I heard it was a good one
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
SMYRNA - Like most of you, I had big plans for Game 1 of the NBA Finals Thursday night.
And it didn’t matter that the game took longer to get here than that rebate check (thank you David Stern and the NBA schedule makers who think it’s cool to start the Finals six weeks after the completion of the conference finals) Bush and the boys promised.
The 9:30 (or somewhere close to it) tip off is what did me in, though. Everything was going according to plan during the first half of the Celtics’ 98-88 win. But the fatigue set in around halftime, when the Lakers appeared to be in tenuous control of the action.
Midway through the third quarter, however, seems appeared to be changing. And by the time I fell asleep late in the third, it was anyone’s game. So I wasn’t stunned to see the 10-point margin of victory for the Celtics this morning.
The Celtics are doing the same exact thing they were doing a month ago when they were battling the Hawks in that first round series. They haven’t changed their mode of operation one iota since then, and that’s a testament to the job Doc Rivers (who gets Mike Woodson-like venom thrown his way in Boston) has done all season.
Rivers has kept his team focused on the bigger prize and not the immediate result of each and every second of every game. The Celtics made a commitment to getting to this stage, a place I frankly wasn’t sure they’d be able to reach after Game 4 of that series against the Hawks.
But I have give credit where it’s due, the Celtics took shots from the Hawks, Cavaliers and Pistons and still found a way to get here. And they don’t appear to be looking back. My feeling before the Hawks-Celtics series was that Paul Pierce was going to be the Celtics’ best matchup nightmare in that series and really throughout the duration of the Celtics’ playoff run. And that’s held true.
Again, I go back to the job Rivers has done. He’s always managed to play to that strength, even when things got tight and the easy fallback option would have been to play through Kevin Garnett, who isn’t the same type of offensive catalyst that Pierce can be when he’s on his game (Pierce isn’t Kobe Bryant, of course, but he has that same stomp-on-your-throat attitude when the game is on the line and the ball is in his hands).
What Rivers told his team after Pierce went down with that leg injury (only to pull the hero routine and come back with those two huge 3-pointers) was nothing short of genius. He could have spent the entire timeout scribbling away on that little clipboard. But all the Xs and Os in the world don’t make a difference if you can’t properly motivate your guys. That should be obvious by now.
All that said, the Lakers could still be in the process of winning this thing in five or six games - the prediction of most of the so-called pundits (you know, all those know-it-alls that tell us year after year that the Eastern Conference team has no chance against the mighty Western Conference).
But I’m done underestimating these Celtics. We should all know better by now. Just like you had your doubts about them when they were belly crawling their way through that series with the Hawks.
This series is up for grabs.
Now if I could just stay up late enough to watch it while it’s happening everything will be fine.

That was one of the better games i’ve seen this playoffs. I still believe that LA will take the series, but i actually found myself pulling for the celtics. I dont really care for Paul Pierce-but the boi has game and showed sum grit after going down with his injury.
I think the main reason i pulling for Boston was -KG….. thats my dude and i really would like to see him get a ring.
From the last blog- Najeh WTF are you talkn about dude …… you ask why would anyone respond to that azz hole ——- The question should be why wouldnt u respond—

Good game last nite. I agree, Lakers look like they ran out of steam and look confused in the 4th. Terrell B, Rondo quickness/def gave Fisher fits. KG manhandle Gasol and Odom. Ray stoodup to Kobe and didn’t shy away from the physical play. Boston played great def on Kobe by using multiply players to wear him down during the game. Of course, Paul’s Willis Reed impersonation motivated his teammates and inspired the fans. Game 2 will be interesting. I still think Boston need to win that game more than LA does….

Doc, looks like the Bucks are willing to deal your boy Yi. I like him as well. I think the Bucks have what we need to improve to the next level. I would like to see the Hawks pursue these current Bucks (in this order): REDD, Yi and Charlie V. Any one or combination of those players would help us tremendously…

In order to get something you have to give up something (unless your the Lakers and the NBA is desperate to have you make the Finals for ratings purposes). Who would the Hawks give up to obtain any of those players? Sometimes you guys need to think about the big picture when playing Fantasy GM. Atlanta needs to keep their own first before even thinking about any deals.
Sekou you missed a Willis Reed like comeback from Paul Pierce last night. I can’t believe Bill Plaschke thought it was staged! Boy, conspiracy theorists come out the woodwork when their team loses don’t they?
I expect a great series of punch-counterpunch from these teams.

Paul Pierce always acts like a baby when he gets knocked around. After he’s done with a good cry he gets back in the game. It’s nothing new with him. It’s one of the reasons he could never climb into the elite NBA player status.

Is it just me or did Paul Pierce fake that injury? Perkins barely touched him when he went down, he couldn’t walk, and then he sprints around seconds later? Sounded and looked fishy to me, Plaschke was right, looked more like professional wrestling. The only thing missing was him hulking up.
As for the Hawks, I’d gladly take a Flip Saunders-Woody swap, but if it comes down to it, I guess I’ll trust JJ’s take on the coaching.

So I have two points to make today
First the Celtics Not how great that victory was because I am really not rooting for them, but do have to give them props for staying tough when Paul went down cause I think they either stayed even or pulled ahead.
That being said Paul Pierce definitely is one for the dramatic. A matter of fact the whole Celtics team does it. Rondo is the most frequent and easy to catch. Watch anytime he goes to the basket and falls down he is holding something crawling up into a ball and the popping up to be A okay. The most ridiculous of these was when Marvin Williams knocked him on his butt. He milked it he milks all of them. And Paul Pierce last night was no different.
Now the second point
Aww the second point this one might cause a tad bit of anger, but just open our minds to the this possibility.
I applaud the Celtics for their effort, but I don’t see them winning. I do want them to win one though in the next three years.
This one is on Marvin Williams and his ability to become one of the best players in the NBA.
Marvin Williams could turn into Paul Pierce!!!!!! yeah i said it I said it!!
Now I will save you all time in going to compare stats Paul Pierce came out balling averaging more point than Marvin Williams currently does.
To debate that I can only say he had a good number of veterans around him and he was a part of the offense (that i do not know)
but i do know the only part of the offense here is Joe
NOw why would i say this?? Why would i say that the stumbling fumbling Marvin Williams is anything like Paul Pierce??
Because Paul Pierce is just as fumbling and stumbling as Marvin is, but he developed body control.
So to shorten this lets not trade Marvin lets keep him get a new coach and have our own beastly trio.
and another point the only person i can think of who gets to the basket and either creates contact or scores when the team really needs it is Marvin!!
JOe don’t do it!!

The NBA…like MLB is removing the next generation by playing games so late. Don’t look now but to the bulk of the population, the NBA is IRRELEVANT(but it’s actually good hoops). The advatnage that MLB has is that games are every day. But once the World Series comes around kids don’t get to watch.
This series is not even CLOSE to the Celtics-Lakers of the 80’s despite all the pundits and media force-feeding us. There were hall of famers all over both teams. Come on, gimme a break.

Lakers are still gonna take this series in 5. The Sixers managed to win a game when they played the Lakers in the finals too. Doesn’t mean a thing. Kobe’s not gonna get shut down in the 4th quarter like that again.
Imus, there’s only one reason why I post on this blog — to say whatever the f-ck I feel like. I don’t come here to prove how big my testicles are to some 14 year old inbred redneck from Forsyth County on his mom’s laptop. If someone wants to throw anti-black racial slurs at me the joke’s on him, because I’m not black.

RealSquawk, Pierce may have been fumbling and bumbling at some point but he’s always been a physical, strong bully of a swingman. He’s always had that mentality. Marvin has the mentality of a mouse. Sure, he can probably develop better body control, but the chances of him ever becoming an assertive, clutch player like Pierce are kinda slim, in my opinion. Completely changing your mindset is a lot different — I would say a lot tougher — than improving a physical skill.

You would think that since the NBA insists on having the games sooo late for us folks in the East, they would at least have one of the games on Friday or Saturday night so people who get up early to work M-F would get a break and could actually stay up and watch and entire game….But no, game 2 isn’t until late Sunday night…

I do agree with you. Marvin Williams isn’t assertive, but I am pretty sure that can change with a few inspiring words and a new offense.
Marvin Williams might be deferring out of habit he came off the bench at UNC then has been no higher than the third option on this team when he should really have been the second.
And I don’t think he is unassertive he is just trying to play within the offensive system

Realsquak, Paul NEVER fumbeled. Marvin RUSHES and gets to deep in the paint to do anything with the ball. Paul’s nickname in HS was molases b/c he played so SLOW. He’s gotten a lot faster I might ad but he was never out of control. Just slow and effective.
I like Marvin’s game though. I say if we don’t see any significant improvement by the all-star break then the Hawks should consider dealing him.
He needs to contest jump shoters better. Rebound like he did for spurts in the playoffs and learn to effectively convert at the basket in traffic……a 3pt shot would be nice too but it’s not necessary.

Realsqwak- deffering out of habit is no excuse especially after you’ve been in the league for 3 years -look at AL Horford- They guy came in and got right in the mix of things and earned his respect…….. Marvin is just to passive and clumsy IMO…….. If he doesnt show any signs of improvement next year i say trade him with Bibby for sumone who can come in and help us immediately……
I would rather have a player with moderate talent who works hard to improve and leaves everything he’s got on the floor vs. a player with great talent that does’nt play hard or is just passive. I hope marvin comes back this year with a vengence to shut us all the hell up but until then i gotta call it like I see it.

Sekou you should be able to use a DVR as a business expense. Time for a new accountant?
I was down from blogging due to a hang nail. It hurt and rolled around on the ground. I thought I might not blog for a week. Then I saw Paul Pierce. I put that little butterfly bandage on and I am back! LOL
I wasn’t impressed. Not saying he wasn’t injured, but I am so tired of mediots (media idiots) making a big deal out of it like he was Willis Reed or Nancy Kerrigan after meeting the Tonya Harding gang. He was out as long as someone who had to pee…hmmmm
Perkins was out longer. He might actually be hurt, but you hear nothing about him.
After implying that Pierce seemed a little soft last night (which he admitted in an interview today,) I will say that Marvin needs a little nasty streak to move up a level. All those drives to the basket…imagine how many more might be successful (hoop or foul) if he just had 20% more roughneck in him. Even when he accidentally slammed Rondo, you knew that wasn’t him. The result was more a clumsy attempt to stop the play and catch the guy. He grew up in Seattle—how about a little Xavier McDaniel streak. A little off season 1 on 1 no foul showdown twice a week during the summer.
Free Woody to talk with Detroit. Larry Drew probably misses the job unless no one else wants it. His best shot to move up was to get that 20-30 game trial as interim coach. I still think Woody stays and gets a multi year extension here, but the situation will be much better if the ASG and Sund don’t block him on the Detroit interview.
I realize that Flip won’t come within a bordering state of here. He gets $5.5 Mil from Detroit to not coach next season. Why mess up your rep by getting in the midst of our confusion?
richbrave Haven’t seen you in a few days. Hope all is well. I saw that Shawn Springs is not happy with the Skins. Why didn’t big bucks Snyder toss his wallet into the Pacman deal before his uncle Jerry?

Blechhh…where’d these beat writer-hating morons come from?
I’m tired of trolls. Perhaps I’ll change my name to troll destroyer. Naw, then I’d sound like the trolls…
I’m not buying Pierce’s act. Carried off the court by teammates, rolled out in a wheel chair, then comes back out the tunnel and as soon as the crowd can see him, he’s dancing like Apollo Creed (y’all know where I’m comin’ from). Whatever. I do know this: his stunt revved up the crowd and his teammates, and he had one heck of a clutch performance. He was the difference in the end. Gotta give credit where credit is due. Dude produced.
Marvin Williams and Paul Pierce are NOT the same class of player. Pierce was bringin’ it in Kansas. He never stopped bringin’ it in the League. I have no particular love for the cat, but he can straight up ball. Marvin is the guy that people keep saying the same thing about year after year: “He looks like he’s turning the corner and justifying his lofty draft status from ‘05.” Whatever. It must be one hell of a corner, because he hasn’t turned it yet…And if he does the exact same thing this coming year (assuming he’s on the roster, which he probably will be), then you pretty much have what you see. And I won’t want to hear any more about it.
Extend the shooting range to legit 3-point threat and gain the ability to EFFECTIVELY go to the basket CONSISTENTLY. In other words, convert and get to the line more. Otherwise, same ol’ same ol’.
Uh…when are we getting word on the coaching situation?

SalimFan that article is all over the place. I believe it is an AP story that everyone picked up.
I get the impression that the ASG is waiting until the last possible moment to announce what will happen. The messy part of that is how others will view the organization. Even if they want to keep him, there is still an offer and acceptance thing that has to happen. He isn’t under contract a month from now.
Your AAU pals might be running the Rocky Mountain Revue team. A team that is full of guys from a local pick up game (as there hasn’t been any word on the futures of the GM staff that would find these players.)
myk if you start combining those, you get a bigger playbook. Play #4 could be fake 1, do 2. Play #5 - fake 2, do 1. Now that he has Bibby, he might have 10 plays. Now that Al’s not a rookie, maybe he can get a play.

I want to comment on the Marvin Williams issue. I know why he has problems driving hard to the basket. I had the same problem when I was in my prime as a player. At 6’1” I could take one step and dunk with both hands easily. However, whenever I drove hard to the basket, I couldn’t elevate and finish strong at the rim. That was because I was a vertical jumper, like DWilkins, not a horizontal jumper, like MJordan or JErving. Marvin has the same problem, and it affects his drives to the baskets. I had to resort to taking a skip to gather both legs under me and power straight up to the rim. DWilkins did the same thing, if you can remember.
Marvin is strong, has a deadly jumpshot and is a tremendous vertical leaper. He needs to improve his ballhandling skills and his shooting range, but not at the expense of losing his midrange accuracy. With a quick, fast, penetrating PG like Ford, Calderon or Law, Marvin could be very effective in a penetrate and dish OFF. Add an OFF that runs him off picks to get him open shots and consistently involved in the OFF, and he could easily average 18-20PPG. Marvin is an efficient scorer and goes to the FT line frenquently.
I don’t understand all of this get rid of Marvin crap. He was the 4th option on the team behind JJ, Bibby and Smoove. He had no plays run for him, like Chills, yet he still managed to average about 15PPG without taking many shots and he consistently got to the FT line. You don’t get rid of a player like this, you find ways to maximize his talents and overall contributions.

Manny, I din’t know it was AP, I was just sying that in that article that was the first i’d heard of Sund HINTING at a possible date (sometime next week, I hope) to address his Findings, and decisions with the media.
Ken, I hear ya. I think when people criticize Marvin they forget that he doesn’t have plays ran for him, and unlike chills, he doesn’t have a nose for rebounding loose balls very well YET. Mos of the time he’s too far away from the basket (on offense) to pick up an ofensive rebound and convert. I’m pretty sure his 5 rebounds per game average comes from the defensive end most of the time.
As for the Vertical/Horizontal leaping theory. I agree with you. I’ve never thought about it that way. It didn’t occur to me the some people arent comfortable finishing with their momentum headin twoard the basket. It explains a lot.
In that case marvin might want to employ a jump stop before finishng at the rim. Now i’m not talking about a complete jump stop….While he is attacking the rim let his momentum carry him further twoard the basket W/the jump stop and finish. It’s a very effective move and always throws defenders off for some reason.
This kid does it perfectly (36 second mark).
This would allow Marvin to keep his momentum going while elevating verically insted of horizontally.
By ray

Ken, you only move Marvin if you can get something better. Consider this: if Woodson stays, there goes our chances of maximizing anything Marvin has to offer or might develop into further. Key phrases: “an offense that runs” and “maximizing talents.” What I don’t understand from Woodson supporters is how we’re supposed to expect him to do things like this when he didn’t do them for 4 years straight….
But who gives a F* anymore. I’m ready to either be resigned to him being here or be looking to see who will replace him. Personnel moves don’t mean a thing until Sund makes a decision on who will be coaching this team.

For Another example of this (Jump Stop) just think back to the Poster KG created yesterday over Gasol. He drove, gatherd himself with a jump stop and flused it down Gasol’s throaght bwahahaha…..
It happens at the 27 second mark
If marvin can learn to utilize this move insted of fubling his way deep into troube he could be more of an asset than a liability next season.

The thing thats so frustrating with Marvin is that it looks like his game hasn’t really improved much since his rookie year. Yea his numbers are up but his game looks the same. I really hope that this summer he takes a cue from Josh Smith and works with some legend like Hakim or just bust his a* period this summer trying to improve his game. He needs to be hitting the weights and working on his handles all summer long. I think if he had better handles his game would improve dramatically. His drives are so bad because most times he is loosing the ball or dribbling it off his foot. Adding the 3 pointer would also help. ALL summer it should be dribbling, putting up as many 3 point attempts as he can, and lifting weights.

CP, that’s the very crux of the Marvin and Josh argument. May I be struck down for bringing that one back up. You know what amuses me? The Pro-Marvin camp is right: Marvin is more coachable (if you call less assertive more coachable). He is supposed to be smarter (but doesn’t make plays nearly as often). He’s got a much better jumper than Josh. But…THE NUMBERS DON’T LIE. And neither do scouts around the league. Read what is said currently about each player on DraftExpress. Witness who showed up in the playoffs. And still what do you hear from people?
“Give Marvin another year. He’s going to be an all-star.”
“Josh hasn’t gotten better yet? It’s been 4 freakin’ years! He should be better than this by now, but he sucks and he’s dumb!”
Heh…

Guys
Can we please, Let’s Chill. What’s the rush on coaching situation. There probably wont be any major announcement before the Finals are over. They have center stage right now.
Let the guys take a break and do a little fishing, spend time with the family: my God can we get-a-life?
You notice that none of the Real franchises have made any announcements so do yall think the broke as$ Spirit will make a move. If we do move Woody, it will be for whoever is left over after: CHICAGO, PHX, AND DETROIT have made their move. We get sloppy 4ths.
On Marvin: I’ve been saying every since the news came out back in the Summer that he was drafted that he was rated WWWWAAAAYYYY too high. He should have been picked at least the lower 3rd of the lottery. He is what he is. His Hoops IQ is a step slow and his feet are too dam_ big.
All that being said. We got a good core group but as my boy Ando has been saying: Somebody has got to go. I say move Marvin, Salim and even Za Za. Solo really impressed me during the playoffs. I think it’s time to get him some serious minutes. Maybe even start him. I think we need to resign Bibby if at all possible. I love Acie but he’s no Bibby yet.
JJ, Al and Josh should be untouchables. They are the heart and SOUL of this team POOH. What ever Josh lacks in decisionmaking ability, he make up for it in Heart, freekish athletic ability (which translates into butts in the seats), defense and the desire to win.
Yall, think about this senerio. The Celtics win in six. That means we ended the season the second best team in the NBA. How do you fire your coach after that?
I’m excited and Heck about next year. I would be even more excited if we just Ride the Playoff Wave we formed next year.
Gotta go. Them bass are calling.
Keep Woody!!

Everyone keeps saying someone has to goand you are right. Someone does have to go, but the person who wants to go is going to leave and not even ask the hawks for offer. And that is Salim Stoudamire one of the better athletes and and the best shooter on the hawks. Why he doesn’t play is because he is lost in Woody’s bench,
The only way he stays is if a new coach comes in and says you will be a big part of this offense.
and you should want him stay

Heard on the radio yesterday that Thibodeau is getting a hard look from Sund. Can’t do anything until the Finals are over with him. The guy draws up good defenses but is he head coach material?
I don’t remember anybody talking about what a good coach Woodson was during the regular season. How do three wins in the playoffs turn him into a good coach?
People that are dogging Flip I have to ask one question - do you think Woody guides us to series victories over Orlando & Cleveland if our playoff seedings were magically reversed? He couldn’t even coach us to a single digit LOSS at Boston.
While I think Woody has been dealt a less than optimal roster, he truly has shown no signs of stepping up his game. If he is unable to change/improve how do you expect him to make those improvments in his players?
Just asking.

RAY-we understand each other when it comes to Marvin. There’s also another player Woodson and his staff should work on, and that’s JSmoove. He obviously has small hands for his size, like M oses Malone. All of his shots are directed to the front of the rim, and that leaves him with little margin for error. He needs to be introduced to that square on the backboard just above the basket. TDuncan has made a living using it while compensating for being an awful outside shooter. He should learn to pull up when he is within a few feet of the basket and his path is blocked and concentrate on putting the ball inside that square. It will cut down on his charges, his overall turnovers, and increase his scoring and shooting % without taking any additional shots.
SALIM FAN-if you can remember back to the days of the HIGHLIGHT FILM, you will recall that Dominique was not a good finisher on fastbreaks when he was dribbling the ball. If he had the ball he would sort of drag his foot and pump the ball with 2 hands behind his head, like a 2handed dunk, and lay the ball in. He was the most powerful 2 handed dunker in the NBA in his prime, but you seldom saw him finish a one handed dunk, especially if he was dribbling the ball to the basket.
In High School, I couldn’t dunk with one hand, but I could do it easily with 2. That’s because I was always trying to imitate the way I saw others gliding in, in full stride, and dunking. I just couldn’t get any elevation that way. It wasn’t until college that someone told me what my problem was and what I was doing wrong. Someone needs to do the same for Marvin.
To do what I was doing at 6’1”, I thought I was tough S—t. Then reality set in. I tried to go up against a rather skinny player from Chipley, FL called the ATRAIN, Artis Gilmore. I quickly found out he had some vertical leaping ability too, and a 7’1” frame to go with it. After getting out of the military I went back to college and made the team. In my 2nd gm I really met my match when I got creamed by 2 former Tenn State teammates, former NBA Allstars LNeal, the Trailblazers former ROY, and the Suns and Hawks former player “TRUCK” Robinson. Gilmore was rather thin when I went up against him, but Neal and Robinson were physical beasts, and had some serious skills to go with that size. They beat me like I’d stolen something and didn’t break a sweat in the process. In fact, that was the last college gm I ever played because I quit the team after that gm, but for a completely different reason.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am encouraged each day we get closer to the end of Woodson’s contract without an extension. I can only hope.

Realsquak, I completly agree. If sund doesn’t say anything to him, he’s not going to come back. Obviously he is one of the best shooters on the team.

Hey, man I like Salim, and think he’s a very good shooter. But if he ever averages 30 min. a game the guy he’s guarding will likely get more than 18, effectively negating his positive impact. Dude has a big heart, but he just can’t stay in front of many (if not most) of the folks he’d be asked to guard at 30 min. a game.
I do think he could be an effective “microwave” off the bench for about 15 min. for the right team with an uptempo offense.
I’ll hate to see him go without seeing that possibility fulfilled here. Another wasted draft pick.

I’ve been meaning to weight in on Marvin’s issues with driving to the basket for awhile now, but forgot. A friend of mine reminded me of the difference between guys that jump off two feet and guys that can jump well off one foot. Marvin’s definitely a two feet jumper, which keeps him from taking a long first step or last two steps to finish at the basket. Chills is a great example of a guy who can do both, but is very effective as a one foot jumper. He’s very fluid with his moves to the basket and jumps around people to finish his layups. Marvin looks awkward and doesn’t jump around people well. I still think Marvin’s body hasn’t fully matured and that is a cause of him losing the ball a lot and falling down on drives to the basket. I think next year will be a really good indicator of where he can go with his game.
I’m still in the camp that the HAWKS are going to have to trade Chills because they won’t be able to afford him. (Not because he’s not worth it) If they sign JS to around 10 mil/per they probably can sign only one more quality player and that could be Dave Anderson. Even though the concensus is he’s soft and a poor defender, they say he can shoot. If he can score, then he can start and move Marvin to the bench. Then when Marvin comes off the bench, he can be the primary scorer, which may force him to improve his game. I think this is a realistic plan, knowing that the ASG is cheap. Chills is a great asset and deserves a good contract, I just don’t think that the HAWKS can offer it. I hate to say this, but in my mind a lot of next year rides on Speedy. If he can play they have three point guards (if they keep Bibby) and they can bring Acie along slowly. If he can’t play, they need to find away to get his salary off the cap and us it to possibly sign Chills or a quality FA.
Ken Strickland great post on Marvin, I think I’m saying the same thing but in a slight different way.

I would’nt mind see’n Salim here for a few more years, but i think he is gone sumtime this summer.
Woodcock is a confidence killer period point blank, How is it that salim’s best year was rookie year and every year he got worse???……..
I really hope he goes sumwhere and get’s ample playing time…… I think he can be a 13pt 3 assist type guy with about 20 minutes a game.
There were times this year when his defense was suspect, but the last 10-15 games of the season he did a good job containing his man.
Sheldon Williams- brick hands /14 inch vertical…..Come on -this is even worse than the 05 draft. I was right all along,I said that Shellz,Reddick and Morrison would all flop or be role players at best…..
Candace-How the hell did shell head get that…. his tounge must be about a foot long

Been blasting about SECRETARIAT and BIG BROWN on FURMAN BISHER’S BLOG, and going heavy posting with down home info on the RICHMOND-BRAVES on CHOP CHICK’S and DAVID O’BRIEN’S sites. Even posted up on BA’s new site, but incognito.
Been getting the thesis published before I go get cut on some more.
Went to a WASHINGTON NATIONALS game memorial weekend. First major league game I’ve ever attended. Nice. Very nice.
Watching CHARLIE MORTON here in RICHMOND and two grandson’s AAU and RBI games. Enjoying life MANNY T.
Since SUND came around things have quieted down. And WOODSON appears to be a fixture for awhile so I’m just being cool with the posting here waiting for the signing deadlines and the draft. As in, what draft re: the HAWKS.
Nothing big with the WIZARDS. Haven’t read a REDSKINS blog in at least a month, but we need SPRINGS for two more years. Don’t like to hear that noise. But I see the owners have rejected the last two years of the current salary cap thing. I feel SNYDER’s got a hand in that somewhere. He doesn’t like restraints standing in the way of his money allowing him to do as he pleases. Well, maybe I’m selling the man short-then again….

KEN, very good point about ‘NIQUE and how it reflects MARVIN’s struggles!! yeah, ‘NIQUE didn’t make me as nervous as MW when i see/saw them put the ball down in traffic!!! but they are no doubt related in that regard!!!

I don’t remember seeing Nique trip over himself & fall down every other time he took the ball to the basket. What does that have to do with jumping? I seriously don’t think Marvin could dribble the ball full speed down the court without losing his handle or tripping over himself - unguarded. If someone is guarding him or he needs to make a move - forget it.
You can almost make the case that ZaZa does a better job bringing the ball up court & finishing on the break than Marvin!!

Trust me fellows, Marvins issues are no joke, especially if he’s unaware of them. I was able to compensate for the restrictions of being 6’1” and a vertical leaper, because I had big hands and could easily palm and control the ball. Having hands big enough and strong enough to control the ball and keep it away from the defender in close is crucial. How successful do you think DR J, MJ, CHawkins, GMcGinnis, GGervin etc, would have been without having hands big enough and strong enough to control the ball the way they did?
Both Marvin and JSmith have small and rather weak hands, which makes it difficult to control the ball in tight and keep it away from defenders. I learned to do certain things to compensate and they should do the same. For instance:
(1)They should learn to cup the ball like I did. It allows you to maintain one handed ball control, and maneuver while maintaining proper balance. You can also change hands and/or pass with ease. It’s so much harder to maintain proper balance, ball control and maneuverability if you’re trying to finish and maintain control of the ball in tight with both hands.
(2)They should develop inside moves designed to get them within 5-6ft of the basket, and at proper angles for bank shots and jump hooks, instead of right at the rim. Marvin actually developed a nice running hook accross the lane near the end of the season, if you’ll remember.
(3)Tim Duncan has been an inside force in the NBA for yrs, and he isn’t known for being a strong dunker. Hewever, he is known for being a strong inside scorer because he uses his skills to get within 5-6ft of the basket and creates angles for his deadly bank shots and jump hooks. He forces teams to double him and passes out for open jumpers. Both Josh and Marvin should be made to think like that.
Woodson, or whoever is the Hawks HC, should understand you can’t establish an inside OFF when your BIGS are constantly standing out on the floor. As a HC, instead of criticizing and punishing players for being unable to do certain things certain ways, like Woodson tends to do, you find out why they’re having difficulties. Then you seek solutions to the problems and put them in situations that will help them succeed.
Marvin shouldn’t be asked to take his man off the dribble if it poses a problem for him, which it does. Yet, if he wants to involve himself in the OFF, that’s what he often has to do. Woodson has yet to see fit to modify his OFF to free one of the NBA’a most accurate midrange shooters. JSmith should not be put in a position of having to hoist 3pt shots with the shot clock expiring. He should be using his tremendous talents inside to force DEF to collapse on him, which would create open shots for shooters like Bibby, JJ, Marvin and Chills, yes Chills.
THE HAWKS DON’T NEED MORE TALENT TO BE A SUCCESSFUL WINNING TEAM, WE JUST NEED TO GET MORE OUT OF THE TALENT WE HAVE, AND WOODSON HASN’T SHOWN HE CAN DO THAT.
By SalimFan

Oh but he will next year. The first 4 years were just an aberration. Fifth year is the charm for coaches. Or is that first-time head coaches? Oh I don’t know, but we’ll all see that Woody is actually a very good head coach. The problem lies only with the players. They’re stupid and don’t listen to anything he says, which is why we’ve been losing all these years. Young players should know how to teach and develop themselves, regardless of their age or background. Woodson is special and is being unfairly martyred. You’ll see.

Ken,
Maybe Smoove has small hands (I honestly haven’t noticed that, though), but what on earth are you talking about with Marvin’s hands?? Marvin has problems with his handles, but his hands are freaking huge. That’s one of the things that made people think he would make such a great prospect in ‘05 - his long arms and large hands were thought to be a formula for someone who would cause opposing forwards fits because they couldn’t rip the ball from him and because he would be able to slap the ball away on D. Google his old scouting report and you’ll find references to his large hands being a positive attribute. Besides, have you ever seen the dude shoot free throws? The reason he has such good control on those is because his hands cover so much of the damned ball.
Marvin’s main problem is what Najeh said - he’s too timid. It’s hard to get to the rim when you’re happy to stand out on the perimeter and prefer to pass it away rather than take it into the paint (it also doesn’t help when your coach calls for you to be a spot-up midrange shooter on every play). His secondary problem as a ballhandler is the same as Smoove’s main problem - he dribbles too high, which makes it hard to control. His hands are the least of his concerns. In fact, the fact that he has large hands makes it even more frustrating that he hasn’t shown better development with his handles.
I agree with the rest of what you said, though.
And now, back to my self-imposed exile (it’s done wonders for my health!).

I always wondered why the Bucks fired Terry Porter a year after he took his team to the playoffs and replaced him with Terry Stotts, of all people. Terry Porter might actually be a pretty good hire there. I still don’t think you can win a title when your two best players refuse to play defense, but they probably won’t fall off too far from where they are at right now.

Sautee, I agree. There’s always a negative to every players game, but then there is always a positive. I give woody credit for getting rid of salim’s arrogance and motivating him to become a better defender……but that’s about the ONLY thing i’ll give him ay credit for. EVER….
If given more PT it defenetly would have shown more. How can you expect a player to come in and beexpected to guard the top players in the leauge if he never has an oppourtunity to grow at it and get better at it? Practice (and the off-season) helps a lot, but he won’t get much better just sitting on the bench.

As far as Marvin is concerned, Yeah it just goes to show why a guy with a .300 win percentage dosn’t deserve to come back.

MATT-I also referenced having weak hands. You mentioned how Marvin only wants to hang outside and hoist jumpers. Well, if that’s true, how do you explain him going to the FT line as much, if not more, than any other Hawk in the playoffs and during the playoff run? I previously mentioned their need to improve their ballhandling skills. They would cut down on a lot of inside turnovers if they used their ballhandling skills and moves to get CLOSE TO THE BASKET instead of ALL THE WAY TO THE BASKET.
When all is said and done, none of us are really that far apart when evaluating the Hawks. We all agree that Marvin and Smoove need to work on certain aspects of their gms. We also realize that Horford is a beast that is only going to get better. Most importantly, we all realize Woodson, and his style of coaching, player utilization and preferred style of play, is not a good fit for this team and its talent.
We’re just using different approaches and verbage to express ahared sentiments about our beloved Hawks and their dysfunctional HC.

Most guys with large hands are great at catching. Jerry Rice made his mark cause his hands are huge. Marvin can’t catch a cold. And he as a jump shot when he’s not fading. But most of his shots he is fading to the side.

hey buddy,
ha ha, nerd, that is funny. what are you 9?
it is very funny to me that there is a small group of you who are on this thing like 20 out of the 24 hours in a day who like to mock others as nerds or basement dwellers or people who need to get a life.
i suggest you look up the word ‘irony’.
anyway, i harbor no illusions about my severe lack of game (that was many years ago for a crappy team), the point was to show the ridiculousness of your logic. you keep posting about how great salim would be if only he had a chance, and i will keep posting what a freakin fool you are. i am trying to add to the quality of this forum by keeping the topics on point and within the realm of reason. you are welcome.
fact is, salim was given a chance when he was drafted, and he doesn’t perform in games or practice (which most of you don’t realize actually counts towards determining a players abilities and playing time, and which you do not see or know what happens).
‘why don’t they develop him like stuckey?’ you silly people ask. well, if he played like stuckey, he would develop like him. when you get the opportunities you have to perform, and salim was a second round draft pick for a reason.
but, like you said, he could probably average 20 points a game. his team would end up winning ten on the year, be last in the league in defense, and he would shoot around 35%, but he could do it. as charles barkley used to say, everyone in the nba can score, that is the easy part.
silly man who makes silly statements about a player who will never be more than a ninth man on a bench.
but next year when he is averaging 7 points a game for golden state, you can complain about how he was so good in college so clearly he should be just as good in the nba if only given a chance.
fool.
cheers!

Detroit don’t want woodson (DDWW)! They are attempting to sucker us in keeping him just as they did Jon Koncak in the 80’s. Back then we had a young team that was torn apart because of a silly decision. Today, it would be silly to keep a coach that has issues with some players. Please Sund, do not repeat history.

In a press conference this morning, CIA director Michael Hayden again defended the administations’ view on torture.
“Torture is not slow pain”, Hayden stressed, “even if Hawks blogger MannyT thinks it is”.
“We will not allow basketball bloggers to define torture for us” Hayden added, “that’s for the Justice Department lawyers and the Vice President’s office to decide”.
There was no immediate comment from MannyT

1+2-Detroit did more than just inquire about Koncak back then. They signed him to a huge contract offer sheet and the Hawks matched it. Koncak had replaced KWillis, who was on IR and trying to force the Hawks into signing him to a new contract. Willis was being represented by his brother and had him missing rehab appointments and team meetings. Because they were unsure about KWillis and his status, they panicked and matched Detroits offer.
Koncak couldn’t measure up to the pressure of the huge contract and eventually folded under the pressure. Also, after replacing Willis at PF, both he and the Hawks had an outstanding end of the season run.
Overall, I understand you analogy, and can’t argue with your sentiments about Woodson.

Stevo
1) Your team in High School PROBABLY sucked b/c you were on it (Being a Ball Hog no doubt)
2) Let me lay some “salim logic” on you.
Rodney Stuckey’s Rookie season.
19 MPG, 7.6 PPG .814%FT%
Salim Stoudamire’s Rookie Season
20.3 MPG 9.7 PPG 90% FT%
More Stuckey .188% 3pt .401% FG
Stoudamire .38% 3pt .415% FG
Stuckey Edged Salim in rebounds 2.3 per to 1.9 per
Stuckey and Salim tied in the turnover department both Averaging 1.3 per game.
Stats don’t lie homie…Clearly if salim had devolped like stuckey he wouldn’t be as good not to mention a crappy 3pt shooter.
Now on to my next point. Joe Joohnson Averages 40.8 MPG this season with 21.7 PPG.
What happens when you double salim’s minutes as well as his stats(Rookie Season)???
40.6 MPG 19.4ppg Thats a little over the 18ppg I predicted and that puts Salim up there with names like Richard Hamilton and Ben Gordon….and that not too far from JJ (Scoring-wise).
No BS or Idiocy Stevo, just straight facts..
The Same goes for Acie Law who also averaged 18ppg in college. It will probably won’t Average that much sice he plays the role of facilitator but he’ll be close. (Not a pure scorer like salim)
It’s all about the minutes (for these two in particular b/c they have no trouble putting up the numbers).
3)As you can clearly see, stuckey IS Not Salim Soudamire might be more of a defensive presence but offensively….well the STATS don’t lie.
4) There is absolutely no need for me to look up such trivial words like Irony. Espically when I already comprehend it’s meaning.
But le me give you the definition of another word you like to use
Logic- The science that investigates the principles governing correct or reliable inference; reason or sound judgment, as in utterances or actions.
As i’ve shown you, my logic is based on the FACTS, and the projecion of what salim’s stats WOULD look like if his minutes were doubled. Nothing more.

Stevo, that post was rhetorical. And look at his NBA stats and COMPREHEND that his minutes directly effect his production.
Based on the commonality of your post(I’ve read statements like that before) I can see that you really don’t give a damn about it enough to LOOK IT UP anyway so stop wasting my time and go bother someone else.
….Some people just don’t know when to leave well enough alone. Looks like i’m the fool B/C I LOOKED UP THE STATS FOR YOU. Like I said a week ago, you wouldn’t be talking if you actually took the time to look at the history of he NBA production over the years.

Salim would be a lot more valuable if he was a bench player on a good team who could come in and focus entirely on scoring. Ideally it would be a good defensive team which could compensate for his not-so-consistent defense. A lot of players in the past, like Jannero Pargo on this year’s Hornets or Bobby Jackson on the Kings when they were good, have made a name for themselves in a similar role. On a team like the Hawks, where nobody’s role is really defined very well and there’s no go-to offensive player (which means ball movement and point guard play is even more important), it’s pretty much the worst situation for Salim to be in. I still think if he goes to a team like San Antonio and plays 15-20 minutes off the bench he will have a much more positive impact than he does here. Will he average 18 ppg like SalimFan is saying he will? I kinda doubt a coach on a good team would give him enough looks to where he can get that many, but he can be a valuable player in the right situation.
Damn, Ray, you got me… I was trying to keep the “Black or White” thing a secret!

I’m guessing someone will read my previous post and call me out for saying Joe Johnson is not a go-to offensive player… I meant someone like Kobe who will put the team on his back 8 times out of 10 and get the victory. As good as Joe is he’s a level below that.

I don’t think any of us have seen enough of Salim Stoudamire in this past season to consider him a good or bad defender
because really from what I have seen over the past year was a much improved defender who stayed in front of his man and stole balls from point guards in the open court

I guess we saw different games. I certainly didn’t see all 82, but when I watched Salim this year what I saw was yes, an improved defender, yes, some steals (although he’s always done that on defense), but staying in front… not so much. Improved yes, but actually staying in front… not so much.
That doesn’t mean that I don’t like him - I do.
But you have to think that if he’d improved staying in front in practice, that he’d GET more playing time, since Woody favors defense over everything else.

it hurts, it really hurts.
in stressing and emphasising logic, you then proceed to throw it completely out the window by talking about doubling stats by doubling minutes.
i cannot even begin on that. time after time you show where your mind is, and i finally accept that it is pointless for me to fight it.
you win. i will leave all the talk (and there is more than is healthy, really) of how great salim would be if only given the proper PT by his coach, alone.
i guess it is harmless, but it definitely hurts my head when i read it. so i guess i will just have to try to avoid it, as you suggested earlier.
