DANGER: Hate-free zone!
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
ORLANDO - If you’ve come here to spread evil, you’ve come to the wrong place.
This is a hate-free zone today.
Why, you ask? I’ll tell you why. All is right in the sports world.
Most of that has to do with two things: Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the New England Patriots remaining unbeaten, unblemished and untainted by the mess that has become professional sports these days.
When Floyd whipped the Golden Boy last year you all panned me for celebrating what you thought was a lackluster victory. But can anyone debate his virtuoso performance against Hatton? It was a smashing performance, mostly Floyd’s gloves smashing into Hatton’s dome and rib cage.
The Patriots were just as clinical in their destruction of the Steelers, another smashing success that this Anthony Smith character (absolutely no relation) should take to heart. Nearly every touchdown I saw included No. 27 in the white jersey getting scorched.
But it’s not just about those two juggernauts in their respective sports. I’ll even toss a bone to you Hawks fans and remind you that in spite of all the turmoil that’s gone on this season, your team has actually shown a little moxie the past few weeks, overcoming themselves mostly, to post a 6-4 record in their past 10 games.
Sure, we could nit-pick the Hawks like crazy and point out some of their many shortcomings (uh, let’s see, where do we begin? Anthony “Kimbo Slice Jr.” Johnson isn’t the guy you expected to be your No. 1 option at point guard this late in the season. Joe Johnson still isn’t shooting or playing like the All-Star he was this time a year ago. Zaza Pachulia’s mug is on milk cartons all over metro Atlanta. The Mike Woodson witch-hunt train continues to steam along at light speed. That dreaded injury bug has crept back up on the Hawks a little over a month into this season. And there’s already been a team meeting and we haven’t even made it to Christmas break yet.) but remember, this is a hate-free zone until further notice.
Besides, for all the venom directed at this team, and there has been a ton of poison floating around for a group that’s actually performing decently in relation to the rest of the Eastern Conference teams if you consider what the expectations were at the start of this season, the Hawks have shown some serious signs of life in the past few games. For example:
Josh Smith is recovering well from his early season bout with I-luv-my-perimeter-game-itis.
Marvin Williams is asserting himself in ways few people imagined when they were panning him for what they thought was his feeble offseason preparation.
Al Horford showcasing the type of consistency and low-post proficiency the Hawks haven’t seen from an inside player in well, what seems like forever.
And finally, and perhaps most telling, your team is playing competitive basketball while not playing anything close to its very best. (As one regular pointed out to me, that near loss to lowly Minnesota the other night looks a little different now that the T’Wolves have popped the Suns). That means there’s a chance to play much, much better down the road.
Now all of the good vibes could be wiped away with a lackluster showing here against the mighty Magic (who have mastered the art of the fast start this season and last) tonight. We’ll have to wait and see how that turns out.
But again, this is a designated hate-free zone until further notice (I won’t even throw darts at the laughable coaching search going on with my team right now, no mater how much I want to crush Lloyd Carr for not exiting stage left without continuing to make a mockery of our once proud program), so I’ll be curious to see who falls off the positivity wagon first.

Last week was a good week for this team. I know they laid down for the Pistons, but that was not the important game. Beating the Timberwolves and Memphis was more important. Two home games against weaker teams. In years past, those were the games the Hawks lost.
I am excited about this game tonight. It is a chance for the Hawks to measure up. They are playing the best team in their conference on the road. Enough of the excuses. No one wants to hear about injuries. No one wants to hear about BS player meetings. It’s time for these guys to measure up.

As for your UofM coaching search…You will miss Carr. All you UofM fans wanting to run that guy out of town, you just wait. 4 and 8 happens. 3 and 9 happens. Just five years ago, it would have been absurd to suggest that Miami or Nebraska would fall off the map. Look what happened.
The UofM football apple cart is tipping. Look out below!

Sekou, I too believe that hawks are building confidence. I went to the Dallas game in which they won and it looked as if they had all the confindence in the world. I also went to the Washington game in which they looked disinterested and lackluster. But now Marvin, Josh, and Al are realizing that they have a good enough team to win on some nights without their all-star guard being M.I.A. for the most part. But as I follow the stats, the hawks are getting much from the Point guard position. That is where we are hurting. I think A.C. Law is going to be a fine guard in this league, but right now we need an all-star veteran point guard who looks to distribute the ball but who can also make shots and drive the lane if need be. That person I believe the hawks could get would be Andre Miller out of Philadelphia. With Lou Williams emerging up there it is only a matter of time before they turn that team over to him. Miller makes 8 mil per year, and his contract expires after the 08-09 season. So Philly could take either AJ or Lue to be a backup for Williams and if he falters either could start short term. And send Lorenzen Wright to help make the money work. Either 2 of the 3 guys give a total of about 7.5 million in expiring contracts at the end of the season, and that would give philly a chance to free up cap room and sign a big free agent in the off season coming up. I hope the hawks can get Miller because that will then cement the hawks as a 6 seed throug 8 seed, and assure them of a playoff spot. Sekou tell what your thoughts are on this, I will be in Orlando as well tonight to watch our Hawks at Amway Arena Section 122 Row K. GO HAWKS!!!

I will say this about the Hawks this season.. keep giving me .500 basketball and I will be pleasantly surprised. I grew up in this town and remember when the Hawks actually were fun to go see and fielded competitive teams each year. Now, after what seems a decade of insanity we may have some hope. I can’t ask them to win in the post season but give me the last seed or next to last and I will be a very happy camper compartively.

The Hawks were 3-1 last week! Go Hawks! Now here comes the real test. No One in the league matches up with Dwight Howard outside of maybe Kevin Garnett. Toronto is a good team that just knocked off Houston yester day by 13 and Chris Bosh will be amped playing here in front of his Georgia Tech faithful. And Detroit…We all saw what happened last week with them. All of this being said, when we are playing up to our potential we can play with anyone in this league! (See Dallas, Phoenix)When we come out lackluster we don’t have a chance. (See Washington, Chicago)All and all this will be a telling week for our Hawks! And Sekou, I like the Hate free zone rules beacuse for the hating that a lot of people have done on these blogs all season, if the playoffs started today, The Hawks would be in the number 7th spot!! Let’s go Hawks!

Juice,
No update on Speedy. I think something has to give between now and Christmas. You can’t go into the new year without some idea of what this cat’s future is with this team. If he can’t come back from this injury they’ll no doubt have to consider some sort of retirement/medical buyout scenario that allows the Hawks to move on cleanly and Claxton to exit quietly.

Big, big kudos to BK for hanging onto that 3rd pick and getting Big Al. Would anyone in their right mind really want Gasol over him at this point (that was a trade kicking around)?
This kid is the best thing that has happened to this team in a long, long time, and his upside is huge. If he’s playing like this in the first months of his rookie season, what’s he gonna be like in 2-3 years (especially once he develops some niftier post moves, which I see coming).
Sekou, AJ has been fantastic the last couple of games. I never thought Id see him play like this again. He’s also been a great leader. Big props to that guy (and he deserves some of those props in the media, wink wink). Still, we need Acie to make this his team. I can’t wait to see him get a bit more assertive out there (his ankle looks like it’s still boterhing him).
2 tough back-to-back games. I’m hoping for 1-1, but obviously would take 2-0! (These are two teams we played pretty well last year, so we’ll see).

Where is soloman jones? why not start Aice law .. anthony “self checked” johnson is killing our starting unit. Why is coach woodson tripp’in on salim…he gets no playing time. And the junklord is a bust. For a #5 pick he looks like a bust. if he was a 2nd rd pick then he is performing up top par. but with that being said as a team they are playing about right where i thought they would be ..floating around .500 all year.

Thanks for the update on Speedy. Hopefully they will go with the buyout option and focus on the PG of the future.
I don’t know if bringing in Andre Miller is the right option at this point. Between AJ, Lue, and Acie I like the rotation Atlanta has right now . Now if this team is still struggling come February I might change my mind.
For now though this team needs to show that they can compete this week against the upper echelon of the East.
We’ll see where all of the “hate-free” talk will go after tonight’s game.
I fully expect Clyde to break out the T-shirts after Friday in full force.

I HATE EVERYTHING AND EVERYBODY AND ALL OF YOU ARE A BUNCH OOOOF, hey, wait a minute, this isn’t the Falcons site is it, HEH HEH. Just kidding.
It seems both the coach and players are on the same page in regards to pushing the ball. Of course, Woodson still has some lingering effects from his BKnight, LBrown indoctrinations. In the last gm we had a big lead going into the 4th qtr and Woody instinctively slowed the OFF down. Still trying to protect a lead instead of increasing it. We all saw the results.
Another good sign is players like MWilliams and JSmith are no longer waiting for JJ to initiate the OFF. They’re both being aggressive and taking advantage of the DEF by taking it to the basket. Everyone needs to concentrate more on making FT’s. We’ve lost at least 2-3gms at the FT line. I hope Zaza and Chills play tonight, and effectively, because we’ll need help against Howard. GOOD LUCK TONIGHT HAWKS.

The guyz are playing well,I was really surprised how we performed against Memphis.
AJ played the best he’s played all season on saturday. Josh Smith is playing like an all star right now… I cant believe a few short weeks ago i wanted to trade him for Beidrins…no way i do that deal now. I cant say enough about Al,this guy is the real deal. I thought Gasol would go for big numbers, but thats hard to do when you are posting up near the 3 point line. Al’s defense inside was the main reason we won. On the flip side Rudy Gay is making BK look really…… Gay will be an all star next year. One can only dream what a Gay,Smoove,Horford front court would have been like.
Andre Miller would be a good acquisition for us because Acie still looks like a rookie-maybe his ankle is still hurting. He makes 8 mill per and his contract comes off after next year.Whats the debate about lets get him now. I think Miller,Law and AJ would be a good rotation. Tonights game is a good test for us -im pretty sure D.Howard will put up like 28/12 but if we can hold down the rest of the team we should be okay. HAWKS!!!!!!!

Why are we playing the Pistons every 5th game? Isn’t that a scheduling violation? And when do we get to play the Knicks, can we play them every 4th game?
I wonder if Law is holding back his offensive game or if Woody is the culprit? Either way, I’m hoping that he stops trying to be a “pure” PG and starts being himself. It’s not as if we’re scoring 120 PPG and don’t need his scroing. I’m guessing that if he feels more comfortable taking 8-10 shots/game, that he will also get those 6-7 assists that we need. We need Law drawing fouls in the lane, attacking the basket, looking for his shot and facilitating the offense. What we don’t need is this guy restraining himself to fit into the pure PG box and rendering himself ineffective. Take the reigns off and let this guy ball.

Marvin Williams needs to improve just a little bit at the FT line. He’s the type player that will go to the line around 7-12 times a game, so he’s got to take full advantage of those opportunities. Josh Smith is using the backboard, and it’s working. I believe Josh Smith is finally starting to learn how to use his offensive skills in games. AC is a good penetrating point guard, and he will eventually develop chemistry with this team. His shot will come too, and he’s not afraid to take a shot when he thinks the team needs it. Al Horford is the reason I believe the ‘07 draft was the deepest since ‘03, and could potentially be deeper. He’s 6’10” 245 right now, but he will develop strength and gain weight (have you guys heard that Oden is up to 280 ?) as he plays/trains in the NBA. He runs the floor like a small forward, and right now I’d say his handles are almost on par with our small forwards. He’s attacks the basket or uses a nice baby hook. He also has a good mid-range shot. On the defensive end, he plays good post defense in man to man situations. He’s a great rebounder, who grabs the ball often at it’s highest point. He’s such a well developed rookie with a lot of potential. AC Law has shown me that he can score in the NBA, and once his shot returns he will be that other outside shooter that we need in our starting line-up. He can take it to the basket on 2 or 3 players after returning from an ankle injury. I’ve seen him make a few bad passes, and a few good passes. However, I think he’ll improve once he understands how his teammates think and move on the court. All you people knocking Marvin Williams need to remember that when we drafted Marvin that he was a project. After 2 years in the league, I believe the 6’9” 230 SF is starting to develop a consistent offensive game, and his defense is decent. However, he is improving year in and year out. He will be a good rebounder once he learns to box out consistently, and once he uses his length on defense he will be able to frustrate a lot of forwards. He needs to work on developing a post game. How can you people blame Billy Knight for our problems ?
Anyways, what this team needs is chemistry and a handful of offensive plays to run in situations where they are forced to run a half court offense. Since this is a hate-free zone, I’ve got one thing I will say about Mike Woodson. He actually responds to his critics, even if it is only in the first quarter. Stick with the up-tempo offense, and start working with your assistants to develop some offensive plays. This is your chance to establish yourself as a REAL coach. You can practically eli minate the cloud of 3 god awful seasons that hangs over your head. Utilize the talent in the roster to your advantage and you give other coaches nightmares not vice versa. Good luck. GO HAWKS!

Can hubba butt Marvin and struggling Joe Johnson slow down Rashard and Turkelou? Can Horford contain The Man Child? Can we count on Woody to put in Lorenzen or Solomon for some (EXTRA) hard fouls on Howard? Will he start Acie instead of AJ to make Jameer play defense? Can we play a 60 minute ball game against an elite team? Can Woody let go of his pride and let the boys do what they do best? RUN? I SURE HOPE SO!

My optimism about the Hawks is guarded. They have beaten 2 teams who now have a winning record (Dallas and Phoenix, without Amare). Charlotte is 7-12, Miami is 5-15, Minnesota (2 victories by Hawks) is 3-15, Milwaukee is 8-10, Philadelphia is 7-13, and Minnesota is 6-14. The good news is that the last 2 years they would not have had even 9 wins, but at least they are making progress.
The problems remain the same, Horford is a power forward who must play center, Josh Smith’s best position is small forward but he must play power forward. I wish we had a center like Tyson Chandler who could average 11 points and 11 rebounds a game to pair with Horford on the inside, while letting either Marvin or Josh play the small forward position.

Characterizing the calls for Woodson’s firing as a “witch hunt” doesn’t accurately reflect the situation. A witch hunt implies that people are just out to get him, without any legitimate reason. Personally, I’d like to see both Woodson and Knight jettisoned, but considering there’s nobody in the front office to make those decisions (will Knight fire himself? One can hope, but it’s doubtful), I guess we’re stuck with the incompetence for a while longer.

SSI Fan, Lamar Oden is playing pf for the Lakers and said it was his natural position. Why cant Josh S. play pf? It’s called VERSATILITY. Why would we want to lose his great shot blocking ability inside, while letting him run around chasing the LeBron’s of the world? We’ll leave that up to slow footed Marvin, Chills, Mario etc. Besides, have you seen Smooth’s 3 pt %? This guy is a pf, if you ask me, and a good one at that. He’s 6’9 for Christ’s sake. Astro Joe, I agree… Woody needs to let Acie do him (he was the best pg in college for a reason). The thing is, he started to look like that guy in that Charlotte game, and then got injured. Since coming back, he hasnt looked 100% by any stretch of the imagination. The progression of Acie is truly one of the most intersting plot lines for our Hawks this season. Okay, all hate aside, I still think we can chalk tonight up as a loss for the Hawks. Simply fouling Dwight Howard isn’t enough because most of the time, he simply drives through the foul and dunks the ball anyway. You have to deny him the ball, and then when he makes his move, hack him so hard that he can’t finish the play.
It’s imperative that the Hawks keep the tempo up pace tonight. They can’t let the Magic set the pace, they have to keep it moving in the open court.
In the half court offense, their strategy should be to get their perimeter players (and Josh Smith) driving to the hoop. Maybe they can force enough pressure to get Howard in foul trouble. If I were Mike Woodson, I might consider running my offensve through Horford tonight. Put the ball in his hands down low, let him open things up and pass it out to guys moving TOWARD the basket-Joe, Marvin, Childress, and Smoove could all be very effective that way.
Even if they do all that, I still wouldn’t be surprised to see a 20 point blowout. I think the Hawks will end up reaching .500 sometime in January.

Sekou, I agree with what you said about josh smith and horford. However, I just don’t see any difference in marvin’s game. How is he asserting himself in new ways? Last season he averaged 13.1 and 5.3 rebounds and sucked defensively. This year so far he has averaged 15.6 and 5.9 rebounds and he still sucks defensively. Other than a slight improvement in scoring I just don’t see much difference in his game.
And why do you cut down your coach loyd carr so much? Didn’t he bring michigan their only national title in your lifetime? Sure he needed to go but he deserves some respect for the 1997 championship.

Hate Free Zone? HMMMMMM- Okay since there is no bashing of the GM and coach for the forseeable future,I want to take time out to give props to BK. Yes thats right BK. Right before the draft it was reported PHX would deal Amare for the no. 3 and 11 picks.
I was one among many who wanted this trade done, but im really happy we didnt make that trade.
Amare has had 2 major knee surgeries at 24 yo. I remeber Amare giving Tim Duncan the bussiness a few years ago-He put up 37 points and like 14 boards in the playoffs. I dont know where that player went, but im glad itz not here. Lately he doesnt look anything like his rookie year -so he may be digressing a little because of the injuries. Bk finally got it right Al has alot more upside -plays better D and rebounds more. Im not totally convinced that Amare is’nt a product of PHX’s system. Conley or Yi is all I heard before the draft…. Are’nt we happy that neither is wearing a hawks jersey I personally wanted Horford and the combo guard Stuckey, but itz okay i like what Acie brings.
O before I forget-I was lobbying for Sheldon to get more minutes. Upon further review….ahhh no thanks Shelldome should be on the bench behind Solo,L Wright, and ZAZA.
I mean really -after watching him closely for the last few games he looks horrible- missing dunks and very few rebounds. He is the same size as two second round picks- Jason Maxxiell and Craig Smith. Those guys are running circles around Shelldome-its actually kind of sad…. Oh I dont think this is hating -I was stating Shells is 6’7- short arms- no ups- no quickness…. THE TRUTH about SHELLY

JSmith said in an interview that for the 1st time, the Hawks have an identify. Teams now have to adjust to our style of play instead of the other way around. It seems we have some fans that haven’t progressed that far. They are worried about how we’ll match up against Howard, Turkelu and RLewis. Howard is the only one of those 3 that can play any DEF.
Why can’t we talk about how those 3 will stop the agressiveness of the new and improved MWilliams, the power, maturity and athletism of AHorford, and the aggressiveness and inside gm of a much more condident JSmith. If JJ gets his gm back, along with ALaw, why can’t we consider the matchup problems we cause other teams. Remember, we are 9-10 with Zaza and Chills injured, Law playing less than 100% and with JJ and Salim off their gms. If JJ and Salim get their stroke back, and we get our injured players back to 100%, why can’t we do even better the rest of the season? Think about it.

Sekou,
You and DOB always take the time to read the comments and post on your column blog pages. For that alone, you should be able to call a hate-free zone anytime you want.
In the case of the Hawks, and I have to bring out my inner Denny Green … THEY ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE!
Young? Yes. Growing? Yes. Prone to extreme highs and lows? Heck yes! Two years and one good signing away from being a potential contender? Likely.
… and I mean that in a good way. They’re just a game under .500 and currently hanging on to a playoff spot in the East. If we can just stay near break even through New Year’s, our schedule is much more favorable.
I’m still down for a 42-10 finish and the 6th or 7th seed in the East … and there’s no hate in that.
Later,
Don!

Terrell, The year is 2007 and soon to be 2008. The players are bigger than before. Barkely was an aberration. The elite power forwards are now 6’10” or taller, like D.Howard, C. Bosh and T. Duncan.
I admit that I’m not as sold on J. Smith as a lot of posters and if I were GM I would see what type center I could get by trading him. From my perspective he’s not tall enough to be a great power forward and he doesn’t shoot good enough to be a great small forward. I don’t think he is as good a one on one defensive player as some people do. The shots I see him block are taken by a person other than the one he is guarding. If he is such a great defensive player, then why was Horford guarding the best player, Al Jefferson, at the end of the Grizzles game while Smith was guarding Doleac. Also it was the man guarded by Smith who drove and scored the lay up basket that put Atlanta down by 1 with less than 4 seconds remaining.
Want to guess who’ll be guarding Howard tonight and Bosh tomorrow night? I don’t think it will be Josh Smith.
By curious

SSI FAN He guards the weaker player so he can come and help all his teammates who get beat. That is why it is called weak-side help. JS had dominated Bosh go check the stats and he guarded Dwight well last year in limited minutes. JS & Horford have to do to much in the post for this team to be successful. MW is the same size as JS and acts like he is terrified of post defense and no one here says a thing. Zaza got hit in the face last week and has not played since then. When exactly did this Tlue injury happen? JJ, JS and Al Horford log way too many minutes. Does anybody else realize that JJ and JS don’t come in the second half of most games. To ask that of a player every game without any dropoff is not realistic. Maybe Woody could let up off Acie’s back and actually run a play for him to help with the scoring load. Silly me that would mean he would have to make coaching adjustments. Does any coach have a worst % running plays out of timeouts?

Curious. I understand weakside help and the concept of team defense. I have never heard of a team putting its “best” defensive player on a poor offensive player so he can block shots that other players take. All the teams I played on or have watched put their best defensive player on the other teams best offensive player who plays the same position. Like Rodman guarding Bird, or Bowen guarding Lebron, or Raja Bell guarding Kobe. Blocking shots is part of playing defense, but being a great shot blocker doesn’t necessarily mean you are a gret defensive player.

SSI Fan: Get real! Howard, Bosh and Duncan are in substance their team’s centers! (Any other player on the Magic, Raptors or Spurs labeled the starting center is just filler.) The guys in the league these days generally just don’t like to play or be called center. There were a lot of big fellas playing center back in the day, but these days it just aint sexy! This isn’t the times of Artis Gilmore, Walton, Bob Lanier, and Kareem. Horford already is better than at least half the centers in the league. (Check his gaudy rebounding stats.) J. Smith is no small forward. (Check out his long-range shooting. Ugh!)

Who is this new and improved marvin williams fellow I keeep hearing about? I have watched every televised game this season and have yet to see this new cat play. I’m not drinking the marvin williams kool-aid anymore because every time I think he might be turning the corner he pulls a disappearing act. He is actually only one more mini-slump from dropping his average below 15 points per game. Please don’t tell me that 15 and 5 is what he is going to put up during what is supposed to be his breakout year.
Soon hawks fans want just be grumbling about the hawks passing on chris paul or deron williams. The list of players from the 2005 draft that are going to be better than marvin is beggining to grow. Guys like raymond felton and andrew bynum are starting to grow into good NBA players. And the worst insult of all is now that danny granger is having a breakout season @ 18 and 6, marvin may not even be the best small forward let alone player from that draft. YIKES!

I’m also looking forward to tonight’s game…I just wish I could watch it on TV!!!!! uggggh. Living in DC sux because I can only watch the games on gamecast. But anyway, this is a tough stretch. And for me anyway, the Hawks do not have to win all the tough games…but what they do have to do, is compete for 48 minutes and prove to theirself that they belong. I think if the Hawks can play out this month with a .500 record, they will feel really good about their chances heading into the new year.
Sekou Are you going to be at the game in DC on December 21 against the Bullets (I still don’t like the Wizards)? If you are, we’re going to be in section 210 (AWESOME SEATS).

Paul, I have never encountered you on this message board but you are delusional. When has marvin williams ever demanded the ball during crunchtime? LOL! That one alone tells me that your’e actually the one who doesn’t watch the games. And most of the time when he takes it to the rack he gets called for charging or dribbles it off of one of his huge feet. His rebounding and assists numbers are almost identical to last season and he is still a defensive liability. So I challenge anyone to tell me the big improvement in his game other than a marginal scoring increase from 13.1 to 15.6. Just using buzzwords like he’s more “aggressive” don’t impress me. Any NBA player in their third season should become less tenative and more “aggressive” because the learning curve alone allows a player to play more freely. Where’s the big improvement? Sorry I just don’t see it.

SSI fan, how can you say JS should be to blame for the last second basket against the Grizzlies? Most coaches teach you in that situation to not pressure too much because you don’t want to give a way a FOUL. If anything someone should have came and helped out, but the only person that could do that would be Smooth. A shot blocker and a perimeter defender (Bowen, Pippen, and more) is a totally different type of player. You said Rodman guarded Bird, but Rodman wasn’t a shot blocker.
As far as Smooth not guarding Howard, why would you put your ONLY defensive post presence on Howard, Bosh, or anyone and paralyze him where he can’t help the team defense more? That would be a poor coaching move. And although Woody messes up on offense, Woody does great on the defensive side, so don’t expect him to be foolish for that. And as far as if he can guard one on one, was it not Smooth that shut down Nash this year? Also was it not Smooth who had 7-9 blocks on Dirk ALONE during his rookie season (head up). If you think opponents aren’t aware of Smooth’s defense, notice how many teams drive when Smooth is on the bench compared to when he’s in the lineup.
By the way, how tall is Brand, Boozer, Gooden, Randolph, Okafor, May, Rahim, and many more PFs in the league. The PFs you mentioned; Howard, Bosh (who Smooth shuts down constantly), and Duncan, all three of those are match up problems for ALL teams, so whats the difference. The question is which one of those 3 players can guard Smooth (not to mention, Smooth shoots a better FT percentage than all of those, and at the end of the game that adds up)?

Hate free? Okay. The only true hate I see is between bloggers. Don’t know how you’re going to stop that one…
I.Mus Write, Acie Law looks like a rookie because he IS a rookie. And when you’re a rookie, missing games is like starting completely over, rather than getting back into the swing of things. As far as rooies go, I figure he’s not doing badly. I’m glad we have AJ around though. He’s playing some fairly solid games for us. Nothing worth writing home about, but fairly solid. Basically, he doesn’t hurt us much out there. Better yet, he doesn’t have to go to the IL every few games after playing a few games.
I wouldn’t mind having Andre Miller either, but what would that do to Acie’s development? Not to mention, what would we have to give up for him?

Acie law is solid, but he’s not what I thought he was coming out of the draft. He’s going to be really good but he has alot to learn about the NBA game. Y not- Acie and Miller -thats an upgrade over Acie and AJ….Lets not be fooled here our PG situation is still…. ahm bad…and Dre miller is alot better than some of the names I heard floating around here…. Calderon or Miller …. either one would satisfy me -that is if we didnt have to give up a whole lot.

Soloman needs to get some time when our big man are in foul trouble or when we need help protecting the basket. I know he still needs to get stronger but his athleticism is needed imagine him J Smoove and Horford as the front line when we need defense in the paint blocks would be flying all over the place teams woulds start leving their gameplan and start taking more bad jump shots.

Once last, early game comment: This is a good chance to see how Horford’s size relates to Howard. This ongoing battle about PF versus Center, gives you a starting point as to whether it’s unfair or unrealistic to look at Horford as a long-term projection as our primary big. I continue to maintain that he’s best suited to be a PF.
Oh, never mind, he just picked up is second foul in under 3 minutes.
Give this kid a break. Set him up to succeed, and work towards finding a way for him to be our power forward of the future.

ROAN ST, it’s rather obvious you aren’t a fan of MWilliams. However, you can’t allow personal feelings to get in the way of reality.
Of the top 50 SF’s in the NBA MWilliams ranks 16th in scoring, 6th in RB’s, 15th in BLK’S, 11TH in FG%, 9th in STL’s and 26th in assists. Personal feelings aside, if you can’t see that as an improvement over the last 2yrs, you’re not being objective.

I don’t like blogging during a game but I’m really impressed by the Hawks defense. They are double-teaming Howard on every catch and forcing him to make free throws. It helps have Wright available. I have to give Woodson credit for leaving Wright in even though Sheldon played very well in the first quarter, because as long as Howard is in the game either Wright or Horford should be on him. The Hawks look good when their hitting shots!!

HAWKS WIN! HAWKS WIN! Big win for the Hawks!! Great defense and good ball movement. AJ played great, JS played like and All Star this game. JJ was shooting better and still hasn’t played like he did last year! I hadn’t watched or listened to Orlando play before, but I really question the number of three’s they took this game. Either it was great for the Hawks. Hopefully Chills can come back soon, we can’t have to many more games where JJ and JS basically play the entire game. I have to give the coach staff credit on their defensive plan and getting the guys to move the ball on offensive. Another big game tomorrow night, but I’m just happy to be 50% in December.

How do y’all like Shelden now. I stated the last blog that sooner or later that his shot would fall. He was 6-6 from the field,100%, 7 rebounds and 1 block. He did all this in 11 minutes.
Now if Wright, and Shelden can give us some good minutes in the post, this team is play-off bound. Plus, if Salmin could start hitting some shots, this team just might go deep in the play-offs. Man, I forgot that Zaza and Chill was not playing. This team could be deep.

Am I the only one who thinks this team is a LOT better when Zaza is not playing?
From what I can tell the Hawks play defense pretty consistently — it’s boxing out that they have a problem with. It seemed like all game long today the team shared the ball well and the offense never bogged down. When the Hawks can do that and box out on defense they are a tough team to beat. Let’s hope this continues. This city could use some good sports news.

Speaking of rookie foul trouble…am I the only one who sees the similarities between AC now and Marvin of the past few years? AC gets called for a lot of offensive fouls just like Marvin used to. Marvin is more controlled when he has the ball now, and I’m sure AC will get there soon. AC looked great early with his dribble penetration and played good defense all night. And even though Horford didn’t play much tonight, that was a sweet spin move and dunk on D. Howard!!!

Our guards need to be in that game, and gives our guys rest for the next 62 games of the season. I want to see our guys rested a little more especially with a lead like that Go Hawks!! Much better to watch.

Ken, I don’t have anything personal against marvin williams. GEEZ. The guy is a complete bust as the number #2 pick and some people are in denial about it. The statistical garbage you posted is absolutely laughable. He averages .4 blocks per game and ranks 26th in assists? I mean there are only like 30 teams in the league. Marvin williams numbers from last season are almost identical to this years with the exception of a slight increase in scoring. Thats about as objective as it gets. This was supposed to be his breakout season and its just not happening. I don’t have a personal vendetta against him he’s a nice kid. I’m just stating the facts but if you want to live in a fantasy world and believe he is great then go ahead. Right now he is not even the best small forward in his draft class, that honor belongs to danny granger.

Very few players, in the NBA, can dominate a stat line while shooting 6-19 from the floor. Smoove may be the most enigmatic talent in the league, at this time. It’s going to be fascinating to see how his contract negotiations play out this summer. The parallels to AK’s max deal, on the heels of his rookie contract, are uncannily similar. The Jazz clearly expected AK to continue to develop a better shot, and more rounded, intelligent game. It didn’t necessarily turn out the way they hoped, though, with the talent they’ve surrounded him with, they are a formidable squad.
Ray and I were talking about this the other night. And, for all the talk about these Hawks being built to run, like a Phoenix-light, the Jazz may be the team we most have the potential to mirror. It starts with the AK and Josh Smith similarities (dominant weak side defenders, great finishers on the break, and very suspect outside shooting). Horford clearly has the potential to, optimally, develop into a low-post, power forward presence, like a Boozer (probably not as proficient of a scorer, but absolutely a better defender). If you look at the player Williams was, coming out of Illinois, the physical similarities to Law are valid (6’3, with the solid frame to take contact when attacking the basket, and still either finish, or drop a dime). And I don’t think Williams was viewed as the assist machine he has become, coming into the draft (though I think just about any starting PG in the league could post 8 dimes a night with Boozer inside, and Okur fading to the open wings). But I can imagine Law having Williams’ upside. JJ is a clear upgrade over their young defensive specialist, Brewer.
So, if you’re using the Jazz as a blue print, we lack an Okur, who can free Horford to man the post in the half-court offense, and provide a consistent 3-point threat for the kick out, out of the double team. At this stage, as has been discussed here to death, Smoove has been the recipient of those dwindling-shot-clock dumping passes, to very poor results.
And, if you’re going to build a long-term front line out of Smith and Horford, neither of whom will ever strike 3-point fear into the hearts of opposing defenses, then Marvin, and any collection of spare bigs, Zaza, Shelden, Wright, combined with an expiring PG contract, make for a logical package to seek out an Okur-type player.
The other positive about such a scenario is that it’s probably easier to find an Okur, than a dominant, defensive-oriented big, given the dearth of those types of young centers.
Of course the other thing the Jazz have is Jerry Sloan. I won’t bother going into the implications of that difference, as far as coaching goes……….Watching the Jazz play the Spurs the other night was a stark reminder in what a well-coached team looks like, when it comes to making the extra pass and executing in the half-court set.
But given what I’m seeing, I’d be more inclined to seek a replication of the Jazz rather than any other team. An easy argument could be made that JJ and Josh are superior to the Jazz’ 2 and 3. Can Law and Horford quickly (if ever) approach the production of a Williams and a Boozer? And can we take some of our remaining assets, and find a big man who can hold his position, on the defensive low block AND step out and knock down the 18-23 footer?
And can we find a coach who could optimize such a line up (no offense, Woody, but I just don’t think you’re ready for prime time)?

Ken, I see your in happy land when it comes to BK and the hawks unbalanced roster. Horford is absolutely not a five. Jesus christ ken did you not watch the game tonight? Horford played 9 freakin minutes because of foul trouble trying to defend the post against howard. Thats not a knock against horford because the kid has serious game but he’s a prototypical power forward and not a five. The hawks are playing well but we still need a center for the long haul.

Ken, seriously, I’d already given myself the FedEx award (long established blog joke for always being wrong), when you, after a solid win, go off on a massive attack.
Don’t take these divergent opinions so personally. I obviously don’t.
Lo Wright played 26 minutes of center tonight. Al Horford played 8, that’s EIGHT, minutes tonight. He got his second foul, trying to cover Howard, before 3 minutes had expired in the first quarter.
I don’t understand why my opinions are grounded in self-absorption, and arrogance, and folks like yourself are just offering your thoughts.
So, to clarify, I actually admitted I was wrong, this evening, before you (in all CAPS) stated I was too arrogant to do so. But that doesn’t mean I’ve changed my long-term concerns about the direction and leadership of this franchise. And until they actually make the playoffs this season, it’s ridiculously premature to unequivocally pronounce anyone here right or wrong.
We’re less than a quarter of the way through this season. If it’s your position that we should all just sit back and watch the season unfold, without comment or opinion, then Sekou and the AJC should just fold up the blog. Since that’s a fairly ridiculous plan, then this remains an open forum for divergent opinions and debate.
Calm down, old fella. We’re just talking about basketball……..

Weird Monday. Hawks, Sixers and Heat beat the Magic, Rockets and Suns. I’m guessing that the book makers had a really good night. Heat shot 59%, only played 7 players, and out rebounded the Suns by 17. Shaq had 18, 11 and 5 dimes. D. Wade had 31, six dimes and 3 steals, on 13-21 from the floor.
The Heat and the Bulls are the reason the Hawks will not hang on to one of those last playoff slots. That’s just the way it is (some things will never change)………

Josh Smith has way better overall numbers than Rashard Lewis. The Hawks are going to regret not getting that contract done this summer. Rashard got $118 million by the way.

If somebody offers Josh $118 million, I’m pretty confident you’ll see a sign-and-trade. Most folks felt like Orlando was bidding against themselves, and may have paid Lewis $50 million more than they needed to…….

I really don’t know what to make of this game. Josh Smith tonight really dominated the boards in a way he hadn’t done at all this season. He really went for them and showed some real determination going after the ball. I’m beginning to wonder if the Hawks just slack off on the boards when Horford is in the game because he’s such a good rebounder. I’ve see Josh and Marvin, particularly, be more aggressive going for rebounds in other games while Horford has been on the bench.
There’s some other things I’m at a loss to explain. Anthony Johnson had fifteen points on 6-9 shooting. Is it possible that, with all the extra minutes he’s played this year, he’s finding an offensive rhythm? I seldom look at AJ’s offensive matchups, but perhaps this was just a case of Orlando’s smaller point guards struggling with a stronger AJ.
Sheldon Williams-where has he been? I just wonder how his night might have gone if he hadn’t crash landed on his elbow. Signature play-he rips an offensive board away from Howard, scoops it up off the floor, and goes up to dunk it past Howard. I wonder if his early season struggles are perhaps a result of having his confidence shaken by the Hawks taken Horford, who is basically a Sheldon+1.
Great game Hawks. It got a 20 second highlight segment on Sportscenter! They showed Howard fouled, Howard missing a foul shot, Howard kicking out to Rashard Lewis who missed an open three, and Stan Van Gundy talking about how Howard was being fouled all night! Lol, somehow Sporstcenter managed to highlight a Hawks win without showing one highlight of the Hawks on offense.

One more thing, lets cut Marvin a little slack around here. He’s actually playing pretty damn good right now. And remember, he’s 2 yrs younger than Paul and 3 yrs younger than Williams. Hell, he could be a senior at UNC this year. And Roan St, to call him a bust before his 3rd season is over is LAUGHABLE. If he’s a bust, what in the hell is Andrew Bogut? A double bust. lol

Ando He might not get $118 million but he will get a lot more than he would of got this summer. You don’t have to like everything about him but this guy plays hard all the time. One last thought for the night: There’s only a few guys who make LESS money than Smooth on the entire roster. UNFREAKINBELIEVABLE! That has to be frustrating. I know if my co-workers made a helluva lot more than I did, for less work, I would be determined to prove my worth. Would’nt you? Even the rookies are depositing bigger checks than he is. That will all change at the end of the season, and thats a fact.

Ken, you don’t owe me an apology. You are a passionate Hawks fan, which I respect. I’m a passionate basketball fan, who continues to come to negative conclusions about the upper management of the Hawks. I DO make pronouncements as if they are truth. I understand that folks here tend to be polarized about both what I say, and how I say it. But, at the end of the day, we’re all within our rights to speak our mind. And, despite the widely divergent opinions, about the state of the franchise, I don’t know of a single regular here who’s long term desire is anything less than having a winning team to support.
We just differ in our beliefs of how long that will take, and if major changes are needed to get us there.
If there was a true prophet amongst us, I would hope the Spirit would hire him, or her, and get us to the promised land as quickly as is realistic.
And hey, if we beat Toronto tomorrow night, we’re over .500, at the quarter-season mark. Don’t let my cynicism about management detract from the early season performance of this team. I’m having a problem stopping to smell the roses, while I dream of what it would take to bring an NBA Championship to Atlanta.

What a game. What a win streak.
Very nice to see Shelden’s game. I’m convinced that he can be a quality full-time player in the NBA.
JSmoove looks like he might extend his Player of the Week into P of the Month; at PF.
Nice move Woody. Keeping Horford out was a good move. He got in foul trouble and the other guys stepped up (Shelden, Lo). He got some needed rest in a Hawks win.
If AJ can play anywhere near this level, we have a good rotation.
Bad move Woody. Not finding a way to lower JJ’s minutes. It can’t be that difficult to understand that a couple minutes less here or there will give him better legs in the fourth and keep him fresher throughout the season. This could become very important if we actually do get into the play-offs.

Continue to dream Ando, but I for one am just plain excited about what we have. The reality may be that there will not be an NBA championship until the payroll grows. No team with the second lowest payroll in the league has probably ever won an NBA championship. That aside, what the Hawks have done so far is laudable and an entertaining product. I’m enjoying the fights and watching the development of some great young talent. I knew last night would be special for Smoove because of the history of him and DHoward all the way back to high school. And for all the ink that they have gotten, the Magic still have exploitable holes.
Most on this blog are understanding how we are playing new millenium basketball and not in need of a traditional center. Great team defensive with quick athletic long talls can be a decided advantage over traditional bigs. AJ is playing like a pt who is getting comfortable with his teammates and playing every night.
MWilliams is definitely better than last season, Smoove is obviously so. If JJ can step it up a notch to be better than last season, it is going to be “sweet” for these Hawks come April. I predicted 40 wins at the beginning of this season. If this team gets any less than that, it will be an extremely disappointing season. If they don’t make the playoffs, it would be a travesty. They have everything that they need to make it. We don’t need Calderon, Miller or Okur instead of any of our starters. If they could be adjuncts for say Craig’s contract and a non-starter, then so be it.
The reality though is that you have to pay to play. Our team spend is $20MM less than those guys who compete to be in the middle of the playoff picture. Thus, keep the guys together this season. ADD a piece if we can find the funds over the summer. But above all, don’t let any of the starters go. It is coming into focus and I hope everyone sees what I see.

gmoney beautiful comments bro. it will come down to what is spent, as right now they are trying to do the impossible, win with a budget smaller than 90% of the teams in the league. that is a replica of what the marlins have done and wht the royals, pirates and have nots attempt do each year in baseball. there is no cap in either sport though they have “constraints” put on them. so it is not to be said that it cant be done but unlikely unless all those around them falter to some degree and these guys step up.
a couple of blogs back i said there is something wrong with jj. i think he is still adjusting to the timing that he has lost from his injury and all the disgust is as much at his own limitations that he is feeling that are hard for him to understand as he has usually thought of himself as superman. for once in is career he is having to taste a bit of he mortal. all told he is doing well and is also beginning to step back and be 1a, recognzing there is a 1b coming onto the scene.
no great team nor even a good team in the nba does it through one player and maybe just maybe he and the rest are beginning to give j smash his due as he begins to play within himself and by doing just that he goes through the roof in what he can do for this team. though there was some argument and disbelief i said this is j smash’s team and it will go as far as he stays within that realm of excellence. the team needs another star to step up. again there is no truly competitive team without two or better yet three stars on the team. some felt that negated jj’s role and i feel it only negates it if he lets it and doesnt recognize what is best for the team might be best for him to show his true abilities. we are now begining to see exhibits 1a and 1b on the court and when it is done right they win, when not they wil lose and that is why it is imperitive that marvin continue to grow and become more consistent with the seasons passing if this team wants to really come of age. marvin has to become the guy who can comfortably get 7-10 boards more often than not and show he has a bit of a scrappy attitude rather than the retiring player that only shows up if he has his shot i. e. a role player.
so it is 20 games into the season and i said i would wait til then to really assess what we have, in the light of what others have. i expect better things out of this team. yes, that is right and cant be denied. i was away last week and looking briefly from afar at the blog and was shocked to see some folks put a severe knock on these guys when they won. wow, does that say something about us? yes, it either shows how quick we are to disbelieve or be hyper-critical. you would think that this team was going for a threepeat and we all felt that style wins were important.
what was so special about the first twenty games is this team was learning how to wn. as a coach that is so vital to teach and for job security to see to start coming aroung. a win is a win. the greats win when they dont look pretty. tiger, jack nicklaus, larry bird all had that individual way to get the win when they knew they didnt have it. it is that team determination to gut it out when things are going against it that ultimately determines their fate. gee, we have had wins coming back and we have had wins when we thought they were giving it back. i ask you to seriously think about it; would the younger less experienced hawks have won any of those games? i will answer it for you, NO. simply put i think this team had to figure out the how to win before it could begin to get style points for wins. that is on a consistant basis. since this team has won 7 of 10 that begins to show all that they can whether it is on a bad day or when they are showing signs of cracking on a so so day against better competition or when things are not going their way. we can all win on the good days but it is special to those that can when it is not. look only to the knicks for talent and no guts and heart to see how bad it can get even when the money is there. that is the epitome of a team having to learn how to win, it has forgotten through its individual parts.
now how does the team continue? i think it will be on the continued play of, of course, the big three. it will also come as the more important role players continue to chip in their dues. al horford has pretty much brought a tremendous attitude for bounds even though he is only getting about an avg of 30 minutes a night. chills will have to continue to come up strong and aj continue to flourish in his new role knowing that he might have to give it over to acie when acie gts his act together whether it is later this season or next. finally, in short it will come as all these guys get infected with confidence and feel they can find a way to contribute any time they get into the game.
so i am beginnig to think this team might just do better than i expected just as this time a year ago i felt i had overestimated them for the measly 36 wins i projected last year. that is also a reality check on some of the teams that are in the east stumbling so soon out of the blocks either due to injury, lack of cohesion, loss of a spark. parts growing old or just plain lack of spirit/heart to get the job done. if you look around the east it is not a pretty sight. there are very few really good teams as we wait for the bulls and the heat to turn it around or on. maybe they will but the longer they wait the less likely we will need to look over our shoulder.
the cream is the celts, pistons and magic and we beat one of them last night at their place with no significant excuses sounded by the other guy. that is a sound beating. we can play with most of the other also rans in the east is my assumption now thought not every night. if j smash continues to come forward this team will go far. like clyde, i agree and say it is his team now and felt this way several weeks ago. how he gels that into the team game and how the support players continue to step up is important. the key will be to get the games so many of you dissed the last two weeks into the win column. yeah it is how many more of those ugly wins can be achieved will determine how far they can go.
though i am not ready to lose my head i can now see a legitimate potential for this team to crack the 40 win mark and i used the crack reference for a specific reason or emphasis. i see it clearly without the pipe. tonights game is important for two reasons. they are playing a back to back against a team in the east that has had a bit of the upper hand on them the past couple of years. it is a team that has the type of guards we dont like. it is a game of will.
let us take it one game at a time and see how they respond to the challenges and enjoy the wins and the effort as this team has usually shown at least that. it isnt gong to be a pretty ride but face it unless you are the suns, the celts or the spurs it wont be pretty a lot of the time.
just win baby! go hawks!!

I really believe if the Hawks can concentrate on getting the boards tonight they will have a great shot at taking this game. The fact that Wright came through last night actually shows what a veteran does. Haven’t played all season, yet comes through huge like that. And his presence not only kept Howard from getting dunks, but it also kept Howard off of the boards. Wright was always quicker than he looked.
Tonight, if they can keep Bosh boxed out, he will be looking for Smooth every time he touches the ball. With the fact that he is just coming back from missing games, and their other starter, Bargnani, is just getting back, the Hawks need to RUN!! You can tell from Law’s return, missing games can have you out of game shape. So why not take advantage of that with the Raptors.
With Bosh, Solomon should be able to get a lot of time and help give the starters some rest. If the team is tired, they need to hit as hard as they can in the beginning.

For the first time in a long time I followed a Hawks game from the opening tip, I was not interested in MNF game. I was pleasantly surprised to see the hustle and the fight in our team. Marvin Williams is quietly becoming worthy of his high draft pick, becoming the player he would have been had he stayed in school. I believe the Hawks will make the playoffs and possibly as high as a 6th seed in the eastern conference. I plan on going down to the Phillips for more than my 1 requsite game off the year.
Go Hawks, I believe.

Woody is pulling Acie every time he makes a mistake. Thats the Larry Brown way of learning. Instead of letting him play through his mistakes, he makes him sit and think about his mistakes. This might work with some players, but it doesnt with most. I think Acie has enough confidence not to let this bother him too much over the long run.

Terrell barron, in order to justify marvin’s draft position he needed to be the star of the 2005 draft class. That was the reasoning management gave hawks fans when they passed on two all-star caliber point guards. We just can’t pass on Marvin because his potential is so great that we think he is the best player in this draft. Even though we just drafted two forwards in the 2004 draft we can’t take a chance and pass on this guy. If you look at marvin in that context and you should, then thus far he is a bust, especially considering how badly this team has needed a point guard. And we still don’t know if we have the point guard position resolved because Acie hasn’t been able to get enough playing time to gauge what we have in him. And using age as an excuse for marvin is rediculous when you consider that he is exactly the same age as horford. Horford has moved pass marvin already as the third most important player on this team only after 20 games. Marvin is in his third season already and is looking more and more like a role type player. If your happy passing on two all-star point guards for a 4th wheel then so be it.

Regarding Hawks restricted Free agents this summer. Several articles have already noted the coming salary crunch this summer - deserving players like our 2 Joshes will not find max type money because it just doesn’t exist due to overspending by virtually the entire league the last 3 to 4 years - the exception will be Phily (likely the ONLY team under the cap), especially if they move Miller for expiring contracts before the trade deadline.

What a win!!! Measure up, baby!!
I think I was wrong about Sheldon Williams. Though I still do not think he was worth the 5th pick of the draft, the guy has improved. The opener against Dallas and the game last night were two games in which Sheldon was called on to take up minutes. He did more than that on both occasions.
He was crucial to beating Dallas in November and crucial filling in for Al last night. Big buckets, hitting the boards, and playing good D. Sheldon did all anyone could ask him to do. So, I have to give him his props. The guy has been performing when called upon. And, I think, getting everything out of his abilities.
Can the Hawks sweep a back-to-back. Anyone know how long it has been since the Hawks have won games on back-to-back nights?

Roan , and the rest of Marvin hater that still insist on calling him a bust. Get real this kid is still only 21 years old. I am also frustrated with the lack of effort Marvin exhibit at times, but he’s starting to show why so many people rated him so high. Marvin up-side is limitless. He still not complete but what player at that age is. But he’s starting to get in there and battle for rebounds, finish on the breaks, and play better defense.
RLewis signed a 100 million dollar contract with Orlando, he’s 6’10’’ how many rebounds and block shots did he have last night. As long as people keep comparing Marvin to two PGs that was drafted after him, there criticism of Marvin is pointless. Compare Marvin to guys play his position. At his age I’m willing to bet his stats measures up well.
Man the Hawks just beat the number one team in there division on there home court, improved their record to .500 for the first time in fours years, and guys are still complaining about Marvin. If we continue to see that type of movement and defensive intensity from the Hawks, they will definitely make the playoff.
For the first time the Hawks really look like a team out there, every guy seems to be on the same page. Woody is finally letting his assistant make a contribution to the offensive and defensive schemes. Everyone is getting a chance to contribute. As much as I have dogg the guy, you gotta take your hats off to Woodson for the game plan used in the Orlando game.
My boy Salim got in the game, he didn’t make any game breaking threes, but he still contributed. I would like to see Solomon get more action, but there will be games where Solomon can be used. The biggest difference to me is everyone is high fiving and congratulating one another. I seen Smoove talking to Salim trying to help him out. I’ m about the whole team, and I’m seeing a team effort instead of individual efforts. I’m really impressed with Acie Law he can do so many things to help a team. Acie and Al are everthing they were advertise to be and more.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that Hawks will beat teams like Orlando every night, and definite not saying that this team doesn’t need a big at the pivot. But we have our PG, no sense and giving up assets to bring in a PG, better to focus on getting a Big. The Hawks will still have ugly nights where you ask yourself what in the H was Woody thinking about, but this team is starting to mature and believe in each other.

You have to like the depth that we showed last night. We attacked them with wave-after-wave of NBA-caliber athletes. And the focus was there from each and every player. When we see that type of concentration in 2-3 consecutive home games (it seems easier for young teams to focus on the road), then we will know that we are truly ready to compete for a playoff birth. That is what I saw last year with Toronto, a young team that learned how to play consistently, game-after-game.
I’ll feel better about this team if vets like AJ and Lo are producing on a nightly basis. They just know how to play the game, the little tricks that make a difference. I enjoy our young nucleus but last night showed the value of some grizzled vets. Big props to Lo & AJ for bringing that “old man strength, calm & wisdom” at the right time.
