Who’s your NBA MVP?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I hate to shout out any products here but today I have to give a nod to the folks who came up with satellite radio some love. If you love the NFL, they talk about it all day. If you love the weather, politics, heavy metal music or whatever else, you can get it all day long on satellite radio.
Me, I’m an NBA guy. So I love the constant chatter about the league. And today there was a great discussion on one of the stations about the league and the MVP race. Somehow LeBron James has stormed to the front of the pack because he’s played so well of late. King James will be on my ballot, but he’s not No. 1.
There was an argument made for Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Carmelo Anthony, Steve Nash and someone even had the stones to mention Paul Pierce.
Yet no one said a word about the guy I’m casting a vote for. How anyone can dismiss what Chauncey Billups has done this season stuns me. If the criteria’s the same it’s almost always been (Jordan should have won the thing every year after Magic and Bird left the league), then Billups should be a no-brainer pick.
Nash won it last year on the strength of being the best player on the best team in the league. Same thing for Kevin Garnett before him (remember, we’re talking the best regular season team). Charles Barkley and Karl Malone earned their hardware the same way. So why wouldn’t Billups be the choice this year?
If you have a candidate you feel deserves it ahead of him, make your case now. I want to know your feelings before I unveil the AJC’s second annual NBA awards in Sunday’s paper. But this honor is supposed to go to the guy who has the best season. And as fantastic as all these other guys have been this year, Billups has been the best player on the league’s best team all year!

Sekou I’ve got to go with LeBron. As much as I like Billups LeBron has stepped up his game big time lately. He’s been taking over games a la Jordan like he has never done before. I watched the whole game against NJ when Cleveland went on the road and broke their 14-game streak and dude was straight ballin’ in crunch time.
By the way Sekou, are you a XM or Sirius satellite guy (I’ve been with XM since 2003 and couldn’t live without it!)

Steve Nash is the Players pick and who knows better than the players themselves. Barkley said there’s no other candidate than Nash. 7 players on that team averaging career bests in points. Chauncey Billups could go down and the Piston’s would still go to the championships. He has such a good cast around him. Nash made his cast what it is today and led the suns to the pacific division without Amare. Kobe s team is right where every body expected him to be and. Runner up would be Lebron. Nash no contest!!!!!!!

nash is my man though labron has me going hhmmm as they are getting stronger as the season ends, instead of flagging like last year. another guy a team cant do without is wade down miami way and gets way over looked as an mvp.
ando, saw your remarks about teams laying down, they do it in a flash er new york minute, if they are somewhat established and having a horrendous year. lakers did it last year. where did you get the info about bk and the jj thing being an ownership issue and not bk? that is what i have said for a long time. if you or i or flash had been in bk’s shoes would you do what 70% of the owners want or 30%. unless i had a golden parachute in my contract made up by one of the larry brown team of lawyers i would do it just how it played out.
also a bit surprised you would dish ray allen so quickly though it was fantasy as he is a 25 a night 5 dimes a game guy with two steals a game that aint pure at one but gets enough assists to make you think he isnt always shoot first. again pure make believe which i tend to avoid but he could run with jj. we may get to find that out if they are both with the national team this year. cant remember if allen was a choice as well. REALITY is we need to find the next chauncey and big ben. the heck with getting an already there, they dont come as cheap as we need.
steve b, saw it too. we would have left jj out in the cold not to go ahead with it after he said he didnt want to come back. owners usually dont meet so openly with a player as they did with him, still gives me reason to think they would have liked to consider keeping him as illogical as some think it to be. may be just part of the bluff but an unusual one, need to remember it. know they are pleased the way it played out for them. good management to pull things together after the fact and be in competition for the big prize this year if they can get their big guy healthy. the problem is that gm is now in toronto to bust our chops. now the cap A is that to signify you are from the BIG A big guy.
bp, i cant believe those guys didnt respond to you. flash where were you, leaving a damsel in distress while you went after steve b? cant believe it dude; where is your priority and sense of chivalry? bp, i swear id have never done that. now what were you goin to say girl before you lose your spelling and punctuation. dont forget i got the suburban lines ready for you, id even detail it but not fix the dents. need it rugged. you like your guys rugged or metro?

Thanks bob. I am in fact the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be. You all should take after me and spend your days hate Vinny Mac and training in the great white north. Not a lot to do up there outside of weightlifting, sleeping with women, and shooting rabbits. Ahh the life.

I think Steve Nash will win it again, but if I had a vote it would be Lebron James. Nash has done it with out Joe, Amare and Q.Richardson this year. Lebron has been great all season and he’s putting up 31/7/6 these numbers are better than some of the years JORDAN won it. I think if he won that earlier showdown with Kobe, LBJ would be MVP(most people put a lot into star match-ups). But I think Nash wins,it LBJ 2nd D.Wade 3rd with C.Billups 4th. Most guys are going to say Billups dosn’t have the stats for the award.

Kobe is by far the MVP of the league.
Kobe is again on a tear that the the East Coast Biases are missing out on.
April avg’s for Kobe: 41/5/4 on > 51% shooting.
Kobe hands down is the top dog HEADLINER in the NBA..the Lakers would be lucky to win 15 games without him.

melo may not be mvp but he will be mr. clutch for all time soon. he has 8 game winning last of game shots in his career. as a comparison mj had 11 in his 15 years in the league and we always thiught that mj was the man in that situation.

East Coast bias? Are people still playing this up? Yes they are. I live in Southern California. It gets completely old out here. There is no(NO!) East Coast coverage in Cali. I’ll be moving to Detroit at the end of the year, so it’ll be changing a little.
On to the MVP debate. Almost everybody makes valid points for who they think should be the MVP this year. Unfortunately we all have different opinions or ideas on what makes that person the most valuable to his team.
My idea is the person the team cannot live without. If that person goes, then the whole team goes with him. Is that person Kobe? Very well could be. Chauncey Billups? Probably not. The Pistons could still prosper without him. How about Dirk getting hurt? That would seal a dead team in Dallas. But my two co-MVP’s are Steve Nash and Shawn Marion. They thrive off of each other and keep that team rolling.
My personal breakdown: 1a) Nash 1b) Marion 2) Bryant 3) Nowitzki

Billups is possibly the most overrated MVP candidate there is. Rip Hamilton is the guy who makes that offense click by running off screens on every possession and getting other players like Rasheed and Tayshaun on mismatches as a result. Yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh Chauncey hits plenty of clutch shots, but if that’s what makes an MVP to you then why is Sam Cassell not mentioned? Chauncey’s not the guy who creates offense for them, Rip is. Ayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy. Without Rip they would score much less points than without Chauncey.
To me the MVP is still Nash, if you can turn certified scrubs like Boris Diaw and Tim Thomas into solid contributors you should win the MVP by default. Kobe is 2nd, Lebron is 3rd, Carmelo is 3rd, Wade is 4th and Dirk is 5th. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh. Let’s not forget it’s the player most valuable to their team, not necessarily the one with the best stats.

SS, Nice seeing you last night! But, when you brought this up the other day I said Chauncey was my MVP too. Bron’ Bron’ *for MVP yeah ok, but you gotta think what are the criteria for an MVP? If it means the best player then ok, but in the words of *Mr. Ben Gordon, “Anytime the game is on the line, the best players take the shot to win the game” I’m so sick of Bron’ failing in that catigory. He always kicks it off to put the burden on someone else.*
I referenced the LaBron situation in the interview, and I asked Ben Gordon if he felt he fell into one of those “BEST” players category and he said, “yes”. * Without any hesitation. I asked Ben if this *”confidence”, started with the game against Nova in the quarter finals his freshman year when he took the game winning 3 pointer giving his team a two point lead. He said “yeah that was a big one. I can say that that’s when I started becoming consistent.” He also said that back at home in Chicago it is that swagger that he has when Coach Skiles looks for someone to make it happen. He looks to BG. Ben said, “Man, I just go into it knowing that I’m going to make the shot, not worried about if I’m not going to make it. I’m not scared to loose the game by missing. I guess that’s what makes all the differences in anyone being that go to guy”.
Well it seems as if the outcome of last nights game against the Hawks was everything Ben and his team had hoped for, keeping their play-off hopes alive. “Every game is exciting for us. Every game is a Play-Off game to us, right now. Right now! We don’t look further than the team we are playing at that moment,” *he said. At half time the Hawks and Bulls were tied. With the Hawks trading places with the Bulls for the lead 4 times, and tying it up 5 times.
The hawks were not willing to be defeated as of half time, with second year Josh Smith leading the flock with 13 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 blocked shots. A lot of those were against Chicago’s Andres Nocioni who kept trying to dwell in the nest, and J Smoove was smoovely swatting them out. Chicago’s Ben Gordon had 15 points leading his stampede with 9 of those 15 points 3’s.
Ben had earlier given praises to the Hawks, saying “The Hawks are a talented but dangerous team to play against. At this point in the season they are having fun, they are night fighting for anything. That’s what makes them so dangerous, We NEED this win”. *Not fighting for anything? I don’t think the Hawks look at it that way. They are still fighting for respect. They are still fighting for the fans in the city of Atlanta. Fans, who could clearly see that they weren’t giving up. ZaZa Pachulia on the other side of a double technical along with Tyson Chandler of Chicago, for a little push and shoving on the wood after some aggressive rebounding, and Josh Chilldress had to go Chill out after he was ejected in the 4th.
Looks like the Bulls are still in the play-off after a 96-90 win over the Hawks. Ben got the win. He so sincerely said “We need this win, and I’m going to do everything that I need to do get it.” *Ben and the Teenage Bulls (two years ahead of the Hawks)are still in the hunt with the Bulls tied 37-41 with the Philadelphia 76ers, who also won beating New Jersey by 20, 116-96.
Milwaukee and Indiana both won their games last night, Indiana beating Boston 117-112, and Milwaukee beating the Wizards 100-97.

Doc, Larry Brown ain’t represented by no team of lawyers. He is represented by a guy with more integrity than anyone else in this game of pro sports, Joe Glass. With all the nonsense that was written about Brown last year, I can tell you first hand that there is NO ONE in or out of sports whose word I would trust more than Joe’s. You are right, BK would do well to be represented by him!

Nash and Billups are both having MVP years, and I’m applaud if either of them got the award. But, both benefit from excellent surrounding castes that have benefited from some terrific coaching. Anyone who thinks Diaw is a stiff, or a so-so player made to look good by Nash, I think is overstating the influence that Nash can have on a team. The system works, everyone buys into it, and the general on the bench is hands down terrific.
Billips has the more accomplished surrounding cast and plays with three guys on the offensive side of the ball that create incredible match up problems for everyone—Sheed, Hamilton, and Prince. They have benefited from three great coaches, but were really shaped into players with tremendous confidence in their offensive know how, in their ability to make really good decisions and execute on them, by Larry Brown.
So I think that either one is deserving.
You can’t make a stronger case for either of them than you can for Dirk. The guy has been outstanding and has carried that team over the hump. They are my pick to win it all.

this text will be bolded Dirk Nowitzki. He is the best player on the mavericks period. Avg 26.5 points per game over 30 for the month of March and April…If the Mavs lost him theyd be dead in the water, Nash is great and all, but Marion is an ALL-STAR too, plus the coach shud get as much credit for makin the other players better as Nash does, Chauncy Billups has 3 other all-stars and even without him the Pistons are number 1 in the east, Kobes team sucks, and 7 or 8th in the west so he cant even be considered, Dwayne Wade has Shaq the most dominant player ever on his team who is avg. 20 and 10, Lebron James is closing the season strong however his team is not tops in the league and he has an allstar in BIG Z coupled with a tendencie to pass away big shots, and Tony Parker is the only reasonable choice, with the 3rd best record in the leauge, b4 the season they werent expected to have the 3rd best in their division, why is this…DIRK NOWITZKI is having an MVP deserving season as he did last year, plus his D has improved and his post-up game…without Dirk the Mavs are trash, DIRK NOWITZKI is the MVP!!!!
For the Record im a Spurs Fan for Life REPEAT!!

If I had a vote my vote would go to Kobe. In my mind Kobe is far ahead of all of the other candidates…
I’d put Dirk next and then LbJ. Nash definetly deserved the award for sure with taking a lowly team to the best team (record wise) in the NBA not to mention bringing back the run and gun up and down basketball that we all enjoy watching so much but THIS YEAR…ehh…they’re still definetly a good team (even without Amare) but there just isn’t enough there to convince me that Nash is the MVP once again this year…the best PG FOR SURE among the best of the best in the league DEFINETLY but MVP of the ‘05-‘06 season…nope
Just for comparison sake I’d love to see how many games the LA Lakers win if Kobe didn’t play one single game this season
Kobe is the MVP this season and if he doesn’t end up getting the hardware I will honestly say the guy was robbed
All of that coming from one of the biggest Laker haters you’ll ever come across

An MVP should be measured by what one would believe his team’s record would be if he wasn’t playing for them.
Pistons record without Billups?? Still good. Mav record without Dirk? Bad - so-so record. Cavs without Lebron? bad to so-so (with Huges) Heat without Wade? so-so Suns without Nash? so-so Lakers without Bryant? BAD BAD BAD
Thus, the MVP should be Kobe. Would people still pick Chancey Billups for MVP if he was playing for the Lakers? Come on, consider the teams these guys play for.
1 Kobe 2 Lebron 3 Dirk/Nash (tie)

The NBA MVP is not close as people may think. In my opinion is only one person and that is KOBE BRYANT. I know there’s alot of people out that has a bias against him for supposedly being the reason SHAQ was traded from the Lakers and the situation from the EAGLE, CO. Some believes he’s selfish and doesn’t make his teammates better. Some people believes that no player that’s not on the best team should win. Some are just flat out Laker haters. So with that said here are my reason for why KOBE should be the MVP.
For all the revisionist historians out there The LAKERS were expected to be a LOTTERY team at the beginning of the year. The Suns, Cavaliers, Heat, Pistons, Mavericks, and Spurs were all expected to be good and make the playoffs. The Heat, Pistons, Suns, Spurs, and Mavericks were all expected to be Championship contenders BEFORE the season began.
KOBE has been the most consistently great player in the NBA from start to finish. NASH, BILLUPS, JAMES, NOWITSKI, WADE, and PARKER have all had there swoons at different point in this season.
KOBE has absolutely no supporting cast! I know some would say he has ODOM. Give me a break! ODOM has been wildly inconsistent and just recently has started being more consistent. Outside of ODOM name another LAKER that is in the category of the other players on either the PISTONS(HAMILTON, PRINCE, both WALLACES, and even MCDYESS), SUNS(MARION and DIAW), HEAT(SHAQ, WALKER, WILLIAMS), MAVERICKS(HOWARD, STACKHOUSE, TERRY, and DANIELS), CAVS(ILLEGAUSKAS, HUGHES)and SPURS(DUNCAN, FINLEY, VAN EXEL, GINOBILI and too many more to mention). The LAKERS roster is the by far and away the least talented team of any MVP candidate.
Additional factors:
NASH, DIRK, PARKER, and JAMES can’t play defense. KOBE guards the best team player every night.
BILLUPS has three other ALL-STARS on the PISTONS starting five!!!!!!!! It can be legitimately argued that BILLUPS isn’t the MVP of the PISTONS.
KOBE and LEBRON are in similar situation with them being the only real true scoring threat but there’s one major difference: LEBRON plays in the wretched EAST and KOBE plays in the superior WEST. LEBRON and the CAVS are where they were expected to be. KOBE has single-handedly taken the LAKERS from the LOTTERY to the playoffs.
Everyone is shouting about how NASH has lifted the games of DIAW, HOUSE, and etc. Everyone also is missing a few things about the PHOENIX team. First there’s a guy by the name of SHAWN MARION who is also an All-Star that has stepped up his game this year. The young players that were there last year also have improved tremendously (BARBOSA). They lost Quentin Richardson who was nothing more than a spot up three point shooter and replaced him with Eddie House who is shooting a better percentage than Richardson last year. Boris Diaw is giving PHOENIX a little better production than Joe Johnson did last year. Tim and Kurt Thomas has given the Suns more depth than last year. Anyone with common sense now realizes that it’s the system that Mike D’Antoni runs that allows PHOENIX to be as successful as they have been not NASH. You can plug any great point guard (BILLUPS, KIDD)in that system and succeed. Also in the head-to-head matchups against the other top point guards in the NBA NASH has been owned.
WADE plays alongside an ALL-STAR center (allthough aging) SHAQ. WADE does not always show up when it counts. Don’t believe it look it up. Miami’s record against the top teams in the NBA (Pistons, Spurs, and Mavs) is worse than the LAKERS even though the HEAT is infinitely more talented than the LAKERS.
Everyone on this board knows that TIM DUNCAN is the MVP of the SPURS so all the talk of PARKER is utter nonsense.
Last but not least DIRK NOWITSKI. I’m a MAVS fan but I can’t say in good conscience that DIRK is the MVP. DIRK comes up short too many times against the best teams. On top of that DIRK plays with a team that has too many offensive weapons (STACKHOUSE, TERRY, DANIELS, HOWARD etc) and he’s improved defensively but that’s not saying much since he was absolutely terrible to began with.
For those who say the MVP can’t come for a seventh seeded are flat-out wrong. Who in there right mind would say that. The intent is to choose the MVP of the entire NBA. MVP stands for (MOST VALUABLE PLAYER). VALUABLE is defined: AS GREAT IMPORTANCE OR USE. There should be NO DOUBT that the player that was MOST VALUABLE this season when you take everything into account Preseason expectations, Team Talent, Stats, Conference Strength, and Intangibles there’s not a doubt on this planet or any other the NBA MVP should be KOBE BEAN BRYANT!!!!!!!!! It’s just so unfortunate do to jealousy, bias, or flat out ignorance that he will get robbed and the award will go to a media darling (Lebron, Wade, Billups, or Nash) instead of going to its rightful owner KOBE BEAN BRYANT!

The only people who didn’t vote for Kobe are the people who hates him. Hate, that’s all it is. Nothing to do with how well he did this year. He’s the Most Valuable Player in the NBA. He may not be the Most Valuable Teammate, but heck he is the Most Valuable Player. Nash or Lebron may win the award but that’s because they are more likeable than Kobe, not because they are better than him. Coz they’re not !!!!!

Its Nash /Kobe as Co-MVPs because neither has Billups or Nowitski’s supporting cast. Lebron is great but he lacks Kobe’s defensive skills and even admits he doesn’t have Kobe’s killer instinct. AI and Paul Pierce had great seasons but neither made the playoffs. In addition, the Western Conference remains MUCH better than the Eastern Conference. Kobe’s scoring avg is highest since 1987.

Kobe is more valuable to his team than any other player in the league. They need him to dominate and score and win and he dons the purple and gold every night to do just that. I’m glad you didn’t pick nash, but I think billups is a close second to Kobe just because I think the Piatons would’ve made the playoffs without him. Kobe must be amazing evry night and he is. Nash has nights where they don’t show his stat line in Suns wins because its mediocre. He isn’t dominant and can’t be MVP. Think like this if you put a solid 2 guard in kobe’s place and two solid points in Nsh’s and Billup’s place, the lakers will be a bad team and the Suns and Pistons would still be conteneders. Billups has been great, but Kobemakes lakers conteneders.

Comparing nash/kobe you should look at it this way.take nash away from suns and take kobe away from the lakers who will have more wins.if kobe was not playing for the lakers then i dont think they’ll be close getting into playoffs.but with kobe on that team they are a contender.and kobe is the baddest man in the nba right now 62 points in three quarters.81 points in one game.4 45 points in a row.winning the scoring title with 35.2 only the 4th player in the nba to do that.love him or hate him.

sorry but not bron bron or billups..sorry the east is the crapiest of the east/ west rivalry..2 good teams..pistons and heat..just look at whos ranked 8th..they have a losing record..that pretty much says enough..the MVP has got to be KOBE BRYANT..dont forget people..most valuable player means who means most to the team..its obvious LA needs kobe..they wouldnt grant him a contract for over 100 mil. if he wasnt that valuable..not only that but they gave up the fat fxxk shaq daddy for mr. bryant..just give lamar odom, cookie, mihm, kwame, and smush with kobe..last year such a losing season..but this year..its obvious kobe’s ambition to make his team great is obvious..it wasnt just a fluke when they beat detroit and S.A…no no it wasn’t..kobe gave open looks for his team and trusted them to shoot..and look at the outcome..they win..nash okae same stuff you did last year? w/ out amare..but look at the acquisitions they made this year with borris diaw, eddie house, and such..those guys are meant to score..so putting them on the suns wouldnt make them any different not to score? sorry steve you just repeated what you did last year in my opinion..you pretty much did the same thing with dallas? has anyone noticed when nash is benched the team is still winning? but who’s noticed when kobe’s benched or not playing they lose..i mean come on earlier in the season when kobe was benched against utah..they lost twice..and utah isn’t the greatest team in the league..but lets look at how kobe’s brought his team back..102-104 over dallas with his desperation 3..the 81 points against toronto..the wins over S.A. and Detroit..the win over Miami in january..i mean i can keep going on with kobe who only has a lamar odom..everyone in the beginning of the season said LA wouldnt make it to the playoffs let alone have a winning record..but now his critics have turned into fans..so by far kobe bryant deserves the MVP

kobe bryant is mvp because with out him la would of never made it and i lakers were in the east la would of been in 5th place cause east teams suck.i want it to be Miami Heat@ los angelas lakers in the staples center and i want it 2 be tied with 102 miami and 102 lakers and 3.4 remaining and its lakers ball and kobe just does a turn a round jumper right over dwayne wade at the buzzer.now tell me that wouldnt be sick.see if it was steve nash it would of been lame because hes white and hes a queer but when it comes down 2 buisnees just give the ball in kobes hands and in no time the game would be over kobe 4 mvp.
