Five things (revisited)

Can we keep this clean today? No pot shots at anyone, particularly your boy Blog-Z, who has taken numerous, un-Christmas-like digs from all over the place around here lately.

Last night’s win over Miami was a jaw-dropper. Most of the people that came up to me after the game were stunned that the same team that couldn’t hold its water against Seattle and Washington last month could pull of its second straight bare-knuckle affair (the first was Monday’s win over Utah).

My quick thoughts on five things (that have become clear to me over the course of the past two weeks):

JOHNSON AND JOHNSON=OFF THE HOOK: You get 47 points, 18 assists, four steals and just three turnovers from your starting backcourt in a win where they make the go-ahead baskets in the final minute and five seconds of an overtime affair. Anyone out there foolish enough to question Joe Johnson’s commitment to winning and playing at an elite level is just plain misguided. Dude’s a monster, as Heat coach Pat Riley so aptly pointed out after the game: “Joe was great. He hit a couple of runners in transition and he had a 3-point play in transition. And Anthony Johnson hit two big shots as well. They’re a good team, and we tried every way that we could to win.”

TOUGH WAY FOR MOURNING TO GO: If we did see the end of Alonzo Mourning’s inspiring career, nothing should stick out more than the way he went off the floor after tearing his right patella tendon. He waived off the stretcher and walked off like the warriors he’s always been. People were already debating his Hall of Fame worthiness after the game. I think he has to go in eventually (remember, it’s not just what you did as a pro but your entire basketball career. And he was at or near the top of his class every step of the way).

TWO WINS IN THREE DAYS: They could turn out to be the two most important wins in the Billy Knight era, if these last two wins mark the turning point for this team. Never mind the opponents but focus more on the circumstances and the way the Hawks won both times. They bowed up, finally, and willed their ways to wins when things could have very easily gone the other way.

GIVE MARVIN HIS DUE: Keep banging on Marvin Williams all you want, but understand that this kid won’t be punching bag much longer. He’s proving to anyone willing to pay attention that he’s for real this season. He dropped a smooth 20 and 10 on the Heat and played the ideal game with Josh Smith and Al Horford in foul trouble all night. Most impressive was that he didn’t back down from taking some big shots just because he’d missed a few. He kept firing and came through when the Hawks needed him most.

TOUGHER THAN LEATHER: The test sample is still at the lab but the early indication is that this Hawks team is simply tougher than it has been in the past. No one’s sure if it’s just another year’s growth or what? But this team has shown grit so far this season that just was not there before. Admit it, when Dwyane Wade got that three-point play in overtime you thought it was a wrap for the Hawks. But they’ve given us every indication that those days are over. We’ll just have to monitor the sample and see how things work out.

Happy Holidays Sekou! I’ve really enjoyed the blog this year.

I agree with your assessment of Marvin - I think he’s been great this year and will continue to develop. Into what? I think as a solid, all-around player who will do anything he can to help his team win. The best still lies ahead for him.

SEKOU, agree with you on MARVIN. and most importantly he DID NOT back down…PERIOD…in regards to anythin’!!! i’ll bet CP3 will get a totally different reaction to his tough guy sh$t if he tries to pull that stuff on MW again!! can’t wait for MW to post his a$$ again!!LOL MARVIN is steppin’ his game and intensity up, no doubt!! Sekou, when is Chills expected to be back. We could sure use him to help slow down Caron. Washington, Indy, and Dallas. Thats a rough 3 game stretch. We need at least 1 to stay at 500. 2 out of 3 would be even better.

AJ seems like the real deal, they have a great record when he is starting. Marvin is coming into his own and will only get better. We need to sign Josh Smith to a long term contract sooner rather than later. For the first time in years the hawks are fun to watch.

gee, i didnt realize blog z was as sensitive as you make us out here to be sekou. he he heh

good day for me as well since i got three of the five in an earlier blog. listen maybe you need to give zaza some cred as well. he bowed up last night without josh and al at their best and shook off shaq and the hosses of the heat as well as marvin did. couldnt believe that call on him when shaq hooked him like some of the off the rope manuevers i saw on live atlanta wrestling and shaq then took him to the ground then zaza of all things got called for the foul. it looked just as rigged as some of the wwf stuff as well. anyway, he stood up, didnt look at the refs, didnt whine and came back and stood in there toe to toe with their guys. come on sekou where is the love? or should that be considered piling on you? like it all sekou keep it up!

john gt and ryder it is all on you and we expect you guys to give it up big for the hawks in dangerous territory and get us a road win. maybe you can convince flash to get out and see the boys up close and personal. what you say flash, you going to be there?

Did anyone else think that last night’s game was one of the most poorly officiated ones they’d ever seen?

By Dan

December 20, 2007 2:03 PM | Link to this

Screw the Heat. After last night, they became my least favorite team in the league. I have never seen a team get such love from officials. They come in at 7 and 17, but get the treat of the ‘96 Bulls. Might have been the worst officiating job I have ever seen last night.

Gotta love Marvin. The guy is becoming automatic from 20-feet in. Plus, he can just flat out take the ball to the hoop strong. Good for him! I hope he makes the All Star game one day and clowns like Mark Bradley and Terrance Moore can eat crow for always calling him a bad pick.

AJ!!!! All that needs to be said!

One of the most impressive things I saw last evening was what appeared to be the arrival of a ‘physical’ Marvin Williams. In one memorable moment during a shot attempt he took what appeared to be a couple of obvious whacks to the arm and body from Wade and Shaq, but no foul was called. Rather than yelling at the officials for the missed calls, he calmly and authoritatively deposited Wade on his hind parts about 5 feet beyond the end line on the next trip down the floor. The expression on Wade’s face was priceless when he looked up to see who had man-handled him. Steve Smith called it a clean hard foul; I called it a fairly certain announcement that the ‘teenage’ Marvin is no longer #24 in your program. Looks like the kid has grown up.

I’m happy for Marvin.I bashed him before for not playing at the same level as paul and deron, but it looks like he’s putting it together.

Turns out that Anthony Johnson trade was a good one.All the Mavs got was Nick Fazekeas and he’s in the D-League.If AJ plays like this we could finish in the top 4 in the east

The Hawks play above the rim. We have great overall height with any team we put on the floor. Marvin is just a youngster and already looks like Julius Erving the way He can “Sky” for rebounds, and shoot. What fun it is to watch the Team Effort these days. They will only get better. I`d like to fuss about Josh Smith shooting outside too much but, hey, He will learn better. Overall, If you know ANYTHING about this game, you can see we are in for a lot of enjoyment from this crew for the future. And as a long suffering fan, it is about time and I am RELLY ENJOYING what is going on. GO HAWKS!!!!!!

Chris Paul is a great player, but he is a straight-up candy a$$ when it comes to physical contact…punching that N.C. State playing in the groin in college and continually acting like a punk in the pros — he needs his a$$ busted one good time in the NBA. Where is Esteban Batista when you need a loud -mouthed squirt like Paul gooned, lol?

By Ced Ced

Every game the Hawks get better and better. Some games may not look as up to par as others but its evident that their learning to play together and learn each others moves. The only person who seems out of place is ZaZa, he just doesn’t seem to flow like the other players. ZaZa is a liability to the team and gets in his own teammates way.

By Edwin

Not sure if it was said yet, but I think Al Horford has rubbed off on every player on the team. He brings an energy and attitude that we clearly needed. Even Marvin is beginning to get tough and have a raw edge to him. Watching the Hawks so far this season, it is apparent that they have turned more of a mental corner. Last night you could really see it in OT. They never backed down…two years ago, they’d have lost by 10 in the OT. Last night was the first time in a while that I was literally jumping out of my seat and cheering like a young boy. NBA Package was well worth it so far this season!

By Fred

December 20, 2007 3:01 PM | Link to this

It is all about Anthony Johnson. Joe is being Joe. Marvin has been knocking down jumpers all season. We finally have a guy at the point who GETS IT. He almost always gets the ball to the open man in a spot where he can do something with it.

In transition, AJ is not so selfish as to try and take the ball to the rack like most of our guys do. He simply draws the D and drops it off. We have had more uncontested dunks the last 2 weeks than the last 2 seasons.

This is what a veteran point guard can do, and I am loving it. We really need to get Acie healthy so AJ can get some more rest. We are going to need him healthy later in the year when we are making our PLAYOFF RUN!

I would like to be the first to eat crow on several subjects: 1)I thought Marvin “Duck Butt” Williams would never come to life…he has! 2) I didn’t think Woodson could snap this guys out of their 2nd half comas…for now it appears he has! 3)I thought Anthony Johnson was washed up…he appears to have something left in the tank. These guys, unbelievably, have swagger now. I saw it for the first time last night. For the first time in YEARS I might add. You can see their’s a sense of belief among them now and that’s where it all starts, YOU gotta believe in YOU. They keep playing together like they are and there is NO WAY they won’t not only make the playoffs, but give some team all they can handle. They’re just too many talented athletes on the Hawk’s roster for them not to win. I don’t like losing, but what I hate worse is lack of effort, lack of belief in one’s self, and I think that’s what turned some fans off over the last few years. When this town gets a whiff of the swag these cats are walking around with plus some more “W’s” in the win column, they are going to like what they see, I guarnatee it. Welcome to the big leagues Marvin, nice to see you finally reaching that potential, we’ve been waiting for you awhile now. It appears the wait has been worth it!

GO HAWKS!!

Maybe the bloggers need more holiday cheer. Wasn’t the hate free zone about 10 days ago?

The Hawks are for real. With a good draft and a year of maturity, things have gotten better.

Hopefully the injury ward will shrink soon and get a few more players back in uniform. I’ll even give Woody credit for getting the team to be tougher when things get dicey at the end of the game.

Merry Christmas to all as fans of Atlanta’s team on the rise. Now let’s knock some magic out of the Wizards.

It appears to me that the Hawks are now balanced with the potential for any one of their three scorers to have a big game. AJ is smart with the ball and distributes it well.

More importantly he can hit the open shot so people can’t slack off of him to much. I like these young guys they all were winners before and the cream always rises. If all of them do so we may be having fun for years to come with the Hawks

After back to back losses against Seattle (Damien Wilkins really) and Milwaukee I had my doubts about this team. Now in retrospect I believe we got past the early season tough schedule (Phoenix, Dallas and Detroit) and have had a chance to learn how to play together. Considering we’ve done this with three or four good players out (particularly J-Chill) we’re making good progress. Maybe Woodson can coach.

Marvin’s game has really come along and he will get better. AJ has finally gelled with the team and should continue to start when Acie comes back but Law deserves a lot of minutes as well. J-Smooth is playing better because he’s shooting less from outside. JJ is our warrior. In games against weaker teams he should let his shots come to him. Against the better teams he needs to continue to be aggressive. Horford is everything we could’ve hoped for and his offense will eventually improve but I worry about him hitting the rookie wall in mid-season; hence Sheldon and Zaza have to continue to play better. If Salim and T Lue can get and stay healthy we should be able to get more outside shooting from someone besides Marvin.

We’ve definitely improved. We need the 5 days we get after tomorrow night and then need to be prepared mentally for the long haul till All-star break. We’re good now. Can we keep it up?

By Cedric

December 20, 2007 3:21 PM | Link to this

Good game by the bench when we needed them last night. Aj and JJ will have to carry the load until we can fully recover from all these injuries. Salim and AC Law will help down the stretch before the break. I still think there has got to be some run for Soloman jones somewhere. He has the length and legs to excell in the uptempo game we want to run. Just got to get the right combination together during these times. Good job the Woodie to go offense and defense w/Zaza and Mario in the 4th quarter.

Sekou and others, do you all think that Holford and Zaza are a strong enough combo at center for the Hawks long term?

By Darrin "The Vent King"

December 20, 2007 3:42 PM | Link to this

Edwin- you are exactly right IMO. I’ve been saying for the longest Horford would have that affect on this team. Being a Gator fan, I know that’s how they played. The Gators b-ball team would have NEVER been as good as they were if they didn’t play together like they did and he has brought that here with him. He has help motivate the rest of them to get it going because he was making a couple of those guys look bad when he first came here. It was clear as day Horford had his own motivation and work ethic when he arrived and it started opening eyes from everyone from the fans to the coach. Everyone had to step their game up. I truly believe Horford is a big reason. Not the only one, but one of the biggest reasons. I hope it continues.

Childress is expected back for the Wizards game.

I would suspect that AJ has locked up the starting PG spot until further notice.

And JohnGT, I’m in D.C. bright and early in the a.m., so if you’ve got pull at the P’gon, holler at me. I’m on myspace, it shouldn’t be hard to find me either.

I think Horford and Zaza are a potent 1-2 punch, with Lorenzen Wright providing some backup beef when needed.

It’s really nice that Marvin is being aggressive on offense, but he is still a pretty bad defender. He clearly has the athletic ability to be a good defender, but he needs to put in the time to learn some defensive fundamentals. Once he does that, maybe we can start talking about how he wasn’t a bad choice at #2 overall.

Sekou I’m right down from the ‘gon, if you’ve got time you should go to the ESPNZone on 7th and H. It’s right down the street from the Verizon Center. My Wife and I will be there as the only people wearing Marvin Williams jerseys.

JohnGTfan where you at? I’ll send out the myspace hookup when I have a chance.

I will spare the drama for one day and give love to Marvin. He has stepped up the way he would’ve last year if not for injury. Tomorrow night against Caron Butler will be something to watch!

I thought the Hawks beat the Heat and the refs last night. In the replay of Marvin’s “foul” on that OT 3 point play by Wade, I could see zero contact at all when Wade was shooting. Earlier Marvin was clobbered by Shaq while attacking the basket, got no call. There was another scenario earlier where Horford was called for a moving screen—4th foul I think— that was actually a Wade acting job. Then at the other end—very next play—their guy gets open for a 15 footer clearly by getting a moving screen—no call. I could go on…..

With all of this, it would be easy for the Hawks to fold as they would have the last couple years. Instead they hung tough and kept making plays. This is going to be an exciting season. I believe the kids are rapidly becoming men.

This could get interesting if these guys keep winning. first off, The eastern conference is still weak. Second, the Hawks are only 4 games back of first place Orlando and they have beat them at there place and have proven they can beat anybody in there division, home or away.

What will be interesting is that if these Hawks can stay focused and stay healthy, they may find themselves in the playoff with a #4 or maybe #3 seed. Wishful thinking right now, but hey, the Southeast division is a winable division and no one seems to be that strong other than Boston and Detroit.

I am enjoying this. Even as the paranoid, err-on-the-side-of-caution part of me whispers that the season is just over a quarter of the way through…I’m still enjoying this.

The win over Miami proves that this team has heart and is definitely tougher than before. Don’t know what it took to bring this out, but I’m loving it.

Like I said last blog, we’re seeing a team that isn’t stealing wins or escaping with them. We’re seeing a team that is earning wins. And what a lovely sight it is. I’m glad to see guys stepping up. I’m glad to see that AJ is proving his worth, and proving that Billy did the right thing by acquiring him. I had my doubts for a while there, and like anybody else, there was plenty of reason to doubt.

I hope that a move or two is made anyway. We really could be one key injury away from it being just too much. I’m not saying make a move to make a move (some of you will take it this way no matter how I say it). I’m saying make a smart move. A needed move. Yeah Chill is supposed to be back soon. But preparing to go the rest of the season with 8 or 9 guys isn’t smart, no matter how you slice it. However, if this is how it’s going to be and we aren’t adding for insurance, then guys like Solomon Jones need to get some PT. Practice alone isn’t going to prepare anybody for crunch time. And when you practically never play, any time is crunch time. All I’m saying is make good use of what you have, or bring in extra help.

This is a team that fights, a team that bites back. This team doesn’t back down and come undone as easily as before. I fervently hope that this is the team we continue to see.

On the flip side, if it does not continue, we’ll be right back where we were: laying blame in every which direction possible and diving after each other on the blog.

…But I sure hope not…winning feels good.

Folks, remember Deron and Chris played 3 and 4 yrs of college ball. Marvin played 1. Thats 2 to 3 yrs difference. Would you take them, the way they are playing RIGHT NOW, or would you take Marvin with 2 or 3 more years under his belt? Think about it.

Ugh, what the hell is wrong with ESPN? I just watched a highlight clip from last night (seen here and the clip shows DWade being “fouled”, and the host at the end remarking “the Hawks never beat the Heat, but they did this night”. It just proved that this year is gonna be an uphill battle for the Hawks this year. Right now, that winner’s mentality is cultivating. (I blame the rookies, all 3 of ‘em have ignited a fire for the team.) But the media will continue to dog the Hawks after EVERY win (win or lose). Instead, teams like the Heat get to play on National TV EVERY WEEK, sometimes two/three times a week, with the worst record in the East. Shucks, the Knicks, the Grizzlies, even the Wolves (league-worst record) get 3 National games. Durant and Oden earned their respective teams National TV time, but Horford did not? Interesting…

That being said, as the Hawks become accustomed to W’s, they’re gonna need some facts of life like the ones I listed above to keep that chip on their shoulders. There’s still more: JJ’s not a leader, Marvin’s a bust, Sheldon’s a bust, Josh can’t do nothing but jump, Acie’s not a true point guard, Where’s Salim?, Anthony Johnson-really?, are the Hawks still in the NBA?, etc. This spurt of life won’t mean anything to outsiders if it’s not followed up properly, with wins. The team now is better than they were the last time they played Washington, the last time they played Dallas. They gotta prove it tomorrow, and next week, to the NBA world. I think they will.

Go Hawks! I expect a victory…

I definitely like what Marvin is beginning to do more consistently. Get to the hole, drill those free throws. And congrats on the 57-footer. It brought me off the LA-Z-BOY big time. Ah yes, finally the highlight factory becomes real…

Oh, and Acie didn’t look too slow driving to the hole, either.

It has been a long wait but it really is nice to finally have something to cheer about. It wasn’t that long ago we were calling for blood like a bunch of Knicks fans at MSG. I’ve been most happy with our play against our division and the Washington game will be a big one. Great to hear Chill will be back for that one.

If Sheldon Williams can catch the fever as well I think we’re going to be set for awhile with this team. If only we can afford to keep all of our great young talent!

Hey guys, I know its the wrong blog, but of the 3 3win teams the Falcons and the Rams have 1 division win each. The Jets beat the Dolphins twice, so they have 2 division wins. Does this give us the 2nd pick behind Miami if the draft were today?

tb, you just go a bit overboard at times first with the enthusiasm and then with misinformation. paul was a two year man and deron was a three and left after being in a national championship game. paul came out as a twenty year old and made a huge impact from the very FIRST day he stepped on the court. deron had to grow into what he is in one year. our acie a four year man has shown none of it so i hope he comes on strong in the end of this year or next year.

let us not get too carried away with the emotion and love dude or at least dont expect us to take you too seriously throwing it out like that. chris paul was the western conference rook of the month every month of his rook year and led his class in minutes, points, assists and steals. chief, marvin should get his due but he has played ONE monster game with a double double against a team that has won only seven games; dude give it a big mother f…… break. get your facts right as well as he is ONLY one behind paul and two behind deron, those are the facts. stop making up history and fantasizing about what might be, lets us just stay real and in the moment.

ray, that was just too hard to resist, laughing all the way. go to your corner tb.

Well our birds are finally growing up, they are learning that they can indeed fly. Its seems as though they finally get that playing D = getting wins, we could always score but playing D is the difference. And we are finally getting good point guard play, we needed a steady hand at the point and who knew AJ was going to be the one to give it to us. And also we are developing the mindset that the show must go on, you are going to have your share of injuries but you still have to continue to ball, and having depth for the first time helps also.

Sekou, this has been a great blog. These Hawks are just plain better, and more mature than the last couple of years. It is so great to see that people in the city are so positve about this group, as well they should be. All of our patience has paid off, and we are being rewarded. Let us stay positive “IF” we hit a bump or two in the road. We have a Dynamic team, and I challenge our fans to be just as Dynamic. Our guys are doing it on the court, so lets be a more Mature and Physical 6th man at the games. GO ATLANTA GO (that means fans also)

Doc, there’s no point in resisting sometimes. And I kinda like the way you went off towards the end of your 8:45 post. That was just straight up off the chain! Ando’s been telling me how you are at games with the refs…can’t wait to hang with y’all at a game eventually.

TJ, I don’t know where to begin. The media is doing what many of us expect them to do. Face it, the larger media entities such as ESPN have and pick their darlings. Unless their fickle tastes lean this way (or we break all reasonable expectations and enter, then win the first round of the playoffs) we get no love. Even then, they probably won’t equate us to anything more than a cheap version of last year’s Golden State Warriors. That’s how it is. As for your player assessments, I hope you meant that as motivations that players can use to prove the vast majority opinion wrong.

Here’s to hoping they prove even ardent fans such as myself wrong by making the playoffs and going strongly all season.

O.k., I was one year off doc. Thats still a big difference, my man. And who cares about rookie of the month? Did the Hornets make the playoffs? Why dont you compare Marvin to all 3rd year small forwards in the league. You cant compare point guards to forwards. My age comparison was based on Marvin having more time to develop. “Rookie of the month” GIVE ME A BREAK.

Call me goofy…but I really see ATL coming here to DC tomorrow and picking up a win, then another win on Wed to go 3 games over .500. JJ wasn’t just saying they have confidence…you can really see it. And I can’t wait to see it live tomorrow night against the Wiz. They showed each other the last couple games…and a few times this year, that even on an off night, they can still win in this league. I think they’re all beaming right now and I don’t see this train slowing down!!!! I’m thinking 40 - 45 wins is very possible for these kids…and when they all get healthy…the East better watch out!

that is how dominant paul has been since he stepped on the court tb as a 20 year old to earn or dominate everyone in his class when there was this frail little overmatched 19 year old almost 9 inches taller and 60 pounds heavier who he outplayed. that is the point. now as far as numbers for career paul has as many rebounds per game and 6 points a game more in addition to 8 dimes more than marvin. that is huge and as far as the; “has he gotten them to the playoffs?”, the guy is looking to be the next oscar robertson also a guy who didnt have much of a team around him and therefore almost never got a ring himself. he also has the hornets looking pretty strong and above the hawks in wins in a deeper conference as the clear leader of his team not the third option. oh yeah, he is one year older i forgot, excuse me marvin.

now as they are in their third years this years numbers dont even come close in a direct comparison between paul and marvin. let it be dude. it just doesnt compute when you come up with this comparison stuff.

as far as askng me to do your research on the other threes in that year or the last three years one ahead and one behind him to put it into perspective to figure out which young three is equal or better and am sure there are several, why dont you do some real research yourself and report back and maybe, just maybe, you might learn something for perspective. after that study of yours and if it is more accurate than your earlier data, if marvin is the leader of the band then we all will have learned something and can begin to beat his drum loudly for all to hear.

just dont bring the guy up in the same breath for at least a while where marvin comes close to duplicating what either deron or paul has done over a season or half a season not one friggin game.

again, i gave marvin his due and i am enjoying it, just dont go overboard as you sound like a little smitten hawk groupie or maybe one of the hawks dancers. marvin is very faaaar behind now in his third year or are you going to always continue to play it as paul is older. come on tb, give it up.

as far as not being able to compare points and forwards then why did you ever bring it up? to see if anyone was still awake, sober or coherent? ok, ray and i are awake and quite amused, i am sober and i cant speak for ray but he seems coherent and i cant speak for my coherence. heh heh.

…and the rich get richer. Looks like Chris Webber is headed back to the Pistons.

For all you Blog GMs, the Pistons already have 15 players, so somebody has to pack a bag and get out of town. Is there someone that BK & Woody want and can get off that roster?

I am willing to roll with the squad we have, but is there a deal to be made…maybe even a 3 way that moves someone for cap purposes to pick up a big center?

Is it time to turn on the BK/GM signal?

Doc, while you make some great points about CPaul, one thing you forgot to mentioned is that Cpaul has had the luxury of being coached by Baron Scott since he been in the pros. Anybody that doesn’t think that Scott has not been a intricate part of the development of CPaul needs to lay of the kool-aide. CPaul is a helluva player, but you can’t compare Marvin to PGs. Marvin can play the SG, SF, and PF position, his upside is limitless. Neither CPaul nor DWilliams is that versatile.

Marvin admitted he needed more polishing when he was selected as the number two player in the draft. He entered the draft to help his parents out; you can’t fault the guy for that. He showed flashes of this type of talent as a freshman, he is only going to get better. He is such an unselfish player, it works to his detriment in the game sometimes. It was great to see the guys on the bench encouraging him to be more aggressive.

I agree with the other bloggers about AH impact on the team. Al was interviewed after the Spurs game, he complemented Mario for the hustle and intensity he brings on the floor every game, he also call out the rest of the players on the team saying we all need to play with the same intensity as Mario. I think guys took the rook comments to heart. I also think the player’s only meeting really help this team. AJ was the guy that came out doing all the talking and he has been the guy that has really stepped his game up.

On the subject of Eddie Curry, let’s not forget this guy has punished the Hawks with his low post play every time he plays us. I think Woodson could get a lot more out of Curry than Isaiah. Don’t forget Woody resurrected AWalker career while he was with the Hawks. He made Walker play defense, he could do the same with Curry, plus we have Alton Lister on the staff now. We have somebody to help develop our Bigs. Curry is a good kid, he wouldn’t that big of a risk. It depends on what NY would want in return. People were saying the same thing about Tyson Chandler when he went to Hornets. Now he is a rising star.

Great stuff guys, GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

NO TB, i will freely admit c paul was NOT my first choice. i agreed that marvin would be the best pick for the long run and i truly didnt see paul’s greatness, only blinded by his faux pas of slugging someone which has been an anomaly. though some people cant forget even as he has done what he has done, exhibit a above. so i can be very candid and objective about any attempts to make the marvin story in comparison to paul. i was not either clyde nor ando nor sekou in that sweepstake. it only took me a year to get it right with campaigning for roy.

now, i will stand up and say i argued for yi for several reasons one being his youth and outside shot to open up lanes for the bigger guys, help jj, create mismatch misery and we already had the guy that was supposed to do with al as a choice, that when we took sheldon. in other words horford was to cover a mistake and a cheap, legally strapped ownership. yi also has the same promise much like what i argued with marvin and you are arguing for now just three years later. you might even see yi play anywhere for 2 to 5 talk about versatility.

just the same, coach aside mike, paul came into the league ready to play with the big boys from the get go at a very young age two months beyond his 20th bday and he didnt get coached up in one month. he is very special and should be regarded as so! anything less degrades his talent and shouldnt be attempted and cant be argued. i played fantasy bb that year and lucked up to have paul on “my team”. it was unbelievable as to what he did as a 20 year old in the league at his size and weight. also mike, any comment like that ONLY degrades your own coaching staff in a back handed way.

tb, paul isnt my boy, marvin was and that is one of the reasons i was pretty outspoken about what marvin has to do this year. yes, i am quite pleased to see what marvin is doing but it is waaaay to early for me to say i told you about marvin, as it is waaaaaaay to early for me to say yi is in the same boat as our beloved al though he is making strides. remember yi “only” played 4 years of top level international ball and is TWO years younger than al sooo i guess we can give him a break by your way of thinking. right? i just won’t, it is big time ball, played by men. you either deliver or you go home, no waiting and no excuses.

just setting the record straight and just let the men play without any excuses and dont compare then get upset when someone brings it back. though you cant compare positions you can compare impact for a team. paul out and hornets flounder, marvin out and we dont go in the tank. it is number one option against number three and marvin has not ascended to the number one option just yet. in fact i was just complimenting his team for riding marvin’s back to step up and be the man in certain situations. guys just stop it and enjoy them all; paul, marvin, horford and yi, all of the players. after all the rookie of the year is maybe like the oscars, do you compare a drama with a comedy or do you just enjoy it for what it is?

i am just glad to see nba bball in general and begin to see the hawks have left the nbdl. i am a total fan and i love my hawks and have for now my 50th year from when petit was on the team. can anyone top that? and yes there have been no nba championships since i began to follow them. tb i am a real long suffering hawks fan just like you dude so just let it lie and have fun with me dude.

btw tb, dont ask the question if you dont know the answer, a critical strategy in any argument. oh yeah, i am listening real well. cant wait for your critique of all the players of marvin’s ilk to say he is the best of them all. keep it real tb.

Doc, Michael Jordan didnt even make his high school sqad his junior year. The following year he was one of the best players in the country. I’m not comparing Marvin to Michael, just trying to show you what a difference a ONE YEAR can make. Now dont get me wrong, Paul is a great young player, but you cant tell me that he didnt improve from his freshman year at Wake to his sophmore year. Hell look at Marvin compared to last year or Sheldon for that matter. And you call yourself a doctor.

JohnGTfan i’ll do that. I live near Alexandria so I’m just going to take the (ugh) Metro up to the Verizon Center.

Atlanta has a long way to go to receive credit from the rest of the pundits. Even up here they are getting no love. The Wizards preview simply put, “this is another team they should beat easily, the Hawks.” I’m like, WTF? Then again, I understand that it will take more than a few wins against Miami to receive any support.

I have nothing against the Hornets, but I really, REALLY hope they don’t make the playoffs and the Hawks do. That way people can finally stop with the whole, “should’ve drafted Chris Paul” argument.

I usually don’t weight in discussions outside of Hawks games, but the conversations about C Paul and Marvin have been interesting. I have stated on this blog site before that I would have drafted CP first over Bogut, so the Hawks shouldn’t have gotten him anyways. But as for the comparison, you really can’t compare players from different positions. Clearly Paul is the better player at his position, and unless Marvin become L. James or something that will probably always be true. Paul is number 3 among PG, some might even say 2 or 1. Marvin can play multiple positions, so you have to compare him to multi-position players, like James, Prince, Kirilenko, etc. Its clear that Marvin is not in the top five in that discussion, but he might be top 15. Either way you can say that BK made a mistake, but it wasn’t a stupid move. Clearly picking Sheldon, over Roy was borderly stupid, but I can understand the pick. (even though I disagreed) Roy is the same player that JJ is and you don’t want to pick a guy to replace your paid Star, or to sit on the bench. We can keep following Paul and Marvin’s careers and do the comparison, but its just going to be fustrating. I definitely remember Paul’s sucker punch game, my first thought was, “Are you gay or something!!”.

I have been very critical of marvin williams and although he has played very well the last three games I’m still being cautiously optimistic. We have seen these surges by marvin in the past only to watch him once again disappear into the background. Example, Thru the first 8 games this season marvin averaged 18 points per game, then all of a sudden he went into a funk and averaged 12.5 points per thru the next 8 games. Marvin needs to stay agressive and become a more consistent player. He needs to put together a solid 20 game stretch before I start to believe he can become the player he was touted to be.

TB, by the way danny granger is another three that was drafted in the same class as marvin and he averages more points and rebounds- 17 vs. 16.5 and 6 vs. 5.8. Sorry but you had to ask!

Amen to the person who said if you live in Atlanta, you should cheer for the “Atlanta” Hawks! I was at the Miami game and I saw a lot of “fans” rooting for the bad guys. As a disclaimer, I understand if you were born in Miami and rooted for them all your life etc.. But if you’ve never even been to South Florida and are coming to our home game with a Miami Heat Jersy rooting extra hard because Miami is a popular team then you’re just a bandwagon fan prostituting yourself out until the next trendy team comes along. And to all those “I became a Miami fan way back when they got Shaq” Congrats you were cheering for the worst team in the Eastern Conference. I love South Beach just like anyone else but, this is the A, not Miami. Love it or leave it! Go Hawks!

SSI, if you look at the record, most of the top 5’s in the league are, so called, playing out of position. The thing is, there’re playing the hell out of their position(pun intended). Compare the production of the, so called, natural Centers to that of AStaudamire, KGarnett, AHorford, RWallace/CWebber, Howard, Okafor, etc.

You guys have got to get over this one dimensional concept of who should play a particular position, and how it should be played. Based on your criteria, Dave Cowens, Wes Unseld, both HOF players that played the 5, and Bob McAdoo wouldn’t have been allowed to play the position. I guess EBrand, CBarkley, Gus Johnson, Alex English, DDebusher, GMcginnis and Bob “butterbean” Love wouldn’t have had the size and/or height to play the 4, according to some of you. And how dare they take a 6’9” 230-240lb basketball player named Ervin “magic” Johnson and play him out of position by making him play PG? The Hall of Fame is filled with players that defy your one dimensional catagorizations.

How do you explain a so called, natural 4 like AStaudamire making Allpro playing head shoulders above all of the so called natural 5’s? It’s called versatility, not playing out of position. Remember Willis Reed, 6’10” about 245-250lbs? He’s a HOFer, and he made the Allstar team playing both the 4 and the 5. Again, it’s called versatility, so stop stereotyping.

tb, all is cool my friend. it hopefully is all taken in the manner in which it is meant healthy banter and not personal. there was some self deprecatory comments meant to lighten it a bit earlier, just don’t take too much too seriously except maybe the refs.

i’ll even give you the last word. nothing further on the matter with you.

now let’s manifest a win here guys tonight.

travis, two have been injured, one squelched by the system he is in maybe much like our no. 11 and will ultimately be compared to and one has had his moments just as al has had . this time last year bargnani was a gleam in his gm’s eye and then came on strong when his coach started to play him.

no arguments however to al’s value as i stated it above even before you brought it up. al is doing something special and we all agree. even he agrees he is out of position which we have said since his selection or even before his selection so there will ultimately have to be some changes dont you think or can we go to a jj at point, marvin at two, josh at three, al at four and zaza or someone else not in the organization at five? just asking.

yi wouldnt have created the same problem though he would have created a problem or problems for the coaching staff to integrate into “their system” is my guess and would have created more pressure on sheldon to live up to expectations quicker than he has shown a propensity towards doing consistently. and gosh that might have made up for the international issue that emory along with congress has brought down on atlanta and the u.s. this fall for recognizing the dali lama and sending yi packing to the beer capital of our nation. gosh we might have even gotten world peace with that selection! basketball is that important to the political structure of the world.

Doc, I too am a long suffering Hawks fan too. Pistol Pete was my dad favorite player. I use to sit with my dad and watch the Hawks games. We use to watch the Hawks on TV with the old black and white Philco with the clothe hanger sticking out. So I feel you Bro!! This is by far the best young group of talent for the Hawks since the Nique era.

You right about CPaul, I remember watching that cat go coast to coast with four seconds left on the clock to win a game at Wake Forest. I’ll give him his just due, the cat is got serious game. I think most of the criticism Marvin receives stems from the amount of apathy people have for BK taking a PF instead of filling a need at PG the year Marvin was drafted, same goes for Shelden. If Marvin continues to work hard on defense, and be aggressive on offensive, his performance will quite any naysayer.

On the subject of YI, there is some question as to his actual age. He has refused on numerous occasions to disgust discrepancies about his age. For all we know this guy could already be in his middle twenties. The thing that impressed me about Al was when all the hype and hoopla was going on prior to the draft, it was reported that Al was in Gainesville at UF training and working on his game. I said yea this guy is the real deal, so I could live with BK taking Al with the third pick. Before that I was all for taking Conely.

Hey we all drink kool-aide and eat crow on this blog, that’s why we call it the liars den.

ROAN ST, that’s to be expected from any player that isn’t the #1 or even #2 scoring option. Usually #3 options don’t have many, if any, plays designed or run for them. Besides, JJ, TLue and JSmith started going one on one or running pick and roll most of the time.

His resurgence is due to more team oriented OFF, better ball movement, and him becoming the #2 option because teams started clogging the lane to stop JSmith. That means outside shooting becomes a priority and Marvin has been deadly. The most important improvement that can be attributed to Marvin is his mental approach to the gm. He’s coming off picks and hitting shots. He’s posting up and taking running shots across the lane. When defenders try to take away his jump shot, he squares up and takes them to the hole. That’s why he’s going to the FT line so often. He’s getting RB’s, especially key OFF RB’s.. On DEF, he’s starting to get a lot of steals and deflections and even a few blocks. He’s playing the complete gm, and he’s doing it in the context and flow of the OFF. So, why are you still so skeptical? What more do you want from him?

Sheesh. No wonder Doc calls this the liar’s table. Fresh proof every day that you can come up with the most far-ranging, completely unconnected and irrelevant facts based on hindsight and used to try and prove one’s argument.

Good thing some of these discussions don’t happen in person. Otherwise an appendage in one’s posterior exit-only orifice would be the last thing you’d have to worry about. Maybe a size 12 applied to the same region…

Some people still don’t get it, either. The draft arguments have never been about the comparison between players. It’s about who would’ve helped the team more at the time…geeeezzz…

Doc, sorry for the name calling. I guess I am getting a little carried away with Marvin’s play of late. I’m just excited I guess. Can you blame me? It’s been hard being a Hawks fan, with all the losing going on over the past few years. I know we can all agree with that. GO HAWKS!

As well as we’ve played, we shouldn’t get too carried away. The Hawks are still young and the question of whether they can sustain their recent play (last thirteen or fourteen games) over a longer stretch of the season. I personally believe they can but it takes a big mental and physical commitment for a young team to do it. It should help if we get some of the injured guys back.

On the Marvin v. Chris Paul debate, Paul has obviously been a better player for the last 2 years for reasons that have been stated on this blog but there’s not going to be a need for Marvin to put up big numbers when you’ve got JJ and Josh Smith on our team. They’ll get theirs and then Marvin will get his as well. The Hornets rely much more on Paul. The thing I like about Marvin is that he gets a lot of good looks and he knows when to take them and then he knocks them down which is what counts.

Looking at the 02-03 Suns Roster (Amare’s rookie year) he was listed as a 6’8” PF. He’s listed as 6’10” (if that) now and he’s playing the 5. It works for their system. Al at the 5 works for this system. You can throw JSmash in at the 4, knowing that if Al didn’t block it, Josh will. Or you can throw Zaza in, let Al play the 4 - they’ve been doing that more since Zaza is healthy again. Time will help their chemistry even more.

Simply put, take Al out of the lineup. Do we have a 13-12 record? Do we have a “swagger”? Are we really thinking playoffs, and not just saying it to break a huddle? My mind says NO. Not to say that’s he’s THE reason, but he’s part of it. Kid is putting in work. And his teammates are following his example. “Have you watched this man do work? He’s a grown man. A grown man.” - Josh Smith realizing that Al will outshine him if he doesn’t man up as well, which he has. Josh has played like an All-Star. He’s had the gifts, just not the mental clout. I “blame” Al. Joe’s gettin’ his groove back. Marvin’s putting in work. The team’s winning close games. I “blame” Al. Kid’s a winner. Period.

The game tonight will be a fun one, two similar teams, with 4 perimeter guys around their center. They just shoot the ball BETTER than we do. The pace will be good, we just gotta roll with the punches and make shots. The Hawks gave the Wiz their first W. So this is a payback game.

Go Hawks! I expect a victory…

I do not think that you can undervalue Marvin’s development. He is an economical scorer. He scores the ball inside the defense, and can get inside the defense on his own or off an effective pass.

The less JJ dominates the offense, which has been happening a lot more this year (I think that that makes sense), the more Marvin is given an opportunity to contribute.

I believe that Woody and BK were so smitten with JJ and thought, perhaps rightly, that he HAD to occupy the ball so much in order for the team to have any chance, that the play/development of others suffered, Marvin included.

Doc, you do not take account of this in looking at Marvin’s numbers. When he first arrived it was a one man plus show (the plus being Al). Then, it was a completely one man show, with Josh Taking what he could. Now, it finally seems that there is a sharing of responsibility afoot. Perhaps this is a chicken and egg thing.

You presuppose Marvin was incapable of more sooner (probably right) and that it is only because he has matured that Woody (JJ) has allowed a sharing of the reigns. I am not so sure.

JJ doing less, and exploding when the stars are right, is an important part of this team’s development. Whoever laid that egg, it could well be a golden one.

tb, so you know how i really stand, i was foolish enough to argue that marvin was and would be ready to step up immediately and take over for the numbers that al harrington put up. so if marvin doesnt arrive soon i have egg all over my face and ando wins. i frimly believe that his day is coming. that wasnt the argument, as the other guy, who i wont rename, arrived the first time he stepped on the court.

in the end, i dont know if marvin will ever be on par with the other guy as long as we get someone who can lead the team on the court in the other guys stead. i think marvin will do more than al harrington would have done here in the near and far term both in his pure shot and in his ability to bound if he will grow a bit tougher. that is the real comparison and what ray speaks of as to how a guy fits.

now tb, are you clear on who my guy really is? marvin over al harrington and probably why i felt so strongly in marvin in the first place. he seemed to be a real good fit and i felt harrington was an old 26 or however old he was at the time.

and i dont take this stuff too serious and certainly not personal and would recommend that approach to everyone. it is fun to talk shop though and keep the name calling to a minimum.

Its obvious that we should run our 1st Q offense through Marvin and Horford. Marvin should exert maximum effort early as Chillz would sub him soon and JJ should save his energy as he would play nearly the whole quarter until Marvin comes back in for him.

Horford should take it to the opposing center and get him into foul trouble before the opposite happens.

JJ should wait for 4th quarter before he starts dominating the ball.

flash, how correct you are. you and i may have had some of the same discussions to the value of marvin except you might have been more the guy for al harrington at the time. anyway, comparing al harrington and marvin is more comparing apples to apples, i guess.

The media’s not all dissing the Hawks. They seem to be getting a little more respect of late. Below is an out take from Mike Kahn for Fox Sports:

“The other young team making waves would be the Atlanta Hawks, who moved to 13-12 Wednesday night, the latest they’ve been over .500 in 10 years. Their triplets — Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams and Josh Smith — with veteran point guard Anthony Johnson, were just too much for the Heat to handle in a 117-111 overtime win. And were it not for Dwyane Wade’s bizarre march to the free throw line seemingly every two seconds (he was 20-of-22 on the way to 36 points), the game wouldn’t have been that close. If they stay healthy, the Hawks look like they’re going to hang around all season, and with the talent of their triplets – plus Josh Childress when he returns from a groin strain – it’s only a lack of experience that can prevent them from causing serious damage to somebody when posteriors tighten in the spring.”

So I took a look ahead with the Hawks’ schedule, and while there aren’t any really rough patches aside from their first 6-7 game stretch, they close out with what right now looks to bunch of very winnable games.

In their last 17 games, they play the Knicks in MSG twice and another at home, Bulls at home and on the road, 76ers in a back-to-back home and road split, Bucks at home, Raptors at home, the Pacers at Indianapolis, and they finish up playing the Heat at Miami. They should definately win most, if not all of those, and two more of those games are at Washington and at New Jersey, which will be a little tougher but can be won.

Even throwing in two games against the Magic and one against the Celtics, I feel rather optimistic about that stretch. So long as they don’t completely blow up by that point, they should be able to secure a playoff spot somewhere in that stretch.

Well, we are now at the Christmas break, and we still haven’t seen Speedy “The Fraud” Claxton get on the court — surprise, surprise. A couple of weeks ago, Sekou said that Claxton had until Christmas to get onto the floor or the Hawks would try to work out a medical settlement. Please, for the love of God, get this bum out of town — like yesterday!!

On another note, when in the hell has DeShawn Stevenson shot this well from the floor?! Stevenson can’t throw it into the ocean. Figures. Keep it up Marvin!!! Go Hawks!!!

The Hawks pulled out a big win tonight, and the Magic lost!! Hopefully, we can get Lue back next week and be close to full-strength — with the exception of Claxton, of course. Now, if we can just get Speedy out of here with that medical settlement. By the way, Joe, J-Smoove, and Marvin seem to be shooting much better at the line this year, however, Shelden is really struggling this season. Anyone else see a hitch in Shelden’s free throw technique? I can’t believe Childress got eleven boards in limited minutes tonight — wow!!

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN! I’m wish I was at this game, but I finally got to watch one on TV. GREAT WIN on the road! Started out really hot during and then when down by 9. They never game up and didn’t even look like they we’re going to give up. JJ was an All-Star this game and JS making open 3’s was great. AJ really looks good at the point (even though he didn’t shoot well), Acie looked healthy but really never starting playing well. The Hawks have to give West a contract, great defense and making two free throws to ice the game, Big Time from the rookie. Even though the Wizards didn’t have Arenas or Daniels, this is a quality win on the road.

I will give Woodson credit for getting these guys ready to play and solving their earlier issues with rebounding and poor 3rd quarters. He still has a ways to go though, letting Marvin foul out of the game, with that much time left was just terrible. The first thing Josh did when he came in the game was score on an offensive rebound, he could have been doing that earlier and we still would have had Marvin if the game went to overtime.

I can’t say enough about how this team is playing and getting better. I guess I’m on the Play-off bandwagon. I said in an earlier blog that if they go 5-4 in the nine games after the win against Memphis, I would be convinced their a Playoff team this year. Well they have 5 wins already and still have two games to play, I BELIEVE!!

Keep playing great defense and stay health Acie, we need you!!

CLYDE, are you ready to give Woody credit for getting the Hawks to play like a championship calibur team? He’s done an excellent job of substituting, especially tonight. He played Chills long enough to get excellent production from him. He also played him at the right time. His tip in of JSmith’s airball helped kept Washington at bay.

You might not like him personally, but you have to be able and willing to recognize.

HD ANDO, I want to ask you an honest question. Earlier in the season, and during preseason, you adamantly predicted no more than 35 wins. Based on what you’ve seen so far, do you still hold to that prediction?

An observation. Since we started running a more structured OFF and playing much better DEF, teams have been unable to dominate us on the boards.

missed the game, at a very good movie with my daughters, lars and the real girl. game couldnt have been better but seems the guys are putting it together to make it pretty wins instead of ugly ones. also seems the big three got the measure of victory with over 60 points, 15 bounds and 10 assists between them. jj is beginning to look like wade jr without all the foul shots again in the boxscore.

That was a great basketball game. To handle the Wiz in their gym like that was impressive. Everyone contributed either in shots, defense or hustle. There was very little stupid stuff going on at all.

I still think we could use PJ Brown if he’d come out of retirement. He could play 10 to 20 minutes a game and be extremely effective for us. Given that everyone is going to start taking notice, ATL might be one of those teams he’d consider. Go Hawks.

Hey Doc Dickau is playing with the Clippers. He isn’t good but he’s alright. I bet he will have a longer career than Shelden Williams. Oh yea Doc wasn’t it you or was it Ando talking bout what a steal Nick Young was? He looked good tonight.

The Hawks looked good also. Its amazing how good this team could be if we would push the ball up the floor. AJ did a good job of that in the first quarter. This team is at its best when we get into transition.

But am I ready to give up the FIRE BILLY AND WOODY t-shirts? NO. Its way to early in the season to call this team a playoff team. And we all know AJ (which has been the key to this win streak) would not be playing that much if Lue and Speedy we’re healthy. The Hawks are a good team and they are improving but to me they ain’t ready. Lets see if the Hawks beat the Wizards in February or March when Gilbert is healthy.

WOOOOWWWWW!!!

I can’t even put into words how exciting that game was in person. I have no idea what the individual stats were…but to see ATL build that big lead early, then lose it….get down by 9 early in the 3rd, then get it back and keep pretty much the entire 4th qtr…..wow! JJ was incredible…Horford…lol…that guy is A MAN!!! JSmith was sick inside on D (the monster rejection he had WAS NOT A FOUL HE GOT CALLED FOR). Please excuse the emotion…but this is the first chance I’ve had to see this group play live. I heard many “comments” over my shoulder…and just like my birds baby…I HAD THE LAST LAUGH. The Wiz fans, though dedicated and faithful (they were in full force tonight, let me tell you), they aren’t the brightest group you’ll ever encounter. We kept hearing “travel”, “moving pick”, “foul”, etc etc. All I could do was turn around and laugh (yes, had a few budweisers). One fan directly behind me actually said this statement…”Haywood should be starting in the All-Star game”. I could not stop laughing…he was offended…I care. LOL Anyway…SEKOU…wish I could would have heard from you…but I know you were busy….next time you’re in town, please let me know ahead of time…I’ll get you that much deserved tour!!!!!

I like this hawks team, but am I the only one who still doesn’t like the roles on this team? Forgive me if I’m rehashing old arguments here, but I’d like to see Josh Smith at small forward where I think his unique athletic abilities can really shine. Horford would be a stud at power forward, and I like Zaza’s size at center. Johnson and Johnson round out the top five up front. Only question is who starts at small forward - Marvin Williams or Josh Smith? Does it really matter who starts? Seems to me what really matters is who finishes the game, and that depends on who’s hot and what the score is. Perhaps someone has to check their ego at the door. Regardless, I think such a lineup gives you a good starting lineup and a very good bench that can play with any team’s bench in the league.

Just moved back to the area & honestly have not been paying much attention to the Hawks for a few years. Until recently, my last memory of them they looked sloppy on both ends of the court and could not even do the basics like boxing out for rebounds. I have watched the last few weeks and am Quite happy with what I am seeing now. Not only are they playing agressive ball with heart, they are playing unselfish team ball with smarts. Everyone is contributing and playing within themselves. Prime example is RIO, he is not filling up any stat sheets, but I have noticed the rook is getting good minutes, playind stong D against the other guys shooting guards and always seems to be in the game in the end just for that purpose. Keep up the good work guys, the worm may be turning. GO HAWKS!

Great win for the Hawks today. It’s really nice to see them winning games even when they are not playing 100%, that is a sign that they actually have the talent to compete at a high level and that these wins are not just flukes.

I still think that the less Zaza plays, the better this team is as a whole. He completely messes up the flow of the game, can’t finish easy layups near the hoop and has no clue how to play defense. Even if half of Zaza’s minutes got divided evenly between Lorenzen Wright and Solomon Jones I think this team would improve. The sooner the Hawks can find a backup big guy who can crash the boards and finish to take Zaza’s minutes, the better off they will be.

Hey now…while I like to keep it positive, Clyde has been on the blog for years, suffering just like the rest of us through frustrating, senseless seasons of ineptitude. Newcomers on this bandwagon need to have a sense of history and of place. HB, doc, Clyde, Reese, Ken, Myk, and others have been banging it out wishing for times like these.

I don’t know how others feel, but as long as we’re talking basketball and being respectful, I think everyone is welcome to sit at “the liars’ table.”

Man I just thought the way Joe finished that And1 to put us back in the lead in the Miami game would catapult him back to his All Star form from last year. Boy he was playing with so much fire and emotion. When I heard we went off for 16 in the fourth quarter, I said “HE’S BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Man these young Hawks are playing with so much confidence and swagger.

Isn’t it funny, ESPN is stuck because they build all their shows around teams with individual play, but it’s the teams that play team ball that has the best records? Oh and what’s Seattle record. These guys always find away to try to demean a Hawks victory. g money i can only hope the t-shirts are remembered for what they really are an icon to a very difficult time to be a hawks fan. we are men at the table that dont hide behind the realm of false names and pretenses. the others who we can see right through are cheap imitations and are welcomed, tolerated but ignored when it comes to being relevant until the cloak comes off and they can reveal their hopefully better nature. right now what is seen is only a sick hole within them that even they cant see or understand. mean spirited and shallow as they hide in those same shadows. clyde will come around as he sees a real solid trend or disappear. i suspect the man he is will change his tune as i have met him, when the boat seems to be leaving for the playoffs and his criteria for success are met. it is a long journey to there and the ride is what it is all about.

g thanks for sticking up for one of our own of the many that are that come. others are just pretenders.

john gt, great job on reporting the atmosphere up there.

ryder, i hope you were as enthralled as he was or didnt end up on the side of the road for your unabashed allegiance to the hawks.

i know someone whose name starts with an R that is just waiting for the new year to stand up and shout i told you so or almost told you so as the hawks head to a very lusty level by the end of this year. what two more victories and he will have nailed it on the head for his prediction for their record by the end of the year only to be rebuffed and called out by a naysayer. :-)) it will good to be very wrong. my expectations have been met so i am pleased with the way things are developing and i thought i had set a pretty good bar for the young fellas.

for now: ALL ABOARD!

Great win last night guys. Im loving the way we’re playing right now. Marvin is really starting to come up big for this team. 20 points a night will make people forget all about those 2 pg’s from the 2005 draft. Good all around effort from everyone.

ZAZA plays no defense…. I mean come on man, dude is huge and gets taken advantage of on the regular. Acie is looking like the 4th pg right now behind Speedy. turnovers, turnovers, turnovers, and he cant hit a dam shot -jumper or layup come on this is the NBA. Yeah I know he is a rookie and has a gimpy ankle but once again this is the NBA. When T Lue comes back he should be our second PG -even though he dribbles to much -he makes timely shots which i really dont see from the rook

lasch, careful with that old stuff. ;-))

back to ya for the holidays.

mike, daughters are so cool to be around and have a relationship with. it is huge for them going into the future. sons too, but that relationship seems to come more naturally for most as i have one of them as well and not to demean him in any way.

see lars with her, really good film. i think you will both enjoy. both of my girls walked out of there in very good spirits.i couldnt breathe during one part of the movie it was so funny to me. excellent sensitive acting and directing for the content which could have been presented as sleezy or deranged. ultimately, it is about compassion and support which is a healthy theme for this time of year.

peace guys.

Imus, I have to admit you are right about ZaZa. He looks as if he’s trying but Shells plays better D. As for Acie, I say give him some PT. He was actually very good at the beginning of the season. Perhaps he’s like AJ - needs to play more in order to get comfortable and settled. I think he’s going to be fine once he gets comfortable with the subtle changes that have gone on in the last month and gets some extended minutes. Even Shells plays better when he gets into the flow of things. The 2nd unit has to come together - which is now??

Thanks Doc, we will check it out. I have a son too, but like you said it’s nothing like hanging out with your pumpkin. She just turned 17, but I still call her pumpkin.

For all you Clyde haters, use your oxygen mask before you speak. The air is thin where the big dogs roam on this blog. Clyde is and has always been a big dog round these ways; these guys have been putting it down on this blog back when no one bothered to talk about this team.

All the old heads and my man Sekou Blog Z was my therapy when I was so sick all I could do was pick up the trusty lap top and check out the blog. No way are guys going to let some new low foyers on the set come in and insult the guys that help build this blog. Now that wouldn’t be right.

Oh please. Being around a long time doesn’t mean anything when all the person does is bash the team. If you people would be ok with a guy who kicks your friend when he’s down, but doesn’t lend a hand when he gets back up, then be my guest - but you should realize that IS the kind of “fan” Clyde is.

And the holier-than-thou “we’ve been here longer” BS needs to stop RIGHT NOW. Just because people haven’t been posting on AJC.com doesn’t mean they haven’t been Hawks fans. I’ve been posting over on Hawksquawk for years (under a different name, of course) and have been a die hard Hawks fan since the cradle.

So seriously - stop throwing the “you’re not real fans” crap just because people haven’t been posting here as long as you. It’s BS.

Hawks version of “Mike!” Michael Cooper that is - JC… Good teammate & class act: “I was worried about coming back and messing up our chemistry,” said Childress, who missed four straight games prior to Friday with a groin injury. “But we had it going again, man. And it’s nice to be on the other side for a change, the winning side.”

doc, my friend, I SURIVIVED! Miraculously, my wife saved me from getting razed mercilessly as we watched Young missed that 3 pointer. The trash talking I endured on the metro was music to my ears, as all I kept hearing was, “you would’ve lost if Gilbert was playing” which my wife responded, “Well if he had played the Wizards would’ve been beaten even WORSE!”

She’s right you know. But Sekou next time you me and JohnGTfan (i’ll check out your myspace tonight and leave a comment) have to hook up at the ESPNzone down the street.

I’m still excited from last night so I have much rest to get to. Second place, baby! Oh, and screw Miami!

Man am I enjoying the winning days. I bet the whole organization is too.

Clyde, ain’t it great winning at last? Sell enough t-shirts to go to Rio again, my man. You deserve it.

Clyde=moron, why do you come here seeking only to harass one guy? This is why people are saying you’re not a fan. I don’t even recall you saying anything that’s independently basketball related. And by the way, Clyde doesn’t bash the team. As many times as you’ve seen his signature phrase, I’d think you realize it’s the coach and gm he’s not so happy about. And if you had been around these few years like so many of us other regulars (whom you seem to despise for that very reason) you’d know that. As it is, I don’t see what YOUR contribution as a hawks fan is…Again, you only seem to exist for the sake of attacking one guy. Does it give you a boner or something? I mean really, you can’t even come up with a freakin’ name without using his name in it? Sounds to me like you care nothing for Hawks basketball, rather your obsession is…some guy….hmmmmm.

Funny, been reading his and everybody else’s stuff here for 3 years. Argued with ‘em, reasoned with ‘em. You don’t seem capable of the same intelligent discussion. So all your insults apply to you more than they do anyone else. And yes, those who have been around since the inception of the blog or near to it DO have a mutual respect for each other. You despise the regulars because you feel like you’re not part of our “club.” Problem is, there is no real club and you’d be welcome if you weren’t acting like the weak, cheap-punk a$$ moniker you’re using.

Like I’ve always said, good thing the majority of these discussions take place in cyber basketball world. In person, well…people would be finding new ways to learn respect and common courtesy. And I would be thoroughly enjoying my contribution to such lessons…now I’m sure there will be some sort of pseudo-testosterone charged reply and challenge. As usual, it will be useless here in cyber world, although childishly amusing. Heh…

Ken Strickland, you have got to be just completely stoked, my brother. Kudos to you for remaining positive when many others of us began to fall and were hanging onto the wagon by our fingernails. Here’s to hoping things remain this good and you can serve some of us a whopping huge slice of I told ya so pie!

All of this is funny…about a month ago, the Hawks were 3-7, and deep down on the inside, I was considering buying a shirt from Clyde, despite how much I tried to think positive. I was playing with the Hawks on NBA 2K8, even had the 2nd best conference record, but I switched to the Warriors, b/c they weren’t doing it for real.

Now, in an 8-3 December, things have turned the corner a bit for the young birds at a very opportune time with the East playing weak right now, save the top 2 teams. Clyde, you make a great point; teams like the Bulls, Cavs, Heat, Nets and Wizards (with Gilbert back) are gonna be trying to sneak back into the thick of things post-AllStarBreak. As for the Hawks, we have a 5-game West trip after that weekend. If we’re playing like this then, then we can stop holding our breaths anticipating a crash from this recent spurt.

But that’s news for February. For the time being, Joe should be getting ‘Player of the Week’ honors. He might even get Player of the Month. We asked for him to be a leader; he’s getting better as the days pass. It’s about time his shot came back (4 treys last night).

Interesting, the ‘youngest’ and ‘rebuilding’ teams, the Blazers and Hawks, are the league’s hottest teams right now. Thanks Santa…

Merry Christmas y’all, Go Hawks!

Hey all,

I gotta agree that the “Clyde=moron” tack is not helpful. However, I do think that Mr. Moron (let’s just call him that, shall we?) had one useful point - it’s neither helpful nor fair to deride every person who is posting on this thread for the first time as a Johnny-come-lately, for three reasons: 1) Not everyone is as modern and tech-oriented as you cats are; 2) For those who are tech-oriented, there are other Hawks blogs (the ones at RealGM and Hawksquawk come to mind), so not being on AJC isn’t indicative of anything; and 3) Even if they ARE just becoming Hawks fans now that they’re winning - isn’t that something we should encourage rather than discourage? I take pride in the fact that I’ve stuck by the Hawks through the bad times (especially since I don’t even live in Atlanta anymore!), but I don’t think that gives any of us a right to put down people just because they are only now starting to pay attention to the team. People have different priorities; nothing wrong with that.

Anyway, I’m still not 100% sold on Woody yet, but I like what I’ve seen these past few weeks. This is the best I’ve seen the Hawks play since the days when Smitty, Deek, and Mookie were wearing Hawks unis - and I have a feeling this team has the potential to go deeper in the playoffs than those cats did.

I’m cautiously optimistic, fellas, but I’m proud to say that for the first time in years the “optimistic” part is now outweighing the “cautious” part. And that’s a great feeling.

The Good 1. Entertaining to watch. 2. Share the ball well (but see later). 3. Smoov has improved on the offensive end tremendously (but see later). He loked really impressive as a passer to the interior, especially from the high post. Critical improvement. He let the game come to him (but see later). 4. Marvin is terrific at getting space inside the defense to shoot; quick, makes efficient catches, and makes efficient stops to shoot. He is breaking down the defense as much as any point. Bravo! 5. Horford is terrific. He needs to get more touches, many more, if this team is to reach its potential. 6. JJ was awesome in the last quarter when he was decisive about taking over; I am less enthusiastic about his play when he is not in that mode. Room for improvement here that could have huge effect on this team. 7. I like AJ’s game and always did. He positions his point of attack; does not let defense dictate to him, at least not without the defender having to work harder and accomplishing a lot less than he wants. Beats the point of attack for the defense down mentally. This is huge. Unselfish is a hackneyed term. This guy is an old school, Catholic league guard. I really like him.

Points of Improvement:

  1. Smoov seems to rest too often when playing the 4 and on the off side. Stationary in a spot where it makes it easy for his defender to see him and the floor, and does little to improve his opportunity to make catches. He could learn from Marvin here. Marvin has a knack for getting his defender out of position to keep up with what’s coming, even if it is just two or three steps, or one and a jump catch. Smoov needs to get more interior touches off of receptions that he creates. Will create more inside out play, which this team still badly needs.

  2. Perhaps Smoov can use more short rests. I’d like to see Shelden in the 4, provided an effort is made to penetrate with the pass, especially by JJ.

  3. I think JJ needs to do much, much better in seeing the value of the penetrating pass. In the first half, several instances where he caught, had a guy deep with a defender behind and sealed, and did not throw it. Saw the guy and held it. Once, after letting the moment pass, he still had an entry, and waved for ZaZa to come out and screen for a middle drive.

This, in my view, is a little thing that can have huge benefits. One time Joe threw it in without hesitation, his defender sagged back a step, before the defender’s backward momentum ended, Joe had it back in his hands and hit the three. I think it was in the forth quarter.

  1. This is a Woody thing. I get the business about inverting a guard and forward and having a big guard post a smaller defender but don’t like it with this club. I mean I really, really don’t like it.

They tried to exploit AJ in such a position and got nothing. In fact, threw it away. I’d much rather see that effort go into getting the entry pass into the 4 and 5s; I love the inside out play (you think) and think that they must be given enough touches to get some with advantage so they can score the ball easy. This is crucial.

Ditto with posting JJ. He don’t need to get it there to be dangerous, and saw way too much clock being wasted in efforts to get him the ball there.

Coaches need to be figuring ways to get it to the 4 and 5 early in the offense, instead of twisting things to be too clever by 2 (whatever the phrase is.

Lastly, they need to fly me down to Hotlanta and force Smoov to listen to me and play around with a few concepts with respect to his shot. That, and buy me and my boyz dinner at a place of their choice (youz all my boyz). Smoov needs to soften his chest, especially the left side, and especially needs to soften his left shoulder. His distance control (touch) will show up in a way he has never experienced it!

As long as they keep winning, I do not mind Woody and Billy sticking around. Hell, if they make it to the playoffs, its pretty difficult not to keep them around a bit longer. I mean no need to rock the boat as long as your sailing smoothly. It will all come down to where they are in April.

Flash- What are you talking about? You seem like a honorable man but softening his chest and left shoulder. What is that? I read your last comment on what he should do with his shot. You obviously know about body structure but also not much about shooting. Some of the best shooters in the game have unorthodox releases.(Michael Redd, Manu, Reggie Miller) There are lot of shooters with great form that miss quite often.(Salim & JJ) Smith’s problem is shot selection and rushing his shot. Two reasons for that. One he is always getting the ball when the shot clock is running down and the second reason he is not catching the ball ready to shoot. When his legs are straight it throws off his shot like every other player. Watch the difference in games when he catches the ball and gets his legs under him. You make it sound so easy to do. What did you shoot from the field in school?

Matt, understood. But how do you encourage somebody when they burst on the scene only to pick one person here and attack them? No excuse, no defense for that. As for first time fans or band-wagon hoppers-on, hey the more the merrier. But people who come here only to attack, rather than talk ball….I’ve got nothing for them. Period. I thought this pic looked cool. Just JSmash putting in work. His jumper is fine. It’s when he shoots it that’s the issue at times. It’s all a matter of timing and IQ. When this freak of nature (compliment) figures out how to focus when he’s shooting (passing, dribbling, etc.) like he focuses when he’s swatting shots, he’ll be so dangerous. We’re waiting, JSmash…

Ray,

I never defended him - all I did is say that he did make 1 useful point. There’s a lot of politicians I don’t like, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t ever give them credit when they say something I do like.

I’ve had my differences with Clyde, but I certainly don’t think he deserves a one-man hit squad. All I was saying is that if you tear the guy down, tear him down because of his acts and his attitude - not just because he hasn’t posted here before.

Also, Ray…the reason I stopped posting here the past few weeks is because of the increase in the number of homophobic comments around here - some of the worst ones by Mr. Moron himself. The dude’s a punk and a coward - call him those things. Don’t come down to his level by making thinly-veiled homophobic statements, like by saying he pops a boner when he thinks about Clyde. I just don’t think that sort of talk is right. There’s plenty of ways to tear a punk down that don’t involve implying he’s gay. I’ll just leave it at that, man.

I’m visiting the family in ATL for the holidays so I’ll be at the game on Wednesday - hope to see some of you there.

tb remember, maybe before you got here, i was an apologist for woody for what he was given and to bk for having to be a gm for a financailly strapped and legally hung ownership called a pollyanna more than once. i do think there have been critical errors that they have made as well as some things done well. woody just keeping the team togeher has been huge during difficult times. just the same he has been floundering in other situations as a new head coach given very little to work with.

as far as keeping woody, the organization has already thrown down the gauntlet and said heads might roll if the playoffs arent reached. i translate that to mean it is a given he stays if we reach the playoffs. i dont have a personal agenda and go more with the flow of what is the trend and what may surprise you of how i defend woody at times.

i am really not here to go after anyone in particular and more to talk basketball and like flash hang out with the guys and gals that visit. it is more about the relationship and appreciation and acceptance of where folks are at, you know. i truly respect your comments and concerns; that doesnt mean i have to agree with them bro.

now before everyone gets all gaga, look only to the thrashers to see where some things end up even after the goal of making the playoffs are made. or look at the bulls to see a young team struggling on a similar path. not too high not too low is a motto.

matt, you know all are welcome here. how they are received is determined by what they bring. it is their responsibility to accept it as just that and not because they are a newbie joining in whenever they like. it is just as you did when you had the time after the birth of your first or whenever you get the chance. from a personal standpoint i dont want to be involved in a blog that supports personal attack, so when folks come to attack, i along with others attempt to keep it clean. go to other blogs to see how unpleasant that is.

if the person, as you have identified and the object of this discussion and you refer to as mr which he may not be in gender and certainly not in attitude which i call moron, comes back and says i want to be involved here, identifying himself as the moron and then assumes the name he puts on other blogs where he roams then fine. otherwise, as you put it and i put it, (mr) moron is a coward and certainly not even close to being in the same class as clyde and will be received as he comes; his choice his determination of fate. as he has seen there are more than one to shove the drivel back at him.

well folks, the long awaited answer is in on speedy. fifty-fifty chance on success going forward as a point guard in the nba. we have retired one contact for a guy in a similar situation. hate to see anyone go down like that with injury.

the determining factor on success is how large the area is that has to be returned to “normal”. if it is larger than an inch then he is doomed to progressive deterioration and an arthritic knee before his time. unless they have scoped him i imagine the full extent isnt known therefore prognosis is guarded. for a guard it is more difficult maybe than a big. kenyon is back after two, amare after one, webber never the same, terrell brandon, penny hardaway, mashburn and houston never the same and stockton and kidd still were able to play after theirs. tough rehab and few promises. very tough decision.

Matt, let me say first that I understand what you’re saying. And, I get your point of view. Actually, I meant nothing along the lines of homophobia or any sort of gender preferrence. I think your sensitivity to the subject led you to believe that. When I made the “boner” comment, I meant it like “does attacking a select person every time they post turn you on…make you happy…etc.” It was the actions of the guy I was pinpointing, not alluding to any sort of sexual preferrence. I mean, how do you come onto a blog and all you want to do is go after some anonymous guy? I mean really, he only goes after Clyde and has nothing else to say whatsoever. I really don’t get it. Does he know Clyde personally? Why Clyde? Besides, he (if he’s a he) doesn’t even know for certain that Clyde’s a guy (no, he is…but that’s not the point), so I’m still not sure where you get the homo ideas from as far as what I was saying. Sorry for the misunderstanding (it was my fault), and I realize the comment was certainly not necessary.

Also, I’m not asserting that you are overly sensitive, just that when you saw the preceeding comments made by the original offender, any following comments (such as mine) that seemed to be of the same nature would probably and justifiably set you off. Again my apologies, as it is often the sender’s fault rather than the receiver’s when a communication attempt fails.

Real quick for the record: I wasn’t accusing you of defending the “moron” person. I was just stating that his actions are indefensible. And, his point about not being a longtime poster (or newbie, whatever) is certainly valid. However, he himself rendered that point invalid (in his case)by coming here to bash one particular guy, rather than contributing to b-ball talk. That’s why he got jumped on. Same would happen to anybody else (myself included) who does things like that. Nobody likes a troll. Lastly, I don’t “veil” my comments. I call people by name and say what I mean. No need to hide, whether here or in person. I despise cowardice. And I have nothing against people who are just finding the blog. I once was such a person too, eh? The more the merrier. Anyway, have a great holiday and enjoy the game on Wednesday. You and your family have a great, safe time. Be careful on the roads. So far my wife and I have been fortunate. We traveled to Pennsylvania for the holidays to see her folks. It’s coooooooooold

Yeah, hate to see that happen to anybody. Hope that whatever decision Speedy makes, it’s the best one for him in the long run. Despite my unhappiness with the situation as a whole, it’s better to lose money and a player than to have the man try and work through the rest of his contract here…only to shorten his career overall and have a bad knee the rest of his life.

On the flip side, AJ has had a chance to show his worth, Mario’s chances of becoming a solid NBA player have increased due to simple exposure, and Acie is getting more experience than he otherwise might have.

Not saying Speedy’s injury is inherently a good thing. Just saying that the benefits of his absence are being felt and seen clearly.

It would seem to me that speedy claxton’s decision should be simple. Either have the damn surgery or retire. What more is there to contemplate since he obviously can’t play anyways. Is he just going to sit on the sidelines the next two years and cannabilize the teams salary cap? If he retires we get almost complete salary cap relief and if he has the surgery now he could possibly contibute next season. It’s freakin time to get a second opinion and make a damn decision like right now! He’s been paid long enough to do nothing.

I remember Richard Steadman did Eric Swann’s microfracture surgery about ten years ago. He was able to get back onto the field, but he was never his “old” self. Probably a quarter of the guys I played football with in college had no cartilage in their knees. Speedy’s pain tolerance seems to be very low. He should probably just retire and be glad he got his contract before he was injured so catastrophically injured.

Ray,

That’s crazy, man! Pennsylvania is where I live these days. Whereabouts are you at? I make home in Philly, although I’m in the ATL for the holidays.

Sometime last yr I went on such a rampage against Clyde that DOC had to call me out. The thing that made me back off was how Clyde responded to my tirade. He gained my respect at that point. I have recently called Clyde out, but I have never, and I mean never, questioned his committment or his intelligence. Quite often, it’s not what you say as much as how you say it.

I’ve never lost confidence in this teams potential and/or abilities, but I did lose confidence in coach Woodson’s. I even called for his dismissal. But right on que, both he and this team did a 180 and now we are all proud of them.

I was a postal carrier and often I would go out on my route extremely angry usually because of some mgt stupidity. But once I was on my route, it only took one smile or one kind word to instantly change my entire attitude for the rest of the day. In one month, these Hawks have changed the attitudes and hopes of fans that have been so negative and so frustrated for so many yrs. Sometimes you have to experience pain and disapointment to maximize your appreciation of success and pleasure.

CLYDE, while I look forward to a change in attitude toward the Hawks playoff chances, I don’t want you to change as a person, OK. GOOD LUCK AGAINST THE PACERS YOU HIGH FLYING HAWKS!!!!!!!!!

doc, appreciate the insight on Speedy’s options. Let’s put aside for the moment him returning to the court. Is it in his best interest to have the surgery just to give himself a reasonable chance at fairly pain free non-basketball activity in the years ahead?

8shooting flash* I’m not talking about his release. He pronates just fine. What is missing is a connection between the energy created by pushing into the floor and the extension of the arm. What is present is too much shoulder (any amount is too much and he has alot), the rear deltoid in particular, which makes distance control a crapshoot.

Why don’t you try Smoov’s style and you will see what I’m talking about. If you are a righty, point your feet to the left of the basket, which will bring your right side forward. Arch your back as you bring the ball up and straighten your spine and especially your right side. When you try to shoot, you will find that your right shoulder is in the shot.

Now, I’d suggest squaring your feet, but you do not shave to. Let your breast bone sink back towards your spine (look at MW for that) and your front and back ribs feel soft. You can straighten your spine some as you extend your arm in response to the flow of energy from the floor it will happen, and the spine will pretty much not be fully extended until after the ball has gone, in what we in the bizz like to call follow through.

The latter will feel like the ball will not get there if you are a shoulder user. So I would suggest starting with really short shots, 2-3 feet. You will notice an ability to slow down even the release and the ball flight will get more arch, will fall through the net. Then, as you get comfortable, step back. Good luck.

First of all, great win against Washington. I taped the game and watched with eager anticipation of a hawks win. Mykhalc, I’m happy with Marvin’s play on the offensive end and he has shown some signs of trying on the defensive end. Although, he was empty in steals and blocks against the wiz.

But again, it has been the team play that is impressive. 80pct free throws, 58pct 3pt shooting, 49 rebounds and winning in spite of having more turnovers than their opponent.

Now that the hawks are winning it will be interesting to see if woodson is able to develop/reward all of his players with the opportunity of playing time. What must Solomon Jones be thinking to see Mario West get precious playing minutes. Not sure what to think about the short lease on AC Law. Yes, he made a mistake and did not know the amount of time on the shot clock and in turn allowed a 24 second violation to occur. This caused him to sit the rest of the game on the bench.

Hopefully, Woodson and the coaching staff are able to balance the need to win with the need to build the confidence of their rookie point guard.

11-5 since Nov. 21st.

The team that BK put together is coming together. All of the things he coulda/shoulda done not-withstanding.

He is also not about to blow it up now to acquire a fading vet at the price of our prized youth.

It could be that he intends (and can) sign both Josh’s and still have room for Marvin’s extension.

If Acie can develop into a capable NBA starting PG, it would seem that we have the contending team that we want. The ceiling is very high.

Woodson I have long questioned. It seems though, that the players meeting moved the players to listen to the coach and the result is Woody appears to be an improved coach. I think he still lags way behind the best at X’s & O’s, but the work put in to make sure the young talent plays with fundamentals seems to be paying off.

There is the potential to make moves. We are very deep and our rotations pretty set.

I also think that the Hawks are only at the first stage of their success. This team will be more dangerous in the coming seasons, even with little change to personnel.

Good job BK and Woody. Good job Hawks.

and i noticed WOODSON’s short lease on ACIE too. but i think more than anythin’ ACIE is just not fully recovered yet!!! i still got a lotta confidence in the young PG!!!

hate to see SPEEDY or anybody for that matter have their dreams or passions taken from them. wish him nothin’ but the best!!! but he still can’t shoot!!!LOL

I’m for, I’m against it we all come to debate for the topic be the Hawks to which we congregate

for a holiday or two we can be rather nice wishing each other well wihtout giving Old Spice

Thanks to Sekou we blog Thanks to doc we think more Let’s not forget Clyde He runs the shirt store

While many can stop by our virtual blogging Hoops Bar The regulars we appreciate, especially those like mykhalc checking in from afar

Yes we need Ando & Astro Joe as we share feelings, facts and jaw and occasionally wandering to Mike Vick and the law

But it’s really AC the Law we focus upon when he’s finally healthy are his minutes on

Now that AJ has put some stability on point will we see more Hawks fans packing that Philips hoops joint?

Big Al may be a forward who plays Hawks slot five But the spirit he brings let’s his team thrive

Clearly I’m off on this holiday eve Thanks for this blog it make it fun to believe…

Wow, what a story coming out of Chicago, huh? Geez, you’d think Paxson would have at least allowed him to stay through the holidays. Woody, thank your lucky stars man.

And about those holidays, to those Jews among us who’ve recently celebrated the 8 days of Hanukkah; to those Muslims among us who’ve just completed celebrating the 4 days of Eid al-Adha following Ramadan; to the Christains among us who are on the cusp of celebrating the birth of Christ; and to those Africans throughout the diaspora who are on the cusp of celebrating Kwanzaa, I wish you the very best of YOUR holiday.

Sekou, many thanks for what you do.

Tb,

Here are the Hawks salaries for this year. You can find the info on hoopsype.com…

JJ 13.5MM Speedy 6.3 Marvin 4.5 ZaZa 4.0 Horford 3.7 JChill 3.6 TLue 3.5 Zen 3.2 Shellie 3.2 AJ 2.8 JSmoove 2.2 Acie 1.9 Salim 0.8 Solo 0.7 Mario 0.4

Hawks have the second lowest payroll in the NBA. To give Hughes those kinds of $$’s when JS and JC are going to be looking for an extension this summer might not be the wisest move. Hughes’ current contract has about 2 more years on it too I believe.

CONGRATS TO JJ!!! Let’s keep it going Hawks!

hey newk, say it for all the pagans, nice coverage! kidding but interesting all of some very high holidays surround the winter soltice. it only reinforces we are all brothers and connected from same source. peace, namaste, shanti to all my bretheren!

man, did paxson ever lay an egg in not getting roy and does his coach ever have to suffer at christmas. wonder who can come in and rescue that organization or is it one less on the list for the hawks to cover during the season?

more rum? say goodnight ray! and ditto to manny t.

hughes, could only help on defense as his offense is suspect since he broke his wrist two years ago. and is he going to replace jj as he is a two not a point? liked his game to three years ago.

The KOBE STOPPER is also available. For defensive purposes, of course, but he can score, if asked to do so. Probably not a good fit, from a locker room perspective though. Just throwing shi. out there. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL.
