March Madness (NBA style)!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
NEW YORK - You had your vacation (and I had mine, thanks to the hard work of Mr. D. Orlando Ledbetter).
Hope you enjoyed it (I know I did). Because you’re stuck with me the rest of the way.
Starting right here and right now with these Hawks and Knicks here at the Garden, we’re going to ride this thing out.
It’s March Madness NBA style. Every game for these Hawks comes with the same win-or-go-home directive that should accompany any team on the postseason bubble.
And I can admit to knowing very little about the University of Georgia’s basketball program, but I can’t say they haven’t spiked my interest in the past 72 hours.
If nothing else, you have to believe in the impossible right now. No one figured those cats for the NCAA’s this time a week ago, and now they’re preparing to try out their dancing shoes.
(Hey, I know it’s a stretch, but a few days off energized my belief in the power of positive thinking).
I’m trying to be a kinder and gentler me down the stretch so no one can say I did anything to get in the way of the progress the Hawks are trying to make, however painful it might be to watch sometimes.
Fine. Give me a day or two to get my edge back. Who knows, this Dr. Feel Good thing might stick (or not)? But I figured it’s worth a try now, since every negative angle on things has already been exhausted (the last blog was as vicious as it was long).

Good games so far by JJ, Josh Smith, and Childress. Law really can get into the paint anytime he wants to. I would like to see the kid be a little more agressive when he is in the game.

CP, I agree. If bad heel Bibby can get there, you know that Acie can. Besides, we’ve seen it before. How about Woodson calling that timeout when they had 1 second left on the shotclock, and it wasn’t even the end of the quarter or half? As if he could actually come up with a useable gameplan. Sheesh…
We better not give this game away, that’s what I know. Because they have the dumbest coach (and GM)outside of Mike Woodson, their talent only hurts us in spots (and when Horford’s on the bench).
It was good to see Solo get some burn, but why does he only get burn when we’re playing teams that are bigger than us? As usual, he got pushed around when dealing with guys like Morris and Randolph. Speaking of Morris, I hear that Cybil…I mean Isaiah Thomas…wants to get him out of there. I’d take him. He’s got some game.
Zaza’s getting eaten up out there too. For only one reason, though: he just can’t seem to understand the concept of denying your opponent the position he wants. One clue for ya Zaza: if the guy you’re defending is inside the small half-circle in the paint…it’s already over. Hacking does nothing for you now besides giving him the And 1.
What is with the turnovers? And the constant lay-up drill…

Marvin is in jump-shooter heaven right now. The one time he tried to go to the basket, he gets punked by…Wilson Chandler? Back to shooting the jumper…and doing that rather well. C’mon Marvin, we love that jumper, but if Rip Hamilton narrow a$$ can get to the basket reliably, so can you.

Every game the Hawks play feels like the scoring margin should be at least 5 or 6 points more in the Hawks’ favor. This game is no exception. The Hawks have had plenty of chances to put away the Knicks only to let them back in with some stupid defensive lapse. You can’t play like that on the road, not even against garbage teams like the Knicks. Overall the Hawks have played much better, and it’s their own fault with their mental lapses that the score doesn’t reflect that. Good performances from Joe, Marvin and Josh Smith today though.

Those 3 guys are playing well tonight Najeh. I just feel bad for Salim….he finally got some playing time when Acie was hurt, and he played fairly well. But what does Woodson do when Acie comes back……relegates Salim to the bench again…..and for what? When we had Tlue and AJ, Woodson found ways to rotate all three guys (Tlue, AJ, and Acie), so why can’t he do the same with Bibby, Acie and Salim? Salim will probaly find his groove with another team anyway after the season….I hope Woodson does too.

Yeah I agree, Salim earned himself at least a handful of minutes with his performance when Acie Law was out. With Bibby’s injury situation you would think Woodson would limit his minutes to about 20-25 and split the rest between Acie (who is still working his way back from injury himself) and Salim. But that would be asking Woody to do something intelligent, which he has proven to be incapable of doing.

When Marvin’s jump shot is falling he has games like this but when its not he is basically standing there looking clueless. This summer the only thing Marvin should be focusing on is driving to the basket. Great game by DUCK. JJ is looking great lately and Chill was big off the bench. Nice to see Josh Smith get into it with the coach again. The kid really has to keep his emotions in check. Solo needs to go to as many all you can eat places once the season is over and get some weight. Pachulia needs to focus on his defense and he needs to do it A.S.A.P. Nice to get a win on the road. If we can beat New Jersey and Chicago in the remaing games we have against them I think we can make the playoffs. It is all about handling business from now on.

If the Hawks are going to make the play-offs, then we need this type of effort from Marvin every game. Marvin is the X factor right now. If he can score 20 a night other teams will not be able to double down on JJ.
Marvin scoring can do other things for the hawks as well be opening up the floor for the Joshes to do the dirty work around the boards. I think we know what Chill will bring to the table; however, if Smith can get 15 pts, 10 boards, and 2 blks, the hawks will be a force the rest of the season.
I hope Bibby can get 90 - 95% well because we are going to need him to hit some jumpers later in the season.
Finally, what does Slamin has to do to get playing time on the team? A few weeks ago, he was winning games for you and this week, he can make it off the bench. Now people wonder why we say Woodson can not coach?

WHERE’S MY BOY DecDawg AT???
Let’s review some of his “JJ sux” comments in light of tonight’s game, shall we?
Tonight, JJ was assigned to guard the leading perimeter player on the Knicks - Jamal Crawford, who came into today averaging 21ppg.
DecDawg said about JJ: he NEVER shuts anyone down defensively. His guy usually scores as many points as he does.
Tonight, JJ scored 28, which is about his average during the past 3 weeks - and he also dished out 11 assists. Jamal Crawford scored 4, which is 17 less than his average. He only scored one field goal.
I’m sorry, I said I was done with that boy but I couldn’t resist. I think he made JJ mad - and I’m not complaining!

terrell barron, the problem with JJ is that he plays well against bad teams more often than he does against good teams. He needs to show up every game for the rest of the season! A road win is great for this team, but the Knicks are horrible, so hopefuly they can play better against the better teams.

Yea hawksfanfordawin right after that lazy pass from Josh that rolled off of Law’s foot you could see in the huddle Woodson barking at Josh and could see Josh with the sour face. I think Childress came in between them and was firing the guys up basically letting them know we had a game to win and to kill all that silly noise. If you noticed Josh did not come back in the game after that play. Im glad somebody got in the middle and stopped all the confusion. I guess Woodson did not want to see that kind of lazy effort although we were winning and I cant blame him for that. I mean it could be nothing but frustration on both parts. Josh was mad because we were leaving the lane open and just gave a lazy pass inbounds. Woodson was mad because he has seen us blow games like this and did not like that kind of effort. Josh just has to keep his cool..Nothing major but I was kind of p** at that lazy pass too. We need to string together a good 5 or 6 game winning streak.

Chills is practically a vet! Its Bibby or JJ, then the experiance(age) is about the same. I think Chills is one of the best all around players on this team. He averages about 15 or so points without any plays being called for him. He MAKES thing happen on both ends of the court!

Hey guys! Great win by the Hawks, even if it was the Knicks. Great effort by the bench and JJ is taking over when the team needs him most. You can see how it is rubbing off on the younger guys and they are taking advantage of a favorable schedule.
Josh Smith needs to play with better consistency. His defense is on point, but there are times when he completely plays out of rhythm.
There’s still 16 games to go and the Hawks need to continue riding this momentum into DC tomorrow!
Looking forward to going to the game, anyone else going? Sekou hope to see you there. Ciao ;)

First of all, great win hawks. This was an exciting game to watch.
The *Good: * 4 different players blocked shots. Double double by JJ and staying aggressive on both the offensive and defensive end. Nice block shot. I like the fact that 5 different players took 3pt shots.
Nice 3rd quarter shooting for Marvin Williams as he joined JJ and Jchil in scoring over 20 points for the game. We scored more than 20 points in every quarter and even had 2 quarters with more than 30 points. I liked that we took more than 80 shots.
Nice team defense as far as rotations and taking charges. Josh Smith drew 2 offensive charges against Jefferies.
Nice coaching by woodson. He gave Solomon Jones some playing time and didn’t pull him when he made some mistakes. Nice job on pulling Josh Smith out of the game when he and AC Law didn’t connect on an inbound pass. Not upset with the fact that they messed up the inbound play, but that Josh was arguing with Woodson about the play.
The camera work didn’t even show whose fault it was, but Josh Smith has got to maintain his composure and realize that he gets the majority of minutes in a game. Therefore, he has got to make AC Law and other bench players better when they come into the game.
The *Bad: * Too many minutes for JJ. I can live with Marvin playing more than 40 minutes because he was hot and needed to stay in the game. Plus, he doesn’t have that many 40 minute nights.
The hawks gave up too many offensive rebounds. Would have liked to have seen more steals. Only 3 players had steals.
Both Bibby and Horford had poor offensive games as far as scoring goes. These two players need to consistently score in double figures. However, each did contribute in other areas.
On a side note, I liked the way that Randolph Morris played for a person who has received little to no playing time before Eddie Curry went down. He was aggressive on the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Had nice footwork on the offensive end and looked like he has offensive skills. On defensive, he rotated over and challenged hawks players who were going to the basket.
Isaiah did a poor job of coaching tonight, however, he did an excellent Job of stealing this player away from the hawks who needed a big man in the worse way and the cost was minimal.

Salim hurt his ankle again and has not dressed the past two games. The hawks only have 12 active players and therefore, we don’t need to place someone on the inactive list each game. Speedy is out 13th player and of course he is out with the knee problem.

Mike Woodson still sucks. Ask UGA about how to win games with equal, or less, talent…
Its great having owners who consider a 30% winning percentage successful. The Rankin Smith family has been reincarnated into the Atlanta Spirit. They don’t even strive for mediocrity, barely showing up is enough to keep your job.
Congrats, though, Gearons and Levenson! The idiocy you have shown is helping to detract attention from your more incompetent employees.

People, please, there are two reasons Salim gets no minutes (excepting tonight, due to injury). One, Mike Knapp doesn’t like him. Two, he SUCKS! Too short, can’t handle the ball, no defense. Also, Solomon SUCKS. I personally volunteer to buy him as many whoppers as he will eat. Great game for Chills, though- guess that stupid shoes article really got him pumped up. You could only see something that stupid in this communist rag of a paper. Hey, AJC, a little effort would be nice. We are loaded with real players, but as you said, the coach(ing staff) is inept. I could be wrong (Lord knows, it happens all the time!) but the guy is too short and doesn’t have the speed to defend other point guards in this league. Our bench isn’t deep enough for somebody to sub in and just chuck a couple of threes. Did you notice the starters all sat on the END of the bench, far away from Woodson?! I don’t think they’ve given up, I think the Hawks players have decided to create thier own makeshift “offense” independent of Woodson. I’m proud of Joe. He is straight ballin’. And I hate to see Smoove lose his cool that way, he’s better than that.

yes we have some players but their not used. BUT you cannot say with a straight face that you would rather Josh smith take a shot over salim studamire. If you’ve watched him when he’s actually gotten time he’s been very productive and very solid defense.
It’s not jacking up a shot if you’re WIDE OPEN. Thas called a high percentage shot. Unlike bibby, salim makes sure he’s open before he lets it fly (probably b/c of his short leash)
And too short? For what? Did you forget that he’s 6’1? Allen iverson is shorter and plays less defense. When Gregg popovith puts Damon stuodamire in with tony parker. 5’11 damon becomes the SG b/c he’s the better shooter.
How about rick adleman in houston. OFTEN have three guards under 6’3 in the game. Luther head, Rafer Alston, and Bobby Jackson or Aaron Brooks.
Acie hasn’t even proven anything yet.

Playoffs!?! How about 32 wins?
Agreed. JJ has picked it up over the last week or so and he is to be commended.
But we need JJ to play like an All-star every night; not just against the scrubs of the league.
A win is a win is a win and Lord knows we need wins. But lost, in the hysteria of the playoffs, is the truly sobering fact that - the Hawks may not surpass last year’s win total.
We were foolish to fall for the false prophet, Mike Bibby, and his one-legged sermon? He wont be resurrecting any playoffs around here this year.

Interesting matchups for this game. It’s going to be a real challenge for JJ to score big tonite. Stevenson and Butler will take turns defending him. Both are very good defenders. I hope he doesn’t settle for too many jumpshots. Jamison should matchup well with JSmoove. Horford will have his hands full with Haywood. Hawks may have the advantage with Bibby at the point. If he has success breakdown the defense by driving and dishing than we could steal a win in DC tonite…

If Smith can get some offense going and some BLKs on Jamison, the Hawks win big. Jaimson is caring this team on his back.

So just curious… Is anybody starting to believe what I wrote about Bibby awhile back in one of your other blogs? Remember, I’m the guy from Sacramento who’s been a fan of, and following Bibby for roughly 8 years now.
Here’s a brief recap of the points I touched on with Bibby…
1) NO ‘D’…. EVER!!!!! 2) Most INCONSITENT shooter on any team. 3) NOT VOCAL AT ALL 4) The dude is hurt nearly 75% of every season he plays, but he’ll still play all 80+ games. (injury is not an excuse for him) 5) Too SLOW
yeah, I think those are just a few of the things i touched on. Meanwhile, us here in Sacramento couldn’t be happier watching our new PG grow and evolve into what a PG is supposed to be. Thank GOD that the Hawks took him, otherwise we might have been stuck with his contract until it ran out and would have to had to start our “rebuilding” then, as opposed to now.
Good news is that you guys only have him until the end of next year.
Let’s just hope that everyone doesn’t forget how frustrated they are RIGHT NOW with the way he’s playing, when he comes through with another one of his “consistently” sporadic decent games. And yes I did intend to use an oxymoron there… trust me, it best suited what I was trying to say.

MELVIN:
Yes, but wirey. Can be moved off the block both offensively and defensively. He’s developing into a fine player though. Still really young.
Songaila cannot match up with Horford, but Darius is smart, tough, and an excellent passer. He’s gaining traction at #4, and is beginnig to help rather than hurt the team there. Loved him at Wake Forest. Got to see him twice when they played Richmond home and away (once a year - alternating) for four years. Good luck Hawks fans. Gotta’ root for my Wizards tonight.

Andray Blatche, from what I have seen, is really, really underrated. I don’t think the Hawks have anyone his size other than Zaza, who plays like a 4 foot tall 11 year old girl. With the Hawks’ size issues I don’t think it’s a good thing that he gets more minutes. What the Hawks need to do to win this game is clamp down on the perimeter scoring and make them bang in the post to get their points. Butler and Jamison are both better away from the basket than posting up, from what I have seen of them. That’s gonna mean Bibby has to step up and keep his man out of the lane, and the defense has to rotate quickly to the shooter if they come double Caron Butler or Antawn Jamison.

I love Blatche game, he knows his limitations also. But he isn’t that strong, but he can get up and down the court, guard 3-5 also. Game rides on Deshawn(sp), he plays great d, and we can’t let him be the 3rd scoring option tonight

Hey Chikara
What’s up girl. Big game tonight should be a barn burner,,,Glad you will be there to cheer on the Hawks.
The Wizards are my second favorite team. I love Gilbert, the Hawks passed on him for - God Knows Who? That was the first premier PG we passed on the Second being CP3 and I am just sick about taking Marvin over CP3 (an unforgiveable sin).
Hey, Chikara - Hips Don’t Lie! ;0 Have fun tonight and be careful!

SAC-town:
BK passed on Bibby last year for the reasons you mention: doesnt defend and too short.
This year, dont think he could pass, move made more outta desperation than anything else.
In long term, Bibby can be useful, especially if his heel heals.
But without defense, we’re not going very far, unless they get a beast like Artest.

Two words, one name:
“Chris Alexander” of Sioux Falls.
He is a solid body and interior presence +7ft +260pds which could contribute with 15min of hustle and about 5pts, 5reb and 1,5blks which would come in handy in our fight for the playoffs.

I know we’re only up by 1 at the half, but we look pretty good tonight, offensively and defensively. The bench is even playing well. They ‘re just hitting from behind the arc. You cant do much about that, but hope and pray that they miss.

Hello mary. Missed you last few. Tight game. Pretty evenly balanced teams. I’ve been trying to be more thsn a fan so I could spot some strengths and weaknesses. But you almost had to have played the game on a fairly high level, or have been a coach to really analyze well. Looks like Haywood’s injury was partly hype. He’s played most of the first half. And the Hawks defended the inside early frustrating Wizards offense and game plan. Later, Hawks have been countered somewhat by the Wizards and Horford and Smith seem to be neutralized at this point. ZaZa seems to be more an observer that a player. He needs to mix it up inside more. At least, it seems that way to me. Half-time.
Word on Arenas. Gil had another MRI today and has been cleared for action. He’s allowed full contact practice now. So the team’s really being cautious. Ando surmised that with an opt out at stake, Gilbert might not want to return this year. That is not Gil’s nature however. Evidently, he’s thirsting to return ASAP and has little regard for anything other than today, and the next game this year. That may not be the smartest move. but its pure Gilbert. Second half started. Later girl Be safe.

That was a HUGE win, especially since it was on the road.
Al Horford with the double double and 6 assists thrown in. Meanwhile, Joakim Noah has 2 points and 0 boards at halftime of their game.

Congratulations Hawks fans. This loss will haunt the Wizards before this season is over. Bibby and Childress made some important shots when it counted. Everyone on the floor but Williams and Petrulia really played about the way I saw them last time against the Wizards. Not much to say other than that.

Great win. Looks like Bibby brought his A game. I also see that his stalker is still roaming here. Al Horford is a beast and has gotten better since the Bibby trade. Clyde I still dont see how you could say you did not want this kid. He is lightyears ahead of Noah and Williams. Nice production from the bench. When Law learns to finish better at the rim this kid is going to be very good. My only complaint is that we might need to get some stick um in here and do it A.S.A.P. I dont think I have ever seen a team fumble away so many balls night after night. Guys seem to have hands like Mike Jenkins. Good gameplan by Mike Knapp. Damn I cant believe I just said that. If we can handle our business against the Nets I think we can make the playoffs.

If our bench can play the way they’ve played in the last 2 games, we’ll be in good shape, if not, its going to be difficult. Acie, Zaza, and Chills were huge the last 2 games. I cant beleive I said Zaza, but I did.

Hey RichBrave
Hawks Win Hawks Win Hawks Win
Can you say 10-Game Win Streak - and back to .500 just in time for the - PLAYOFFS? (o.k. i know - calm down) All three of my brothers played Basketball, (one played professionally for 8 years in Italy.)
I Love This Game! I love the nuances and garbage plays that make a difference, but don’t necc. show up show up in the stats! I like role players a lot. Looks like Atlanta is starting to figure out roles.
Is it me? Or is Woody coaching better? Looks like Marvin lost PT to Chills based on the box-score. I feel Chills should start and let Marvin be the microwave coming off the bench. (Marvin is one-dimensional) He, my friend is not a starter. Chills can do it all - play the base-line and step out to hit that three!!
I am still at work so I heard the game on NBA League Pass, but I will watch tonight whenever I can get home.
I can’t believe we won. I think we finally turned the corner with Bibby.
I know Gilbert A. is a work horse he would never sand-bag if he could play he would. I saw some footage on him re-habbing a while back and he was wearing out his trainer. The trainer was crying UNCLE.
Go Hawks! Whooopppeee!

The Hawks need to get to that 6-spot to avoid two teams Detroit and Boston in Round 1. That is the only way we make it to the 2nd round to MAKE SOME NOISE in these playoffs. Hey if the BULLDOG NATION can do it - WHY NOT US?

Joe wasn’t explosive tonight but he hit tons of KEY shots when we needed them.

JJ’s shot wasn’t falling for him tonight like it has been normally, but DAMN - 10 assists and 0 turnovers. Folks, that is downright impressive. He knew his teammates were hot tonight, and he got them the ball. This man wants us in the playoffs.
During a lot of games recently, JJ seemed to be the only Hawk who hadn’t given up. He brought his game up to another level, and I think his play might finally be starting to rub off on the other Hawks. If the Hawks do sneak into the playoffs, they’ll be able to thank JJ for doing what Mike Woodson couldn’t - get this team to play up to its potential.

richbrave that’s what he said.
and g-thang: we would probably get swept by boston, just like everyone except detroit or cleveland. we might be able to take one from detroit, but they have soooo much more postseason experience than we do.
orlando on the other hand i really think we could beat in seven or maybe less. we’ve split two road games with them so far, went 3-1 last year, and seem to match up with them well. jsmith would really pull out all the stops against his old AAU teammate dwight howard. maybe the hawks can claw their way into sixth place somehow…

Woody actually coached a pretty good game tonight. He’s been horrible this year, but we need to cut him some slack until he starts doing dumb s** again. Give him his 1 day in the sun, Matt. The rotation was good, that play, after the timeout, worked for a change, he seems to be letting Bibby run the offense, he’s cutting Acie some slack, and not pulling him as soon as makes a rookie mistake. Hey, maybe he’s turned the corner and realizes that that Bobby Knight crap does’nt work in the NBA. Actually, he really does’nt have much of a choice, but to change, considering his job is on the line. But we’ll see. But for today, lets leave him alone.

The hawks may be a dark horse to make the playoffs but you can rest assured that the hawks have the three major ingredients it takes to make the playoffs. First of all, the hawks have all the horses to make it happen. J-Smooth, J-Chill, A. Horford, Joe Johnson, Salim Stoudemire, Mike Bibby and others. Secondly, the hawks are in a weak conferences (eastern conference) there EVERYONE makes the playoffs except for the doormats. The hawks are not a doormat since they have beaten the elite teams of the leage. Third, the hawks are playing with a passion unlike anything I have ever seen. They have the drive, determination, passion and sense of urgency to get the job done, plus the fact that they are in a conference where as long as your record is respectable, you manage to squeak into the plaoffs. Take all of this into account then when you realize the Hawks have one of the greatest coaches in the game today (Mike Woodsen) and a general manager (Billy Knight) who is known for creating dynasties, its just a matter of time until the Hawks find their place on the throne of basketball alongside the games elite teams. The hawks are destinys stepchild this year and I am looking for great things from them in the playoffs!!
