Crazy like a … Woodson?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Editor’s Note: Commenting on this blog has been closed. To continue the conversation, join Mark Bradley’s Monday morning column recapping last night’s Game 1 of the Hawks-Celtics series.
Boston - Mike Woodson is either the most delusional coach in the history of NBA basketball or missing his calling on the $400-a-plate rubber chicken circuit.
Because he’s talking championship with his team set to face the league-leading Boston Celtics in a first-round playoff matchup just hours from now, while the rest of the [real] world expects his team’s season to end in the next four games.
Everything Woodson’s done up to this point screams title chase - from the photocopied images of the Larry O’Brien trophy taped to the inside wall of all his players’ lockers to the diamond-dripping finger weight he’s wearing around town now, courtesy of his championship run with Detroit in 2004 as Larry Brown’s top assistant.
I don’t know if you should admire the guy for believing in the unbelievable or help sign the petition to get him committed for the same the thing.
On paper this series shouldn’t even be close. One team ripped off a league-best 66 wins this season while the other slid into the playoffs on its backside with a meager 37 wins.
But maybe Woodson is counting on the Celtics’ five-year playoff drought being a bigger deal than anyone else. Maybe he sees chinks in the Celtics’ Teflon armor that the rest of us haven’t seen. Or maybe, just maybe, Woodson is crazy enough to think his team can pull off the unthinkable.
He’s already succeeded in baiting Celtics coach Doc Rivers (with the aid of certain member of the Boston media) into a verbal debate about which team has the most to lose in this series.
When peppered about this by reporters Saturday, Rivers got heated.
“They have the series to lose,” Rivers told reporters. “They have the same thing to lose that we do. I love when people say they have nothing to lose. That’s a bunch of [expletive]. They have just as much to lose as us. If they lose this series, they’re going to really disappointed. If we lose this series, we’re going to be really disappointed. I’ve been the eighth seed as a coach and an eighth seed as a player, I thought the same pressure as the first seed. You want to win that series.”
Sorry Doc.
But you’re wrong.
So wrong you make Woodson seem like the sane one coach in this series.
Anything over four games is a victory for these Hawks, at least in basketball’s court of public opinion.
Anything over five games will send shockwaves through the NBA ranks. A Hawks win in this series (play along here, folks, be nice to the crazy coach) and this city gets tossed upside down by fire-breathing Celtics fans that will expect Rivers to be shipped out of town on the first thing smoking.
There’s no shortage of motivation for either team (or either coach for that matter).
One just happens to be in close touch with visitors from another dimension while the other would just as soon get rid of these visitors as quickly as possible.
Problem is, the only thing we’ll know for sure after tonight, is that somebody is three wins away from either shocking the world or doing exactly what they were supposed to do.

Woody is not just preparing these guys for this series, but future ones (as in next season). Instead of treating this like a free ticket courtesy of a good friend, he has them thinking that they have earned the berth and have earned the right to compete for the trophy. And he’s right.
As usual, I tend to like what he does outside of game situations. It’s just those 48 minutes of game time where he loses me. But props to his approach of treating this like a playoff series and not the opening of a coronation ceremony.

I’m not a Woodson fan but I have to admire his “cohonnes”. Let’s face it he has to be positive. Even if he isn’t feeling it inside he has to perceive it or else he won’t achieve it. However, whether he wins a game out of this series or not, he has to go. There’s no two ways about it.
Who would I like to see? Jeff van Gundy. He’s the man. At least we’d play some consistent defense.
Anyway, let’s get behind the Hawks and wish them all the best. It really irks me to hear the various analysts totally disregarding us. Some do not even mention our name. I don’t know about anyone else but I am just disgusted with the bias and total disrespect. I guess this is the time when we have to earn our respect!!
Go Hawks!!!!
Nuff respect!!!

LOOK IF U GO INTO A FIGHT THINKING YOU DONT HAVE A CHANCE YOU WILL GET YOUR BUTT KICKED.. AND IF YOU ARE IN THER PLAYOFFS AND YOU LACK CONFIDENCE U DONT NEED TO BE PLAYING BECAUSE THE GAME IS PART MENTAL SO I THINK THE COACH IS DOING A GOOD JOB TELLING THE PLAYERS THEY HAVE A CHANCE. ITS NOT LIKE A TEAM WITH THE BEST RECORD IN THE NBA AND #1 SEED HASNT BEEN BEATEN BY A 8TH SEED IN THE PLAYOFFS…

I’m putting zero stock into tonight’s game other than the fact Atlanta will be back on national TV for the first time in ages.
Most of the time the home teams are able to exert their will in the first game of a series, especially in the first round. The home crowd is hyped, and the visiting team is usually on its heels early. It will be tough on such a young and inconsistent team like the Hawks.
The real key will be Game 2 on Wednesday and if Woodson is able to make adjustments.
If Atlanta possessed any kind of discipline like the Utah Jazz (ironically the only road team to win a game so far) then they may have a chance, but they don’t.

If Woody didn’t approach this expecting to win a title, the Hawks and Woody’s career would be in serious trouble. It’s his job to win these games, and if he doesn’t believe he can do his job, he shouldn’t be there in the first place. Maybe he is delusional, but I’d rather he be delusional than approach this with HB Ando’s mentality.
But no matter what Terence Moore thinks, that’s not justification to keep him around.

I just hope to see competitive basketball. If the Hawks can avoid one of those 14-2 Celtic runs and avoid foul trouble, they can make these 4 quarter games. I’d give them a puncher’s chance if not for the lack of bench depth.

If the Hawks compete well and play smart in this series, Woody will be back. That’s just the way it is. I don’t like it, but I can’t see ASG firing the guy if the team fights a 66-16 team tooth and nail in a first-round series. If they play terribly, don’t run plays, and look completely clueless out there, I hope ASG will draw the proper conclusions.

I think the reason why Woodson is having these delusional thoughts about championships is because thats the only possible way he can keep his job. Anything less then he needs to be fired.

I think most people get it wrong. I think Woodson is doing a great job considering he has Billy Knight making all the wrong picks. I have been no fan of us losing these last 4 years, but face it, it has been a rebuilding period and that’s exactly what we were told and expected. It usually takes a few years with 19yos to play like a team. Not everyone developes as quickly as Horford!! This should rightfully be Woodson and the team’s moment to shine!! Any win s we get are building blocks for next year and it will make them that much more wanting to make it back. Just hopefully it won’t be by backing in next year…

Hawks not a consistent defensive team? What you smoking, Nookah? Did they have defensive lapses toward the end of the season, when their bodies were wearing down (especially Joe, who stirs the drink and makes all the other cogs turn)? Absolutely. On the other hand, name me one other coach with a team this young who were rated as high in so many defensive categories this year. This team WILL D up on the Celtics. I guaran-dam-tee you.

yeah jami from earlier post, i read it and meant to say thanks, post may not have gone through.
think mark jackson will be gone and to the kicks as he has a relationship with walsh already. last year i wanted adelman or the guy the griz got last year. think we need to get some new blood out of who is left this year, a really sharp guy who can communicate and has some cred as a player probably working in a system that has a proven track record like the spurs. van gundy has lost some of his shine this year the way adelman has done the job he has, not sure about carlyle either. maybe drew will get his shot, think hubie was crying out that he wanted to coach this team when he wa on a radio show back in february.
as far as woody, it is about showing his owners what a trooper he is. unfortunately he is not as innovative between the lines if you think this show qualifies as such. funny, i think, like someone else that woody might come back the second time as a better coach like cox did in toronto. still like the guy but he freezes up game time with his signature look of WAF now known as BWAF.
for mike GO HAWKS!!!

Jeff van Gundy? Are you serious? What is he doing now…Broadcasting, and why is he doing it because he couldn’t coach Houston over the first round hump. If he comes to ATL I see quite a few of the good players being shipped out. If ATL has great success in this year’s playoffs he should be kept for next season. Right now that’s up in the air, but let them do well this year and he will be back.

Say what you want to say about Woody, but he has the right attitude and mentality for his team. With all the misfortunes the hawks have had, in the past loosing Jason Collier, a bad draft pick in Sheldon williams, ASG squabble, you name it. This team has endured and made the playoffs, regardless if one even thinks they back in, which they did not. I bet Indiana, New Jersey, and ther other 6 teams in the east wish they had the eighth seed. People tend to forget that Woody is taking a young hawks team and helping turn them in to men. When these guys become seasoned vets it will be, because of Mike Woodson. You may not want to give this guy credit, but he has won a championship as an assistant coach and seems to know how to motivate, the players, right now I think Mike Woodson has an edge over Doc Rivers in the coaching departmen because he has won and know’s what it will take for the Hawks to accomplish the unthinkable, and that is beat the celtics.

Well, well, well. I’m liking whats being said. Looks like somebody’s coming around. If Bro’ Woody, figures out this substitution thing, we might really win this series. It’s not like he hasn’t been here before. On the one hand, I’ve seen him do jack - didley dfawing up plays. On the other, you just can’t deny he’s done a better than decent job with these youngsters. He has lacked in the development of his bench, but I think he deserves another crack at it when he gets at least one more bona-fide player.A BIG. They may not have any picks, but I garauntee somethings in the works. PEACE from the NATIVE. See ya’ at the game, yo’!!

Today In The News
Okay, that has to be one of the most bizarre series of articles I’ve ever seen. First Schultz zigs, then Moore zags, then Sekou runs over both with his own piece. Actually, that’s how it usually goes, but in this case, it’s about a subject no talked of before: the Hawks in the playoffs.
Let me start by saying I always back the team, and am looking forward to our guys showing that they are made of sterner stuff than their record suggests. I look for a good effort from them. Scratch that…I desire to see no less than a stellar effort. The results, be they wins or losses, will be what they are. That’s a mixture of positivity and objectivity.
First, Mike Woodson has to say what he’s said. It’s his job. His team is in the playoffs, and he’s still the coach right now. Why are we acting like he’s going the extra mile? Nobody’s told him he’s fired yet (that we know of). So, he’s got to do what he is being paid to do. Secondly, what Woodson does is recordable. As in, any and all media outlets involved will report his every spoken thought, word, and deed. So let’s think about this: if your every move is put in black and white print, you might want to be careful as heck about everything you do or say, no? Furthermore, you want to put the best foot forward that you can. Why? Because any day could be your last, and a defeatist attitude won’t earn you that next job.
Think of it as quitting your job and not putting in the two week notice (or whatever is considered policy/courtesy). Nobody wants to hire a person like that because they may do the same thing to you when they don’t want to work for you anymore. Nobody wants to hire a person who has a bad attitude, despite the fact that they still have a job. Better yet, nobody wants to keep such a person.
So is Mike Woodson a saint? No. He’s an ordinary guy. An ordinary guy who is trying to survive in the world that he works in. At least he has the brains and the class to know what to do as far as that’s concerned. But so does every other person in his position who cares about having the job that they currently have.
At the end of the day, it takes more than class to do this job. It takes more than a career .333 (or something like that) “winning” percentage. At the end of the day, a guy can either do the job or he can’t. He either fits or he doesn’t. No skills behind the wheel? Then you can’t drive the team bus.
And with that, I’m out….GAME ON!

When you think about it — the inexperience, the fact that Joe Johnson is playing against the team that drafted him, the fact that the Celtics are really really good… that wasn’t that bad of a quarter. They could have very easily let the double digit lead continue to expand, but to their credit they made a little run and cut it down to something manageable. I’ll be happy if they can keep the Celtics within reach all game, and if they do, who knows what could happen.

drmaryb’s FAB FIVE workin’ hard. Childress effective on defense. My goodness, the hawks are quick to the ball, and on occasion have played superior team defense this half. Horford has the championship experience and the winner’s ability to get the job done.
In all, a great first half for the Hawks, in spite of their poor perimeter shooting.
Atlanta has done a great job taking advantage of their athleticism and withstood the pressure in the beginning.

HAWKS in the Playoffs can you believe it!!
If it wasn’t the Hawks and verse the Celtics I would have to say this game is over after watching the first half. But the Hawks played as well as you can expect in this type of situation. Woodson has put in all the players that you expect him to and Horford is playing outstanding!! This actually looks like a game the Hawks could win, but first thing is first, they have got to start making some 3’s. Boston is all over JJ, Bibby has got to be much more aggressive!!! Next they have to slow down Cassell when he comes in the game. (Attach him on the offensive in)

The coach needs to let him know his role and Marvin needs to step it up he needs to show us what a top 5 draft pick plays like if not he can hit the damn road

BWAF’s amazing locker-room motivation skills strike again. As usual the Hawks come out completely flat in the 2nd half. It goes without saying but you can’t afford to come out flat against a team that’s much better than you when they are at home. And WTF is up with our backcourt… Steve Smith says they should “dominate” but instead they are getting “dominated”. If we lose because the young forwards screw up, that’s understandable, but right now we’re losing because our highly-paid backcourt is playing like sh-t.

If I had to pick five Hawks right now to get this game turned around, I’d have to go with Salim, Childress, Josh Smith, Al Horford, and… Zaza.
Seriously, it’s not like Zaza is playing well, but somehow the Hawks are +10 with him on the floor today. I think KG and Perkins just look at his ugly mug and get scared into missing the shot or something. But our starting backcourt is playing terrible, and the Flying Billys (our collection of 6’8” forwards) are playing OK with the exception of Marvin. I’d like to see Salim get his shot going too.

Celtics in three. The FCC, citing decency rules, will refuse to allow a Game 4 to be televised and Stern will rule the Hawks violated the dress code (by dressing in uniform and impersonating a playoff team) and thus forfeit Game 4
The Sprit ownership will clone Billy Knight (so they can have one 24/7 apologist for not drafting Chris Paul, and another 24/7 apologist for not drafting Deron Williams) but tellingly, each Knight will refuse to shake hands with the other.

The criticism of Mike Woodson by Bob and Smitty is getting less and less subtle by the day. Bob Rathbun just launched into a long description of how Leon Powe scored 22 points in the final game of the season and gained valuable experience to contribute in the playoffs. If that’s not a direct criticism of Woodson plastering Acie Law, Solomon Jones, etc. to the bench, I don’t know what is.
When the 2nd most notorious homer in the city of Atlanta (after Skip Caray of course) is calling out the coach during a playoff game you know it’s time for change.

You can’t blame Woodson for this one. He had the team in position at the half (only down by 9), you come out in the third and miss at least 3 open looks. You leave Rondo, Cassel open and they are going to knock down shots. Players have to adjust as well and thats what the playoffs are about. Our ROY is not suppose to carry the team when JJ and Bibby are suppose to be the ones with experience but cant knock down open looks or free throws

Seems to me every time Jeremy’s in the game, he shows that he’s athletic, he has 3 point range, and he can shoot off the dribble. He hasn’t really proven much else, but seriously, what can Marvin do that he can’t?

The big thing to see is how these Hawks respond second game. Let’s just hope they come out with more reckless abandon and nothin-to-lose mentality. Besides Horford and Childress, I felt like no one came out with any energy. Everyone else played uptight and too cautious when we should be playin fearless. Bibby and JJ showed that playoff experience doesnt mean jack. Both need to step up big time next game if we’ll have any chance of winning a game. Finally, I think we gotta speed the pace of the game cuz there’s no way we win running half court offense. Let’s see if our coach can make any adjustments. I seriously doubt it though.

BEAT DOWN IN BEANTOWN!
In case you missed it the Atlanta Hawks were annihilated by the Boston Celtics on Sunday night. As I said would happen in Sekou Smith blog last week and was subsequently attacked by the delusional Hawks fans, the Atlanta Hawks are painfully overmatched in this series. To matters worst it is hard for me to believe that a team that finished eight (8) games under 500 was talking so much trash leading up to game one about the best team record wise in basketball. The Hawks are a playoff team in name only. They may be in the playoffs, but they are essentially the same team as they were last year. This team is suffering not from coaching, but from poor draft choices that will cause this franchise and its fans to suffer for years to come. You only need to look at what Chris Paul did in game one of the Hornets series to see what I mean. So, Hawks fans you can thank a very weak Eastern conference for allowing your team to make the playoffs, but like I said in the blog last week, it is going to be a very quick exit.

Really, Kelvin? You predicted ahead of time in the blog last week that the Hawks would lose to the Celtics? You mean you have been given some kind of extra-sensory ability that allows you to just see into the future and realize, before any of the rest of us, that the team with the best record in the league will beat an under-.500 team in the playoffs? The team that is full of young and inexperienced players is overmatched by the team that has one and possibly three future Hall of Famers in the starting lineup? Wow! What a prophet you are! I wish I was you, Kelvin. I wish I had the amazing powers of perception that you do. If only we all had the insight that you do, Kelvin, maybe we could just not play the playoffs at all and just let Boston rest up until the 2nd round when they play the winner of the Cleveland-Washington series.

Mike Bibby - 5 points on 2-10 shooting, 1 assist in 34 minutes. No consistency - it’s all or nothing with this guy.
Where is the spark off the bench for the Hawks? J-Chill does his thing, but he has no perimeter game. They could sure use a guy like T-Lue right now - a veteran who is able to step up and make the clutch shot.

Kelvin, we’re not delusional. We were relying on playoff veterans to play like playoff veterans, which would have made this a MUCH closer game! Al Horford had a playoff debut DOUBLE-DOUBLE and kept KG relatively quiet (8 for 19), and Childress played like a genius. Interesting how you neglected to mention that. JJ and Bibby had an uncommonly off night, otherwise you would have been too scared to post on these boards. SHUT UP, PLAY BALL, LET’S GO HAWKS!!!

HORFORD AND CHILLDRESS WERE THE ONLY HAWKS THAT SHOWED UP TO PLAY. BIBBY HAS PLAYED VERY PREDICTABLE LATELY, HE BRINGS THE BALL UP, THEN PASSES TO JOE, AND FADES BEYOND THE 3 POINT LINE, AND MISSES. A POINT GUARD’S JOB IS TO CREATE AND PENETRATE, HE’S NOT DOING THAT. ON A POSTITIVE NOTE, THIS IS GOOD EXPOSURE FOR THE YOUNG GUYS. We need better players than Marvin and Pachulia eating all the minutes that they do. Point blank.
If it was at all possible, I would have preferred keeping Lue and Johnson….2 bodies at guard….and making some kind of deal that involved Marvin Williams for a decent/good BIG.
With all these streaky games Bibby has I dont see how much better he could have been than Anthony Johnson and Lue.
PG wasnt the MAIN reason we were losing, as the record clearly shows.
The thing with Bibby is just that during games Rathbun and Steve Smith always over hype him when he goes and hit 2 or 3 back to back jumpers, or maybe Three 3’s in a quarter. They go on and on about how he was in Sacramento, but in reality T-Lue had been doing the same kind of things.
Maybe it was an upgrade but not big enough at all.

Calm down, it’s like I said earlier this Game 1 blowout will teach the young (re: YOUNG) Atlanta Hawks that they must be ready to step up their game come playoff time.
Actually I think Woodson did a decent job. My only complaint about him is that he did not put Josh Smith back in the game when the Hawks had their run in the 2nd quarter. He may have not been scoring but he gave KG fits on the defensive end and would’ve prevented Boston from grabbing so many offensive boards during that stretch.
That said, tonight’s game was lost at the point guard spot, the one area where Atlanta has a clear advantage. When Rajon Rondo is making like Chris Paul then something’s wrong here. Bibby played with no tenacity and no sense of urgency. That has GOT to change if Atlanta is going to make the proper adjustments in Game 2.
Ok, Atlanta got knocked down. The real resolve will be do they have the maturity to back it up?
Horford and JJ played well tonight. If i’m Woodson I begin calling more plays for them in an inside-outside offense and free up Marvin and Bibby. This way you don’t rely strictly on jump shots in the beginning.
Will Woodson be able to make the necessary adjustments for Wednesday?

Doom and Gloom, you may trying to be funny, but I’m sure AJ and Lue would have done more than Bibby. AJ would have at least drawn fouls and got to the line and probably knocked down a couple of threes. On top of that, Lue has shown me his shooting is more consistent than Bibby’s so screw that!!! Lorenzen Wright and Shelden could have been fouls kept off of Josh Smith and Horford, and I still would rather have saw Wright and Shelden in the game over PACHULIA.

Outside the game, he’s probably ok. I wish he’d stay out of the locker room at half time.
I think the Philly game helped the Celts to focus more than the Hawks.
This blog gets some love in the NBA series blog
Fortunately, it’s not really win or go home in the NBA. If the young guys can take this game as a lesson on intensity and focus, we have until Wednesday to make some adjustments.
It was great to see Al-ROY get his, but it is a team game. For us to do better, the ball and the players are going to have to move on offense.
Defensively, they might need chapter 13 from the last blog. Seems like the Celts consistently found ways to get Bibby guarding front court players and Al-ROY guarding perimeter players who were going to the basket.
It must be hard for Woody to fold his arms with bling that big on his hand. I hope there is a secret compartment in the ring with a new Jedi Mind Trick in it.
Hoping for better things on Wednesday.

If Bibby comes out next game and plays this bad sit him and play Law. Law is quicker, a better defender, and is a better penetrator. Start Childress and sit Duck down somewhere. It is amazing that the coach has not realized yet that Childress is less effective playing pg. The first half when he did not have to play pg he played well. The second half he was playing point and did nothing. JJ has to recognize the double and triple team a lot quicker. Pachulia is terrible. This is Marvins third year and he is still doing the same crap he was doing his rookie year. Fumbling the ball out of bounds, missing easy lay ups because he wont dunk it, passing the ball when he is at the rim. I dont want to hear this he is still young and will get better stuff. I just dont think he will be the player BK thought he would be. I would take Danny Granger over him right now. I know someone will say we have to get over this who we should have taken stuff but im sorry when you see what Chris Paul and Deron Williams are doing night after night then you see Marvin not do much at all its just damn frustrating. I just hope they make the second game competitive.

I’m that guy from Sacramento who wrote that long a$$ piece on here about Bibby when he got traded… does anybody remember anything that I said about him? Well, if you do remember… do you believe me just a little bit by now?
I saw the game and wasn’t surprised at all about Bibby’s play. He, in my eyes and in everybody else’s eyes from Sacramento, played like the Bibby that we were all happy to get rid of. He’s not the Bibby from ‘01 or ‘02 AT ALL. He’s showing his typical playing somewhat decent only 1 out of every 10 or so games. If some of you think that it’s a slump or something that he’s going through, then it must be a 5-6 year long slump cause that’s who he’s been forever.
Ok, enough about Bootsy-Bibby. Al Harford is a beast. I never really got to see that kid play before these playoffs and that dude is awesome. The Hawks are lucky to have that kid on their roster for sure.
Another thing I noticed is that Mike Woodson is a moron. Every time one of the reporters would get an interview with him, or repeat something that he said about the game, I was just like…. WTF? Those are the most generic answers I’ve ever heard. You could pull anybody from the stands and get the same damn answers from them. Also, where in the hell is the coaching for the Hawks. I know one thing for sure… even more so than your team needing to dump Bibby as soon as possible (which will be hard because of the entire nation watching him on TV throughout this series, everybody’s gonna know how $h1tty he is), you need to dump that bonehead of a coach. The Hawks have talent in the players, but what good is that talent without proper coaching.
Either way, should pretty much be a no brainer as to how this series is going to end.

The doo-doo birds have flown in and landed in this blog. When the whining starts and the cats turn on each other. That’s exactly the time to stand up and let go of your excessive arrogance to see this for what it is, a rich children’s game! You are getting all wrought up over the antics of a group of rich children-men. And what have you done to prove you don’t belong on the same level as these guys you are trashin’?
Too many of you deserve to have your mammas take you into the house and sit you down at the kitchen table to tell you what’s what, about REAL life, not a stupid game. For one example, why don’t you focus like Al has done on YOUR business, rather than stickin your nose into others’ affairs? You can’t do any better than Bibby and JJ, so shut your mouth! You think that you have a right to talk trash about any of these guys?
Only God has that right, and I don’t read anywhere He gave the little chicken bugs in the back row any voice in telling other folks what they are.
Too many of you aren’t “fans” if that is what you claim to be of any team. I know some of the Celtics if they read your remarks about the guys they are playing against, why they would be ashamed to have you even watching the game….let alone talking trash about the team that represents you. Where are your manners? You let the score tell the tale, we don’t need your mouth insulting the integrity of these boy-men out there playing a children’s game for your benefit!
The score will tell the tale. And when its all over, it will be clear what the management needs to do. Until then. Show some respect.

Woodson is an idiot. When you finish 8 games under .500 and happen to make the playoffs you CANTgo in with a mentality saying “Well we’re gonna go in here doing what got us here.”
lol….but Woodson did.
Same Ol Same Ol
Even though a player (bibby) was struggling bad, he still continued to get big minutes
Childress and Stoudamire at the point rather than getting Law in there.
Josh Smith with the same bad shot selection and trying to handle the ball beyond his means.
Marvin’s same gay “moves” off the dribble that never work.
That BULL didnt work before what makes Woodson think it’s going to work in the playoffs…and against BOSTON at that.
If we’re gonna get blown out, I’d rather see us get blown out mixing it up getting more guys playing time, running different plays (perhaps running more offense through horford?, I dont know SOMETHING) at least trying to FIND something different to be competitive or win, rather than getting blown out doing the SAME crap that got us blown out by teams like Charlotte!!!

Najeh, let me clarify one thing: the “mentality” which you attribute to me, juxtaposed to Woodson’s bravado, is apples and oranges. My opinions, as a fan and a critic, are not to be confused with what I would think, feel, say or do, if my role was that of coach. No one is asking me to assume Woody’s perspective, when I join in on the blog.
Woody is doing, and saying, exactly what a man in his position should. His team couldn’t be a bigger underdog, in this series. And he has to know that, short of some type of miracle, he’s a dead man walking. So, Rivers is WRONG. Woody really doesn’t have anything to lose. And given the teams that Rivers has had to coach, as recently as last year, he, of all people, should understand the idea that Woody has nothing to lose.
It’s ironic, because late last season, the brilliant Bill Simmons was calling for the firing of Doc Rivers, at least 3 times a week. Look, Doc didn’t become a coaching genius overnight. The only difference between this years’ Doc, and last years’ Doc, is the roster Danny Ainge gave him. 24 wins last year, and 66 this year. How much credit should Doc get for either year?
Woody is underwhelming, as a head coach. There’s no real doubt about it. But what would Woody do with a roster like the Celtics? The buck still stops with the front office, just like it did in Boston, before last summer.
So fire Woody. If the ASG throws him under the bus, and allows Billy to stay, then they will get what they deserve. And the fans will get the shaft, when we go absolutely no where, next season. When Billy hires another underwhelming, unqualified puppet.
But don’t confuse that statement as an endorsement of Woody. Just be clear that firing Woody, as the sole change in the organization, will NOT lead us to a big improvement next year. He is but a piece of what ails this franchise, and a smaller one than Billy, by a mile.
I still find it hard to fathom that some of you believe that a top-tier coaching replacement is a phone call away, as long as Billy is still here, and ownership is still tangled in a legal quagmire. These were the very same issues that led several of our ASSISTANT coaches to seek an exit, last summer. Stability is the name of the game. There’s not a legitimate candidate that wouldn’t expect security for himself, his family, and whatever coaching staff he would bring in. How can anyone achieve those conditions as long as a big-a* question mark hangs over both Billy Knight, as well as the ASG (and that doesn’t even touch on a top candidate obviously, and genuinely, lacking faith in the personnel decisions of this complete idiot of a GM)?
I checked the Hawks’ projected cap number, next year, without either Josh signing for what their likely market value will be. If you attach $12 million to Josh Smith, and $6 million to Childress (again, based on Billy’s statement that they intend to re-sign both), then the teams’ cap number is around $67 million. I simply haven’t seen any sign that the ASG is ready, willing, or able, to bump up the team salary, by about $12-13 million, when it neither improves the roster (lacking any draft picks, or additional money for a free agents). So Billy’s statement that they intend to re-sign both, given the financial implications of such a move, and lacking the trade of either Bibby or Johnson, is completely contradictory with the ASG’s track record for financial commitment.
BTW, we, quite expectedly, got smoked by 23 tonight. Shocker.
I’m glad I have a ticket for game 4, because I’m pretty sure a ticket for game 5 will generate nothing but a refund.

Look. The Celtics are a better team than we are. Quite frankly, I’m really only disappointed at our body language / “give up” attitude with a few minutes left to go in the third quarter. That is inexcusable. But a loss to the number one seed on the road? To a team like the Celtics? Very, very forgivable.
I hope we make a better showing next game. At least make it close. If we can return home and steal one game, that’d be great, too. Let’s keep things in perspective, people. The Celtics are one of the better teams the East has seen in years. The Hawks … aren’t one of those teams.
Two simple suggestions, though. First, drive to the basket more. Especially JJ. Get to the line more or at least try and get a few people in foul trouble. Second, you have GOT to give Acie a chance. Salim looked lost playing spot minutes at the point tonight. Acie had a similar stat line to Bibby in 31 minutes less work. I’m just sayin’. I guess you have to “dance with the one that brung ya” with Bibby, and maybe Woodson feels as though benching Bibby for extended minutes will kill the locker room this early in the series … but, still, I mean, c’mon.

In case I didn’t connect the dots, for our large contingent of dim-witted members, that’s a projection of $67 million, for next season, for a team that was 8 games under .500, if we are .
Seriously, am I the only guy (besides Ray) who doesn’t find this “Billy Knight vision” beyond clueless? The ASG WILL NOT pay out $67 million in salaries, next year, no matter what Billy, or any Hawks’ season ticket salesman tells you.
3 more games. Then significant change is a comin’. This isn’t the start of something special. It’s the peak of something unacceptably mediocre.

What a pathetic showing. For all the talk this team did prior to the series, to come out and lay an egg like this is inexcusable. Marvin Williams is becoming a bigger bust day by day and I can only hope we can trade him this offseason. As much as people harp on passing on Paul and Williams, it is becoming even more glaring because we did not even get a quality nba player ahead of them. Say what you want about ihs age, but in the NBA these days you can tell who has the talent and heart to succeed and who doesn’t. Just look at James, Bosh, Anthony, Paul, Williams, Horford, Durant, Wade, Howard, etc. The bottom line is that Marvin will always be a guy who can’t create his own shot while also being unable to hit his jump shot enough to warrant extended playing time. In addition, the guy celebrates a decent play as if he is the best player in the league and rarely, if ever is clutch. Furthermore, reading the interview with Billy Knight angered me to a point that I never have been despite being a hawk fan since I knew what basketball was. The guy tries to be political by saying “Even if you want to say, ‘I told you so,’ you don’t say, ‘I told you so.’ Even if that’s what you’d like to say. You just don’t get into that.” When in reality, he is telling the fans to F off because he is right and this current team is proof of that. Uhh, Sekou, why don’t you ask him about the signing of speedy claxton, the joe johnson at pg experiment, drafting shelden williams, and the list goes on. I distinctly remember an interview after jj’s first few games where BK tried to defend JJ at the point by saying not to talk to him until after the season. Well, after the season, the moron apparently realized he was wrong and proceeded to sign a player that has done nothing to help the team in craig claxton. I am so fed up with this team. I am normally a confident, optimistic person and have tried to defend knight’s picks of marvin and shelden. However, it is becoming increasingly clear to me that this guy will do nothing but continue to run this franchise into the ground. Any person that takes solace in making the playoffs with 37 wins is delusional and far too overconfident in their abilities to run an NBA franchise. I am tired of Atlanta teams being content with making the playoffs. I wish we could go back in time and have David McDavid take over these teams. Finally, as if Mike Woodson couldn’t look any dumber, he was caught smiling on the bench on several occasions tonight, laughed during his interview with Cheryl Miller and blatantly had his championship ring in view as if to show a national audience that he is relevant. Knight hired this fellow moron as well. I hate to sound like this, and I rarely ever voice my opinion in such a negative way. I am just so tired of Atlanta sports fans having to deal with BS franchises like this and GM’s like Waddell and Knight who are completely useless. To make matters worse, Knight acts as if he has accomplished so much in the league and deals with the media and fans as if they are vastly inferior to him. I am sorry that I didn’t blog more about the game itself, but there wasn’t much to say there. The game was just a microcosm of where the franchise is at this point in their rebuilding plan, and hopefully will signal the end of this brutal regime named Billy Knight and Mike Woodson. On the bright side at least we have Al Horford, who is a beast and will be the centerpiece of this franchise for years to come. Unfortunately, he will be attributed to Billy Knight despite the fact that we got lucky as hell to get him without having to give up our pick to Phoenix while also being that hight because of drafting Marvin and Shelden Williams. I still can’t believe Billy Knight acts like this has been the plan all along. Go Hawks.

No need to clarify. My point was addressed to the people who were questioning Woody’s sanity in reaction to his motivational tactics. I would rather he continue to tell his players to chase a title than that this “isn’t the start of something special, it’s the peak of something unacceptably mediocre.” That’s what I refer to conveniently as the HB Ando mentality — I don’t know what is the opposite of a silver lining, but somehow you are able to see it very consistently. I’m not asking you to assume Woody’s perspective — I’m just saying he shouldn’t assume yours. And I think you said pretty much the same thing in your post.
“that’s a projection of $67 million, for next season, for a team that was 8 games under .500”
It’s pretty unfair to suggest that this team next year, with Al Horford having an extra year of experience, with Mike Bibby (hopefully) being healthy and with the same starting lineup from training camp, would still post the exact same record as this year. It’s one thing if you go into a season with the exact same roster as the year before, and everyone on your roster is 35 — then you can expect that your record will be the same or worse. I find it hard to believe that nobody on this team will improve at all and this team will finish next year with the exact same record if they keep the same roster. It’s completely reasonable to think that this roster with an extra year of experience and a constant at point guard from training camp will win 6-7 extra games, if not more. You can argue that’s not a good enough improvement to justify a $67 million payroll, which is fine, and I’d probably agree with you. But to suggest that this exact team won’t top 37 games next year is, well, pretty pessimistic.
“I still find it hard to fathom that some of you believe that a top-tier coaching replacement is a phone call away, as long as Billy is still here, and ownership is still tangled in a legal quagmire.”
Right now we are on the bottom tier. Yeah, a top tier replacement is probably not available. But even a middle tier coach would at least have this team playing Orlando right now instead of Boston.
“Just be clear that firing Woody, as the sole change in the organization, will NOT lead us to a big improvement next year.”
Will firing Billy as the sole change in the organization lead to a big improvement next year? Or will it lead to another 5-year rebuilding project? The same logic you use to say the Hawks can’t attract a top-tier coach can also be applied to the GM position. Where are you gonna find an elite GM who wants to join the ASG mess?
Billy Knight’s done a pretty abysmal job as a GM, but somehow or another he’s assembled a roster that just made the playoffs even though everyone and their momma can see that they lost quite a few games primarily due to being outcoached. To me that means replacing Woody will result in an immediate improvement.
Whatever. At the end of the day arguing who is worse, Billy or Woody, is like arguing whether you would rather live in Sudan or North Korea. I just don’t think Billy is the root of all evil… it’s more of an axis of evil as far as the Hawks are concerned, and if anyone anchors that axis it’s the Atlanta Spirit Group, not Billy or Woody. Until Arthur Blank buys the Hawks, we can all develop carpal tunnel syndrome arguing about who needs to be fired and nothing’s really gonna change.
Sorry for the Ando-sized post.

HB Ando or someone of similar character, I lived in LA for a number of years. I was a Clippers watcher. I saw alot of talented players come through in 1s and 2s and get traded or let go. for years and years. The team never rose high enough or quite fell to the (rock bottom enough?) to put together enough of a core to reach a kind of tipping point where one or two trades would bring success for the long term.
I am worried that the Hawks next year will let the JChill and JSmith leave one way or another. And to me, that will be a foreshadowing of entering the kingdom of Clipperdom. The end of this seasons seems like yet another proverbial critical juncture.
I appreciate you comments about ownership stability. I am assuming that nothing at that level will change between now and next year. I am wondering what the best strategy is to make, assuming we win one or even two playoff games as a best case scenario. What do you think we should do?

All the things many of us thought would happen have happened…in the first game. The Scoop: are u kidding me! Pierce and Garnett could get hurt and Ray Allen would STILL beat this team by himself!
The Hawks play so dumb its not even funny…but whats new? We threw the ball in the post everytime and tried to force our way to the rim (successful about 30% of the time)
Of course a good coach would have a 3 point specialist like a Stokavitch or a Salim to make the other team pay. But instead it seems the one who takes the most 3’s is a power forward Josh Smith.
When he is gonna learn hes not Rasheed Wallace or Okur, and just dosent have the “touch” that great shooters have!
By the way….the only possible way Billy Knight could of been a worse GM is if he had gone back in time and traded Dominique.
Any decent GM would of traded Marvin Williams on draft day YEARS ago while he still had value!!
Now wed be lucky to get some water bottles for him.
Ive always loved Ray Allens game, he was a BEAST with Seattle! I look forward to watching the Celtics in the NBA finals.
I wish my team Houston was 100% healthy, its a shame because i really like how the Rockets are built. And have always been a big Mutombo and Mcgrady fan! Utah is just a tough squad and have one of the best coaches in Jerry Sloan in the history of the NBA.
Yall know who ive always been a big fan of and think would do well here? Jeff Van Gundy! What a great defensive coach.

FIVE THINGS MIKE WOODSON NEEDS TO HEAR:
1- (you Salim fans pay attention too) Salim is awful, the once out of four games that he gets hot, does not make up for the fact that he cannot handle the ball or play defense. I almost pulled my hair out watching him try to dribble up court last night.
2- Solo is clueless…Put him on the bench next to Salim and dont even look at them the rest of the year.
3- Am I the only one who’s noticed that everytime we put the Richardson kid in, all he does is hit shots? He needs to be in the rotation way before the afore mentioned losers.
4-When we need a clutch basket, always work the ball through Horford and stop putting Joe in the clearout. Joe will still probably end up taking the shot which is great..but he gets a better look when the ball starts down low with Horford.
5-Tell Acie to take the ball to the rack. Everytime he does, great things happen. He does it everytime in garbage time, but when he gets his chance with the starters, he gets too conservative and just passes the ball. DO WHAT YOU DO KID!!

i am not sure how “being in the playoffs” is such a good thing if these guys find out they are the star’s of the “not ready for prime time nba” show. it could be so humbling that they never want to go back. unfortunately that is the flip side of the coin. we will find out soon how competitive they want to be. thus far philly they aint as far as being mature and tough. no one can argue that point with any semblance of integrity.

Van Gundy??? He could not win with Tracy McGrady, Yao, and Shane. How in the hell can he get lesser talent to be better defensively? Folks, there is a reason that Carlisle has been fired in two of the prime jobs in the Eastern conference over the past decade. He destroys cohesion where ever he goes. Najeh is quite right on this point. No top line coach is going to take the job with ASG dilemma. Find a good bench coach who is not afraid to delegate away from his weaknesses either on offense or defensive end. Send Solomon, Zaza, and Josh to Hakeem O this summer and pray Bibby gets healthy quick… If I were in the shoes of Acie Law, I certainly would go everywhere Bibby goes this summer. He does not need to go home to Texas. He needs to work on his game.
Oh, just a question, has Marvin Williams guarded anybody yet? Just a point for everyone to watch, Woody said in his post game pressy that he is going to start keep players in through foul trouble from now on (I.E. Josh Smith) http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/PostGame_PressConf.html I’ll believe it when I see it. Regardless of bad calls or not, this is something that should have been done long ago. Well, I think the Hawks can make an appearance worthy of stage if they realize that this is do or die!
And to the silly Sam Cassell is ugly poster. Sure he is, but he gets paid enough every week to make it worth his while… And the true identical twin of “Sam I Can” is “Roger”-the Alien from American Dad http://www.fox.com/americandad/bios/roger.htm Adios

The Celtics are on a mission. The Hawks are on a mission impossible. Billy Knights legacy, Marvin Williams over Chris Paul. Should have listened to Dicky V BABY!!!

Again Guys, BK = LOSER, Woody = LOSER - Until these guys are history the Hawks will NEVER be any good. Too many management mistakes for the team to overcome. I am so glad they chose Marvin Williams over Chris Paul. Everyone knows that you need small forwards more than MVP point guards. Billy you are amazing. 4 20+ point loses and back home where the Hawks belong!
