Did you get what you wanted for Christmas?

I’ve been waiting on that red light saber since Christmas 1978. Only recently have I started truly comprehend that it won’t be under the tree every year. Coming to grips with such news is tough for me, even now (my big brother warned me back then that I should lower my expectations but I wasn’t hearing it).

But I can’t say I didn’t get what I really wanted for Christmas this year, albeit a few weeks earlier than the actual day. Rich Rodriguez was delivered to the doorstep of fans like me the same way the Hawks’ 14-12 record, four-game win streak and 11-5 run was delivered to all of you.

From where I sit, none of us have much to complain about during this holiday season. All the bellyaching that was done about team chemistry, Joe Johnson’s shooting struggles (he responded with a Player of the Week week) and all the other missteps always highlighted here, seem trivial now don’t they?

Now I’m the first person to caution against floating after wins and being on meltdown alert after every loss, but why not enjoy December Hawks fans? Live it up a little bit. Take a few days and just soak up your good fortune. Take a minute and remember November and December of years past and realize that what you’re seeing doesn’t come along often.

But above all else, make sure you enjoy your family and loved ones this year. I don’t have enough of mine around (thanks to the NBA schedule makers we couldn’t hit the road and apparently some of my people don’t mind snow, ha). We’ll have enough to have a mini-party and then I’ll show up to Philips Arena in time for Wednesday’s game against Indiana, another pleasant surprise to their fans so far this season.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all! I have an interest in basketball but wouldn’t be called a big fan. I read this blog because you guys are entertaining and the blogmaster himself-Mr. Sekou Smith makes it interesting. Thanks SS for making it fun.

Mr. Smith, As a teacher I enjoy reading what the students are doing. The glass is always half-full and creeping upwards. always. The glass doesn’t define the team’s wins and losses it defines the person’s potential and what they do with their life. We, as mortals in this world will never have the statistical capacity or observational acuity to measure that, even on our own children.

I enjoy reading your posts because the joking and gentle scoldings are always a necessary reminder of the larger picture, the one we can barely comprehend for ourselves, much less for anyone else.

The journey is long, the virtues necessary for sustenance on this journey are no slam dunk. It takes endless repetitions to get a sense of spiritual kinesthesis and even then, just when we think “I’ve got it” that’s just when we need to eat humble pie….for Christmas

Merry Christmas to all including the naysayers that are gradually making the “wagon” become a little crowded….but that’s OK…welcome.

It is indeed heartwarming to say the least to see the position that we find ourselves in. However, what is even more encouraging is to see the “spirit” (no pun intended) with which our team has been playing. Also let us not be too “speedy” (there I go again) in pushing them in the playoffs but hope and pray the team remains healthy for the rest of the season. It would be oh so sweet if we could have a full-strength team for the rest of the season. If we can do that I think we have a great shot in making the playoffs.

Oh by the way, let’s give BK and Woody some props. I remember in some offseasons ago lots of so-called fans were calling for Big Ben, Curry and all the free agents that existed. Of course we could use the help inside but we have to give it to BK for assembling these guys and for Woody keeping the faith.

Nuff respect to all!!!

GO HAWKS!!!

On the other hand I still think we are one “sharp-shooter” and some inside help away from being real good. I do hope that Salim can get totally healthy and become the outside threat I know he can be. Our shooting from beyond the arc has been pathetic (31.7%) with Lue and Johnson of the Anthony variety being the best (45 & 41% respectively). If we can have the consistent outside threat hopefully we can stretch defenses some more.

Well let’s hope we can continue the success and continue to improve each and every game.

I’ve already received my Christmas present from all of you. In just one month, these young high flying Hawks have gotten most of you to see the possibilities I’ve seen for some time. There are now sooo many positive attitudes and responses on these blogs. It was only a month ago when these blogs contained soooo many negative attitudes and responses.

The Hawks have had a very successful December, so let’s all have a very successful, safe and happy holiday season. GOOD LUCK TO EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU AND I’LL REJOIN YOU AROUND NEW YEARS EVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone heard of what is going on with the Ownership group feud? There will can be no major moves or signings, as long as it is fractured. Belkin will block anything. What I want for Xmas is for this to be settled, so that the Hawks can move in a definite direction.

Happy X-mas! All I wamt for X-mas is for the Hawks to boot belkins. We can not get to the next level until he is gone. Like one poster stated we need some inside help and a sharpshooter. We could sign a sharpshooter if Belkins got the boot. A sharpshooter will have take this team deep in the play offs.

Yea Sekou, You all to be happy, that cat Rodriguez is hooooooooottttttttt.

Yes my wish is for these guys to continue to play like a team. They ain’t even close to hitting their stride, that’s what scary. This Hawks team has given the ATL a reason to hope again. I have been with the team through the bad times, so this Christmas holiday is truly special to be a Hawks fan. I think if we can stay healthy, we will definitely make the playoff.

Salim is my boy, so I already know what he can do if he’s given the chance play. The guy I want to see get some more PT time besides my boy Salim is Solomon. I just think Solomon could come in and give up some quality minutes in post, if he was given more opportunity to play. Of course he’s going to look awkward trying to blocks shots, you would to if never got a chance to play, but if Woody would work some minutes for Solomon, I’m willing to bet his play would improve.

You get Salim helping out as another scorer, you get Solomon helping out in the post, hey we’re ready to kick some Assssssssssssss.

Merry Christmas Everyone

The Hawks did not put any coal in this year’s Christmas stocking for me — and I hope they send us all an Easter basket of playoff games.

Take care, and start warming up that list of New Year’s resolutions for our hoopsters — my only hope is that they play the last 2/3rds of the season as well as they finished this first third.

Later,

Happy Holidays everybody, Hope santa was good to you this year. Christmas for a hwks fan….. I definitely got what i wanted this year- being above .500 in late December ROX. The last couple of years our record looked similar to Miami or Seattle.

There is’nt much to complain about really… these guys are playing team ball and more important playing with confidence- I actually feel like we have a chance to win every game. In years past when a team hit a run you could just see the guys folding. We are maturing as a team, and it gives me goose bumps -kinda like the proud papa who’s son puts up 20 in a little league game or the tiny gymnist who lands the perfect landing on the uneven bars….. yeah its good to see-I was here during the 13-69 season.

Im really starting to like the young Blazers alot i like the way they play, they have really good front /back court balance and Nate Mcmillan could be coach of the year if they keep playing well - I remember him playing with the Glove in the early 90’s he was a real floor general so its no surprise he turned out to be a great coach…….. I would really like to see what he could have done with our young hawks…

I see why so many people wanted J.jack here he is a good pg and he scores when needed-if we could get him that would be a nice pick up…..

I just heard Craig was out for the season…that really blows…. can we trade for a point now!!! Portland is loaded at PG so maybe we can make a run at J.Jack because AJ cant do it by himself and the jury is still out on Acie….

Good luck tonight guys lets keep racking up wins… HAWKS………….

Cuz,

Just made it back from TTown. “Big Red” and the gang down in Tupelo are kick’n just fine. Got some of Mama’s turkey and dressing so i’m good to go for a while.

I must say that these Hawks are playing some serious ball and turning some heads, even among the X-Box generation. They’re officially legit now. No matter what they do from here on, BK, Woody and the whole gang got my Props. You will not here me criticize this team the rest of this season.

Edo River Those must have been some serious mushrooms in the stuffing is all I can say. Scary thing is, I think I followed you and, scarier than that, found what you said profound yet simple. What are we doing occupying this space and time with roundball.

Could there be something cosmically riviting in it, connecting those who venture to the essence? Would like to think so; on the other hand, it might just be that is fun to kick back and talk ball.

Sekou,

My mother surprised me with a Blackberry Pearl this year, a nice toy for any young college student like myself. It even matches my Josh Smith jersey, which I can now count as a good investment. The fact that I can wear this without getting deserved scrutiny is a testament to the Hawks teamplay these recent weeks. Makes me proud to be a Hawks fan. Unlike most of you, I’ve only been following the Hawks since I moved there after my freshman year in high school - the year before the All-Star game was in the A. Shareef, JTerry, Antoine Walker, Al Harrington, Sheed (for a day) have had stints here during that time, and except for Shareef, those guys have left and had success - 4 NBA finals, 2 championships - elsewhere. At the Hawks’ current level of play, the Championship caliber teams (Pistons, Spurs, Celtics) have been the sole stumbling blocks (We should’ve beat the Pistons that second game of the season. Eh…) We’ve come a MIGHTY long way since 5 years ago. The Hawks aren’t even fully settled in their up-tempo ways, but they’re doing the things needed to win a game.

Having played with the Hawks on NBA 2k8 for 3 years now, the problem has been 3 pointers and rebounding. When I play, Salim gets about 10-15 minutes, getting like 4-6 shots a game. Even that does wonders for stretching the defense, although he’s also a mismatch problem on the defensive end (even on the videogame). I’m hoping Santa Woodson gave Salim 3 three attempts a game. It’ll help…

Thanks Sekou. Your blog as always, is a well-written gift. Enjoy this season, Hawks folk, players, coaches, & fans alike. God Ble$$.

Go Hawks! Show them why we don’t need to trade for Jermaine “In Pain” O’neal today. I expect a victory…

By the way, I found this game over the vacation: www.cyberdunk.com?ref=124089 . Pretty cool. I have a 6’8” 262 PF :). Every time I picture what he might look like, all I see is Shellhead Williams (frightening huh?). Hahaha

really good game for these guys. this one went to jj and the team. the big three were there at the end but chills, horford and shels were just as important if not more so.

ramon even if i scoffed the notion and they would have to beat the mavs in dallas this weekend i will give it up to you for your prognostication of a 16 and 12 record by the end of the year. they will be close but probably wont get there. you go guy, eat my words, though i was hoping for 12 or 13 by the end of the year.

can say the bulls and the heat might be done before the end of the heat. who would have thought it that there would be three pretenders already gone by the new year, the bulls, knicks and the heat.

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN! Another great game by the guys, I really think they’re getting use to winning. JJ played like an All-Star tonight, nothing better than leading the team in scoring and assists!!. Big threes by AJ and looks like Sheldon really wants time on the floor. I can nit-pick about things that I heard that I didn’t like (listening on the radio) but I will leave it alone. Hawks win again, yadda yadda yadda. Now a 3-game road trip…

JJ with a strong 26. JSmoove with 11 in the 4th quarter to finally put the pesky Pacers to rest. Everyone on the floor made a contribution to this win. Acie with a few penetrating buckets. Shelden with a double double. We had some issues getting back on D after a made shot but we held strong and pulled it out. Held the Pacers to 41% shooting, and outrebounded them by 11, 48-37. 5 in a row for the young birds. Thanks Santa…

Thank you Doc. I would’ve thought the Knicks would have been gone. However, I did think the Nets would be playing a lot better than they are.

While it is way to early to make any playoff prediction, “GREAT WIN HAWKS!!!” It’s no way to predict the second half of the season, because if anyone remembers even the Hawks had a chance at the playoff last year before Joe went down. Me I’m just enjoying watching a team grow up before our eyes. In the past that would be some body else team, now it our. If you’re a Hawks fans you gotta love it.

The thing I like is that we are winning games close game, that’ only going help our confidence. Another tremendous team effort by the Hawks. Johnson and Johnson did their thing again tonight. You gotta like Smoove and Marvin late in the game. AH is a stud, this guy relish the opportunity to go up against the best. AJ came through when we needed him, Joe, Yea he was Joe. Chill was strong and so was Shelden.

The thing that really impress was Woodson post game comments, I thought they was right on point. This a different team, you would have to blind not to notice that.

Hey I know this up coming schedule want be easy, but I will stand by this team on their good and bad nights. I think the game in Dallas will set the tone the next four games, if we beat Dallas, I say we go 3 and 1 over the next four, if we loose, we go no worst than 2 and 2.

This team want go away Hawks fan. Get on the wagon before it gets full.

First of all, great win against the pacers. These are the types of games that are enjoyable. The team plays good offense to produce more than 100 points and the team plays good defense.

The Good: JJ and Shelden provide the double doubles and 6 players score in double figures. JJ, Marvin, Al and Shelden produce entries in every positive offensive/defensive category. 5 different players blocked shots. The guards are now consistently getting rebounds. The team shot 86% from the free throw line. The team out rebounded another taller team. Woodson using his bench and allowing JS to finish strong down the stretch.

The bad: nothing worth mentioning.

By doc

December 26, 2007 11:49 PM | Link to this

yeah ramon the nets, sixers, heat, bulls and knicks are all taking the gas early and not showing much rebound right now. one or two of those teams might make a comeback but they just dont seem to have much heart or gel to stick together for the stretch run. that leaves only 3 or 4 teams to try and outrun for the playoffs, two the cavs and the wiz look beatable and the bobcats just look bad.

by attrition this might be our year but continuing to win will make it easier.

paxson, is not looking very smart now having dumped chandler for big (now small) ben wallace and overlooking roy for thomas. they are remarking how young they are (seven of eleven below 25) talking about potential and then mentioning how slow deng is on defense. not looking like a very good team with guards overmatched and size in the post now suspect. their choice of coach will tell how interested they are in winning or playing the lottery wheel again. i would hate to think how they would look with gordon, henrich and roy as their rotation for their lead guards and chandler down under protecting deng and noah. would not have been pretty.

I like the way the Hawks are playing right now. They are walking the ball up less and pushing the ball up the court. Even Zaza lead a break. AJ is doing a great job of getting into the break and getting into the lane. I like Jsmooth’s post game too. Don’t be suprised if he makes the all-star team this year.

Here are a couple of facts on the season:

The Hawks are 9-3 without Tyron Lue

There are are only 16 teams with winning records in the NBA.

Doc, what if the bulls had just held onto aldridge and not traded him for thomas. But you’re right, golden boy paxson has made some questionable moves lately and probably cost skiles his job. Funny how just a year or so ago folks were saying that paxson’s bulls were the model for rebuilding a franchise and billy was catching the heat. Now the hawks are the bulls and the bulls are the hawks! LOL!

Good effort last night from the Bench Mob. Chillz and Sheldon did a solid job with guyz in foul trouble.

Acie played well last night in limited minutes. If he continues to develope TLUE might not see the floor for a while. That would be fine by me -he dribbles to much and slows down the offense. I believe he may be the reason we took so many last minute shots the first few games. ZAZA- Should have asked Santa for some DEFENSE. He is a serious liability….. I think Shellz should be the first big off the bench -he put up a double double last night he plays solid D and rebounds….Things that Z refuses to do. I dont think we need to do any trades just yet, we are playing well and we have a deep bench.

If there is going to be a trade by the deadline I think it needs to be for a PG if not I say we try to pick up Calderon and Diop in the off season.

Well said roan st. Hey, I went to the game last night and I am still pumped. They played so much better than when I saw them lose at home to the Hornets last month. What a difference a few wins, healthy bodies and confidence boost will make! Last night the defensive intensity and hustle were out of sight. I hadn’t seen a Hawks team play that tough in quite some time. They are starting to remind me a little of the way the Pistons play D. (Could there be any reason?)

The Pacers came to play last night as well. This was a cup check kind of game, and believe me the Hawks showed that they were strapped up and ready to go. J Chill was amazing on defense doing the little things to help the team. Acie has not even scratched the surface of his potential. At times he seems able to get to the rim when there isn’t any lane open. When Al gets his scoring thing down, he’s really going to be a force. He is a beast as it is. He and Smoove make a great inside duo on D. Enough cannot be said about AJ and JJ. Their leadership is amazing. I also have to say that I have been one of the Biggest Shelden critics on this blog. He came through last night holding his own, doing what needed to be done.

If the Hawks ever recognize that they can isolate other players besides JJ, it’s going to be lights out. Smoove had such an advantage when matched up against Dunleavy, it was insane. And he only used him one time. Quicker recognition of and a few more offensive sets against a zone defense will also prove valuable. It definitely slowed the game down a bit. Nonetheless, the Hawks recognized that as well.

It was a good middleweight fight. Glad the Hawks came out on the winning side of this one - very entertaining to watch. Let’s go Hawks!

Hope all of you enjoyed your Christmas and I’m looking forward to the New Year! Last night was awesome as I got to see the Hawks win again.

However, what really struck me was how well they are playing as a unit! I have give credit where credit is due, after all, this is the holidays. Mike Woodson has everyone playing together, and the Hawks are 13-6 since AJ took over the reigns at the point. This will work as Acie can learn hwo to lead an NBA offense instead of getting thrown in the fire.

Already this team has had two Eastern Conference players of the week and Horford is getting rave reviews for his game in the paint.

Slowly but surely, folks, slowly but surely…..Let the rest of the league keep downplaying the Hawks, we all see what’s going on here!

roan, moral of the story, nothing is permanent and how quickly they rise can be as quickly as they fall. no absolutes. interesting fodder to chat about, enjoy your insights.

hawk-4-life glad to hear from you, we got em all over the world reporting in cool, most recently dave from england. you were in my thoughts for the widespread wish for the holidays. kind of amazing how far we stretch because of this blog!

people can talk all the want about growth and confidence but a lot of this is learning how to win. like g says last night wasnt pretty but it worked. my belief at this stage of the game it is more about trust in each other. these guys are working together knowing that if they give up the ball they still have a chance to get it back maybe in a better spot. HUGE!

got some more games to play i guess before the coronation.

Hello all and congrats to our Hawks on their 5th straight victory. Most of you have noticed ‘how’ we are winning these games of late, so no need to pounce on that. I would like to highlight a few things.

1) For December, AJ has been the key to the Hawks success. To run an up-tempo offense, you need a point that pushes the ball and makes quick passes…he’s been doing that.

2) Did anyone notice the 3-4 post moves utilized by Smooth last night? I have seen fewer jumpshots and more post moves or drives to the basket by this kid over the last 5-6 games. He’s also done a decent job dishing the rock once the defense reacts. I was a bit skeptical about giving him big bucks, but now I say…PAY THE KID!

3) ZaZa is slowly becoming the designated “trade-him” player of the year. Could someone combine him and Sheldon to make one player that scores, rebounds, and plays a small amount of defense? Otherwise, trade him and give Solo his minutes.

4) Acie will be just fine. The rebirth (or birth) of AJ and injuries have limited his time on the floor. No TO’s last night and a couple of sweet moves to the basket are signs of his development.

5) Hawks shouldn’t be looking to trade right now. Non-playoff, reorganizing teams are more willing to part with quality players closer to the trade deadline in exchange for expiring contracts and low salaries.

I went to the game last night with my sons and had a GREAT time. Was a little disappointed with the size of the crowd but who am I to say what other folks should do with their money. That said, a few quick observations:

-Overall, thought the ball movement was great. I really liked how AJ managed the game, always pushing the ball down after a defensive rebound, the getting everyone involved. Is there a reason to assume he can’t continue playing like this?

-Was somewhat disappointed with ZaZa. He seemed to want to ‘take it’ whenever he got the ball on the offensive end, to the point that he even forced bad shots. He seems more suited for the half court game, which we will obviously play if we make it to the playoffs.

-I understand JJ is the star but would have like to see him dish even more when the doubles come. Again, stars normally handle the ball in the 4th quarter but it seems to slow everyone else down and cause them to watch.

I like the way the team is playing and hope they can keep it up.

‘Tis the season for agreeing.

Seriously. I have to agree with Doc and Roan St on Senor Paxson and has moves. Suddenly he doesn’t look so smart and Billy Knight doesn’t look so dumb. Well, not as dumb as in the past. Gotta say, Skiles was a demanding coach but probably not ever a bad one. Still, you have to wonder if his role was limited from the beginning. Maybe he was the guy they needed to whip some things into shape. Maybe now it’s time for someone else. But, only Paxson can be blamed for giving up a sure-fire scoring center AND a sure-fire defensive center…who can actually score a bit now.

But back to the Hawks. It’s clear that the confidence, trust, and camaraderie is there. You had to wonder when it would come together or if it would. Well, apparently it has, which is GREAT.

I also agree with Reese. What a win against Indiana. I started to fuss a bit about rebounding from our usual suspects and then I saw from the boxscore that there was a great deal of improvement in team rebounding. We outrebounded them 48-37. ‘Nuff said. I see that Horford’s rebounding has taken a bit of a dip, but his offense is coming up. Keep giving the guy touches, he’s going to get you 12-15 a night easily when it’s all said and done. Maybe more. And his rebounding will come back up too. Say what you want, but NOBODY is eating his lunch out there. He’s the only one who can take himself out of a game by getting a few too many fouls.

Two things I’m liking: better play in half court sets. Who would’ve thought it would happen? And…amazing. AJ really is making Billy look good about now. He spends a second round pick to get a veteran point who is now doing exactly what we have BEEN needing: leadership on both sides of the court, steadily. Almost makes up for the lost chunk of money spent on the guy who was supposed to deliver this, but didn’t.

The bench is really playing like a bench should. We should see more of the Shelden sightings. Acie seems to be handling his bench role well. I was wondering how that might go, especially after he seemed like the clear choice for starter some time ago. It’s usually better this way anyhow. Funny how suddenly Zaza fades into the background. Only, it hasn’t been all that sudden. I don’t want to bash on the guy, but we’ve all been saying that he’s not the ideal starter at center. Odd how a rookie PF is though, huh? He likely won’t be happy with his diminished role for very long. As much as people don’t want to hear it, he could go. But with our shortage of viable bigs, is that truly wise? If big Al goes down, we are going to have problems regardless of who’s on the bench.

And how do we get that shooter we need? Oh, and keep giving Mario West minutes. We NEED that guy. He’s a bit of a precious stone in the rough. Not a diamond, but not a regular rock by any stretch of the imagination. Wonder what keeps Solomon on the bench. Does he have a future here? So many questions…

But enjoying the heck out of the wins…yeah baby, GO HAWKS!

I believe Mario West is going to develop into a great player. I think he’s going to be like Raja Bell, but with a better all around offensive game. He is a big, strong, and fast guard who can take the ball to the hoop. I’ve seen him shoot the ball, and believe that his shot will get better with more attempts. Right now, though, we just need him to play good D, but it’d be great if he could consistently hit open threes. He’d be extremely valuable to our team if he added a 3 point shot to his game.

Ray, I actually think Horford’s rebounding has went down becuase other guys are stepping up in that department. Horford set the tone early with his rebounding tenacity and his teammates are catching on. Shells had ten boards last night and chills first game back from injury he had 11 against Miami. J smoove has also had some big rebounding games lately. I think the rook has inspired his teamates.

G money, I have also been a huge critic of shelly and have even offered him up as a throw in in trade proposals. But I will have to admit that he is showing some real value coming off the bench lately. And in my opinion right now he deserves more playing time than ZAZA. Shells knocked down some nice jumpers last night and did a great job on the boards.

We need to keep Zaza. Fact of the matter is he is the best player we have above the height of 6’10. And he has given us some good points off the bench. Plus if we lose Josh Smith to free agency, we can plug Horford at pf and Zaza at center, thats a SOLID starting front court.

I would like Law to get more time. I dont see AJ keeping this up.

My biggest concern is JJ’s minutes. Dude is going to wear down if we dont rest him now. We MUST get him under 40 minutes a game or he will be gassed in april. Run Salim out there, because we’ll also need a 3-point shooter in the playoffs. Or go with Law-Chills-Marvin/Smoove-Shelden-Zaza. I think we can generate enough offense now with JJ on the bench.

Its great to see our DEPTH. For all the criticism I’ve hurled at Knightmare, he has drafted good players. Not the best possible players he could have taken at the time (Roy, Deng, Paul) but good players nonetheless, and he did outstanding this past draft.

Lets keep winning. 3rd in the east is a very viable goal behind Boston and Detroit. That would leave us against Indiana or Toronto as of today. Personally I much rather face Indiana. No one on the Pacers scares me like Bosh.

Great job Hawks.

As far as Chicago goes, Skiles was going to be able to take that team only so far. They didn’t have enough interior offense to make a championship run against the likes of Boston or Detroit. Paxson’s moves were always questionable as he never got the low post help to balance out the offense. Having Nocioni come off the bench is absurd.

Oh, I haven’t seen anyone crying that the Hawks didn’t draft Deng… oh well on to better stuff, great job by that Hawks bench last night. If Shelden can continue to provide this kind of consistency off the bench, then it will be easier to rest Al Horford for stretches in the game. He has the kind of game where he could average 15-16 points easy.

The rest of the team is doing a great job of rebounding so he doesn’t have to carry the load himself. Let’s hope they can pull out another one against Dallas.

Seems like most of us have ZaZa on the ropes lately. I think the up-tempo/semi fast break/half-court movement style of basketball isn’t his cup of tea. Insurance is only good if you need to use it, otherwise, it’s just a waste.

By doc

zaza is fine and he will be needed down the road. he isnt shaq of old or dwight, bosh, etc but he is capable of dutiful minutes when needed. it is going to be just like tim thomas and kurt thomas were with the suns who will be wondering why they got rid of them when crunch time comes like it did against the lakers and bynum et. al. the other night.

BW insurance is real important whether it is health, auto, or basketball. zaza is figuring out his new role and it will take time. remember, he is also coming back from a significant knee and ankle injury as well.

Z’s offensive production “could” play a key role down the stretch, but our biggest need will be low post defense and rebounding come playoff time (assuming we make it). Yes, ZaZa is above 6-10, but he will never pull down 8-10 rbs/game, block 2-3 shots/game, and keep the opposing bigs off Smith and Horford. That’s what we need out of our big guy. His recent rash of turnovers and slow play could certainly be attributed to getting back in shape, but how much are we going to expect down the road. He’s never been a defensive factor, so is he going to play solid minutes against Sheed, Howard, and Bosh come playoff time? Or are we going to dig up LoWright to do his job? I would trade his offensive production for a defensive oriented guy his size anyday.

Great win last night. I said a few blogs ago that it would be nice to pull of winning streak of 5 games or so and low and behold they have done it. I like what AJ is bringing. He was very out of shape last season and now i think he is very comfortable with his role and has gotten into better shape. I would love to get another guard in here to give JJ a breather every once in a while so he wont wear down. I like Lue because he has hit some game winning shots and wanted to stay here and help this team turn it around but we have to keep him on the bench. He pounds the ball too much and is injury prone. I like the guy but keep him off the court.

It seems like nearly everyone is seeing the same picture. This is pretty amazing given all of the different scenarios that used to swirl around regarding what the Hawks needed or needed to do in the past.

If this continues, BK will be pressed to shore up the bench for the play-offs. That could be very interesting. The only guy I like right now isn’t even in the league, and who knows if he can/would come back - PJ Brown. Otherwise, I’d keep what we have unless there is some obviously better player and better fit for the team than some of the guys we have now.

I’m a bit up in the air about Dallas. I think that we actually have the juice to compete. I just don’t know that we have the energy and focus to beat these guys in their house. But we shall see.

a winnin’ streak!!!!! man, i’m lovin’ it!!!! TEAM BALL…PERIOD!!!!

as most of you cats know i’m a big ACIE supporter and definitely look forward to him gettin’ his groove back and providin’ some help in the back court. the cat definitely has the talent, no doubt!!

as people talk about trades and the need for another shooter i think ACIE is the key to this also. tho i’ve never been a SALIM fan (think is rep is far bigger than the talent level he’s shown in the pros) i do think IF he is too provide the needed scorin’ from the bench and relief for JJ at the 2 then ACIE or AJ will be his ticket to playin’ time.

i said back in the summer that AJ would provide the needed size in the backcourt to allow SALIM to play the 2, his natural position. well since AJ and ACIE roles have been swapped since the start of the season, ACIE now holds the key to SALIM seein’ the court. ‘cause regardless of who it is, SIZE is needed when SALIM is on the court. so when ACIE finds his groove and can provide the solid and steady minutes when relievin’ AJ, then he can provide the size in the backcourt that SALIM needs. or AJ can provide it, tho i WOULD NOT mess with the chemistry that the 1st unit has with AJ runnin’ the point. even tho, i think AJ would provide what would be needed more with the 2nd unit ‘cause of his experience and leadership. whereas havin’ ACIE run with the 1st unit allows him more room for error ‘cause of all the talent that the other 4 players provide.

but again, i would not mess with the chemistry that’s in place right now no matter how much i’d be tempted to. but as it stands right now ACIE is the key to SALIM gettin’ PT…IMHO. so find your groove again rook!!!!!! GO YOUNG GUNS!!!!

I mus write, I think we are fine at PG. AJ has done a very good job of running the point. Acie could learn a lot from him. We have a good PG in AJ that is tutoring our PG of the future in AC. Therefore we are stack at PG when you factor in JJ, and West at PG.

Now what we need the most is another scorer. Last night we had a 10 point lead but the other team came back. We had them on the ropes several times but we could not deliever the knock out punch.

I feel that a person like Mr. Rush can help us bury the other team by providing us the scoring punch that we need. This will let JJ get some rest without having to be rushed back in the game. A good scorer off the bench will help this team now.

I feel that we can address the big man issue in the off season. The Hawks may have the luxury of going two ways with a big man. If there is a big man that can play D, and score, they can go that route. But if there are just big man that can only play D, rebound and block shots, they can go that way.

g we have been promoting brown for a while here and still no response nor respect from bk. how can he ignore such salient help? p j would be the icing on the cake as there are no sharp shooters out there. got to wonder if he didnt provide a little glue last year in chi town while thomas grew into the role. he is a class act and wouldnt be the end all but a tremendous support character for the long haul, doing what it takes to make a run IN the playoffs not TO the playoffs.

yes, he might be content to do nothing or he might be content to save up and go with the best bidder for some notoriety. also think the suns are very deficient in this area and should be pulling out all the stops for a guy that would be complimentary and not too costly as they are in severe cost containment now that they have thrown so much money diaw’s way instead of keeping jj who is looking more and more like the bargain that so many thought he was and had to stay the course while our brethren tore into us. heh heh, you know who you are.

G Money, you know how it is. When things are going rough, everyone has ideas as to how to improve them. God forbid we go into a major relapse…you’ll see the same thing again. Human nature I guess. Look how many people were saying last year how bad of a head case Josh Smith is and how he’s not worth 40 million, much less 50 or 55. Now people say if we trade him (if it actually comes to that) the world will end. Funny how nobody’s saying anything about his attitude NOW. I recall being just one of a handful who said his attitude wouldn’t be a problem. How quickly we forget. Now I’ll sit back and wait for Doc to fire some other “I told you so” at me having to do with another subject entirely….heh heh.

Speaking of ol’ Doc, I notice you are STILL digging up that ol’ bone called “the Diaw trade”. Whatsamatter Doc, you miss Ando coming here that badly? Of course, he’s not the only target of your friendly darts, he he! But that’s one you can’t throw at me, I know that…LOL.

Doc Ando probably just don’t want to be a party pooper is all. Not at all sure that what has been happening would change his mind one bit, unless the kid were to develop a consistent j aka MW.

Ando might even ask, “How is this team gonna get better after the season when it gave that pick away to the Suns unnecessarily?” He’s just too much of a gentleman.

And, yet there are still some insist that, having bought the pot by paying JJ a sum the Suns would never had matched, mortgaging the future was a good move. gotta love that Andoman, what a gentleman. NBL

Be careful doc, this team keeps showing well and I just might get one of them NBA passes and then I’ll actually know what the heck I’m talking about relative to the Hawks.

By G Money

December 27, 2007 7:00 PM | Link to this

Hey guys, I hear you talking about Ando, but if we drink his Kool-Aid then the Hawks are one step away from a disastrous season because JS, MW, and AH are not able to play together and cannot match up with Jermaine O’Neal, Jamison and Haywood, or Howard and Lewis, not to mention ONeal and Wade. It just isn’t possible with his logic. We have too many forwards and not enough other parts.

I think we say this all tentatively, but being above .500 at this juncture makes us all giddy and is worthy of celebration given how starved we’ve been over the last few years. I’ll stick by what I’ve said all along - the game of basketball with the new rules (written and unwritten) allow the Hawks a rare opportunity to play THEIR style and be competitive.

Could we be contenders? I don’t think any of us think that the upside is that high at this point. But I’m so happy to be in the middle of the pack and have a product on the floor that I can be proud of that I’ll take that right now. The question for me starts to become, “How can you do without, JChill, JSmoove, JJ, AJ, Acie, AH and MW?” It’s almost as if they are the core that BK must build around for at least the next couple, three years. AJ is the only journeyman of the bunch. The rest still have untold upside potential.

I’m going with the hand dealt. It ain’t a royal flush like the Celtics, but I believe that we can make some noise, fill some seats and have enough money come this summer to resign the core and go after an important piece that takes us over the top.

IMUS, where did you see PJ? If he’s anywhere in the ATL, we could all track him down and plead our case. He’s gotta be watching the tube and seeing what’s up :-) By the way, I hope your hand continues to itch all the way to Saturday night. Honestly, I will be the first to say that I worry that we do live in a Matrix-like dream world and that we might wake up and find out that the Hawks are really SOSDD.

Doc, I feel you on the Diaw deal. If anyone ever stole some money it was Boris. I pity the Suns who are now hamstrung up the wazoo. I understand if a player is injured and can’t go - that’s life. But if a player won’t work hard to reach his potential or only does so in contract years, I’ve got a huge problem with that.

My prediction…if the Hawks lose on Saturday, Ando shows up and says I told you so. If we win, we won’t hear from him til the New Year (he-he).

By The Flash

December 27, 2007 7:45 PM | Link to this

I think that Diaw has problems playing his game when Amare is on the floor, which is a huge problem for him.

Diaw’s best game is hanging near the baseline, reading the passing lanes, predicting where the ball will be and when, moving to a spot, catching, and one touching to players making reads both he and they see. I was hopeful that Amare’s foray into the soccer world this summer, yeap, he reported that Nash and Barbosa got him to do soccer training, would build some awareness in him of the inside out play of attackers in soccer playing with their backs to the goal, receiving penetrating passes with a touch that pushes the ball outward from the goal with direction, and then picking out an exterior player to play the ball to as the defense reacts.

Amare has not picked up on that part of the game and often occupies, or is close to occupying the spots to which Diaw would normally like to move to make his receptions. In that respect, both guys see the game well from a receiver’s point of view. Amare clearly takes precidence.

Thus, the most effective part of Diaw’s game has been taken from him. He is a terrific pivot for the Suns’ offense minus Amare. With Amare, he finds himself almost as lost or useless as he was here.

He would do well with the Lakers.

It’s great to see all the excitement right now. Wednesday’s game sounded great on the internet. (Holiday obligations trump one game for a season ticket holder.)

I love reading that BK is not as bad as ya thought and Paxson ins’t the NBA Bellichek.

The Dallas game will be a bigger test with Josh Howard in the lineup. The Hawks should be competitive, but winning on the road is tough in the NBA.

Sekou’s article highlights the Hawks true advantage this year, which is oddly similar to the improvement in Lakerland…the versatility and strength of the bench.

I get PJ Brown’s contentment with retirement, but I bet he’d think twice if the call came from Boston, San Antonio, Phoenix, or Detroit.

Let’s enjoy the ride, one game at a time!

Happy Holidays!

Doc, the rum’s finally gone. I feel like a certain pirate right now, inquiring as to why there’s no more rum. But hell, I drink so infrequently that it really doesn’t matter to me. Fun during the holidays though…

The Andoman always has plenty to say about Hawks ball and b-ball in general. You’d be surprised what he does have to say. We’ve had several conversation during games, before games, after games, even when there are no Hawks games on. He’s the ultimate hoops junkie, I’m telling you. And believe me, he’s enjoying the winning as much as any of us. And like some of us, he hasn’t forgotten that we are winning in spite of some things.

A few simple facts: our ownership is still very much in doubt. These guys are running on the cheap and don’t even own the team for certain. How and IF they pay for guys like Josh Smith will still determine a lot. If they don’t have the money, we may see something very ugly, like Josh Smith getting dealt in a sign and trade. A sign-and-trade that does not make us better, at that…Sure, we’ve got a great core of guys. But what happens when you have to start paying them more and you don’t have the money? Good question, huh.

Another fact: we’re going to have to make moves just like any other team. Sometimes that means giving up someone you like and are used to having around. Sentimentality exists in all of us, but leave us not forget this is a business first and foremost.

I’m not trying to rain on this parade, because I’m dancing in the middle of it like the rest of you. But you really do have to keep an eye on the future while enjoying the present. Guys like Ando ask the tough questions like: “Assuming you are able to pay and keep this squad, will it be enough to get you to the playoffs each year?” and “Nobody likes getting stuck in the first round of the playoffs every year. How do we get to the second round?” And that’s just the beginning. For now though, the obvious goal is to make the playoffs and get a taste of the postseason. And if things are going the way they are now, I don’t see that being a problem!

What’s up guys, gotta chime in on ZaZA. Now everybody knows that Salim is my boy and want him to be that other outside threat we need. But on the subject ZaZA I think guys are off base.

Please appreciate Zaza for the player he is, and don’t expect him to be this athletic Big that dominate the post, that’s not his MO. He’s not a big time shot blocker, we all know that, but unless you’re blind, you gotta see that this guy has been playing his best basketball since he game back from injury. The effort is there and he’s making a contribution when he comes in the game. No way am I saying he should be the starter but we need his big body in the post. This guy is what 23 going 24 so he’s still learning the game too.

Guys you’ll know I’m team first, so I gotta stand by the Z man. Like someone said, we loose AH and there is a big void in the post, then we are back where we were last year. That’s why it really disturbs me that Woody doesn’t get Solomon more playing time. In terms of dept, that where we are the most vulnerable. Do forget Z is bargain. If get someone else, you gotta give of something of value.

I get just as frustrated as anyone else when he’s flopping and taking bad shots, but lately he’s been playing a little tougher when he comes in the game. CIP, the Miami game Z came in and gave us some quality minutes battling Shaq. Zaza is a good option to have coming off the bench. We will need every player on this team if we have any hope of making the playoff. He’s making a conscious effort to try to rebound more and play defense. Both he and Shelden have stepped there game up. The one intangible everyone over look about Z is for a Big he can put the ball on the floor and get to the free throw line. It really just depends on the team we are playing. But throw the guy under the bus.

Another big Shout out to Woody and the coaching for a helluva job getting these guys to play lock down defense and coming up with a better offensive scheme.

I WISH ALL MY FELLOW BLOGGERS A GREAT NEW YEAR!!!!!

Mike, I am trying to keep it positive related to Pachulia, but I was disappointed that I didn’t see improvement from last year to this year with ZaZa. He did his thing in Europe, but he didn’t work on defense, the one thing Woody is preaching. Nor did he come back with a long range jumper like Okur.

He becomes a liability at times because he seems slow of foot or just slow to react - i.e. can’t defend. He’s playing harder now because he sees everyone else is. Nonetheless, his contributions need to go up (and maybe they will when he’s fully healthy).

And while people call him a bargain, he’s not a bargain if you can’t use him. JSmoove and JChill are bargains. MWest and AH are bargains. AJ may turn out to be the ultimate bargain. These guys all make less than ZaZa and are bringing it when they step on the court. ZaZa would have to be a big time starter to be a bargain on THIS team. For other teams, $4 mil is not that much. But on this team, with the small budget that they are working with, ZaZa is almost overpaid. Nonetheless, I’m not throwing him under the bus. I just hope that he gets on it and makes big strides this year. Perhaps he’s the go to guy for the 2nd team. That may make sense.

I am more than excited about how the future looks for the Hawks team. and while us real fans sit on the front seat or first class, we’ll let the bandwagoners fight it out in the back and in coach for a while. thats ok, at least they did show. i was at the Indiana game (cus thats what us real fans do, actually go to the games, hint for the band wagoners who wanna upgrade to first class) and i noticed that we are really doing a great job against the premier big men in the league. O’neal got his 16 and 10 but he wasnt dominate neither was Shaq or Dwight Howard. Limiting the big men down low and creating turnovers has proven to be the equation for success as of late. I need for Josh Smith to continue to attack the basket, and for Horford to stay aggresive on he boards, he’s a monster. Marvin has come around and i will continue to argue that Joe is the purest scorer not named Kobe Bryant in the league.

I hope Law is learning something from AJ. If he emerges, we might be better than an 8th seed. Hey….it could happen…..I think AJ is the difference right now. I remember when the Suns were just an ok team before they got Nash. If Law can step up or if somehow AJ continues this torrid pace watch out!!

G Money from what I saw against the Wizzards, your perspective seems incisive. I too was disappointed with what I saw, and would think that Shelden should be getting more of Z’s minutes.

I wonder whether the overall lack of clarity I see in this team about the place of the inside game does not contribute to Z’s seeming “lostness” when he touches it. I believe that especially when he plays with the first unit, his first and primary job is to set screens, and when he touches it to give it up, principally to JJ. If that is so, then Z’s play might be a product of Woody’s offensive concepts.

While the offensive concepts I saw involved much less one-man play by JJ, there still was too much of the he’s-the-man thing going on before cruch time (4th quarter) when, what the heck, if you got it, use it.

Until I see this team commit to playing through the bigs and not using them as pawns in the offense I am unable to evaluate the ability of Z and SW to contribute meaningfully on the offensive end. This, it seems to me is crucial for further development.

The only other option, it seems to me, is the one that Ando has long stood behind—get a big with sufficient stature paid sufficient bucks that you must utilize his talents. I am not convinced that even that will work unless the coach buys into a different offensive scheme.

I see signs of this (I believe it to be the Drew influence, by the way) but still too much fence sitting about this important aspect of the game. It is this ambivolence, and not the interior personnel, that I believe is the first order of business.

Remove the ambivolence, then we will be able to evaluate what Z and Shelden are capable of on offense. And, like I always say, let a guy contribute on offense, his ability to make defensive plays improves dramatically.

GMoney I’m feeling on Z man bro. I guess my point is the Hawks of all team can ill afford to give up on Zaza. We are just too thin at the Pivot position. I think Acie and Z man are still recovering from injuries.

I agree with everyone that if you give this team a legit Big in the post, they instantly become one of the top teams in the East. But we were all saying what an accomplishment it would be just to make to the playoff, with all the misery we’ve endured as hawks fans. This current Hawks team is positioned to do just that. Do we need more out Z, dam right, do we need help in the post, HELL Yes!!!!!

I say let the guys on the team dictate the next move for BK. Like Big Ray said, at some point we are going to have to part with some of this young talent. If Shelden keep stepping up the way he has then Zaza will probably be on the bench any way.

Hey two guys that will probably never get a chance in Woody system are Salim and Solomon. But if they net us a trade that improves the team than I’m all for it. That’s all I’m saying about Z. Instead rushing to make a trade for the sake of making a trade, let’s go with the guys we have, and let the other teams come to us. If we are going to go with the guys we have than that includes the Z Man.

I think PJ Brown would be an excellent pick-up for the Hawks, but if you’re the Hawks what can you offer him. Either max dollars or Championship, let’s be real guys, we’re talking about the CHEAP @SS SPIRIT, and a team that hasn’t been to the playoff in what forever. If this team keeps playing the way it’s been playing, everyone will have to come to us for our expiring contract and young talent.

These guys are just starting to define their roles and develop team chemistry. Lets see happen leading up to the All-Star break, should be fun!!!

Mike, I feel you on Z. I just would like to see his role defined a little more clearly for him as well. He has some talents that could be helpful. He’s just gotta be able to defend at least his man if not offer some help defense in the paint when the opposing guards get loose. As for making any moves…we don’t have to do a thing right now. I’m tickled pink and tltally satisfied…so satisfied that I was trying to find some extra money for more Hawks tickets.

Flash, I think you’re on point about the offense. It seems to still be a work in progress. The defense was amazing against the Pacers. If we play like that nearly every night, we’ve got a chance to win nearly every game. Now it’s time to work on some things offensively -team play and individual play.

Yea GMoney we’re in agreement bro. The thing I want more than anything is for us not to give Phoenix a lottery pick, if we do that than that means we made the playoff. I like this young Hawks team a lot. Even the CHEAP @SS SPIRIT is smart enough to know that this is not a finish product. There are more parts to be added to this team.

Unless it’s Jiop, Bynum, Camby, Chandler, Curry, Alridge, and maybe Nene than I gotta just play things out and wait and try to do a sign and trade, or FA deal. You better believe if I’m talking Chill, than its sign and trade or first round pick, hey other than that I pay Chill and Smoove and take my chances.

Here is a better idea, why not give this kid Solomon Jones a chance. He always plays his heart out whether it’s two seconds or two minutes on the clock. Never backs down, a ferocious defender around the goal, great attitude never complains. No he’s not a finish product, kid needs work, but in term of a team guy, he’s the ultimate team player, this is the kind of kid I don’t mind investing time in. If I’m Woody I gotta ask myself, how I can continue to ignore this kid. I gotta either move this kid to a development league so he can play and develop his game, or work him into my rotation. Thus far Woody has done neither. It would be shame to watch this guy waste away on the bench for another season.

I’m sure there is a couple of quality Bigs I forgot to mention. Most team that have quality Bigs want give them up any way, so you might well develop the talent you have. When you look at what Cleveland get out of there Bigs, it’s easy to make a case for a Zaza, Shelden or Solomon. At some point our rook sensation AH will hit a wall, when that happens we’ll need all the help we can get in the post to help him get through that period.

First off I want to say Keep Lue On The Bench. As far as Solomon goes, I wish we would send the kid to the NBDL so he can at least get some minutes and improve his very raw game.

I got what I desperately wanted- something good to cheer for to take my mind off the mess that is the Falcons. THANK YOU HAWKS!! Watching these guys grow up FINALLY has been a pleasure. Marvin Williams has awaken from his slumber…J-Chill is putting in work…and even Sheldon Williams, who I had lost hope for is putting in quality minutes. I still think Big Al Horford has alot more to do with this than he is being given credit for. Being a Gator fan, I’ve watched every one of their b-ball games the last few years and I swear this Hawk’s team is starting to look like those Gators. The one thing I kept clamoring about when we got Horford is that he will quietly make his team better by making that “extra pass” and team play. He brought that mentality with from Florida and through his own play and work ethic has inspired his new tammates to do the same. Now I’m seeing Marvin make that pass, J-Chill, hell even Josh Smith is taking to it. Look, when you have six or seven 6’8 guys that are young, atheltic, AND willing to “make that extra pass”, you’re team can’t help but be better. We still need another point guard for depth (no knock on Acie Law- he is the future, but pg is no joke for ANY rook!) and maybe a couple of other things, but man when considering where the hawks have been for the last ten years, this is heaven right now. I’ve bragging to my co-workers since the draft that Horford was the start of something new for the Hawks and I practically “guaranteed” they were going to be much improved and FOR ONCE, at least for a month, an Atlanta team didn’t make me look like an idiot. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I think it is interesting that the “Fraud” is contemplating whether or not to have surgery. I guess Speedy’s plan is to delay the surgery well into the spring, so that he can say that he is still rehabbing his knee when next season rolls around. The Hawks should give him an ultimatum: retire or have the surgery immediately! With Speedy’s extremely low pain tolerance and seemingly lack of desire to play with even mild discomfort, I doubt if we will see him on the court until the 2009-2010 season, which is his contract year. Stop coddling this guy and force him to make a decision one way or the other! Steadman gave Claxton an opinion…get another one and get the surgery done or retire…no need to sit around and mull something over when you have no desire to play with mild discomfort. I hope Claxton retires…I don’t think I have ever loathed a professional “athlete” as much as Speedy “The Fraud” Claxton.

Marvin is pathetic and worthless unless he can get his little flaling like a girl foul. They aren’t calling them this game and the ball goes 20 feet in the air and Dallas gets an easy fastbreak layup. Get Marvin out.

Well Doc so much for pleading for the Z man. I didn’t think Woody would take that to Heart. You gotta go with AH unless he’s in foul trouble.

I didn’t get a chance to watch the game, spending family time.

I knew Dallas would want revenge from there lost and I also felt Joe would have to have a huge game to get a win, especially with Josh Howard back. Sounds like a Game where you give Solomon a try. If he fouls out it doesn’t affect your rotation. Dampier got bad knees so giving Solomon a few minutes wouldn’t be reach or go can go with Shelden, because when Zaza is out there getting dominated, you gotta get’em out the game.

I said 3 and 1 if they beat the Mavs, and 2 and 2 if they don’t, I’ll stand by that.

ATTENTION ALL HAWKS FANS:

Sorry but I couldn’t resist. Check out this article on Foxsports and let’s see if Sekou or anyone else could come up with a better analysis of this team:

Despite this predictable loss in Dallas, Atlanta still sports a record of 15-13 (6-4 vs. the West) and remains one of the surprise teams in the league. The Hawks were never really in the game, but they nevertheless provided meaningful intimations as to why they’ve done so well, and also how their short-term destiny might unfold.

Why the Hawks are flying high

Josh Smith is a remarkable athlete. He’s creative with the ball, with his killer move being a hard drive right before coming back to his left hand for the shot. He spins, runs and shows terrific range when it comes to blocking shots (six in the game). He also plays earnest defense and did not back away from Dirk Nowitzki.

Acie Law is a speedster who sees and delivers remarkably well for a rookie point guard. He has a soft jumper and is a tricky finisher with his left hand. Law is also very aggressive on defense, where his quick hands are a huge plus.

Anthony Johnson is tough enough, but not quick enough. Still, he made impeccable decisions with the ball and ensured that the Hawks got into their offense in a timely fashion. Johnson shot only when he had no choice (and was 2-for-2). Before the end of the season, however, look for AJ to back up Law.

Al Horford has a nice mid-range stroke and is comfortable shooting a jump hook with his right hand. He runs, can handle some, has quick hands and understands the game.

Joe Johnson had a tough time against the Mavs’ double-teaming defense. Indeed, the home team’s focus on stifling him seemed to drain JJ’s energy. Even so, he was still a deadly shooter when he could pull-up going right, and until the end of the game he tried to kick the ball to open teammates. He remains the main man in the Hawks’ offense.

Marvin Williams has a big-time stroke, but needs lots of time and space to launch his shots.

Despite trailing by as much as 21 points in the third quarter, the Hawks never gave in. Their 1-2-2 matchup zone gave the Mavs fits, and they eventually whittled their deficit down to six before they ran out of gas.

Virtually every shot taken by the Mavs was vigorously attacked.

Everyone hustled in transition.

Everyone contested every loose ball.

The Hawks also demonstrated a strong sense of brotherhood when, on several occasions, they helped an opponent to his feet after knocking him down. In the old days, Pat Riley would fine his players $2,000 for showing such compassion.

Why the Hawks might crash

Horford is listed as 6-foot-10 and 246 pounds, but seems undersized and is certainly not as strong as an NBA center has to be. It remains to be seen what will happen when he crashes into the rookie wall. Horford also makes rookie mistakes, mostly on defense.

Can Smith shoot the ball with consistency? Also, while he can complete easy passes, he also tends to force others.

Law had trouble finishing with his off-hand, i.e., his right hand, missing all four of his wrong-sided layup attempts.

Williams is totally ball-oriented on defense. On offense, he forced too many shots (as did Smith and JJ.)

Zaza Pachulia is a barely adequate backup big.

Shelden Williams is a jump shooter trying unsuccessfully to act like a tough guy.

Josh Childress is a hot-footed, long-armed defender who has no go-to offense.

The Hawks looked to switch most high screen-and-rolls, but failed to make any defensive adjustments to handle the resulting mismatches. Law was left to defend Jerry Stackhouse in the low-post with no help — and the same situation existed when Nowitzki took the much smaller Marvin Williams into the pivot. The Mavs scored easy hoops both times.

Whenever the Hawks two-timed one of the Mavs’ wings, their subsequent rotations were usually late. So, then, what does this team need to keep aloft?

A burly big man who can rebound, defend and pose a threat to score in the paint. (But hey, what team doesn’t need one of these guys?)

At least one more dead-eye perimeter shooter.

Lots of video, on-court and weight-room work for Law and Horford. But at least, for the first time in recent memory, the Hawks do have a future.

Let us put the blame where it belongs. The hawks shot poorly for this game. Josh Smith shot and AC shot 36% from the field. JJ was 33% from the field. JJ has to shoot better than 33% for the Hawks to win. Now you see why, I have been crying for a Kareem Rush type of player. We could have used that punch coming off the bench.

I have a question. Is it me or does anyone else believe the hawks are a better team when AJ run the point? Woody let AJ run the point and let AC come off the bench. AC could turn into a combo guard for us. He can give AJ and JJ a rest. The guy is what 6-4. He can play shooting guard.

Is it just me or does it seem obvious to anyone else that Shelden is a better Center than Zaza. I know Z has like 2 inches on him but Zaza, a “veteran”, looks lost out there sometimes.

Ryder that seems like a pretty good analysis to me.

Oh well, I enjoyed the game and like the fact that even down by 20 at one point they never gave up and actually got the score to within 6. But even then I didn’t think they had much of a chance. Mavs were shooting great and Hawks weren’t. Even when the Hawks lose you can see the maturity they lacked in past years.

Steve, sorry but I don’t think you really would want to see Zaza chasing to catch up to the opposing teams PF. I may be wrong, but when was the last time anyone heard of Zaza finishing on a break? I’m not saying he’s not a good backup C. However, I think against certain teams he should play, and against others they should find minutes for Sheldon and Soloman. I feel if you’re going against a team like Dallas, you need a C that is going to be ACTIVE. And defensively Zaza isn’t really that active. If Zaza and Lue could get Pryzbilla until the end of the season, I would say do it b/c he will be off the book s then. If it can’t work out, then just use different people in different situations. That is what the great teams do.

Offensively, I’m not complaining about Zaza because every one has a bad game. But when he’s struggling offensively, you need to sit him because he brings nothing else to the game.

Overall, all though they lost I think they played a good game. There are going to be games where you just don’t shoot good as a team, even Dallas just had 3 of those in a row. The Spurs had the same type of game last week. But despite all of that and the Mavs shooting good, they were still in the game.

Despite Woody not knowing much about offense, this is the best defensive team the Hawks have had since Mutombo and Blaylock lead the charge (sorry Steve Smith was never a shutdown guy). Thats the major difference in all the games. If you play good defense through the game, you will always have a chance to win at the end of the game. Offenses come and go, but defensive teams always have a chance to win.

As a team, although Smoove was always a good help defender and Joe could always bring it at times, this season the over all team defense has improved greatly. And the main reason is b/c with Horford and Smoove, its hard for teams to do what they used to do with the pick and roll. Zaza, Laettner, Harrington, Walker, and even Jason Terry, neither of those could defend the pick and roll. But this team can. AJ’s size at PG also help them be able to accomplish this well also. Because Lue, for all of his shots, just can’t defend period. If the opposing team’s PG is going to get 18-20 ppgs off of Lue, why not let him have a shot here and there.
