How’d you like your egg?

INDIANAPOLIS - That’s the question that the Hawks should be asking their fans today.

Because they laid an ugly one here, just about an hour ago, losing a 112-98 stinker to an Indiana team still trailing them by two games in the Eastern Conference standings.

I’d love to dissect all the juicy details here, but there are none.

And perhaps I should have expected as much when I checked into my downtown hotel Tuesday and the guy at the front desk wanted to talk playoffs, standing and what needed to happen for “his” Pacers to unseat the Hawks for that eighth spot (fat chance of that happening in Atlanta).

Despite a near empty arena (and people knock Philips Arena) at the start of the game, it was clear which team showed up prepared, focused and ready to wage a nasty battle for this game - here’s a hint, it wasn’t the Hawks.

Sure, they got up early and looked fired up. But just as the adrenaline was wearing off and the real meat of the game set to begin, things became obvious. The Hawks are in deep waters right now and they’ve only got two floaties (guys with the type of experience needed to handle this kind of pressure).

One of the floaties (Mike Bibby) is currently out of air. So that leaves Joe Johnson as the lone ranger for the Hawks, the only dude on the roster with any serious playoff cred to handle what’s at stake here.

All the Hawks’ fire Tuesday night manifested itself in all the wrong ways (Flagrants, technicals, missed layups, turnovers, etc.). They were clearly the team out of sorts when it mattered most.

And yes, it was as ugly in person as it probably looked on the tube.

A brutal effort all around, and one that deserves all the venom you cats can muster here. So have at it.

i can’t believe that the hawks did not show up for this game, as critical as it was!! i am startin’ to get concerned that we will let indy catch us. instead of focusin’ and playin’ great these next 4 games, they will be lookin’ over their shoulders. ny beat detroit, so you know that they would love nothin’ better than to beat the hawks and keep them out of the playoffs. then we have boston and orlando, sheesh. things are startin’ to look bleak. i was optimistic before tonight’s game, but now…

I’m glad that listened to more than I watched. That game was ugly enough to cost me some hearing. If I had watched all of it I think I’d be blind right now.

To tell the truth, the biggest concern I had with this game was the missed layups and missed open shots. Indiana played a physical game and the refs allowed them to bump shooters driving in the lane. We were missing layups and they were making outside shots.

Josh Smith was playing at an intensity early in the game that was only matched by Indiana. Eventually, JJ and J Childress woke up and matched J Smith’s intensity. However, we were down by too many at that point.

Time to put this game behind us and focus on beating the knicks. Go Hawks.

I KNOW OUR BENCH IS NOT THAT GOOD BUT I THINK U HAVE TO GET THEM IN THE GAME AT LEAST 2 TO 3 MIN TO BUILD SOME KIND OF RTHYM OR CONSISTENCY U ARE GOING TO HAVE TO USE THEM. HAWK PLEASE JUST WIN THESE NEXT FEW GAMES AND WE WONT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS GAME U LOST 2NITE. ON A SIDE NOTE JOE JOHNSON MARRY ME U ARE SO CUTE

That was a very inspiring comeback. Too bad Woodson wouldn’t help his team by sending in some fresh legs to help get them over the top. Bibby is obviously suffering the effects of playing too many accumulative mins. It would’ve been a very effective move to use both Acie and Salim to pressure their PG’s full court. With Chills playing PG, we weren’t as competitive inside. Once Salim entered the gm, Chills went to work inside and we started our comeback.

Salim also forced Indy to ease up on doubling JJ and he was able to score with more ease. It’s unbelievable how Woodson consistently puts his personal agenda with certain players ahead of what’s in the best interest of his team. This franchise is going nowhere if the SAASG can’t see that Woodson has some serious issues as a HC, and it’s having a negative effect on the team and it’s players.

i think clyde is lying low for now. if they are in he congratulates them and drops the bottom line from his posts. if not he gets a huge boost to his brazilian heath fund through his sideline business. even warren buffet is investing in their currency, just dont think it is the currency expenditure clyde has in mind.

Well, so much for getting that 7th or 6th spot. Looks like the Celtics sweep is gonna materialize after all (assuming we actually make it).

It’s one thing to lose, but another thing entirely to look like the damn Knicks… speaking of which, the Hawks better win that game. You can’t be losing to the most dysfunctional franchise in pro sports when you are in a playoff chase.

Bibby the “floatie” looked more like a “floater” today, if you know what I mean. Of course, it doesn’t really “float” when you do it in your girlfriend’s laundry hamper, as I know from experience.

If there’s one other thing this game proved, other than that the Hawks define “inconsistent”, it’s that everyone who thinks Kevin Durant is more valuable to his team than Al Horford needs to check themselves. First six minutes of the game, Horford is in and the Hawks are flying high. As soon as he exits, there goes all the momentum. Sure, this also has to do with Zaza Pachulia’s refined fellating skills, but it doesn’t change the fact that Horford’s presence is incredibly valuable — making his Rookie of the Year candidacy even stronger.

One more thing… G-thang, “parkin tix”? You’d rather pay $10 to park there than $3 to go on Marta? Not to mention, there’s a lot on Luckie Street that supposedly charges $5 but is never attended, so it’s basically free…

I don’t think this is the beginning of the end for this team. I just think they misunderstood what type of energy was needed to deal with a team like the Pacers (one of the NBA’s many, why-aren’t-they-as-good-as-they-look-on-paper teams) in a situation (win or go home) like this. It’s almost as if the team that knows it has another life always fails to land the knockout blow. It happens often in the playoffs. But you’re right, Josh Smith and Joe Johnson seemed like the only two guys who were in the matrix there for a while. And they were both venting to the officials about the rough play and non-calls, as well they should have. It’s going to take six or seven men doing the same to make the playoffs, though. It’s going to take more.

By Mac-Town

I just think the Pacers matched up well against the hawks, and also that they are better than their record (injuries for one thing).

The hawks defense is suspect…and that team has sooo many shooters…everybody was nailing mid range jumpers and threes. Before the game when I thought about all their shooters I was scared of this exact same thing happening.

What I dont get is why is someone for the opposition always open? Why does someone ALWAYS have to to try and help someone else out? Can our players not keep guys in front of them man to man?

Najeh, agreed. I spoke on the Horford effect towards the end of the last blog.

I love how people keep saying how much talent Billy amassed here. It’s true. But explain to me how one rookie comes out of the game and all of the sudden we can’t defend the paint? Uh-huh. YOu know, a team with six better-than-average point guards is a team with a lot of talent too. Get the point?

In the playoffs, there is even more grind-it-out style of play. Things become more physical. You think you’re getting bumped now? Make it to the playoffs, and you’ll get to see how much the refs allow…

Also, this proves exactly what kind of role a head coach plays. Good coaching is often the difference in a tight game, let alone a playoff game. A good coach has developed his bench, for one thing…because they will be absolutely critical at times. Since we already know this is a wash, let’s move on to the next thing. We know we only have two battle-tested veterans. Hell, we’ve only got two veterans PERIOD if you want to get technical. This is where the head coach comes in. Again, it’s a wash. So…we have a useless head coach (who can’t even get us through a tough regular season game), no bench (may as well say it that way), and two veteran players.

…And to think that some people (AHEM…TERRENCE MOORE) have the nerve to talk about beating our opponent in the first round. Pah…

So, is everybody enjoying the ride? You know how it is…you live with the wins and die with the losses. Nobody likes to see the home team choke. On to New York…

we have a mediocre team, mediocre owners, mediocre coach, alot of mediocre fans and the worse gm in nba history! chris paul(pg) is setting the league on fire and that alone should have been enough reason to send bk walking - knowledgeble fans should know that the bibby trade was not a reasonable trade because #1 bibby is not a pg but a sg at best,he’s a sub-par ball handler and an adverage defender. don’t get me wrong because i like bibby’s leadership and his shooting ability but we needed a pg not another sg. woodson is not your typical fundamental systematic hc. it’s not our players fault that they pass the ball poorly, poor ball handlers, poor finishers at the basket, poor decision making:no it’s not the players fault because they are what we thought they were! it’s the gm responsibility to evaluate these kids to make sure that they are are mentally sound(example):1.how well do they pass the ball, 2.how many turnovers in their college career 3.can they systematically finish a lay-up with good body control 4.more importantly are they team players. i can go on and on and on! bottom line, we need change!

Don’t you guys dare let JOE JOHNSON OFF OF THE HOOOK. He was just as flat as mike bibby in the first half. Josh Smith was the only player who came out with any defensive intensity in the first half. What in the H E L L is he getting paid 70mil for? Smoove should get Joe’s next chcek. When you’re the franchise you can’t come out of the gate lacking intensity. Joe should have been the first one geting into his teammates, joe should have been the first on to strike on offense. If any player should have gotten a technical foul it’s Joe Johnson. This has always been my knock on Joe. He is not an IMPACT type of player. He get’s his points in the flow of the game. Hopefully it’s just the HC rubbing off on him but that’s not acceptable behavior for the FACE OF THE FRANCHISE. Kobe sets the tempo, kobe forces the action. You can’t be passive. You should at least take the initiative to rally your teammates, that’s what you sighned on the dotted line for buddy. But it’s proving my theroy thst joe is just a very good piece and not truly something special.

Sure he had 30-something points but it’s when you get them that counts. Grarbage time at the end of the game is not nearly the appropriate time. JJ, marvin, and chiLLs should have scored all of those points when josh did. IN THE FIRST HALF WHEN WE STILL HAD A CHANCE TO TAKE CONTROL OF THE GAME.

In sekou’s article today he quoted Josh Smith from a phone conversation and josh know how important this game was, and he played his hert out. Just like befor the Grizzlies game when marvin said that smoove was like “i’m really gonna take it to this team”. Apparently his teammates never got the message.

I know something was wrong when Horford was so calm in that pre-game intrview. This team always seems to have a mental let down. And look no further than the bench for the answer. Phil Jackson. Yup Because that’s who woodson loked like with his A S S firmly planted on the bench with his team down by 28 points. Get you A S S up and earn your money and get that stupid look off of your face. You shoud’ve gotten that technichal and not Josh Smith. Why the H E L L is he doing your job for you? Way to crap up in front of your friends and family, staring off into space clueless. Woodson was probably too busy visiting with his family when he was supposed to be getting his team ready mentally and going over the game-plan.

After the first five minutes all of the starters execpt for Josh Smith and Al Horford would have been on the bench. You have guys who get paid chump change (Mario, Salim, J-Rich, Solomon) who would gladly go out there and play some defense. Woodsen is such an idiot. although solomon and salim played that was a crappy player rotation.

In the second half salim was the only reason the score was halfway decent and you take him out? And the n you put Chills at the point? what? I understand you wan length for their three point shooters but you’ve gotta look at who’s producing. Why was horford out of the game for so long?

By the time THE REST OF THE TEAM stopped fumbling away passes and actually started being productive in the second half. Smoove was already gassed B/C he scored when it actually counted.

THEN THERE WAS BIBBY. He’s realy starting to p** me off to say the least. Premier pg’s in the leauge find other ways to be productive when their shots aren’t falling. Like driving to the basket maybe? Oh thats right you missed those too. I’m of the poinion that he other guard from Arizona should be starting for this team (literally like three years ago). But i’ll give the guy who just two seasons ago averaged 21ppg the benefit of the doubt FOR NOW. But be warned Bibby. OUR PATIENCE IS RUNNING THIN AND YOU NEED TO GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER.

Based on that performance we do not even deserve to be in the playoffs. Just give pheonix the lottery pick.

During the game is was like “why are these chumps scoring so easily?”

“Why is this guy taking an uncontested jumpshot?”

And that was whne we were up by six in the first quater. Right then I knew the hawks were in for a long night. They did’t bring their A-game today (execpt smoove). Wooodsen even took the day off. No WAF he just sat there with his hands in his lap staring at the pacers cheerleaders.

Bibby is just off right now. He can’t be tired…he’s played less than half the season so far. Josh Smith was the one who looked tired yesterday. that probably had a lot to do with the fact that he was the only one who came out ready to scrap last night. too bad his teamates didn’t give that same effort.

Not playing the bench throughout the year is really catching up. Between J Rich & Salim, there is no excuse for Woodson to not get Joe an extra 5-6 minutes off per game.

By Harry Hawk

April 9, 2008 7:30 AM | Link to this

If the Hawks somehow screw this up and don’t make the playoffs, they wouldn’t even deserve their crappy little lottery pick anyway. The Hawks don’t need any more lottery picks now. They need two truly solid veteran players (preferably two frontcourt guys) added to this roster. Oh, they also need a head coach who doesn’t wait until the end of the season to try to find some kind of depth off his bench. I don’t think Salim Stoudamire knows whether to show up in warmups or a three-piece suit. It’s an absolute joke the way Woodson has handled the bench. I don’t care how good or bad those players are. Get them in there and figure out a way for them to be effective. That’s your job, dammit.

Okay, can we fire Woody now?

I’ve watched this same game 25 times this season — and every time the Hawks implode in the third quarter.

I’m telling you, the biggest judge of coaching ability is how your team plays in the third quarter. That’s when a good coach makes the adjustments necessary based on how their team, and the other team, are playing that night.

I don’t have the statistics, but I’d love it if someone could look it up — and I’ll bet you that the Hawks have the worst +/- differential in the entire NBA for the third quarter.

I’m not saying Woody’s a bad guy — far from it, he seems to be a truly nice guy, and in a different situation he may be a great coach.

But not here, and not now — not with this team.

On talent alone we should be a .500 club. Maybe not a contender, but solidly in the playoffs in a weak bottom of the Eastern conference. We shouldn’t have to struggle like we are over the last week of the season just to get into the post season.

So …

Can we fire Woody now?

Later,

Don!

Playoffs or no playoffs, Woody has to go. this team has no discipline on defense and if the birds want to get to the elite level (they are 100 levels below that now), they need a coach who will not only tolerate this c**p but will kick some butt to get results. I would accept losing a close game but being blown out like that in a game that winning meant wrapping up a playoff spot (with one more NJ loss or Hawks win), I cant stand to watch. And if they do get in, Boston will not only win in 4, but they will win big in every game.

The problem with the Hawks is that the entire defensive philosphy is based on the other team missing the shot. Not because the Hawks defense did anything to affect or alter the opponent’s shot, mind you, rather to just hope and pray that the other guy throws up a brick. The Pacers shot 61% in the first half for pete’s sake. To say that the Hawks play defense is really an insult to the notion of actually playing defense.

If…and that’s a BIG if…the Hawks do stumble into the playoffs, the Celtics will kill them. Absolutely kill them, because they have zero interest in stopping the other team from scoring.

When I was kid, my dad and I used to play this card game. It was called battle. It was pretty simple really. If you laid down a card, the other person laid down a card and whoever had the high number, took both cards, well, if the cards had the same face value, there’d be a battle. You’d lay down five cards and turn the last one over. Whoever had the highest fifth card took all ten. It went on like that until one person was completely out of cards. Here’s the point, it was always toughest to take the last card. It was always a joker or an ace or a ten, something hard to take, and a few times that old man was down to his last card and he came all the way back and beat me. My point is the Hawks were trying to take another team’s last card, in their stadium, in front of their fans. What happened was what was probably going to happen. Does that excuse the Hawks for the way they played last night, not hardl. A playoff hardened team would have put the Pacers on ice last night, bottomline. Does it mean that the Hawks are going to choke and miss the playoffs, not necessarily. It just means that it’s hard to take a team’s last card, that’s all.

SEKOU SMITH:

I’ve see it with the Wizards. Here’s Atlanta. This is a walkover. Let’s cruise. Then the Hawks hand the Lizards their hats and they slither out the door.

When they turn up the heat and play bully-ball they carry the Lakers to overtime on L.A.’s floor. Then of course, L.A.’s thinking - oh, its the Lizards. This is a walk-over. Lakers just lucky they were at home. It takes seven or eight guys all doing the same.

Exactly right Mr. Blogmeister. They will learn. You can’t just show up and win. It does take time, however to build ‘tude and chemistry amongst playa’s. Hawks are on the rise.

I think it’s a distict possiblity the Hawks miss. Indy has a cupcake schedule for the next four games (@ Philly, Charlotte,@Washington, and the Knicks). We are @ NY, Boston, Orlando, and Miami. After watching this team yesterday, there is nothing that would make me believe beating the Knicks (who will want to play spoiler) is a sure thing. Relying on Boston to rest their starters gives me no relief. Orlando? They’ll have revenge on their minds from their lost to us the other day. Miami is the only game I think we will win with no problem. Honestly, I can see Indy going 4-0. They have the fire power to match up with Philly’s uptempo style. The Bobcats are playing for anything. Washington? Depends on which team shows up. They may be the only team that will put up a true fight because they are playing for their seed. Knicks? That’s a win for Indy.

SalimFan,

What are you talking about? Joe had 11pts and 4 ast in the first half. What do you want from him? The fact that he went on to drop 19 in the second half without assist says one of two things- either he knew he had to step it up even more by taking more shots or nobody else was hittin shots to give him anymore dimes. He shot 54% from the floor. He played a very solid game- he just had no help, excluding Smoov.

A huge problem was, as I’ve been saying previously, the liability that Bibby is on defense. Flip Murray absolutely abused the dude. It all goes to the guard penetration that we allow by Bibby’s lack of ability to deny. I’m not saying Bibby’s not worth “the trouble” when he’s “on”, but something has to be done to address this. As stated by someone else it is critical for him to find ways to contribute, even when his shot is not falling.

I didn’t expect us to go undefeated the rest of the way, so I’m not worried- we will still…

I certainly hope the Hawk players don’t give up as quickly and as easily as some of you so called fans. Part of our recent problems have to do with adjustments by the opposition. Woodson’s OFF is not designed to attack the basket. We spend a lot of the 24sec clock setting picks to free players to receive entry passes. As a result, we end up starting our OFF above the key or far away from the basket on the wing. Teams now realize that if they pressure the passer and overplay the person receiving the pass, they will disrupt our OFF.

With all of the movement and screens, we still end up going one on one or taking a contested jumpshot. Woodson doesn’t seem to comprehend that adjustments to his OFF, and player fatigue, are the major causes of our recent OFF/DEF problems. Woodson hasn’t made one single attempt to counter these adjustments because he, like some of you, blames the players. It’s always been considered standard procedure to counter overplaying DEF’s by using back cuts, or attack the basket and forcing the DEF to collapse. Bibby actually did that often last night, but he had trouble finishing.

If a DEF overplays, you spread the OFF, but Woodson continues to call for pick and rolls with JJ. This places 2 defenders near the ball and makes it easier to double him. Spreading the floor creates more DEF spacing, makes it more difficult to double, while making it easier to penetrate and dish for uncontested shots.

I GUESS AS LONG AS A HC CAN BLAME THE PLAYERS, OFFICIATING, AND/OR THE GM FOR NOT GIVING HIM WHAT HE WANTS, IT BECOMES THIER RESPONSIBITY TO MAKE THE APPROPRIATE CHANGES AND/OR ADJUSTMENTS, NOT HIS. ISN’T THAT RIGHT COACH WOODSON?

Marquis Daniels looked like he belonged in the women’s national championship last night. A man with hair weeves? The most feminine thing I’ve seen since Mike Miller with his hello kitty hairbands. As far as the Hawks go, I’d give you some sparkling in game analysis, but I’m too busy losing my lunch. Trap game. Hawks fell in the trap. Is AC law hurt? Or did Woodson’s hatred of Law override his all consuming hatred of Salim? And Ray, since you are in law enforcement, which government agency do we contact about Solo being starved to death? Defax? I’m not sure if his parents are doing it or not. Can we hook him up with Eddie Curry’s chef? Sekou, tell the Hawks we don’t like eating f**king eggs.

The Hawks may very well bounce back, but let’s be honest going against the Celtics they Hawks will be lucky to keep the margin losses under twenty. The team that finishes ninth in the West would have homecourt advantage in the first round if they were playing in the East. That is how bad the NBA Eastern Conference is right now. The Hawks will probably make the playoffs in a very weak conference only to be destroyed in the first round against the Celtics.

THIS IS THE VERY REASON WHY COACH WOODSON SHOULD LOOSE HIS JOB. IT’S ALWAYS THE COACHES FAULT WHEN HIS TEAM DOESN’T SHOW UP. AFTER THE WIN OVER THE SIXERS, I HEARD HE WAS ACTING AS IF THE TEAM HAD ALREADY MADE THE PLAYOFFS. NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS FROM THIS POINT FORWARD, GET RID OF THIS CLOWN!!!!!!!

Look at it this way: the two times the Hawks had a chance to beat a team they should’ve beaten (NJ and Indy) they lost. The Hawks are a team that plays down to their competition, and I think the reality smack last night will motivate them to beat NY on Friday.

No way Indy beats Washington at the phone booth, and all Atlanta has to do is win Friday and beat Miami and they are set.

I’m talking about Joe’s defensive intensity in the first half. He got toasted plenty of times just like marvin. Thats unacceptable when you are supposed to be the face of the franchise.

And like I said, if this was kobe if he saw his team struggling IN THE FIRST HALF HE WOULD’VE TOOK ON THE OFFENSIVE DUTIES AND KEPT HIS TEAM IN THE GAME. HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE TECHNICAL FOUL, NOT JOSH SMITH. jOE WAS JUST AS OUT OF IT IN THE FIRST HALF AS MARVIN AND BIBBY……ESPICALLY BIBBY.

Josh had to contest all of the penetrators b/c marvin and joe kept getting beat in the first half. On both ends ofthe court. like you said joe only vhad 11 pts in the first half. Josh had 20-something. Unacceptable for joe. He’s not a leader like I previously stated. Somone like KOBE WOULD HAVE REALIZED THE SITUATION EARLY AND GOT THE BALL ROLLING. Joe did nothing but get some garbage points at the end of the game.

Hey guys! I have to agree with the Sacramento Kings fan who told us about a month ago that Mike Bibby was not a consistant player anymore. This Kings fan said that for the last two years he has seen Bibbly constantly have “one” good game and then have one or two bad games afterwards. Well, he was right because I am definitely seeing this trend out of Mike Bibby. He is not worth 14 million. He is hot one night and cold the next. This is not the type of point guard we need.

Although Josh Smith played with intensity last night, he still has to realized that he is not a shooter. I saw Josh Smith take two long jumpers while Salim was on the floor with him. I don’t know what makes Josh Smith think he should take those shots. The two 3 pointers he made in the Toronto game are not shots he makes on a regular basis. Josh Smith needs to stay within his game on the offensive end.

Somebody please answer my comments and tell me what if you agree or disagree.

Get real, SalimFan and all you other idiots who think Smoove “brought it” yesterday. All he brought was his usual dumba$$ reckless game. He made that great dunk and then sat on his a$$ savoring the moment instead of getting back on D. The Hawks go on a run and he decides to take over as PG and turned the ball over. He went for the block and got off his feet instead of playing smart man-D and got burned at least 5-6 times. How stupid can one player be? That boy’s IQ is worse than Forrest Gump’s.

Intensity don’t mean $hit without focus, and Smith (boy ain’t Smoove) has NO focus.

We trailed by as many as 29 points, but JJ still played 44 minutes? When the starters are struggling, shouldnt you utilize the bench to see if they can provide a spark? Maybe Richardson can hit a few shots, maybe AC can penetrate and dish. Surely they couldnt do any worse than the starters, who were getting blown out…

@SalimFan-From what I can tell, the only consistent play is coming from JJ and everyone else is a hit or miss depending on the night. That’s why he received player of the month and player of the week. Give credit where credit is due. All this talk about intensity is getting on my nerves. Intensity is nothing without execution and that’s the real problem.

i have been sittin’ here thinkin’. i don’t think that the hawks deserve to go to the playoffs, remember the sonics game, wizards game, when they were 0-11, the 1st bucks game, the 1st chicago game, when they were really strugglin’and the 2 losses to charlotte. of the 44 losses that we have 22 of them have been by dbl digists. this is crazy. how can over half of your losses been blowouts and you call yourself playoff bound? this team lacks consistency. we don’t deserve to go and i know that they ain’t gonna play like they want to go either.

I was very very disappointed in last nights lose. I actually said that they would have a good chance of making the playoffs, if they split the last four games (Philly twice, Toronto and Indiana) which they did. But they didn’t come out with the killer intinct last night and that bothers me. Indiana was the more desperate team and they played like it. I still believe the Hawks have a good chance to make the Playoffs because the rest of the teams they are playing have really nothing to play for. Boston is resting the Big 3, Orlando already cliched the division, and NY and Miami are tanking for balls. Looks like if the Hawks win 3 their in, regardless.

BA, ha ha! Good post, man! Yeah, it would be DFACS that we contact for ol’ Solo. Since he’s over the age limit now, perhaps I can submit a waiver form on his behalf, LOL!

Not to pick on Ken at all…. But the majority of his post is exactly why so many fans are “giving up.” In fact, I’ll key on one word: adjustments. When games get tough, you have to make adjustments. When the other team makes adjustments you must also make adjustments. Woody has shown us that either cannot make adjustments, or cannot make the correct adjustments at the right time. So….when you know that your head coach is not capable, how are you supposed to feel about tough games? All you can do is hope that the right players have the right chemistry and do all the right things at all the right times…without guidance. Yeah….somebody want to sell me ocean front property in Arizona? (as the country song goes…)

I’m not giving up on this team. But recognize things for what they are: We are neither “in” the playoffs, nor “out” as it stands right now. There are games left to be played, and the 8th seed is still undecided.

However, I would be very interested in how people perceive things if we don’t make it. There is something to be said for looking ahead…and by the way…firing Woody at this point is pointless. May as well fire him after the season is over. Nobody else has been head coach of the team this season, so they likely wouldn’t make enough of a difference for the last few games. Why? Because the bench has already been decimated through lack of playing time, for one thing. Even letting Larry Drew take the reins isn’t a guarantee of enough changes to help us make the playoffs. Nor would it guarantee a single win in the playoffs if we make them.

Mark my words. This offseason is an ample opportunity for the ASG to come forth with a “new” campaign. They’ve already spread their propaganda though various channels (AHEM…Terrence Moore). They’ve already set the table. They want to make money. They’re going to have to at least make it LOOK like they’re offering a new and different product. We shall see if this is so, or just more Fool’s Gold (copyright-HB Ando)

I was not shocked this team got beat last night. Mike Knapp is so beyond terrible that I cant even think of a new word to describe this guy. I was thinking the other day about how that Kings fan was right. Ive noticed that Bibby will have a great shooting game then come out and cant hit anything. I just dont see how you get down 29 points and dont put some shooters in and try to get the team some type of spark or energy. The only thing Mike Knapp is good at is folding his arms and frowning. This team can make the playoffs but they better hope that Indina loses at least two of their games but hell the Pacers have a easy schedule. Steve Smith or somebody needs to pull these guys to the side and reinforce to them how important these games are because I doubt they listen to anything Mike Knapp says

I seriously doubt that you’re telling the truth though. Any sensible observer can see what josh means to this team and the fact that his strengths outwiegh his weaknesses.

Sure, you’re right about everone elso om the team being hit or miss besides joe on OFFENSE, but DEFENSE is where the hawks have lost the madjority of their games this season. If everyone on the team brought their a game just like smoove every night the hawks wouldn’t have an issue taking care of the pacers.

With all of josh’s “turnovers” we still manage to average a solid 100ppg so I really don’t see tham as being that much of a problem.

I have been a Falcons fan my whole life, but if they don’t draft a lineman, either offensive or defensive, I will seriously consider switching to a different team. I’m not joking. We have drafted I think 2 first-round offensive linemen in the last 18 years (Lincoln Kennedy and Bob Whitfield if I’m not mistaken), and every year we wonder why our running game is inconsistent, our QBs get sacked all the time, Keith Brooking wears down as the season goes along, our run defense gets worse with every game… all problems directly attributable to bad line play on both sides of the ball. Meanwhile teams like the Patriots spend all kinds of first day picks on linemen and end up in the playoffs every year. If Jake Long ain’t available Dimitroff either needs to take Glenn Dorsey, or he should trade down to take Sedrick Ellis or Ryan Clady.

Woody is a terrible coach but I can’t put all of last night’s game on him. We knew the scouting report on Bibby when he came: offense comes from his J, defense doesn’t come at all - no J, no game. Marv and Chil are both mediocre defenders, although Marv should be good. Al was having trouble working against Indy. Zaza sucks. We have a flawed roster and a weak bench. Woody should be playing the bench differently and playing the starters more effectively but there is only so much he can do. I’d like to switch out our wing men for a couple perimeter defenders who can catch and shoot, snag a big defensive combo guard to back up Joe and Bibby, and grab a big lug for when Josh or Al come out.

Joe Johnson is the man and if it wasn’t for him we would have started talking about next season a long time ago and if his shot is flat it’s probably because he’s fighting double teams all of the time and he has to defend the best player. I don’t know, fellas, If they do that I will be sick to my stomach. Don’t Do It - Tommy! Don’t Do It! It’s a trap!

Take OL/LONG JAKE if not available? Take DL/DORSEY GLENN if not available?
We might have to take a hard look at the RB-from Arkansas? AAAH! What’s his name? If not those three? Me might have to take a look at MATT RYAN - But I don’t like that option….Geez! I would hate to be a GM! Darned if you do & Darned if you don’t!

See Najeh

If the Big-Tuna is already negotiating with Jake Long for that first pick?

When the whole world knows they need a QB? What does that say?

Yep - Your’e right, you must build a team from the lines FIRST

So, why take a hit or miss QB? That is the hardest position to transition into from College to Pro. That’s why you need three (or is it four?) years of college to enter the draft!

We took a famous QB at #1 and look where we are today! It’s hard to be a QB so much pressure, Being taken 1st is pressure enough & then to perform too? I can’t gamble on a QB if I’m in the Falcons front office.

I trust Dimitroff will do the right thing! But Jake Long is a Can’t miss! I don’t trust that RB either, McFadden is I believe his name?

Get a Line player, I hope the #2 team takes Matt Ryan to take him off our table!

Oh Yeah! Hawks - Give us something to talk about on here!

I was looking at the owners and they did not look too happy in the first half. I think Woody might be gone after this season. He has failed to develop the bench. The hawks should have a good bench with AC at PG JR at SG JC at SF SJ at PF ZP at center The gaurds can stretch the defense because they can shot long range. Solo bring some shot blocking to the team while JC can work the baseline. This game just show that Woody needed to get a 3pt shooter to help stretch the defense. We have two shooters on the bench and he has not used them.

The Hawks need a win and Indy a lost baby. The Hawks need to win at least two more because Indy will lose one more game.

This summer the hawks need to work on the bench. AC needs to work out in the weight room to get stronger. He and Salmin both need to work on the 3 pts shot. JR, Solo, and Zaza all need to hit the weight room hard. They all need to add 20 pounds of muscles. These guy are the most ready to help guys on the bench. They just need to get stronger.

Mario needs to work on a jumper over the summer.

RAY-points well made and well taken.

The Falcons will draft either DT’s Dorsey or Ellis, not QB Ryan. Remember, Ryan played at Boston College, and our GM is from New England(Boston). So he’s seen Ryan as much as anyone in the NFL. He likely saw him throw most of those 19 INT’s and who knows how many near INT’s. BBrohm is the QB the Falcons covert most, and he’s the most accurate passer in the draft. And while completing more passes than Ryan, his INT’s over the last 2yrs are fewer than Ryan’s 2007 total. Brohm is a bigger more athletic version of Ken ” The Snake” Stabler. Drafting him would also make spending a high draft pick on a premier LT much less of a priority, since he’s left handed. It would bring TWeiner back into the picture, as least for the short term. Brohm will likely be availabe in the top of the 2nd rd, or the bottom of the 1st.

DT Dorsey(1st rd) and QB Brohm(2nd rd) would be a much better 1/2 draft combination than Ryan and whatever OT/DT available to us in the 2nd rd.

Infamouskrs, if you were a Hawks player, you’d be checking out the PaceMates too. Anything is more constructive than listening to Woody babble incoherently and draw stick figures on his little marker board in the huddle. In fact, if you haven’t noticed…this happens damn near every time. Every time there’s a timeout or something, no more than 1 or 2 players is actually LOOKING at Woody or whatever the hell he’s drawing….

drmaryb, well now that’s an interesting way to have an egg. However, I think it would give me uncontrollable gas.If you ever hear anything about a natural gas explosion down in the southeastern section of Georgia, you’ll know it was me trying one of your eggs….

When Smoove got teed up in the Pacer game, Woodson blew a golden opportunty. If he had stormed onto the court, and pulled the old Bobby Cox, I think the Hawks not only win that game, but they go into the playoffs, for better or worse, behind Woody. They would have run that JJ iso play to perfection. ZaZa would have flopped even HARDER, even Salim’s suit would have looked better. But the man has lost his team. Josh Smith showed him up in front of God and everybody there (had to be something like FORTY people in that building). Then he returned to the bench triumphantly, receiving full support from Solomon Jones. Doesn’t sound like something that would happen on the Spurs bench, or Detroit’s.

Is it possible that Woodson’s been a patsy all along? Billy Knight, knowing he was going to strip this club down to nothing, hired Woodson knowing he would eventually pull the Pat Riley? The Don Waddell? I hope not, because just like Larry Drew, it’s too close to Woodson. Call me crazy, but remember at the all-star break, when Sekou wrote about the first practice with Bibby? Billy Knight on the floor? In a way it would serve him right, having to utilize this backward inside out group of power forwards!

Well, I’m just gonna worry about right now. Once we make the playoffs FINALLY I’ll be happy and we can worry about all the other stuff then.

Soooo, Do you guys think Boston and Orlando will be resting players since their spots are already locked up? If so, I’ll feel a lot better about our playoff chances and getting wins against 1 or both of them.

we have as many wimpy bloggers here as the hawks have as basketball players. all this wishing that someone isnt playing well or not playing their best players really says a lot for the expectations but better yet the lack of confidence. arent we backing into this enough by not having a winning record? isnt that enough of a gift to worry about who is resting whom and who is playing their best basketball or not? i say win it against the best and you have confidence going in; back in and you are out as easy as you got in. ever see the guy who play golf and cheats his way around the course for good scores then when folks are watching somehow has a bad day every time? that is what not winning it fair and against the best does for you weakens the will to win and makes one weaker.

the hawks and asg have to take care of their business. because the hawks did not take care of their business by draftin’ a pt. guard 2 yrs ago, we have suffered in futility. because the hawks did not handle their business against less inferior teams, we are fightin’ for our playoff lives, in futility. i hope that they pull it out.

Today In The News

OKay, okay. So I had to do it again…

I don’t know what’s worse: the fact that there’s a poll asking whether or not we think the current roster can develop into a national championship…or the fact that over 270 people said Yes.

Blog Crimes Unit officers have unearthed yet ANOTHER conspiracy. All the important questions franchise owners/leaders should be asking themselves have somehow developed into poll questions. It appears that this is how the ASG is making franchise decisions. Blog Crimes Unit technicians bugged a particular golf resort/country club and were able to record the following:

*”Hey Mike, I was just thinking…should we sign Josh Smith or just trade him?”

“Hell, I don’t know Bruce. Who knows how much money the kid really wants? How much is he worth to us? I know…Why don’t we make it a poll question on the AJC website under the Hawks section?”

“Yeah, that’s an idea I suppose… I’m concerned about Speedy too. I mean, all that money, and dude even says he’s going to try and play next year. But evertime he hits the floor, something happens. Do you think we should trade him or try and buy him out or something?”

“Uhhhh…I don’t know, Bruce. Why don’t we make it another poll question for the following week?”

“I hear ya, I hear ya. Man, I’m thinking we have to make some changes. We lose so much. Such tough questions. Should we keep Knight and Woodson? Can we really build a championship contender out of the current team roster? Should we go ahead and sacrifice one of our young forwards in an attempt to get a center? Do we keep Mike Bibby? How much money will he want? Can we afford him? Does he even want to stay? How do we keep JJ happy? What if he doesn’t want to stay ‘cause we lose so much, then what do we do…trade him? It’s all so confusing..”

“For cryin’ out loud, Bruce! Can you NOT see that I’m working on my putting game here? Stop bothering me with all these damn questions! I do NOT have the answers! The questions you SHOULD be asking yourself is how do we promote and get more ticket sales, and what will it take to finally get rid of Steve? Have Terrence, Mark, Jeff, or somebody put up a freakin’ poll for each of those silly questions you have. It’ll entertain those simple-minded fans and maybe even give one of those simpletons something to write about, although we usually have to tell them what to write. I mean, those three guys are supposed to be sports writers? Geez Bruce, do I have to think of everything around here?! Besides, taking polls is the easiest way to get answers without actually having to THINK about them, plus nobody really gets the blame for making the decision. It’s pure genius, I tell ya. You see…not only do you dodge the blame this way, you can tell those rat-b******* fans that they got what they asked for when they voted on the polls! Now leave me alone…I’m trying to get this putt down..”

Hmmmmm. Sound downright dastardly. We’ll report more as we come across it. That’s all for now…

G-thang, wasn’t it just a couple of days ago you said we are gonna win out, Washington’s gonna go 1-4, Toronto’s gonna go 1-4, and we’ll get the 6th seed, or something like that? One loss now completely changes your outlook? New York hasn’t been motivated since Patrick Ewing played for them. I don’t rule out the Hawks losing to anyone, but I would feel pretty comfortable betting on the Hawks to beat an Eddy Curry-less Knicks team. David Lee and Jamal Crawford are the only players on that team who even sometimes care about winning.

The Hawks aren’t lacking the motivation or the will to win their remaining gms. The core of this team is simply lacking in mental and physical energy because Woodson has run them into the ground playing them overextended mins. Bibby seems to have hit a wall and his legs and overall judgement are gone. Woodson is playing Chills out of position, at PG, which limits his overall effectiveness. Marvin has upped his gm, but Woodson always goes to one on one or pick and roll with JJ in the 2nd half. That seems to take Marvin out of the OFF loop. Horford is starting to show the effects of playing too many mins, and his OFF and rebounding are suffering.

For personal reason’s, Woodson is refusing to even play Acie or Richardson, and is reluctant to play Salim consistent mins. the Indy was poorly officiated. Our players were so exhausted after their comeback, they started concentrating on, and arguing with the officials and just gave up from exhaustion. Woodson gave them no relief or direction. And don’t forget, FRUSTRATION can rob a player, and a team, of their emotional energy quicker than anything. Just look at how frustrating we become as fans, just watching Woodson’s gm to gm ineptitude. Imagine how the players feel, and must be affected, having to experience it first hand, live and in person. How often has JJ announced he needs some help. Don’t you think he feels that way when teams are doubling him, especially when Bibby’s off his gm, and Woodson teams him with Chills rather than scoring threats, with fresh legs, like Salim and/or Richardson or even Acie and/or West?

I believe they will eventually overcome their fatigue, lack of coaching and weak OFF system to get into the playoffs. I have nothing but pride and respect for these young and relatively inexperienced players.

Ken, you’ve hit it on the head: practice doesn’t make perfect. Instead, practice makes permanent. When faced with a situation, people do not often rise to the occasion. Rather, they are reduced to their level of training. There are exceptions, of course.

Bottom Line: Woodson has created this monster by draining the starters and subverting the bench. What foolishness. And nobody can tell me it’s because they’re all so young. Take one look at the Portland Trailblazers. The entire team is young, but the bench is highly effective.

Najeh, I wouldn’t look past New York. They have been playing a bit better lately, and they nearly beat us last time. David Lee outhustles us on the regular, Jamal Crawford and Nate Robinson get hot easily (and are difficult to deal with), and then there’s key guys off the bench. Renaldo Balkman and Wilson Chandler weren’t easy to deal with last time either. I’m not saying the game isn’t winnable, I’m just saying that they’re talented and play hard enough to not be ignored or run over. I’m sure our guys will be very motivated. Here’s to hoping they got enough rest and won’t get entirely mismanaged by you know who…

As for words from the team (players, coaches, etc.) they can say it and someone else can type it.

Over the last 4-5yrs, this franchise has exhibited an awful lot of arrogance from top to bottom. The SAASG has demonstrated an almost total disdane for its fan base, and little concern for its team. They threw both under the bus when they blocked BK’s attempts to fire our disfunctional HC.

Our GM hasn’t endeared himself to that same fan base. With 4gms remaining in the season, our disfunctional HC is still trying to prove to himself, and everyone else, he’s the HC. In his attempts to do so, his efforts are eroding the confidence and abilities of our young players rather than developing, enhancing and/or utilizing them. A new HC might have recognize and corrected Woodson’s faulty approach and corrected them. That alone would have benefitted the players and the team.

Let’s hope our young Hawks can rise to the occasion and bury the Knicks tonight.

BA, there’s no telling where that guy is…

As for those who say that Portland is going right back to lottery land…how about finish the sentence? They’re going back to lottery land with a .500 record. So yes, they’re still better than we are, despite the fact that we have two veteran guys of star level talent. And they get to go back to the lottery.

Be glad we’re not part of the western conference. You think we deserve to go to the playoffs and have done well? The 8th seed in the west has a 48-31 record, which means they are playing better than .600 ball. How’s THAT for perspective?

Gotta love how Woody says he won’t yank his starters tonight if they get into foul trouble. Really? You did last game. Then he says that everybody has to contribute, bench and all. Ha. You’ve relegated almost anybody not named Childress to cheerleader status. Give ‘em a skimpy outfit and a pair of pom-poms, that’s about all the contribution you’ve ALLOWED, you dope-faced moron! I suppose they should be glad you allow them to wear their jerseys, huh?

What worries me about the Knicks is not that they have a lot of talent. We can beat those guys. But a handful of them play with such fire. If we come out flat, they will flat beat us down. Can’t come out flat. We have to fight the whole game. Guys like Robinson and Crawford will attack you for the full 48 minutes, so no let-downs. And if you don’t put a body on guys like David Lee and Renaldo Balkman, they’ll get 30 or more rebounds between them.

Wish I could see this one. Perhaps I’ll record it.

Back from ny sojourn to west Texas. I get the feeling Woodson is a control freak. Saw a lot of that on my last trip out west too.

doc My playoff strip is in the cheap seats (303), but I did commit to 108 for next season. If by odd chance we get on a playoff run, i.e. get past the 1st round, I’ll gladly sell the 303s and move down.

drmaryb no offense, but it looks like they spend much more time playing football than marketing via the web. Me thinks a few college aged sports interns with basic web skills could do a lot. Mainly use them to keep info current and do things like type blogs for the league’s stars. Check out all the blogs that the WNBA has.

To paraphrase what I tell lots of folks for business, fans for the IWFL are nice, but what you really want are fans for the Atlanta Xplosion!

The Atlanta Dream actually drop specials via their sparsely populated blog. This could be a good idea to get some buzz going. Maybe even a IWFL spot in second life.

Hope your ladies knock some mouse heads around on Saturday.

…and there is a new blog where it is quite appropriate for doc to send out a DING!
