The cutting room floor

SMYRNA - Since we’re dealing with a finite amount of space in the newspaper business, I can’t always deliver the entire scope of what I’m trying to present in printed form.

And that’s where this trusty friend to us all comes through, day after day, blog after blog.

Before I forget, though, let me tell you about funny.

This afternoon’s popcorn extravaganza was one of the funnier situations I’ve encountered with this team this season. I think it was an ingenious move by the veterans to stir things up with some playful (although, I’m not sure the victims of the prank laughed as hard as the rest of us) jabs from teammates to teammate to lighten the mood.

You have to do something to break up the monotony, and sometimes I guess it takes a ton of popcorn to do that. So be it. Just stay away from the Blog-Z mobile, because salty popcorn on the seats of a ’78 Pacer isn’t a good look.

But back to the things that land on the cutting room floor. I’ve had a few items the past couple of days that just never saw the light of day. But they are getting a second chance now:

FUNNY BUSINESS: The Hawks’ stat crew isn’t the only one in the league I’m keeping an eye on. In Houston the other night I counted Josh Smith with at least two blocks in the first half and yet when the half time box scores were passed out, he had a big fat goose egg in the blocks column. (A scout from an Eastern Conference power sitting nearby chastised me for caring about something like that, but I’m a historian at heart, and I don’t want the record skewed one way or the other, plus dude is a hater anyway - and you know who you are!). I brought it to the attention of the Hawks’ PR staff during the game and he asked the Rockets why Smith wasn’t credited with those blocks and got a rather dubious response. On the first one, a block of Yao Ming on a turnaround jumper that you could see clear from Shanghai, he was told that the ball bounced off the side of the backboard. Of course it did, because Josh swatted it there. On the second, a block of a Tracy McGrady dunk attempt on a fast break that certainly happened high above the official’s vantage point on the ground, it was decided that the ball simply slipped out of McGrady’s hand. Whatever. The Houston stat crew is on my watch list from now on.

SURPRISE, SURPRISE: Smith was one of the few voices of restraint Monday when I quizzed a few guys about changes being made to the make-up of this team. I didn’t go at anyone with loaded questions or anything. I explained to them the premise of my story (can anyone trust this team that hasn’t won consistently over the past three and a half years to all of a sudden just wake up and get it now?) and made sure they understood that I was asking the question without having a predetermined angle I was working. “We’re still growing,” Smith told me. “We’re still maturing. We’re still trying to figure out how to win and how to win together. We’re young and extremely talented but we haven’t gotten to the point where we can come in real confident and know that we’re going to be in every ball game. We just haven’t gotten there yet.” Interesting.

NOT AFRAID OF CHANGE: Hawks coach Mike Woodson had some candid responses to my questions as well. But due to space constraints, those comments can only be read here. I referenced the Suns busting up the core of a perennial Western Conference power to add Shaq and asked if that makes teams like the Hawks question if it’s time to consider major moves as well. “I think anytime is a good time to consider all your options,” Woodson told me. “You have to explore it all, because we’re not Phoenix. We haven’t won 60 games. If you’re talking about wanting to win and really get better as a team, every year you have to explore those options. And we probably need to do so more now than ever, because we’re pretty close in terms of turning the corner with this team.

“You figure if you add a piece or two that can put you over the hump, that’s what you have to do. I don’t think you do it just to be doing it. But if something makes sense, you’ve got to do it.”

I also asked him if he understood why it’s so hard for fans to trust that this team, as presently constituted, could “figure it out” now if they haven’t been able to for three-plus years . “And we’re not there yet. We’re not at that point. We’ve been maintaining. But I want to see us go up the leader board. We’ve been maintaining at this same spot for the last, almost two months. And it is attainable, to go up. We’re what, 4½ games from the fourth spot? But that said, it’s just as easy to go up as it is to go down. So you have to be careful.”

WHAT I REALLY THINK: I’ve been getting hammered around here and beyond for not “telling people what I really think” about this team. Josh Childress informed me that he was at a function over the weekend where someone was knocking me for not letting it all out (never mind knocking team, crack the poor beat writer). I disagree (we’re allowed to do that around here, by the way). Most days I feel like I’ve probably said too much about “what I really think” and not allowed for enough of your opinions and insights. So in an effort to stir a diversity of quality opinions, I’ll occasionally open the floor to this forum to you and allow you stir the pot on a particular day. One of the most polarizing, well-read and (for the most part) well-respected members of the family will be first up. So be ready to pull a similar shark attack on him when his ditty pops up here in the next 24-48 hours.

OUCH!!!: If you all didn’t understand the true, biting nature of what you bring to the entire process, just let the venom of Stoned Mountain sum it all up for you. The subject line of his email read “Pranks.” And it got nastier from there.

“The prank I want to read about is where Woody tries the office door and his key doesn’t work anymore.”

He didn’t even finish it off with a smiley face or anything.

That’s cold, man.

So cold!

Yeah,

Instead of pulling pranks, maybe Lo Wright should have been praticing, or running suicides, or watching game film….something more productive.

Woodson has ruined Acie’s confidence. I’m suprised he didn’t go off on Lorenzen. He has to be frustrated right now.

Damn Smith. This blog is gettin’ on a par with Dave O’Brian’s. Keep up the good work. The Wizards blogs are just —- well, blogs. This one is interesting and insightful. And you have a stable of enthusiasm and knowledge. If the folks keep running the haters - racist and otherwise, maybe some of the players can be enticed to post here like Chip Jones did last week. I think Gilbert Areanas might. When my e-mail’s fixed(virus) I’ll ask him and see if he’ll put up a post or two.

I have a question that has been bugging me a while and I hope some of the knowledgble folks around here can provide some insight.

I was watching Boston play the other day and Glenn Davis was doing good work on Tim Duncan. I wondered why he has gelled so well and Sheldon hasn’t. Could some of it be that he is surrounded by better players and what he is asked to do is less. Maybe, but guarding Duncan is tricky if it’s 4 minutes or 4 quarters. Davis fell in people’s opinions pretty far, but it seems like he will be a decent pro. What’s the difference between him and Sheldon? And calling Sheldon a bum doesn’t count.

thanks.

baby is being counseled by a real pro in garnett. our “real pro” rens is only able to come up with shows of popcorn to “teach’ the rooks some respect. now why would anyone respect him as he hasnt given a dimes worth of effort since he sliced open zaza’s scalp his first day of practice.

sheldon is biding his time like newbill, ivey and diaw had to do to get into a situation where they can play.

I am soooo tired of Lorenzen Wright trying to earn respect from the rookies. This team is sooooo sorry because we have sorry veterans like Wright being occupied with the rookies and stupid traditions like pulling pranks on rookies and making rookies serve the veterans. If I was a veteran, all I would want a rookie to do is improve his play, and I would also treat the rookies like I treat everyone; that is, with respect. I don’t believe in this pecking order crap. Lorenzen Wright needs to grow up or land his sorry behind on another team.

KEN, in response from the previous blog…

KEN, don’t disagree with anythin’ in your last post re:SALIM bro. not at all!! (DOC and i have a one-on-one between ACIE and SALIM goin’ on right now!!!LOL)

seriously tho, i knew JAN ‘07 that WOODSON coached(?) better by default with a short bench. he just can’t manage a game and especially with too many choices. so i definitely feel you on WOODSON not givin’ these cats a chance. i guess my ONLY reservation about SALIM is his lack of hittin’ shots when he did get ‘limited’ time on the floor!!!

so do i think he has been given a fair shake?? HELL NO!! do i think he’s shown anythin’ close to his college rep?? AHH NOPE!! how much do i blame WOODSON??? 90% in the case of SALIM, i’d say!! (just pickin’ number now tho) but i do expect SALIM to make it hard for WOODSON to keep him on the bench by hittin’ shots when he IS in the game.

but as i say that KEN, pls know that i know how hard it is to produce under those circumstances!! one of the hardest things for me as a musician is to play a line that’s kickin’ my a$$ while practicin’ it then play it flawlessly on the gig or when ‘record’ is punched!!! the body and mind naturally wanna take you to TENSE-DOM!!! so i get where these cats are at and what they are dealin’ with!! and unfortunately in BOTH cases, the what and where, point to WOODSON!!!

like i been sayin’…

WOODSON’s gotta go…PERIOD!!!

This is a continuation from the last blog.

DOC-you’re right, as always. I started to add another paragraph to illustrate that point, but decided not to. My point was, teams scoring 85-90 PPG, with a 4-5pt average margin of victory, are considered good DEF teams. But teams that score 100+pts, with an average margin of victory of 10-15pts, aren’t considered good DEF teams.

The hawks are actually bigger than Phoenix and Golden State. Yet Houston doesn’t routinely beat them into the ground like they did us. Granted, they do have the outside shooting to stretch the DEF.

I want all of you OLD SCHOOL fans to take a trip with me down memory lane. How many of you remember that huge(especially for the 60’s) Michigan State team that featured Cazzie Russell, Oliver Darden, Bill Bunten and Tom Meyers. I don’t remember who the other starters name. They weren’t just tall, they were physically huge as well. They played UCLA for the national championship. I remember 3 of UCLA’s starters, Gail Goodrich, Walt Hazzard and Keith Erickson. Erickson was UCLA’S C, and the tallest UCLA starter, at 6’5”. At least 4 of Michigan State’s starting 5 were taller than Erickson, including 6’6” SG, Cazzie Russell.

Wooden was asked how they were going to deal with Michigan States size and height. Wooden responded by asking how were they going to deal with his teams speed and quickness. He understood that size can be a liability if the tempo is right. For those who don’t remember, UCLA ran them off the court and won the 1st of their many national championships.

mississippi, Glenn Davis has a very experienced “big man” coach, Clifford Ray, working with him daily. In the past, he has worked with Al Jefferson and Dwight Howard. Think those 2 young power players look well-coached and ready to dominate for 10 years? Also, as Doc pointed out, he has someone like KG who stays amped 24/7 to show him how to bring energy to every situation. Based on the poor seasons from guys who at least were sporadically productive last season (Shelden & Zaza), there is no evidence to suggest that the off-season hire of Alton Lister is working out.

amen aj, one of our pet peeves. one cant tell me shels isnt as capable as davis just broken by his inconsistent coach and maybe his “peers” on the hawks. never have liked the notion of self appointed pecking orders unless it is done by guys who command respect like smoltz and chipper rather than demand it like rens. we have seen this coming for more than year i think. wouldnt you like to see rens give for two minutes garnett energy. i still think his earrings are two heavy and that saps him of his energy.

Sekou,

You’re not the only one anticipating the “debut” of our dear family memeber. In fact, we were discussing it just hours ago….

Doc, I thought I was the only one who didn’t laugh at Lorenzen’s popcorn caper. This is probably a bad attitude, but here’s what I think about it: Lorenzen Wright wants to “put rookies in their place”? How about doing so on the court?! Oh wait, he’s not 1/3 the man a rook like Al Horford is. Is this (plus a guaranteed 3 or 4 fouls) all he’s good for? I guess when you’re not good enough to play, you gotta find something to do

Joe, that’s just it: Acie was a straight killa in college. Woody has effectively neutered him. Apparently, the same has happened to Sheldon to an extent.

Well, anybody who still thinks we shouldn’t make any trades or whatever had best read what the players are saying as well: it’s time.

Ray, you’re right. Sekou’s new article pretty much has the players calling out BK to make a move. Even Woody’s comments up top suggest that the team wants a change.

I failed to mention this the other day, but when a coach takes blame for a lost, that coach must feel a level of job security. Woody said he deserves heat for the Cavs lost last week. When I read that, I was disturbed. A “dead coach walking” would never make the noose around his own neck tighter.

That said, ball is in BK’s court (and the owners who may have to ante up their summer vacation fund). Looks like our teflon coach will make it to May. WTF!!!!!!

This is a really good hawks team. We have got to be like

Sir-Aurthur Blank

And get them boys some help!

We are killing: JJ & Smoove & AL & Chil-Lax “I GOT DIS” & Marvin…& ‘NEM.

1.Mario should NEVER come off a BENCH..That’s your SIXTH-MAN!

2.Chil-Lax “I GOT ‘DIS”is a STARTER!

3.Marvin “I DONT PLAY-D” is a SNIPER! he’s the 2nd guy off the bench (run the pick and roll & let him hit that “Picture-Perfect” sweet a* jumper! he can pick us up when we start slow. Espec. on Back-To-Backs!

You feel me Rich Brave! Should I coach this team? I’d do it for 3x what they’re paying Woody! ;o

By Najeh Davenpoop

February 11, 2008 10:30 PM | Link to this

Well… another reason Glen Davis might be playing better than Shelden is because… Davis is better than Shelden.

Shelden is a late first-early 2nd rounder who happened to be taken at #5. No amount of coaching is gonna change the fact that he has the talent of a late first-early second rounder. The fact that Davis, another 2nd-rounder, is clearly outplaying him right now is evidence of that.

But yeah, having better coaching and better veterans to learn from helps a lot too.

By drmaryb

February 11, 2008 10:35 PM | Link to this

You see it doesn’t matter who starts or finishes…it’s how you play the game!

If you play the game the right way? Work with what the good God gave you & win with that. Every team passed on Gilbert Arenas, a (2nd Rounder) - Go Figure! So stop screaming about Chris Paul and Brandon Roy! For Christ’s sake, you wound like a bunch of little girls.

Didn’t Sam Broke-Back_Knees Bowie get drafted #1 ahead of MJ at #5?

No one can predict the future..we all guess and sometimes we get lucky.

Hell Chris Paul should have gone #1 But he didn’t. Play the hand you were dealt & Thank God for it! Do your freakin best and move on! We probably do need a new head coach - but we need so much more!

We need a WINNING ATTITUDE!

Mike “Gregg Knapp” Woodson.. Billy ‘Isiah Thomas’ Knight. Sheldon “cement feet, brick hands” WIlliams. Enough is enough get rid of all these clowns. I would add on too my list but i would be here all night. I know the East is terrible but we wont make the playoffs like this. We have a coach who cant adjust and is running his starters to death.. We have a GM who couldnt draft or make a trade to improve this team even if we had a time machine to show him who would end up being a great player because he is too arogant to care. We have a ownership who probably cant decide what to get for lunch as a group. Where is David Mc David, somebody anybody damn.

That’s great stuff - Keep it Up! (are you using viagra?) - Just wunderin’ if you were keepin’ it real!

Cuz,

Been a long time, I know. Don’t worry bout the hate’uz man. Keep doing what you do how you see fit. We all know Woody and BK need to go so it matters not what you or anyone else says. Until the people who write the checks see fit, it wont happen. Don’t waste yo breath.

On trades, I don’t really even want to see any players come in here if Woody just puts locks on them, anyways. I agree with a couple of cats here that Woody totally fu_ked up Acie’s game. I have said many times that I don’t want to see nobody out of work but he’s just not a head coach. But please NO Larry Brown, unless AI comes with him. I’m really tired of NBA retreads anyway. Nolan Richardson is my choice

You guys were crying about Atlanta fans pulling for the other team when the Lakers and Cavs and others were in town but pretty much all of yall said: NO to AI this summer, right!

I’m GEEEKED about my boy Shaq going to PHX. The Deisel gets a tune up and my Boy Monta Ellis, 81% FG percentage in the last 3 games. Sick! If there’s a better combo guard in the league right now, I wanta see him.

Heads up on a sleeper or maybe not this year in the draft. Courtney Fells from NC State. A 6’5” combo guy who has got all the tools and I mean (all of them). Been play’n against Men on the Front Street (Tupelo) hardcourts since he was 7th grade.

Lorenzen Wright is a scrubb. Point blank. I definately don’t claim him as a Mississippi baller. Highway robbery!

mykhalc, I did see that post earlier. Sounds like a reasonable theory. Accept, I do think that BK was tricked into believing that he would have funding to get the job done. So maybe he didn’t initially ask for Woody to accept an empty cupboard. But I’m guessing he clued him in on the truth around the same time Drew & the other guy were told they couldn’t accept the other positions. I think when he promised JJ that the Hawks would not be perennial losers, he meant it. It feels like we have all been victimized by the lack of funding, compounded by poor draft picks, injuries and extraordinarily poor coaching. Yet, we are haning onto a playoff birth by a tearing thread. Go figure.

I’m prone to following the path of the most obvious, drastic changes in any given environment (say, this blog). So the simultaneous emergence of both richbrave and drmaryb is questionable, at best. Especially since richbrave defended the honor of the Hawks’ Hack, from my admittedly sarcastic post, at both his site, as well as our own post, within mere minutes of their submissions.

If drmaryb and richbrave are merely no more, or less, than new, excitable additions to our community, then I both welcome them, and suggest they get a room, already. drmary has found an odd time, and even more unlikely place, to start an internet romance. So the cynic in me (Ando, a cynic, you say?) goes back to the possibility that out blog is an easy place to infiltrate, for entry-level employees, working for the Hawks, as well as, even more sadly, unpaid interns, squirreling their way towards their first post-college jobs.

It’s a variable combination of an arrival reminiscent of the “800-pound gorilla” that a young Dennis Miller brought to a stand-up routine, along with a rambling, often clueless, participation, that is perpetually recurring, lacks any level of insightful depth, and tends to occur when the ticket-buying masses start to recognize that, once again, the promises of the organization, that they are fully committed, and have successfully constructed, a team which justifies significant financial support, via ticket sales, from the once-again duped basketball fans of Atlanta.

What’s now lacking from this blog is the vociferous mass of humanity which was certain a playoff berth, and a plus-.500 record were inevitable.

I’d say more, but I have an assignment that needs to be attended to.

JOE, good points. i think i’m soooo jaded at this point of NOT seein’ any continuin’ positive action by this franchise that i just suspect it was all in play from the beginnin’. probably wasn’t but at this point with the BASG, NOTHIN’ would surprise me. but you said it best…It feels like we have all been victimized by the lack of funding, compounded by poor draft picks, injuries and extraordinarily poor coaching. says it all!!!

Looking at the other half of the dribble glass…

If this team has been a little tight, I can live with some pranks to loosen them up. Y’all are reading a bit much into an article that gave you an inside peek at the team. Given many of the reactions, do you think they will be supportive of Sekou putting fun articles in the AJC.

Bloggers—relax a little bit. I doubt a pile of popcorn is really going to hurt any of them. As for them being rich and a bit silly—so what. Who made all us the No Fun Patrol?

…and while I take an odd moment to agree with Woody, the right trade can help, but the current team still has some upside in this season. I can still see this team eeking out a 41-41 season w/o a trade, because the East is an easier division.

I’m watching your every move Ando. Take heart. Wiz just lost at Golden State.

February 12, 2008 2:06 AM | Link to this

Rich, I’ve been called just about everything one could imagine. I’ve been accused of the vast gap that exists between literal brain death, and inconceivable levels of megalomania. But I’ve never had a blogger say anything quite as creepy as, “I’m watching your every move Ando (I could be wrong, but I think you were supposed to place a comma between move and Ando)”.

Even more compelling is the subsequent reference to what should be a completely inconsequential outcome between the Wiz and the Warriors. Is this a clue to your identity?

The biggest Wiz fan, here, if our friend Flash. He has both indicated a personal history with Belkin, and, confusedly proffered the theory that I might actually BE Belkin. You’re clearly not Flash, as he’s particularly articulate; something you’ve yet to even give a hint of, based on your series of posts.

I’m still betting on you being either the Hawks’ Hack, or someone tangentially related to him, from a personal or professional standpoint.

I’ve had a lot of enemies, over the years this blog has been in existence. But I’ve never had a stalker.

Pretty cool.

But if you want to tangle, offer a position on something, anything, so I can quickly dispose of your place here, on our blog, and free you to pursue your rather obvious, and creepy, internet passion play with drmaryb (but honestly, dude, I would look for quick proof that drmary wasn’t drmarty, with irrefutable evidence of the actual team the good “dr” plays for).

As you are watching my every move, please offer constructive criticism, based on your observations, as I am committed to never-ending self-improvement, and would hate for you to spend your valuable time, tracing me, without enhancing my existence by pointing out areas of my behavior which are open to betterment.

I feel like I have a guardian angel, now, though I think each state has their own definitions for whatever it is you are engaged in, as you “watch my every move”.

Shout out to Ken from the last blog. Ken you have been good with me since the Falcons blog. As far as this team needing to make moves well Childress might have said it best. It might be the little move that can help this team but since BK is our GM we probably wont even get that. There are a lot of good cheap guys available and I have been talkinga bout them for the last 2 weeks I believe. Delonte West ( he is like my Luke Ridnour), Gerald Green, Jr Smith, Andre Miller, Mike Miller. Mike Miller or Andre would probably help the most but if we got Delonte and maybe JR then I think we could really improve our 3 point game and it would allow JJ to finally get a rest. I think myself and a few others pointed how Law looks like he has lost his confidence. Woody has turned him into Salim. Woody has always baffled me. A guy on the bench can come in and have a very productive game then go on the Most Wanted list the next 2 weeks because we never see them again. Law has a good game a couple games back with 8 dimes and like one turnover and how does Woody reward him. hardly any burn since and one dnp. I remember the game Solo had like 6 big boards for us and what does he get, a bunch of dnp and 2 minutes here and there. It is time for a change and im tired of waiting for it. As far as Sheldon and Glenn Davis. Well even this past draft has second round pf’s who are better than Sheldon. Sheldon is very un atheletic, has bad hands, undersized, slow, and basically not that good. He had the benefit of a lot of calls at Duke and the genious of BK to get him drafted that high. After those camp numbers came out and it showed he was a lot smaller than most people thought, he starte sliding down the draft but our great GM not only picked him 5th but made a promise to him a month before the draft. Seriously how does BK still have a job.

HB ANDO:

Dude. You’re creepy yourself. I imagine you’ve generated a few conspiracy theories in your time. If you read through the recent archives you’ll see I started posting here as a Braves fan which I am. But this blog is pretty well written and the denizens(of which you are one)seem fairly knowing as to Hawks goings on. That gives me a little insight as to Wizards machinations so its worth some time.

Seems to me you’re committed to establishing yourself not as someone willing to learn, but rather as an individual tainted by a subliminal desire to show up others in order to feed your obvious feelings of superiority. Don’t mess with me man. You’ll draw back a nub.

By HB Ando

February 12, 2008 5:18 AM | Link to this

Rich, you’re not the first to take me on. But, having checked out your most recent contributions, you’re the first who seemingly has nothing to say about the Hawks, and, really, nothing that suggests you’re up for a battle of either wits or basketball knowledge. I didn’t know you existed until you oddly came to the defense of the Hawks’ Hack.

Now you tell me you’re watching me, and that I’m creepy and likely to pull back a nub if I mess with you.

You don’t instill any fear in me, and you offer me know tangible opinions regarding the NBA or the Hawks. So, I guess, I’m wondering what your beef with me is, and whether you’d like to actually take me on, as it relates to hoops’ opinion, or just be the psycho stalker that you’re making yourself out to be.

If you believe you can intimidate me, either intellectually or physically, you obviously lied when you stated you’ve been watching my every move. There are folks here, on this blog, who’ve met me in person, and/or taken their best shot at me, cognitively. I’m fairly confident that, while I recognize a few peers, there’s not a soul here who established intellectual superiority over me.

If you have something other than idle threats, be it a position on a relevant subject, or an opinion on the state of the Hawks, or any other NBA team, feel free to bring it on. Unless it’s coincidentally the same opinion as mine, I’ll likely shred your position to pieces (not really interested in your nub).

I’ll take my chance with pulling back my nub. But I’m seriously wondering whether you’d talk the same trash in person. ‘Course that might be challenging given whatever inpatient restrictions your plea bargain allowed for.

I suggest that you focus on your blossoming internet romance with drmary, who is either within a few cubicles of you, or housed in the same institution you’ve been remanded to.

Finally, as a person with an advanced degree in psychology, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that your statement, “Seems to me you’re committed………(and I only use the dots because the idea that I’m unwilling, or incapable, of learning, is so off base, that it’s value was primarily in validating what a freaking nut job you are), but rather as an individual tainted by a subliminal (someone with either a portion of a secondary education, or half of a brain would have more accurately utilized the term “subconscious”) desire (if it was subconscious, it would be a drive, rather than a desire) to show up others in order to feed your obvious feelings of superiority (actually, clinically speaking, it would be to reinforce my own insecurities regarding my subjective belief that I was actually superior to everyone, rather than some attempt to feed such “feelings”. Feelings are an emotional state, and don’t adequately quantify the cognitive state that defines the self-perception of intellectual superiority.

I hope you don’t view my clarifying your largely incoherent, and clearly incorrect use of your intended language, as “mess[ing] with me [you}, man. I just think your 9th grade psychology teacher would hope you had retained something, in exchange for the “C” she gave you, before you quit school and, speaking optimistically, got your GED (within a half-dozen attempts).

It was simply my sense of charity, which I learned from Doc, and attributed in my well-intended critique of the Hawks’ Hack, that led me to correct your usage of the English language, while you unsuccessfully tried to intimidate me (for reasons I cannot even fathom, but would be glad to come discuss with you during visiting hours, at where ever you are housed, or at either job you may have at the AJC or working for the Spirit. Short of those three options, I have no clue what you think your beef, with me, is based on. But, as long as you’re not toting a gun, or willing to spend the remainder of your life in prison, for killing me, for no good reason, I’d be cool with meeting you in person, and chatting this out as well.

And some how, I doubt I’d be drawing back a nub.

Finally, whatever you think I’ve committed to establishing myself as, here on this blog, I accomplished a long time ago. You, questioning my place in the hierarchy of this blog, makes you look kind of silly.

One more thing: if, by chance, you’re really the Hack, you should have put this type of passion and intensity into your blog. Then, maybe more than four or five people would know you exist, and the fans of the Hawks would truly have a voice that represents their frustrations with the franchise.

Feel free to keep this acrimonious exchange thriving. You’ll quickly find, from the comments of others who have spent time and thought in contributing to this blog, that you picked the wrong dude to talk trash with.

But, as this is America, you are free to speak your opinion, so come on over and take a shot at leaving me with (or without; I’m not sure what a nub qualifies as) a nub.

Imagine how bad this team would be, had we not drafted Al Horford at #3 last year. And this includes Oden and Durant. Oden is out all year, Durant would probably be in Woody’s dog house by now, for too many bad shots or something along those lines, Yi would probably be ready to head back to China if he were playing for Woodrow, and lord knows Brandon Wright, who a lot of people thought we would select, wouldnt have a chance in hell of succeeding in this (so called)system. Luckily, for us, Zaza got injured, and Horford took over, or who knows, maybe he would be on the end of the bench. Woody is a joke!

Not much really to say. Same thing with the same team. Without a trade, at the end of the season, the players will be left to ponder “What if?” The fans will be left with “Another year of the same sh&&!” And making a trade for someone like AJ doesn’t constitute “a trade to improve the team”. If no trade is made, other than going to the game in DC on Mar 17, my attention turns to the PGA season and getting ready for the Braves season to start. This team CANNOT win with Woodson as coach. I know he is not the only reason ATL is not winning, but he is a big reason. And without a major trade or him being fired soon (NOT HAPPENING NO MATTER HOW MUCH WE WANT IT), then Phoenix will be very happy on draft night!!

Ladies and gentlmen….Ryder is gone! He was an eternal optimist, full of life and joy….

…and then he became a fan of the Atlanta Hawks! Soon his eternal joy turned to sadness as he saw numerous trades and acquisitions destroy his childhood dreams of an NBA championship in the capital of Georgia. Thanks to the arrivals of Danny Manning, Isaiah Rider, and Billy Knight this organization soon became the proverbial armpit of a professional career.

With the arrival of the Atlanta Spirit Group, Ryder soon realized that this dream could still exist…

….until the day those fateful words were uttered: “Mike Woodson has been announced as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks.”

….the dream of a championship withered and died like a flower in the winter. Ryder began to die inside as he saw Woodson’s inexplicable decisions on offense, horrific substitutions and a desire to bury young talent (re: Salim & Acie) to the point that HHH would be jealous.

…..Ryder is gone, and DarkRyder remains in his place. An eternal realist, darkryder realizes that the Atlanta Hawks are truly the crevice of the NBA, stuck in coaching mediocrity and petty ownership who values savings over winnings.

….darkryder realizes that Hawks GM Billy Knight refuses to take the actions of a sane individual for the sake of fulfilling his lust of an all 6’8 starting lineup…

….will change come? darkryder doubts it, for stubborness is the quickest path to destruction, and that is a destiny that this organization has settled for….

doc re 7:50 AM

I hope the popcorn caper does translate into something more than the regular hoops lesson from the Pistons.

I would not call it bullying. In the world of hazing and rituals, I don’t think popcorn in the car is very psychologically disturbing, but I am not a professional in that area. I’d rather have popcorn mania than someone stealing my clothes and trashing my room.

As for Lorenzen, everyone has a role to play. If he is not making things happen on the court, I hope he keeps the locker room loose and upbeat.

The beauty of this season for the Hawks is that they don’t have to be one of the 16 best teams in the NBA, just one of the 8 best in the East.

If they take off the brakes and put the team on a downhill slope (i.e. keep running), I believe they make the playoffs right around a 41-41 record.

DOC-I got your message. My restraint wasn’t a matter of being cool, but rather a matter of having respect for this forum. This isn’t a Falcons forum and I wasn’t going to turn it into one.

I want everyone who thinks the Hawks haven’t made any progress to consider this. Look at how this yrs team causes most of us to blow a gasket when they lose. Sure, we didn’t like it when they lost in past either. But, our anger, disappointment and frustration has been heightened this year because so many of our loses could easily have been wins. We’re now forcing teams to bring their A gm in order to beat us. We’re bring our A gm more ofter than in the past, but not enough to establish any consistency.

Teams aren’t consistently outrebounding us like in the past. Lately, we’ve stopped having those 2nd and 3rd qtr disappearances that took us out of any chance to win. Except for outside shooting, our problems can be summed up easily.

(1)Various talent on this team is either being misused, underused, overused and/or not used at all.

(2)The inconsistency of the team mirrors the inconsistency of our HC’s committment to a definitive style of play. It has been proven by quarters, halves and entire gms that we are best suited for an uptempo style of OFF.

(3)An uptempo OFF usually generates more scoring opportunities and correspondingly a higher team scoring average. It also allows, or requires, the utilization of more players. Fewer mins per player and the use of more players reduces fatigue and allows more allout effort from each player. In recent gms the team has consistently played uptempo. However, Woodson has countered by restricting his rotation to 7-8 players. He simply has to have control over something no matter what.

I STILL CAN’T GET OVER THE BLOWNOUT BY HOUSTON. WE’RE BEHIND BY 30+PTS IN THE 2ND HALF, AND WE STILL HAD 4 PLAYERS RECEIVING LITTLE TO NO PLAYING TIME. AS LATE AS THE 4TH QTR THIS FOOL HAD JJ, WHO IS INJURED AND 2ND IN THE NBA IN MINS PLAYED, ON THE FLOOR. JJ’s shooting woes aren’t due to a loss of confidence. It’s due to fatigue and a nagging leg injury.

I think the players like and respect Woodson, but they know he’s out of his element. They don’t want to see him hurt, but they recognize the need for a change of attitude and approach. The solutions to this teams problems aren’t an either or issue. Like JJ indicated earlier in the season, we need some additional help, talent wise. We also need some direction and someone that can handle the abundance of talent on this team.

By MannyT

February 12, 2008 1:49 PM | Link to this

mykhalc you make a funny, but I like the Chills at PG sometimes. From a defensive standpoint, he’s long and the thin frame isn’t an issue like it is when he guards larger players. It also makes the zone more effective.

Offensively, he can still lurk at the baseline and pick up his hustle points. He can initiate the basic offense, similar to his role on sideline inbound plays.

doc reasonable points. I guess only the team and their beat writer know for sure!

Now if we see AC or Mario dive for a loose ball near Lorenzen and take him out, well…

If Dwight Howard can get benched, we should be willing to play our bench as needed—either to rest the starters or send a message!

From ESPN/AP

*Howard, six days from his first All-Star start, got called out by his coach for perhaps the first time in his career.

“To me, it’s a matter of focus,” Stan Van Gundy said. “His focus is on the offensive end — he gets discouraged when he doesn’t get the ball. I know the numbers prove that what we need him to focus on to win is defense and rebounding. But that’s not what he wants to do right now, and so we’ve got a little bit of a conflict.”

Howard, the NBA’s rebounding leader who’s averaging 14.5 a game, failed to break double-digits in that category for the second time in four games. He had 16 points and nine rebounds and the Magic lost their third of a five-game home stretch before the break.

Van Gundy even sat his star part of the fourth quarter, because Howard lacked effort and said something during a break. But the fourth-year player defused the situation after the game by agreeing with his coach.*

Ken Strickland U DA MAN! The team is better, but the coaching is often up and down.

Coaches like that Jeff Van Gundy rule. If we work hard and play slow, we will rarely get blown out so I must be doing something right (not).

I’d rather see the Hawks run until the wheels fall off the bus, than run on Tue-Wednesdays, walk on Fri-Sun, and mix it up on Mondays. Confusion is not a style of play.

If they are going to run, they need to spread out the minutes. No need for JJ to be worn out trying to get a 60 pt 4th quarter in Houston.

Take the young fellas out of witness protection. I thought his name was Woodson, not Wilkens—he’s allowed to play young guys.

Ken,

Just want to say quality break in tone for with the THIS FOOL HAD JJ… bit. Though I have disagreed with you from time to time (re: Duck v Smoov), I do agree that Woody’s rotation is dubious considering his coaching style (or lack there of). If we are going to run (YES) we should rotate more players. If we dont run(NO), then a tighter rotation is acceptable- though still not optimal.

As far as a strategy, I think it would be ok if we started the game in a “traditional” offense, more half court oriented. Then about 6-7 minutes into the qtr, when Chills usually enters the game, we get pick up the tempo and begin running. Reasons for this:

  1. Chills is our best finisher at the hoops (body control) and excels at leaking out.

  2. Our second unit is better than a lot of second units we will face, more capable of running.

  3. It will give JJ a chance to rest toward the end of the qtr- since it’s my belief he doesnt like to rest anyway.

  4. It allows flexibility with substitutions- an actual advantage of all these “6’8” players.

  5. Running requires less coaching “strain” on Woody.

I’m not predicating running on Chills or any particular timing schedule, just think that it might be worth a look. We have a # of players who can initiate a break Horford and Smoov as well as ample finishers. It also gives us some experience playing half court offense so that WHEN we have lead in the late 4th, Woody will have a model of how the squad has performed against a particular opponent in the half court thus far. Thoughts…

Stan Van Gundy was lucky to get that Orlando job. He needs to be thanking Billy Donovan. He must be crazy, calling out D.Howard, who’s averaging 20 and 10, at least. I could see if it was Pat Riley, Phil Jackson, Larry Brown, or Jerry Sloan. But, Stan Van Gundy? PLEASE! He wont be in Orlando very long. He’s lucky D.Howard is a stand up guy ON AND OFF the court or this would be a huge problem. He should have talked to Dwight, man to man. You dont call out your best player to the media. What an idiot!

yeah ken baby, style effort and strategy are not a real obvious part if this team. again this team is learning how to win, unfortunately the coach is along for the ride as well. too many rookies, maybe the next time they will fill up woody’s car. what do you think manny t man? that would get a few laughing here in stereo.

ken cool how someone came and went today without a single real look or response by anyone. most respond initially by attempting to get their attention to maybe what is appropriate if they want to stay around, when they cant get it they are significantly ignored as soon as their post comes up. shame they cant enjoy the party, it is what it is and it is their choice.

VOLMAN, my trade would be MARVIN, SALIM and whomever else for MIKE MILLER. i haven’t looked at the salaries to match but that would be the one i’d start with. CHILS does toooo many things IMHO to give him up now. now if the BASG KNOWS they will not resign him at the end of the year then ya gotta look to move him too!!! but man, i’m clueless about what this franchise can do, will do, is able to do!! CLUELESS!!!!

Mike Miller, JR Smith and Jamaal Magloire(misp) need to be in a Hawks uniform before the end of this week. Heck, we should also trade Salim to Phx for the rights to our draft pick. They don’t want to add more salary especially since they acquire SHAQ.

mykhalc Atlanta has no concept of what to do with Childress, which is symbolic of how inept this organization is from top to bottom.

Since this isn’t baseball and they can’t unload him for D-League prospects, they will probably let him go for nothing considering they won’t be able to sign him long term.

Unfortunately a trade for Mike Miller would not be the answer for the Hawks. Woodson wouldn’t know how to use him since he actually has the ability to shoot the rock. He would have Miller play down low and take away his greatest strength.

Atlanta should unload Josh Childress, Salim, Zaza and Shelden Williams to Memphis for the rights to Kwame Brown.

Not only do they get the cap space, but all he would have to do is provide rebounding and defense, which Al Horford will need help with once he hits the rookie wall in a few weeks.

Tonight’s dismantling by Detroit will only help fuel the rumors.

However, after the game ASG will send out inane press releases stating that “The Hawks are still in the playoff race and therefore no deals are necessary”.

Please give up the notion that Atlanta will ever be anything more than a plodding halfcourt offense with a fast break roster.

Thanks for the vine man. Swinging through the jungle like I do, sometimes you need a friend to give you a hand up. Hey no harm-no foul. I’m sure ANDO is a cool guy, and I’m just trying to pick up a few pointers. No hidden agenda. I like the Hawks young players from the intensity and energy they have had playing against the Wizards. Of course Atlanta’s my baseball team. Anyway, thanks again for the post.

terrell While you might not like Stan Van calling out Howard, he knows that his forwards are both 6’ 10” small forwards. He needs Howard to rebound with a vengeance. If he does not, they often lose, because Hedu & Rashard don’t hit the boards like power forwards should.

Volman I hang out in the cheap (300s) season tix section. It is ridicu-d*mn-diculous how many folks come to cheer the road teams. At least this season the crowd will get behind the Hawks and defend the arena. Unfortunately, it starts with the road team and then we cheer them down as a reaction.

You should have heard the upper level giving the Lakers fans the blues earlier this month. It was a proud moment.

mykhalc I like Chills at the point. It makes us run more because we don’t want him hoisting those dead animal shot put efforts from the outside. However, all those layups and dunks lead to a great shooting percentage.

Maybe we can break the Rasheed/Roscoe curse tonight. I’ll buy a $5 popcorn as soon as AC or Mario hits the court to support the rookies!

hey ken, i just found out about korver when i suggested that name to ando at the game friday as a possible trade. you can imagine the smug look on his face as he informed me i missed one. since i knew utah was on a run i was at least able to come back with i guess he is making a difference there. heh heh

I think that’s been the nature of beat writers these days anyway. They are less journalists and more sycophants/mouthpieces for team management. Hey Zo, how about working on your game or showing some leadership by taking the players to task for that goose egg they laid in Houston. J Kidd would be a perfect fit for this team but sadly, our cap situation for next year is such a mess that I doubt it would happen. Also would love to see a Larry Brown or Mike Fratello come in and coach this team. Where the hell is Billy Knight? Hey Sekou, how about grilling him on Shelden? How about an in depth expose or interview on what is really going on at Spirit (i.e. keep costs low!)?!? I’m so over the Hawks, its ridiculous.

How’s this for a trade…

We send Marvin, Lo, and Salim to Memphis for Mike Miller.

This would work for Memphis because it’s apparent they’re entering rebuilding mode. Lo and Salim’s contracts run out after this year, giving Memphis an additional $4m to go after whomever they please. Marvin would sweeten the deal because he’s a good midrange shooter at SF.

This would work for us because we need shooters. Right now Marvin can space out defenses a little with his shooting, but Miller would space them out even more. He’d have plenty of opportunities with JJ’s penetration and Josh’s budding low-post game.

I’m pretty sure everyone can agree we won’t miss Lo. For those of you who aren’t ready to give up on Salim yet all I have to say is that he’s a pure shooter. That’s really it. He can’t beat anyone off the dribble, he’s not quite a liability on defense but he’s not far from it. Redick was better at everything Salim was in college except defense and his best case scenario is a good 6th man on a bad team.

We’d be trading for a player slightly better stats than Marvin but multiple times the outside shooting ability. Marvin doesn’t like to bang - he has some smooth moves down there but he’s never going to be a real presence, at he rebounds poorly for a player of his height and jumping ability.

Right now we just don’t have an option when teams collapse in on us defensively, and Miller would solve that problem.

That being said we need to lock up Chills and Josh soon, their stocks only rising, and when we make the playoffs and if either of them steps it up a notch it’s only going to cost us more to resign them.

By cp

I don’t even see us in the rumor sections about possibly making a move. The sad part is BK and this broke ownership probably feel that just because we are positioned to make the playoffs now that we dont meed to make any moves. The teams behind us are not that far off from surpassing us. All it takes is us going on another losing streak and the teams below us getting in a good rythm and then its over. Make a damn move and improve this team

I do expect at least one of the Hawks (Lorenzen or the rookies) to sell popcorn at the next Hawks Foundation charity event.

If the lack of trades is all about (the lack of) ASG cash, I say move some expiring unrestricted FA contracts for a cost effective defensive big man and scout the D-League all star game for the best available shooter (or play Salim if you can find him. Thanks for the update on Korver. A day late and a dollar short I guess. Man, we need another shooter bad. Of course, if we got one we’d have to hope he could stay out of Woodson’s doghouse.

How many of you remember the days when Hubie Brown coached the Hawks. He started out using a 2 platoon system. He didn’t employ an uptempo OFF, but he did employ an uptempo full court pressure DEF. A minimum of 10 players got mins each gm and there were no complaints about PT.

Hubie understood the advantage of forcing teams to use up extra mins getting the ball accross half court. He knew deflections and forcing players out of position to help get the ball accross the line reduced half court time of possession. The idea was to give teams no more than 10-12secs to initiate their OFF. Increasing steals and turnovers also increased easy scoring opportunities.

Imagine how effective we’d be if we used a full court pressure DEF. Teams with size, like Houston, would be at a decided disadvantage. Man, we have the talent, depth and versatility to make it work big time. We just don’t have a HC that can/would make it happen or even handle the responsibilities.

Joe Johnson doesn’t need to be traded. He hasn’t lost a step. What he needs is about 5 games off to rest his sprained ankle. It’s not fair to expect him to produce at peak level when he’s playing with an injury. It’s nice that he is trying to play through it, but clearly it is hurting the Hawks right now. Sit him for 5 games or so, let the offense run through Josh Smith and Al Horford, and give the young’uns in the backcourt more playing time. This way the young players get more minutes, the team learns to close out games without relying on Joe Johnson, and Joe gets to rest his ankle up for the stretch run.

It makes perfect sense… which is why it will never happen, I guess.

Still running the same plays, still losing leads late, and still sorry as hell. Something needs to be done. My suggestion is trade JJ and get back in the first round of the draft. Build this team around Jsmooth, Horford, Chills, and Law. This season is over. Enough is Enough!!!

okay comments on the game.

first of all, loud crowd for the hawks even tough flooded with piston jerseys. did my best to get and provoke sheed who i love into the second t. he wouldnt abide though he called the ref a bi*ch.

some of the hawks dancers gained more weight than i did for the holidays. swimsuit ready some of them arent.

blog z in great form after the game, a true prince. i guarantee you he wasnt worried about the lack of blocks called for j smith. wont share but some real good opinions that arent to be repeated here.

guarantee the person more surprised with the last substitution of marvin for horford than me was marvin. i was able to look right into his eyes, i assure you i was more ready and willing to go in there than marvin was at that point, 3 beers or not.

as far as marvin, i wonder how many players in the nba have the same percentage made from 18 ft as they do from 2. yes marvin cant finish at the basket nor shoot the open shot consistently.

now from the told you so list, though i might have missed on the three spot thinking yi is the man and i think he will be given time and a system to play in which of course he wouldnt have gotten here but that is besides the point right and i digress? stuckey is much more developed and confident than acie has been all year and oh yeah he can make the shot from 2 or 20. well make it two players that shoot the same from 2 and 18 on the hawks. unfortunately with acie it is 0% from both areas. sorry myk he deserves the spot next to salim. the guy has been broken and the popcorn didnt help his game one bit. stuckey is the guy i suggested just as i did with roy and we will be sorry bk didnt listen to me, he is a stud.

and yes terrell because you have been quick to dispute it i think, even if roy had been on the team we would have had a very similar draft position since roy missed a good twenty games to start the season and was first thought to be brittle. his presence would have forced woody to get some milage out of rens since we would have been short a “big” without shels around to pick up the slack. that might have gotten us a few less wins right there but a good popcorn popper and popcorn placement assessor

saw none other than gm joe dumars at the game. gee i remember when he was a svelt quick point guard. he now looks more to be along the lines of the frig perry and ready for the middle guard position on a pro football team.

ok, ill propose a trade marvin, acie and sheldon for miller and crit. i also think crit will finish ahead of acie in the long run. any trade only speaks to bk’s inability to get it right the first time so i doubt it as his ego which is greater than ando but not as vociferous.

after this morning i can truly say ando is somehow a mish mash of rodney dangerfield, howard cosell and mohamed ali all wrapped up into one. how you say? gee easy, “i get no respect”, “i tell it like it is” and “i am the greatest”. richbrave you had no idea who you were taking to …. some times even we dont, those that love him the most. heh heh. by the way i have already said this to him face to face, he only confirmed it early this am.

more may come up but i can say right now that jhan insisted and told me to say all this.

really fun game. shame we didnt win as we could be legitimately 7 to 8 games below .500 after this road trip. oh and did i say we need a shooter, big and a point guard in that order to make a real run at the playoffs. maybe the BASG can come up with the dollars to do it. yeah dream on hawks fans.

Loss to Pistons: not a surprise.

Joe, I’ll take you up on that prediction. No, I’m not arguing…I’m agreeing. The Bobcats need a win worse than we do. They could get it against us if we’re not careful. Another thing to remember: Gerald Wallace and Jason Richardson LOVE playing against us. Then again, I would too if knew Marvin Williams was guarding me…

Doc, might have to agree on your opinoin of Crittenton vs. Acie. He has more raw talent capability. And with Acie being subjected to Woody-ism…well, that’s a guaranteed result.

terrell barron, you may as well drop it. Woody doesn’t know how to run, and passes that fear on to his players. But we have a few well-known facts here: This team is built to run. This team is still missing some pieces that would be present on a successful running team (steady running pg, shooters). This team has a coach that would desperately like to no run, but has little choice. He’s a half-court offense coach. The coach doesn’t even know good half-court offensive sets. Now, take all of that into perspective and tell me who’s fault it is….that’s right, you already know the answer, don’t you? Just as frustrated as you are, I assure you that I am…

Everyone keeps suggesting trade Joe, saying he doesn’t come up in big games, but I would like to see how easy it is for anyone to score 20+ points a night when the defense knows what is coming. There is only so much he can do. As we all know, Woody is not the greatest at X’s and O’s, asking Joe to dribble past his man night in and night out in an iso is going to work but so many times. Believe it or not but he creates space for Josh Smith, not the other way around. Trade Joe and watch them struggle even more to score.

At least the game was entertaining. Some small tweaks that I would like to see Woodson make are

1)Let AC play the point and Tlue play the 2 guard to give JJ some rest.

2)Go back to half court traps and jump switches. I have not seen the hawks do this in awhile.

3)Play Josh Smith more at the 3 spot along with Zaza and Al Horford. The same could be done with Solomon, Josh Smith and Al horford.

Also, Sekou, please report on Woodson’s viewpoint on the NBDL and why he won’t send his players to that league to develop.

Finally, who is the hawks strength and conditioning coach. Doesn’t he see that our players are falling down too much when bumped and not bumped (Marvin Williams).

Hawks players are not able to hold on to the ball when the other teams players slap at it. This can be helped by simple things like finger tip pushups, squeezing hand grips(I think thats what their called) and being cognizant of the fact that they need to hold the ball tighter when grabbing a rebound or pass.

Myk, I knew when Acie was in for about 4 minutes that he wouldn’t see the floor the rest of the game…AHH! Do you like what Acie brings to the team? (I know what you think about Chills!!)

I really think the Pistons did a good job on stopping Chills on his baseline catches and dunks/layups.. He got blocked a good amount of times down there..they were ready for that.

Again, where the HECK was Joe Johnson tonight? Honestly, the crowd (for the most part) tried to get the Hawks back into it..and we did, but the guys just couldn’t get the stops they needed.

VOLMAN, i ‘liked’ what i saw early in the season and the pre-season. ACIE brought attitude, confidence, and game. i remember seein’ him play good ball against NASH when they played in ATL, KIDD, BILLUPS early on. in the pre-season he was postin’ cats up on the block. he kept the ball in his hands and just made plays!!! now, he’s been WOODYSIZED, a shell of himself!!!! it’s really sad to see WOODSON suck the life and game outta the players on the team!! and he has, no doubt!!

but that’s what cats do when they are insecure and need to/have to exhibit control!! WOODSON knows that his players think he is a/the weak link!!! in one of Sekou’s last articles NONE OF THEM really gave an endorsement or support to WOODSON!!! unless we call, ‘well we’ve won with WOODSON before too’ an endorsement!!??!!

it’s obvious that WOODSON breaks cats down instead of tryin’ to build them up!!! he’s truly handicappin’ this team!!!

and that’s what i think about ACIE’s game!!!LOL but i know ya feel me VOLMAN!!!

Last night’s episode of “The Woody Woodpecker Show” featured the Detroit Pistons, who dazzled the hawks while portraying the Harlem Globetrotters, with Chauncy Billups starring as Meadowlark Lemon…………while Woody, not to be outdone, countered, and orchestrated the Hawks to perform a slapstick version of the keystone cops, which included hoedown dancing to the musical theme of “The Beverly Hillbillies”. Ole Woody then brought the house down as he led the Hawks with an impromptu moonwalk into the locker room at halftime in honor of the 25th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album. Even screenwriter, Billy “BK-Home Of The Whopper” Knight joined the fun by belting out a soulful rendition of his favorite song, “I Did It My Way”, to which the appreciative crowd showered him with plastic afro picks and bottles of Stay-Soft-Fro. A blushful and soaking wet Knight later admitted that this would be one of the few times that the audience would actually see him on the show. Please join us live from for another exciting broadcast of “The Woody Woodpecker Show”!! On a side note, media mogul Steve “Who Let The Dogs Out” Belkin was rumored to be seeking a move to take over the highly rated show, but current producers, (“Kiss My” ASG) had no comment.

Come on Doc, Frig Perry? Admit it, you’re exaggerating a little. He can’t possibly be as big as Sir Charles. Can he?

I’m pretty sure that the Hawks are 1-4 in games when Smith scores 26 or more. JJ looks like he just turned 35 and feels like 45. His legs seem to be gone. We all know that he needs to sit out the All-Star game and go take a 5 day nap.

And Doc, another thing. After Woody applied his Vulcan mind-meld to Stuckey, he would be as confused, tentative and emotionally fragile as Acie. Our coach has hollowed out the souls of Zaza, Shelden, Acie, Salim & Solomon so far. They are each the Tin Man, Lion and Scarecrow. No heart, no brains, no courage. Just empty shells.

Props to my manz Rodney Stuckey,The yung’n did his thing last night. I called it on draft night - I said that this guy would be a good player. Enough already with the is he a true point or a combo guard. Stuckey is a baller period, Now how many people would take this guy at 11 if the draft were tomorrow…… ah ha thatz what i thought.

Acie Law - I jus dont know -he doesnt show me anything, o wait…. he can really light it up in garbage time. Itz way to early to call the guy a bust so Im with Astro Joe -

SEND ACIE TO THE NBDL- Where did the guy from A&M go, this is really wierd. Iz it Woody or did the guy lose sumthing over the summer……… Acie has hit a total of 6 jumpers this year that didnt come in crunch time…….. DAM

Marvin Williams…… PULLEEZ Where are the folks that want JS traded over Marvin. Thatz got to be the dumbest shyt i’ve ever heard.

“Marvin is a jumpshootyer only” He cant finish at the rim unless he’s wide open. Apparently he cant stand up and dribble at the same time either. The guy is all alone and falls down out of bounds - loses the ball only to have JS swat it away on the other end….. Marvin blows another dunk -got dam u uncordinated fool. From now til next training camp Marvin is the center piece of any kinda trade-Marvin and expiring contracts. Marvin for M.Miller straight up. Monta Ellis is really doing his thang I mean 81% is rediculous for anyone much less a 6ft 2guard. I cant believe he was drafted at # 40….. Wait a minute we drafted Salim over this dude, how good would he look next to JJ? JJ -Sumone put out an APB- this man is MIA again-I think this is game 20 or so. If not for Smoove we would have been blown out…… trade JS-Puleez for who?

I think Van Gundy did what he had to, I woulda pulled the guy to the side personally. D.Howard has to be a defensive presence for Orlando to win. They have guys to shoot the rock Lewis/Turkoglu. Dwight needs to be the enforcer not a jump shooter, Maybe Vangundy going public will make Dwight realize he’s been playing soft in the post.

LO Wright is the biggest waste of 3 million ever, a 7ft practical joker, you gotta be kidding me. Lo makes 3 mill and Magloire makes 4- a guy who could really help is rotting away in N.J. while this dufus is playn jokes on rookies…Thats our organization in a nutshell…..JOKE

Quick JJ stat. He has shot 40% or less 25 times out of 48 games. This is not what the Hawks paid $70M for. Yes, he plays too many minutes, is double teamed, etc. But all stars adjust by passing or speaking up. BTW, the Hawks are 8-17 in those games were Joe is having an “off” night - which is more than half the time.

JJ shares the blame with Woodson. Fire woodson and bring in a coach who will use a 9 or 10 man rotation with spot opportunities for his bench AND who has more than one play that he calls in the last two minutes of a game after a timeout. A curl off a screen for a 20’+ shoot from JJ. I think the other teams have caught on…

Marvin For Mike Miller ALL DAM DAY

Miller gives you what JJ does and maybe more. Curry is your low post scorer maybe 18/7 in our system. system??? Crawford at point guard, brakes down defenses and scores in bunches ………. we are 29th in the league from 3pt range. SUMBODY GOTTA GO PERIOD…… since JJ is MIA why not him, He looked horrible against Houston…….. ALL STAR-I THINK NOT

This is my opinion on how things will go down following last night’s loss. A loss where we really should have won, but we showed a lack of offensive discipline — especially in the fourth quarter.

I think that management is looking to make a personnel move. However, if we can’t make a trade — I think we’re at the point, that both the GM and Coach will be considered for replacement.

Bottom line, I think there’s one move in the near future for this group. If they can make a trade for a player, they will — but if they can’t — I think that management will try a change in leadership.

Either way, it’s time to do something — and that’s not something I’ve said in two years.

Later,

Don!

Marvin,Lo,ZAZA,Salim for Earl Watson, Delonte West,Petro

AJ could back up Earl Petro at center and AL goes to PF… the line up looks like

To be honest with you guys, I believe the Hawks will begin to slide out of play-off contention if they lose tonight. They will be only one game in front of New Jersey for the 7th spot and 3 games in front of Indiana and Chicago with 32 games remaining after the all-star break. Then they have to play a five games on the road against the West (i.e., the Lakers, Sacramento, Golden State, Utah and San Antonio). The Hawks might get lucky and win one game against Sacramento. Since Woody does’nt know how to use all his players, and since the Hawks won’t be able to make any good trades before February 23, the Hawks will end up with a record only better than the following teams: Memphis, Clippers, Minnesota, Seattle, Miami, Charlotte (maybe), Milwaukee (maybe), and New York (maybe). Consequently, fellow Hawks fans, we could end up with the fifth worst record in the NBA. With the way this team has been coached, this can definitely happen. Please tell me what you think fellows.

Nets just got deeper. And with 2 first rounders, Harris, Stackhouse, Diop….they got a ransom for Kidd. Yes they gave up a Hall Of Famer but got a lot in return.

Another trade goes by with BK sitting on his azz doing nothing. Even in this Mavs-Nets trade, he really couldn’t come in and throw Lorenzen to the Nets while taking on Diop? Even a minor trade like that would have helped this team immensely. Both of them have expiring contracts, both of their salaries match up, and Diop would have clearly helped the Hawks’ playoff push more than Lorenzen. Clearly the Nets are looking to rebuild at this point, not contend for a playoff spot, so I’m sure they wouldn’t mind either. BK, DO SOMETHING!

I would like to see Atlanta send Sheldon Williams to Golden State for Mickael Pietrus. Send Marvin and Zaza to the Knicks for Eddy Curry. Our starting 5 would be Anthony Johnson, Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Al Horford and Eddy Curry. Pietrus would come off the bench behind JJ.

I don’t think the JKidd trade is final as of yet. It will be interesting to see if this deal is finalize before the All-Star game. Being that JKidd has been voted to start and play for the East Conf All-Stars. If he plays for the West, would this East be allowed to add two more spots. One spot being vacant for Kidd’s departure and the other for Kidd addition to the west team. If so, maybe our very own JSmoove would be added to the all-star team….

Sweetd, if the Hawks are able to do business with the Knicks. I would like to see Speedy include in a package going to them. The Knicks are one of the few teams that wouldn’t mind eating his contract to get rid of some of their huge contracts/problem childs(Curry/Randolph.)

If JJ was traded, Woody would still call his #, with the game on the line. Thats the only play he knows. lol (isolation for JJ). But seriously folks, It’s either JJ or Marvin, if we are to get something in return. JJ could get us a couple of good pieces, or he could get us a 1st rdr, which we desperately need. A (real) playoff contender would love to have him. And lets face it, this team is going absolutely nowhere, with this current roster. And to tell the truth, I dont think he wants to be here. As it pertains to Marvin, if we want to move him, we better do it now, or else it’s going to be too late, based on the way he’s been playing lately.

Hey Clyde

Here’s the word on your boy TJ-Ford from HoopsHype:

“Unfortunately for the Raptors, Ford has almost no value now as teams fear he could be seriously injured on their watch. - Chicago Tribune -“

You still think the Hawks should trade Marvin and Chills for this guy? There’s more stuff on him not playing Monday for the Raptors due to Neck/Shoulder problems. Man we already got a broke-back-knee point guard on the bench.

Mr. Not-So-Speedy! Let’s move on, I was praying we would try to get Jason Kidd, but apparently he refused to consider us..Only a contender at his age it seems! I guess wer’re no contender …Huh?
