Live, from Seattle …
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
SEATTLE - This isn’t normally my style, but the last blog seemed to be getting a bit long. And I didn’t want any of you to think I wasn’t trying to keep things fresh. So why don’t we try and do a live jammy-jam around here tonight.
The Hawks are up 23-14 on the Sonics and we’re starting the second quarter out here. Marvin Williams is playing like a dude with 100 or more members of circle in the crowd. He’s in attack mode (from everywhere from the free throw line).
But with all the other drama going on (I doubt this is Mike Woodson’s last game as coach if the Hawks don’t hold on, nobody is getting traded in the next hour and 45 minutes and yes, that’s ya boy Blog-Z in the fly blue shirt on the baseline nearest the Hawks’ bench) I figured I’d let all of you with nothing better to do on a Friday night (I’m here too, so I’m not hating, I’m just stating) have at it.

Marvin Williams got his nose busted at some point here in the second quarter and is currently on the bench with a bag of ice pressed against his breather. Not a good look. But the Hawks are rolling without him right him right now. This thing is downright ugly already. We’re going to see what kind of guts both of these teams have. Can the Hawks blow these jokers out? Or can the Sonics come back and play a little ball?

So should we be ready for a Hawks collapse in the second half? I mean this team can’t seem to put a team away until it absolutely has to.

Did Steve call and give Marvin a pep talk before the game? Just kidding Steve. Wow the Sonics can’t buy a bucket and we are taking advantage of that by running. Hopefully Mike “Gregg Knapp” Woodson does not go to the half court game the second half as he is known to do after we get a lead.

Horford slipped a screen in the second quarter and dunked nasty on an alley-oop…..it was a TIVO moment. Let’s go Hawks, win here and win Sunday and get back to a semi-respectable 19-21.

How many layups are we going to give up in the 3rd quarter?

Yeah, I had a little chat with Marvin. The only person that can stop Marvin Willimas is Marvin Williams. He is playing tough tonigght and I will tell him to keep attacking the basket.
I know some people got upset when I compared his shooting to that of Bird. I think he is showing a some of what I saw in him. The Hawks need to run him off more screens and picks. If he continues to develops, he could be awesome and take some pressure off JJ.
I heard about the trade rumors and I did not know what we have to trade. Do you trade Marvin, Joshes. Do we have enough value to trade for a big. The problem may be Woody. He has fail to develop Marvin and Chill games. He need to develop AC.

we look so good cause seattle are so bad. don’t read too much into this win, even tho a win is a win. we have won 5 games on the road, tonight will make six. a team must have a good home record, which we do, but YOU HAVE TO win atleast .500 on the road to be in playoff contention. Wash., Toronto, Indy, and Clev. have good road records and their overall record is better than the hawks.

the hawks were able to win without JJ having to have a great game. Marvin needs to keep the good play up because JJ will be coming around soon.
This off season I hope the Hawks can get their hands on Wilkins. He can some in and give us some great minutes when JJ goes to the bench. Plus the guy can score when he gets hot.

First off, the Seattle cheerleaders were some nice looking women. Props to that. Its hard to get excited about a win against one of the worse teams in the NBA. Once again we struggled in the fourth quarter. We should have had the whole bench in during the fourth quarter but for some reason its hard for us to hold a lead. Good game by Marvin. His jumper was on and for once he was agressive. Ridnour was abusing Anthony Johnson. I like what I saw out of Petro and Collison also. Horford is a beast on the glass. Nice game by Za Za. Please remind me why we have Sheldon Williams again? At this point id keep Za Za and move Sheldon. Maybe some delusional team will think he has some type of talent and take him off our hands. This guy is horrible. Law really struggled tonight. I dont think I have ever seen someone miss so many layups and point blank shots. He has to get in the gym and work. Snapper made a great point tonight. By the way the Seattle play by play guys are great. Snapper jokingly said Marvin walks like an old man and I was laughing hard. Well back to his point. He was talking about how the Hawks were struggling to finish the game off and many people say that is the personality of a young team. He said with a young team you have to give them a personality. Tell them that you are going to play this way every game win or lose . I was like dang can he please call Mike Knapp on the phone and explain this to him. We have no personality and we are to far along in the season not to have one . One minute we are uptempo the next we are halfcourt. Mike Knapp give this team a dang personality.

Sekou,i blogged earlier in the week about a strange scouting report on Acie Law concerning his struggles with of all things, layups. I couldn’t even get as much as a word of feedback from you all. Let me try again. Am I the only one, outside of the scouting report, that notices this guy has a serious problem with layups? Go back to the NCAA tournament when he missed the wide open layup. Look at the game tonight, he missed a wide open ….layup.Don’t get me wrong. i absolutely love the guys passion for the game, but c’mon people. Then he laughs about it? Just watch true bloggers. It is one of the more amazing things I have ever seen a guy struggle with. a basic fundemental of the game.Work on it AL4. Go Hawks!

From Sekou’s recap: Instead of retreating into a passive stance for the second half, as they normally do when playing as well they did early, the Hawks kept the heat on after going into the locker room at halftime with a 52-31 lead.
Good to hear. They never let the Sonics get closer than 9, and anyone who saw the game (thanks League Pass!) knows that the Sonics weren’t in it even when they did get within 10.
They’re playing my lady’s team on Sunday; hopefully they can make it a sweep of the Pacific NW. Great game by Marvin, and a great win.

i don’t watch the hawks and i feel bad for acie. jj and js kill his confidence. i’m still disappointed that we didn’t take mike conley jr. this kid is going to be a star in this league just wait and see. we needed smart unselfish players and m.conley was the complete package. remember, we needed a pg first and a center second. we could have traded our second pick to take aaron gray and glenn davis or traded that pick for this years draft to get a big man. we need 1 owner, magic johnson(gm) and kurt rambis(hc) to turn this franchise around. trade jj and js to indiana for j.oneal and lets pray that eric gordan will stay for his sophmore year so we will have a shot at him in the 2009 nba draft. future team: head coach kurt rambis. starting lineup: (pg)acie law (sg)eric gordon (sf)marvin william (pf)al horford and (c)j.oneal.

Josh Smith will have a quadruple double one night.
Marvin Williams, though greatly improved, is still very, very average. Certainly not what you expect from an overall #2.
A Law has lost the swagger and confidence - due to the coach?

Wow, I am so impressed that we beat the worst team in the league. As for Marvin, how about trying to impress the fans in your team’s hometown. How about more intensity and aggression at Phillips??
Yes, I have been a little disappointed by AC, but we have to give him a bit of a break. First, he is just a rook. Second, he was hurt at the beginning of the year, which has been a killer for other rooks over the years (Marvin’s rookie year). Third, he is playing for a coach who has scared the living crap out of him. AC’s inexperience, coupled with his lack of confidence, is proving to be an issue. Nonetheless, you can’t write someone off early in their career just cause they don’t appear to be a budding superstar.
On the positive, I have actually seen some good things from AC. I like his ball control, pace, and passing ability. When his shot starts to fall, and he gets a little confidence, he is going to be a good player (maybe even very good).
Another good thing for AC is that he seems to be able to physically keep up with both types of opposing point guards. In todays NBA, there are little, quick pgs (CP, Parker) and there are big physical ones (Derron, Chauncey), and mismatches can be exploited. From what I have seen. AC can handle both types; he has the strength and size, and also the quickness.
Ya’ll have to stop making snap judgments on players in their first year or two. That goes for AC, Sheldon, and anyone else. The list of good, and great, players who happened to struggle early in their careers is a long one.
FIRE WOODY!

a win is awin and we’ll take it. it won’t happen during the season. fire mw. get us apoint guard to run the show. one that can hit an open shoot and direct a team. even if we have to trade marvin or jchill. promote larry drew to finish the season. i think the hawks would be a better team.make the playoff’s. we just don’t have the proper direction from the bench or on the floor.

As long as Woodson and Knight run the show you can expect the same this year as every year. Outside looking in when the playoffs start, A good coach would have this team (Very Talented) coached up 7 to 10 games over 500. And with a MO on the way they are going to play against every team every game. A good coach would overcome Kinghts obvious number 1 goal of watching the bottom line on the spirit not losing money on the team first. Rumors? makes me laugh because Knight will not do anything were there is a risk of losing money, this season or any in the future. Truth be told unless the spirit are willing to spend on a team it’ll always be the same.

Sometimes I feel like I personally jinx the Hawks. I come in late, flip channels and come across the game (we don’t get tv games too often around here). Up by 20+, great. They must be playing good tonight so I sit back to see how they look when they’ve got it going. Wrong. They don’t score a point for what seems ten minutes, look as if they just picked up dribbling and ball handling skills within the last few days and play defense like, “was I supposed to slow down that sonic player as he walked to the basket for a layup?”. wth was going on! It was becoming very close to what would have been one of the greatest meltdowns in NBA history. Really, it was only a play or two by the sonics away from being an incredibly depressing loss. This wasn’t so much a good win as it was “surviving a most embarrassing moment” kind of loss. So help me out here. Is this team really that average or can they honestly compete at a playoff level? I don’t get to see them enough to tell. The fourth quarter of this game, they seemed overmatched at every position on the floor by a team with thirteen straight loss’s! I’m trying to see some place for hope but from “deer-in-the-headlight” coaching to too many players on the floor seemingly lacking basic fundamental skills, I just don’t know where this team is going.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? He had one good game, man I would trade Marvin right now for any lottery pick next year. He’s had one good night and now everyone has him as the next tracy mcgrady. What is wrong with you people? He has to go along with Smoove if they both keep throwing up bricks like they do. Neither are a number two option. On the other hand, a Pau Gasol is a number one option. I would do a trade for Marvin right now for Gasol.

I don’t understand the over the top criticism of MWilliams. When you start complaining about how a player walks or how he looks getting the job done, somethings wrong. Marvin has been one of our most consistent producers so far this yr. Answer this question. How many teams have a player that’s the 3rd option that’s averaging about 17PPG, 6RPG and 2APG? Better still, how many teams with players that are 2nd options that can match his production? You’re so busy complaining about what he supposedly isn’t doing, and focusing on irrelelant issues, you have completely lost perspective on what he is doing.
The Hawks have serious problems shooting from the outside, especially from 3pt range. Our lack of effective outside shooters is one of the main reasons we have so many scoring droughts and trouble closing out gms. Marvin is the only consistent and realistic outside scoring option, besides JJ, in the starting lineup. Yet, some of you desperately want him traded and make an already serious problem worse. Besides, if he is so awful, why would another team graciously trade a better player to us for him?
Marvin isn’t even close to being a problem on this team. We need much better PG play, and we definitely need a total committment to an uptempo style of play. I just heard an old classic song that said, “IF YOU WANT TO KEEP HER, YOU HAVE TO DO THE SAME THINGS IT TOOK TO GET HER”. Woodson needs to understand that if you want to keep that lead, you have to continue doing the same things it took to get it. That’s especially true if the DEF hasn’t done anything to stop you. Common sense should tell anyone that it’s better to continue being aggressive and increase a 20pt lead than to become conservative trying and protect it.
Hell, unlike the Suns and Warriors, we play good enough DEF to continue being aggressive and stop teams from coming back. We also have a strong and deep enough bench to pull it off. We could use a stronger engine(PG) and better handling(coaching). However, that should only limit how fast we drive, not stop us from driving fast. I AM SICK AND TIRED OF SEEING US RUN TEAMS OFF THE COURT ONLY TO SEE THEM CONSISTENTLY COME BACK ON US BECAUSE WE BECAME CONSERVATIVE TRYING TO PROTECT A LEAD. OUR POOR PG PLAY AND INCONSISTENT OUTSIDE SHOOTING PREVENTS US FROM BEING AN EFFECTIVE HALF COURT TEAM. WE NEED TO DO WHAT ALL SUCCESSFUL TEAMS DO. THAT IS, FORCE TEAMS TO FOCUS EXTENSIVELY ON OUR STRENGTHS RATHER THAN OUR WEAKNESSES.
One more thing. We may all disagree with each others opinions from time to time, but never lose sight on the fact we all have one thing in common, WE ARE ALL ATLANTA HAWKS FANS AND WE WANT THEM TO SUCCEED.LOL.

Damien Wilkins is nowhere NEAR Marvin Williams in any way despite Marvin being only 21 years old and Damien being near his “prime” with much more experience and age on his side. Marvin Williams is 50 times the player than that bum even at his early age and early phase of his career, never go there again. Ever.

It all depends on marvin and da point guard play. When we won 5 in a row marvin was playing good ball and anthony johnson was on fire. It’s unlikely AJ will come back to that form, but marvin has a chance when he’s aggresive like last night
