubuike/Pietrus/or Brandon Wright combo package. Hey, whoever brought up Varajeo for Bibby…that is an excellent option! He brings excitement to the court and teamed with Horford, that would be a very good frontline with Marvin at the 3. I think the weakness would be with Law, but what I have seen, I like Acie’s demeanor and I think he can grow into the job. Hey, bring us a cheap PG like a Pargo to help Acie. Finally, people are presenting good options here. Losing Smoove may not prove as bad as I initially thought. A 2 for 1 would be a good move, especially if it was Beidrins/Pietrus or Wright/Pietrus could be had. And leave Al alone and let him just prepare himself for another rugged season. In my opinion, moving a Josh or 2 might be the best thing for this franchise to bring us an extra body to rotate. Putting Al at the 4, and give him some frontline toughness assistance. We would have a chance to make noise. I originally thought Bibby was a steal, and he may be good this year, but I didn’t realize that his defense would be so pourous. Oh well, its his last year at that number and we might have to suffer while we wait for someone who needs vet PG help. Come on Cavs, make the call!

Why are we still banking on Marvin as a starter? Mark my words: If we keep Horford at center (though he more than held his own last season) & Marvin as a starting forward, we’ll continue to be manhandled in the paint. Trade Marvin, move Horford to forward, re-sign J-Smoove, & get a rugged center! I know that’s kind of asking a lot, but we could use some thunder to go with our lightening.

Funny how some hawks fans would suggest offering JSmith 12+ Mil would be over paying for his services. Then turn around in the same breathe and suggest trading him and receiving at least two quality players in return. Along with that, suggest moving Horford to the 4 spot.
It seesm to me, that you’re trying to replace his production with 2 and 3 players (remember you move AL to 4 spot). Not trying to change one’s opinion but I’m trying to follow their logic.
How come teams such as Philly and GS (that had better seasons than the Hawks) would consider offering JSmooth all their available caps space?
Instead of doing a sign and trade with Philly for players, could they trade us the rights to Pat Croce (76ers former owner) and we send them the rights to the BASG.

I just finished watching Michael Beasley in Summer league.
I must say that I was not impressed. Guy looked totally uninspired. All he did was stand around and jack up 3’s. I’ll say again, he will struggle playing PF. He’s not good on defense and dissappears when he’s not having every play run for him. I’m sure the fact that it was summer league had something to do with it but 1-13, six fouls and 5 turnovers. He’s also kinda injury prone. Two injuries already.
I can see him at the 3 but not the 4.

So far, this has been one stressful off season for us Hawks fans. First, we had the GM situation. Then, we sweated the Woodson rehiring. Now, we have to sweat the possible loss of one, if not both, of our 2 Joshes. Exactly what is the SAASG trying to accomplish? For a group that’s supposedly determined to resign both players, and is short of cash, they’re following a path that guarantees they’ll have to pay maximum dollar, up front, for both Joshes. These fools are either the biggest liers in the league, or the absolute dumbest.
It appears most teams looking for a PF are more willing to offer a max contract to an established vet like EBrand than Smoove. I believe the rest of the teams interested in Smoove will wait until Philly makes it’s move before acting. There aren’t many teams with the cap space to go after Smoove. And, there might be even fewer teams willing to give up the talent it might take to initiate a sign and trade for him. That might be especially true if Philly is successful in signing EBrand.
If Speedy stays healthy and performs well, along with ALaw, look for Bibby to be traded again by the trade deadline. At that point, his expiring contract would be much more appealing to a team looking to clear cap space for next yr.

The 76ers are not playing around!!! They have just cleared cap space to increase their offer available to Smith or Brand
and I honestly believe Brand is going back to the Clippers so please understand
Smith leaving is a huge possibility and anybody thinking that we should match and offer in 70 mil range is crazy
when you start talking about that much money you should start looking why not to pay him that much money and there are just to many reasons not to

Andrew, that’s ridiculous. Why would you rather play him in the Summer League, where guys are just trying to make a name for themselves? Horford is BIG TIME. If he’s going to play AT ALL, at least let him play against the best. What can he learn from the Summer League, that he does’nt know already? And btw, You do know those summer league cats are 1 injury away, from making an NBA roster. Dont you?

You guys are usually pretty good with these types of questions.
Question-Let’s say that J. Smith gets an offer from another team tomorrow(which will happen), and the Hawks match the offer because the other team does not present an acceptable sign & trade offer to the Hawks. So now J. Smith belongs to the Hawks. Now the same situation occurs with J. Childress and the Hawks match his offer. At this point, the Hawks realize that they are way over the cap and they are looking to make some trades.
Now here’s the question, why would the Hawks even consider a sign & trade instead of just matching the offer to their player and then trade him later, if they get the trade that they are looking for? Wouldn’t this eliminate the Base Year Compensation Player rule and allow the Hawks to get full value of any cap space that the trade gave them??

Well the rumor is that Brand is leaning toward Philly. Is this to assume that they have offered to him already? I guess Golden State might make a run at him, but I would think he would be more inclined to stay here with the muddled free agency situation of the Warriors. So assume if Philly gets Brand, do the Hawks go ahead and make a deal with Smoove, and if so, what would such a deal look like? 6 yr 70 million?
By HHoops

GLW,
I think that you could get J. Smith for less. Maybe 6 yr @ 60 M.
If I am J. Smith, I would go for a 3 yr deal instead of a 6 yr. That way when I am 25, I get a chance to go for the BIG money instead of having to wait until I am 28.
Can you believe that the Hawks are on the verge of nailing down J. Smith for 6 more years? If he pans out to be the player we all seem to think he is going to be, this will be looked back on as a steal!!!

HHOOPS-The Hawks have made it clear to Philly, or any team interested in acquiring the 2 Joshes, it will take a sign and trade to acquire them. They also know the higher the offer, the more they’ll have to give up in a sign and trade. Plus, they’ll have to deal with the almost certain frontloaded contract offered. That makes me wonder. After matching a contract offer, can the matching team renegotiate more favorable terms afterwards?
Philly has only 2 players(Dalembert and Igoudala) who’s salary(or potential salary) and talent will come close to matching the contract they’ll offer Smoove. While not exciting, Dalembert would solve our interior problems, especially on DEF. They would likely have to add another player in the deal, or maybe a future draft pick.
The more we discuss these situations, the more I realize there’s so much we don’t know about how this RFA thing works. Sund, and the SAASG, just might know something we don’t that’s influencing how they intend to keep both Joshes. Let’s hope that’s the case. However, if we lose Smoove and end up with Dalembert and a shooter, we’d still end up being a very good team. We’d be a little less exciting, but just as effective.

HHops, I had better defer that question/answer to MannyT or Ken. I get what you’re saying for the most part, but I don’t know enough to give you a credible, intelligent answer.
Ken, what’s funny is that some people would have you believe that the ASG is so much better than ownership in times past. One person even remarked that there is no anxiety as to whether there will be a team. Well, I hate to break the mirrors and dissipate the smoke…But last I looked, getting into a fight with your most prominent ownership group member (a guy whose cooperation and money is the ONLY reason you could afford to buy both franchises…he owns a 27% stake…the largest by far of the group), botching the franchise assessment (that was SO stupid… and completely avoidable), using the details of the acquisition of one single player (Joe Johnson) as a means to get rid of aforementioned member, bumbling your way (publicly, no less) through the GM hiring process, are all not indicators of stability. I coudl go on and on…But we all believe what we choose to believe, don’t we?
Roan St, I hear ya. I suggested right around the same price: a $55 million counter offer might have been all it took to retain Smith. I was promptly flammed. But then, anybody that holds the ASG in such high regard is going to react that way. I wonder how it will look when he gets offered anywhere from 5 to 20 million more? Not as “smart” as it looks to some right now, I can tell ya that. Even better: the ASG decides not to match and isn’t able to orchestrate a trade that makes us better or even comes close to recouping for what we’ll lose. Hope I’m wrong and that doesn’t happen, because being right will definintely be no prize.
Astro Joe, wait ‘til Riles comes at Beasley with that stupid body-fat nonsense…
Samuel, that was one of the knocks on Beasley. He is supremely talented, but isn’t exactly known as a blue collar worker. I told a friend of mine prior to the draft that Beasley is the only guy I know who could literally talk himself out of the top draft spot (or perhaps even the top 3….but that didn’t happen). I can see him as a 3 as opposed to a 4, but I can see him playing both. It’s entirely possible that the reason he was playing mostly on the perimeter in that first game is because of the cracked sternum he suffered. Not a good sign. We’ll see. Dude is very talented. But so was Derrick Coleman….

HHoops, you are probably right. Smoove probably will do what CP3 just did and sign for 3 years with the player option for the 4th year.
I know Philly makes that trade earlier in the day, but with them doing that, doesnt that make them less likely to go after J Smoove? Philly traded away 2 contracts and a draft pick to get a trade expection. I dont think the ASG would let JSmoove walk without any compensation, so what could Philly realistically offer us? draft picks? Jason Smith? Thaddeus Young? none of that would interest us I dont think.
Ken S, I notice you keep mentioning Dalembert. I dont think Philly is going to give him up in a sign and trade. He is too valuable and is a piece to their future. Also in sign and trades you dont necessarily get back equal value in terms of money or talent. Its just a way to get some compensation for you loss and financially even with a front loaded contract, because Smoove is a BYC player, you can only take back 1/2 of whatever his salary for next year would be, so other players would have to be included even if Philly wanted to do that deal, which I doubt.

If JJ loves Smoove as a teammate, I’m sure we’ll match any offer. If he does’nt, he’ll probably be gone. I’m sure he had something to do with the re-signing of Woody, so he’ll probably have something to do with this. The BASG must value his opinions, if Woody’s still here.

Things literally could not fall into place better than if Brand goes to Philly and the Clips offer Josh Smith. We could let him walk and guarantee ourselves a lottery pick next year, as the Clippers most certainly will not make the playoffs.
We would also not have to worry about seeing Smith in our own conference and he would go out to Clip land and disappear like so many others before him.
Perfect situation, let’s hope Philly signs Brand.

Sekou, doesn’t Okafor make more sense for Clippers than Smith? Now that they have a 20 point scorer at PG, do they really want to add someone who needs 10+ offensive touches along with Thorton, Kaman and Eric Gordon (or Mobley or Maggette if they bring him back)? Seems Okafor is more likely to be a “bang-first” type guy who would fit nicely with that line-up. And Bob Johnson shouldn’t scare anyone with his threats to match an offer.
Actually, I could see them going with a Najera type of PF and letting Thornton bloom into a scoring machine.

Man this is some wicked shiet. All of this wheeling and dealing is about feelings. Not really too much about improving teams if you ask me. But with Brand to the Sixers its all very CLEAR now. I think him and his Bud B Davis ran a fast one on the Warriors. Josh Smith will get the fruits of the Con game also in a Max deal from the Clips. Also Josh Childress will too with a deal from Golden State who just lost Mike P to the Majic. Everybody is going home to “PLAY” except Josh S. OH and what about the Home Team Hawks? Well can you say @#$##itch Slapped? Damn man this is bad. Now we will have 13 mill to give to WHO????? The main thing is no way should Brand or Gilbert A get max deals coming off MAJOR injuries. Brand to the Sixers?
Can you say, “Oh Snap!” …?
I’m thankful that they threw that money at Elton than Josh … and I bet Josh’s agent is upset. That move might have caught them a bit flat footed, and the Hawks catch a sort of break.
But, we’ll have to wait and see. Josh could still just take a one-year deal and be unrestricted next year. At least, I think he could — the question is would be be worth more in that situation, and is it worth taking the chance from an injury/knucklehead standpoint.
If the Hawks come with a near max offer right now, I’d take it — or hope that one of the other teams wants to call the Hawks’ bluff on matching.
But you gotta hand it to the Sixers tonight, signing Brand might be the KG trade of the East this year.
Later,
Don!

Everybody wants Brand. Who wouldn’t? Dude is in his prime, and he’s a sure-fire 20 and 10 guy. Steady as a rock. Steady as a Tim Duncan. Long as he stays healthy. But he likes where he is. I think his biggest thing was this: demand that your organization get serious real quick about putting a better team on the floor and star winning. Now. Then, opt out of your contract to let them know that you mean business. Well, I think the acquisition of Baron Davis is a pretty serious answer. Let’s assume Brand wants to win, and win bad. Why not stick around at $14 million per (or more) with a proven predator such as Baron Davis? Why go to Philly (younger) or Golden State (younger…and coach likes to play small ball too much)? Well, maybe Golden State isn’t so bad, but recall that Brand has said that Miami was the only other place he’d be willing to go. Taking him at his word (and knowing he *ain’t * going to Miami), I say Brand sticks around right where he’s at. Unless of course, he’s more about money than anything else. I don’t know, dude has been a die-hard Clipper. Again, who doesn’t want to play with BD? He will share the ball plenty (unlike Agent Zero), but he’s also quite capable of destroying anybody on his own. Hey Kirilenko…did you ever get that “spaulding” tattoo removed from your face? You know, the one you got in the playoffs against the Warriors….
On the flip side… The Clippers will still have plenty of money if Brand hauls a$$. And they’ll still have Baron Davis. But like our dear ol’ friend Marc Stein (or one of those ESPN pundits) says: I don’t think Baron came there just for the money. I think Elton knew he was coming and is now just playing along. But who knows. Again….if Brand decides he likes Philly or Golden State…the Clippers still have something good. Something just tells me that Davis doesn’t bolt to a team that’s about to lose it’s one major star player, and a guy who would be a great running partner.
Philly wants in. I don’t think they have a chance, but then if Brand is available (more or less), then you’d be stupid not to go after him. Especially when Jamison is already taken, and you really need a guy who can play power forward. No offense to Josh Smith, but he’s not in that league…yet. I think most of us saw that Philly is trading Rodney Carney and some other stuff (Calvin Booth, I think) to Minnesota to clear some cap space. Look, that gives them the ability to throw more money at Brand, but more money isn’t a lock at signing somebody. You want proof? Baron Davis. He left more money on the desk in Golden State to go play for the Clippers. So I think Philly loses that sweepstakes. Here’s the coin flip: Clearing cap space is good for Philly regardless of whether they get Brand. In fact, it puts them in position to sign one of their targeted free agents….plus more. Now they have more breathing room to not only keep their guys, but sign some impact players. Now they can realistically afford both Joshes. And if I’m not mistake…keep Iggy and Louis. But I’d be better off leaving such financial possibilities to Astro Joe, MannyT or somebody else like that. I’m just sayin’-Philly clearing cap space doesn’t mean just targeting Brand. It could very easily mean something else.
I can’t help it: I still Baron Davis left money on the table to go play with Brand and his crew. I mean think about it: if you’re a fireball of a point guard, wouldn’t you want to play with a center, a bonafide star power forward, a promising young small forward, and a capable 2-guard? It beats playing with a power forward, a sg, and two small forwards. Wait a minute….pg, sg, two small forwards, and a power forward. That sounds real familiar…..

BosnianBaller, there aren’t enough basketballs to keep Baron, Gordon, Mobley, Thornton, Kaman, Tim Thomas AND Josh Smith happy. And since when has Donald Sterling managed his team as if each and every year they have to spend all of their cap space?
I think the perfect scenario may be close to happening. Smith is losing out to the fierce free agent competition. Baron, Brand and Maggette have gotten the money so far. And of course, they were all unrestricted free agents. Memphis hasn’t done anything yet… they are still a wild card. I just don’t fear the Clippers.
Funny thing I just discovered. I couldn’t find a Clippers blog on the LA Times website. They have one for the Lakers but not the Clippers. Hey Smith, being a Clipper in LA is like being a GSU Panther in Atlanta.

Or….
I could be dead freakin’ wrong. Brand could actually follow through on his verbal agreement with Philly. Donald Sterling could be as chintzy as he has in the past, and let Elton get away (stuuuuuupid). Getting Davis means you don’t have point guard problems anymore. Getting Davis means you can also attract other free agents. But getting Davis doesn’t replace Elton Brand. But then, that’s apples and oranges…
Astro Joe, you could be right. The Clips may not pursue Smith. But that doesn’t mean Golden State won’t. But then, they may not either. It might be that Smith doesn’t get some huge offer (still not ruling that out right now). Of course, that will make management/ownership look smart as hell. But then….saying that a series of very lucky outcomes that caused teams to look in other directions is like saying Billy Knight was responsible for the ping pong balls bouncing just right so that we didn’t end up giving Phoenix a lottery pick in last year’s draft…

I would post all that crap (from my earlier post) before reading about Smith being in L.A. on “business” and Brand committing to Philadelphia.
Astro Joe, I don’t fear the Clips either, but then, I didn’t fear Philly. Nothing to be afraid of, it’s a business. Either things happen or they don’t. However, I wouldn’t discount L.A. As for there not being enough balls to keep everybody happy…when has that been a problem? That is a way of life in Warrior land. And we all once wondered if Boston would survive three all-stars. Besides, Tim Thomas isn’t the very soul of consistency, and there’s nothing that says that everyobdy who’s there now gets to stay there. I’m willing to bet the Clips take a serious look at both Smith and Harrington (whom the Warriors are looking to deal). Problem is…the Warriors want a pg in return.
Here’s another thought/question: If L.A. takes a liking to Smith (and vice versa), and we got into some kind of sign and trade with them…what would we get or what would be desirable? Not saying that it will happen or that I want it to, but something to think about, if only briefly.

I guess I was away too long. Lot’s of things are bubbling up.
Volman I’ll be in 108 next season. I want more free stuff ;-)
HHoops You are tring to make me think, but this one is easy. It’s base year compensation. Josh would have that 1/2 value in trades until June 30, 2009. I forget who, but this applied to one of the guys traded on draft night. As a result that deal isn’t official until tomorrow.
Notice what Philly gave up to clear cap space. Marginal players and a draft pick that probably won’t be in the lottery if they get Brand. That’s the type of talent you get if you sign & trade with a team that has cap space. If you S&T with a cap locked team, they may give you a better, but not great player, because they have no alternatives but working with another team to get a free agent worth more than the mid level exception.
I would put the odds of Dalambert landing here in a sign & trade right next to the odds of me being in that Manatee Meets the Mermaids movie that ray was cooking up a week or so ago. I think I have a better chance of becoming a millionaire in my sleep.
The more we have to pay to keep a pair of Joshes, the more likely Bibby gets moved for 2 players IF the REAL budget is an issue. At the same time, the way the dominos fall will dictate who needs Josh. If it’s the Clippers, do they go after a guy more like Brand (i.e. Okafor) who plays close to the basket, or a big runner that can effectively chase guys out to the 3 pt line like Smith (or the trade available Lamar Odum?)
FYI—Once the offer sheet is signed, there are no more RFA negotiations. It is stay or go. The team that gets the player, gets the exact contract. That is why the team on the attack usually puts things in the offer that are a PAIN (yup that professional athletics ineffective normalization thing) to the defending team. PAIN things include opt out years, front loading, special clauses like trade kickers.
Remember the MAX any of these year 4 RFAs can get next season is 25% of the cap which should be about %14-14.5 million. Then the raises kick in in future years depending on who is offering the deal. Defending teams get the honor of being able to pay higher raises which is one reason why some players prefer the S&T to get more money.
I really like the NBA and this week of waiting. It gives agents time to hear things and cook up all sorts of options if htey are wheeling and dealing. Imagine if Brand signs that deal at 12:01 and Baron says—I’m not going to the Clips w/o another serious player. What will a Sterling cheapskate owner do?
I love this game…even the complex financial parts.
Good CRAP for some Brand-ed team tomorrow.

A lot of those Clippers are not under contract for next season. Some opted out and others had their contract expire. We won’t get back any of those players that are not under contract right now. It is too much trouble to resign them and deal with base year compensation. The main S&T guy gets special treatment under the rules, everyone else follows the regular trade guidelines.
My REAL concern. Sund silence. I hope he has something going on the down low. I sit and watch for free. If he’s got the big job, I hope his texting thumbs have been very active for the past week. We don’t have to sign guys tomorrow, but we are hopefully lining things up.

Now that Brand has agreed to a contract with the Sixers, keeping both Smith and Childress appears to be much more likely for the Hawks, who can offer more lucrative contracts than any other team. They can offer a six-year deal as opposed to the maximum five that other teams can offer.
Wow! After all the moaning and groaning. After people were just so sure that Smith was going to be a Sixer(they had a jersey with his name on it), the Sixers zagged and came to terms with Brand.

If I’m Sterling (i.e. cheap) I call Philly with this offer.
You want Brand and Baron doesn’t want to play w/o him. Let’s S&T Brand, but I get Miller back. More cap room and you don’t have to pay either Davis or Brand. Philly can make the agreement and sign Davis first with the cap space, then do the Brand deal.
Cheapo gets to use a massive amount of cap space to do as much (or as little) as he pleases.
Max offers around on RFAs until someone bites. Smith, Okafor, Iggy.
If none bite, he gets to keep lots of cash and be the big banana in next summers free agency.
The Clips can have buckets of cash and PAIN ;-)

From Sekou’s article:
“Suddenly, the threat of having to match a huge, front-loaded offer for Smith is gone for the Hawks.”
I wouldn’t jump to conclusions so quick… the Warriors now are an even bigger threat to front-load a ridiculous offer to Smith than the Sixers could. To be honest the Hawks might have been better off with the Sixers offering Josh a contract than the Warriors. HoopsHype says the Warriors have a payroll next year of $30 million, nearly 1/3 of which is Adonal Foyle’s expiring contract.
Sorry if I’m repeating something someone else said… I didn’t really take the time to go back and read what was said about this earlier.

josh smith is now in los angeles. Great so now the sixers are supposed to get elton brand. That just means that other teams are taking a shot at josh. we are not out of the woods yet it seems. still have the warriors and the clippers.

I’m with HHoops on the contract length too… the way things are looking right now (in other words, if Josh can’t get all the money he’s looking for) he’s definitely gonna sign for fewer years on this deal.

Scratch my previous post…. just saw that the dumbazz Warriors decided to give Corey Maggette $50 million a year. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Excellent. Y’all thought $12 million per year for Josh was bad… $50 million for Maggette makes Rashard Lewis look underpaid.
I don’t see the Clippers offering J-Smoove anything the Hawks are incapable of matching, after getting Baron.
In other news: the new Nas album is fire.

not to shabby for the 22 yr old smith to end up second to a 29 multi-year all star. in the end it was sterling playing hard ball that sent brand packing, essentially wanting to low ball him a bit after playing in a crappy organization.
interesting development for smith to be possibly be courted by an organization like the clips, the essence of the meaning out of the pan and into the fire. or maybe he can be rescued by nellie and the warriors who play a style that would make smith all world.
the game plays on and grandma is nowhere to be seen. she may have found a rest spot not too far from the highway, just hope she hasnt found a side road detour that wont allow her back onto the road quickly. is she singing here comes the sund?

Timing, do you hear that echo? That’s me laughing with you at me. Seriously, I think it is pretty funny. My timing absolutley sucked. Of course, I’m still not 100 percent sure Elton’s gonna do it. If he does though…the East gets that much tougher and Philly goes from a little bit better than us to a lot better than us…and several other eatern teams that were previously close. Of course, they would need to retain some of their other talents as well (like Iguodala and Louis).
As for signing our own guys. I’m of two minds there. I’d like to keep JSmoove and JChill, but I think Chill is the key to us getting some of the other pieces we need. If not him, then Bibby and/or Marvin. Of course, we might not see Bibby go: he’s a veteran pg who also happens to be the second of just two shooters on the team. Hmmmm.
Najeh,
I wouldn’t jump the gun on this either. Brand hasn’t signed that contract yet. Like you said, if he does, that still leaves other teams who are interested in our services. The warriors are desperate and practically reeling right now. Or so it seems. They’re trying to get rid of Harrington to get another pg. They’ll also want an impact player. Of course, the Clippers are in the mix as well. And maybe some other teams we don’t know about. But we don’t know. Sekou did say that Josh and his agent are in L.A. right now.
Of course, we could just assume that the ASG has had this under control from the get-go. But then, as I said earlier-isn’t that kind of like saying that Billy Knight handled those ping pong balls just right in last year’s draft, and made sure we didn’t drop a lottery pick to Phoenix?

kirknga The Hawks will always have th eupper hand with their own restricted free agents. I think the question is will they hit that secret REAL cap number and begin to do funky things to get back within their budget.
Sterling cheapo and the Warriors will still have buckets o cash if Brand comes east.
You want to make this scary, find a team that wants to use their trade exception. Now base year compensation is less of an issue. A $14 million dollar BYC player could get traded for a $4 million dollar player if that team has a $3 Million trade exception. How’s that for shedding salary. Might be appealing if you are an over the cap team with a trade exception in search of a good young player.
Look for the check marks in the 3rd column if you want to play trade exception conspiracy theory!

Daaaaaang. The Warriors are desperate. Looks like we are getting luckier and luckier by the second. I don’t figure the Sterling will make too big of a pitch either. He pinches a penny so hard, it would make Abe Lincoln yell…One possible exception: if Brand is out, then Baron Davis might say “hey dude, sign another guy who can run and play or this ain’t gonna work out at all.” Who knows.
I don’t think the Warriors are done dealing yet. Not if they want to recoup. Maggette makes up for Pietrus, but kinda duplicates Jackson. Well,he’s better abotu getting to the basket, but…
Speaking of Pietrus, dadgummit if we didn’t let that one get away from us. I’m happy if we can re-sign the Joshes, but it just can’t stay like this. Standing pat is not acting smartly, especially while other teams are getting better and better.

this whole free agency thing is like a drama or soap opera, brand leaves the clippers to sixers for more money after saying that he will stay with the clippers, baron davis leaves warriors for the clippers to play with brand then gets rejected, josh smith goes to philly and is impressed by their courtship to him only to be dropped only hours before signing free agents starts, maggette goes to the warriors, now the warriors and clippers now have more money, and the hawks dodge a bullet without lifting a finger, sixers fans now thinking that they are the second best team in the east and that they should go back to red, white, and blue uniforms; if i was josh smith i wouldnt go to the west especially to the clippers or warriors because the west is still tough and his market will go down, all this just crazy and its only beginning

I said that last week when everyone was all worked up about Smith going to Philly. But we had people who held that it was a certainty that Smith would be a Sixer and that ASG was playing a weak hand.
If Smith does not receive an offer then the Hawks are going to sign him at more favorable terms.
ASG is playing this one right!

Good point, Manny. And I would love for the ASG to prove that they are committed to winning and doing the things it takes to put together a winning team. Getting lucky because other players and teams do things that cause ripple effects/chain reactions throughout the league just isn’t evidence of good pre-planning or thinking on the fly, I don’t care how you spin it. Maybe we’ll get lucky (again) and Sterling will continue his scroogish ways, offering Smoove a less desirable, lower contract and we can match or otherwise welcome him with open arms.
I just really hope we make other moves as well. Of course, what happens with Smoove might be the driving factor behind all this waiting. Maybe Sund is waiting for it to play out, then he’ll jump in the pond and try to do whatever he must to get things rolling. Problem is, people are “signing” contracts left and right…who’s gonna be left? Oh, I forgot. Some scrubs from the summer league that Woody won’t play. More evidence of just plain smart planning. Heh.
Seriously, I hope not…

If I miss on Ricky and Woody. So what. All i’m saying is that Woody has been coaching for 3 freakin years with a whack as_ roster full of youngsters and scrubbs. The guy finally gives the city some hope with a tremendous showing in the playoffs and yall want to get rid of him. Please!! Yall all have jobs. I guess. Who here didn’t take two or three years to really learn their job?

The Sixers going with Brand is actually funny. Smoov and his agent talked all this talk about how great the Sixers is such a great organization. They said things like Sixers were really genuine and professional. Yeah, completely wining & dining someone and then completely forgetting about them the next week…that is real “genuine” and “professional.”
I am not trying to attack Smoov and his agent, but they really thought they were going to make some big moves in Philly and come out with a max contract. They need to realize that this is a BUSINESS.
Let this be a lesson, Smoov: Don’t count your chickens before they hatch!

yeah samuel i really want you to be right in the end. untimately and unfortunately if the BASG continue to hope the fall out plays their way then they will be sorely disappointed more often than not. maybe you see something to be confident about in the gm and the coach, personally i cant see giving any such thing to BASG just yet. the best thing they have done is to watch a ball fall out like it was vegas in their four years at the helm.
read the article above if you want to see a team that is doing it without luck. havent we begun to learn that the aggressive proactive teams can go from out of the playoffs one year to the finals the next by being smart and aggressive or maybe from 18 wins to about sixty wins in less than 3 years?

kirknga looks like you are skipped the 2nd half of that post to make your point. Very political move in an election year. Yes we agree that the Hawks have the last say on RFAs. The key part is the REAL budget. As much as one may have the right to match an offer, are you willing to do so? This is a fair question when you have to do this dance twice in the same summer. It goes back to Ando’s argument about paying a lot more for the same 37 win team. Like the Texas Rangers said several years ago about A-Rod—we can lose w/o your big salary. Something has to happen to make the overall team better. If that means a Josh has to go, then a Josh should go.
doc that article about Bower was nice. He gets it. Reminds me of that baseball guy in Mississippi—Wellman. He gets Francoeur. He understands that his way to success is to be Vlad-like and swing at pitches that look good to him even if they are not strikes—as long as he can hit them.
People that get the play to your strengths thing can usually make their teams better.
As long as there is Sund-dialing in the background, I can be patient with free agency. I just don’t want to hear that granny was saying let’s get this jalopy moving and Sund was still looking for the keys.
If ESPN’s cap number is correct at $58.68 million, the MAX that can be offered to any yr 4 RFA is $14.67 million in the first year of a max contract.

Astro Joe I think the clips situation could work b/c Smoove and Kaman don’t need the ball to be effective on the court.Baron Davis can score and dish it out 7.6 APG last year.Plus Dunleavey is a good enough coach to make it happen.

No I didn’t skip it. I was merely pointing out that when I raised the possibility that gloom and doom wasn’t called for last week and that ASG might, just might, be playing things correctly, I was met with derision.
And people were not talking about the budget either, they were talking about how awful it was that the Hawks let Smith go. They were talking about how exciting he was and how many tickets he would surely sell if only his services were retained.
So I’ll suggest now what I did last week when I broke into the echo chamber. Everybody take a deep breath, don’t get all down, the Hawks can still put an improved team on the court with or without Smith.
By ray

Bosnian Baller, it could work. Guys like Davis and Mobley are the vocal influence Josh Smith needs. Having said that, I don’t want it to work, because that means we lose Smith. I’m only happy with that if we can somehow get better during that transaction or afterward.
Losing Smith, then standing around with money left while all the worthwhile free agents are already gone? Not good. That’s how we end up with scrubs, has-beens, and walking injury types. But hey, we have ultra-smart owners, so that could never happen. Right?
Manny…that would be the question that is so conveniently ignored. Hoping for the best, because as we’ve been saying, it’s put up or shut up time.
Doc, that was a good link. As you and Astro Joe keep saying, these things start at the top…Kevin Pritchard wouldn’t be so shrewd without Paul Allen’s blessing. Jeff Bower wouldn’t fare so well without George Shinn. Who does R.C. Buford answer to? And so on and so forth.

Yeah, still way too soon to say we are in the clear… I just feel a lot better about it now that the Warriors seem to be out of the picture. I still can’t believe they gave Maggette $10 million a year. Still gotta watch out for the Clips and who knows who else. I’m still thinking about what HHoops said earlier, about Josh signing for a short term deal this time around — if the Hawks are smart they will offer him something long-term right about now that won’t tie them up financially instead of having some other team force them into paying him big bucks in three years. Don’t forget Joe Johnson and Al Horford need to be extended in a few years too.

Wow, even with the news this evening, still no hope. Not only that, no love at all for team and management.
Not one positive thing to talk about, it’s all so bleak.
Emphasis must be placed on what could go wrong, what should be, and if only. Assess blame and doubt.
Little positive energy flowing for our team, they deserve better, Smith or no, if management is so bad, shouldn’t the team at least be able to look to it’s fans for optimism?

Bosnian Baller, it’s not that I think all hope is gone if Smith goes. I’m just concerned if we let him walk and then don’t add good players to this team.
Of course, Sund and the ASG aren’t going to whisper their every move to us. It would be silly to expect that. But I find it odd that other teams are continually making moves in an effort to get better. I hope our contingency plans are solid. If not, we’ll be standing around again, offering contracts to guys like Speedy Claxton, Anthony Johnson, and Lorenzen Wright. Maybe Lue will come back.
As for this team, I’ll watch them when they’re losing as well as when they’re winning. Always have. Much love for the team. Unfortunately for us, the team isn’t playing right now. Nope, the ball is in the ownership’s court. That’s the game we’re watching. As I said earlier in this blog, can’t wait to see the summer league. I wanna see Law TEARING IT UP.

somebody that controls the player movements should read this for real
the hawks need to get rid of speedy. sign the joshes… law should be the back up for Bibby. Jeramey Richardson should get more playing time because that boy can shoot better then salim.. trade Marvin Williams, Speedy Caxton and zaza for jermaine Oneal… then u can have Al Horford actually playin power forward. starting five be 1. Mike Bibby 2. Joe Johnson 3. josh smith 4. Al Horford 5. Jermaine Oneal 6. josh childress ( 6 man of the year 2009)
then u can have Jeramey Richardson come in just to score like Boston did for Chauncey Billips. and Law and Childress come in a lot… and when Jeramey Richardson out. Horford can play center and childrish could go in there.. and Oneal a free agent so we might not have to trade any body to get him.. but we gotta sign the joshes first.. they are the most important thing right now.. sorry Marvin.. but u can only have potential for so long. GOTTA START THINKING CHAMPIONSHIP….. NOW NOT LATER
