Finger pointing (and other stuff)
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
SMYRNA -The catalysts for the Hawks Game 3 turnaround Saturday night can’t stop pointing the finger at one another.
Josh Smith swears it’s Al Horford’s fault.
Al Horford insists that Josh Smith is to blame.
No one, it seems, can decide who deserves more of the credit for energizing the Hawks in a must-win situation that could come to define their season.
Horford provided the inspiration video (and his second double double of the series), while Smith provided the explosive opening quarter (27 points, nine rebounds and six assists when it was over) that set the tone for the evening.
What should be clear by now is that the Hawks are a totally different team when they both play the way they did Saturday.
“I really think it starts with Josh,” Horford said. “He’s such an impact player. He just makes great plays. And I think when he makes those types of plays it gets everybody fired up. So I really think it starts with him.”
Smith said seeing the usually reserved Horford talking smack and playing to the crowd is what makes it so fun for him. “That’s how I try to play every night,” he said. “So any time he wants to join me and get things fired up, it’s always a good thing.”
I’ve been yapping about this since last week, to anyone that will listen, but I felt like the only way the Hawks could stir things up was to play through these two guys. With the Celtics locked in on guarding both Joe Johnson and Mike Bibby, there has to be an opening to play through these two young monsters and see if there was any way to shake things up a bit and catch the Celtics off guard. It worked Saturday but imagine things will be noticeably tougher for these two Monday night.
A few notes, a quote or two and several other random observations from a wild and crazy weekend in Hawksville:
— According my counterparts in Boston, and one of my spies stationed in and around the visitor’s locker room, it appears that the Celtics had it out after the game regarding the focus necessary to finish off a team like the Hawks. “We didn’t help each other on offense and we didn’t help each other on defense,” Celtics All-Star guard Ray Allen said. “We still had plays, we made plays. But just the typical Celtic basketball that we played all year, we always helped each other on both ends of the floor. Tonight, we didn’t do a great job of it.”
Even Celtics coach Doc Rivers sounded a bit miffed at his team’s sudden impulse to finish off the Hawks man-to-man rather than as a group. “I told the guys after the game that I thought each guy wanted to win the game by themselves, which you can’t do,” he said. “I like the fact that they wanted to win the game. The only way you’re going to do that is as a team. Even in the end you saw Rajon [Rondo] try to back Mike Bibby down [and got a foul]. That’s not what we do, but that’s what they all did. Rajon tried to win the game for us. Ray wanted to win the game for us. Paul [Pierce] wanted to win the game for us. But we have to win it as a group and that’s how it always has to be.”
— A scout from an Eastern Conference playoff team at Saturday’s game reminded me of one thing that you should never forget. “Average guys tend to come back to reality on the road,” he said. “I don’t mean starters or your All-Stars or anything, but your role players and bench guys. They usually have big games at home and then even out on the road.” I immediately thought of Kendrick Perkins, who looked like a shell of the bruiser we saw in Boston after Horford gave him that ‘bow to the nose early in the game. I happen to love what Perkins does for the Celtics, but my scout friend was right, you can’t count on the same production on the road as you can when a guy like that is playing at home. “Listen, when the Hawks turn that pace up the way they did, Perkins and P.J. Brown can forget it,” he said. “They can’t run up and down that floor like that. It’s a good thing the Celtics have Big Baby and Leon Powe, too. They aren’t ideal for that type of game but they’re better equipped than those other two guys. The Celtics can’t afford to try and play small ball with the Hawks or chase them up and down the floor. KG doesn’t have the same hold on the game like that. Ray and Paul are fine in that style. But KG dominates this team in a half court game. He could get nasty numbers no matter how they play because he’s three inches taller than any other player in the series. But if the Celtics want to finish these boys off, they’ll slow it down.”
— Another beat writer covering the Detroit-Philly series called me minutes ago to make sure I knew that he had cast his Rookie of the Year ballot for Horford (fine choice but I think the big fella’s going to lose out to Kevin Durant in the end). He also wanted me to know that he’s officially ready to hand over the title of “Most Ridiculous Athlete in the League” to Josh Smith. It’s something we do in our free time (all 20 minutes of it), debating stuff like who’s the best this or that. Previously my boy was lobbying hard for Amare Stoudemire (pre and post microfracture surgery). But after finally seeing Josh Smith on TV and not in person (go figure) he’s convinced more than ever that Josh Smith is the guy. “I gotta give it up to young fella,” he said. “I thought he was going to lay that one in and he just kept going up and up and up. I thought he was going to hit his head on the square. That boy’s got the craziest hops in the league.” My pops did him one better last night. He said it looked like JS took off from Decatur on that dunk over Ray Allen. My personal fave was the tomahawk joint on the fast break where he caught the ball in stride, took two steps and was in Condor mode gliding towards the basket. Forgive me John Wooden, but I’m a proponent of the slam dunk in basketball.
— “We were on top of our game. When we play like that I think we’re one of the best teams in the league. We just have to learn how to be more consistent and play like that every night.” - Hawks captain and All-Star Joe Johnson with the craziest line of the day [Sunday] after practice when asked if the Hawks’ success in Game 3 had anything to do with the Celtics feeling too good about their 2-0 lead in the series.

Just saw ROY Horford on TNT, and he isn’t apologizing to anyone for telling Pierce what was up. That is what being a two time champion gives you. You will not be intimidated by the big moment or series. Go Git ‘Em Birds

Thats the way to win, hit them in the mouth. The Hawks showed the fire tonight that they need to show every game. I just hope JS doesn’t start hoisting up three’s next game. He can hit that shot when he is open but he needs to understand that he is not Ray Allen. Great game by everyone on the team.

It was great to see some swagger in Philips Arena. Hopefully, there is something left for Monday. It should be a fantastic game.
I agree that Horford deserves ROY, but the marketing machine will favor Durant. We should get a bit more national TV next season. Those games give the Hawks a chance to shine on the national stage.

Yup Horford is inthe NBA for a reason. The Celts need to stop cryin about AL hurting their feelings, and just play ball. KG and Paul Pierice are two of the biggest trash talkers in the game.
I hope we run them into the ground tomorrow.

I’m glad that everyone on the team is passing the blame around. As long as we pass the ball like that then hopefully we can pull out another win at home.

I honestly lost my voice out there in 303!!! haha! I don’t think the two Boston Fair Weather Fans who were in front of me will be there next game!

Now I’m not trying to get ahead of the game but game 6 (home game 3) went on sale the same time as games 3 and 4. If you are waiting for a Hawks win (and I don’t blame you if you do) then you can get them over the internet tomorrow night. If not then at the Philips Box Office or Ticketmaster outlets Tuesday morning. And if they do win Monday night everybody better get out and sell out Friday (game 6).

I will give credit where credit is due. I will have to say good game by Woodson, and I wish he make adjustment like this more often. If he willing to make adjustments and really coach, I say the Hawks shound sign him for a two more years.
Hey, we could and have been worse off before the BK era. At least BK can find talent. Let us look at some of the talent BK has mined over the years: Pau Gasol Boris Diaw Josh Smith Josh Childress Al Horford Acie Law Royal Ivey Mario West Marvin Williams
The short list just shows that BK can find some talents. He has had more hits in 3-4 years, then the hawks have had in the previous 10 years before the BK era,. Again, folks, it could be worse. But in this case, we can see growth.
Finally, Josh Smith will be an all-star next year. The game against Boston put him over the top for voting next year.
I have a way to get Zaza better. I want to send him to one of those training places. We will make Zaza faster and stronger. Then I will have him working on some low post moves.

manny t, cant say it is going to end tomorrow night and it is cool how they put that thought to rest. man, i was working hard in section 113 to make it happen. it was wild last night, sooo much fun. it reminds me of some of the games i saw particularly a game with boston in the spring of 1980 with tree, roundfield and the gang as they pulled out a win. man, i was looking up to 303 wondering how you and volman were doing. didnt see the post about the mad ants hat until i got home. listen i might have on my horhitas tequilla hat with the green leaf on it for tomorrows night game, both my girls wanted to know why i was wearing a hat with a marijuana leaf on it. if you are down in the 113/114 section at half time check us out as we will be cowering somewhere near the pretzel stand, also will hope to make it early enough to enjoy a piece of pizza just outside the gate in the cnn food court.

Volman It was a great time on Saturday. Lot’s of fun in 303. I predict much less green in the Highlight Factory on Monday. I agree that I enjoyed watching the team play that aggressive, active style that Woody promised in October.
mykhalc The magic question for Monday is how do we respond after the Celtics get 48 hours to adjust their game plan. If we can continue to do what we do, the rest of these games will be fan-tastic regardless of the outcome.
…all that said…paul revere you should be grateful that a GaTech man is the captain of the BoSox. Save that off with their heads stuff for the Queen and the Highlander fans. Today’s News
It could end in two games or it could go further. I feel that the Celtics carry a torch of destiny, but at the same time, there’s nothing like stubbing the toe of a juggernaut. Better yet, kick ‘em in the shin. One way or another, win or lose, the Hawks have to play as hard, as proud, and as tenaciously as they did in game 3. That is all I require.
Quote of the game in game 3, courtesy of former Hawk and current Hawks commentator Steve Smith: “When Zaza headbutts you (knocks heads with someone), the advantage is…Zaza.” I couldn’t stop laughing with that one…
Al Horford is a winner in every sense of the word. He inspires his teammates. You can tell that he’s a great influence on Josh Smith, who although in the league for a few years already, is basically the same age. Horford is able to bring the intensity that Josh Smith lives on, and adds the substance and fundamentals to it. Josh needs that. He isn’t getting it from anyone else. There are no veteran forwards on this team (nor have there been) who could provide the leadership and example through both words and actions. And so, these two guys have to feed off of each other. It’s obvious that both guys have good court awareness on both ends of the court. What a wonderful relationship they can continue to develop in the frontcourt over time.
Woodson’s clues give me the blues. You know, I should start a top ten list of clues that your head coach is not connected to your team. Here’s one:
“It’s already a physical series. Bodies are going everywhere, so I’m not telling my guys not to do it,” Hawks coach Mike Woodson said after his team’s practice Sunday at Philips Arena. “I guess it’s their thing. As long as they play hard and do what they’re supposed to do on the floor, I guess I’m OK with it. I’m not trying to add fuel to the fire, but I want our guys to relax, have fun and play.”
Dude, relaxing is not how we win. Never has been. Intensity, intensity, intensity. Relax?? Are you freakin’ kidding me? Listen to those vague comments about his team’s intensity, emotion, and trash talking. I thought this dude had been to the playoffs? Talk about disconnected…was there ever a coach more mis-matched with his team?
I’m with anybody who wants Rudy Tomjanovich here. But can it even be done? I’m not sure this would work with Billy around…
Jalen Rose should kick off in Stephen A. Smith’s a$$. In fact, I’d call that Community Service. If Jalen ever commits a misdemeanor crime or something like that, and receives a light sentence, that’s my recommendation. I know, I know. I shouldn’t be promoting violence, right? Ehhh…I’ve learned in my time that the proper application of a size 12 appendage to the middle posterior region of the offending party solves a LOT of problems, though…
I’m looking forward to a Monday night fight. And for once, it’s not UFC or Pride. How about that? Well, my poor pitbull hasn’t recovered from my game 3 antics. Something tells me that at the first sound of a ref’s whistle from the tv, he’ll be headed downstairs (and away from my yelling, screaming, whooping, cat-calling, cursing self). Meanwhile, my wife continues to be amused by my antics and waits for the inevitable phone call from the infamous HB Ando, whom she likes to talk a little harmless trash with before handing the phone over…and listen to us chatter about basketball, like two school girls with new cell phones. Ahhh…the game always reduces grown men to boyhood…
And I’m out…

The Celtics are going to come out Monday and try to hit us in the mouth early. We have to respond and not look like we did in the first two games when they did. If we push the ball at any opportunity and play with the passion I saw in game 3 we might be able to pull this one out.

Alright so the game was AMAZING!!! and i really don’t think that it was a fluke. We have seen the Hawks play like this earlier in the year and if they keep up the intensity we are pushing this 6 or 7 games and we won’t be the ones going fishing
But yeah if you weren’t their saturday you better be their monday cause the game was hype for all forty eight minutes and the times in between
afewnotes
Al Horford Beast if anything everyone should be saying we fugged on the ROY voting if he doesn’t win. I mean really he is playing with no fear, in control, and fire against one of the most intimidating players in KEvin Garnett!! And putting the moves on people. I am so glad he is here cause before if we were getting pushed around you had to depend on Shelden and he was nice, but he couldn’t turn it around and rub it in your face like Al. Man that is so fire!!!
Josh Smith played well Hype simply put aside from a few erratic passes and only one shot i saw he played like there was no way he was going to let the celtics beat the hawks on their home court.
Oh and on more Marvin’s role diminishes, but he played with so much more intensity at one point he checked into the game and i said oh no not marvin, but he came out and was active on defense and hitting the boards DID YOU SEE THE PUT BACK??? BETTER QUESTION, DID YOU SEE WHERE CAME FROM???.
and i look for the games to get a lot more testy as we go down the stretch especially after we win monday. if we are on their heels in boston i am looking for ejections and i don’t think the hawks player are going to loose their cool before the celtics do

Of course Kendrick Perkins came back to earth. He’s garbage! He tries to be a tough guy but he was a big b*tch after he got hit in the face. It’s easy to knock Childress down and Zaza down (no offense to Chills), but #15 is a different story.
I love the way Horford won’t back down from any of these guys. He even let KG hear it after a couple of hard fouls. These Hawks used to get punked night-in and night-out but they seem to have more fire now.

Oh yea, I would not have believed Phillips could get that rowdy if I had not seen it in person. Good job Hawks fans.
I hope we get a similar effort tonight because the longer the series goes, the better for the Hawks. Even if they lose, the more games, the more exposure/revenue and the more national attention will carry over for next year.

Everyone can say what they would like to say about this next statement, but I’m so glad that the Hawks didn’t end u p with pick #1 or 2 last season. I’m REALLY looking forward to screaming my fool head off tonight at Philips Arena. I plan on leaving with no voice.
Only way Hawks walk away with a win tonight is if they bow-up and take a few swings. And I don’t mean Zaza shoving Eddie House. I mean, taking on one of the Celtics big guys. I just can’t envision the Celtics allowing another jam-fest tonight. Someone will be under-cut and the Hawks will need someone to step up and go “Terry Funk” on the green dudes. This is when we need the prankster back… Lo Wright. He would either deliver an old fashioned heart punch (you young guys don’t know anything about that) or pour popcorn down KG’s shorts. Can we sign Dirty Dick Slater for tonight’s game? How about Batista (either one)?

Unfortunately, it makes you sound like Dick Cheney, saying that to criticize the government is to give comfort to the enemy.
You have had some good points in your posts of the past, but don’t lose your credibility with specious, one-sided comments. And when BETTER to discuss the shortcomings of a franchise than the offseason?
I’ll guarantee you that no one on this blog loves the Hawks any more than many of the loudest critics. If they/we didn’t care so much, we wouldn’t even post.

Astro Joe Isn’t Terry Funk about 100 years old? Ric Flair may only be 80. He was great at talking smack. How wild would it be if NBA post game interviews were like those from the testosterone soap operas aka Pro Wrasslin!
After yesterday’s NBA games, Kidd would still be remorseful for neck tossing Pargo, but Dampier or whomever their heel would be could come on and show no remorse…explaining that in a man’s playoff game, lane ryhmes with pain…and I AM the sheriff of pain in these parts.
Then every team would need a goon/heel just for the interviews. As I write this, it seems like the perfect angle for the NHL to gain a few ratings points.
If your team doesn’t have a heel, it would be up to the manager to be the devious cut up. I could not stay in my seat if Mr. Quiet, BK, suddenly became the prankster—listening in on Doc’s huddle; sending Harry the Hawk into the opponents dressing room to spy.
I know it’s silly, but it would make me laugh.

Ando I will definitely come down to the Jack Daniels area at halftime. The pre-game pizza depends on how early the neighbor and I get down to the arena.
Mad Ants cap is the key to me b/c lot’s of folks have Hawks gear.
ray Woody wants them to stay loose, but be rough and ready. We’ll have to dial up some of the pro wrasslin’ community to do the pre-game speech this evening.
Goldberg, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Sting?
Hey…one of the Steiner brothers is local. I remember reading that in the AJC.
I won’t take up a bunch more space to get the speech out here, but I know it starts with brother and it ends with a loud wooo!

MannyT, Atlanta is the home of many former wrestlers. I prefer the old school guys. They didn’t have steroids, just a case of beer and some Goody’s. Funk, Slater, the Andersons and crew were tough as nails. One of my favorite ever, Abdullah the Butcher, owns a restaurant in SW Atlanta. Ribs and Chinese Food joint. Weird combination, but it works. But you have to be able to eat the ribs while staring at a picture of Abdullah “with a crimson mask”. We need Sekou to shuffle his legs ala Rocky Johnson and put Bob Ryan in a sleeper hold.
Because in order to be the man, you have to beat the man… WOOOO!

SEKOU, why is it ok for PAUL PIERCE TO FLASH GANG “BLOOD KILLER ” SIGNS DURING A LIVE NBA TELECAST. Why hasnt the media or David Stern said or done ANYTHING about this. Pierce seems an all to willing player in the GANG trash game that is taking young people off our streets EVERY DAY. Yet nobody from the NBA LEAGUE OFFICE or MEDIA SAYS A WORD ABOUT IT.

Manny T, you must have definitely seen me.. I was standing up/going crazy all night. I had my Smoove jersey on, and would not let up on those two Celtics fans in front of me…Great stuff!
Ando, I’ll try to make it for some pretzels at halftime (haha).. Also, I think I might have seen you guys congregating outside of the Philips entrance in the CNN Center.. I’ll try to find you guys out there tonight.. I’ll have on my Smoove Jersey and some Red YO MTV Raps Pumbas!
Sautee, I definitely see where you’re coming from. I just hate to see this blog go from happy for the Hawks being in the playoffs, to some bloggers wanting to trade Joe, Smoove, fire woody, fire BK… The people who come on here and “tell it like it is”. It’s been VERY EASY to think negatively about the Hawks in the past 10 years. It really has. All I am trying to get across is that I want to see some positive posts on here (there usually are) WIN or LOSE. We should all be proud of what that team did on Saturday night. And if you weren’t there to witness that,
THEN SHAME ON YOU.
Go Hawks!

FRANK I saw what Pierce did but couldn’t make out what sign it was. The league or someone should let him know that kind of thing has no place in the Association or anywhere else. To me, that’s a threat and I seriously doube if he’ll try to back it up. But stuff like that is how people can get hurt.

volman, the blog will be interesting this summer. i just hope we can find enough to talk about with no picks and an open ended time frame to sign these guys and come up with a coach/gm situation. at least the hawks extended our expression another two days a least.

if the shots go down or there are some sweet floaters put up by bibby that horford and josh slam down it could be real cool. tell me that one of the celts wont want to intercept one of those guys with an assassin hold or do an assassin one and two tag team on us as they fly through the air commish or no commish. we are talking playoff bball man.

Winning a playoff game doesn’t entitle Woodson to return as coach next year. Hawks are winning despite Woody’s lack of coaching. They are doing this purely on talent. If they get a decent coach next year who can push this team, they will be one of the top 5 teams in the east. Hawks need to keep running against these older Celtics. That is the only way they can beat them. Horford is a beast. He is a rebounding machine out there.

Kudos to SalimFan for putting up that link to the scouting report of tonight’s game. The article was spot on.
In fact, the article summed up Al Horford’s effect on the game (and his teammates, most notably Josh Smith) better than I did. I was happy to see that an actual scout saw what I saw in game 3: Horford’s natural leading ability, better-than-anybody-thought talent, and his undeniable influence on Josh Smith (who has been needing this and not getting it).
It also summed up Josh Smith rather well: a “supreme X factor” who is still learning the game. Notice how people are no longer talking about him as some super-athletic dude who’s just not smart enough to go anywhere with his game. You’d think his six dimes would attest to that (I know, I know, just one game…but he’s been passing the ball like that). Once more, it’s proven that Josh just needs the steadying, focused influence. And the scout was right: when he’s slashing to the basket, he also begins hitting some jumpers. At that point, you really can’t stop him. Wait till he starts spending some serious time developing that jumper…
Anyway, let’s see some more of that intense action tonight!!

Thanks,
Also I noticed while watching the game that the ESPN anlyist Doris Burk was way more accurate on her assesment of out team than Mike Fratello was on TNT….Or maybe I just loved the fact that she kept giving smoove and Al Horford complements the whole night, not to mention her shameless promotion of the great fans at phillips arena lol.
Either way it will be a tough game tonight. It all starts with Bibby. He sets the tone. If he;s unselfish and gets everyone else involved then the rest of the team will do the same. BUT if he becomes a ball stopper then the Hawks will be in trouble. Hopefully his defense will be just as good on Rondo tonight.
Now Larry Brown always used the matchup zone with the pistons so why in the hell has Woodson not used it up until saturday???

What a way to end the half for the Hawks! Woody put in Solomon Jones and Solomon responded like WHOA!
I still am fearing that almost inevitable second half collapse, but if the Hawks somehow hold onto this, it’s a sign that maybe - just maybe - Woodson is starting to “get it” about using his bench. And if he is starting to get it, he’s doing it when it counts most.
As I said though, I have a hard time believing that a Woodson-led team will be able to counter the inevitable adjustments that the Celtics will make after halftime. The next 24 minutes will decide whether Mike Woodson’s job is secure.

That was an UNBELIEVEBLE WIN!!! I thought the crowd could help them win the game on Sat, but this game I just couldn’t imagine. JJ was UNGUARDABLE in the 4th quarter!!!!
Powe needs to go to DICK’S and purchase some NEW ANKLES!!! I haven’t seen that happen since Randolph Childress broke some ankles in the NCAA’s.
The quick 5 points to start the 4th took the heart of the Celtics and then JJ just took over. I couldn’t believe the Celtics weren’t double-teaming him quicker, but it shows that pressure can get to the best of players.

My thoughts exactly, Tiger Woo. All the clowns who say we should trade JJ and that he’s the kind of player who can’t take over games…well just look at tonight. One missed free throw aside, he was scoring at will during the closing minutes of the game. 35 points and 6 assists in the biggest game of his life.
JJ is a big-game player. And Josh Smith is now showing that he is too (again, putting aside that one ill-advised trey with Garnett in his face that he airballed…like JJ, he’s entitled to one screw-up).
Personally, I think the Hawks should get at least one more win in order for Woodson to have earned his extension. But I’ve got nothing but love for him tonight. EVERY Hawk played with heart tonight - even the guys who usually get slammed for seemingly lacking that killer instinct. Marvin either attacked the basket or nailed the open jumper every time he got the ball in the third quarter, and Zaza stepped up to the Big Ticket in the second quarter.
When the Hawks play with this much soul, they deserve to be on the court with any team in the league. Great win.

Josh Smith was an absolute terror, despite his 6 missed 3-point attempts. He still shot 50% from the floor and hit 12 of 13 free throws. And every last one of those 7 blocked shots was highlight reel-worthy.
Horford didn’t explode offensively like last time, but I have a feeling Boston read that scouting report. They did NOT want to get him going. He was still tough as ever and beat the crap out of ‘em on the glass.
JJ was straight up superstar. Straight up. Wow, talk about clutch. Even better? Bibby got going early, but was the guy setting some of those screens for JJ late in the game. Excellent work out there.
Solo demonstrated that he is worth having come off the bench. Goes right in and blocks a shot. Good move, Woody.
I won’t even criticize anybody’s performance tonight. Can’t. Just feels too good to see our guys go out and snatch that win, even after we got down by several points. It was just incredible. The crowd was incredible. Thanks to all the fans who showed up, it was straight rockin’, and I swear I could feel it down here in the SAV.
Hey Paul Pierce, still think JJ’s not an all-star?

I wish owners who never played the sport just let the GM do his job. One person said that JJ was not worth the money. I bet you the Cs wish they could get him back. I bet any team in the NBA wish they were as smart as BK about JJ.
Y’all did not believe me about the Z-man. Yep, my man has heart. I wanted to bulk him up and see if I can make him a .10 - .20 of a second faster. I will strap something on hsi waist and make him run all summer. Believe it or not, Zaza holds the cards of how much better this team could get. If Zaza improves 50%, the hawks couuld becaome one of the better team in the NBA.

Terrell, I didn’t know that either, but now I LOVE THE DUDE!

He ain’t got enough height or muscle, but ZaZaP might have just become the Kevin Willis this team needs!
How bout that big time BLOCK by seldom used Solomon Jones to end 1st Half? Get him more minutes!
Will NBA suspend Marvin and Perkins? I would hate to see that. Neither player strayed far enough from bench to pose a threat or participate in nonsense,but I do believe their toes touched the floor. Have some common sense and consider it a non issue, NBA!

Josh Smith makes me proud to be from down here. Finally, a franchise player with some class in Atlanta. Anybody see them trying to chest-bump Joe? The man hardly knows how to do one! These kids are a class act. You know what you get when you combine class with the hunger to play hard and compete? You get John Smoltz. You get Warrick Dunn. The Hawks are clearly on the right path.

Yall still want Deng over Chills? BK got it right in 04 and 08. Give him his props! Childress is all over the place. PG, SG, SF, and PF! If anyone has to go, I think it’s Marvin, but I hope we can keep them all. But that unrealistic. But anyway, GREAT WIN! And think about all the GM’s who feel FOOLISH for passing on Smoove. LAWD HAVE MERCY! If Billy had only drafted that Paul guy in 05, he’d be a GOD around here! But thats in the past. Lets look toward the future, and the future looks bright. First of all, congratulations to our team. We cannot commend them enough. As Smitty said, the Hawks are growing up right before our eyes.
Regardless of what Doc Rivers says, this has set the cat among the pigeons. We are in the Celtics’ heads right now. Anything is possible. We will be in real hostile territory when we go to Boston but if we can hang with them through the 3rd quarter and then let it loose in the 4th quarter.
My concern is however, Joe cannot do that every night. We are far too static in the half court game. We stand aroung like spectators (and not even cheering) and there is absolutely no movement. If we play like that in Boston we will not be competitive.
My other concern…what does this mean for Woody and his contract? I love when we win but does it mean Woody gets an extension? If that is so then it will be real sad.
Finally let’s hear it for the real 6th Man!!!! The Hawks Fans!!! They were absolutely great tonight.
It’s good to dream but wouldn’t it be nice to leave those Boston fans green with envy? (pun intended)
Let’s focus as fans and hope positive thoughts can will us a win in Boston.

Ya’ll lay off of Marvin, he made SOME plays tonight. He’s a twenty-two year old in the NBA playoffs. Just because three of his teammates are playing out of their minds at the same age (Smith,Childress,Horford)doesn’t mean he’s worthless. But going back to Boston, I REALLY wish Woodson would start Childress. Hard to believe we made it to the playoffs and teams are STILL forgetting about him in the post.

I’m also a little concerned this might lead to Woody getting an extension, but in fairness he has done a MUCH better job in this series than he did during the season. The team defense throughout this series, even in the two losses has been simply outstanding. The offense has picked up a lot these last two games, even though it kinda reverted back to regular season form in today’s 3rd quarter. Overall I’d say he’s done a pretty good job… particularly his substitution patterns have gotten better, since he seems to be willing to yank Marvin earlier and give Solo and Acie a few minutes.
But the real test is gonna be whether they can maintain the same level of energy and focus in a road game. That is still a big question mark especially for a young team like this one. If Woody wants to get paid he needs to have this team playing this well in Boston too.

Incredible Game! (cough, cough) It was a pleasure to meet MannyT, Jhan, Volman, Son of Doc, Doc and the Alpha Ando. Was it the unnatural power of a hand-shake and cordial discussion between Ando and myself that propelled the Hawks to the most unlikely win of this NBA post-season? (cough, cough) Or was it the supernatural forces of each blogger coming together like Power Rangers (or Voltar) to create an even greater power, a hero now known as Super JJ, Celtic Destroyer! I’m too exhausted and have lost my voice, so I can’t say. Good night all and the most pleasant dreams of a Wednesday victory. (cough, cough).

This is why I said in another post that I’d rather take an old fashion A$$ whipping form the Celtics than not make the playoffs. This couldn’t have happened if we hadn’t made it to the playoffs. Does anyone doubt this young team hasn’t grown up and come together as a result of this experience?
I was pleasantly shocked at the beginning of halftime when they interviewed Woodson. He actually said the Hawks needed to pressure the ball, get the rebound, and they needed to GET OUT AND RUN. Does anybody think we would have won this gm if Solomon Jones hadn’t played excellent DEF to close out the half? All of his blocks prevented certain scores and he kept Boston’s bigs from getting clean rebounds and put backs.
PEOPLE, WOODSON ACTUALLY COACHED HIS ANUS OFF. I CAN HONESTLY SAY HE HASN’T HURT THIS TEAM IN ANY WAY THE LAST 2 GMS. He’s doing everything I said he should do to disrupt Boston’s halfcourt dominance. Since applying pressure on their PG’s, they have been nonfactors, especially Sam I Am. Again, Boston’s key players were worn down by the middle of the 4th qtr. They couldn’t beat us on the OFF boards like they did the 1st half. They couldn’t rotate and protect the lane against JJ and Josh either.

Wow what a win. Ray, it still amazes me that we can’t go 1 blog entry without someone saying that we need to trade Josh Smith.
CP6, what game were you watching. The reason that he is taking big shots in these playoff games is because he wasn’t afraid to take shots in games 1, 2, 3, 4….81, 82, 83, 84, 85 and 86.
Now, we fans are reaping the benefits. Every hawk played well. Whoever the coach was that drew the game plan and convinced Woodson that these guys needed to run on offense and pick up full court man to man on defense needs to be signed as well.

The Canadian Press reports Paul Pierce was fined $25,000 for making a gang sign as he followed Al Horford toward the Hawk bench during Saturday’s game. The sign reportedly means death.
If all of this is true a fine is not enough. Paul Pierce should be suspended for the remainder of this season and then banned from the league.

This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for all season. With a high level of intensity and hustle, Josh can miss all 6 3 pointers, Al-ROY can score 4 points, we get 4 pts off the bench, Mr. Bibby can score 0 pts in 2nd half, we have 7 MORE turnovers than the opponent, Hawks can have standard 3rd qtr Woody talk letdown…AND WE STILL WIN AGAINST BOSTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Play hard, aggressively, & use your strengths…good things will happen.
If you are a Celtic, you have to be nervous because the Hawks are no longer intimidated by that gaudy record.

The price tag for Josh Smith has probably gone up….Great win tonight…. JJ and Josh Smith stepped up when we needed them…Bibby had a great first half…I love what the bench did although they did not score many points… Chills grabbed key rebounds, Solo, Law, and Mario played some solid D in their limited minutes..We need to defend that 3 pointer a lot better in the next game we cant give up that many open 3’s. I said they are going to punch us in the mouth and we have to respond, and boy they did.. I really want Marvin to succeed but he is way too one dimensional.. He really has to step it up.. If we can get the next game in Boston I think we will shock the world.

If they were there the season before also, their bags will be upgraded to reusable burlap. The back side of these bags have a stamp on them…property of the NY Giants
Mr. Bibby will give out a few for the season ticket holders that get to the game early.

First off, Congrats again Hawks on shockin the world. All I have to say is I’m happy to see the emotional Joe Johnson come out and play ridiculously. He proved to the world tonight why he belonged in the All-Star game. I just wish we could see him like this every night cuz then he’d be on a Kobe-Lebron level and the Hawks would be unstoppable. At any rate, the way he stepped up, took over the game, and forced the issue was a beautiful site to see. I’m just happy I was able to witness it in person. Anyway, GO HAWKS, SHOCK THE WORLD, and I’ll be there game 6.

TNT guys still think this is all about the Celtics. I wish I could show them my 12:48 PM post. Where is Barkley when I need him to bust Kenny & Chris.
Volman I may have to make a sign for Friday. I’ll work on the text.
Some potential ideas.
Commercials DON’T win games, Players DO.
Boston has a 3 party, but 4 games wins a series
Hawks game 5 motto, win AND go home
I’ll work on this later this week. I welcome suggestions from the Blog-universe.
Good to see the guy who grew up the farthest away from pro wrasslin’ took on the job like a champ tonight.
Brothaaaah
Let me tell you something. This series is an epic battle. To be the champ you have to beat the champ, but along the way there are contenders and pretenders. Boston can’t pretend that Atlanta doesn’t contend. The champs are out west, so give the Celtic love a rest. We know, that you know, this is a battle to the end. Those older Celtics are NOT the old Celtics. The 3 party wants a ring, but doesn’t have a thing.

Zaza is the man. Magic isn’t very good in-studio, but he’s damn right about Zaza standing up to KG. The Hawks needed that. The fans needed it. The fans needed Horford’s diss of Pierce the other night. Hell, we even needed Joe smack-talking E.T., didn’t we? Makes us feel like maybe these guys want to ball a little longer, doesn’t it?

Today’s News
I couldn’t be more excited. Who saw this coming? No really, be honest. I didn’t, and I’m tryin to find new ways to prepare crow, because that’s another serving coming up….hmmm…souffle perhaps, or a la mode? Perhaps “crow crumpets” and tea…
A few things observed:
Jhan suggested that Zaza Pachulia is really the third of the Klitschko brothers. Vitaly, Wladimir, and….Zaza. Yep, sounds right. Our reporters happened to be close by when the confrontation occurred. Our microphones were kinda staticy , but we think Zaza said, “I’m about to put a funky European size 17 directly up your narrow a$$ if you elbow me again…”
Paul Pierce knows what it’s like to be stabbed. So I guess those daggers JJ kept sticking into the Celtics in the 4th quarter were a familiar sensation….You’d think someone who had been knifed before would know better than to be throwing up gang signs. All I can say is don’t do it when you’re playing in L.A. (which might not be this year after all, heh heh).
So Kendrick Perkins and Marvin Williams could be suspended for leaving their respective benches during the scuffle. I don’t mean to sound like a hater, but I think that based on the 4 playoff games we’ve played so far…it’s obvious which team will suffer more for each player’s absence.
You should have heard what commentators were saying about Josh Smith. And no, I wasn’t watching the game on SportSouth. It was on TNT. According to Fratello and others, the guy is just now barely scratching the surface of his potential. With back-to-back near-30 point outings. Let’s think about this while his offseason offer sheets go higher and higher, and some dream of trading him so that we can get him out of the way of our true small forward of the future. Yeaahhhhh..
Little House on The Prairie Moment. Okay, maybe Marvin was doing his impression of Zaza. But I have NO idea what happened to him on his coast-to-coast-to-hardwood floor trip. I guess that caboose of his counter balanced him the wrong way when he was leaning forward…I’m sorry. I know that’s not nice. Neither was laughing uproariously as he showed us how to dribble with his knees before executing a very good swan dive. I’m sorry. That’s not nice….that was really his only bad play.
Kevin Garnett definitely didn’t want to have much to do with Zaza Klitschko. I mean, dude walked right up on him. So close, that KG probably knows exactly what Zaza had for dinner before the game…
Mike Bibby showed up again, this time scoring some. It was good to see. With Josh Smith’s price tag likely soaring, can we afford to keep this guy? Yeah, I know, I know. Enjoy the ride and shut up. Sorry. I just happen to know that the ride can stop at any time. And when it does….
Aw, hell with it. I’m enjoying the ride. I wasn’t before, as being right was sickening to the very stomach. Boy do I LOVE being wrong!
Just remember, Celtic fans will want to help rally their team. So, Hawks players…give ‘em hell and take the fans out of the game early. And don’t fall for any dirty tricks like Sam Cassell trying to bait JJ into fighting (so he could be thrown out…he was killing the Celts).
Come to think of it, doesn’t Sam Cassell remind you of someone? Like Gollum from Lord of the Rings? Yeah, you know…that f#cked up little hairless creature that kept causing trouble and hissing about it’s “precioussssss”. Sure looks like him….
Know what else is amazing? The Denver Nuggets have two superstars in ‘Melo and A.I., plus a good squad, and a good coach. They got swept in the first round. WE DIDN’T, and we’re playing the team with the best regular season record. We ROCK!
And I’m out…

To all of those who met up tonight, THANK YOU! This was a VERY SPECIAL thing for me to be able to put faces to all of these names on the blog here. I’ve been blogging here for a while and never thought I’d get to sit around for 15 minutes and talk basketball in the heat of a playoff game! I HONESTLY hope we can make that something that can happen over and over again for years to come! Beers and pretzels!
GREAT WIN by these young Hawks. You got ALL OF THE GUYS on TNT to apologize on national television for all of the jokes and put-downs….saying that the Hawks would not win another game.. I am proud of this team’s heart… Can they STEAL one on the road and advance at home? I honestly get chills thinking about it! And NO, not J-Chills!
Manny T, I’m thinking of doing a variation of my Sam Cassel/ET poster.. I got a LOT of laughs, but I always feel like I have to outdo what I had previously done.. so I might come up with some other posters for game 6.
I think your poster should either target the Fairweather fans of Boston or even Kevin “I’m too afraid of Zaza” Garnett. You seem like you’re on the right track with your ideas so far!
Boy did I LOVE seeing that video asking the FAIRWEATHER Boston fans what the starting lineup of the Celtics was!! Hilarious!
Mykhalc, wish you could be here with us man.. We are having some great times in Hawksville.. Great times.
Everyone, remember these times…because things will not always be this great! Who would have thought that this team could win twice against the almighty Boston? I surely didn’t…
And I won’t come down from cloud nine until I feel like it!!!

…Don’t know if you guys know or not, but on Hawksquawk there is a HUGE debate going on…
Apparently, Kevin Garnett pushed a referee during the altercation with Zaza.
There is video evidence of this…but will the league do anything about it? I heard from Hawksquawk that if you push a referee then you are suspended for a game or two I believe.. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
Guys, this could be big…and add in the Kendrick Perkins/Marvin Williams who were apparently on the court as well during the altercation…

Great game. I’m so glad I was able to watch this game after missing our first win. If we can steal a game in Boston, we can take the Celtics out.
Josh Smith is playing great on both ends of the floor. He’s not forcing the action and is really trying to do everything he can to back up his quote. I regret even mentioning his name in trade proposals.
Joe..what can I say ? A lot of Hawks fans have been down on him all season. 35 points against the league’s best defense (with one of the best perimeter defenders in Paul Pierce) shows that he deserves every accolade he has received.
Wow, man. I’m so excited for the Hawks after watching the painful days pre-Horford.
CALLING ALL HAWKS FANS Kevin Garnett pushed a referee twice during his altercation with ZaZa Pachulia. If he and Perkins were to get Game 5 suspensions, we could go on to shock the world. More information here

I’d rather see the Hawks win straight up rather than win because KG gets suspended. I know it’s tempting to say yeah suspend their best player and we’ll get the W, but you do realize everyone in the world is gonna be second-guessing whether or not this team is legit if that happens. Everyone is gonna be pointing at the KG suspension as the only reason why the Hawks win. The Hawks are a lot more confident now than they were in Game 1, and at the very least I think Game 5 will be close. Regardless I think David Stern learned his lesson from the Amare and Diaw suspensions last year… I think he knows by now what kind of public backlash there is when you suspend a high profile player. I doubt KG gets suspended.

Nothing will come of the Garnett elbow to the chest of official Ed Rush. This is the Celtics and the NBA,(David Stern), will not impose sanctions on one of the “chosen” teams.
This is the same NBA that fines the Hawks $50K for a scoring error and then fines Paul Pierce $25K for a death threat.
Starts to look like Pierce acted the punk a few years ago the night he got himself stabbed.
The NBA has worked hard to separate the league from the thug image and the gang mentality and now Paul Pierce destroys the entire effort in one night.
The entire Celtic organization is trying to smooth over the threat, even Doc Rivers whom I admire greatly, but the reality is that Paul Pierce should be done for the year - at the very least.

Doc Rivers - again I admire him but - has taken over from Phil Jackson as the ultimate cry baby.
Doc complained on every call, even those in the Celtic’s favor, during the first half of last night’s game.
Phil Jackson and the Bulls with Jordan and Pippen were the same way. One night in ATL we made note that one of the three complained on every call until the mid point of the 2nd quarter. Did not matter whether the call was against the Hawks - one of the three cried.

Convinced now about who’s afraid of whom? My little one win prognostication goes by the boards as well and Atlantans get to see three - I say, three home playoff games. Looks like the ASG is in the money. Would they up some salaries now and sign Josh Smith and Josh Childress.??
I still wonder about Woodson’s coaching however. Give JJ the ball and get out of the way doesn’t seem like much of a game-plan. But in this quarter it worked. I gotta’ believe Boston takes care of that in game # 5. BTW, I have it on good authority that nooses are being fashioned in downtown Beantown for Doc and the Gang, just in case they are needed.

This is from the Boston globe story on last night’s game:
**To make matters worse for the Celtics, it’s possible that Garnett and Kendrick Perkins could be suspended for Game 5 for their involvement in a second-quarter skirmish last night. Hawks forward Marvin Williams also is in jeopardy.
After a loose rebound with 7:24 left in the half, a frustrated Garnett gave Atlanta center Zaza Pachulia an elbow after the play was dead. Pachulia retaliated with what appeared to be a head butt. Players on both teams began to bunch up and mouth off, but the coaches ran on the floor to separate them.**
If both Garnett and Perkins, along with Marvin, are suspended then the Hawks have a very real opportunity in the Wednesday game.
I still doubt this will happen.

btw, i have never liked paul pierce’s game. he has always been the bad guy in my opinion. like kg and allen who has got the smoothest stroke but where were their big three last night in the fourth quarter? none of their big three could match j. smash and jj. i looked up at the start of the fourth quarter and dropped my mouth open to realize that smash had only one bound. he did it right in the fourth just in the nick of time. cant wait to see him on a four quarter tirade.

Besides, the world doesn’t pay this group of young men, the ASG does. So what the world remembers is irrelevant. They only remember who wins anyway. And that’s what the Hawks will be in the near future.

Here are some comments from one reasonable Boston fan on CelticsBlog.com.
http://www.celticsblog.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=64&topic=17053.0
~~~
Is it just me or are we going a bit too far with the “blaming others” excuse? If we cannot beat the Hawks, no matter what, with KG or without him, we are just not worthy of even having a shot at the title. Full stop.
It is not like the Hawks are one of the better teams in this league anyway. They were not even that “hot” - unlike the Warriors last season for example - going into the playoffs either (5-5 in their last 10 games), so this one, if we blow it, which I believe we wont, is entirely the Celtics fault, even sans Garnett.
A superior team just has to come through on the big stage, in close games but mainly in games that count. In the NFL Playoffs, the soccer World Cup, the improbable might happen and the better team can loose on a bad night and that’s it, there is no possible come back, everything is decided in one game. In a best of 7 (SEVEN!!!) games series you cannot possibly blame anyone but team if they cannot deny the Hawks and make it to the Conference smis.
If the NBA suspends Garnett, and I assume they will, after having seen the images, the rest of the guys should step up and take care of business at home, like they have proven they can during the regular season. And even if the Celtics were to loose game 5 and the series, you cannot blame it on Stern, because actually a team that supposedly has a shot at the title, should be able to close out the Hawks in 5 games max and overcome situations like these.
I agree with everything you said. If the Cs go on to lose this series I say the series was lost in game 3 when the Cs let the Hawks win and gave them hope. That made last night game the biggest game of the season to me and the Cs didn’t come through. They lost there heads and as a results they might lose two starters because of it. But again it all goes back to game 3 when Paul Pierce should have been the bigger man and just walk away from Horford. In some way I blame Doc Rivers for not having these guy forcus on the task at hand.
Whew, what a game.
Anyone else prefer that KG play tomorrow night? I do, because the Hawks are infamous for thinking that a short-handed team will rollover. I’d like to think that they have matured in the last 4 games, but I have my doubts.
For those watching from home (or who know where to find this stuff on the web), did Bibby take a shot in the 2nd half? Dude was on fire in the 1st half and then it seemed like he shut himself down. I was convinced that he would need to make at least one 4th quarter 3 for us to win last night. I’m concerned that he may have re-injured that thumb, since he opted not to shoot much after a sizzling 1st half.
Woody earned his extension last night. That team showed remarkable character during the assault early in each quarter. We entered the final quarter down by 10 and the team repsonded with complete confidence and resolve. Sure, players own a lot of that but so does the caoch. Woody deserves a new contract.
Whew, that was a helluva game.
Hey Doc, I agree with your post game observation of game 3. I two was at that game (my 1st Hawks game of the year). As I travel from Cola, SC to the game. I didn’t know what type of atmosphere to expect. I thought it would be alot C’s fans in the house however, I’m glad I was wrong. The Fans represented the Home team well. The energy in the building was unbelievable. People were still hype after the game as well. I rode the Marta to the game and folks was still pump to see the Hawks win. I like what Magic Johnson said last nite “It’s great to see this team win for the People/fans of Atlanta”. Needless to say, I will be at Game 6 this friday nite… Go Hawks..
Joe, Bibby did take a couple of 3’s in the 3rd quarter (early). He and Joe had some great looks but missed (about 4 or 5 open looks); That’s the only reason the Celts dominated that quarter.
It’s more lame that Marvin & Kendrick Perkins will probably get tossed also by the rule. On TV they did the zoom in on those feet on the court, but not that close to the action.
Astro Joe Nice meeting you last night. My jury is still out on Woody. Just because the team is playing the style they were supposed to play SIX MONTHS AGO, he doesn’t get coaching cred for being there.
That is not a Green Lantern ring on his finger. Still lots of concerns for the long run…is he committed to this style or was this the move of a guy 2 games from termination? This game was won with HEART, not strategy! Not hatin’ just sayin. Won’t rehash, but check 12:48AM post.
His best move might be whatever has been said to Zaza to get him in no flop mode against KG…unless Al-ROY said it to Zaza.
DENIZENS:
Make no mistake. Whoever is on the floor for the greenies in Boston will put up a hell of a fight. They lose control of the series if they don’t. And don’t underestimate the effect of the crowd on both teams and the referees. It’ll be a dog-fight(sorry Mike).
So, time for the next step. What’s Atlanta’s road record this year.? Time to grow some more. Let’s GO HAWKS.
Congrats on the win, Atlanta. We in Toronto couldn’t duplicate that feat, instead we blew a lead and left the playoffs after the Magic rebounded us into submission (5 games). I am going to play golf now, but I will still be watching for you guys to upset Boston —- people laughed at me when I said it, but they are not laughing now!
By the way, if you guys don’t want Josh Smith, we’ll take him for sure
Looking forward to attending the biggest Hawks game in almost a decade this Friday night.
The Hawks do not want/need KG suspended.
If he’s suspended, then the Celtics win at home on Wednesday anyway, and then he comes back to prove a point on Friday.
Let him play. No need for any suspensions after last night.
Just play ball.
MannyT, same here man, it was real cool to meet all of you guys last night. A genuine pleasure.
Look, I’m not saying that Woody found the secret decoder ring in his Frankenberry cereal over the weekend and is ready to begin winning at an .800 clips for the next 5 seasons. And heaven knows that he can’t go with a 6.5 man rotation over 82 games (he clearly works better with a super-short bench). But if Smith will likely be rewarded for his play in the last 2 games (and we know that he will), then Woody needs to get some credit too. This team responded when they took hard shots in this game. Both in the first 3-4 minutes of the game and when down by 10 entering the 4th. They didn’t come back simply because of the style of play. It also had to do with the character of the team. And Woody MUST get credit for this team’s character development.
doc:
Just read the Garnett/Pachulia thang by Smith and what should be in the left column but an AJC poll question about whom would you choose, Pierce or Johnson(the Celtics cast-off, not good enough to keep guy).
What buffoon from the AJC makes up these polls.???!!! FIRE THEIR AZZ.
Why would anyone choose Pierce, a punk-azz gangsta’ from the NBA’s recent soiled past, and been lookin’ back instead of ahead to the future of this franchise. I swear if the Hawks win next in Boston they will close the Celtics out in 6. It’s that close too. And the fittings are being secured to the north end of Faneil Hall for the garrot in waiting.
I do not want to see anyone suspended for the next game…especially KG. We can win this series on our own and I don’t want any * next to it. We were behind the Celts bench last night and all I remember the whole game is Paul Pierce staring into the oblivion with a towel over his head every time out, haha.
I honestly am still sitting here in a state of semi-shock. The Celtics beat these guys in Atlanta in the next-to-last game of the season with the bench playing most of the second half. Now they have lost two straight games to the Hawks. It really is unimaginable to me. Maybe those 66 wins during the regular season really do mean nothing. All of the other top caliber teams are taking care of business in the playoffs. This does not bode well for a championship. I simply hope right now that the C’s can make it to the next round. (emphasis added by me)
Raptors fan, welcome aboard. Thanks for the support. I hope we keep Smoove and I’ll be the first person to admit I was wrong about him. He has really put it all together in this series. What’s even better is how even ESPN analysts (Mike Golic) are asking for apologies to Atlanta for saying there was no reason to even play this series. Wonder what Stephen A Smith is thinking?
Astro Joe I agree that if KG is suspended Atlanta may get overconfident, and it was a hungry squad that beat Boston these last two games.
They need to look at Golden State for inspiration.
Woody on First Take…
I don’t type that fast, but this is the core of what he said.
Trying to keep anyone from getting ejected, that’s why he was on there being a peace maker so quickly.
Hopes no one is suspended from the fight. Woody needs all of his guys.
4th quarter strategy was to get through the 4 one shot fouls to get to penalty.
Woody just put the ball in Joe’s hands to make plays.
Woody doesn’t concern himself with his doubters.
Made a good home stretch run over the last 22-23 regular season games. Anything can happen in a 7 game series.
I think Woody is a nice guy. Until the season ends, my jury stays out on him. I do have two comparable situations from this year.
1. Felton at UGA He did not deserve to be in the post season based on record, but a late run in the SEC tournament made it happen.
2. Cheeks in Philly He got an extension in February. From that date until FRIDAY, APRIL 25, who did a better job with a young team? Mo did. Who had better individual talent? Woody did.
Right now they are both 2-2 in a series the experts would have expected them to lose in 4 or 5 games.
Note Cheeks extension is for 1 season with a team option for a 2nd. That deal said we’ll give you a short leash. Note it was before they went on the big end of season push w/o any roster changes.
When possible, it is always insightful for me to compare the other view of my situation.
Play this little game for me TODAY.
Imagine Woody coaching the Sixers TODAY versus Cheeks coaching the Hawks TODAY. Think about your expectations for the rest of this season AND the next season or two.
Me thinks my better-Cheeks is better than your better-Woody. Love this commercial! I won’t ask for my money back, but I do have a list of demands…after the season.
That said, my jury is still out on Woody. He is salvageable.
What would I do w/o my WAF/BWAF!
I hate to be negative, but what was that timeout with 3 seconds left for last night!!!!!
They showed Woody drawing up a play…WHY, there were 3 seconds left we were up by 3 and had just got the ball inbounds. The celtics were coming to foul Chill and Woody calls a timeout????? SO instead of being on the foul line , we then had no time outs and had to in bound the ball AGAIN! So in other words he called a timeout to draw up an inbounds play when we already inbounded the ball.
I couldn’t believe what I saw.
could we have imagined a worse scenario than getting bounced in the first round by the hawks and getting outcoached by mike woodson? i still think we’ll take this series but suddenly i’m not as confident after this game.
Hey Sekou it was good to hear you on First Take. If they would have interviewed Terrance Moore I would have trashed my television.
Hey dmaryb the Hawks are winning because Woody is finally making adjustments. Swallowing his pride and letting his young players play was the key. My boy Solomon Jones did a great job defending the paint at the end of the 2 quarter. This was the same guy who did not get off the bench versus Miami in a meaningless game.
My bad…I missed Sekou on First Take at the start of the show. Hearing him now that they are rerunning the program.
Quick, but nice Sekou.
It is about making plays!
Ryan Russillo claims there was no reason for the Celts to respect the Hawks. He forgets that when you are better, you don’t let teams hang around…they all must have some form of NY Giants Alzheimer’s in Massachusetts.
After winning 2 games we know there are no green Superman capes. I hope the Celtics don’t learn that lesson.
Good News, it’s known that i’m not a WOODSON supporter but he definitely made the right call on that TO before the inbounds by CHILS. CHILS had already FAILED to get the ball in on a previous inbounds play. smart call IMHO.
JOE, i’m with ya on a couple of things. first, i want all teams at full-strength. i hope there are no suspensions even tho i have not watched the replay yet. but the DOC might be right. STERN, if he is goin’ to stay consistent, will issue suspensions. in defense of MARVIN and PERKINS, standin’ up to see what’s goin’ on, regardless of where their feet actually were, would NOT be a common-sense approach to issuin’ any suspensions!!! but i gotta feelin’ DOC might have called this correctly regardin’ STERN!!???!!
and JOE i do think WOODSON will get an extension just like i know SMOOVE will get paid!!! but i think WOODSON will be on a short leash next season!!! the ASG are the BASG but lunatics they ain’t!!! they see PHILLIPS can be filled!!! they see they have a home-town, home-grown upcomin’ NBA talent in SMOOVE and they KNOW they GOTTA pay him. if this franchise is truly tryin’ to become legit then there is no way they will not keep the nucleus together. and in my mind that nucleus is AH, JJ, JS, JC, MB, and ACIE. MARVIN could be the person that brings in the needed 5. but in fairness to MW, the cat is young and needs time, wherever he plays…IMHO!!!
NAJEH-actually, this series is a reflection of the regular season for Woodson. He tried to control every aspect of the team until the last part of the season. He saw his HC career fading fast so he just backed off and put it in the hands of 7 players, particularly JJ and Bibby. These players then led Woodson to the playoffs.
When the playofffs started, Woodson tried to complete with Boston playing their halfcourt gm. After getting embarrassed both gms, he let the young Hawks out of the cage and they started running and haven’t stopped. However, in the playoffs, he has actually done some decent coaching. He certainly hasn’t hurt the team in any way. We’ve all witnessed the growth and maturity of these young high flying Hawks. Maybe, just maybe we’re witnessing the maturity and growth of Mike Woodson as a HC. I just don’t want anyone, especially a HC, impeding the progress of these young PREDATORS. We have enough of a problem with our SAASG.
Thanks Ryder, you can be sure I’ll stick around and keep tabs on the Hawks playoff run. Get past the Celtics, and the winner of Washington/Cleveland looms. Neither are world beaters… but I won’t jump too far ahead here. And as you guessed, I am a Josh Smith (‘smoove’?) fan
