Wild Wednesday
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
SMYRNA - Super Tuesday is a wrap.
So welcome to Wild Wednesday, in the NBA and beyond.
In LA, no one’s talking about Obama or Clinton. They’re talking about Pau Gasol and Shaquille O’Neal, and for very good reason.
One of those giants was the linchpin to three championship runs for Lakers fans, the other guy could be the linchpin to future championship runs.
Either way, it’s a sickening sight to see the rich continue to get richer in the NBA.
If Shaq is traded to Phoenix for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks - whatever shape he’s in, last time I checked just having Shaq on your roster guarantees you’ll get a step or two closer to the NBA Finals - it’s just another blow struck by the privileged (and won’t it be interesting to see how nifty the Miami Heat look without the big fella around to blame for all their mess).
The Lakers already were on pace to be a handful for someone in the playoffs. With Gasol in the fold, they look like true contenders for the Western Conference title and beyond. I don’t know that Gasol can handle the Tim Duncans and Amare Stoudemires of the world, but it doesn’t hurt to have him trying instead of Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum.
Watching Gasol do work (24 points, 12 rebounds and four assists) on the Nets last night reminded me of a conversation I had with Joe Johnson during training camp. We were discussing the rumors about the Hawks chasing Gasol in a trade. And I asked JJ if he thought Gasol would really help or if he was too soft.
He wanted to fight me for having the nerve to ask such a question. The short version of his answer was that anytime a player draws double teams inside, he helps everyone else out tremendously. He opens the floor for everyone else and wreaks havoc on an opposing defense, which then has to compensate for him on every possession.
Gasol’s finest qualities were being camouflaged in Memphis earlier this season. But the for the people who know his game best (opposing players come up big here) and those who have watched him dominate during international competition for years, any success he has in LA won’t come as a surprise.
I feel like a busta (careful, throwback reference for all you jokers born after 1980) for even questioning whether or not he could have made the Hawks (or any other team as desperate for a low-post presence) a better team.
and on to assorted other topics:
I wrestled with my own conscience over the past 48 hours regarding how to adequately describe to people what it’s like chronicling the early stages of Josh Smith’s career without being too over the top about what you see on a nightly basis. I thought Andre Iguodala put things into perfect words regarding young Mr. Smith after he choked the life out of the Sixers Monday night when he said, “He is one of those rare players. Nobody in the league is doing what he is doing, concerning scoring, rebounding, blocking shots, and getting assists and steals.” When you factor in that Josh would be just a senior in college in the previous (before KG) era, it’s even more frightening to think what could be ahead for this cat. Because as hard as he works now, he’s only going to keep improving in every aspect of his game in the years to come. I wrote before this season how ill advised I thought it was for the Hawks to allow both and Josh Childress to become restricted free agents at the end of this season. I was too nice. In retrospect, it was an error of (as Silky Johnson would say) epic proportions (it’s funnier out loud when you’re doing your best impersonation of the King of Haters). The Hawks would be smiling all the way to the bank if they’d have locked young fella up with an offer of say $11 million per season and then he continued to blossom the way he has this year. Instead, they’ll have to wrestle the bears that come along this summer (and please believe that the bears will be hunting for him the second free agency starts). Again, the Hawks made an error of epic proportions by not taking care of this business before the season. I know folks in Boston will go bananas when I say this, but if Kevin Garnett needs an injury replacement for the All-Star Game, Josh Smith should be that dude. My boy Marc Spears (who covers the Celtics for the Boston Globe) says this could set off a second riot in Boston (after the Patriots’ fall from grace Sunday, he said this would just be cruel and unusual punishment to not add Ray Allen in place of KG). “You can’t have a team with the best record in the league with just one All-Star in the game,” Spears said. “With all due respect to Josh, who deserves to be an All-Star too, it’s a matter of circumstance that won’t work in his favor, unless somebody else gets hurt.”
My college football Jones has kicked into high gear today (Ash Wednesday/Signing Day for all you catholic school refugees like me), but I’m doing my very best suppress the urge to spend the rest of our time here yakking about it. But my boys are closing strong this morning - we’ve snatched a few kids from other schools that will keep me smiling for at least two or three days - and if we get Terrelle Pryor, watch out!!!!!!!
The trade winds have to be kicking up with great force in the anticipation of that Shaq deal going down. What that means for the teams like the Hawks remains a bit murky. But if a shooter is what the Hawks desire, then a shooter shouldn’t be that hard to find. The sticking point then becomes how much they want to spend on a quality shooter/scorer. I don’t know that there’s a cap on what I’d spend to solidify my team’s playoff position. But it ain’t my money, ha. But dream up your list of the best cats for the job and tell me what you’d do. Me, if Mike Miller’s available, I’d have to do whatever it took, within reason, to get him here. I’d need a proven guy, someone who not only makes jump shots but also can score baskets in whatever way necessary. Miller’s also an underrated rebounded, defender and all around player (he averages 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists, in case you were wondering).
What was that? You’re tired of my long-winded rants?
Fine.
I’ll leave you in peace until this afternoon. But I’ll be checking in every few minutes (in between stints on the recruiting web sites, to see if there are any suggestions for shooters that I’ve whiffed on.

Sekou do you think that Memphis would go for trading Mike Miller for mainly expiring contracts( Lue, Johnson, Wright) and maybe Shelden, or would the Hawks have to give up one of the young guns in order to pick him up?

The only question is, how many points will the Hawks lose by tonight? 20, 30, maybe 40?

So does this mean we can throw out that dumb a* 59 sec makeup. Shaq is now a Sun, it shouldnt matter if he fouled out or not. As far the trade goes, I think it is a great deal for Miami. They get to take Shaq’s salary off the books and sign Elton Brand next summer, thats the name that their throwing out there, and they will probably end up with Michael Beasley or OJ Mayo.

He’s not available, of course, but Steve Nash would be exactly what this team needs - a running, passing PG who also happens to be a deadly 3-point shooter. Oh well.

Memphis is having a fire sale, and we need to get Miller. I think he would be a great piece for this team. Miller went for 30 last night. I still say a point guard that can break opposing team’s defenses down, would do wonders for this team. We are getting killed at the point guard position. To bad we couldn’t get both millers (Andre and Mike).

**Mike Miller, Jason Kapono, JJ Redick, Keith Bogans, one of the Knicks players. Any of these guys will help. What would help also is trading Marvin in a package for a big man so we can resign the Joshes this summer.
But, I’m telling you…If the pathetic ASG DOES NOT resign Josh Smith and/or Childress, they will be LOSING a LIFETIME Atlanta Hawk fan who has invested great money and time into this franchise.

Memphis will want more than expiring contracts for Miller. Now if we throw in Marvin, we could probably get a deal done. Would you guys consider doing that?

SS, I’m not going to flirt with the idea of trades that will never happen. The Spirit are too BROKE to do anything.
-They will not make a trade because they can’t afford extra salary.
-They will not replace Woody because they don’t have the cash.
THESE THINGS ARE NOT ON BK, THEY ARE ON GEARON AND HIS IDIOT GOONS.
Check your blogs during the preseason. I was SCREAMING for them to lock up Smooth. This guy has improved by leaps and bounds each and every year, but coming into this season, the Spirit said “lets see how he does this year…” Several times I said that I was watching #5 with mixed emotions. I love the guy and want him to be special, but every good play he makes this year puts him one step further away from Atlanta (as I have NO faith in the Spirit to sign hum).
If Josh Smith does leave the Hawks, then I am going with him.

Good point about canceling the makeup game for a guy who’s not even on the team anymore!

I was hoping that the cancellation of the makeup game was part of the deal for the trade to through, considering the fact that Shaq was the main focus of the game in the first place, and he’s no longer there.

The Hawks will win tonight simply because of two things:
1) The Lakers are on the tail end of a road back-to-back
2) The Hawks have an uncanny knack for playing better against the good teams in the NBA than they do teams that are .500 or below.
Later,

Marvin is getting some more face-time this morning on First Take, along with Sheldon of all people. Talking about the Duke/Carolina rivalry. Marvin needs to getting prepared to guard the best player in the league. Oh my God, were in some serious trouble tonight. If Woody’s smart, he would put Mario on Kobe for a while, but we all know that he’s not, so he wont. Let em run Woodrow, or else!

There is no way BK is trading Marvin for Miller, If he was going to trade marvin, he would have did it to get Pau Gasol, or another big name player. Also, Memphis is having a fire sale, they would most likly prefer expiring or soon to be expiring contracts (aka zaza) therefore a deal center around Miller for zaza and tlue along with draft picks would work for the hawks in theory.

They needed a big body to control Duncan in the playoffs, thats why they signed Shaq. They can still run with Shaq. He can still rebound, throw outlet passes, and defend the paint. They dont need him on the offensive end. They can plug Strawberry in for Marion. They still have Nash, Hill, Stoudemire, Bell, Barbosa, Diaw, and Skinner, and now throw in Shaq(old and all). And you think they just took themselves out of it. I disagree! Their just as good today, as they were yesterday, if not better.

To me mike miller puts us in the playoffs and maybe we win a couple of games as well. With him out there no more double teams on Joe and if we dont have to give up marv we could play joe at the point some because he wouldnt have to do it all. Just think about a lineup of Joe, MM, Marv, Smith, and Big Al. A huge lineup that might not be great a D but unstopable on offense. All this is fun but think of or Gm and our coach and then you know none of this will happen. Obama won GA. Man I wish I was Black.

This is a bad move on Phoenix’s part.
They are banking that Shaq will be refocused and energized because of the trade. But the fact is there is very little diesel left.
Regardless of even that fact, a young Shaq would not have fit into the Sun’s style of play. Running full speed all game has never been the man’s specialty. For any and all players to be affective they have to be in a system that is complimentary to their skills. Obviously Shaq is and has always been a great player. Still he is no more than what he is. A mountain. And everybody knows Mountains don’t move very well or very fast.
The Phoenix Suns are about speed and movement. I get the plan of having a defensive presents. But coming back on the offensive end, the Suns will be one man short. And once Shaq does finally get onto the offensive end, they will be one man short getting back on defense. The only way I can see this working is bringing Shaq off the bench to provide a change of pace. And will the Great Aristotle stand for that. I think not.
Besides all this is the fact the Suns have instantly made themselves much older and slower. The complaint had been that teams can’t keep up with them. Add Shaq and we might just slow them down enough to be controlled. I promise you for Phoenix, this trade is a disaster in progress.

It would be funny to see the NBA send Shaq out for that last minute as a member of the Heat. I know it won’t happen, but imagine how odd that would be for a day.
At the moment, I am not worried about the ASG being foolish enough to let Josh Smith go. However, like buying an airline ticket, they will have to pay extra for waiting until the last minute to sign him (probably after someone else puts up an offer sheet, so they don’t have to figure out a contract number…can you say Anderson Varejao?)
I hope Woody lets them put on their running shoes for tonight’s game.
Ryder be careful about eating that shirt. While BK does not make splashy moves, he has made small ones during the season (AJ, Medvedenko)
Let’s go Hawks!

Mike Miller makes perfect sense for this team. Besides Salim who does’nt play and JJ we have no long range shooters. Miller would take the scoring load off of JJ and also open up the floor for Smoove and JJ to work. The question is do you start the guy like I would or do you bring him in behind Marv. I think a bench of Marvin, Chillz, Acie and Solo would be good then you have a balance of Shooters and post players starting.
AJ,JJ,Mike Miller,Smoove,Horford
With Miller in the starting line up this would cut down the number of outside shots JS takes. Speaking of Josh-the boi has all star written all over him,I think he needs the right coach to refine his role. No way you trade this guy.
Janero Pargo would also be a good pick up

Folks,
I have stayed away from writing on this blog for a while. However, I have been reading the posts consistently. But I must say that after some serious introspection I realize how much respect I have for all you long-suffering fans.
I became a fan of the Hawks in the Doc Rivers/Dominique era. I know some of you have been fans for maybe 10 times longer than that. When I see the inept front office consistently being outmaneuvered year in year out I ask myself, how can people continue to be fans of this team? The ownership and executive management in charge of this team ought to be chased out of town. I agree with the poster who said wherever Josh goes he’ll be going with him. I can assure you that makes two of us.
Here we are now a couple of days away from the trade deadline and we are all eagerly awaiting the next tragedy!!! Sad to say but that is the negativism that has been planted in the minds of those of us who call ourselves Hawks fans.
BK and the Spirit!!! Get off your collective asses and trade for Mike Miller now!!!! Then look for a serviceable big man just to clog up that middle and who even has average offense and let’s make the playoffs. Oh and by the way Woody don’t ride your horses to death although sometimes I can empathise!!!
If nothing happens before the deadline I will be convinced there must be things we do not know other than the obvious that is preventing BK to do anything.
Quite frankly I am indeed very very frustrated.
ATL is indeed a losing town and to think we just added a WNBA franchise. How much more losing can this town take?!!!
Please Mike Smith and Dimitroff we need you more than before!!!!
Nuff respect!!!!

Who are the “privileged” of whom you speak, Sekou? By “privileged,” do you mean “teams that make smart decisions, draft well, are players in the free-agent market, trade to fit their needs and have a coach and GM that know what they’re doing”?
I guess people who work hard and are rewarded for doing so are only “privileged,” huh, Sekou?
I’ll let my boss know that I’m glad he’s so “privileged” that he can pay me for my work every week. Because he certainly didn’t work to get where he is; he was just lucky.

Although proposing trades isn’t my thing, it’s still interesting reading all of the trade proposals. I’d like to pose a few questions and give you some food for thought.
OWNERSHIP HAS SO FAR REFUSED TO MAKE A FINANCIAL COMMITTMENT TO RESIGN JOSH CHILDRESS AND SMITH. IF MONEY IS AN ISSUE, WHY WOULD THEY BE MAKE A TRADE AND TAKE ON OTHER PLAYERS CONTRACTS BEFORE RESIGNING THEIR OWN? WHY WOULD THEY TRADE THEIR EXPIRING CONTRACTS, WHICH IS THE BIGGEST ASSET FOR A TEAM WITH FINANCIAL ISSUES?
It doesn’t matter what player is available or how much he can help the Hawks. Any trade BK wants to consider has to 1st meet the court imposed guidelines. Then he has to get separate approval from the Spirit Group and then Belkin. We all know how motivated Belkin would be to approve anything proposed by BK and/or the Spirit. After all, wasn’t it a proposed trade approval that started this whole rift in the 1st place?
I think ownership would like to make the playoffs this yr, but I don’t think they’ll make a committment to make it happen. I think they’ll make all of their trades and financial committments in the off season for next yr. Hopefully, this ownership crap will be resolved by then.
DOC, don’t worry about me misinterpreting anything you say to or about me. Actually, that goes for everyone, especially the regulars. I know there’s a decided difference between the Falcons blogs and this one, trust me.
RAY, NAJEH, TERRELL, STEVE T, DOC, etc-our discussions aren’t usually a matter of right or wrong, but perspective. Intelligent, concerned, openminded individuals will often view the same thing from different perspectives. Everything in life isn’t meant to be taken literally. Sometimes the solution or reality of an issue isn’t in the black or the white of it, but in the grey, which is the blending of the two.

I still say Mike James and Jamaal Magloire are the short term fixes that preserve our cap flexibility while still making our current roster playoff ready.
We dont have to throw the baby out with the bathwater to get these minor deals done.
Houston is overloaded in the backcourt and James is unhappy. He is a gritty veteran PG with 3pt. range, that manhandled the Hawks when he was in Minnesota.
Magloire hasnt put any mileage on his 6’11, 260 frame since his Allstar season in New Orleans two years ago. Despite not playing, he hasnt been a detriment to the locker room.
Obviously, these guys have warts but dont jump to any conclusions about their playing ability because we see every night with the Hawks guys perfectly capable of contributing yet DNP every night.

I don’t think expiring deals will net us Mike Miller. Memphis would be foolish to continue to liquidate their team in hopes that they can attract impact free agents to sign with them. I’d guess that Miler gets traded for draft picks and a promising young player (or 3). Since they have one of the best young SFs in Gay, I don’t see that we would be able to offer them anything that they would desire.
Wally Szcerbiak has a ridiculous contract, $12M this season, $13M next. Let’s say that we could offer a deal that would give Seattle an extra $10M in salary cap room next season, do you think that would appeal to them? We trade Lo Wright, Zaza, Lue & Salim to Seattle for Wally S. & Petro. Instead of paying Wally $13M next year (plus another $1.5 for Petro), they would only be on the hook for Zaza’s $4M. We get a young center who blocks shots plus a proven sharp-shooter who can get his own shot. And the best part, when Josh Smith needs to see his salary increase significantly in the 09-10 season, Wally will be off our books. They could release Salim immediately and probably trade Lue to a contender (like Boston) for a 2nd rounder.
Seattle hasn’t invested a lot of playing time in Petro this season, so maybe the $10M in payroll relief next season (plus $6M in expiring deals this summer) will encourage them to pull the trigger.

AstroJoe, you make good points, but that Wally $$ is too much to absorb for this ownership group. They are going to want to pay someone no more than $5m to come here and hit jumpers. I would not be surprised to see Damon Jones as an option. He has a couple of years left in him to possibly come in for a burst of points. I would forget about the Mike Miller option. His arrival only takes away minutes from JJ and Miller will want to come and start. We had the options we needed in the draft (Paul, DWill and Roy) We royally screwed those options up and now Billy is faced with the fact that he can’t pull the trigger or the ASG simply won’t exceed the cap. All the proof is on the court. We simply admit the Shelden mistake and Salim has one thing on his mind come playing time. What could any reasonable person do at this time other that just hope NJ wants to get rid of Kidd so bad that they take Chills, Shelden and Acie to send the magician to Atlanta. That is simply a pipe dream I know, but if you are reading this Billy, you need to quit walking the dog and make up for your previous snafus while you are still in charge.

SCOOBYSNACKS-thanks for the update. You’re probably right concerning the other teams reluctance. Imagine proposing trade possibilities to a GM that has to get approval from an ownership group composed of as many individuals as most teams have secretaries. Then the proposal has to be approved by a separate owner who’s sueing the other owners and isn’t likely to make any decisions that will benefit the other owners.
We all know that a team’s overall success is directly related to solid ownership and management. Considering the Hawks ownership situation, I guess we should be thankful the team has done as well as it has. GOOD LUCK TONIGHT MY HIGH FLYING HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to throw my comments in about the Suns/Heat trade. Its looks to me that the Heat got over on another team like they did with the Lakers a few years ago. Lakers finally got rid of Brown and got Gasol which is an excellent trade from them. But everyone needs to wait on the Lakers because in a few weeks/months Odom is going to get hurt and Kobo will be by himself again (Gasol is injury pron too!). As for the Suns, what are they thinking!! I don’t think Shaq is washed up physically, but the guy is going through a divorce that is a significant distraction for “family man”. The Suns are now going to have to play inside - out, remember they played well enough without a center (Tim Thomas was and is not a center) for one playoff run and beat the Lakers in the first round. (No Amare that year) Shaq can’t even play the hole game, so Skinner is going to have to play center for a significant portion of the game.
The Sun’s defense had actually improved this year, their problem has been their inconsistent shooting. With this trade they gave away two shooters, their second best shot blocker, their best rebounder (check the stats), the guy with the most steals and guy that basically allows them to play their style. Now their going to change styles in mid-season, which will be very difficult for everyone. (except Nash of course!) The Heat get Marion, a top five pick this year (probably #1 knowing the league), and probably some more picks when everything is said and done. (not to mention the cap space) I don’t see anything good in this for the Suns, accept that their going to get the Hawks #1 this year, which they were going to get anyways and they got something for Marion who they probably weren’t going to sign at the end of this season. (which I think is dumb) I personally don’t think we will really see the impact of Marion not being in the lineup until near the end of the season. (guys who play Fantasy Basketball know that Marion is one of the best players in the league statistically, in the leagues I play he’s almost always #1 or #2)

Will someone please tell me how team that are already good and positioned to go deep into the playoffs, if not win it all, find way to better themselves and our local franchise just sits by and watch their cap space increase? Horford was a good pick (finally) and the jury is still out on Acie, but when Boston goes from the bottom to the top, LA goes from the top to a higher level, when Phoenix (not sure this trade will work like everyone thinks it will) does something to improve and change their game, why is our Omnipotent GM sitting on his hands? Maybe because Shaq and KG aren’t 6-8/6-9.
We passed on Chris Paul (outright STUPID) and took Big Baby Sheldon Williams over Brandon Roy and Knightstill has a job? I mean come on guys, 2 All Stars??? You gotta be kidding me!!
Please Atlanta Spirit fire Billy Knight NOW. This city is tired of mediocrity and is in need of real leadership. Billy needs to go!!

KevinM is right. Atlanta Spirit won’t even consider taking on any extra salary, which begs another question: Do they plan on simply letting the contracts of Lue, AJ, and both Joshes expire so they can recoup the losses?
I believe that until there is a final resolution among the ownership group they will not take on any more contracts. I do believe that in the long run they will allow them to expire without any compensation so they can rebuild on the cheap.
Good thing I won’t have to eat my FIRE BILLY AND WOODY T Shirt, it’s going to be a hot item come April.
I have a feeling tonight’s game is going to be as ugly as that girl in the Planters commercial.

Wally world is’nt worth 8 million a year much less 12/13. I think there are cheaper ways to obtain a shooter.
Kappono, J.Jones,J.hayes all come to mind.`
Damon Jones is a wack sandwich and wouldnt bring much in my opinion.
Petro would be a good pickup for expiring contracts and a bench player.

I have as much confidence in BK acquiring a quality player as I do Michael Jackson babysitting the kids.
This is the worst possible situation. Despite the terrible year, the Falcons do have an owner that will spend money and really wants the franchise to succeed. So atleast you have some hope. Hawks on the other hand, can’t or won’t shell out any money for much needed help, even in a time where the playoffs are in reach. So you don’t even have the faintest glimpse of hope…
Why don’t Spirit just sell the team if they have no interest in the team succeeding, that is what I cannot understand.

what about kirk hinrich. Could Atlanta not get hinrich and noah for a combination of marvin williams , Acie Law and expiring deals.
Zaza and Noah would make a decent center combo to me, with horford to help at 5 in short stints. Hinirch gives you a shooter at the 1 ( the position you need it at and lets aj move back to the back up position he should be in. Tlue is your 3rd pg/sg. Salary should match up pretty well.

Sekou, the best thing that could ever happen to the Hawks would be for the “bears” to come calling for Josh Smith this year. He’s worth a lot more to the Hawks in a sign-and-trade than he is as an actual player. Take off your foam finger and your pom-poms for a minute and look at the guy’s game. He can’t score from outside of 3 feet. He is a power forward who stands around the top of the key on offense, waiting for a chance to jack a bad three or go for a follow dunk. And on D he just coasts on his long arms and leaping ability to block shots. The guy has NO FOOTWORK whatsoever. It’s like he has never been coached….

Good luck trying to acquire a shooter from a playoff bound team. Guys, haven’t you noticed thatthe teams who are selling are the ones without much playoff hope? Do you really think Colangelo will trust Moon to hit an open jumper in the playoffs and let Kapono go? Same goes for Larry Hughes (in lieu of Damon Jones) and Stuckey (in lieu of Jarvis Hayes). We will need to find someone off a losing team. Maybe JCN from Memphis. But I would start shoppping from the bottom of the standings before I assume that a contender will trade away a veteran shooter.

The Suns WILL NOT stop running just because they added Oneal. He’s there for the playoffs only. Steve Kerr realized that his team is a playoff team, but not a championship team. I’m not saying that Shaq will bring a championship to Phoenix, but at least Kerr had the guts to make the move. Every player on the Suns wanted Shaq. They dont need him to play a major role. Just man the paint, play good defense, rebound, and throw the outlet pass to Nash. And remember, motivation is a mutha f***! He might just be REJUVENATED, in a Suns uniform. I guess their tired of losing every year, in the playoffs to the Spurs. Maybe Shaq can help slow down Duncan.

Sekou,
Quick question. Will Shaq’s trade to Phoenix affect the ‘unfinished’ game between the Hawks and Heat scheduled for later this season?
Since he won’t be on the Heat roster, we won’t be able participate in the remaining OT period for which he was eligible — and the rationale for the resumption of the game from the point of his fifth foul.
It would make sense for the league to just go ahead and uphold the previous result at this point, wouldn’t it?
Thanks,
Don!

Those guys in Boston are some cocky ones I see. Where was all this talk when Paul and Twoine were making the all star games on terrible Celtic teams? . As I thought. Tell those guys to keep it to themselves until they actally win something. Quite a few of us on here were saying that not by singing Josh Smith this summer this team was making a big mistake. I mean seriously do these guys pull straws to make decisions or just pick a card from a hat. Getting Mike Miller would make sense which in thus means we wont be trading to get him because we never ever do anything that makes sense. I would love for this team to get Mike Miller and Delonte West. I know I have been talking about West a lot but I like what he would bring to the table and he would be cheap. If this team does somehow make a move that makes sense then I might send BK a new pick for his afro or get Woody a book full of new cliches to use after games.

I knew MWilliams’ critics would start up. You obviously don’t know much about playing inside. Two of Marvins fouls came as a result of screening his man off the boards too vigorously. Marvin contributed as much as anyone to Horford’s 20 rebounds. I watched him to see what he was doing that prevented him from rebounding better. When the ball went up, he put his body on a player and kept him off the glass.
I’m not saying that’s the reason he hasn’t rebounded better in the past, but I know what he did tonight. Maybe a better understanding of certain aspects of the gm would help your assessment of certain players. Anyway, good win tonight Hawks.

really fun game to watch tonight, got to love the effort at both ends.
where is ando to state the real reason the lakers lost, they had bynum out and it was the second game in two nights.
aj have you finally come around to the idea that josh is huge and the real deal? dont know if they really had any dollars on the table last fall but i can bet it is one more time that the broken atlanta spirit has shot themselves in the financial foot. kinda like thinking that airline tix might come down if you wait.
myk, the duck butt was boxing out for horford so he could grab his 20, right?
we need a shooter that can make the uncontested 16 footers and this team could really run and give folks fits.

Excellent game, even despite the fact that more than half the people there were Lakers fans. Damn Atlanta sports fans suck.
Great 2nd half by the Hawks. I say that because they played the first half like a team full of rookies in awe of the stars on the Lakers. But they buckled down in the 2nd half, played good D, got out running on the break and won the game. I’ll try to convince myself that Kobe legitimately had a bad shooting night, and it had nothing to do with his dislocated pinky.
But gotta give credit to the Hawks for making the comeback though… a year ago they probably wouldn’t have pulled that off. Big contributions from Childress that didn’t show up in the stat sheet, and big clutch shots from Lue late in the game. Props to Woodson for letting them run too.
I’m not gonna hate on Marvin’s horrible shooting or his 1 rebound in the entire game. What I am going to point out is that in the 3rd quarter, he missed a 10 foot jumper that came bouncing right back towards him, and instead of following his shot and attempting to get the offensive board he stood there like a damn statue and let Sasha Vujacic run the loose ball down. That, folks, is why he will never realize his potential, and why the Hawks should trade him. Every other player on the Hawks who gets big minutes has the mindset required to come through in big moments and take advantage of their talent. Marvin doesn’t. He doesn’t understand basic s** about the game that you learn in high school.
But if Josh Smith, Joe Johnson and Al Horford (the unquestioned three best players on this team, maybe in that order) continue playing the way they did today, it won’t matter how bad Marvin stinks it up. Hopefully they close out this homestand with another win against Cleveland on Friday… that would be huge.

Now that was a game. I had a feeling our guys would get revved up for this game, but still didn’t know if we’d win. NICE win, and hopefully something to build on and use to get back to .500 (or better). Otherwise, it’s another nice win that’s very forgettable at season’s end when you’re looking at a losing record and no playoffs.
Is Josh Smith doing it all or what? I wonder if some of us still think he’s not worth the money. I’d say that half a season has proven any such person dead wrong. Again, where’s all the bloggers that said he had an attitude problem and was a headcase? I see a guy who is the team’s most versatile contributor and biggest cheerleader of his teammates. Admit it, you called it as wrong as you possibly could. I said he made his mistakes and paid for them. Some of us just couldn’t get past it. Well I hope you’re past it now.
Reese, sorry about that. Didn’t mean to try and take the wheel of the bus away from ya…heh heh heh!
Ken, come on now. I’m not going to criticize Marvin. He didn’t have such a good game, but he didn’t suck either. He contributed. However, Horford earned and deserves the credit for his 20 rebounds. That beast of a power forward has put in the effort this entire time and has come close to getting this many rebounds several times. He boxes out on both ends and really gets after it. He gets in the right place at the right time and flat out hustles.
Horford gets to the ball all by himself. He gets there whether his teammates box out or not. His effort, talent, and effect that he has on the game has nothing to do with his teammates. It’s what makes him who he is. It’s also why you just about can’t take him out of the game. And yet, he must have his rest. If Marvin’s boxing out (which is inconsistent to say the least) is a factor in Horford’s performance as you say, then why don’t other guys match his performance in similar situations? Look, I said I’d not criticize Marvin. But he does NOT deserve credit for something Horford has been doing all along. I see Horford rebounding against two and three opponents all the time. Which means two or three of our guys aren’t getting a body on somebody. So there goes the supposed team effort. I’ll say this: 7 or 8 times out of 10, Marvin is one of those guys who’s missing the assignment. So I’ll also say this: he’s not the only one to blame.
And I’ll add something else you likely don’t agree with: we need another guy who’s got the size, ability, and committment to doing what Horford does. Then we’re not asking Horford to do nearly all of it, all the time. The only other guy really getting at it on the glass is Josh Smith. Childress does, but due to his lack of size and strength, he has to fly in from the rafters. Still, that’s hustle that I’m not seeing from other guys. Effort, effort, effort. Forget the stats, those will come with the effort. How else does one explain a guy like Jason Kidd, who outrebounds guys who play much closer to the basket on a regular basis? Effort and smarts (knowing where to be when the shot goes up). That’s all there is to it.
None of our guys are plain dumb (well, that’s always debatable on a blog, and rightfully so). So I tend to rule that out. Effort. Effort. Effort.
Speaking of which, did TLue have a hell of a 4th quarter or what?

Steve, we’d be foolish not to want Mike Miller. Whether or not we can/will make the right offer to get him (if he’s indeed available) is another thing altogether. One thing is for certain: he’s a veteran player who’s very smart, and does a lot of things for his team consistently. He can certainly shoot, but he passes, rebounds, and plays some “D”. More than what we’re getting from some guys, I don’t care how you slice it.

I wonder what it would take to pry Andray Blatche loose from the Wizards? Dude produces every time he’s in the starting lineup — 15 and 14 today with a couple of blocks. Why they play Brendan Haywood ahead of him, I have no idea. Washington’s a playoff contender too so I doubt they would trade him to anyone, much less someone in the same division, but I’d like to know what it would take. Would a Marvin-for-Blatche offer be enough to even get them talking?

also…this game points to Sekou’s point about the big need for that additional shooter. LUE provided the additional shootin’/scorin’ tonite. but this game really underscores SS’s points made today!!!
and how many damn shooters do the LAL have???? geeeesssshhhhh

I kinda wish the Hawks could combine AJ and T Lue into one player, and Acie Law and Salim Stoudamire into another player. I can’t find any fault with Woodson’s management of personnel today, but it still sucks that Acie Law (and obviously Salim) get a DNP-CD. Acie has shown some promise in some situations this year, but he has to get some playing time to develop. At the same time, if the Hawks want to trade one of their veteran guards to create that playing time, who do you trade? Lue and AJ are far from perfect, but each one brings a completely different set of skills, and in any given game the Hawks might need one or the other more. Tonight it happened to be Lue. I don’t know. Maybe Acie should spend some time in D-League just so he doesn’t rot on the bench.

Great win tonight. Horford is a freaking beast. Marvin has to learn to bring it night in and night out. Dude has too much talent and natural gifts to only be grabbing one rebound. JJ had a great game and Josh Smith keeps raising his price tag with his play. Too bad the cheap spirt group did not lock him up earlier. My only complaint is how we play great teams well yet we play down to teams like the Clippers. We really need to start putting away teams we should be beating. Great win

I didn’t mention any names on my last post just to see who would react. Take it easy fellows, I’m not trying to chastise anyone. Just wanted to get a reaction. That was a good gm from start to finish. By pushing the ball we got a lot of easy baskets. That made our poor overall outside shooting less of a problem.
I love the way TLue pushed the ball and took the pressure off JJ. I also love JChildress’ gm. He’s so versatile and rarely makes mistakes. His overall gm is equal parts physical and mental. Looks like ALaw has become Salim’s roommate in Woodson’s doghouse. Woodson’s going to totally destroy the confidence of two players who’s gms are based on it. The sad thing is the strength’s of each player could solve the 2 major weaknesses of this team, outside shooting and PG play. Let’s see how long it takes for Woodson to start reeling the OFF in.

SUPERB WIN HAWKS. I AM SOOOOO PROUD. I too was on the band wagon..FIRE WOODY…but now since he has taken OUR advice and allowing the Hawks to run..run..run, they look and play so much better. Woody s a great defensive coach, although I think Steve Smith could coach the team as well. JJ played like an ALL-STAR..JS is indeed the most consistent player, and Al H. is beast that I can see turning into a even more dominate player than Dwight Howard….(hit the weight room Al). Just for thought imagine…JJ, JS, Al H., JC, and……JASON KID!Wow!!!!! Keep up the wins HAWKS! Shock the NBA world….Go Atlanta!

KEN, one of the main things i like about CHILS’ game is that he is always (ok 99%) ready to hit the glass when a teammate takes a shot. he seems to anticipate that better than any of the other HAWKS except for maybe HORFORD!!
and if WOODSON deserves props for this i’ll give it up. but it was real nice to see HORFORD get increased touches and to see CHILS get the ball on the wing…very nice!!
now havin’ said that…
WOODSON’s still gotta go…PERIOD!!!

When I’m wrong, I’m man enough to say it. I didn’t think Woodson would let these kids run and ATL showed tons of heart…kudos to Horford and Smith (as usual)…Great win by ATL!!!

This team is so close. Mike Miller would be a great fit, and so would Kirk Hinrich. If you could get those two players, to me the team would be set.
Marvin and Salim to the bulls for Hinrich and Noah.
AC,Zaza,sheldon for Mike Miller.
Then you have a team of
pg: Hinrich, Aj, Lue sg: JJ, Childress,Mario Sf: Miller, Childress pf: Jsmoove,Horford,Solomon c: Horford, Noah, Solomon
Team can go all shooters or big, very versitle but still with enough size to battle.

News from Spain. This week is the “Copa del Rey” tournament. In this competition play the best 8 teams from the ACB (the spanish basket league) during 4 days. The important thing for the Hawks is that one of the most important sport newspapers had comfirmed that there will be 3 Hawks scouts. There will be many interesting players, like Marc Gasol (Pau brother), Ricky Rubio, Rudy Fernandez (drafted by the Blazers this year)… Do you know something about that Sekou?

Doc, I was impressed by Smith’s game last night. I was using it as a barometer of his maturity level. Would he be so focused on “putting on a show” that he would forget to help the team win the game? He was outstanding against the Lakers.
If memory serves, I recall that his agents didn’t appear to be very interested in signing a deal last summer. I thought I read that BK made an offer, his folk said “not enough” without offering up a true counter-offer. Hey, I wish he were signed too, but it takes 2 to negotiate a deal. And if that report was right (or if my memeory is right), that feels like his agents were interested in letting him have the kind of season he’s having now before truly sitting down to get a deal done. Here’s my guess, if the owners are broke, they won’t be able to afford Smith at $10M/season. So if he ends up with $12-13M, that will cost them about $10-15M over the life of the deal. They may feel that was worth the risk coming off the inconsistencies (not to mention maturity issues) of last year. If they don’t have the loot to pay him, then letting him establish more trade value this season makes a lot of sense. Still, as good as he has been (and he has been very, very good), I would use the contracts of Kevin Martin and Al Jefferson as a measuring stick when I sit down with his agents.
At the end of the day, I’m guessing the Hawks were prepared to spend around $12M to keep him. If the owners can’t afford to up that by a little, then it is what it is… the Atlanta Clippers (before Sterling finally paid his players).
I think the surprise has been Childress. Over the past few games now that the team is truly trying to run, he has emerged as an offensive weapon. How many guys can average 15 points without a single play being called for them? And how many are so clearly interested in team success that they never, ever complain about playing time or being a starter? I’m certain that we won;t re-sign him, I just hope that we get good value for him in a S&T.

without mentioning any names seems like stretch is being coy.
aj no doubt it takes two to tango. there are also limitations as to what this franchise can do because of the broken atlanta spirit. you and i know this off season is a bellweather one for the franchise as to what to begin to expect going forward, treading water or going up the ladder to i guess mix metaphors a bit for those into visuals. i know you supported the wait nd see and not without some merit however any further discussion on where josh wants to be is moot. he wants to win and if it isnt in alt it will be somewhere that is willing to go for the gold. seems some teams are holding the cap line at the upper limit so that might actually help keep the big stuff out of his reach this time around so he might be willing to take one more shot before becoming a true free agent. i certainly dont know the big picture on who can do what in the grand scheme of things that will ultimately enter into the players with the cards to play.

Props to our yung horses Josh and Al,way to go out and compete.
Realist- The numbers dont lie,17 points on 7-11 shooting,50% from 3pt range,9 assists,9 rebs, and 5 blocks…… Come on guy- Now why were you wanting to trade him again? The guy just has freakish talen and deserves to be here long term.
When we get a coach to refine/tweak his game a little he will be an All Star no doubt. How do you support a player who disappears 2 of every 5 games?
ANSWER: I have no clue, but Marvin did a Davin Blain again last night. “5-17 and 1 rebound” I said “1” dam rebound yall, that is rediculous. We need more than jumpers from the guy,try rebounding or locking your man down on D. Why the hell would’nt you want Mike Miller here????? The guy can really score from mid range and behind the arc,he has good rebound numbers for a Sf and he handles the ball well. Our Sf shoots 17 footers only and gets torched by the oposing team. See:Outlaw in the Portland game.
I guess T.Lue is 100% again,he actually looked good last night,6-10,2-3 on 3’s. If Lue gives us that type of production Acie might not see the floor for a while. I cant say that i mind that,we are in a playofff race and we need result this is’nt the time to be working on your game- Acie we’ll see you in summer league. CP- I wish we could get D.West -I really like his game. Janero Pargo,Mike James and Jamal Crawford would be nice additions. Good ball handlers who push the rock and dont need help getting their shot.
Kevin-As much as i like your trade scenarios I dont think they will happen.
Heinrich/Noah for Marvin/Salim That deal sounds like a winner-I would be comfy w/h ZAZA and Noah manning the center position for us. Now its back to the waiting game……………

I’ve come to the conclusion, that if a move is to be made, Marvin is the odd man out. He’s too inconsistent. When his shot isnt falling he cant make up for it with rebounds or defense. I’ve been trying to stay positive , but I just cant see him getting that much better. Maybe I’m wrong, but until I see more consistency, I’m officially off the Marvin train. Priority: resign Smoove and Chill. Untouchables: Smoove, Joe, Chill, Horford, ?Law?. Trade bait: Everyone else!

Sweet win last night. There is no doubt in my mind that Smoove will be an All-Star and a Super Star in this league one day. I think Mike Miller would be an excellent addition to the team, even if it cost us Marvin. His scoring would more than make up for the lost of Marvin. I would keep Chill over Marvin. Chill plays defense and crashes the boards, Marvin just hasn’t displayed the desire to consistently play defense and crash the boards for someone his size.
But with the way TLue has been playing lately, I still stay the Jamal Magliore deal would help us just as well. TLue seems to be really starting regain some of the quickness he lost from his injuries. Man he was huge in the fourth quarter. What we learned from last night is that Gasol what help on offense, but not with defense and rebounds in the Pivot? The Hawks need a big that can block shots and crash the boards.
These guys are still fighting their hearts out, you gotta respect that if you’re a Hawks fan. Hopefully the ownership will do something to help these guys out. I think the Phoenix and Lakers trades were great for both team because of what they gave up to pull the trade off. Neither one of those teams gave away their top talent. I think the Hawks can do the same with the Magliore deal. We should be able to pull that trade off without breaking up the core.
GO BEAT THEM CAVS HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marvin 12 pts, 1 reb,1 assist, Kobe 11 pts 1 reb (10) assists. Come on Marvin, when your shot’s not falling, you have to step it up in other categories. Dont let me down, man.

What about Leandro Barbosa? I believe he would fit our style of play. He’s young, quick, matured under the tutoring of steve nash, can shoot and is a pass first pg. We threw enough money at JJ and he took the bait and jumped ship so why not explore a trade for Barbosa. They may be looking for some cheap insurance in case the Diesel comes up limping to the finish.

Whole lotta love for Josh Smith in 76er land. They desperately need a 4. Horford wants to play the 4, so Josh Smith for a draft pick and Samuel Dalembert, a young center who can run and block shots? Have to have a throw in to make the salaries match up.
