Lost in space
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
NOTE OF APOLOGY FROM BLOG-Z: This post should have been filed early Wednesday morning but your trusted scribe had his day interrupted by an early morning flight, a Josh Childress sighting at the Charlotte airport (no trade, dude has a sore knee and was sent back to Atlanta to get it checked out), more blockbuster trade news (J-Kidd to Dallas for a group of players) and then a lunch meeting with the boys at Mert’s, one of the finest soul food spots in the Queen City. Next time you’re here, check it out. The beef tips and rice, mac and cheese and collard greens were off the charts and now back to our regularly scheduled program.
CHARLOTTE - If you’ve gotten that Groundhog Day feeling about this Hawks season you can join the rest of us in the “Why do we keep doing this?” support group now.
Because last night’s 94-90 loss to the Pistons solidified things for me in that regard. The Hawks, as Dennis Green famously said, are who we thought they were (or however the phrase goes).
And the Hawks let the Pistons off the hook last night. They let ‘em off the hook. Because the one thing the mighty Pistons aren’t fabulous at (and there aren’t many items on that list) is transition basketball. Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess and the rest of their frontcourt rotation isn’t built for an up-tempo game.
But the Hawks couldn’t (continue) to take advantage of that after they ran their way back into the game in the third quarter. To some it’s become almost too painful to watch, the Hawks abandoning what works best in favor for whatever the opposition dictates late in games.
The scramble for answers after yet another deflating loss has spread throughout the hall of Blog-Z’s house. Some of my main men (good to see you at the game last night fellas) strolled down courtside at the end of the game to share their pain. And all you can do is nod your head in agreement and acknowledge that you’ve seen the exact same things they have.
That end of game visit led me to a quest for answer of my own. I had to seek out someone with a different perspective to help shed some light on things for me. So I staked out the corridors of Philips Arena long after the game was over and cornered an Eastern Conference scout I’ve known, and respected, for years.
We talked Pistons and Hawks, comparing the team that knew exactly how to win that game last night (the Pistons) and the team that had no clue how to win the game last night (the Hawks).
“Depth, balance and Mr. Big shot,” he told me, “that’s the difference between winning these games and losing these games. Detroit’s depth is so good that they can rest their big guns for nice stretches, whether they’re playing well or not, and know that they are going to be fresh in the fourth quarter. The minute he made that first, contested, 3-pointer, I knew it was over. He’s an assassin in the last three minutes of a close game.”
BLOG-Z: I hear you, but what are the Hawks missing that doesn’t allow them to win these kinds of games? Because there are tons of teams that don’t have a point guard the caliber of Billups.
MY GUY:“You have to understand, what they’ve done in Detroit is beyond comprehension. To be able to build a team that has a first and second unit that complement each other that well nowadays Joe Dumars is the best in the business, bar none. People can continue their love affair with guys like Brian Colangelo and some of these other hot shot GMs. But what have any of those guys won? For my money, what Dumars has done here and what the guys in San Antonio have done, it just doesn’t get any better. Look at Detroit’s second unit. Rodney Stuckey is a young monster. He’s like a younger version of Chauncey. Aaron Afflalo has been better than anyone expected. Jason Maxiell and Amir Johnson are fantastic young talents. And the beauty of it all is that they’re nasty guys. They play with an edge, a swagger and a physical style that they could only have learned from those first line guys in a championship organization.
BZ: You don’t see that same nastiness in the Hawks young cats?
MG: Not in all of them. Josh Smith and Al Horford have. I don’t know that these other young guys are cut from that same mold. Josh Smith is a beast. And if he was on a team like Detroit, he’d be flat out ridiculous. Because as good as he is, he’s never played with the kind of veterans that could teach him the tricks of the trade and provide him with the kind of insights and examples to take full advantage of the physical gifts he’s already tapped into. Horford’s a young beast as well. He’s by far the best rookie in the league. It’s not even a good debate. He held his own out there tonight, and dominated the action in spurts. Against two of the best and most skilled and experienced bigs in Rasheed [Wallace] and [Antonio] McDyess. The best thing that happened for the Pistons is the Hawks going away from pushing the ball and featuring those kids in the fourth quarter. But believe me when I tell you, there isn’t a team in the league that wouldn’t want either one of those young kids right now. They’re the cornerstones there, they have to be.
BZ: You don’t sound as in love with the Hawks’ core as some other people I’ve talked to, who think that this group has to be kept intact?
MG: We’ve talked about this before, man. Josh, Horford and Joe Johnson are keepers. That’s your core. Everybody else well, I can see you moving just about anybody else on that roster to get what you need to get better. That’s just the way good teams do business.
BZ: So you’re still high on Joe Johnson? A lot of people are down on him because his production is on a steady decline but he looks dog tired to me.
MG: [Four letter word I can’t write without getting a pink-slip] right I’m still high on him. He’s struggling because the Hawks have riding him like a pack mule. Nobody can play 40-plus minutes like this year after year. He looks like he’s running on empty to me. It’s a valiant effort, but he’s beat up pretty bad. That should be obvious to anybody that’s watching. But who’s his back up? Where’s his help? They can’t stretch the floor at all, so teams are able to squeeze him out of his preferred spots on the floor and force him into the areas where he doesn’t have the room to make plays. Get him some rest, and a little help, and he’ll be fine.
BZ: What’s the most glaring spot, in need of help, in your eyes?
MG: If you just watch the game last night and take that as a sample, they just don’t have enough quality shooters on the floor at any one time to really put any pressure on you defensively. When Smith and Horford are rebounding and doing what they do, that puts pressure on you. And if Joe is making shots, that’s an extra wrinkle that can cause you some concern. But they don’t have enough good shooters to beat you in a half court game. So you keep them from running and play possession for possession and you should generally be able to match up with them and from there, it’s anybody’s game. But there’s no doubt a shooter is the most glaring need. They probably need a guy that space the floor and then a big man who can face up and play the pick-and-pop game, too.
BZ: Most people around here (Atlanta) would scream about a point guard and a big man. Are they missing something that you see?
MG: Everybody in the league that doesn’t have a marquee point guard could use one. And yeah, the easy answer is the Hawks should have drafted Chris Paul instead of Marvin Williams, Brandon Roy instead of Shelden Williams and the top of the Eastern Conference would be Boston, Detroit, Atlanta and then everybody else. There’s no doubt about that. But that’s not what happened. Acie Law is going to be fine in time. But they have to bring him along better than they have. He looks lost out there. And when you look at him and then look at Stuckey, it’s clear that one guy is playing with a certain confidence and swagger and the other guy is not. That’s about development more than it is anything else. Stuckey has the luxury of playing behind and learning from one of the best in the league in Billups. So there’s really no pressure on him. I don’t think Acie has that luxury. I also don’t think he’s allowed the same freedoms. It makes a difference. Trust me, it makes a huge difference.
BZ: Cool, last question. Do you think the Hawks make the playoffs or not?
MG: I just don’t see it happening right now, not without some serious tweaks. They’ve got too much dead weight on the end of that bench to make a significant move [in the standings]. They’ve got guys that don’t give them anything. And they’re not good enough to play seven or eight guys every night and keep up the pace. They’ve already fallen all the way back to the pack. So now every night is either a step forward or a step backward. Philly, Chicago and Indy are lurking. And I think Chicago and Indy are better teams, when all things are equal, so that could be a huge problem. Without help, I have hard time seeing this team all of sudden change its stripes and start doing things they haven’t previously done. It’s a nice dream to hang on to, but you could get lost in space waiting on that to happen in real life. If you don’t pull the trigger on something, a trade or something, you’ll just continue to sink. Because these guys are playing at their max most nights and it’s still not good enough.
None of this helps the Hawks tonight against the Bobcats in a game that, based on the past three games and the schedule ahead, shapes up as perhaps the most crucial of the season for the cats from Hawksville. But I thought it was worth sharing for those of you who might be interested in an outsider’s take on these things.

Sounds like Sekou’s guy actually has intelligence on the situation of the Hawks….he would be useful here on the dark side.
It’s a shame about Childress, I see JJ joining him on the sidelines when he wears out due to inept coaching and Woodson’s desire to depend on him like Pookie on crack.
Yet I still remain solid in my thinking that Atlanta DOES NOT NEED ANOTHER SHOOTER. What they need is a coach who can take advantage of the roster’s talents.
I can promise you that if you gave Rick Adelman, Don Nelson, Eddie Jordan or Mike D’antoni this exact same roster Atlanta currently has would be approaching 30 wins by now.
They would be able to utilize Salim and Acie properly into their lineup and not feel like they have to go only 7 deep, nor would they kill poor JJ to the point where he’s out of commission by March 1st.
I think Sekou and others are hurting more by the fact that they know nothing will change in Atlanta and they have to watch in agony. They will have to wait two more months as the Woodson era mercifully comes to an end.
“They probably need a guy that space the floor and then a big man who can face up and play the pick-and-pop game, too.”
Sure, it’s a shame these people can’t figure out which guys the Hawks can obtain. Why don’t we come out and say that Atlanta needs Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli, and Tony Parker while we’re at it?
Gee, what analysis.

This “My Guy” character is absolutely, completely, 100% right.
“We’ve talked about this before, man. Josh, Horford and Joe Johnson are keepers. That’s your core. Everybody else … well, I can see you moving just about anybody else on that roster to get what you need to get better.”
I don’t even think anything else needs to be said, other than… why is this guy not the Hawks’ GM instead of Billy Knight?

richbrave your constant complaints about the Wizards run empty on this blog. I watch the Wizards all the time on CSN (not to mention having to bear the God-forsaking play calling of Steve Buckhantz DAGGER!) and the only thing they need to do is get Caron and Antonio back healthy. I think they will beat the Clippers tonight.
Just wait until Gilbert comes back on March 2nd. When that happens we will see Washington run roughshod on the East come playoff time.
You, DarkRyder, and JohnGTfan (by the way, let’s talk tickets for the 17th John) will have a lot to say then.

What the Wizards need you won’t dispose of-Josh Smith. And they can’t afford to give up Areanas, Butler or Jamison to get him.
What else we got to give for him? Nick Young is going to be special, but another rook. Dominic McGuire - a rebounding fool. Again a rook. Pecherov? A 7 foot rookie outside shooter averaging less than .325? No. Brenden Haywood - our only sortof legitimate center? No. The list goes on throughout the entire roster. As much as I would like to see Smith, or Horford in a Wizards uniform it’s not gonna’ happen. We’ve got some of the same problems you do. We’ve traded an NBA All-Star team trying to get better - “Rip” Hamilton, Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, Chris Webber. Don’t fret about your Hawks. They’ve got the right stuff-and they know it. Maintain. Keep picking the right talant. Woodson did o.k. in Detroit. Maybe he’ll pull things out here. Joe Dumars vs. Billy Knight. Got to go with Sekou Smith. No comparison. Of course few do compare. Just my take.
Don’t panic and trade the future All-Stars for any quick fixes. How long has BK been GM?? Is he responsible for any players other than Sheldon Williams.

Lurker, new poster. Sekou, great work daily my man. I’m going to sound repetitive and echo the same sentiments of many posters. Mike Woodson does not seem to know how to play to the strengths of our team. Also, I think try to “do the Phoenix” and play 7 guys in some crazy backcourt/run hybrid isn’t going to work. We don’t have the pieces. Its interesting the comment about Acie. I just think Mike hinders development. Some guys flat out have it from jump(Big Al), but others need coaching up. So, yeah, I’m on the Fire Woodson bandwagon.

To be honest with you guys, I believe the Hawks will begin to slide out of play-off contention if they lose tonight. They will be only one game in front of New Jersey for the 7th spot and 3 games in front of Indiana and Chicago for the 8th spot with 33 games remaining after the all-star break. Then they will have to play five games on the road against the West (i.e., the Lakers, Sacramento, Golden State, Utah and San Antonio). The Hawks might get lucky and win “one” game. Since Woody does’nt know how to use all his players, and since the Hawks won’t be able to make any good trades before February 23, the Hawks will end up with a record only better than the following teams: Memphis, Clippers, Minnesota, Seattle, Miami, Charlotte (maybe), Milwaukee (maybe), and New York (maybe). Consequently, fellow Hawks fans, we could end up with the fifth worst record in the NBA. With the way this team has been coached, this can definitely happen. We might as well look forward to drafting Roy Hibbert (from Georgetown College) and finding a good combo guard, like Brandon Roy, in the draft. Please tell me what you think fellows.

Dark Ryder I agree the Hawks don’t need just another shooter, but what I disagree with you on is that they do need to change the roster. The Hawks presently have guys that are very good players in quarters 1-3 but disappear when the bright lights of the 4th begins to shine on them.
Like I said I don’t think ATL needs just another shooter; they need a killer. They need someone who wakes up in the morning and dreams about making that shot that ruins the opposing city’s night. I don’t know if Mike Miller is that guy, but I know Marvin isn’t right now. A high pressure shooter might also help us improve our abysmal road performance(6-16 this season). So unless Chauncey, Kobe or Hibachi become available, BK needs to try to get Miller and he needs to do it before the end of the All Star break when the Birds spend far to much time out west.

here’s to a quick recovery to CHILS. and to add, as much as i was on JS on his lack of handles, shot selections, and decision makin’ at the beginnin’ of the year, i’m NOW on CHILS to show up with a freakin’ decent jump shot next year (if he is still a HAWK). despite all that he does bring, just that glarin’ omission in his game allows defenses not to have to worry about another one our players to present an outside threat!!!
so just as JS made incredible strides in his game since the start of the season, CHILS needs to arrive next year with a decent shot that can challenge defenses or at least make them play him honestly!!
we’ve got to have the team with the less shooters in the entire NBA!!!!!

Eric— You made way too much sense — until that comment about drafting a great player in 2008. Any sorry Hawks fan knows that the only team that might get that guy is Phoenix — compliments of the Hawks. But thanks for stopping by. Just out of curiosity, would you be up for a gig as Hawks’ GM or coach? The Hawks’ management team definitely could use an IQ boost.

Eric, In the trade for Joe we gave up Boris Diaw and two conditional first rounders. I don’t remember all of the details on one of the picks — it was something like from the Clippers via Boston and conditionally protected (but I think we gave up this pick already in ‘06). But the other pick was lottery protected in ‘06 and top three protected in ‘07 which is why ATL hitting the miracle ping pong ball in last year’s lottery was HUGE. If we didn’t move up to three, we would’ve lost the 4th pick and lower to PHX. So it’s a friggin’ miracle that we got Horford - one of the first breaks this franchise has gotten in YEARS, and a break that many of us here felt may change this sorry franchise’s fortunes —- obviously we were wrong.

LOL…oops, Eric, I forgot the point of the post - The pick is not protected this year so PHX gets it no matter what. I do believe we have a 2nd round pick that would be easy enough to find out online. So the only we get a pick this year is via a trade and that looks stunningly unlikely. But if we do miraculously pull off a trade it better not be for picks but for proven players.

I said it in the last blog, and I’ll say it again here.
The Hawks will make a change before (or at) the trading deadline. If it’s not personnel, it will be between Billy and Woody.
This team has enough talent at its core to win. However, we either need a missing piece on the floor, or a different presence leading them.
Mike Miller would be a good start, but then again … so would Larry Brown. I sincerely hope we get a shooter, a big man, or a new coach — or we’ll be stuck in the same place we were last season. And that’s not good.
Later,
Don!
P.S. Sekou, how much do you figure the Spirit’s inability to sign Josh this last offseason has cost the Hawks this offseason? Not just in dollars, but in league circles as well.

I second it about Acie- Are you kidding me- the kid has been on fire- Steve Smith and the announcers last 3 minutes left in the game announce him player of the game then Woody takes him out in favor of A.J. AJ of course misses both of his shots terribly. What a way to develop your young point guard-
Kid has a career high 13 points and never sees the floor again for the last 3 minutes.
NO suprise with 6.8 seconds left we are down two and have probably blown one to Charlotte-
F**K the Spirit. Bring in Belkin- This is horrible

How in the hell is Acie not in this game in OT- What is the logic about this? When a guy is hot and having a good game take him out and not play him anymore? This guy is a freaking moron man-
When he had the line up in T-Lue, Law, And J. Johnson it opened the court up.
This should be a blow out for the hawks
Sekou- Has there ever been a team trade a coach before the deadline? I really think if we could trade Woodson I really think it would help out. I know we would probably have to trade him to the developmental league and pick up his salary-
It’s not the player’s on this team- This coach doesn’t know how to play the right players and use the right match ups.

Going to Joe Johnson at the end of the game isn’t the problem. Going to him without giving him any help, with none of the other 4 players moving, with nobody setting a screen for him… well that’s dumb even if you are coaching a high school team. If you are doing that in the NBA game after game and each time it results in failure, well, that’s about as good a reason to fire the coach as any.

well you can turn off the oven this team is done.
is there a coach that might say it is a higher percentage shot joe to bank it off the rim instead of floating it towards the basket and seeing it hit the front rim for the umpteenth time.
can anyone say shooter that is reliable in bk’s ear. utah made the obvious move several weeks ago why hasnt the BASG insisted what is obvious to the blog regulars and trusted scout?
no energy in the second half by the first teamers and no ops for the second teamers leaving the tank empty at the end.

WOW I would say unbelieveable but we’ve seen this plenty of times before. Big lead blown, Joe Johson missing the last shot. This game is not his fault, but I think he is a lot like Scottie Pippen. Very good player, but will never be good enough to be “the man” on any team.

I THINK WOODSON IS CONTROLLED BY THE MOB- I THINK VEGAS HAS THEIR HOOKS IN THIS GUY OR HE IS THE MOST RETARDED COACH IN BASKETBALL. EITHER ONE IS POSSIBLE. HOW IN THE HELL DID ACIE LAW NEVER REENTER THE GAME???? THE ANNOUNCERS HAD HIM AS PLAYER OF THE GAME- HE NEVER PLAYS THE NEXT 8 MINUTES???
THERE’S SOMETHING SHADY WITH THIS COACH AND BILLY KNIGHT-
HELL- IT WAS BILLY KNIGHT WHO HELPED BUILD THE DYNASTY IN DETROIT BY SENDING RASHEED TO HIS BUDDY WOODSON WHEN HE WAS AN ASSISTANT AT DETROIT- NO ONE BRINGS IT UP ABOUT HIM TRADING IT TO OUR OWN CONFERENCE. HOW MANY TIMES HAS DETROIT KICKED OUR A* BECAUSE OF RASHEED NOW. I KNOW THEY DID THE LAST GAME. BILLY IS PROBABLY RESPONSIBLE FOR 20 ADDITIONAL HAWKS LOSSES FOR THAT TRADE.

It was the sounds of Motown coming to you live from the Charlotte Bobcats Arena for tonight’s silky smooth edition of “The Woody Woodpecker Show”. Woody and the Hawks charmed their way into the hearts of the Bobcats and their fans by starting the show off with “Tears of a Clown”. The Bobcats returned that loving feeling to the Hawks as they performed “Let the side show begin” enroute to ripping the hearts right out of the Hawks. The Hawks, undeterred continued the enchanted evening when seldom used member Sheldon Williams made a cameo appearance and sung an emotional, yet uplifting version of “Mercy, Mercy me”. There wasn’t a dry eye in the building as Sheldon was met by the entire staff with a group hug as he exited the stage……but ole Woody stole the show again, when he performed Sam Cookes hit, “The Sounds of the Chain Gang”, although he did ruffle a few feathers when he lifted up his shirt to reveal a “Free Mike Vick” tattoo printed across his chest enclosed in a heart. Woody later said that he got the tattoo as a personal Valentines Day gift, and he just could not wait to show it off. Ole Woody, however, quickly got back in good graces with the crowd when he and the Hawks concluded the show by donning six-inch afro-wigs, and performing as one synchronized train, choo-chooed their way out of the arena singing “ Midnight train to Georgia”. Well, looks like we are out of time for now, but tune in next time, and tell all your friends to join us for next exciting broadcast of, “The Woody Woodpecker Show”.

All of the bloggers out there- If you interested in getting rid of Billy and Woody- They have to be a package deal- Beavis and Butthead running the Hawks-
I would encourage you guys to keep rooting for Belkin to get this team- I think if we keep rooting for him I am hoping it will p** off the spirit punks, and hopefully get them to fire these guys. I imagine the only thing that can p** off these guys is the name Belkin.

This franchise doesn’t deserve a damn thing. I’m sick of watching the same thing year in and year out. Can’t win on the road against bad teams, but can beat the best teams on their home floor. Shelden looked like he was starting to get back into form again, and Woody yanks him. Hawks can’t make a basket down the stretch, but Salim continues to get no PT. Zaza is worthless.
We have a terrible coach, a GM afraid to make some moves, and an ownership group that won’t spend a dime to make this team any better. Until things in the front office improved and some much needed firings happen, this team will never get any better. Now after the break, we stay on the road in the Western Conference against teams who will probably blow us out by halftime.

Danger, Danger, Danger Will Robinson, the hawks are no longer a playoff seed. Again another exciting game. Woodson plays AC along with Lue and they both score double digits. Woodson plays his bench in the 2nd quarter and they increase the lead. Woodson plays 11 players and guess what we weren’t lost in space and we maintained the lead.
But just like the Lost in Space TV series, the hawks only played for 3 seasons or quarters in the hawks case.
Woodson wanted to get his veteran AJ back in the game and did not want to sit JJ (mistake). Woodson wanted play Marvin and played him at the power forward position (mistake). Woodson allowed Tlue to play point and he slowed the pace of the game and went to maintain lead mode too soon (mistake).
It should be obvious to Woodson by now that JJ has diminishing returns when he plays over 40 minutes. It should be obvious by now to Woodson that Tlue, JJ, AJ and Marvin are not going to help Horford rebound. It should be obvious to Woodson by now that Tlue is a better shooter than AJ. Yet, Tlue is the one trying to penetrate and kick out to AJ instead of the other way around.
It should be obvious to us fans by now that Woodson is doing what other so called basketball experts (Steve Smith, Dominique Wilkins, Dennis Scott) would do and that is get it to your all star and let him make the play. The problem is that our all star is not making the play, not setting up others to make the play and only Al Horford has had the guts to not give it to him to take the last play.
Also, why won’t this defensive Genius place two rebounders on the floor in late game defensive situations when the other team is shooting free throws.

tb, amen. he passed up a shot from 6 ft late only to lose the ball on an attempted dribble towards the basket. hard to get these young guys to learn how to win. need a vet that can play and a shooter bad. who to get, who to give up? does the BASG really care?
may get to see these guys soon without the burden of playoff issues and allow some of the kids to play. shoot maybe it is time to eject some of the vets that arent delivering consistently and let the kids play for real. cant do much worse than lose, right?

Same old BS. We get a lead by running and pushing the ball and Woodson forces the team into slow down mode. He causes his key players to become fatigued by the 4th qtr by using a short rotation. We had nothing left for overtime.
We all know by now that Woodson is a creature of habit and conditioning. He’s obviously not confortable with change, at least when it comes to basketball. At this point we have to point a finger at ownership for hiding in silence and allowing an overall disgraceful display of coaching and/or sabotage to continue unabated.
As fans, we deserve better. We shouldn’t have to rely on Sekeu Smith for all of our info concerning the Hawks. Do these fools really think fans are going to continue blindly spending time and money trekking down to Phillips Arena just to be frustrated and disrespected? Hell, it’s reached the point where it’s difficult to watch them on TV for free.
HEY, YOU COWARDLY OWNERS, HOW ABOUT AN ATTEMPT AT A SOLUTION TO THE TEAMS PROBLEMS. THE UNANIMOUS CONSENSUS AMOUNG HAWK FANS IS FIRE WOODSON AND PROMOTE AN ASSISTANT, PREFERABLY LDREW. AT LEAST FIRE WOODSON.

Woodson’s post game comment states that the bobcats went to zone and that forced the hawks to quit running.
Note to Woodson, Tlue is what makes the hawks stop running. Examples,
1)Horford grabs a rebound, dribbles down court and stops at the free throw line. No one is open in front of him. Tlue is still trying to come down court and doesn’t place himself in a position to catch the pass from Horford. The pass goes to Tlue anyways and goes out of bounds.
2)Horford grabs a rebound and Tlue does not try to push the ball up court. He walks the ball up court.
Don’t blame the other team for not running. Blame your slow tired point guard TLue and blame yourself for not letting AC Law run the ball.

Doc, my sentiments as well. Make Lorenzen Wright inactive and let Solomon play 21 minutes. Reduce Joe Johnson’s minutes and increase AC law’s minutes. Give Salim 3 weeks of meaningful minutes with AC and JJ on the floor to see if he can contribute.
I’m tired of Brandon Leak saying that our 3 point shooter is only shooting 10 of 36. The bigger problem is that our 3 point shooter has only taken 36 3point shots in 49 games.
I’m tired of Brandon leak saying that Salim doesn’t play defense when Tlue consistently demonstrates that he can’t play defense and Anthony Johnson also struggles on defense. Woodson should devise a defensive scheme to make up for any defensive problems.
If he needs suggestions, go back and watch game tapes of when Spud Webb was on the floor for the hawks and had to cover much better point guards that are in the league today.
The Anthony Johnson and Tyronne Lue era of getting the majority of the minutes should be over.

Hubie Brown said it best the Hawks are just flat out mismanaged… We can’t make a trade hell I don’t want to make a trade, not until we get new manangment and coach… I don’t know how to judge the talent on the team when coaching is this poor.. No point guard can develop when you take him out after a career day… A youthfull run and gun type of sqaud can’t run without a point guard to fit the style.. No screen and rolls, no pick and rolls, no offensive or adequate defensive rotations, no adequate offensive sets that maximize the strengths of the players.. no adequate plays besides Joe Johnson isolations, No adequate utilization of the bench ..No recognition of utilizing defensive stoppers (Mario West) the worst coach in the NBA the worst coach in Hawks history.. Fire the GM Fire the Coach..

The fat lady has sung, did a remix with T Pain and had Puffy saying take that take that in the background. This team is done. I said not even 2 weeks ago all it would take is a 4 or 5 game losing streak and the teams behind us would sneak up and take our spot. This shid is rediculous. It is to the point where I dont even know whey I even complain anymore or care about this team. We have a broke ownership group who probably cant agree on what time to take lunch, a GM who couldnt make a decent trade or signing to save his life, and a head coach who is better suited at working as a cook at Varsity but knowing Mike Knapp he would call a isolation on the burger at the end of the stove timer. *FIRE BK AND WOODY AND GET US SOME DAMN PLAYERS IN HERE WITH SOME TALENT. The dark side has momentum. It looks grim. The break gives everyone (except the guys that need it most-JJ & ALROY) time to relax.
Someone has got to get the swagger that allows us to close out games. You know the way they play those movie clips in Philips near the end of clsoe games. The Hawks need to keep playing that scene from The Untouchables where Sean Connery tells Kevin Costner how to beat Capone every game until it is programmed into all their brains.
You wanna know how you do it? Here’s how, they pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way, and that’s how you get Capone! Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that?

Hawksfan, guess what, its the team’s fault that the game was loss. The team is composed of Woodson, coaches and the players.
Felton played 52 minutes and he was able to come through in the clutch. It should be obvious to you by now that JJ doesn’t want someone to set a screen ala Kobe Bryant and Karl Malone in the all star game. Some players prefer to penetrate without a screen.
Your letting your emotions blind yourself to the intricacies of the game.
Tlue is the next best shooter on the floor and you notice that he is way out of the play and is not in position to get a pass and take a shot.
JJ has taken the last shot to the basket in the last 2 games and got the same result as when he took fade away 3point shots in past late game plays.
The reason you and us other fans are frustrated is because we see this team so close in these games and they can’t pull off the win.
Hawksfan, 90% of the coaches in the league would give the ball to their best player at the end of the game and its up to the best players to make the play or set someone else up to make the play. JJ has yet to do either.

Good teams find a way to win the close games - bad teams find a way to lose the close ones.
The Hawks are basically the same flawed team as last year. Their record is now 2 games better than it was last year at this point - you can credit that small improvement to the addition of Horford.
I don’t know why people had high expectations for the Hawks this year. It’s the same inconsistent performing ball club as last year - unable to win on the road - unable to perform consistently over 48 minutes.
Until personnel changes are made, the Hawks will continue to be what they are now - a 35 win ballclub at best.

Now that Devean George is holding up the Kidd trade, a hustling GM might get on the phone with Dallas and become the 3rd party to make this deal work. Along the way, you pick up a player that can help now.
Maybe we get Diopp or Harris and give up a player or two to make the numbers work.
In this deal, NJ gets pieces for the future, not to win now…so the Hawks still have a chance to make lemonade out of the current bushel of lemons.
In the almost words of Amy Winehouse…

It would be the same result with any other player in a hawks uniform reese. Why are you comparing joe to kobe. Kobe is a basketball god he compares with no one. What im saying is that if joe cant get it done by himself then let someone else do it or make it easier for him. If he had a little bit more rest, than i bet that he couldve hit that floater. hawksfan, my point is that it can go either way. Yes, I would love to see JJ play less than 40 minutes and I’ve stated that repeatedly. However, players on other teams are playing more minutes than Joe and they seem to make it work against the hawks.
I compare Joe to Kobe in relation that Joe is the best offensive player on the hawks and smart coaches will utilize their best player to try to make the game winning play. That play can be a shot or a pass to a player who makes the shot.
Like you, I’ve repeatedly stated that the other hawks players don’t have the killer instinct and lack of confidence in their offensive skills to want to be in a position to take the last shot. It is evident by their lack of getting in position to take that shot and by so many players always looking to pass the ball back to Joe in late 4th quarter situations.
My favorite player Josh Smith will take the last shot, but he doesn’t have the skill set yet to dribble penetrate in an iso situation. Teams pack the lane against the hawks and therefore he can’t post or drive to the basket.
Tonight, Houston’s Tracey McGrady drove to the basket and the lane was packed. He kicked it out to a wide open Steve Novak. The rookie hit the game winning shot. Houston’s best offensive player had an ISO situation, no screens and yet gave it up to a player who was willing to take and make a open outside shot.
In other words, the combination of Tracey McGrady and Steve Novak made Adelmen look good whereas Joe Johnson make Woodson look bad.

Besides Hawksfan, I refuse to focus my attention on firing woodson. That is something that is beyond my control.
Instead, I try to analyze what I think he is doing wrong or right. I’ve spent the past years complaining about players I would like to see on this team and no changes have been made.
Therefore, I’m focusing my attention on analyzing the usage of players on the 14 man roster. I’m not counting speedy.
Until changes are made, this is the way that I can stay calm cool and collected during these hawks times.

We have two veteran pg’s who suck defensively. A shooter who barely sees the floor, A pf who is playing great but out of position, our so called go to guy trying to play through injuries and constant double teams while also having a coach who only has two plays in his playbook, another guy in Josh Smith who probably doesnt want to resign, a guy we took second who cant create off the dribble, cant finish at the hoop if someone is there defending it hell he might blow it if he is alone cant knock down a 3 and if he isnt knocking down his jumper he brings nothing else to the table. We have a young big who needs some weight but does bring shot blocking and rebounding but cant see the court. A broke a* ownership. A GM who makes Isiah Thomas look like Jerry West. And a coach who couldnt coach a group of 9 year olds. A guy we took 5th in the draft who probably cant beat his girlfriend in a game of 21. Im sick of it. GET RID OF BK AND WOODSON. WHEN I WAKE UP TMW I HOPE TO SEE ON ESPN THAT THESE CLOWNS HAVE BEEN REPLACED

SEKOU keeps the blog rocking as usual.
How interesting. An NBA scout said all that? Sounds familiar. Oh wait, it sounds like a lot of the things some of us have been saying on this blog. Well, truth is truth, no matter how you try to slice it. I have to laugh at people who still think we don’t need a roster shakeup. I especially like how the scout recognizes the “true” core from which one should rebound: Smith, Johnson, and Horford. Nothing against Chill, love the guy. Would keep him over many others. But he is another asset that could help us get what we need. Of course, the next question is where do we get what’s needed, and how do we get it?
You know what I see in Acie Law? I see a guy who can do what Devin Harris does: repeatedly go to the basket until a defense is forced to collapse on him. Then he passes it out. In between dives into the paint, he can make them respect him with mid and mid/long range jumpers. This is Acie’s game! And it is effective. However, the black cloud of Woodson-dome will forever hold him back. I really think Acie can be the pg we can win with. But it just is not going to happen with Woodson here.
Fortunately, guys like Horford and Smith are good (and aggressive) in spite of Woody. That in and of itself is proof that a bad coach can’t keep a great player from being great.
Well, I’m inclined to agree with the scout: we’ll not make the playoffs this year unless some significant move is made. And I don’t think that shoving Woodson out of the picture will be enough. Still have to do something with the roster. We’ll see what happens.
Seriously guys…giving away a game like this one(to a Bobcats team that shouldn’t even be able to compete with us) makes me think we will not be able to handle Indy, Chicago, or even Philly late in the season. They’re all hungry, they all know how to beat us, and they’ve all beaten us before. They’ll come out with teeth and claws. We’ll come out…for three quarters.

BIG RAY, exactly what i said about ACIE to start the year!! it’s no doubt the cat came with game but he’s sufferin’ from WOODSON’s extreme gift of coachin’ skills right now!!!
for ACIE to be successful he has to have the ball in his hands and be allowed to create. it’s that simple. he was rejected by some vets early on. and now his confidence is shot. but you called in your post. and i’ll say no matter how bad his confidence might be right now, he STILL breaks down the defense better than AJ or LUE!!!
WOODSON’s gotta go…PERIOD!!!

I don’t understand all the negativity and anger.
(I mean, seriously, you should only be ticked if you really believed, pre-season, that this was a +.500, playoff team; and, to be brutally honest, are you p** at the Hawks, for being exactly what realists predicted, or yourself, for being fooled?)
Is there anything more dramatic than listening to the theme song for CSI Miami, ‘Won’t get fooled again!’?
And, honestly, if you were asked to choose who was a more ridiculous caricature of credibility and realism, Horatio, or Billy Knight, could you, in good conscience, suggest that you could have possibly been hoodwinked, any more grandly, than what Billy Knight, his collective, never-waivering enabler, the Spirit, and they’re public dupe, the head coach that our barely post-teen roster continues to play their hearts out for, despite the fact that he’s not capable of directing a viable half-court offense, making in-game match up changes, or, at least pretending that he can fake a “public” face, that suggests he understands why he’s both losing, and never getting the calls he thinks the team deserves?
Can’t we all just get along?
I think, in 2005, I suggested that this teams’ occasional wins were nothing more than fool’s gold (in fact, I have an e-mail exchange, with one of the owners, in which I point out this very concern).
And here we are, in 2008, with no changes and more fools’ gold.
Lucky are you who bought season tickets, based on your willingness to believe what was never more than a ploy for your money.
And obvious are you, Spirit, who’s lack of either front office, coaching, or roster change, merely confirms that you were more interested in fooling potential ticket buyers, rather than acknowledging that this franchise was misled from the get-go (re: Billy Knight).
If you were, or had ever been, serious, about building a winner here, you would have already taken responsibility for the mistakes that are Billy Knight and Mike Woodson. It’s not like you weren’t warned, almost 3 years ago, that you had entrusted your franchise to a spectacularly unqualified, ego-maniacal GM, who compounded his incompetence by hiring a head coach with no track record for the role, and who’s strengths (I guess we could give him credit for half-court defense, while in Detroit), couldn’t have been more poorly matched with the roster his moronic benefactor handed him, and refused to adjust.
I would be very ticked at David Stern for allowing this nonsensical abomination to continue to exist, unaccountable and largely an embarrassment to the league, if it were not clear that he’s pre-occupied with a far more incomprehensible bumble$%&@, that is, or used to be, one of the flagship franchises, in the New York Knicks.
So, that’s what we’ve come down to: an ownership group that’s more interested in selling a couple more tickets, this year, than holding it’s moronic front office, and overwhelmed head coach, accountable for repeated and ongoing failure.
I can’t blame the Spirit for wanting to be profitable. In fact, I can’t say that I wouldn’t make decisions based on the same set of priorities, if it was my investment.
But it was clear, 3 years ago, that Billy Knight was a risk they couldn’t afford to take. And there is no doubt that this concern was communicated to them by the fans, at large.
So, as folks continue to argue about where to focus the blame, the one thing that can’t be argued, is that we still suck, we’ve missed out on several franchise players, via the draft, that would have rendered that previous statement moot, and nobody has been held accountable.
Still.

WOODSON will not give ACIE a real chance ‘cause that would mean that WOODSON would have to design plays to his strengths and give ACIE some control to make decisions!! mutually exclusive is WOODSON and design…can’t happen…impossible…a clear and physical impossibility in this time, space, and matter continuim…maybe on anti-earth!!!

REECE-that excuse Woodson gave for not continuing to run says it all. As I’ve said before, he seems to look for excuses to play his beloved half court OFF. He also looks for excuses not to play certain players. He puts personal issues before the teams wellfare. How stupid can he be.
The whole idea of running and pushing the ball is to get easy shots by initiating your OFF while the DEF is in transition. HAS ANYONE OUT THERE EVER HEARD OF A TEAM PLAYING A ZONE DEF WHILE IN TRANSITION? ALaw had a very good gm and showed what he can do. We got our lead with him penetrating and dishing. Why would Woodson go with AJ instead of Acie. With them playing pressure DEF Acie could have easily penetrated and dished to either Lue or JJ for open shots.
There’s no hope of things getting better as long as Woodson continues as HC.

Ya know what? I HATE to say this, but I’m getting tired of Joe Johnson. If he’s supposedly an “All star” his trade value will be pretty high.
I’d rather give Joe Up for 2 pretty good shooters and an AVERAGE/DECENT BIG GUY.
It’s the ROLE players that count big. It’s always these ROLE players on other teams hitting the big shots against us.
When I say big shots I dont mean GAME Winners..but the type guys who make shots to kill or gain momentum.
We need more guys like that.

well i will spot them the heat victory taken away and one game on the road trip. at that they have to finish at 18 -9 to end up with 41 wins. doubt it. it is more like go 13-14 or 14-13 to end the season with yes 36 or 37 wins total for the season at best and just out of the playoff picture.
too late to change a coach to make an impact on the season. possible a trade for one guy could help if little given up in return but few teams get to do that like the lakers did.

Ray, I’m doing some fishing in the frozen pond next to Uncle Lucifer. Just caught a 15 pound bass.
Acie finally looked similar to the way he did in the season’s opener… before the Woody mind meld took his soul. With just about any other coach, he will be more than fine, he will be very good.
We’ll see in 8 days how determined the ASG is to winning. If BK doesn’t make a deal, then the owners need to fire BK and/or Woody on 2/22. ANything else suggests what I have believed from day 1. Owners are the primary reason for our continued failure.

Made the trip to Bobcats Arena to watch the game last night. Paid 99 cents for 2 tix on ebay and realized midway through the 4th quarter…that I overpaid.
The Hawks spent most of the game driving and penetrating the paint with Law and Lue and scoring easy baskets. They were shotting over 50 percent at the half and leading by 12. Then the 4th quarter starts and we see a zone defense and this team froze. They forgot how to attack on offense. You would have thought there were 7 Bobcats on the floor with the way we camped out on the arc and waited for someone else to try to score. And what does Woody decide to do…spread the floor and isolate Joe play after play. Ridiculous!
Atleast its predictable enough that I told all the Charlotte fans around me what was going to happen and sure enough….it did. We run the same play over and over settling for desperation shots and fadaways at the end of the shot clock. Thanks for making me look like a genious Woody. And why was Acie on the bench for a majority fo the second half in favor of AJ? Is it a beard brothership or something?
And for Josh Smith and Marvin Williams last night…please return your game checks to Hawks management (whoever that is this hour) because you STOLE MONEY last night. I knew Josh mailed it in with the two early fouls and spent the rest of the game complaing on the bench. For a while, I thought he was an assistant coach or making dinner plans with the officials with all the talking he was doing. Marvin, Marvin, Marvin…check and see if you were wearing two left shoes becuase you were tripping over yourself all game. And for future reference, when you are shooting 1-for-10, face the facts that it is not your night and stop shooting. I almost thought we traded you to Charlotte before the game with the way you were killing us.
On the positive side, Acie and Al played very well. Both were aggressive and played hard which is all you can ask for and I appreciated watching those two young kids. They made it worth the prcie of admission (99 cents). If our coach wasn’t a clown, he made have realized Al needed some help with Omeka before he went for 20 and 20. Even my old lady (her first NBA game) said Al needs some backside help to keep Okafor out of the lane. But I guess Woody didn’t realize that from the bench.
Finally, this team has given up on the coach and it is very plain to see. Coming down the stretch last night, heads were hanging and we all knew they were going to blow this game. The Hawks were begging the clock to run out while they were ahead instead of putting the Bobcats away. And that is becoming a common theme for these guys. Not sure if anyone has said it yet, so I may be the first….Well, there is always next year!!

It’s like why bother at this point. I like some others have posted, will distance myself until I hear news of some type of change. Stevie Wonder could see this team needs some type of change, just by observing their slide to right out of playoff contention. It’s too painful to watch these guys lose to teams they should definitely crush, & then lose to games that they really have chances to beat quality teams (Detroit, etc.). Hopefully, I’ll be able to resume watching before the end of the season. DO SOMETHING HAWKS, OR CONTINUE TO GET DONE!!!!!

ASTRO JOE-Before a deal is considered, a decision needs to be made. Ownership needs to decide if they’re going to encourage BK to make a HC change. This team needs some positive consistency and direction.
You can’t tell me this crap Woodson is pulling isn’t wearing on the players. With almost half the roster coming up for new contracts, we’d better change the atmosphere and attitudes around here. Otherwise, we’ll have a hard time resigning most of our FA’s. We could have players wanting out of here like JJ wanted out of Phoenix. When you have most of your young talent wanting out how are you going to encourage quality FA’s to come here.
Allowing Woodson to continue his mindless antics will have long term ramifications. There are players on this team that have something to contribute to the team and the league. But, for reasons known only to Woodson, they are being manipulated psychologically and emotionally while being denied a chance to play to their potential or even contribute.

If you are realistic, JJ is like Scottie Pippen if he had never played with MJ and the Bulls. He does a lot of things well, but he needs someone else to inspire the troops. Without that inspiration or swagger, you get what we’ve got.
For all the BK rage, my main beef with him (giving partial credit to Bill Parcells) is he bought the groceries for a running team and hired the walking team chef to make it happen.
As long as Woody does not have the faith to run, we will struggle with the current team.
Ando as a 41-41 guy from the start of the season, there is no anger, just frustration. Woodson did not hold up his end of the deal. Looking back to the preseason open house when Woody stood in front of the crowd and talked about having a running team, it made sense. We would use the running game in hoops, the same way you use it in football…wear them down and take advantage in the 4th quarter.
If we had done this and had the same record, I would say BK must do something to change the roster. Because we only do it about twice a month, it is a slightly better version of Charlie Brown trying to kick a football with Lucy as the holder.
All that said, if we can squeeze into the Dallas-NJ trade and pick up an asset that works with Woody Ball (probably Diop), BK should do it…and send D. George a gift for giftwrapping a player that we can use (probably for a reasonable cost.)

That should tell us alot about how serious management are about improving this team…. Matt freaking Carroll, Puh-leeze…. Can we find a buyer to relieve/deliver us from the ASG…. I promise yall if I ever when the Big Game Lottery, I will make an offer they ASG can refuse….

MannyT the problem is that Woodson decides to take out the rookies and the Hawks fall back into that same old isolation game that allowed Charlotte to come back. Why? Because he has no confidence in anyone outside of JJ to win the game.
The Hawks should not adapt to Woody Ball, it won’t work with this roster. Great coaches know how to lead a team with it’s strengths.
I saw the Wizards game last night and even though they didn’t have Arenas or Butler they still continued to do the same cutting passes and run with their guards, not trying to slow down the pace hoping that the Clippers couldn’t shoot. As a result, they beat a Clippers team that decimated the Hawks a while back.
What’s the point? The point is that when you have a coach that takes his small ball roster and continues to make them run, you will always have a chance to win.
Can that be said of the Hawks? No, because Woodson has no concept of how to do that.
Now will running solve all of the Hawks’ ills? Not all, but by doing that you are insuring that teams can’t set up on the other end defensively, and it helps place Horford or JS in better position to grab offensive rebounds.
Mark Jackson said it best a while ago when he stated he would have this team running an up-tempo style on offense and a zone on defense
Man I wish Atlanta would hire him instead.
Ken you’d be better off waiting for Godot than waiting for the ASG to make any decisions regarding trades. Do we know if BK is looking or not? Hard to tell, but he’s stuck until he gets the ok to make any deals.
Besides, a Mike Miller type player would hurt this team in the long run because he’d have to play Woody Ball.
I believe that the Hawks shouldn’t do anything for the rest of this season so they can let the Woodson era end. Making the playoffs would only prolong the agony.

The Hawks to me - are like that
To see this team lose games they should win? Feels like a NYLON/POLYESTER thong stuck in the crack of my butt! A very uncomfortable feeling to say the least. It’s feels like using dental floss for the very first time!
But, there is still hope & all is not lost! Thanks to a STARTER named Devean Broke-Back-Feet George!
He and his agent have blocked the Jason Kidd trade because he would lose Millions of Dollars in the trade. - He utilized the -
Larry “Bird-Rule” to block this trade. So now, the rich does not get richer!
You see, secretly, I have been hoping and praying the hawks would package that bench of ours and go get this guy…I don’t care if he’s hopping on one damned leg! That’s better than our entire bench put-together!
See “Boston-Celtics” The Hawks need to start blending some Hall of Fame veterans to lead JJ and his boys to victory.
BK Since you’re the EXPERT? - Make it Happen! It seems GOD and Devean George are BOTH on your side!

Getting Roy like everyone and their mother knew the Hawks should draft would have cut down on JJ’s minutes. Instead we got Shelden riding the bench along with the rest of our logjam of forwards.
Acie Law had one good game and all of a sudden you guys are buying into this guy? Even “The Duck” had a good game a month or so ago, where has he been since? Sorry, I will have to see something more from Acie to buy into his stock.
By the way, the Thrasher fans are losing their minds over the fact that they aren’t making a move with Hosa before he leaves for certain after the season. And since they need defensivemen bad, a trade seems obvious yet nothing is being done. The Atlanta Spirit are incredibly incompetent.

I was a 36-38 win guy at the start of the season who thought the Hawks might be able to sneak in as an #8 seed. The ship has been sinking steadily for a few weeks now. Action must be taken immediately. Knight and Woodson have to be simultaneously fired. Knight absolutely cannot be allowed to hire the next coach. We can’t fire owners (no matter how much we’d love to do it), so I don’t think it’s very likely that ASG would make the right hires, but I’d make Dominique the interim GM and name Larry Drew interim coach. What the hell? Why not?
Even so, I think doc is right. It’s probably too late in the season to make drastic moves that will reverse this team’s fortunes. A new GM would have to be able to make a big move (acquire shooter and big man) almost immediately after taking over.
I bet we wouldn’t have to worry about Nique trading for Danny Manning, though…

MELVIN- My thoughts exactly bro. Matt Carrol = Marvin Williams with three point range. Matt does’nt do much else but shoot- horrible D, unathletic,no rebounds….. we have this guy his name is DUCK WILLIAMS man. The fact that the ASG would try to pacify the fans with Matt Carrol……. is a dam insult we deserve more.
Come on man Matt Carrol….. in my Stephen.A voice Matt Carrol…….or better yet u guessed it Rasho Nesterovich he killz me with that one. Howz about killing two birds with one stone: Get a scoring point guard like Jamal Crawford or A.Miller or if that doesnt work offer Seattle
Marvin,Sheldon,Salim,Lo wright
for
Watson,Wilkins,Petro
After watching the last few games -I think we have an outside chance at making the 8th seed, but these guys will have to bring it night in and night out….. and we all know they dont do that. I really feel its on the coach to set the tone and Woody does …arms folded ,lipz stuck out, looking cluless …theres your tone. Im kinda desperate cuz I see the season slippn away thats y the proposed trade, but I want to see what a good offensive coach could do with what we have.
JJ- has the highest trade value on this team…… I would just see what other teams are willing to offer. How much does JJ help us -I mean taking 30 shots to get 20 points sux-reminds me of AI’s days in Philli…..A chuck machine and thats what JJ is -even when dude is off he is still firing… and no one says a word…….. I wonder if GS would give us B.Davis and P.Obryat for JJ..just a though

drmaryb, uh…the whole “first time with a thong” thing was touching…in a manner of speaking. But unless you have a physique along the lines of Jessica Biel or Beyonce Knowles…oops, I shouldn’t have said Beyonce, ‘cause if you admit to looking like THAT, Astro Joe will drop his fishing pole at the frozen lake and FIND you at all costs…Ever see “The Lord of the Rings”? Remember the all-evil Sauron seeking the “one ring” with all his might? Yeah, it’ll be like that…(chuckle). Ando, right on. Testify, brother!
Astro Joe, it appears that except for a difference in exact terminology, you and Ando belive the same thing ownership-wise. I would have to agree with you as well, but hope like hell for the sake of our sanity that the owners prove the theory wrong. Of course, I have no evidence to suggest that this will happen. I ain’t dreamin’, but I was once hopin’.
I know this is a completely useless question, but is there anything management is doing or trying to do to make some changes roster-wise? I know we’ve got 7 more days left, but I’m about all given out hope that we maybe, just maybe might do something. One thing is for sure: if nothing else is done…Woodson must go, and he must go NOW.
Acie Law is a true victim of the system. It looks to me like Woody is telling him “You can bring the ball up, but once you cross the half court line, I don’t want to see that ball in your hands again unless you’re making a pass. Give it to Joe or any of the others and get the hell out of the way.” This is NOT the Acie we drafted. As a friend and fellow blogger said-“Acie is not a shooter. He’s not a pure pg, never will be. What he is however, is a guy that CONSTANTLY puts pressure on the defense. He’s going to come at you if he’s got the ball and either he’ll penetrate and score, or he’ll continue to draw guys to him and pass the ball out. But you won’t ignore him, you CAN’T ignore him, because he’ll make you pay.” Couldn’t have put it better myself. That’s the guy we saw at Texas A&M, that’s the guy we drafted. That’s the guy we saw a glimpse of against the Bobcats. That’s the guy Woodson has held hostage.

Ladies & Gentlemen, The problem and the solution is simple. Inept ownership equals inept general managership equals inept coaching equals inept play. We have the players; when you care more about losing money, rather than wins, you don’t make the necessary changes. To replace BK, it will coat the “Idiot Ownership” money, and they aren’t willing to ante up. Coach Woodson is what you get for the money they want to spend. I guess when it’s all said and done, these owners are more concerned with p/l than having a winner in Atlanta. So, why do you want to go the the games and line their coffers? And as a bonus, what has BK ever done in his NBA career that has impressed you? Does the word “loser’ come to mind? If you continue to go to these games, I guess you’re a loser, too.

Have any of you guys ever wondered that the Hawks inability to land a notable trade is probaly due to lack of attraction or excitement for anyone to come here……Woodson doesn’t offer anything of promise to anyone……his coaching techniques flat out stinks…….everybody in the laegue sees what he is and has done here……if someone like Devean Williams can block a trade to the nets, guys would probaly be on suicide watch if they learned of being traded here……and for all of the bashing of Joe Johnson…….remember it a took 70 million deal to convince him to come here………70 freakin’ million dollars!!! So with all of the BS involving the AGS or (“Kiss my ASG” as I like to call them), maybe landing a player like Joe Johnson is “as good as it gets”, but like everyone else, I do think that something has to be done now, even if it is only getting rid of Woody…..which is probaly the best thing to do at this point.

The trade is the best tool for the tough sell teams. You won’t get a free agent because the player would have to choose to come. In a trade, choice is eliminated.
Players choose to come as free agents to 1. cash in, 2. get a ring, or 3. prove that they play on a higher level than others think.
Speedy came probably for 1 & 3. Zaza probably came for 3. LoWright came for 1???
The other free agents in the BK years have been playing for the minimum mostly so they get reason 3 mostly.

I. Mus, two things:
1)You say JJ is a chucker. I say he’s a scorer/shooter, but that’s besides the point. Woodson is the reason why you see what you’re seeing. “JJ chuck it up” is the centerpiece and dominant element in Woody’s offensive system. And when it isn’t, JJ is doing it anyway because guys like Marvin won’t shoot (somebody might be contesting his shot, you know…we can’t have that..).
2)Acie Law-we’ll see one game doesn’t make a career. Show us some consistency. My friend, you can forget that display of consistency. Once again, the interference of Woodson is prominently displayed. Acie won’t be able to show us anything until Woody lets him play consistent minutes, and play like he’s capable of/comfortable with. Hell, that’s the most Acie has played in I don’t know how long. Here lately, he’s had a hard time getting more minutes than Royal Ivey used to get last year. Remember that??
Want a link between points 1 and 2? How about this: in Woody’s “JJ, chuck it up” system, Acie (when he’s allowed to play) is required to give the ball up to JJ (or somebody else) the minute he crosses the half court line. So, JJ chucks it up and Acie won’t even see the ball again until somebody inbounds it on the other end (after the opposing team has run a layup drill on us, of course). Wonderful chemistry, ain’t it?
All the while, Billy is combing his afro, smiling, and thinking of the day he refused to shake Belkin’s hand.
Meanwhile, the owners don’t even know there’s a game on, they’re too busy counting beans in the back room. In fact, they don’t even recognize what appears to be three jersey-clad fans at the end of the bench…… “Gosh, somebody ought to call security, those guys are a little too close to the players…and one of them is really tall. Funny, we see those exact same fans at EVERY game, home and away…WHAT?! Those are players?! Really?? Wow! I was wondering where they got those names from-Jones, West, and Stoudamire. We thought maybe they had some jersey representing Fred Jones, Jerry West, and Amare Stoudamire! Well, I’ll be doggoned…we have more players than I thought we did! I wonder if they’re any good or if we should trade ‘em? What’s that Billy? They are future all-stars? Okay, buddy…if you say so. I wonder why they don’t play, though…oh well, back to the bean-counting. Hey fellas, I found another quarter! Yesss! We can eat today…if only we can find that cheap-a$$ bubble gum machine…

drmaryb:
Its friday so you are in. The thong thang “makes an old man (me) wish for younger days” as the song goes. Been a Wizards fan since they were Bullets.
Anyway, I’ve been observing both clubs and finding some similarities. While Wes Unseld was the GM we drafted both good players(“Rip” Hamilton) and bad (Kwame Brown). Coaches came and went(Bernie Bickerstaff et.al.) Seems the Hawks are doing the same.
When he “retired” Ernie Grunfeld took over. We traded Unseld’s players for Areanas, Jamison, Butler, and Daniels. We kept a couple from Unseld’s tenure, and began drafting players that CONSISTANTLY help the team. We picked up free agents. We dumped the old philosophy of having veterans on the bench like Tyronne Lue and got free agents like Roger Mason. This all took several years.
Now the team is on the rise. It’s possible that McGuire may become a valuable inside player for the Wiz. Maybe THE player I’ve been posting here is needed inside. Man has he got a nose for the ball on the rebound. although neither he nor others will be Josh Smith.
Wiz have the same coach - Eddie Jordan. Lots of positive progression, but over time. Guess the one constant my lady. Thats right - OWNERSHIP.
As you know my good doctor, everything evolves from the top in a sports organization. The Wizards have Abe Pollin and his family. Have had since the championships of the ‘70’s. I’m saying that’s the difference.
Here the similarities stop. I don’t know the vagaries (yet) of the Hawks from top to court, but when the three management componants are in proper alignment good things will happen for the Hawks.
I’ve see fire the Owner, fire Billy, fire Woody, and somewhere therein lie the Hawks problems. The triple play is not working just as it did not for the eons that Pollin remained loyal to Unseld. This may be a bit simplistic, but I FEEL its right. I’m a sensing kind of guy(never six numbers though, dam& it).
My apologies to others who post here for this epistle. Just push on by if this makes no sense to you.
Still with me girl? I’m feelin’ your pain. Post here. Tell me what you see. Am I right or wrong? Inquiring minds want to know. Keep your FAB FIVE. Marvin’s a rookie. He’s gonna’ survive. Patience, patience.

Nothing changes…if he wasn’t fired yesterday, it’s not going to happen. We are not making a trade(if we do it will not be notable). Everyone will work out their contracts, head coach included. They are running this like a company. No extra money spent(i.e. buyouts, extensions). They are not looking at the product on the floor but the books and only making decisions at the last possible moment. Problem is we don’t have enough draft picks to fill the spots vacated this summer, so the bench will be full of un-drafted scrubs. So the plan to be the Clippers isn’t working either.
Look at how the Thrashers are handling Hossa’s contract and you are looking into this summer with J. Smith. But really why would he want to come back to this when he could play for a real franchise.

GOOD NEWS:
Good information. If ownership is not in the game, GM, Coach, Players all go aglimmering. How to fix the problem? Wait ‘till next week, play six numbers, win 250,000,000 and buy the dam&ed franchise. Do you have MEGA in Georgia?

Hey Ray-Baby
I think you think too much! It’s really that plain and that simple! It’s not that hard!
Why do you insist on putting me in a cubicle? (I have nothing against cubicles however)
I actually have a corner office with four walls and a ceiling oh yeah! and two doors! Now just close your eyes and imagine that? (The second door is my escape route, to the underground tunnel…hahaha!)
You really need to work on raising your expectations about me! ;o
(I didn’t go to graduate school, combined 10.5 years of college to acquire a cubicle)
I’m Just Sayin! ;o

Yeah, I had to put that out there - for the fellas! Just tryin’ to put a smile on them long-faces. But Ray-Baby and ‘NEM? They want to make me out to be a fat old ugly monster - why is that?

Drmaryb: Thanx for the visual.
Cheetah print Huh? Thatz whass up, Im a hot dude if i mus say so myself. Maybe me and you should have been out last night being hot together instead of the female I was with. I had a god awful time last night. I swear-how is that possible go out have fun and be pampered on yallz day, thatz all it takes….. but no theres always drama………I dont see how you married guyz do it.
Ray: Im frustrated dude…. we are in 9th place in the east. I hear you though, JJ shoots alot because we have no one else to carry the load,He is our best shooter, but he looks like he’s jus going through the motions at times and his shot has been off for more than half our games . Marvin: Shuns the spotlight and is content being a back up singer
TLue: does okay is spot duty, this is why we need a M.miller here to spread the floor and open lanes for Horford and Smoove.
Woody is god awful at developing talent,I really wanted Stuckey but Acie will be a player a sum point. I jus didnt see any improvement from the guy until the Charollette game. Who knows whats going on behind the scenes I really hope Acie shuts me up, only time will tell. Nachbar and Magloire for Miller…… DAM IT- Marvin and Sheldon sounds alot better to me
BK and the ASG -Explitives, #@&^%$()) and another thing @!%%^&^%$$
Bk and the ASG sound like a band from the 80’s, Dont know how many of yall are old enough to remember NIGHT TRACKS—

Satchel Paige: Now there’s a blast from the past. He had some good advice. Upon being called up at 50 to the majors, writers began asking about his longevity - kinda’ like now with Julio Franco. Paige gave out some tips, two of which stuck with me. One I followed, the other I didn’t much to my sorrow. Never eat fried meat(my sorrow) and always ‘jangle’ when you walk. Still walking 10k three times a week, but the old hardening of the arteries is shadowing my footsteps. Got the ‘tude and got the memories. U B merry Mary. Toodles.

Check this out:

Law with starting unit is good
1. Law-J.Johnson-M.Williams-Smith-Horford 102 218 192 +26 11 4 73.3but dig down further…
If Childress replaces Marvin or Smith, it goes down a lot
2. Law-J.Johnson-Childress-M.Williams-Horford 30 46 66 -20 3 10 23.0 3. Law-J.Johnson-Childress-Smith-Horford 56 96 114 -18 7 15 31.8On the other hand… get ready folks…
When Childress replaces JJ and Shelden replaces Horf, we play much much better than linup #1:
4. Law-Childress-M.Williams-Smith-S.Williams 22 55 33 +22 5 0 100Its not for Shelden, because if JJ replaces Childress in the above line-up (#4), we fall way down:
5. Law-J.Johnson-Childress-Smith-S.Williams 22 29 52 -23 2 5 28.5Conclusion: Law plays very well with Marvin and Smith and OK with Chillz, but JJ totally screws up Law’s game. Then again, we already knew that JJ takes the ball out of Laws hands ASAP. Small sample, but not totally useless.

That’s why a “pass-first” guard is useless with this team. Once JJ gets the ball it’s never coming back.
Don’t get me started on everyone that keeps saying we need a “pass first” PG….still waiting for an example of one. All I see are scorers(off the dribble) who draw help and then dish it out ….. CP, DWilliams, Kidd, Nash …. even Stockton was a scorer else they would have double teamed Malone every time…….

Hey Ray-Baby
Your’e right about one thing. If I had a cubicle? - There would be a lot of people standing around laughing!
Because, I am just that funny. I am a self-made comedian because If you lose the ability to laugh? Life just ain’t worth living. There is enough bad going on to make you cry.
I like sports! I use if for entertainment purposes - ONLY! It’s my great escape from all the bills and work and stuff. That’s why to me it’s just a GAME! It tickles me to death when I see people actually get mad about a silly old game. And want to see everybody associated with their favorite team get fired.
It’s funny to me.
If all these people don’t get away from my cubicle and stop laughing? -
Hell, Wer’e all gonna get fired! while BK and Woody just —
”..keep on burning - and them wheels will just keep on turning - Like A Proud Mary!

drmaryb (or whatever it is you changed your name to), now when did I say you’re ugly? I just figured you must work for the ASG with all your bubbly happiness around here. And if such be the case, others of your ilk must surely be having a great time watching you playing on the blog. Of course, if you’re ASG, then so is RichBrave…and you’re probably only a few cubicles away.
Conspiracy theory? Yep. Paranoid? Nope. If you really are a doctor, then congrats on making it through that much schooling. Of course, we do have a resident doctor on board here. And he’s quite open with some of his knowledge. He has no problems discussing some things of the profession with those who share such knowledge. Know what I mean?

We need to get Salmin ready. It does not make senses that we are losing huge leads with one of the best shooters in the game on the bench. I think that we can pair him with JJ. JJ can handle the ball and Salmin can find a spot to get open for a jumper.

Semi-interesting article on the role of team president within a sports franchise. One has to wonder why Bernie Mullin’s spot was truly cut out. Do the owners realize just how much more closely they need to look at things? While there is no evidence to support this theory, I can tell you right now why I’d cut him out: he’s over Billy Knight and Mike Woodson. Both have vastly underachieved, yet Mullin allowed this farce to continue.
So what now, will the owners step up to the plate? Or is this just another situation where they wanted to save money and maybe had a behind-the-scenes falling out with Mullin? Something tells me the later is the more likely, but you never know. In the meantime, six days left after today…deadline is approaching.

yeah, myk, concur. nice to see some accountability measures. sounds like he knows what he is talking about so it will be fun to watch how he executes and whether he stays the course. as you said refreshing.
well drmaryb went to your website but couldnt get it off the home page. chiropractic huh? cool. i did gen and vasc surgery now doing acupuncture. so cool, today had a women wracked with pain from trigem neuralgia come in. hadnt had relief since her chinese acupuncturist retired and had tried several others. was going to get an epidural for her second problem of back pain and spinal stenosis. stuck some needles in and you could see the relief on her face now she isnt going to have the epidural. i know you experience these miracle daily. now about these hawks there is nothing happy about them dragging off the court heads down. we are spiraling down kiddo. no miracle can save them now.

richbrave. there is nothing in alignment right now with the hawks. my thought is it starts at the top with a true definition of what the goal is for the organization and surprisingly success to most is not in victories but bottom line. listen i am a long time fan and have had a strange relationship to the bullets back when they were fired by unseld. loved the guy. for the most part it has been survival mixed in with incompetence. not sure if the two clubs are that similar since the hawks were corporately owned and essentially cut to the bone for a sale to be followed up with the abomination of what i call the Broken Atlanta Spirit Group, a play on their own name of atlanta spirit group that they named themselves when belkin was in the mix. so that is different right there from single incompetent patriarchty of pollin to the hostage situation of the asg or basg whichever you choose. i personally go with the latter as it depicts them much more truthfully.
