Step up or get beat down!

SALT LAKE CITY - There needs to be a sign above the door to the Energy Solutions Center (formerly known as the Delta Center during the Karl Malone-John Stockton era) that says simply, “Tip toe through these doors and you’ll end up on your backside.” - Hey, this is still a family friendly operation. I’m not going to press my luck.

But that message should be loud and clear for the Hawks, who thankfully don’t have to come back here for another year. Maybe by then they’ll have hit the weights long enough to gather the toughness needed to deal with a physical outfit like the Jazz.

Monday’s game wasn’t close after the first five minutes. It was clear what was going to take place - Rafael Araujo’s nose job on Marvin Williams was just a bonus for all you UFC fans out there.

But it’ll take more than moments of spirited action to compete at a high level. It takes discipline and a grit the Hawks, collectively, don’t currently have in large supply.

Now I realize that they were playing on the second half of a back-to-back, and that’s always a chore. But they didn’t last long trying to spar with the Jazz, a team no one in the Western Conference is going to want to mess with come late April.

Nit-pick the stat sheet if you want (52-32 on the rebounds and 24-10 on the assists says everything you need to know about what went on). But make no mistake about it, the Jazz won with their toughness first and foremost. And they’ll do it every night if you don’t stand up to them.

Tough loss guys.

Araujo’s probably just p** off that he’s the worst lottery pick in the last 15 years.

It would be tough to expect even elite Eastern Conference teams to win back-to-back road games with Golden State (a very good home team) and Utah (one of the elite teams in the league). You could see today’s beat down coming. But the important thing for the Hawks is to regroup and go into LA and give their best effort against a struggling Clippers team which may or may not have Elton Brand. To go into the All-Star break having gone 3-1 on a West Coast road trip will be huge for this young team, and the Clippers have been quite beatable recently.

I seem to remember reading that Marvin and Araujo had a problem in a Summer League game this past summer. I think Araujo knocked him down then, too, and Marvin went after them. Is that right, Sekou? I know Marvin got into a near fight with someone.

I think the team will show up for tomorrow’s game. They had better, anyway. Otherwise, this whole 5 game road winning streak didn’t change anything. Good test of character tomorrow.

I just am not that upset about last night. I guess, deep down, I saw it coming. Although, it would have been nice to beat Utah and make up for that debacle 4th quarter back in December.

How bad has the Jazz outscored the Hawks in the last 5 quarters of play? It has to be a royal ars kicking.

I heard someone on the radio call the Hawks DAINTY. No doubt that we don’t respond well to physical play. Fortunately, there are very few teams built in that old school fashion.

Clippers had to fly in from Detroit so both teams should be comparably rested (or not) for tomorrow’s game. Let’s hope that Brand misses another game and we can get our 3rd win on this trip.

Joe Johnson played 94 minutes in the last two games. Josh Childress played 75. Josh Smith played 65.

Those are your big three energy and scoring wise for this team. They were exhausted. It was game 3 of a 5 game road trip. Eventually they were going to hit the wall. Especially Joe. And for some reason Josh Smith sill played 35 minutes last night. There is no excuse for Jeremy Richardson not touching the court in a 30 point blowout near the end of the 3rd. No starters should have been out there.

Usually on these west coast trips a team from the east will have one of those games where fatigue becomes a factor, and last night was no different. Atlanta is a finesse team, and they will usually have success against teams they can run against.

Let’s take this moment to break things down a bit. Utah is a direct reflection of their coach Jerry Sloan, a no-nonsense coach who preaches discipline, hard work, and hustle to all of his players. As a result, they are never out of a game.

Now let’s go to the Hawks. They are a direct reflection of their coach, who has no idea at times how to manage a roster of talented players. Giving Josh Smith 35 minutes last night in a blowout? Do you think Sloan would do a thing like that? No, and Woodson insists on wearing out his top players each night. Eventually it takes its toll on a team.

It’s no wonder Utah blew them out. When you’re as mismanaged as Atlanta is, there’s no surprise. Hopefully they will take it upon themselves to take it out on the Clippers on Wednesday. Go Hawks!

I am a Hawks fan in Utah and I went to the game last night. I had been trying to be positive hoping the Hawks would do well against the Jazz. But, after the first quarter, my wife leaned over and asked, “What’s wrong with your team?” I tried to make up excuses that they were tired or that the officials sucked, which they did. The bottomline was that the Hawks had no rhythm or poise. They were not moving without the ball and seemed content getting beat. Maybe they just didn’t want to be in Utah and wanted to do anything to get out of here even if it included getting their face kicked in. Where is one’s pride to play hard no matter what? I just wished they put up some type of fight. Anyways, I will have to wait until next year for the hope they can beat the Jazz. I hate the Jazz!!!

Even though Deron had it on cruise control, with the early lead, his 9 assists, and domination over Speedy, were simply too obvious. There’s no need to look to deeply into this loss, because back-to-back road games usually generate losses for all but the very best teams.

Buuuttttt, beating two teams without their star PG’s, and then getting whooped by a team that had theres likely isn’t a complete coincidence.

Millsap had 14 and 9 in 17 minutes, to his more heralded, and less talented, top-5 bust, counter part, who rallied up 8 and 9 in mop up duty. Has anyone else noticed that Shelden, who was specifically drafted to provide low post shot blocking, has not had a blocked shot since January. Not too good. Billy is such a dumbass (a note on my always saying so: I start almost every post with an intention not to mention Billy Knight. Then, when I’m reviewing my thoughts, the conclusion that his awful draft choices have just crushed our rebuilding time frame comes pouring back into my head. It’s like I have Tourette’s, and I’m going along, offering up my subjective analysis of some basketball-related point, and out of the tips of my fingers I blurt, “Billy Knight sucks. Sucks. Sucky. Suckiest suckster that ever sucked. Why does he suck? He’s ruined this franchise. How could he be so stupid!!!!!!!” And then the Tourette’s just goes away, and I start typing calmly again. It’s truly a strange occurrence. Anyway, I just wanted everyone to know that I know that I say it over and over again. I just can’t help it. It’s true.).

BTW, Doc has a version of this. If he gets within 30 feet of NBA referees, he starts screaming obscenities. It’s quite a trip to watch the otherwise Zen-like Doctor, who primarily, calmly reflects on life as it unfurls, to simply start yelling at other grown men about how stupid and unethical they are. I’m glad to know that it’s not just me. That’s all.

Beno Udrih is still viewed as a very talented PG in San Antone, who just can’t get on the same page with Pop. San Antone is very slow, and it will cause them problems in the playoffs, which they know. I wonder if Speedy, who is still kind of Speedy, when he’s actually healthy enough to play, wouldn’t be a sound trade for SA and ATL to make. I doubt that they would take his contract, but they might, as their aged roster is running out of shots at another championship, and a quick back up to Parker, or a quick PG to allow Parker to play some two in the playoffs, might not be a bad pitch for Billy to make. I think that alot of NBA folks believe Udrih can still be a legitimate PG in this league. It’s worth consideration, and getting out from under Speedy’s bad Billy deal seemingly would be best.

Billy just sucks. He’s the worst. I just can’t believe how many mistakes he’s made, and how far he’s set this franchise back in it’s rebuilding (see, there that Tourette’s again)!

You guys can look at stats with Milsap vs. Shelden, but when they were against each other, Shelden got the best of Milsap. I remember atleast on two occasions when Shelden got the rebound, or drove in and got fouled. I didn’t see Milsap do anything on Shelden.

Tough game, hopefully the guys can rebound for tomorrow and whoop up on a VERY beatable Clippers team.

ando, it is because of an overactive cingulate gyrus is my assessment. mine gets carried away sometimes too.

bad game last night, even when josh seemed to come out hard in the third quarter and make something happen it just wasnt there. i mean one time the ball went down into the cylinder and somehow came back out after he had stuffed it in. it definitely went beyond physics and maybe into the realm of the metaphysical quantum world. if it hadnt been happenin to josh i would have suspected some ill spell by the t-shirt man, roll tide, trying to boost sales.

maybe it was the spell that guy named 123 has working. it seems that the guy must have been kicked out of his own blogging sand box by his utah brothers and had to take it out on us. his spell on himself seems to be one of a loser. we better go warn the cavs blog that in case the jazz win that they can expect him to somehow appear and think he is relevant because the mighty jazz have won again.

i know that i have refrained from the thug word in the past and have used it sparingly in my life, period; lately it has taken on a new connotation from when i was brought up. now, it seems to have taken on racial overtones. that said i will say that the guy that took down marvin really looks and plays the part and he is lilly white. if there was ever a guy that looked the part he is it, it isnt a slur except when it involves the actions. i will always give that guy his side of the street or maybe the whole street; i dont do that often.

dan, i was thinking about the same thing that in four quarters of play between the last 11 minutes of their last game and the end of the third quarter last night there was about a fifty point differential between the two teams. i guess it is an understatemment to say they found our weak underbelly and exploited it well. simply said, a very poor matchup for the hawks.

Speedy is awful, what a waste of a both cash and a roster spot, he can’t shoot, he can’t shoot free throws, if your game is predicated on speed and driving in the lane you better be an 85% free throw shooter. If we can trade him and there is a sucker out there, we need to do it.

Now how many of you really didn’t see that one coming? The Jazz are way too physical for our fellas, much as I like ‘em. And, they had one of the future top point guards out and playing tonight.

But don’t just concentrate on the flashier things. Look at how the Jazz executed their offense. All the cuts and runs, slashes, etc. They were getting back door layups and hitting easy shots off of simple screens. They had NO problems in the half court set. Then look at how our team ran it’s offense. ‘Nuff said, huh? Our offense wasn’t even stagnant, it was largely non-existent.

Ando, now you know what I was saying: just sit back and hold on. What happens, happens. The whole gist of this is that no matter what can be done to help things in any which way, shape, or form is not something I expect to happen. Why? The same reason you have Tourette’s: Billy Knight. There’s not a single sound decision/move that has been mentioned by you or any knowledgeable league or media-based individual that Billy has undertaken. It’s like he researches any suggestion or idea that anyone might have about this team and tries to do the exact opposite.

As sick as I am of the #5 draft pick bust thing, it’s only because it’s so true that it’s friggin’ ugly. Sheldon has, of course faded right back to a dark spot on the bench now that Marvin is pretty much back to full health. Sure, he gets some boards in trash time (more people are missing shots then). But like Ando mentioned, no blocks. And Marvin…what is his deal with not rebounding? 6’9” 230! Let’s see some freakin’ boards, man!! Cowboy the f@@k up! Antawn Jamison doesn’t have this problem, nor does Caron Butler.

Took a look at DraftExpress and was not pleased. Our draft position wasn’t favorable, nor was the projected pick. Tyler Hansbrough? Tyler Hansbrough! Okay, he DID put up 27 easily against Shelden when they were both in college, but that’s no HUGE comfort. At least the guy can score, although it won’t be nearly as easy in the pros. And he can rebound, which is good. But a shot-blocker/premiere defender he ain’t, in my viewpoint. Please don’t get me wrong. Not only do I like the kid, but I’m a Tarheel fan. I think what I may be seeing, however, is another Troy Murphy, although maybe not with the jump shot range. Oddly enough (ha ha), that’s still yards better than what we’ve got.

Honestly, we got killed. I saw the game (on business in Utah) and Arujo’s hit was nothing. Williams basically ran into his elbow as Arujo was turning with his hands up. I can’t stand Arujo, but I think this time (unlike the summer) it was accidental. THing is, bad things happen to crappy teams and right now we suck.

Help me out with this:

The pick we have from the Pacers is Top 10 protected, right? So, if the Pacers tank (which I think they will), the Hawks could end up with no pick whatsoever in the first round. I don’t think they will finish in the top 3 of the lottery. That would take luck and this team just does not get lucky.

Sheldon watches Araujo hit Marvin and doesn’t even move. Josh then pushes Araujo. Isn’t he supposed to be the Landlord? Other than rebounding I don’t see another NBA skill he has. The toughness and defense he was supposed to bring I don’t see it.

Hey Billy VOLMAN catch a freaken clue what pick is shelden and what was milsap HMMMM? lets see milsap was barley even drafted late in the second round who would you rather have ya milsap who led the ncaa in rebounding for 3 years in a row, just because a guy plays for north carolina or duke doesnt make him an nba allstar or a lottery pick for hell sakes, utah has the most second round picks and undrafted players in the leauge, that should tell you something, DWILL will be elected to the allstar game today, and everyone thought utah was insane for taking him over chris paul, i dont hear and bs from anyone now the kid can flat out play and head to head against steveie nash dwill 23-12 to stevie 15-8 and the jazz have beat phoniex 3 out of three times this year one with out booz in phoniex, so we dont think much of your win there when we have sweept them this year big deal, when you get good like we are its just another win not the freaking nba championship you crackers act like, maybe you should hire some scouts to go out and look at everyone else that plays college basketball instead of who plays in the acc!!!!!!!!!

rob123jazz, misery loves company. It took 2.5 months before this team had the 10 primary guys healthy enough to attend a joint PRACTICE (not game but PRACTICE). So I do NOT apologize for looking for the scales to be balanced. When we were losing games without JJ, Smith, Childress, Lue, Marvin, etc. no one put an asterisk next to those games. And this ain’t college football where you earn style points based on “quality wins”. Again, I don’t feel the need to apologize for looking for a little cosmic balancing act for the remainder of the season.

rob123jazz doesn’t know that we’ve all driven ourselves crazy (or to turrettes) agonizing over the selection of marvin instead of DWILL (as he puts it) or Chris Paul. Once again our PG was completely whipped and thus our team got whipped. When we play a team without a top PG were pretty good. Otherwise, we suck. Ray, Hansbrough is a more mobile, quicker version of Shelden. He’s got an unbelievable motor. He’s not a shot blocker, but he’s got pretty good hops. He’s an undersized four at the next level. He’s of no value if we keep Marvin and Josh. However, IF we were inclined to trade Marvin and a package of Shelden or anyone else, AND there were no viable point guard prospects worth reaching for at our draft slot, then he actually would be a pretty good pick here. He plays with such energy, that he’s going to be a solid numbers guy in the NBA. A starter, not likely a star. But his upside is way over Shelden’s. Not a center, but with no quality centers likely available when we pick, a great replacement forward if we move Marvin.

Dan, I don’t remember if Indy’s pick is top-10 protected, but people here have been arguing with me about where they would end up since this summer. I said they’d be around a 5 seed. Trust me when I say (I just looked at the standings again) that there is not a team in the East, not currently attached to a playoff seed, that has a chance to catch Indy. In a conference of bad teams and few quality big men, O’Neal and company will maintain their position, losing a spot to the resurgent Heat. But so will Toronto and Orlando, and Indy’s a solid bet to end up about where they are in the seedings. If you can show me a team, not currently in the playoff slots, and provide a compelling argument, based on their talent, as to why they’ll eclipse the Pacers, I’m listening. But, from what I’ve seen, it ain’t likely.

Expect a pick about where we would if the season ended today: 16-20.

You can check DraftExpress.com to get an idea of the question marks slotted to be drafted in that area.

We’d be far better off to package that pick, and Marvin, if it would get us a legitimate big man, either prospect or veteran. At some point, we have to commit to a young big, and hope he develops quickly and satisfactorily. We are the definition of the beggars who can’t be choosers, when we dump a lotto pick to Phoenix this summer.

d, cracker was used by the man from the west called robbie apparantly to demean and provoke. it was only chosen to bring up the issue of one of the jazz’ own players being from the cracker state. as a georgian and an atlantan i am not too offended by the reference as i know its real origin as it was in reference to folks that worked really hard as they cracked whips to get the job done. it was also the name of the best run franchise in atlanta history the atlanta crackers that i loved to go watch. no, i dont think the n word comes close to that and even though white and brought up in the south it brings nothing but the lousiest feeling in my gut that can be imagined. never used the term and just dont think you really understand maybe what some gentle God loving folks have gone through just to survive and not to be demeaned by such a term or the actions behind it, i have much too much respect for that. i dont even think there is room for it among their own race; it seems to be a priviledge in that context but it still gets the same gut reaction for me. that is their story not mine so i dont intend to be judgmental.

devastator, i hope you arent really going to go there, maybe misunderstood my intent and really didnt take the time to read all of the comments. however, if you do, that is something that i have seen all struggle for and many lives lost in its pursuit. tragically we fight on foreign lands to set folks free from their own sick bias’ no matter the color of those fighting together on their lands. now, do you really want to go there as we are all really ONE whether it has sunk in or not?

Consistency is not this team’s strong point. It will be interesting to see if they bounce back against the Clippers. This team can lapse into poor stretches pretty easily. At least JJ got some rest - Woody overdid it with all those minutes in 2 fast paced games against the SUns and Warriors.

doc, you shouldn’t have even bothered with that dumb son of a b***. We get some crazy, ignorant folks here.

Joe, I’m afraid you were a little late to the feed bag with my girl, Anna. When the first words, out of that little girls mouth, are, “Billy Knight needs to go”, you’ll know who her real Daddy is.

However, on the off-chance that it’s really you, I know that you’re 100% in anticipation of naming me your general manager. I mean, when it comes to the philosophy of hoops, we’re like conjoined twins, sharing one brain. It comforts me to know that I’ll be getting the call from you. If you could be so kind as to take over the team ASAP, I am committed to playing Royal, Salim, D-League 3 de jour, Shelden and your boy, Soloman, for the remainder of the season. We will then get the soft bounce, securing #1. I will draft Oden. Philly, devastated by missing out on the big man, will decide to completely rebuild, trading us Miller for hometown boy Speedy, and Marvin. I will trade Shelden for a new light saber, which I will present to you in a garish, opening night ceremony, at mid-court, with an outlandish laser show and many scantily clad dancers. I, personally, will feed Soloman sufficient, untestable human growth hormone, which I will acquire using one of Doc’s dusty, old ‘scrip pads, until he is 250 pounds, and looks, and, better yet, plays like a young Theo Ratliff.

Joe, the force will be strong with us. Because, if I am clear, Anakin and Darth are one (let me guess: right now you have a very disconcerted feeling in the pit of your stomach. How did I know?).

Ando,

I think there are three teams that could pass Indy, prior to the Playoffs (Miami, NJ, and Orlando). Indy could take a slide, it is not out of the question. The position of that pick could improve. I don’t see Indy making it out of the first round.

I’m hoping that Indy pick is somewhere between 13-15. That would be alright. This is a deep draft and I think a quality player may be found there, a PG maybe. Tough for me to say who would be there. I have not read up on any of the foreign players.

Here a name to throw out there, from the NBDL: Mateen Cleaves. I saw the guy a few weeks ago. He is back from a stint in Russia and looking good. He could help at PG. I promise you he will not get hurt like Speedy. Currently, playing for Bakersfield. Since BK seems into the NBDL experimenting, Mateen would be worth a shot.

If Jason Kidd pulls out of the ALL-STAR game with his bad knee and Redd has already said he won’t play, Joe Johnson has to be the last guy on the bubble.

Yo Joe don’t get hurt tomorrow night. You deserve a trip to VEGAS.

In the media guide it says that the hawks get the 2007 1st rd pick from the 76ers in that trade that saw big dog robinson go to philly is this true or does the pick go to the suns?

Ya we got beat down. I was watching the first quarter to see who the sub would be. Once I seen Woody continue to rely on half of the team for contribution, I knew it would be a blow out. The guys want complain but I bet they would have loved to seen the reserves go out there and battle before the game got out hand. Blame this blow out on Woody. You can’t ride your starter in the ground. Since the game ended in a blow out anyway, what harm would it be to mix in three reserves with your starters, that way you can give guys time to recover from the night before. If the reserves come out and compete with Utah starter the whole team gets pump-up, if not the starter still get a chance to recoup and try to make a run in the second half. At some point Woody has to realize he’s going to need the rest of the team, so instead of just using the reserves for damage control; give’em a chance to play in meaningful situation. Show the guys you believe they are capable of making a contribution. I know Woody is a good coach, but when you have a young team like the Hawks you know back to back games are going to be a problem. It’s the coach job to look for situation to get guys playing. What kind of contribution can you expect from your reserves if they never play in meaningful games?

Joe Johnson better go to the All-Star game with Jason Kidd out. It will be bitter sweet for the Hawks. We will have an all-star on this team but the Nets will have a rookie PG on their team that the Hawks passed on better than the three PG’s on our roster.

Marcus Williams will get minutes and show what he has got. The Hawks for two years in a row will look like lottery playing punks.

It seems like there have been good PG’s available in the draft for the last 3 years. If this is true, there should be plenty available in this draft. In the deepest draft in modern history, won’t our pick from Indiana be comparable to a top 5 any other year?
