Bobcats provide big dose of reality
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
No one throws a left hook like reality (sorry Kevin Garnett and Baron Davis).
And after a tumultuous weekend with the folks in Hawksville (watching the Bobcats beat down the Hawks on back-to-back nights as well as bits and pieces of the NFL playoffs and various other programming), I can admit that reality has leveled your boy Blog-Z, and probably quite a few others who pay close attention to what goes on around here.
Some things should be evident by now (those things and several other things collected over the weekend that I felt compelled to share follow):
The Bobcats indeed are better than you. Last season’s 3-1 series win by the formerly expansion Bobcats was no fluke. They’re tougher, deeper, more experienced and simply delight in smacking the Hawks around whenever they can. I think it’s one of those instances where the last two kids picked for a schoolyard game have to play one-on-one to see who should be the last guy. And one of them kicks the stuffing out of the other. TWICE!
My trade scenarios mentioning various point guards the past few weeks need to be amended to include a big man or two (duh!). It’s not like I forgot that the Hawks were soft as puddin’ inside. I just needed Emeka Okafor and Gerald Wallace to remind me just how soft that puddin’ really is. (S-O-F-T).
Before the season we conducted an informal survey about what Hawks player needed to play above and beyond his means this season. I said Zaza Pachulia and several of you dismissed my suggestion that ZP needed to come bag with a few new tricks this season. Vindication is mine (though, in his defense, ZP was working overtime after practice Sunday trying to rekindle that fire he showed time and again last season when the Hawks relied heavily on their young - dude is only 23 - center).
What a treat is must be for Bobcats coach/GM Bernie Bickerstaff to know that he’ll get whatever he asks from his players, 1 through 15, or they’ll be shipped to parts unknown. There’s a reason the Bobcats have a reputation for being the most rugged team in the league and a team that plays harder than anyone else. They’ve got judge and jury in the huddle at all times. It makes a difference folks, believe me.
Josh Smith was wrong for the two finger salute he gave to the fans at Bobcats Arena Saturday night, but no more than the idiot official who called him for a technical for taking off his head band and tossing it to the Hawks bench (and no, he didn’t snatch the thing off and throw it at the bench in protest of the call). I’d go off on a rant about how lousy NBA officials can be when they show up to work with chips already planted on their shoulders. But you’ve heard that one before.
My years of terrorizing Peyton Manning fans and Colts fans, too, are officially over. My son continued to wear his Petyon Manning jersey proudly, even after we moved from Indy to Atlanta. I warned him that he was rolling with a team and a QB that had NEVER won the big game. Well, while he was snoring Sunday night (hey, lil’ dude is in the second grade, bedtime is 8:30, no exceptions), Archie’s second born son was shutting up all the jokers (me first and foremost) that have poked holes in his legacy over the years. I can’t hate anymore. Great game. And a Michigan man (Marlin Jackson) made the game-saving interception (of another Michigan man, Tom Brady).
Once upon a time I was a movie buff of the highest order. Then Hollywood went on this horror flick craze that has sent me back to reading books for stimulating mental entertainment. If you want to read a good sports bio, try Oscar Robertson’s book (Pops got it for me for Christmas). It’s been out for a couple years. But it’s still a great read. It’s full of great basketball insight and tons of great history lessons. And The Big O was truly ahead of his time in terms of the way he played the game.
There are still a few movies that pique my interest. One in particular has me fired up. Have you seen the trailer for 300, the Frank Miller (Sin City) version of the story of the Battle of Thermopylae (all you history nuts know about this one)? Comes out in March. It’s going to be sick. They’re clearly marketing the film to meatheads like me who love football, a good hero flick with swords and lots of crazy battle scenes. If you didn’t see the trailer but just heard the audio, you’d think it was a commercial for a football movie. If you like that sort of stuff, this is one you need to catch.
Now that we’ve ridden the Hawksville roller coaster for the past 10 days (three steps forward, two steps back), who’s got the guts to predict what this week will bring? On the menu: road games at Chicago (Tuesday), at Boston (Wednesday) and at Orlando (Friday). We’re looking at a potentially five-game turnaround from the five-game win-streak I was popping off about before Bobcats-crack-Hawks-I. And yes, I’m getting out of the prediction business (at least where the Hawks and their upcoming schedule are concerned).

Just how much more Billy Knight and Mike Woodson do long suffering Hawks fans have to take?
Why don’t the ATL Spirit take action against incompetance?
As a season ticket holder I am officially finished because after 4 years of Knights reign of terror we are still at the very bottom of the league. Amazing.
Hint to Spirit: When you decide to blow up a team and start from stratch, your GM is supposed to make progress. Just a little.
And the excuses flow like river. Let’s hope that somehow the Spirit finally wake up. I seriously doubt that will happen because these guys are simply the pits. Nice job to owners for total incompetance rarely seen in professional sports.

First off, great game Peyton. I loved him at Tennessee, and I’m proud that he could finally get to the “big game”.
I don’t see the Hawks winning any games on these next ones coming up, unless they can start playing with more heart and helping Joe out.
Is Speedy dead? Or is he nursing his “injury” a.k.a lounging out sipping on a margarita while he makes 7 mil. a year?

three steps foward and two steps back, I would have to agree. I have been to a couple of hawks games and watched them on T>V and the one constant thing I see is no chemistry on both ends and the players but Joe looks lost when they are running a play. I have to say now that its time to up grade at the head coach. The team has no identity. they only play good at spirts for too long now, its time for consistency.

The hawks suck. And they will continue to suck until the re-vamp the orginization. A total make_over from top to bottom. Also Mike Woodson is a poor coach. I often watch games w/o seeing a inbounce play…Joe Johnson is a great talent, but I feel for him because nobody wants to lose…The hawks have 4 players that has the same role. The city of Atlanta needs its basketball. Fans wanna see a winning frachise, but until the owners do something about this problem, it will go on until the decide to sell.

Ando, I don’t understand the salary cap in the NFL that well, but I think I have heard repeatedly that if the Falcons trade Vick this season, they will take a HUGE salary cap hit. I’m all for giving him one more year under Petrino while we still have Schaub locked up (after we tender him an offer). Why trade someone if it means that you have to cut several other players (we can’t cut Hartwell yet for the same reason, so we’d end up getting rid of truly serviceable players to get relief from the cap).
Back to basketball, what would you expect Levenson to say, “we hate BK but we are powerless to do anything”? Of course they have to support their GM, much like the GM and coach have to support every current player on this roster.
What all Hawks fans must be concerned with is that we go from being the Hawks to being the Bobcats (essentially the only difference between the 2 are the quality of the draft picks and coaching staff). The Bobcats have a very “balanced team” full of high draft picks. They have respectable young talent at every position (assuming that Morrison and Wallace are combos at the SG and SF positions). But they spent pennies on Othella Harrington as their free agent acquisition this past summer. So while a new GM and/or coach would be nice (and is needed), if our owner maintains a bottom 3 payroll, I don’t think we will ever see the light of day. Again, see the Bobcats as exhibit 1.

Put Joe Johnson on the Bobcats, and you’d have a playoff team. That’s what you’d get if the Bobcats had the Hawks kind of money, and that’s what the Hawks would have as well if they knew what they were doing.

Re: 8:30 bedtime on a schoolnight. Major kudos to you. Would that parents who take their eight year old to Kroger at one o’clock in the morning followed your example.
Of course there is always “the exception that proves the rule” and I could see that being SuperBowl Sunday two weeks from now. Will the little tyke get “mid evening exception”? Of course it may be all a moot point with Peyton manning the offense (pun intended)
The game’s likely to be over at halftime and the little tyke will fall asleep on his own accord after another boring halftime show.
Re: Josh Smith…of ALL cities to play for and pull that stunt…you got Michael Vick staring you in the face as the perfect example of what not to do…while we’re at it, someone take away Josh Smith’s water bottle, to be on the safe side.

A Royal Ivey deserves alot of minutes. There you have your starting point guard. And a real starter, not 9 minutes guy. He is a reliable midrange shooter, a heck of a defender, and is all hustle all the time. Sure, he might not be the sexiest pick on paper, but that is what the Hawks need.
Let me get this straight. Lorenzen Wright starts, Zaza is the first big off the bench, followed by Sheldon, and then BATISTA. What did Solomon Jones do to Mike Woodson? Seriously. There has to be something. Does the kid have a bad attitude or something that I don’t know about? Whats going on?

Unfortunately what we are really seeing is the fallout from the ownership dispute. Belkin’s oppositon to the JJ deal meant that the remaining owners tied their flag to BKs mast - under any other circumstances this weekend’s results would have meant curtains for the underachieving coach and hapless GM. Even the one bright spot in BK’s reign, the signing of JJ, ended up hurting the Hawks because it stopped them from going for a PG in a draft that was rich with PG talent (you may recall that JJ was ostensibly bought here to play point). I guess that Hawks fans just have to wait until all that young talent is 30 years old and still in the NBA basement before there will be a management change - see you in 9 years :0)

If my memory serves me, the Battle of Thermopylae was where the 300 Spartans basically said that it was dishonorable to use bows-and-arrows to fight. Hence, the Persians just shot arrows into their fortification until they were dead. I guess the movie will make it seem a little more heroic.
This team completely p** me off this weekend. Between watching them get spanked by that garbage team, I had to watch my Yellow Jackets throw the ball away all night while Dickie V was his usual loud-on-UNC’s-jock self.
If there is a chance to get another big in the draft, we definitely need to do that. I’m not sold on Oden coming out this year since he doesn’t look quite ready and hasn’t said that he is only staying one year. Noah might fit into an up tempo game but we’ll see. that pick may be gone anyway.
I want Zaza traded while he still has value. He is about useless to this team (not as much as Lorenzen though).

but, pau gasol is now officially on the trading block… BK obviously likes him, as he traded for him after the hawks drafted him (great trade on his part actually)
so, i know gasol wants to go to a contender, but just out of curiosity, if it was possible, what would yall be willing to part with?
marvin, zaza, and the pick from indiana?
i personally would like to get rid of shelden…

I have no problems making predictions. The next three games are losses. I think they beat Philly on Saturday. Also, this team will not win one game in the month of February. Look at that schedule! No team they can beat.
How can Zaza take heat? Since when was he expected to come in to this town and be a dominate center? The problem is that Knight refuses to bring in help. If Zaza were a backup, we would all love him. He is being asked to do things he is not capable of doing. That is not his fault.
This season is a complete disaster. Changes need to be made. Here are my top three:
Go back Speedy’s bags for him and give him a nice swift kick in the a## out of town (let me do the kicking, please).
How about bringing in quality free agents? Just a thought. We have heard so much about our cap space. Let’s see it actually do something for us.
New coach. I want a fricking gostopo on that bench. You can’t tell me that the problems this team has had rebounding, getting up for games, and playing helpside defense is not coaching related. It is. Woodson is a great man, but I think he needs to go.

Mavid, I’m not sure that gasol is really that great of a player. His career averages are 18 points and 8 rebounds per game. This season he is averaging 17 points 7 rebounds per contest and at 26 years old he is in his prime. It looks like he has already peeked and will probably not get much better. I personally have no problem trading marvin and zaza but no way would I throw that pick in there as well. And why would a franchise be so willing to part with a 26 year old center in his prime if he didn’t have some serious warts to his game?

I would just like to pat myself on the back for saying we should trade for a big man instead of a pg and that would help us much more. I didnt watch too much of the humiliation this weekend, but two points did stick out to me.
I was giving Zen props for his play during the win streak. But it was obvious he was doing better because he wasnt facing a true center. Because when he did play against a center worth half a damn, he got destroyed.
The “pass to JJ and watch” offense has gone from a small sore to a full-blown infection. The hawks players seem almost intimidated to do something with the ball, and they are ALWAYS looking to pass to JJ and then watch. And now JJ takes on double and triple-teams and forces bad jumpers all the time. Why? Because he doesnt trust his teammates to score…and they havent done much to disprove him.
Im not buying the “Zaza is young so its ok” idea. Take a look at his arms…he doesnt appear to be very strong. And he seems soft when someone hits him. His positioning may improve but I dont think he is gonna be more then a 20-minute center who can make a decent starter when we need one.

as far as zaza, he appears to be the guy who misses al harrington the most this year as his numbers have dropped significantly. it may be too crowded inside without another proven scorer to take some of the heat, therefore his open shots, looks and lanes arent there and his flaws are magnified.

Mavid, I just read some news on gasol and you were right he wants out. The latest news I have heard is the grizzlies want deng and gordon for gasol as the priciple players in the deal. The bulls will have to throw in p.j brown to make the salaries work. Memphis supposedly will also be willing to throw in hakim warrick.
The problem the hawks would have in dealing for gasol would be making the salaries work. Gasol makes 12.3 million so ZAZA and marvin wouldn’t be enough to get the deal done. Since memphis is rumored to be interested in gordon( small sg) and deng( sf). How about marvin and salim for pau gasol? Who could we include to make the salaries work? Think memhis would take lorezen wright back if we included him in the deal? Anybody else out there got a good trade scenario for landing gasol? Remember you have to make the salaries work in order for the deal to be realistic.

There should be a requirement that any new blogger who visits this blog MUSt read at least 1 write-up about the ownership situation before they get to write anything. That way, we won;t get the “why don’t they fire BK or Woody” and “why aren’t we trading for this player or that player” comment. If you’re interested enough in this pathetic franchise to take the time to blog, then you should really take time to understand the current ownership nightmare.
Simply put… owners pay for players salaries. Owners have maintained bottom 3 payroll for 2-3 seasons. Owners in legal fight. Don’t know if they will own the team beyond another 9 months. Why invest in a house that may not be yours in 9 months? Especially if the value of said house has already been set. Why fire BK/Woody if the entire ownership group can’t decide on a replacement? Thus, this team remains in an endless loop of poor performance, lack of talent, ineffective coaching and incompetent GM leadership.
In other questions?

roan st, are you assuming that Chicago does not offer any combination of Deng, Thomas, Duhon, Gordon or Hinrich (along with Brown’s or Sweetney’s expiring contract)? Because any combination of those assets would be FAR more compelling than anything that the Hawks could offer. Our bottom basement payroll makes acquiring a highly paid (and usually top-notch) player virtually impossible unless we trade 3-4 players and 1-2 draft picks. Another example of how our “Dollar Tree” ownership group has handcuffed this franchise.

Something has to give. The ownerships hands are tied due to Belkin but that does not excuse the Coaching staff and the players. It’s almost the all-star break and this team still has no real identity. You have to question Coach Woodson’s ability to motivate his players and get them to buy into his system.

Anakin Joe, I’m not assuming anything I was just reporting a rumor that I had read which stated the grizzlies were interested in deng and gordon. I thought if it were true then marvin and salim might work as well. Of course I don’t believe many of these rumors and that is why I used terms like “supposedly” and “rumored” in my post. As far as chicago offering any combination of deng, thomas, duhon, gordon, or hinrich? I seriously doubt that chicago would do that because gasol is really not that great of a player. He is a 7 footer who in 6 seasons has only averaged 20 or more points 1 time. His defense and career rebounding average of just over 8 is not impressive either. I doubt chicago would package hinrich and thomas for gasol. But at least maybe the hawks should inquire to see what it might take.

roan, I can’t agree with your under assessment of Gasol. Given ten games to work back into shape, after surgery on his broken foot, Gasol’s numbers for January are 22 points, 9.4 boards, 2 blocks, on 57% shooting from the floor. Those are elite low post numbers. The truth is that you can’t swing a cat without hitting a solid swing man in this league, certainly not on this team. And more will be coming in the draft. I’d give them Marvin, Shelden and Indy’s pick, in a heart beat, if I thought that would get it done. We’re under the cap, so we don’t have to give same contractual value to take Gasol’s deal on. Start Childress, Josh and Gasol, in a back court with Johnson and Astro Joe, and we’d be a far better team. Childress has established his value as a player, my opinion that Deng and Igoudala are better players, and choices, notwithstanding. Gasol is a legitimate, top-10 shot blocker in the NBA. He would allow Smith to play what would otherwise be considered the four slot. This team can continue to use Pachulia, and develop Jones (unless either were substituted for Shelden in such a transaction, which would be fine if that’s what Memphis would prefer).
Chicago isn’t going to give up Deng and Gordon, or Tim Thomas. Although, with New York’s pick, they could give up Nocioni and Thomas, with Brown’s expiring contract, and a throw-in contract from Memphis to make the numbers work. I would assume Memphis would want that New York pick. I’d give them the pick, Nocioni and Brown.
I will tell you this, if Chicago gets Gasol, they will validate my pre-season choice as the team to come out of the East, and they’ll give Dallas (my pick) or Phoenix, a serious run in the finals.
But let’s be honest about the Hawks: they’re not going to make a move for Gasol, and Gasol, hearing and knowing what everyone else hears, and knows, about this organization, isn’t going to agree to come to the Hawks. As bad as Memphis is, the Hawks are worse, from an upper management standpoint. So this point, this conversation, is moot.

Ando, I understand that we are under the cap and wouldn’t have to match salaries because we could absorb the difference with our cap space. I forgot about that little caveat of the NBA rule on trades. But in reality, given our broke and bleeding red ink owners, we would still have to get close in matching salary in order to do this deal.
I understand that gasol is having a great january and the premium on big men. However, I still see gasol as a notch below a perrenial allstar type player. In only one season did he average above 20 points in his six year career. And his career rebound average is barely above 8 which is the real sticking point with me. How can you claim that a guy is a dominate center when he has never averaged double digit rebounds in his career? On the other hand I guess he is a good player and if we keep the draft pick billy will screw it up anyway. So I say lets do the damn deal if memphis will agree to it because I’m not at all sold on the williams brothers.
By Wedgie Evans
January 22, 2007 09:37 PM | Link to this
Gasol’s career numbers are a little lower than they should be because his coaches have limited his minutes for much of his career. In 6 seasons, he’s only really played a star’s minutes in 3 of them. Spread his stats over 48 minutes and he is a damn good post player. I wouldn’t call him an elite post player like Kevin Garnett or Tim Duncan, but he’s definitely higher on the list than, say, Carlos Boozer or Zach Randolph. There’s no question he could dramatically improve the Hawks, and it would be great if the Hawks could put together a package to get him while keeping Joe Johnson and at least one Josh. But if he really wants to play for a contender, I think Memphis will try to accomodate him, especially if a contender (like Chicago) can give them better players in return, which is likely.

Roan, it’s semantic, and yet it’s not. Wedgie and I are saying dominant post player. You use the phrase “dominant center”. He’s more power forward than center. But in the East, where there just aren’t many quality centers, he’ll do just fine. What he is is a tremendous low-post scorer, and top-10 shot blocker. With rebounding support, from Josh Smith, and whomever would remain, post-trade, be it Shelden or Zaza (or what we hope will emerge from solomon jones), his 9 boards per game, or so, would be sufficient. Yet imagine his 2 blocks, alongside of Smiths near 3 per game. Now you have a collective presence in the paint. If Soloman puts on 20 pounds and develops some fundamentals, you have an athletic front line that is truly hard to match up with.
Again, we’re just p**’ in the wind to think he could end up here. Our front office doesn’t have the means or the skills to pull it off. And Gasol would probably rather stay in Memphis than come here. The perception of this franchise, and it’s place in the hierarchy of NBA teams, is simply at the very bottom. That’s the sad truth, no matter how you spin it. Until there is the perception of stability in this organization, from ownership, to the front office, down to the coaching staff, this is clearly about the last place a free agent, or a quality player, demanding a new residence, is going to want to come.
Joe Johnson went from the potential role of “first of many” to show that Atlanta was on the come, to “cautionary tale” about taking the money and thinking you can change the course of a flawed and possibly cursed franchise. He’s too professional to admit he made a mistake, or to ask for a trade (for now, but how much longer?). But does anyone really think, after what he’s been through, that, if he had it to do all over again, he would have signed with the Atlanta Hawks?
Me thinks not.

Sick. Looks like the only hope, however fanciful, is to lose enough games, get one of the top three picks, and hope that we have a GM that gets us one of the top three post players coming out of college this year. And oh yeah, hope that these players actually ARE coming out next year. All four conditions are a gamble, none are a certainty.
What’s worse…I’m not being one bit sarcastic. It really looks like this is the only hope for anything better n the future. So, I’m not looking forward to any “good” trades, and I won’t be fooled or lulled by any more two or three game winning streaks (if we have any), or any games where we beat an opponent that we are expected to get smashed by. Nope.

Anytime an above average player like Joe (yes..I rate him slightly above Steve Smith in his prime) is the focus of an isolation offense you guys should’ve known better. Also from the few Hawks games I did saw, some of them actually looked scared to shoot. I’ve never seen a professional player truly scared to make a play. I’ll chalk it to some level of immaturity on the players part….but it is also the state that the Spirit, BK, and Woodson has put the team in. And it was wrong for the Hawks to expect heavy minutes from ZaZa (a repeat what they tried with Nazi). His limited skills should’ve made that apparent. He’s a backup..just like Speedy. When I think about it I do partly believe Joe. The Spirit are keeping salaries low..but why did they sign Speedy for such a contract (he could’ve been on waivers by now from another team). A huge problem is that they are cheap misers. In that case save everyone the trouble, blow up most of the team, fire the incompetents, and try to rebuild a balanced roster. This time with SMART draft picks and veteran free agents who will play hard.

Interesting comments from Peter Vecsey in today’s NY Post:
Josh Smith says, “I know I went out of character a bit” when he gave Bobcats fans a double dose of the bird on his way to the locker room after being ejected late in the second quarter of yet another Hawks’ humiliation.
Not true! From what I know, Smith was very much in character. In 21/2 years as a pro, he has provoked numerous barbed confrontations with teammates and the coaching staff.
Still, say what I want about his lack of decorum and self-control, Smith became the first member of Atlanta to embarrass the franchise more leaving the court than playing on it.
How soon before Joe Johnson demands a trade to a mediocre contender?

It would be interesting to see how Capt. Sunshine (aka Sekou) spins this item.

Players don’t understand why they suck? WOW! So I guess that means that they are executing the coaching plan to a tee. I mean, if they are clueless as to why they lose games and can’t even use the “we didn’t execute our game plan excuse” then that suggests that Woody’s plan is being well executed and they still get blown out by injury-riddled teams like the Hornets and Bobcats.
Guys, I think it is more likely that we will each find a 2007 Maybach outside our homes this evening than it is that we will acquire another team’s top player.
And by the way, when Chicago dumped the 25 year-old Chandler if favor of the 32 year-old Ben Wallace, they obviously decided to pursue a title in the next 2-3 years. It would be stupid to keep all of their young players in lieu of acquiring Gasol (or another dominant low post scorer). A Rudy Gay/Tyrus Thomas forward combo would be unreal to watch over the next few years. Throw in an expiring contract and the Knicks pick (and maybe Duhon) and Memphis would have some really nice pieces to rebuild with.

CJ,
You can rip the team all you want. I agree with you there. Don’t, however, try and call Joe Johnson just an average player. You lose a lot of credibility there. The guy SHOULD be an All-Star. Many people close to the game feel the same.
I suggest you start watching some more games before you come on here and start giving a critic of Joe’s game. You are way, way, way off. He is the only guy on the team I will defend.

Ray, isn’t that pretty much what I predicted this summer? I’m just sayin’…….
Joe, my Maybach showed up in triple black (with Alicia Keys in the back seat wrapped in nothing but a fur coat). How about yours?
Did anybody else catch Dave Letterman getting all old-guy creepy on her last night? He just about pulled a Namath and went over the desk…….

“Childress has established his value as a player, my opinion that Deng and Igoudala are better players, and choices, notwithstanding. Gasol is a legitimate, top-10 shot blocker in the NBA.”
Andoman, you must be Belkin!
